The pathway of dechlorination of PCB congener by a photochemical chain process in 2-propanol: the role of medium and quenching

Photochemical degradation of persistent organic pollutants (PCDD/FS, PCBS, PBDES, DDTS and HCB) in hexane and fish oil

This study has investigated the photochemical degradation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) and some organochlorine pesticides, such as hexachlorobenzene (HCB) or dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) in hexane under UV irradiation at 254 nm. All pollutants were completely degraded after 3.5 h of exposition to the UV light. Moreover, this technique was applied to remove persistent organic pollutants from fish oil, with eliminations of a 34% for PCDD/Fs, 53% for PCBs, 59% for HCB, 67% for PBDEs and 73% for DDTs after 12 h of exposition to the UV light (254 nm). Dioxin-like PCBs increased their concentration after the treatment, probably due to the dehalogenation of other more chlorinated congeners. The fatty acids analysis of the fish oil revealed that the most important ω-3 fatty acids -EPA and DHA-were degraded to 67 and 70% of their initial content respectively. For these reasons elimination of persistent organic pollutants with photochemical treatment has limited applications for oils with food-purposes. However, it still can be a useful technique for decontamination of industrial oils.

Chemical remediation and advanced oxidation process of polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated soils: a review

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic organic compounds ubiquitously distributed worldwide due to their persistence, long-range atmospheric transport, and bioaccumulation. Owing to teratogenic properties, PCBs are a global environmental problem. Different physical, biological, and chemical techniques are utilized for the remediation of PCBs. This review paper discusses the recent development in photocatalytic and chemical techniques for the remediation of PCBs in contaminated soils. In particular, the photocatalytic degradation of PCBs combined with soil washing, Fe-based reductive dichlorination, and advanced oxidation process (Fenton advance oxidation and persulfate oxidation) is discussed and reviewed in detail. The review suggested that advanced oxidation is an efficient remediation technique with 77-99% of removal efficiency of PCBs. Persulfate oxidation is the most suitable technique which could work at normal environmental conditions (such as pH, temperature, soil organic matter (SOM), etc.). Different environmental factors such as pH, temperature, and SOM affect the Fe-based reductive dechlorination and Fenton advance oxidation techniques. The surfactants and organic solvents used in soil washing combined with photocatalytic degradation affect the degradation capability of these techniques. This review will contribute to PCBs degradation by the detailed discussion of development in chemical technique future perspective and research needs.

Review of chemical and electrokinetic remediation of PCBs contaminated soils and sediments

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are manmade organic compounds, and pollution due to PCBs has been a global environmental problem because of their persistence, long-range atmospheric transport and bioaccumulation. Many physical, chemical and biological technologies have been utilized to remediate PCBs contaminated soils and sediments, and there are some emerging new technologies and combined methods that may provide cost-effective alternatives to the existing remediation practice. This review provides a general overview on the recent developments in chemical treatment and electrokinetic remediation (EK) technologies related to PCBs remediation. In particular, four technologies including photocatalytic degradation of PCBs combined with soil washing, Fe-based reductive dechlorination, advanced oxidation process, and EK/integrated EK technology (e.g., EK coupled with chemical oxidation, nanotechnology and bioremediation) are reviewed in detail. We focus on the fundamental principles and governing factors of chemical technologies, and EK/integrated EK technologies. Comparative analysis of these technologies including their major advantages and disadvantages is summarized. The existing problems and future prospects of these technologies regarding PCBs remediation are further highlighted.

Distribution of free radicals and intermediates during the photodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyls strongly affected by cosolvents and TiO₂ catalyst

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) pose potential ecological risk because of their high toxicity and carcinogenicity. Photodegradation, which is an important process for the removal of PCBs, is greatly influenced by the cosolvent and catalyst. Hence, it is important to explore their effects on the photodegradation behavior of PCBs. In this study, 2,4,4'-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28) was selected as a model compound, and the effects of two typical cosolvents, namely acetone and ethanol, and TiO2 catalyst on the distributions of free radicals and intermediates were investigated. Interestingly, the TiO2 catalyst did not promote PCB28 photodegradation. Moreover, the free radical distribution was greatly influenced in the presence of the TiO2 catalyst, while was only slightly affected in its absence by the cosolvent kinds. The main photodegradation pathways are proposed on the basis of the distribution of detected intermediates, which were significantly regulated by both the cosolvent and TiO2 catalyst. The results provide novel insights into the photodegradation of PCBs and may have important implications for choosing cosolvent in desorbing soil PCBs and consequently enhancing PCBs degradation.

Photochemistry of tetra- through hexa-brominated dioxins/furans, hydroxylated and native BDEs in different media

The aim of this study was to investigate (i) the behavior of native PBDEs during UV irradiation in different media, (ii) the possibility of their transformation into hydroxylated PBDEs in aqueous media, and (iii) the photochemistry/levels of brominated dioxins/furans formed from hydroxylated PBDEs. Debromination leading to the formation of a wide range of low-brominated congeners was the main path of photocatalyzed transformations of PBDEs. In organic solvents other than toluene, BDEs degraded in line with the pseudo first order kinetics (10-20 min half-life, depending on congener type and reaction medium). Irradiated BDE 209 congener behaved quite differently than lower-brominated BDEs: detectable amounts of various bromo-benzenes were found. That suggests that UV irradiation of BDE 209 leads to cleavage of the ether bound between the congener's aromatic rings. Formation of bromophenyl bromo-methyl-biphenyl ethers or benzyl-bromophenoxybenzenes was observed in irradiated PBDE toluene-based solutions. The total concentration of OH-BDEs found in the reaction medium did not exceed 0.2% of the initial precursor mass. Moreover, lower-brominated congeners detected in the reaction medium indicate subsequent debromination of OH-BDEs or hydro-debromination of the degraded congeners. Brominated dioxins and low levels of furans were observed in samples containing OH-BDEs. The total mass of dioxins did not exceed 3.5% of the initial precursor mass.

Theoretical investigations on direct photolysis mechanisms of polychlorinated diphenyl ethers

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) are a focus of current environmental concern as a group of ubiquitous potential persistent organic pollutants. There are still significant gaps in our knowledge concerning the photolysis mechanisms of PCDEs. In this study, the direct photolysis mechanisms of PCDEs were investigated by density functional theory. The direct photolysis of PCDEs has three potential reaction pathways including photodechlorination, C-O bond photodissociation, and PCDFs formation. Taking a representative PCDE (i.e., CDE8) for example, we found that C-Cl bond dissociation is the rate-determining step for the photodechlorination. Chlorobenzene is predicted to be photoproduct of CDE8 through the photodissociation of the C-O bond. Furthermore, the calculated mean bond dissociation energies of both C-Cl and C-O bonds of 20 PCDEs decrease with the increased degree of chlorination. It is also found that the photoactivity of PCDEs increases with an increase of chlorination degree by evaluating the average charge of Cl atoms and mean bond dissociation energies of C-Cl and C-O bonds from reaction thermodynamics. Our findings provided a new insight into the mechanisms of direct photolysis of PCDEs, which may be useful in the future in utilizing quantum chemistry calculation in investigating the behavior and fate of organic pollutants in the environment.

Effect of Carrier Gas Flow Rate in Thermal Desorption Process of PCBs Contaminated Soil

A real PCBs contaminated soil was heated at 500°C using pure nitrogen as carrier gas under different flow rate to investigate the influence of carrier gas flow rate on the thermal desorption process. After 1 hour thermal treatment, the residual PCBs in soil decreased and the removal efficiency (RE) of PCBs is up to 95.1%. The distributions of PCBs in soil under different flow rate were identical. The World Health Organization toxic equivalency quantity (WHO TEQ) of PCBs in soil got its lowest value at 400Nml/min. Tetra-and higher chlorinated PCBs desorbed to carrier gas increased with increased flow rate, while the total amount of PCBs, Tri-and lower chlorinated PCBs first increased then decreased. The distributions of PCBs in carrier gas became more closely to the raw soil with increased flow rate. The TEQ of PCBs in carrier gas increased with increased flow rate. Increased flow rate enhanced the mass transfer of PCBs in the soil but shortened the preheating time of carrier gas and the retention time of carries gas, weakening the mass transfer and degradation process in gas phase. The RE of WHO TEQ of PCDDs in treated soil decreased from 86.7% to 83.2% with increased flow rate while the RE of WHO TEQ of PCDFs decreased from 85.4% to 70.0%. After thermal treatment process, the total amount of PCDD/Fs TEQ in soil and carrier gas increase from 43.8% to 18.6% times of that in raw soil. Considering removal efficiency of PCBs and PCDD/Fs and generation of PCDD/Fs in soil and gas phase, an optimized flow rate should be set at about 400Nml/min.

Theoretical investigation on photodechlorination mechanism of polychlorinated biphenyls

Photodechlorination is a key process affecting the fate and effect of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the environment. However, there are still numerous gaps in our knowledge, which become apparent in photodechlorination mechanism of PCBs. We investigated the conformations of 35 PCB congeners in the ground state and the first triplet excited state (T1), and predicted the photodechlorination pathway of the PCBs by calculating bond dissociation energies of the C-Cl bonds and activation energies of the C-Cl bond dissociation in the excited T1 state. Results show that the torsional degree of the two benzene rings of the PCBs depends on the number of ortho chlorines because of steric effect in the ground state. The two benzene rings of the PCBs with low photoreactivity tend to be coplanar and their torsional degree becomes lower in the excited T1 state compared with those in the ground state. The serious deformation and non-coplane of the benzene rings of some PCBs (e.g. PCB138) in the excited T1 state reduces the conjugation between the two benzene rings, implying that these PCBs have high photoreactivity. The dissociation of the C-Cl bond is the rate-determining step in the photodechlorination reactions of PCBs when the hydrogen donor is methanol. The main photodechlorination pathways predicted in this study are in good agreement with previous experimental results. Our results have provided new insights into mechanism of PCBs photodechlorination, which could be useful in the future in utilizing quantum chemistry calculation in investigating the environmental behavior and fate of organic pollutants.

Electron transfer sensitized photodechlorination of surfactant solubilized PCB 138

Sensitized photodechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyl, PCB 138, in three different surfactant solutions was studied. The sensitizer of choice was leuco-methylene blue, which was produced in situ from methylene blue using either triethylamine or sodium borohydride. Three types of surfactants, anionic (SDS), neutral (TWEEN 80), and cationic (CTAB) at different concentrations were investigated. The neutral and cationic surfactants were found to be more effective than anionic. In each case the surfactant concentration was found to play a significant role in the rate of dechlorination. For different sensitized systems (triethylamine or sodium borohydride), a different product distribution and a different pathway of dechlorination was observed.

Dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls in transformer oil using UV and visible light

A study on dechlorination of PCB138 in transformer oil (TO) and 2-propanol (IPA) using 254 nm ultraviolet (UV) light as well as dye sensitized visible light has been conducted. Studies on dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in TO using visible light in the presence of methylene blue (MB) and triethylamine (TEA) (providing a 'photocatalytic' cycle) in both deaerated and aerated conditions have been conducted to determine effects of TO, MB and TEA on reaction rates. The results show that photolytic methods are effective in treating PCBs in TO, and that the oil plays a limited adverse role. Under UV irradiation, PCB 138 can be >99% dechlorinated in the presence 0.06% (w/w) TO in IPA within 1 h with a rate constant of 0.0853 min(-1), while 47% of PCB138 can be dechlorinated in 92.1% (w/w) TO in IPA within 2 h with a rate constant of 0.0051 min(-1). In the 'photocatalytic' system, 94% reduction of PCB 138 was achieved within 30 min with a rate constant of 0.0968 min(-1) when the solvent was 60.70% (w/w) TO in IPA, while 71% dechlorination of PCB138 was achieved within 30 min with a rate constant of 0.0382 min(-1) when 81.62% (w/w) TO was present. In treatment of 30-73 ppm PCBs in TO, the optimal concentration of MB and TEA were found to be 0.5 g/L and 58.08 g/L respectively. Because of quenching by oxygen, deaeration of the solution is necessary for an efficient reaction. The photocatalytic system is especially adapted for treating lower concentration of PCBs in TO.

Uptake, translocation and metabolism of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in maize (Zea mays L.)

A hydroponic experiment was conducted in the present study to investigate and compare plant uptake, translocation and metabolism of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) of BDE-15, BDE-28 and BDE-47 and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) of PCB-15, PCB-28 and PCB-47 in maize. Root concentrations of BDE-15, BDE-28 and BDE-47 were consistently higher than PCB-15, PCB-28 and PCB-47, respectively. A significantly positive correlation was found between logRCF (root concentration factor) and logKow of these PBDEs and PCBs, suggesting a control role of their partitioning in plant uptake. The translocation factors (TFs, Cstem/Croot) of PBDEs were generally lower than those of PCBs of the same halogen-substitutions, demonstrating easier transport of PCBs than PBDEs. Metabolites mono-, di- and tri-BDEs and PCBs were detected, suggesting the existence of in vivo metabolism of PBDEs and PCBs in maize. Dehalogenation and rearrangement of halogen atoms were identified, and some similarities but also significant differences existed between the PBDEs and PCBs. PBDEs in maize were, in general, more susceptible to metabolism compared with PCBs of the same halogen-substitutions. This is the first comparative report on the uptake, translocation and metabolism of PBDEs and PCBs in plants.

Photocatalytic dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls using leuco-methylene blue sensitization, broad spectrum visible lamps, or light emitting diodes

Photocatalytic routes to dechlorinate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have considerable potential for development. This paper describes efficient dye-photocatalyzed processes which can be driven by long wavelength light sources including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent lamps, and quite probably sunlight. The reduced form of methylene blue (MB), leuco-methylene blue (LMB), has previously been found to photoinduce dechlorination of chloroaromatics with an electron transfer from its triplet excited state. Sodium borohydride, used in this case is an efficient sacrificial reductant, which can maintain LMB as the major species in competition with air oxidation of LMB to MB. There is also evidence that it plays a further (chain reaction) role in promoting the LMB photodechlorination process as well. The generality of the photoelectron transfer from reduced members of the phenothiazine dye family is demonstrated with phenothiazine and leuco-methylene green when a wavelength (UV) is chosen to produce the highly reductive triplet. It is likely that dechlorination can be initiated by many triplet excited states with adequate reduction potential.

Photocatalytic dechlorination of PCB 138 using leuco-methylene blue and visible light; reaction conditions and mechanisms

A study of dechlorination of PCB 138, under visible light employing methylene blue (MB) and triethylamine (TEA) in acetonitrile/water has been conducted to investigate the details of the mechanism of dechlorination and to determine the efficiency of the process for this representative congener. Two other amines, N-methyldiethanolamine (MEDA) and (triethanolamine) TEOA also replaced TEA and two other solvents, methanol and ethanol replacing acetonitrile were examined for effects on reaction rates. The results show that PCB 138 can be dechlorinated efficiently in this photocatalytic reaction. Clarifying ambiguities in several previous reports, the reduced form of MB, leuco-methylene blue (LMB) was identified as responsible for the photoreaction with its excited state transferring an electron to PCBs; oxidized LMB (i.e. MB) is reduced back to LMB by the excess amine present. The reaction depends on a cycle driven by the amine as a sacrificial electron donor. MEDA proved to be the most efficient electron donor; apparently in consequence of the most favourable steady state concentration of LMB. Methanol and ethanol may be used to replace acetonitrile with little change in the efficiency of the reaction.
