Animal waste as a valuable biosorbent in the removal of heavy metals from aquatic ecosystem-an eco-friendly approach

Toxic pollutants in the form of heavy metals are added through various anthropogenic activities daily into the aquatic ecosystem beyond their permissible limits, and their bioaccumulation capacity makes them hazardous substances for the survival of all organisms. Thus, their removal from aquatic ecosystems is the need of the hour. Treatment of wastewater containing heavy metals through biosorption is gaining popularity and is being explored all around the world due to its various advantages over conventional methods of treatment. Utilization of animal waste as a biomaterial could be the best solution to remove it from the ecosystem. Such treatment methods are a blessing for developing and underdeveloped countries due to their low cost. This paper provides in-depth details about heavy metals, their health implications, mechanisms of toxicity, modes of transportation, and conventional treatment approaches. A comprehensive understanding of the biosorption process, encompassing its world scenario, evolution, mechanisms, factors affecting the process, and advantages, will also be covered. Finally, animal wastes and their applicability in the removal of heavy metal pollutants from wastewater shall also be thoroughly reviewed, followed by their future utility and recommendations.

Equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies on the biosorption of lead by human metallothionein gene-cloned bacteria as a novel biosorbent

Heavy metals are the main pollutants in water and are an important global problem that threatens human health and ecosystems. In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the use of genetically modified bacteria as an eco-friendly method to solve heavy metal pollution problems. The goal of this study was to generate genetically modified Escherichia coli expressing human metallothioneins (hMT2A and hMT3) and to determine their tolerance, bioaccumulation, and biosorption capacity to lead (Pb2+ ). Recombinant MT2A and MT3 strains expressing MT were successfully generated. Minimum inhibition concentrations (MIC) of Pb for MT2A and MT3 were found to be 1750 and 2000 mg L-1 , respectively. Pb2+ resistance and bioaccumulation capacity of MT3 were higher than MT2A. Therefore, only MT3 biosorbent was used in Pb2+ biosorption, and its efficiency was examined by performing experiments in a batch system. Pb2+ biosorption by MT3 was evaluated in terms of isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The results showed that Pb biosorption fits to the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the reaction is exothermic. The maximum Pb2+ capacity of the biosorbent was 50 mg Pb2+ g-1 . The potential of MT3 in Pb biosorption was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) analyses. The desorption study showed that the sorbent had up to 74% recovery and could be effectively used four times. These findings imply that this biosorbent can be applied as a promising, precise, and effective means of removing Pb2+ from contaminated waters. PRACTITIONER POINTS: In this study, the tolerance levels, bioaccumulation, and biosorption capacities of Pb in aqueous solutions were determined for the first time in recombinant MT2A and MT3 strains in which human MT2A and MT3 genes were cloned. The biosorbent of MT3, which was determined to be more effective in Pb bioaccumulation, was synthesized and used in Pb biosorption. The Pb biosorption mechanism of MT3 biosorbent was identified using isotherm modeling, kinetic modeling, and thermodynamic studies. The maximum Pb removal percentage capacity of the biosorbent was 90%, whereas the maximum biosorption capacity was up to 50 mg Pb2+ g-1 . These results indicated that MT3 biosorbent has a higher Pb biosorption capacity than existing recombinant biosorbents. MT3 biosorbent can be used as a promising and effective biosorbent for removing Pb from wastewater.

Impacts of algae supplements (Arthrospira & Chlorella) on growth, nutrient variables, intestinal efficacy, and antioxidants in New Zealand white rabbits

An 8-week trial to examine the impacts of Arthrospira platensis and Chlorella vulgaris on the growth, nutrient aspects, intestinal efficacy, and antioxidants of 75 New Zealand white male rabbits (initial body weight = 665.93 ± 15.18 g). Herein the study was designed in one-way ANOVA to compare the effects of the two algae species with two levels of supplementations in the feeds of New Zealand white rabbits. The rabbits were divided into five groups (n = 15/group), where the first group was allocated as the control group (Ctrl) while the second and third groups received A. platensis at 300 or 500 mg/kg diet (Ap300 or Ap500). The fourth and fifth groups fed C. vulgaris at 300 or 500 mg/kg diet (Ch300 or Ch500). The basal diet rabbits exhibited the lowest values of weight, lipase, protease, and the highest feed conversion ratio, which improved noticeably with algae addition, particularly with Ap500, Ch300, and Ch500. All tested groups showed normal intestinal structure. Amylase potency, hematological indicators, and serum biochemistry revealed non-significant variation except for a higher serum total protein and lower total cholesterol in algal groups. The best GPx existed in groups fed algal diets, while favorable SOD and CAT efficiency occurred at the higher level of Arthrospira and both levels of Chlorella. In conclusion, incorporating Arthrospira or Chlorella in the diet of New Zealand white rabbits improved performance, nutrient utilization, intestinal efficacy, and antioxidants. Arthrospira (Ap500) and Chlorella (Ch300 or Ch500) have almost the same beneficial effect on rabbit performance.

Rare earths stick to rare cyanobacteria: Future potential for bioremediation and recovery of rare earth elements

Biosorption of metal ions by phototrophic microorganisms is regarded as a sustainable and alternative method for bioremediation and metal recovery. In this study, 12 cyanobacterial strains, including 7 terrestrial and 5 aquatic cyanobacteria, covering a broad phylogenetic diversity were investigated for their potential application in the enrichment of rare earth elements through biosorption. A screening for the maximum adsorption capacity of cerium, neodymium, terbium, and lanthanum was conducted in which Nostoc sp. 20.02 showed the highest adsorption capacity with 84.2-91.5 mg g^-1. Additionally, Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973, Calothrix brevissima SAG 34.79, Desmonostoc muscorum 90.03, and Komarekiella sp. 89.12 were promising candidate strains, with maximum adsorption capacities of 69.5-83.4 mg g^-1, 68.6-83.5 mg g^-1, 44.7-70.6 mg g^-1, and 47.2-67.1 mg g^-1 respectively. Experiments with cerium on adsorption properties of the five highest metal adsorbing strains displayed fast adsorption kinetics and a strong influence of the pH value on metal uptake, with an optimum at pH 5 to 6. Studies on binding specificity with mixed-metal solutions strongly indicated an ion-exchange mechanism in which Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺ ions are replaced by other metal cations during the biosorption process. Depending on the cyanobacterial strain, FT-IR analysis indicated the involvement different functional groups like hydroxyl and carboxyl groups during the adsorption process. Overall, the application of cyanobacteria as biosorbent in bioremediation and recovery of rare earth elements is a promising method for the development of an industrial process and has to be further optimized and adjusted regarding metal-containing wastewater and adsorption efficiency by cyanobacterial biomass.

Polyaniline/Glauconite Nanocomposite Adsorbent for Congo Red Dye from Textile Wastewater

Glauconite (Gl), a naturally occurring clay material, was utilized as an affordable and ecologically friendly adsorbent to explore its capturing capacity towards Congo red (CR) dye from textile industrial waste effluent. To improve adsorption and removal effectiveness, a modification technique utilizing polyaniline (PAN) was investigated. An X-ray diffractometer (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transformer infrared (FTI-R) were applied as strong familiar characterization techniques for all used adsorbents. The effects of starting concentration, contact duration, adsorbent dose, pH, and temperature on the adsorption process were also studied. The reusability of the adsorbent was studied over four adsorption cycles. The results show that PAN modification of Gl enhances the effectiveness of CR elimination. The clearance efficiency of raw and modified glauconite at 25 °C and pH 7 was 77% and 91%, respectively. The kinetics and isotherms of Congo red dye adsorption were investigated using batch studies to determine the impacts of various experimental conditions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the glauconite/polyaniline (Gl/PAN) nanocomposite rose from 11.9 mg/g for Gl to 14.1 mg/g in accordance with the isotherm analysis, which shows that the Langmuir isotherm properly characterizes the experimental data. The pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.998) properly expresses the experimental data. The reusability research proved that the adsorbents may be reused effectively. The overall results suggest that the modified Gl by PAN might be used as a low-cost, natural adsorbent for eliminating CR color from textile effluent.

Biosorption of uranium by immobilized Nostoc sp. and Scenedesmus sp.: kinetic and equilibrium modeling

Different activities related to uranium mining and nuclear industry may have a negative impact on the environment. Bioremediation of nuclear pollutants using microorganisms is an effective, safe, and economic method. The present study compared the uranium biosorption efficiency of two immobilized algae: Nostoc sp. (cyanophyte) and Scenedesmus sp. (chlorophyte). Effects of metal concentration, contact time, pH, and biosorbent dosage were also studied. The maximum biosorption capacity (60%) by Nostoc sp. was obtained at 300 mg/l uranium solution, 60 min, pH 4.5, and 4.2 g/l algal dosage, whereas Scenedesmus sp. maximally absorbed uranium (65 %) at 150 mg/l uranium solution, 40 min, pH 4.5, and 5.6 g/l of algal dosage. The interaction of metal ions as Na₂SO₄, FeCl₃, CuCl₂, NiCl₂, CoCl₂, CdCl₂, and AlCl₃ did not support the uranium biosorption by algae. The obtained data was adapted to the linearized form of the Langmuir isotherm model. The experimental q_max values were 130 and 75 mg/g for Nostoc sp. and Scenedesmus sp., respectively. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more applicable, as the calculated parameters were close to the experimental data. The biosorbents were also characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The results suggest the applicability of algae, in their immobilized form, for recovery and biosorption of uranium from aqueous solution.

Removal of lead ions (Pb2+) from water and wastewater: a review on the low-cost adsorbents

The presence of lead compounds in the environment is an issue. In particular, supply water consumption has been reported to be a significant source of human exposure to lead compounds, which can pose an elevated risk to humans. Due to its toxicity, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have classified lead (Pb) and its compounds as probable human carcinogens. The European Community Directive and World Health Organization have set the maximum acceptable lead limits in tap water as 10 µg/L. The USEPA has a guideline value of 15 µg/L in drinking water. Removal of lead ions from water and wastewater is of great importance from regulatory and health perspectives. To date, several hundred publications have been reported on the removal of lead ions from an aqueous solution. This study reviewed the research findings on the low-cost removal of lead ions using different types of adsorbents. The research achievements to date and the limitations were investigated. Different types of adsorbents were compared with respect to adsorption capacity, removal performances, sorbent dose, optimum pH, temperature, initial concentration, and contact time. The best adsorbents and the scopes of improvements were identified. The adsorption capacity of natural materials, industrial byproducts, agricultural waste, forest waste, and biotechnology-based adsorbents were in the ranges of 0.8-333.3 mg/g, 2.5-524.0 mg/g, 0.7-2079 mg/g, 0.4-769.2 mg/g, and 7.6-526.0 mg/g, respectively. The removal efficiency for these adsorbents was in the range of 13.6-100%. Future research to improve these adsorbents might assist in developing low-cost adsorbents for mass-scale applications.

A unique, inexpensive, and abundantly available adsorbent: composite of synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and banana leaves powder (BLP)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the development of a new and inexpensive adsorbent by immobilization synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto banana leaves powder (BLP), and the prepared composite (BLP)/(AgNPs) was used as an adsorbent for Zn(II), Pb(II), and Fe(III) ion removal from aqueous solutions under the influence of various reaction conditions. (BLP)/(AgNPs) demonstrated remarkable sensitivity toward Zn (II), Pb (II), and Fe (III) ions; metal ions eliminations increased with increasing contact time, agitation speed, adsorbent dose, and temperature, yielding adequate selectivity and ideal removal efficiency of 79%, 88%, and 91% for Zn (II), Pb (II), and Fe (III) ions, respectively, at pH = 5 for Zn(II) and pH = 6 for Pb(II), and Fe(III). The equilibrium contact time for elimination of Zn (II), Pb (II), and Fe (III) ions was reaches at 40 min. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin equations were used to test the obtained experimental data. Langmuir isotherm model was found to be more accurate in representing the data of Zn(II), Pb(II), and Fe(III) ions adsorption onto (BLP)/(AgNPs), with a regression coefficient (R² = 0.999) and maximum adsorption capacities of 190, 244, and 228 mg/g for Zn(II), Pb(II), and Fe(III) ions, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters proved that adsorption of metal ions is spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic, whereas Kinetic studies revealed that the process was best described by a pseudo second order kinetics.

Ammonia Bioremediation from Aquaculture Wastewater Effluents Using Arthrospira platensis NIOF17/003: Impact of Biodiesel Residue and Potential of Ammonia-Loaded Biomass as Rotifer Feed

The present work evaluated the capability of Arthrospira platensis complete biomass (ACDW) and the lipid-free biomass (LFB) to remove ammonium ions (NH4+) from aquaculture wastewater discharge. Under controlled conditions in flasks filled with 100 mL of distilled water (synthetic aqueous solution), a batch process ion-exchange was conducted by changing the main parameters including contact times (15, 30, 45, 60, 120, and 180 min), initial ammonium ion concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 100 mg·L-1), and initial pH levels (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10) at various dosages of ACDW and LFB as adsorbents (0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 g). After lab optimization, ammonia removal from real aquaculture wastewater was also examined. The removal of ammonium using ACDW and LFB in the synthetic aqueous solution (64.24% and 89.68%, respectively) was higher than that of the real aquaculture effluents (25.70% and 37.80%, respectively). The data of IR and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the existence of various functional groups in the biomass of ACDW and LFB. The adsorption equilibrium isotherms were estimated using Freundlich, Langmuir, and Halsey models, providing an initial description of the ammonia elimination capacity of A. platensis. The experimental kinetic study was suitably fit by a pseudo-second-order equation. On the other hand, as a result of the treatment of real aquaculture wastewater (RAW) using LFB and ACDW, the bacterial counts of the LFB, ACDW, ACDW-RAW, and RAW groups were high (higher than 300 CFU), while the LFB-RAW group showed lower than 100 CFU. The current study is the first work reporting the potential of ammonia-loaded microalgae biomass as a feed source for the rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis). In general, our findings concluded that B. plicatilis was sensitive to A. platensis biomass loaded with ammonia concentrations. Overall, the results in this work showed that the biomass of A. platensis is a promising candidate for removing ammonia from aquaculture wastewater.

Multi-biological combined system: A mechanistic approach for removal of multiple heavy metals

In this work, interactions of diverse fungal species by the manipulation of cell concentrations has been utilized as the driving feature for the removal of hazardous multi-metals from the aqueous solutions. This study is focused on the exploitation of internal structures of microbes as a repository of lead (Pb(II)) and nickel (Ni(II)). For the concerned purpose 24 heavy metal resistant fungi are isolated from different industrial waste sites to form different microbial combinations as a single unit 'consortia' for achieving highest possible removal rates. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing are involved for the biochemical characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the screened isolates. The identification and screening studies reveal isolated strains as two Pb resistant fungi viz. K₁SF-Pb15 (Aspergillus terreus) and SEF-Pb (Talaromyces islandicus) which have shown metal removal up to 93% and two Ni(II) tolerant fungal isolates namely, MEF-Ni-11 (Neurospora crassa) and Ni-1 (Aspergillus flavus) with removal efficiency of more than 91%. Relationship has been validated between the biosorption capacity and efficiency of the novel consortium under the influence of variable pH, time duration, initial concentration of Pb(II) and Ni(II), and inoculum size which has led to the foundation of effective and economical parameters for its exploitation in practical fields. The fungal consortia when applied on various industrial effluents has exhibited more than 95% of removal for both Pb(II) and Ni(II) simultaneously. The detailed mechanistic insight has shown the involvement of physical, chemical and ionic forces for the removal of heavy metals. So the designed novel multi-biological combined system acted as a repository for Pb(II) and Ni(II) ions with a greater potential which can be guided by the mechanistic methodology for the retrieval and remediation of multiple heavy metals from the real waste water samples.

Adsorption characteristics of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on carbon nanotube-hydroxyapatite

Based on batch experiments, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on multi-walled carbon nanotube-hydroxyapatite (MWCNT-HAP) composites in detail and explore the effects of the solid-to-liquid ratio, pH, the ionic strength, reaction time and temperature on adsorption. The results show that the adsorption on MWCNT-HAP follows Pb(II)>Cu(II)>Cd(II). With an increasing solid-to-liquid ratio, the adsorption quantity of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP decreases, whereas the removal efficiency increases. The optimal pH for adsorption is 4.0∼6.0. The effect of the ionic strength on the adsorption of Cd(II) is pronounced, whereas that on the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II) is small. In the single-component system and ternary-component system, the adsorption processes for Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP have fast kinetics, and the pseudo-second-order kinetics model can well describe the adsorption kinetics of the three heavy metals. The adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) on MWCNT-HAP is spontaneous and endothermic, and the Langmuir model can well simulate the isothermal adsorption of Pb(II) and Cu(II), whereas the Langmuir and Freundlich models can be used to describe the isothermal adsorption of Cd(II).

Cadmium biosorption and biomass production by two freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus acutus and Chlorella pyrenoidosa: An integrated approach

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in different water bodies is a matter of serious concern, as it can cause biomagnification in our food chain up to several trophic levels. In this study, Cd toxicity was investigated in the micro-algae Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus acutus exposed to various concentrations of Cd for 96 h. The inhibitory and toxic effects of Cd²⁺ on growth and photosynthetic parameters of algae were demonstrated. The bioremediation potentials of these algae were investigated and bioremoval mechanisms were confirmed using qualitative electron microscopic assay such as scanning/transmission electron microscope (S/TEM). The photochemical quenching (Fv/Fm), quantum yield (YII), relative electron transfer rate (rETR) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) were inhibited significantly and reduced by ≥ 50% of the control at MIC 50 values. The C. pyrenoidosa and S. acutus biomass have shown 30% and 20% reduction in carbon content and 10% and 12% reduction in nitrogen content at MIC50 values of Cd²⁺ treatment, respectively. During bioremoval studies, C. pyrenoidosa and S. acutus have shown 45.45% and 57.14% Cd²⁺ removal of Cd²⁺ from initial concentration of 1.5 ppm. Out of total cadmium removal C. pyrenoidosa was reported 3% bioaccumulation and 97% biosorption. Whereas S. acutus showed 1.5% accumulation and 98.5% biosorption. The S/TEM images showed the surface accumulation and bioaccumulation of cadmium inside the cytoplasm, vacuoles, and chloroplast. Thus cultivating C. pyrenoidosa and S. acutus would be beneficial in Cd²⁺ contaminated water bodies as they serve the dual purpose by Cd remediation and algal biomass production.

Batch and Fixed-Bed Biosorption of Pb (II) Using Free and Alginate-Immobilized Spirulina

The valorization of Spirulina as a potential biosorption material to treat contaminated wastewater was evaluated. Batch experiments were conducted to study the influence of pH value and ionic strength on the biosorption capacity of Spirulina. Higher removal capacity was observed at pH 5.2, while higher ionic strength was found to result in lower adsorption capacity, which suggests that ion exchange is a relevant mechanism for Pb (II) adsorption on Spirulina. The immobilization of Spirulina on alginate beads was found not only to increase the adsorption capacity, but also to overcome limitations such as unacceptable pressure drops on column systems. The Langmuir model was the most appropriate model to describe the biosorption equilibrium of lead by free and immobilized Spirulina. The experimental breakthrough curves were evaluated using the Thomas, Bohart-Adams, and dose-response models. The experimental results were most properly described by the dose-response model, which is consistent with previous results. The adsorption capacity of Spirulina was found to increase linearly with the influent lead concentration (in the range 4–20 mg L−1) at 1.6 mL min−1 flow rate. Batch and column experiments were compared to better understand the biosorption process. The promising results obtained indicate the potential use of Spirulina immobilized on alginate beads to treat industrial wastewater polluted with toxic metals.

Improvement of the sorption behavior of aluminum silicate composite toward 134Cs and 60Co radionuclides by non-living biomass of Chlorella vulgaris

Cesium and cobalt radioactive isotopes (¹³⁴Cs and ⁶⁰Co) are dangerous to human health due to their long half-life about 2.1 and 5.3 year, respectively. Developing a new composite used as an efficient sorbent for these is an urgent requirement for radioactive waste management. Herein, preparation of different materials such as aluminum silicate (AS), cultured of Chlorella vulgaris (NCV) alga, and aluminum silicate/Chlorella vulgaris (AS/NCV) composite 3:1 were prepared by wet chemical technique and used to remove the ¹³⁴Cs and ⁶⁰Co radionuclides. Different analytical techniques were used to characterize the prepared sorbents as SEM, TEM, XRD, BET, TGA/DTA, FTIR particle size analyzer, and pore size distribution. The factors affecting the sorption process as pH, temperature, contact time, and weight of adsorbent were studied. The sorption process was found to follow a pseudo-second-order mechanism. The monolayer capacity for ¹³⁴Cs radionuclide onto the aluminum silicate, non-living Chlorella vulgaris biomass, and aluminum silicate/Chlorella vulgaris composites are 66.67, 83.54, and 90.11 mg/g, respectively, and for ⁶⁰Co radionuclide are 59.31, 91.99, and 99.24 mg/g, respectively. The values of thermodynamic parameters indicate that the sorption process is endothermic and spontaneous.

Remarkably high Pb2+ binding capacity of a novel, regenerable bioremediator Papiliotrema laurentii RY1: Functional in both alkaline and neutral environments

The ability of P. laurentii strain RY1 to remediate lead (Pb²⁺) from water was investigated in batch and column studies. The lead removal ability of non-viable biomass, non-viable biomass immobilised on agar-agar (biobeads) and agar-agar at different pH was compared in batch studies. It was found that among the three, biobeads have maximum ability to remove Pb²⁺ followed by biomass and agar-agar beads. Maximum and almost equal lead removal by biobeads was observed at both neutral and alkaline pH making it a novel and more applicable bioremediator as all other reported bioremediators have a single pH for optimum activity. Studies were performed to determine the optimum conditions for lead removal from aqueous solutions for biobeads. The physical and chemical characterization of the biobeads before and after Pb²⁺ biosorption was done by using S.E.M. and F.T.I.R. respectively. The adsorption of Pb²⁺ on biobeads obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo first order kinetics. These mean that the Pb²⁺ binding sites are identical, located on the surface of the adsorbant and the rate of Pb²⁺ removal from aqueous solution is directly proportional to the number of Pb²⁺ binding sites on the biobeads. The thermodynamics of the biosorption process is also investigated. The binding capacity of the biobeads in batch study was found to be 52.91mg/gm which is higher in comparison to other reported yeast bioremediators. The used biobeads can be desorbed using 0.1(M) CaCl₂. The desorbed biobeads can be used subsequently for several cycles of lead removal making it cost-effective. Column studies were also performed for biobeads with the help of Thomas model for examining its suitability for industrial application. Maximum specific lead uptake of the biobeads when applied in the column was found to be 58.26mg/gm which being promising makes it suitable for application in industries involved in the treatment of wastewater contaminated with high amounts of lead. The high mass transfer co-efficient indicate that small sized column can be used effectively to remove high amounts of lead which makes the bioremediation process by the biobeads more economical and advantageous for industrial application. Several factors like effectiveness of the biobeads in Pb²⁺removal at both neutral and alkaline pH, reusability, high mass transfer co-efficient, regenerability and high binding capacity makes it a novel versatile, cost-effective and high utility bioremediator.

Resource recovery from wastewaters using microalgae-based approaches: A circular bioeconomy perspective

The basic concepts of circular bioeconomy are reduce, reuse and recycle. Recovery of recyclable nutrients from secondary sources could play a key role in meeting the increased demands of the growing population. Wastewaters of different origin are rich in energy and nutrients sources that can be recovered and reused in a circular bioeconomy perspective. Microalgae can effectively utilize wastewater nutrients for growth and biomass production. Integration of wastewater treatment and microalgal cultivation improves the environmental impacts of the currently used wastewater treatment methods. This review provides comprehensive information on the potential of using microalgae for the recovery of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and other micronutrients from wastewaters. Major factors influencing large scale microalgal wastewater treatment are discussed and future research perspectives are proposed to foster the future development in this area.

Phosphate Adsorption by Silver Nanoparticles-Loaded Activated Carbon derived from Tea Residue

This study presents the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution using a new silver nanoparticles-loaded tea activated carbon (AgNPs-TAC) material. In order to reduce costs, the tea activated carbon was produced from tea residue. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of impregnation ratio of AgNPs and TAC, pH solution, contact time, initial phosphate concentration and dose of AgNPs-AC on removing phosphate from aqueous solution. Results show that the best conditions for phosphate adsorption occurred at the impregnation ratio AgNPs/TAC of 3% w/w, pH 3, and contact time lasting 150 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate on AgNPs-TAC determined by the Langmuir model was 13.62 mg/g at an initial phosphate concentration of 30 mg/L. The adsorption isotherm of phosphate on AgNPs-TAC fits well with both the Langmuir and Sips models. The adsorption kinetics data were also described well by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models with high correlation coefficients of 0.978 and 0.966, respectively. The adsorption process was controlled by chemisorption through complexes and ligand exchange mechanisms. This study suggests that AgNPs-TAC is a promising, low cost adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous solution.

Application of multivariate analysis on naphthalene adsorption in aqueous solutions

Naphthalene (NAP) is found as a pollutant in water, soil, and air, and adsorption is the most prominent removal process of this compound, among the methods studied. A study concerning the types of adsorbents and the parameters with the greatest influence on the adsorption process is interesting to direct future works on new adsorbents. The use of multivariate data analysis tools becomes an appealing way to compile data obtained from bibliographic reviews and to establish a behavior in NAP adsorption. This work aims to evaluate the parameters with greater influence on NAP adsorption process regarding adsorption capacity (qe_exp) with the principal component analysis (PCA), and to group common NAP adsorbents by chemical characteristics through hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The variables qe_exp, S, [NAP]₀, T, CT, and [Ads] were used to perform PCA with correlation matrix. For the HCA, the variables S, [NAP]₀, T, CT, and [Ads] with average linkage method (UPGMA) and Euclidean distance were used. Through PCA, it is possible to infer that S and [NAP]₀ are the factors with greater influence in qe_exp of NAP, while T, CT, and [Ads] have little correlation. PCA also shows that activated charcoal is the adsorbent with higher qe_exp. HCA grouped the adsorbents into four groups by their chemical classes, except group A. Both PCA and HCA methods show themselves as potential tools to evaluate a data set of NAP adsorption processes.

Nanocellulose–organic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent for diuron removal from aqueous solution: optimization using response surface methodology

Herbicides have been ubiquitous in water environments in recent years, and so it is an appealing proposition to develop an efficient adsorbent for the adsorption of diuron. Therefore, the present study investigated a cellulose nanocrystal/organic montmorillonite nanocomposite adsorbent (CNC/CTM) and its adsorption properties towards diuron present in water. The structure and characteristics of the adsorbent used in this study were characterized by various characterization methods. The optimal diuron adsorption conditions for the CNC/CTM nanocomposite were analyzed based on the response surface methodology (RSM). The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of diuron adsorption were investigated. The results indicated that the adsorption process is the result of hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobicity of the alkyl chain. Under the optimal adsorption conditions, 0.07 g L⁻¹ CNC/CTM adsorbed 5.86 mg L⁻¹ diuron in less than 318.68 min and an efficiency of 82.32% could be achieved. The simulation results showed that the adsorption capacity of CNC/CTM for diuron removal followed the Sips model most closely. The maximum adsorption capacity was approximately 69.04 mg g⁻¹ at 288 K. The experimental data was described best by a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, signifying a chemical adsorption process. The adsorbent can be reused at least five times after simple solvent washing. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the adsorption process of diuron present in water.

CNCs and CTM were combined to obtain a nanocomposite used to remove diuron in water. The adsorption of the nanocomposite was analyzed using response surface methodology, isothermal adsorption model and adsorption kinetics.

Cadmium adsorption using novel MnFe2O4-TiO2-UIO-66 magnetic nanoparticles and condition optimization using a response surface methodology

In this study, magnetic nanocomposites (UIO-66-MnFe₂O₄-TiO₂) were synthesized based on the metal–organic framework. To investigate the synthesized adsorbent structure, XRD, SEM, FT-IR, BET, and VSM techniques were used, and also an EDX test was applied after adsorption of Cd(ii). The synthesized nanocomposite was used for Cd(ii) adsorption. The effects of four parameters such as the amount of adsorbent (0.05 to 0.25 g), pH (1 to 9), adsorption time (24 to 120 minutes), initial amount of metal ion (100 to 900 mg), at five levels (−2 to +2) were evaluated during the experiment based on the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) using Central Composite Design (CCD) and then, the optimal levels were determined. The F-value and P-value of the fitted second order model were obtained as 6039.62 and 0.0001, respectively. Optimization of the values was also performed for variables and, initial concentration of metal, pH, adsorption time and amount of adsorbent were obtained as 5.2 mg l⁻¹, 5, 63 minutes, and 0.18 g, respectively as optimum conditions. For optimal conditions, the maximum adsorbance was equal to 98%. Investigation of kinetic and isotherm adsorption showed that a second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm cover the Cd(ii) adsorption data well. It was also revealed that the adsorbent was removed from the environment by an external magnetic field.

Biosorption optimization, characterization, immobilization and application of Gelidium amansii biomass for complete Pb2+ removal from aqueous solutions

Lead (Pb2+) is among the most toxic heavy metals even in low concentration and cause toxicity to human's health and other forms of life. It is released into the environment through different industrial activities. The biosorption of Pb2+ from aqueous solutions by biomass of commonly available, marine alga Gelidium amansii was studied. The effects of different variables on Pb2+ removal were estimated by a two-level Plackett-Burman factorial design to determine the most significant variables affecting Pb2+ removal % from aqueous solutions. Initial pH, Pb2+ concentration and temperature were the most significant factors affecting Pb2+ removal chosen for further optimization using rotatable central composite design. The maximum removal percentage (100%) of Pb2+ from aqueous solution by Gelidium amansii biomass was found under the optimum conditions: initial Pb2+ concentration of 200 mg/L, temperature 45 °C, pH 4.5, Gelidium amansii biomass of 1 g/L and contact time of 60 minutes at static condition. FTIR analysis of algal biomass revealed the presence of carbonyl, methylene, phosphate, carbonate and phenolic groups, which are involved in the Pb2+ ions biosorption process. SEM analysis demonstrates the ability of Gelidium amansii biomass to adsorb and removes Pb2+ from aqueous solution. EDS analysis shows the additional optical absorption peak corresponding to the Pb2+ which confirms the involvement of Gelidium amansii biomass in the adsorption of Pb2+ ions from aqueous solution. Immobilized Gelidium amansii biomass was effective in Pb2+ removal (100%) from aqueous solution at an initial concentration of 200 mg/L for 3 h. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the red marine alga Gelidium amansii biomass is a promising, efficient, ecofriendly, cost-effective and biodegradable biosorbent for the removal of Pb2+ from the environment and wastewater effluents.

Surface treated Pteris vittata L. pinnae powder used as an efficient biosorbent of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) from aqueous solution

Biosorption is a surface-dependent phenomenon. Surface modifications by chemical treatment methods could either improve or reduce the biosorption capacity of potential biosorbents. In the present work, pristine Pteris vittata L. pinnae (PPV) powder was treated separately with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium chloride (CaCl₂), and nitric acid (HNO₃). The pristine and treated biosorbents were used to assess the biosorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) as a function of pH. Kinetics and adsorption isotherms were studied. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope combined with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) spectroscopic techniques were used to characterize the biosorbents before and after chemical treatments. The possible functional groups contributing to the metal sorption were identified. Results revealed favorable biosorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(VI) described by pseudo-second order kinetics. NaOH-treated P. vittata (NPV) showed higher biosorption capacity for Pb(II) and Cd(II) compared to that of PPV. ATR-FTIR studies indicated that -OH, -COOH, and -NH₂ groups were mainly involved in Cr(VI) and -OH in Pb(II) and Cd(II) biosorption. The enhanced efficiency of NPV and CaCl₂ treated P. vittata (CPV) in the uptake of Pb(II) and Cd(II) compared to PPV can be associated with their altered physicochemical characters.

Biological approaches to tackle heavy metal pollution: A survey of literature

Pollution by heavy metals has been identified as a global threat since the inception of industrial revolution. Heavy metal contamination induces serious health and environmental hazards due to its toxic nature. Remediation of heavy metals by conventional methods is uneconomical and generates a large quantity of secondary wastes. On the other hand, biological agents such as plants, microorganisms etc. offer easy and eco-friendly ways for metal removal; hence, considered as efficient and alternative tools for metal removal. Bioremediation involves adsorption, reduction or removal of contaminants from the environment through biological resources (both microorganisms and plants). The heavy metal remediation properties of microorganisms stem from their self defense mechanisms such as enzyme secretion, cellular morphological changes etc. These defence mechanisms comprise the active involvement of microbial enzymes such as oxidoreductases, oxygenases etc, which influence the rates of bioremediation. Further, immobilization techniques are improving the practice at industrial scales. This article summarizes the various strategies inherent in the biological sorption and remediation of heavy metals.

Characterization, preparation, and uses of nanomagnetic Fe3O4 impregnated onto fish scale as more efficient adsorbent for Cu2+ ion adsorption

In this research, the Cu²⁺ ion adsorption from aqueous solution was investigated by fish scale (FS) and nanomagnetic (Fe₃O₄) loaded fish scale (MFS) from fishery biomass. We characterized the structure and morphology of synthesized magnetic adsorbent by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), FESEM, and XRD. The FTIR and XRD tests confirmed the collagen fibers, apatite crystals, and nanomagnetite particles presence in the MFS structure. The isotherm models of Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich were exerted to the empirical equilibrium data, by which was found that the Langmuir equation have the best fit to the experimental data in comparison to the other isotherm equations. The maximum capacities of monolayer coverage of FS and MFS for adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions were achieved, respectively, 61.73 and 103.1 mg g^-1 based on Langmuir isotherm at 45 °C. It was also discovered that the Cu²⁺ ion adsorption onto MFS was totally a physisorption-controlled process. It was perceived that the model of pseudo-second order rate kinetics also could be applied for predicting of studied adsorption processes. Here, the adsorption was a spontaneous and endothermic process because of the negative and the positive values of ∆G⁰ and ∆H⁰, respectively. The reusability potential of the used adsorbents was studied, so that the results showed an efficiency of 76.5 and 83.92% for FS and MFS, respectively, after four adsorption-desorption cycles.

Application of principal component analysis for the optimisation of lead(II) biosorption

Current study was focused on optimising lead(II) biosorption carried out by living cells of Arthrospira platensis using Principal Component Analysis. Various experimental conditions were considered: initial metal concentration (50 and 100 mg/l), solution pH (4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5) and contact time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min) at constant rotary speed 200 rpm. It was found that when the biomass was separated from experimental solutions by the filtration, almost 50% of initial metal dose was removed by the filter paper. Moreover, pH was the most important parameter influencing examined processes. The Principal Component Analysis indicated that the most optimum conditions for lead(II) biosorption were metal initial concentration 100 mg/l, pH 4.5 and time 60 min. According to the analysis of the first component it might be stated that the lead(II) uptake increases in time. In overall, it was found to be useful for analysing data obtained in biosorption experiments and eliminating insignificant experimental conditions. Experimental data fitted Langmuir and Dubinin–Radushkevich models indicating that physical and chemical absorption take place at the same time. Further studies are necessary to verify how sorption–desorption cycles affect A. platensis cells.

The role of Arthrobacter viscosus in the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

The aim of this paper was to establish the optimum parameters for the biosorption of Pb(II) by dead and living Arthrobacter viscosus biomass from aqueous solution. It was found that at an initial pH of 4 and 26 °C, the dead biomass was able to remove 97% of 100 mg/L Pb(II), while the living biomass removed 96% of 100 mg/L Pb(II) at an initial pH of 6 and 28 ± 2 °C. The results were modeled using various kinetic and isotherm models so as to find out the mechanism of Pb(II) removal by A. viscosus. The modeling results indicated that Pb(II) biosorption by A. viscosus was based on a chemical reaction and that sorption occurred at the functional groups on the surface of the biomass. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (SEM-EDX) analyses confirmed these findings. The suitability of living biomass as biosorbent in the form of a biofilm immobilized on star-shaped polyethylene supports was also demonstrated. The results suggest that the use of dead and living A. viscosus for the removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions is an effective alternative, considering that up to now it has only been used in the form of biofilms supported on different zeolites.

Equilibrium Isotherm, Kinetic Modeling, Optimization, and Characterization Studies of Cadmium Adsorption by Surface-Engineered Escherichia coli

Background

Amongst the methods that remove heavy metals from environment, biosorption approaches have received increased attention because of their environmentally friendly and cost-effective feature, as well as their superior performances.

Methods

In the present study, we investigated the ability of a surface-engineered Escherichia coli, carrying the cyanobacterial metallothionein on the cell surface, in the removal of Ca (II) from solution under different experimental conditions. The biosorption process was optimized using central composite design. In parallel, the kinetics of metal biosorption was studied, and the rate constants of different kinetic models were calculated.

Results

Cadmium biosorption is followed by the second-order kinetics. Freundlich and Langmuir equations were used to analyze sorption data; characteristic parameters were determined for each adsorption isotherm. The biosorption process was optimized using the central composite design. The optimal cadmium sorption capacity (284.69 nmol/mg biomass) was obtained at 40°C (pH 8) and a biomass dosage of 10 mg. The influence of two elutants, EDTA and CaCl2, was also assessed on metal recovery. Approximately, 68.58% and 56.54% of the adsorbed cadmium were removed by EDTA and CaCl2 during desorption, respectively. The Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) analysis indicated that carboxyl, amino, phosphoryl, thiol, and hydroxyl are the main chemical groups involved in the cadmium bioadsorption process.

Conclusion

Results from this study implied that chemical adsorption on the heterogeneous surface of E. coli E and optimization of adsorption parameters provides a highly efficient bioadsorbent.

Biosorption of Pb(II) by Bacillus badius AK strain originating from rotary drum compost of water hyacinth

The presence of heavy metals in the environment due to industrial activities is of serious concern because of their toxic behaviour towards humans and other forms of life. Biosorption of Pb(II) using dry bacterial biomass of Bacillus badius AK, previously isolated from water hyacinth compost, has been undertaken in batch system. The optimum conditions of biosorption were determined by investigating the initial pH, contact time, initial biomass dosage at constant temperature of 40 °C, initial metal concentration of 100 mg/L and rotational speed of 150 rpm. The optimum pH was found to be 5 and equilibrium contact time was 2.5 h. The maximum biosorption capacity of Pb(II) on Bacillus badius AK was 138.8 mg/g at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L. A kinetics study revealed that the adsorption process followed pseudo second order rate kinetics. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. Characterization of the biomass indicated the presence of several functional groups. The results indicated that the bacterium Bacillus badius AK is efficient for the removal of Pb(II).

Effects of bloom-forming cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances on the adsorption of cadmium onto kaolinite: behaviors and possible mechanisms

Cyanobacterial blooms result in high level of cyanobacterial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in water. The effects of bloom-forming cyanobacterial EPS on the distribution of Cd(II) in the interface between sediment and water is unknown. Clay is a main component in sediment. The effects of EPS, originated from a typical bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa, on the adsorption and desorption characteristics of Cd(II) by kaolinite were investigated in this study. Results of XRD analysis indicated that cyanobacterial EPS bound on the surface of kaolinite. The composite of kaolinite + EPS showed higher adsorption capacity toward Cd(II) than pure kaolinite, and hydroxyl groups were involved in the adsorption processes. The data for the adsorption of Cd(II) by kaolinite are well fitted by both Langmuir model and Freundlich model, whereas only Freundlich model well describes the adsorption data of Cd(II) by the composite of kaolinite + EPS. The adsorption of Cd(II) onto kaolinite was an exothermic process, but it became an endothermic process after EPS incorporation. Results of desorption showed that EPS incorporation increased the adsorption of kaolinite toward Cd(II) through physical adsorption, ion exchange and complexation.

Evaluating the ameliorative efficacy of Spirulina platensis on spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in cadmium-intoxicated rats

The present study was conducted to evaluate the ameliorative efficacy of Spirulina platensis (SP) on reproductive dysfunctions induced by cadmium chloride (CdCl2) in male rats. Rats (n = 40) were divided into five groups (eight rats/each). Group 1: served as control without any treatment. Group 2: Rats were administered SP (150 mg/kg body weight (BW)) in drinking water for 10 days. Group 3: Rats were subcutaneously injected with CdCl2 (2 mg/kg BW) daily for 10 days. Group 4: Rats were co-treated with both CdCl2 (2 mg/kg BW) and SP (150 mg/kg BW) daily for 10 days (SP prophylactic group). Group 5: Rats received CdCl2 for 10 days followed by administration of SP alone in drinking water daily for another 30 days with the same mentioned routes and doses (SP treatment group). From our findings, the administration of SP alone or co-administration with Cd significantly attenuated the harmful effects of Cd, suggesting its beneficial role in improving spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis after Cd exposure.

Lead removal by Spirulina platensis biomass

In this investigation, we report on the biosorption of Pb (II) from aqueous solutions by the nonliving biomass of the micro-alga (cyanobacterium) Spirulina platensis. Propagation of the micro-alga was carried out in outside oblong raceway ponds. The biomass was cleaned, dried and used for the investigation. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, temperature, initial concentration of Pb (II), and contact time on the adsorption of lead by the dry biomass were studied. The experiments were carried out in 250 ml conical flasks containing 100 ml of test solutions using an orbital incubator at 150 rpm. Concentrations of the metal before and after the experiments were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Very high levels of Pb (II) removal (>91%) were obtained. The optimum conditions for maximal adsorption by S. platensis were found to be pH 3; 2 g of adsorbent dose; incubation at 26°C; 100 mg/l of lead initial concentration and 60 minutes of contact time. The experimental data fitted well with Freundlich isotherm equation with R(2) values greater than 0.97. Based on our results, we recommend the utilization of S. platensis biomass for heavy metal removal from aqueous solutions.
