Field study on the uptake and translocation of PBDEs by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in soils amended with sewage sludge

Uptake, biotransformation and physiological response of TBBPA derivatives in Helianthus annus

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its derivatives are widely used as brominated flame retardants. Because of their high production and wide environment distribution, TBBPA derivatives have increased considerable concern. Previous studies have primarily focused on TBBPA, with limited information available on its derivative. In this study, we investigated the uptake, biotransformation and physiological response of two derivatives, Tetrabromobisphenol A bis(allyl ether) (TBBPA BAE) and Tetrabromobisphenol A bis(2,3-dibromopropylether) (TBBPA BDBPE), in Helianthus annus (H. annus) through a short-term hydroponic assay. The results revealed that H. annus could absorb TBBPA BAE and TBBPA BDBPE from solution, with removal efficiencies of 98.33 ± 0.5% and 98.49 ± 1.56% after 10 days, respectively, which followed first-order kinetics. TBBPA BAE was absorbed, translocated and accumulated while TBBPA BDBPE couldn't be translocated upward due to its high hydrophobicity and low solubility. The concentrations of TBBPA derivatives in plants peaked within 72 h, and then decreased. We identified twelve metabolites resulting from ether bond breakage, debromination, and hydroxylation in H. annus. The high-level TBBPA BAE suppressed the growth and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) content of H. annus, while TBBPA BDBPE didn't pose a negative effect on H. annus. TBBPA BAE and TBBPA BDBPE increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT), with higher levels of these enzymes activity found in high concentration treatments. Contrastingly, TBBPA BAE exhibited higher toxicity than TBBPA BDBPE, as indicated by greater antioxidant enzyme activity. The findings of this study develop better understanding of biotransformation mechanisms of TBBPA derivatives in plants, contributing to the assessment of the environmental and human health impacts of these contaminants.

Investigating a new approach for magnetic ionic liquids: Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction coupled to pyrolysis gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry to determine flame retardants in sewage sludge samples

This study addresses the analysis of emerging contaminants, often using chromatographic techniques coupled to mass spectrometry. However, sample preparation is often required prior to instrumental analysis, and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) is a viable strategy in this context. DLLME stands out for its ability to reduce sample and solvent volumes. Notably, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction using magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) has gained relevance due to the incorporation of paramagnetic components in the chemical structure, thereby eliminating the centrifugation step. A pyrolizer was selected in this work to introduce sample onto the GC column, since the MIL is extremely viscous and incompatible with direct introduction through an autosampler. This study is the first to report the use of a DLLME/MIL technique for sample introduction through a pyrolizer in gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This approach enables the MIL to be compatible with gas chromatography systems, resulting in optimized analytical and instrument performance. The analysis of polybrominated diphenyl ether flame retardants (PBDEs) was focused on the PBDE congeners 28, 47, 99, 100, and 153 in sewage sludge samples. The [P6,6,6,14+]2[MnCl42-] MIL was thoroughly characterized using UV-Vis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy, as well as thermal analysis. In the chromatographic method, a pyrolyzer was used in the sample introduction step (Py-GC-MS), and critical injection settings were optimized using multivariate approaches. Optimized conditions were achieved with a temperature of 220 °C, a pyrolysis time of 0.60 min, and an injection volume of 9.00 μL. DLLME optimization was performed through central compound planning (CCD), and optimized training conditions were achieved with 10.0 mg of MIL, 3.00 μL of acetonitrile (ACN) as dispersive solvent, extraction time of 60 s, and volume of a sample of 8.50 mL. Precision was observed to range from 0.11 % to 12.5 %, with limits of detection (LOD) of 44.4 μg L-1 for PBDE 28, 16.9 μg L-1 for PBDE 47 and PBDE 99, 33.0 μg L-1 for PBDE 100 and 375 μg L-1 for PBDE 153. PBDE 28 was identified and analyzed in the sludge sample at a concentration of 800 μg L-1. The use of MIL in dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction combined with pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry enables identification and quantification of PBDEs in sewage sludge samples at concentrations down to the µg L-1 level.

Bromine contamination and risk management in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

Bromine (Br) is widely distributed through the lithosphere and hydrosphere, and its chemistry in the environment is affected by natural processes and anthropogenic activities. While the chemistry of Br in the atmosphere has been comprehensively explored, there has never been an overview of the chemistry of Br in soil and aquatic systems. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the sources, geochemistry, health and environmental threats, remediation approaches, and regulatory guidelines pertaining to Br pollution in terrestrial and aquatic environments. Volcanic eruptions, geothermal streams, and seawater are the major natural sources of Br. In soils and sediments, Br undergoes natural cycling between organic and inorganic forms, with bromination reactions occurring both abiotically and through microbial activity. For organisms, Br is a non-essential element; it is passively taken up by plant roots in the form of the Br- anion. Elevated Br- levels can limit plant growth on coastal soils of arid and semi-arid environments. Br is used in the chemical industry to manufacture pesticides, flame retardants, pharmaceuticals, and other products. Anthropogenic sources of organobromine contaminants in the environment are primarily wastewater treatment, fumigants, and flame retardants. When aqueous Br- reacts with oxidants in water treatment plants, it can generate brominated disinfection by-products (DBPs), and exposure to DBPs is linked to adverse human health effects including increased cancer risk. Br- can be removed from aquatic systems using adsorbents, and amelioration of soils containing excess Br- can be achieved by leaching, adding various amendments, or phytoremediation. Developing cost-effective methods for Br- removal from wastewater would help address the problem of toxic brominated DBPs. Other anthropogenic organobromines, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants, are persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative, posing a challenge in environmental remediation. Future research directives for managing Br pollution sustainably in various environmental settings are suggested here.

Factors influencing the fate of chemical food safety hazards in the terrestrial circular primary food production system-A comprehensive review

Food safety is recognized as a major hurdle in the transition toward circular food production systems due to the potential reintroduction and accumulation of chemical contaminants in these food systems. Effectively managing these hazardous contaminants in a risk-based manner requires quantitative insights into the factors influencing the presence and fate of contaminants in the entire circular food chain. A systematic literature review was performed to gain an up-to-date overview of the known factors and their influence on the transfer and accumulation of contaminants. This review focused on the terrestrial circular primary food production system, including the pathways between waste- or byproduct-based fertilizers, soil, crops, animal feed, and farmed animals. This review revealed an imbalance in research regarding the different pathways: studies on the soil-to-crop pathway were most abundant. The factors identified can be categorized as compound-related (intrinsic) factors, such as hydrophobicity, molecular weight, and chain length, and extrinsic factors, such as soil organic matter and carbon, pH, milk yield of cows, crop age, and biomass. Quantitative data on the influence of the identified factors were limited. Most studies quantified the influence of individual factors, whereas only a few studies quantified the combined effect of multiple factors. By providing a holistic insight into the influential factors and the quantification of their influence on the fate of contaminants, this review contributes to the improvement of food safety management for chemical hazards when transitioning to a circular food system.

Uptake, accumulation and toxicity of short chain chlorinated paraffins to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are ubiquitous persistent organic pollutants. They have been widely detected in plant-based foods and might cause adverse impacts on humans. Nevertheless, uptake and accumulation mechanisms of SCCPs in plants remain unclear. In this study, the soil culture data indicated that SCCPs were strongly absorbed by roots (root concentration factor, RCF>1) yet limited translocated to shoots (translocation factor<1). The uptake mechanism was explored by hydroponic exposure, showing that hydrophobicity and molecular size influenced the root uptake and translocation of SCCPs. RCFs were significantly correlated with logKow values and molecular weights in a parabolic curve relationship. Besides, it was extremely difficult for SCCPs to translocate from shoots back to roots via phloem. An active energy-dependent process was proposed to be involved in the root uptake of SCCPs, which was supported by the uptake inhibition by the low temperature and metabolic inhibitor. Though SCCPs at environmentally relevant concentrations had no negative impacts on root morphology and chlorophyll contents, it caused obvious changes in cellular ultrastructure of root tip cells and induced a significant increase in superoxide dismutase activity. This information may be beneficial to moderate crop contamination by SCCPs, and to remedy soils polluted by SCCPs with plants.

A critical review on BDE-209: Source, distribution, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation

As the most widely used polybrominated diphenyl ether, BDE-209 is commonly used in polymer-based commercial and household products. Due to its unique physicochemical properties, BDE-209 is ubiquitous in a variety of environmental compartments and can be exposed to organisms in various ways and cause toxic effects. The present review outlines the current state of knowledge on the occurrence of BDE-209 in the environment, influencing factors, toxicity, and degradation. BDE-209 has been detected in various environmental matrices including air, soil, water, and sediment. Additionally, environmental factors such as organic matter, total suspended particulate, hydrodynamic, wind, and temperature affecting BDE-209 are specifically discussed. Toxicity studies suggest BDE-209 may cause systemic toxic effects on living organisms, reproductive toxicity, embryo-fetal toxicity, genetic toxicity, endocrine toxicity, neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, or even be carcinogenic. BDE-209 has toxic effects on organisms mainly through epigenetic regulation and induction of oxidative stress. Evidence regarding the degradation of BDE-209, including biodegradation, photodegradation, Fenton degradation, zero-valent iron degradation, chemical oxidative degradation, and microwave radiation degradation is summarized. This review may contribute to assessing the environmental risks of BDE-209 to help develop rational management plans.

Uptake, translocation, bioaccumulation, and bioavailability of organophosphate esters in rice paddy and maize fields

Rice and maize are two main crops with different growth habits in Northeast China. To investigate the uptake, translocation, and accumulation of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in those two crops, we measured the OPE concentrations in their agricultural soil-crop systems during different growing seasons. OPE concentrations were higher in paddy (221 ± 62.0 ng/g) than in maize (149 ± 31.6 ng/g) soil, with higher OPE levels in the rhizosphere than in bulk soil for rice, and the opposite in maize. Two-step extractions were used to obtain the labile and stable adsorption components of OPEs. The stable-adsorbed OPEs were activated to be more bioavailable by root exudates as rice grew. OPEs in rice increased linearly with the growing period. The uptake and translocation processes of OPEs by crops were not well-explained by logK_ow alone, indicating other processes such as growth dilution are significant for understanding OPE levels in plant. The translocation factors of OPEs from nutritive to reproductive organs indicated that OPEs in rice seeds may follow the translocation from root to leaf and then transfer to grains. Two genera, Sphingomonas and Geobacter, associated with degradation of organophosphorus compounds were enriched in rhizosphere soils, indicating enhanced OPE degradation.

Chemicals/materials of emerging concern in farmlands: sources, crop uptake and potential human health risks

Certain chemicals/materials that are contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been widely detected in water bodies and terrestrial systems worldwide while other CECs occur at undetectable concentrations. The primary sources of CECs in farmlands are agricultural inputs, such as wastewater, biosolids, sewage sludge, and agricultural mulching films. The percent increase in cropland area during 1950-2016 was 30 and the rise in land use for food crops during 1960-2018 was 100-500%, implying that there could be a significant CEC burden in farmlands in the future. In fact, the alarming concentrations (μg kg^-1) of certain CECs such as PBDEs, PAEs, and PFOS that occur in farmlands are 383, 35 400 and 483, respectively. Also, metal nanoparticles are reported even at the mg kg^-1 level. Chronic root accumulation followed by translocation of CECs into plants results in their detectable concentrations in the final plant produce. Thus, there is a continuous flow of CECs from farmlands to agricultural produce, causing a serious threat to the terrestrial food chain. Consequently, CECs find their way to the human body directly through CEC-laden plant produce or indirectly via the meat of grazing animals. Thus, human health could be at the most critical risk since several CECs have been shown to cause cancers, disruption of endocrine and cognitive systems, maternal-foetal transfer, neurotoxicity, and genotoxicity. Overall, this comprehensive review provides updated information on contamination of chemicals/materials of concern in farmlands globally, sources for their entry, uptake by crop plants, and their likely impact on the terrestrial food chain and human health.

OPFRs in e-waste sites: Integrating in silico approaches, selective bioremediation, and health risk management of residents surrounding

A multilevel index system of organophosphate flame retardant bioremediation effect in an e-waste handling area was established under three bioremediation scenarios (scenario I, plant absorption; scenario II, plant-microbial combined remediation; scenario III, microbial degradation). Directional modification of OPFR substitutes with high selective bioremediation was performed. The virtual amino acid mutation approach was utilised to generate high-efficiency selective absorption/degradation mutant proteins (MPs) in a plant-microbial system under varying conditions. In scenario III, the MP's microbial degrading ability to replace molecules was increased to the greatest degree (165.82%). Appropriate foods such as corn, pig liver, and yam should be consumed, whereas the simultaneous consumption of high protein foods such as pig liver and walnut should be avoided; sweet potato and yam are believed to be prevent OPFRs and substitute molecules from entering the human body through multiple pathways for reduced genotoxicity of OPFRs in the populations of e-waste handling areas (the reduction degree can reach 85.12%). The study provides a theoretical basis for the development of ecologically acceptable OPFR substitutes and innovative high-efficiency bioremediation MPs, as well as for the reduction of the joint toxicity risk of multiple ingestion route exposure/gene damage of OPFRs in high OPFR exposure sites.

Maize plant (Zea mays) uptake of organophosphorus and novel brominated flame retardants from hydroponic cultures

The root uptake and root-shoot translocation of seven organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and four novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were assessed in this investigation using hydroponic grown maize plants (Zea mays). Three initial liquid concentrations for each considered compound were examined (i.e., 0.3 μg L^-1, 3 μg L^-1, 30 μg L^-1). The results indicated that the 30 μg L^-1 treatments were phytotoxic, as they resulted in a significant decrease in shoot dry weight. Plant-driven removal of the tested FRs decreased with the increasing initial spiking level and were reportedly higher for the NBFRs (range 42%-10%) than OPFRs (range 19%-7%). All the considered FRs were measured in the roots (range 0.020-6.123 μg g^-1 dry weight -DW-) and shoots (range 0.012-1.364 μg g^-1 DW) of the tested plants, confirming that there was uptake. Linear relationships were identified between the chemical concentrations in the plant parts and the tested hydroponic concentrations. Root concentration factors were positively correlated with the specific lipophilicity (i.e., logK_ow) of the tested FRs and were determined to be higher for the NBFRs than the OPFRs. The NBFRs had a higher root uptake rate than the OPFRs, and this trend was more significant with the increasing treatment concentrations. Shoot/root concentration factors were found to be lower than the unity value for 10 of the 11 tested compounds. These results can be related to the specific molecular configurations and the occurrence of different functional groups in the tested compounds. The results will help to improve risk assessment procedures and fine tune our understanding of human receptor responses to the ingestion of maize crops grown on agricultural sites irrigated with water contaminated by FRs.

Plant accumulation and transformation of brominated and organophosphate flame retardants: A review

Plants can take up and transform brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) from soil, water and the atmosphere, which is of considerable significance to the geochemical cycle of BFRs and OPFRs and their human exposure. However, the current understanding of the plant uptake, translocation, accumulation, and metabolism of BFRs and OPFRs in the environment remains very limited. In this review, recent studies on the accumulation and transformation of BFRs and OPFRs in plants are summarized, the main factors affecting plant accumulation from the aspects of root uptake, foliar uptake, and plant translocation are presented, and the metabolites and metabolic pathways of BFRs and OPFRs in plants are analyzed. It was found that BFRs and OPFRs can be taken up by plants through partitioning to root lipids, as well as through gaseous and particle-bound deposition to the leaves. Their microscopic distribution in roots and leaves is important for understanding their accumulation behaviors. BFRs and OPFRs can be translocated in the xylem and phloem, but the specific transport pathways and mechanisms need to be further studied. BFRs and OPFRs can undergo phase I and phase II metabolism in plants. The identification, quantification and environmental fate of their metabolites will affect the assessment of their ecological and human exposure risks. Based on the issues mentioned above, some key directions worth studying in the future are proposed.

Earthworm casts restrained the accumulation and phytotoxicity of soil glyphosate to cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) plants

The heavy use of glyphosate during the cultivation of glyphosate-resistant crops, would trigger the so called "pseudo-persistent" glyphosate in soil, thereby threatening agricultural environment, crop production, and human health through food safety. Such that, there is pressing need for the development of strategies for the effective management of glyphosate contamination in soil to promote cleaner agricultural production. In this study, as witnessed via characterizing the bioavailability and phytotoxicity of glyphosate to cowpea plants in soils applied with or without earthworm casts (EWCs), EWCs could significantly facilitate glyphosate desorption from soil, thus enhance its bioaccessibility, nonetheless, sharply decreased rather than increased the accumulation of glyphosate in cowpea plants via reducing the residue pool of glyphosate in the soil. Consequently, in comparison with the glyphosate-alone group, EWCs involvement triggered the increase of chlorophyll content, alleviation of ROS accumulation and lipid peroxidation of membrane, and in turn reduced the activity of a series of stress-tolerance enzymes by means of down-regulating the expression of the corresponding mRNA; ultimately, helped plants to reverse the glyphosate-induced growth suppression. Our findings demonstrated that, EWCs were promising candidate for the cost-effective and easy-to-operate remediation and reuse of glyphosate-contaminated soil, while also being able to improve the quality of the cultivated land and promote crop growth and resistance as a nutrients supplier.

The response of soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans on the sewage sludge-derived micropollutants

Sewage sludge application to soil is of great interest, due to required organic matter and the wide spectra of nutrients it provides. However, the presence of unpredictable content of emerging contaminants may turn this valuable raw material into a hazardous substance. In this study, three selected sewage sludges derived micropollutants from different origins; that is, one each under persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) were considered. The effect of each micropollutant on the feeding activity of free-living soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was analysed. The analysis was performed in model soil solution using a larval feeding inhibition assay. The results showed no significant effects from selected POP-2,2',4,4',5-pentabromodiphenyl either and pharmaceutical-chlortetracycline on the feeding activity of tested nematodes. On the contrary, feeding activity was inhibited by PPCP-galaxolide (HHCB) with an effective concentration of 12.2 ± 2.2 mg.l-1. The calculated risk quotient for galaxolide (RQ = 0.14) demonstrated a medium ecological risk to the nematodes. Based on our findings, concentrations of micropollutants in sewage sludge treated soil pose negligible risk to feeding activity of soil nematode. However, the potential impact of musk compounds on free-living soil biota requires detailed evaluation in further research.

Do pyrene and Kandelia obovata improve removal of BDE-209 in mangrove soils?

Combined pollution caused by polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in mangrove wetlands is serious, with their remediation to be been paid more and more attention. However, little is known about the combined impact of PAHs and mangrove species on removal of PBDEs in contaminated soils. In this study, BDE-209 and pyrene were selected and a 9 months experiment was conducted to explore how BDE-209 removal in contaminated soil varied with pyrene addition and Kandelia obovata planting, and to clarify corresponding microbial responses. Results showed that BDE-209 removals in soil induced by pyrene addition or K. obovata planting were significant and stable after 6 months, with the lowest levels of BDE-209 in combined pyrene addition with K. obovata planting. Unexpected, root uptake of BDE-209 in K. obovata was limited for BDE-209 removal in soil, which was verified by lower total amount of BDE-209 bioaccumulated in K. obovata's root. In soil without K. obovata planting, BDE-209 removal caused by pyrene addition coexisted with changed bacterial abundance at phylum Planctomycetes and Chloroflexi, class Planctomycetacia, and genus Blastopirellula. K. obovata-induced removal of BDE-209 in soil may be related to bacterial enrichment in phylum Proteobacteria, class Gammaproteobacteria and genus Ilumatobacter, Gaiella. Thus, in BDE-209 contaminated soil, microbial community responses induced by pyrene addition and K. obovata planting were different at phylum, class and genus levels. This is the first study demonstrating that pyrene addition and K. obovata planting could improve BDE-209 removal, and differently affected the corresponding responses of microbial communities.

Delineation of 3D dose-time-toxicity in human pulmonary epithelial Beas-2B cells induced by decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209)

Due to frequent detection in environment as well as in the human body, the adverse effects of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) have been extensively studied in the past few years. However, information regarding the inhalation toxicity of BDE209 to humans is currently limited. In this study, the cytotoxicity, cell damage, and inflammation markers including IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α in the Beas-2B cell line induced by BDE209 were measured using a central composite design. Results showed that as BDE209 concentrations (5-65 μg mL^-1) and exposure time (6-30 h) were increased, cell viability sharply decreased from 99.7% to 29.7% and LDH activity increased from 0.1% to 13.1%. Furthermore, expression of IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α transcripts were enhanced from 4.7 to 29.1 fold, 3.4-68.9 fold, and 2.8-47.0 fold, respectively, and the concentration of IL-6 and IL-8 proteins increased from 5.4 to 16.7 pg mL^-1 and 71.0-550.0 pg mL^-1, respectively. Results indicate that BDE209 exposure can inhibit cell viability, increase LDH leakage, and upregulate the transcript (mRNA) and protein levels of inflammatory markers of IL-6 and IL-8 in Beas-2B cells. Moreover, these effects were both dose- and time-dependent, and dose and time had a synergistic effect - enhancing toxicity when in combination. Cell density affected both LDH activity and IL-8 release but had little effect on cell activity and IL-6 release in the Beas-2B cells. In contrast, TNF-α protein was not detected but its mRNA expression level was upregulated. This study will provide a reference for human health risk assessment, especially for the toxic damage that BDE209 exposure can elicit in the respiratory tract.

Plant uptake and translocation of contaminants of emerging concern in soil

The advent of industrialization has led to the discovery of a wide range of chemicals designed for multiple uses including plant protection. However, after use, most of the chemicals and their derivatives end up in soil and water, interacting with living organisms. Plants, which are primary producers, are intentionally or unintentionally exposed to several chemicals, serving as a vehicle for the transfer of products into the food chain. Although the exposure of pesticides towards plants has been witnessed over a long time in agricultural production, other chemicals have attracted attention very recently. In this review, we carried out a comprehensive overview of the plant uptake capacity of various contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) in soil, such as pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceutical and personal care products, and engineered nanomaterials. The uptake pathways and overall impacts of these chemicals are highlighted. According to the literature, bioaccumulation of CEC in the root part is higher than in aerial parts. Furthermore, various factors such as plant species, pollutant type, and microbial interactions influence the overall uptake. Lastly, environmental factors such as soil erosion and temperature can also affect the CEC bioavailability towards plants.

Applying β-cyclodextrin to amaranth inoculated with white-rot fungus for more efficient remediation of soil co-contaminated with Cd and BDE-209

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of a series of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) concentrations on bioremediation of soil co-contaminated with Cd and BDE-209 using amaranth and the white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium, with BDE-209 degrading ability. Results showed that the white-rot fungus was beneficial to the growth of amaranth, Cd uptake and BDE-209 degradation. Addition of β-CD further increased biomass of both shoots and roots, shoot Cd concentrations and contents, chlorophyll concentrations and soil manganese peroxidase (MnP) activities. Furthermore, well-organized mesophyll cells were observed in β-CD treatments, implying that the combination of white-rot fungus and β-CD can alleviate the stresses of Cd and BDE-209 to mesophyll cells. The BDE-209 degradation rate was positively correlated to β-CD concentration and MnP activity in soil. Our results also revealed that RF+β_0.8 treatment possessed the greatest Cd removal efficiency due to its well-configured mesophyll cells and the highest shoot biomass, chlorophyll concentration, and shoot Cd concentration. Considering simultaneous removal of Cd and BDE-209 from soil, using 0.8% β-CD to amaranth inoculated with white-rot fungus is a promising way forward for the phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with Cd and BDE-209. A high percentage of mono-BDE was detected in inoculated amaranth, suggesting that BDE-209 was debrominated into low brominated PBDEs by the fungus in soil, which were then absorbed and further debrominated into mono-BDE in the plant.

Soil contamination and sources of phthalates and its health risk in China: A review

Phthalates (PAEs) are extensively used as plasticizers and constitute one of the most frequently detected organic contaminants in the environment. With the deterioration of eco-environment in China during the past three decades, many studies on PAE occurrence in soils and their risk assessments have been conducted which allow us to carry out a fairly comprehensive assessment of soil PAE contamination on a nation-wide scale. This review combines the updated information available associated with PAE current levels, distribution patterns (including urban soil, rural or agricultural soil, seasonal and vertical variations), potential sources, and human health exposure. The levels of PAEs in soils of China are generally at the high end of the global range, and higher than the grade II limits of the Environmental Quality Standard for soil in China. The most abundant compounds, di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), display obvious spatial distribution in different provinces. It is noted that urbanization and industrialization, application of plastic film (especially plastic film mulching in agricultural soil) and fertilizer are the major sources of PAEs in soil. Uptake of PAEs by crops, and human exposure to PAEs via ingestion of soil and vegetables are reviewed, with scientific gaps highlighted.

Phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with Cd and BDE-209 using hyperaccumulator enhanced by AM fungi and surfactant

Pot experiments were conducted to investigate the uptake and translocation of both Cd and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) in Solanum nigrum, under the treatments of two arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi [AMF, Funneliformis mosseae (FM) and Rhizophagus intraradices (RI)] and surfactant β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Results showed that S. nigrum treated with either FM or β-CD significantly elevated shoot biomass and Cd concentrations and contents in shoots. The concentrations of BDE-209 in shoots and the dissipation and debromination efficiencies of BDE-209 in soil were significantly enhanced in S. nigrum treated with β-CD, inoculated with or without AMF. Moreover, significant positive correlations were found between the BDE-209 dissipation efficiency, the BDE-209 concentrations and contents in roots, and the soil enzymatic activities (polyphenol oxidase or dehydrogenase activities) and between the Cd and BDE-209 contents in shoots or roots. Higher concentrations of lower-brominated products and total PBDEs were detected in shoots than in roots suggesting that BDE-209 might be initially absorbed by roots, then translocated to shoots, and then degraded into lower brominated products in shoots. Considering the plant uptake of Cd and BDE-209 and the efficient removal of those chemicals in soils, the combination of S. nigrum and β-CD inoculated with or without AMF may be viable alternatives for phytoremediation of the co-contaminated soil.

Critical review of soil contamination by polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs); concentrations, sources and congener profiles

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used in a broad array of polymeric materials such as plastics, foams, resins and adhesives to inhibit the spread of fires since the 1970s. The widespread environmental contamination and well documented toxic effects of PBDEs have led to bans and voluntary withdrawals in many jurisdictions. Replacement novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) have, however, exhibited many of the same toxic characteristics as PBDEs and appear to share similar environmental fate. This paper presents a critical review of the scientific literature regarding PBDE and NBFR contamination of surface soils internationally, with the secondary objective of identifying probable pollution sources. An evaluation of NBFR distribution in soil was also conducted to assess the suitability of the newer compounds as replacements for PBDEs, with respect to their land contamination potential. Principle production of PBDEs and NBFRs and their consequent use in secondary polymer manufacture appear to be processes with strong potential to contaminate surrounding soils. Evidence suggests that PBDEs and NBFRs are also released from flame retarded products during disposal via landfill, dumping, incineration and recycling. While the land application of sewage sludge represents another major pathway of soil contamination it is not considered in this review as it is extensively covered elsewhere. Both PBDEs and NBFRs were commonly detected at background locations including Antarctica and northern polar regions. PBDE congener profiles in soil were broadly representative of the major constituents in Penta-, Octa- and Deca-BDE commercial mixtures and related to predicted market place demand. BDE-209 dominated soil profiles, followed by BDE-99 and BDE-47. Although further research is required to gain baseline data on NBFRs in soil, the current state of scientific literature suggests that NBFRs pose a similar risk to land contamination as PBDEs.

Effect of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate on the photolysis of 2,4,4'-tribromophenylphenyl ether

In this study, we have investigated the photolysis of 2,4,4'-tribromophenylphenyl ether (BDE-28) in Triton X-100 (TX-100) solutions, and discussed the effect of anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) on the photolysis of BDE-28. The effect of TX-100 on the photolysis of BDE-28 was mainly related to the concentration of TX-100. The fastest photolysis of BDE-28 was at 500 mg L^-1 of the TX-100 solution, and the corresponding photolysis rate constant was 0.12 min^-1. The direct photolysis rate of BDE-28 decreased from 0.17 min^-1 to 0.08 min^-1 and 0.12 min^-1 when NaN₃ and isopropanol were added, respectively. The effect of AQDS on the photolysis of BDE-28 was also mainly related to the concentration of AQDS. When the concentration of AQDS was 0.6 μM, it has a slight influence in promoting the photodegradation of BDE-28; as the AQDS concentrations increased, the suppressing effect was more obvious. AQDS can inhibit the photolysis of BDE-28. Photolysis kinetics and quenching reactions illustrated that BDE-28 can produce a photosensitization reaction in TX-100 solutions, and the effects of AQDS on the photolysis of BDE-28 were mainly dominated by inhibition. In addition to its light shielding effect, AQDS can also combine with BDE-28 and anti-oxidation to inhibit the photolysis of BDE-28. We found that the degradation pathway of BDE-28 was mainly based on de-bromination, and the ions at para positions were preferentially debrominated.

Partition uptake of a brominated diphenyl ether by the edible plant root of white radish (Raphanus sativus L.)

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are of a class of emerging contaminants. In this study, the accumulation of 4-bromodiphenyl ether (BDE-3) by different parts of a live white radish was investigated. Different cultural media (hydroponics, silica sand, and soil) were used to sustain the radish plant during its uptake and in-plant translocation of BDE-3. The results showed that BDE-3 can be translocated from the roots to the aboveground organs and the accumulated levels of BDE-3 in different parts of the white radish followed the order for the three types of cultivation: fibrous roots > peels > main roots > leaves. The results were analyzed by the aid of the partition-limited model for the plant uptake. The relevant partition coefficients (K_OC and K_d) and uptake parameters of BDE-3 with plant components (K_pt and K_lip) were obtained for analyzing the BDE-3 distribution. The partition-limited model offers a significant insight into the uptakes of BDE-3 by the various components of live white radishes. The types of cultivation affected the total sorption level, translocation factors (TFs), extent to equilibrium (α_pt), and root concentration factors (RCFs).

Uptake of perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctane sulfonamide by carrot and lettuce from compost amended soil

Sewage sludge, which acts like a sink for many pollutants, including metals, pathogens and organic pollutants, that are not completely removed in waste water treatment plants (WWTPs), is applied as a nutrient rich organic fertilizer in many agricultural applications. In the present work, carrot and lettuce crops were grown in two different compost amended soils fortified with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorosulfonate acid (PFOS) and perfluorosulfonamide (FOSA) and cultivated in a greenhouse. The plants were harvested and divided into root core, root peel and leaves in the case of carrots and into heart and leaves for lettuces. Concentrations for all the different compartments were determined to assess the bioconcentration factors (BCFs) and the plant distribution of the target analytes. The highest carrot BCFs for PFOA and PFOS were determined in the leaves (0.6-3.4), while lower values were calculated in the core (0.05-0.6) and the peel (0.05-1.9) compartments. However, PFOA was taken up in the translocation stream and accumulated more than PFOS in the edible part of lettuce. FOSA was totally degraded in the presence of carrot; however, a lower FOSA degradation was observed in presence of the lettuce, which was dependent on the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the soil. The higher the TOC value, the higher the FOSA degradation observed. No degradation was observed in the crop absence. In the case of the carrot experiments, different polymeric materials (polyethersulfone, PES, polyoxymethylene, and silicone rod) were tested to predict the concentration in the cultivation media. A high correlation (r(2)>0.63) was observed for the BCFs in the PES and in the carrot core and peel for PFOA and PFOS. It could be, concluded that the PES can be used as a first approach for the determination of the uptake of compounds such as PFOS and PFOA in carrot.

Achilles heel of environmental risk from recycling of sludge to soil as amendment: A summary in recent ten years (2007-2016)

Recycling sludge as a soil amendment has both positive and negative effects because of its enrichment in both nutrients and contaminants. So far, the negative effect has to be extensively investigated that the severities of different types of contaminants also remain unclear. The environmental behavior and risk of organic contaminant and pharmaceuticals, heavy metal and salt as well as pathogenic microorganisms brought by sludge amendment are summarized and discussed here. Organic contaminants and pharmaceuticals are typically found at low concentrations in sludge, the risks from sludge-amended soil decrease over time owing to its biodegradability. On the other hand, application of sludge generally increases soil salinity, which may cause physiological damage to plants grown in sludge-amended soil. In some extent, this negative effect can be alleviated by means of dilution; however, greater attention should be paid to long term increasing possible risk of eutrophication. Heavy metal (particularly of mobile heavy metals, such as Cd) with high concentrations in sludge and soil receiving considerable sludge can cause its incremental abundance in soil and crop contamination, further posing risks to humans, but most cases showed that there remained not excessive in heavy metal caused by sludge amendment. It is worth noting that increasing soil organic matter content may reduce transfer of heavy metal from soil to crops, but not restrict its uptake by crops at all. Combined literature together, it is summarized that heavy metal becomes a relatively severe bottleneck in recycling of sludge as soil amendment due to its non-biodegradability and potential damage to health by adventuring contamination from agricultural products. Particular attention should therefore be paid to long term monitoring the change of heavy metals concentration in sludge amended soil.

Field study on the uptake, accumulation, translocation and risk assessment of PAHs in a soil-wheat system with amendments of sewage sludge

Field experiments were conducted to explore the uptake and translocation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by wheat plants following sewage sludge application. Two types of application methods (single or annual application) and four application rates (5, 10, 20, and 40t/ha/year) were investigated. The contents of 16 PAHs in soils, wheat roots and straws increased as the rate of sewage sludge application increased and were in the range of 20.7 to 241, 166 to 700, and 110 to 260ng/g dry weight (dw), respectively. Meanwhile, for the PAH contents in grains (81.2-95.2ng/g dw), no statistically significant differences were observed among different treatments. A single application of a large quantity of sewage sludge would likely increase the accumulation of PAHs in soil as well as their subsequent uptake and translocation by wheat. Profile analysis indicated that the transfer and accumulation of lower weight PAHs in wheat plants were greater. Regarding PAHs, sewage sludge application at 40t/ha/year for 6years did not significantly increase the risks of intake by wheat grain grown on sludge-amended soils.

Organic Contaminants in Chinese Sewage Sludge: A Meta-Analysis of the Literature of the Past 30 Years

The production of sewage sludge is increasing in China but with unsafe disposal practices, causing potential risk to human health and the environment. Using literature from the past 30 years (N = 159), we conducted a meta-analysis of organic contaminants (OCs) in Chinese sludge. Most data were available from developed and populated regions, and no data were found for Tibet. Since 1987, 35 classes of chemicals consisting of 749 individual compounds and 1 mixture have been analyzed, in which antibiotics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were the most targeted analytes. For 13 classes of principal OCs (defined as chemicals detected in over five studies) in sludge, the median (expressed in nanograms per gram dry weight) was the highest for phthalate esters (27 900), followed by alkylphenol polyethoxylates (12 000), synthetic musks (5800), antibiotics (4240), PAHs (3490), ultraviolet stabilizers (670), bisphenol analogs (160), organochlorine pesticides (110), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (100), pharmaceuticals (84), hormones (69), perfluorinated compounds (21), and polychlorinated biphenyls (15). Concentrations of PAHs in sludges collected between 1998 and 2012 showed a decreasing trend. Study findings suggest the need for a Chinese national sewage sludge survey to identify and regulate toxic OCs, ideally employing both targeted as well as nontargeted screening approaches.

Uptake of 8:2 perfluoroalkyl phosphate diester and its degradation products by carrot and lettuce from compost-amended soil

The present work studied the uptake of 8:2 perfluoroalkyl phosphate diester (diPAP) by two different crops (lettuce and carrot) and two different amended soils. Firstly, the possible degradation of 8:2 diPAP in the absence of crop was studied and 8:2 monoPAP (monophosphate), 8:2 FTCA (saturated fluorotelomer carboxylate), 8:2 FTUCA (unsaturated fluorotelomer carboxylate), 7:3 FTCA (saturated fluorotelomer carboxylate), PFHpA (perfluoroheptanoic acid), PFHxA (perfluorohexanoic acid) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) were detected. In the presence of crops, different degradation products were detected in the soil and, while PFNA (perfluorononanoic acid), PFHpA, PFHxA, PFPeA (perfluoropentacoic acid), PFBA (perfluorobutanoic acid), 7:3 FTCA and PFOA were determined in the cultivation media when carrot was grown, PFOA was the only degradation product detected in the case of lettuce experiments. Regarding the uptake in carrot, all the degradation products except 7:3 FTCA were translocated from the soil to the carrot. Carrot core, peel and leaves bioconcentration factors, BCFs, were determined for 8:2 diPAP and its degradation products. Values lower than method detection limits for core and low BCFs in peel (0.025-0.042) and leaves (0.028-0.049) were achieved for 8:2 diPAP. Regarding to the degradation products, the higher their water solubility, the higher the plant translocation. In this sense, the lower the carbon chain length of PFCAs, the higher the BCFs determined (PFBA > PFHxA > PFHpA > PFOA > PFNA). In general, lower total BCFs were achieved when the total organic carbon of the soils increased. For lettuce experiments, 8:2 diPAP (0.04-0.18) and PFOA (0.28-1.57) were only determined in lettuce heart.

Effects of two different organic amendments addition to soil on sorption-desorption, leaching, bioavailability of penconazole and the growth of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

This study investigated the effects of sugarcane bagasse compost (SBC) and chicken manure compost (CMC) on the sorption-desorption, leaching and bioavailability of the fungicide penconazole in soil in a laboratory setting. The autoclave-treated SBC or CMC was applied at 2.5% and 5.0% (w/w). Results of batch equilibrium experiments exhibited that the sorption capacity of soils for penconazole was significantly promoted by the addition of SBC or CMC, whereas desorption of penconazole was drastically reduced; the influence was enhanced as the amount of organic amendments increased. Results of column leaching experiment indicated that the addition of SBC or CMC significantly limited the vertical movement of penconazole through the soil columns, considerably decreasing the content of penconazole in the soil leachate. Furthermore, results of bioavailability experiments demonstrated that the addition of organic amendments (SBC or CMC) remarkably influenced the uptake and translocation of penconazole, decreased penconazole accumulation in the plant tissues and increased the plant elongation and biomass. These data revealed important changes in pesticide behavior under SBC or CMC application, which should be useful for developing strategies to protect groundwater and crops from contamination from the residual pesticides in soil.

Characterization of the exchange of PBDEs in a subtropical paddy field of China: A significant inputs of PBDEs via air-foliage exchange

Rice and the distinctive cultivation practices employed in rice growth can significantly influence the environmental fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in a paddy field. We studied variations in PBDE concentrations in multiple compartments of a paddy field in the suburban area of Guangzhou, South China, including air, soil, water, and rice tissues. The input/output fluxes of air-surface and air-foliage exchange, atmospheric deposition and water input during different rice growth stages were measured simultaneously. Air-foliage and air-water diffusion exchanges were the key processes controlling inputs and outputs of PBDEs in paddy fields, respectively, whereas atmospheric deposition dominated inputs of higher brominated PBDEs. The high input of PBDEs via air-foliage exchange suggested that vegetation can significantly increase the air-to-field transport of PBDEs in ecosystems. The annual input of PBDEs in all paddy fields in Guangdong Province was estimated to be 22.1 kg.
