Highly porous hydrogels for efficient solar water evaporation

Solar energy is a plentiful renewable resource on Earth, with versatile applications in both domestic and industrial settings, particularly in solar steam generation (SSG). However, current SSG processes encounter challenges such as low efficiency and the requirement for extremely high concentrations of solar irradiation. Interfacial evaporation technology has emerged as a solution to these issues, offering improved solar performance compared to conventional SSG processes. Nonetheless, its implementation introduces additional complexities and costs to system construction. In this study, we present the development of hydrophilic, three-dimensional network-structured hydrogels with high porosity and swelling ratio using a facile fabrication technique. We systematically varied the mixing ratios of four key ingredients (polyethylene glycol diacrylate, PEGDA; polyethylene glycol methyl-ether acrylate, PEGMA; phosphate-buffered saline, PBS; and 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone, PI) to control the mean pore size and swelling ratio of the hydrogel. Additionally, plasmonic gold nanoparticles were incorporated into the hydrogel using a novel methodology to enhance solar light absorption and subsequent evaporation efficiency. The resulting material exhibited a remarkable solar efficiency of 77% and an evaporation rate of 1.6 kg m-2 h-1 under standard solar illumination (one sun), comparable to those of state-of-the-art SSG devices. This high efficiency can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the hydrogel's unique composition and nanoparticle concentration. These findings offer a promising avenue for the development of highly efficient solar-powered evaporation applications.

Interfacial Solar Evaporation: From Fundamental Research to Applications

In the last decade, interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG), powered by natural sunlight garnered significant attention due to its great potential for low-cost and environmentally friendly clean water production in alignment with the global decarbonization efforts. This review aims to share the knowledge and engage with a broader readership about the current progress of ISSG technology and the facing challenges to promote further advancements toward practical applications. The first part of this review assesses the current strategies for enhancing the energy efficiency of ISSG systems, including optimizing light absorption, reducing energy losses, harvesting additional energy, and lowering evaporation enthalpy. Subsequently, the current challenges faced by ISSG technologies, notably salt accumulation and bio-fouling issues in practical applications, are elucidated and contemporary methods are discussed to overcome these challenges. In the end, potential applications of ISSG, ranging from initial seawater desalination and industrial wastewater purification to power generation, sterilization, soil remediation, and innovative concept of solar sea farm, are introduced, highlighting the promising potential of ISSG technology in contributing to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices. Based on the review and in-depth understanding of these aspects, the future research focuses are proposed to address potential issues in both fundamental research and practical applications.

Clay-based aerogel combined with CuS for solar-driven interfacial steam generation and desalination

Solar-driven water purification is a promising technology that can effectively utilize solar energy for seawater desalination. However, poor materials are unable to meet the dense energy of solar steam generation in natural sunlight for real-time practical applications. Therefore, the demand for energy density can be increased by using improved semiconductor aerogel materials. Here, we report a simple chemical method to obtain a CuS@ATP/PS composite aerogel (named CuAP), which was made of attapulgite (ATP) and CuS loaded onto it using an N-template to give it good photothermal characteristics (CuS@ATP), and then cross-link it with potato starch (PS). The evaporation rate of CuAP-15 aerogel in pure water at 1 kW m-2 solar radiation is 1.57 kg m-2 h-1. Meanwhile, CuAP-15 aerogel showed excellent salt resistance with an evaporation rate of 1.35 kg m-2 h-1 in 20 wt% NaCl solution. And also exhibited excellent cycling durability in cycling stability tests. More importantly, the freshwater yield can reach 6.54 kg m-2 under natural light irradiation for 11 h. Therefore, CuAP aerogel has a great prospect of application in the field of seawater desalination in the future.

Bacterial cellulose-based film with self-floating hierarchical porous structure for efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation

Interface solar water evaporation is a mean of rapidly evaporating water using solar energy. However, it is still a challenge to obtain solar evaporators with simple assembly, durability and high photothermal performance. Here, we demonstrated an effective post foaming strategy for treating nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide/bacterial cellulose film (F-NRGO@BC) prepared by a simple in situ culture method. The composite film contains hierarchical porous structure and bubbles on the film, achieving an integrated self-floating interface evaporator with excellent light absorption (96.5 %) and high toughness (200.18 kJ m-3). Porous structure and low enthalpy of F-NRGO@BC make a high evaporation rate of 1.68 kg m-2 h-1 and a low thermal conductivity of 0.644 W m-1 K-1 to ensure effective energy efficiency and heat insulation. This design of controlling surface morphology and internal structure provides a novel way for large-scale preparation and high-performance evaporator.

Copper sulfide integrated functional cellulose hydrogel for efficient solar water purification

Hydrogels are emerging materials for solar steam generation to alleviate water scarcity. Herein, a semiconductor of copper sulfide (CuS) was integrated into cellulose hydrogel to fabricate a solar steam evaporator. Sustainable and low-cost cotton linter (cellulose) was regenerated by NaOH/urea solvent. Epichlorohydrin was added as a cross-linking agent to enhance the mechanical robustness of the composite hydrogel, and CuS crystals were tightly attached to cellulose fibers and uniformly distributed in the hydrogel matrix. Under simulated solar light, a heating zone was established at the top surface of the composite hydrogel, and CuS can efficiently absorb and convert light into heat. The hydrophilic cellulose network affords an adequate water supply and a low water vaporization enthalpy. By tuning the CuS loadings, the optimized evaporation rate and solar-to-vapor efficiency could reach 2.2 kg/m2/h and 87 %, respectively, under 1 sun irradiation. The evaporation rate remained above 2.1 kg/m2/h after 48 h of irradiation. Moreover, the hydrogels (with a CuS loading of 30 wt%) showed a efficiently photocatalytic degradation of 95 % for methylene blue and 92 % for Rhodamine B. Such functional hydrogel evaporator holds great potential for practical water treatment and solar-driven applications.

Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Containing Calendula Extract as a Wound Healing Bandage: In Vivo Test

Hydrogel is a biomaterial widely used in several areas of industry due to its great biocompatibility and adaptability to biological tissues. In Brazil, the Calendula plant is approved by the Ministry of Health as a medicinal herb. It was chosen to be incorporated in the hydrogel formulation because of its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and healing effects. This study synthesized polyacrylamide hydrogel containing calendula extract and evaluated its efficiency as a bandage for wound healing. The hydrogels were prepared using free radical polymerization and characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, swelling analysis and mechanical properties by texturometer. The morphology of the matrices showed large pores and foliaceous structure. In vivo testing, as well as the evaluation of acute dermal toxicity, was conducted using male Wistar rats. The tests indicated efficient collagen fiber production, improved skin repair and no signs of dermal toxicity. Thus, the hydrogel presents compatible properties for the controlled release of calendula extract used as a bandage to promote cicatrization.

Photothermal nanohybrid hydrogels for biomedical applications

In the past decades, diseases such as wound infection, cancer, bone defect and osteoarthritis have constantly threatened the public health. However, the traditional treatment has many insufficiencies, such as high cost, easy recurrence and high biological toxicity. Hydrogel is a material with three-dimensional network structure, which has a series of advantages, such as injectability, self-heal ability, easy loading and controllability of drug release, and excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it is extensively used in drug delivery, antibacterial, anti-cancer and other fields. However, the traditional hydrogels have the single performance, and therapeutic efficacy is often rely on the drugs loaded on them to cure diseases, which cannot achieve sustainable therapeutic effect. In order to solve this problem, photothermal nano hydrogel with photothermal agent (PTA) has become an ideal material due to its excellent physical and chemical properties. Photothermal nano hydrogels used in photothermal therapy (PTT) can exploit the photothermal effect of photothermal agent to increase local temperature and control the sol-gel phase transition behavior of hydrogels, so they are widely used in drug release, photothermal sterilization, photothermal inhibition of cancer cells and enhancement of bone repair. To sum up, this paper introduces the preparation of hydrogels with photothermal nanomaterials, and discusses their applications in the fields of drug release, photothermal sterilization, photothermal cancer cell inhibition and enhanced bone repair.

Rapid Fabrication of Porous Photothermal Hydrogel Coating for Efficient Solar-Driven Water Purification

Cost management and scalable fabrication without sacrificing the purification performance are two critical issues that should be addressed before the practical commercial application of solar-driven evaporators. To address this challenge, we report a porous photothermal hydrogel coating prepared by mixing the raw materials of sawdust (SD), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), which was applied to undergo a blading-drying-rehydration process to prepare the evaporator. In the coating, the crystallized PVA gives the coating a solid skeleton and the sawdust endows the coating with a loose structure to sufficiently enhance the water transportation capacity. As a result, the evaporator coated with the hydrogel coating displays a high water transport rate and efficient evaporation performance along with excellent mechanical properties and stability. Water migrates vertically upward 5 cm within 4 minutes. The compressive stress of the rehydrated hydrogel coating reaches as high as 14.28 MPa under 80% strain. The water evaporation rate of the hydrogel coating-based evaporator reaches 1.833 kg m^-2 h^-1 corresponding to an energy efficiency of 83.29% under 1 sun irradiation. What is more, the hydrogel coating retains its excellent evaporation performance and stability after immersion in acid or alkali solution, ultrasound treatment, and long-time immersion in water. Under outdoor conditions, the water evaporation rate of the hydrogel coating-based evaporator is about 5.69 times higher than that of pure water. This study proposes a rapid, cost-effective, and scalable strategy for preparing a high-performance photothermal hydrogel coating that will find sustainable and practical application in solar-driven water purification.

Synergy of copper Selenide/MXenes composite with enhanced solar-driven water evaporation and seawater desalination

Despite significant of solar energy to power water evaporation in seawater desalination, the commercial application of this technology is limited by the poor light absorption and low photothermal conversion of existing photothermal materials. Herein, we report a simple method for solar-driven water evaporation using a device comprising Cu_2-xSe/Nb₂CT_x nanocomposites supported by a glass microfiber membrane, which utilizes cotton thread as water transport pathway. The proposed device demonstrates excellent light absorption, water transportation, and thermal management. Benefiting from the strong synergetic photothermal effect of Cu_2-xSe and Nb₂CT_x, the Cu_2-xSe/Nb₂CT_x nanocomposites function as an efficient solar absorber with excellent photothermal conversion efficiency. The rough surface, low thermal conductivity and good hydrophilicity of glass microfiber membrane could maximize light capture, limit heat loss, and timely replenish water during the water evaporation process. When evaluated as a water evaporation system for outdoor seawater desalination, the system achieved a water evaporation of 12.60 kg·m^-2 within 6 h. High fresh water generation rate is an important embodiment of high photothermal conversion efficiency. This study demonstrates a new route for designing solar desalination devices with high photothermal conversion properties.

Emerging Fabrication Strategies of Hydrogels and Its Applications

Recently, hydrogels have been investigated for the controlled release of bioactive molecules, such as for living cell encapsulation and matrices. Due to their remote controllability and quick response, hydrogels are widely used for various applications, including drug delivery. The rate and extent to which the drugs reach their targets are highly dependent on the carriers used in drug delivery systems; therefore the demand for biodegradable and intelligent carriers is progressively increasing. The biodegradable nature of hydrogel has created much interest for its use in drug delivery systems. The first part of this review focuses on emerging fabrication strategies of hydrogel, including physical and chemical cross-linking, as well as radiation cross-linking. The second part describes the applications of hydrogels in various fields, including drug delivery systems. In the end, an overview of the application of hydrogels prepared from several natural polymers in drug delivery is presented.

Modified Hollow Glass Microspheres/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite Aerogels with Low Thermal Conductivity for Highly Efficient Solar Steam Generation

Solar steam generation (SSG) as a pollution-free and sustainable way for desalination or wastewater treatment has attracted great attention in recent years. Herein, we report the fabrication of novel aerogels GAHAS and GAHAF composed of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550)-modified hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by a sol-gel method for highly efficient SSG. The RGO can well wrap on modified HGM and form an interpenetrated porous structure with an excellent mechanical property. In addition, benefiting from the hollow structure of HGM, GAHAS obtained by supercritical CO₂ drying well maintains the original structure of the hydrogel and shows low thermal conductivity (0.0823 W m^-1 K^-1) in the wet state and self-floating ability. Combined with its superhydrophilic wettability and high light absorption (ca. 93%), the as-prepared GAHAS shows an outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency of 89.13% under 1 sun (1 kW m^-2) illumination and excellent stability. Moreover, from the simulated seawater outdoor solar desalination experiment, it was found that the concentrations of the four primary ions K⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and Mg²⁺ in purified water are 1.65, 0.09, 1.42, and 0.32 mg L^-1, respectively, and fully meet drinking water standards. Thus, our GAHAS aerogel shows great potential for practical application in SSG. This work enriches the photothermal materials and may provide a new idea for design and creation of HGM-based photothermal materials with low thermal conductivity, tunable porosity, high mechanical strength, self-floating ability, and high solar energy conversion efficiency for SSG.

Role of chitosan-based hydrogels in pollutants adsorption and freshwater harvesting: A critical review

The shortage of freshwater resources is an urgent problem worldwide, especially for some areas that lack rainfall conditions. The development of reliable wastewater treatment and freshwater harvesting equipment has become an urgent demand. Hydrogel is a porous 3D network structure with good pollutant adsorption capacity, water holding capacity, water adsorption capacity, and reversible swelling ability, which has been widely used in water treatment. Chitosan (CH), as the abundant bioactive material in nature, is commonly used to prepare hydrogels with low-cost, favorable stability, good antimicrobial activity, high mechanical properties, biodegradability, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, this review presents a comprehensive review of the various applications of CH-based hydrogels in water treatment including various pollutant adsorption, oil-water separation, seawater desalination, and atmospheric condensation. The relevant mechanisms, application potential, and challenge are also illustrated. This review aims to provide a viable idea to address the shortage of freshwater resources.

H2O- and ethanol concentration-responsive polymer/gel inverse opal photonic crystal

Responsive photonic crystals have attracted much attention due to their strong capability to manipulate the propagation of light in the visible region, but it is still a big challenge to invisibility and mechanical stability. Here, the novel Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals, which have high mechanical stability and can release visible patterns after wetting with water, are discussed. The Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals are also responsive to the concentration of ethanol, and the structural color response times increase with increasing ethanol concentration. This design uses the selective infiltration, hydrogen bonding and capillary action of solvent to realize the spectral diversity of reflectance. Owing to the high polarity and hydrogen bonding ability of carboxyl groups, water molecules are adsorbed easily by the poly(acrylic acid) gel. Subsequently, the encrypted information is decrypted due to the redshift of the structural color. Because of its lower polarity and hydrogen bonding ability relative to water, ethanol can impede the absorption of solvent by gel. Therefore, the ethanol concentration can be identified based on the structural color response time. Furthermore, reliable information decryption methods make Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals potentially uesful as trusted encryption devices.

3D Photothermal Cryogels for Solar-Driven Desalination

This paper reports the fabrication of photothermal cryogels for freshwater production via the solar-driven evaporation of seawater. Photothermal cryogels were prepared via in situ oxidative polymerization of pyrrole with ammonium persulfate on preformed poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA) cryogels. We found that the pyrrole concentration used in the fabrication process has a significant effect on the final PSA/PPy cryogels (PPCs), causing the as-formed polypyrrole (PPy) layer on the PPC to evolve from nanoparticles to lamellar sheets and to consolidated thin films. PPC fabricated using the lowest pyrrole concentration (i.e., PPC10) displays the best solar-evaporation efficiency compared to the other samples, which is further improved by switching the operative mode from floating to standing. Specifically, in the latter case, the apparent solar evaporation rate and solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency reach 1.41 kg m-2 h-1 and 96.9%, respectively, due to the contribution of evaporation from the exposed lateral surfaces. The distillate obtained from the condensed vapor, generated via solar evaporation of a synthetic seawater through PPC10, shows an at least 99.99% reduction of Na while all the other elements are reduced to a subppm level. We attribute the superior solar evaporation and desalination performance of PPC10 to its (i) higher photoabsorption efficiency, (ii) higher heat localization effect, (iii) open porous structure that facilitates vapor removal, (iv) rough pore surface that increases the surface area for light absorption and water evaporation, and (v) higher water-absorption capacity to ensure efficient water replenishment to the evaporative sites. It is anticipated that the gained know-how from this study would offer insightful guidelines to better designs of polymer-based 3D photothermal materials for solar evaporation as well as for other emerging solar-related applications.

A novel photothermal, self-healing and anti-reflection water evaporation membrane

For the solar water evaporation system, there are no reports on the self-healing support, which is crucial for the sustainable use of solar evaporation membrane. In this work, a self-healing hydrogel is prepared via free radical copolymerization with covalent cross-linking and coordination cross-linking and is used as a photothermal water evaporation support. The photothermal material is then introduced into the hydrogel by physically doping acetylene carbon black. At the same time, inverted micro-pyramids are fabricated on the surface of the hydrogel by soft imprint to increase the utilization efficiency of incident light. The water evaporation rate of the composite membrane can reach 1.58 kg m-2 h-1, and the breaking elongation is 1580%. It can self-heal after it is completely broken, and can still be stretched 3 times its original length. The design of this self-healing photothermal membrane will provide a new idea for its application in a harsh outdoor environment.

All-Day Freshwater Harvesting through Combined Solar-Driven Interfacial Desalination and Passive Radiative Cooling

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has received increasing research attention for clean water generation, but freshwater harvesting often occurs only during daytime. Herein, we report a strategy for all-day freshwater harvesting through combining solar-driven interfacial desalination and dew water generation. Through spray-coating carbon nanotubes onto a flexible substrate that has high-infrared emittance in the atmosphere window, a dual functional film was prepared to efficiently absorb solar energy for desalination at daytime and passively cool down the surface temperature to collect dew water at night. By integrating the dual functional film within a three-stage membrane distillation device, the home-made system achieved a drinkable freshwater collection efficiency of 71.1% when desalinating seawater under 1 sun illumination and achieved a dew water collection rate of 0.1 L m^-2 day^-1 at night. The readily available low-cost raw materials, simple fabrication process of the dual functional films, and the resultant all-day freshwater collection systems make the combined solar-thermal interfacial desalination and dew water collection a promising solution to alleviate the freshwater shortage in many underdeveloped regions, arid areas, and islands.

Superhydrophilic and highly elastic monolithic sponge for efficient solar-driven radioactive wastewater treatment under one sun

As an effective way to obtain solar energy and separate the soluble contaminants from water, solar-driven interfacial evaporation is used in desalination, wastewater treatment, electricity generation, and domestic water heating system. Herein, we demonstrate a monolithic sponge with three-dimensional porous structure as the solar-energy evaporator, which is composed of hydrophilic polymer (Konjac Glucomannan, KGM) and solar absorbent (reduced graphene oxide, rGO). Under one sun irradiation, the sponge achieves a rapid evaporation rate (1.60 kg m^-2 h^-1) and high interfacial water evaporation efficiency (92 %) due to its good absorption, photothermal, thermal insulation, and fast water transport properties. Meanwhile, the concentrations of radioactive elements (strontium, cesium, and uranium) in wastewater dropped from grams to micrograms after purification, even under radiation and acidic conditions. Additionally, the durability and repeatability of the sponge also have been verified. The results showed that solar-driven interfacial evaporation can effectively treat radioactive wastewater and enrich various radionuclides in a more energy-saving manner.
