A nuclear magnetic resonance study of the dynamics of organofluorine interactions with a dissolved humic acid

Binding Between Antibiotics and Polystyrene Nanoparticles Examined by NMR

Elucidating the interactions between plastic nanoparticles and small molecules is important to understanding these interactions as they occur in polluted waterways. For example, plastic that breaks down into micro- and nanoscale particles will interact with small molecule pollutants that are also present in contaminated waters. Other components of natural water, such as dissolved organic matter, will also influence these interactions. Here we use a collection of complementary NMR techniques to examine the binding between polystyrene nanoparticles and three common antibiotics, belonging to a class of molecules that are expected to be common in polluted water. Through examination of proton NMR signal intensity, relaxation times, saturation-transfer difference (STD) NMR, and competition STD-NMR, we find that the antibiotics have binding strengths in the order amoxicillin < metronidazole ≪ levofloxacin. Levofloxacin is able to compete for binding sites, preventing the other two antibiotics from binding. The presence of tannic acid disrupts the binding between levofloxacin and the polystyrene nanoparticles, but does not influence the binding between metronidazole and these nanoparticles.

Characterization of humic acids from original coal and its oxidization production

Five coal samples obtained from Chinese coal-producing areas were oxidized by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and humic acids (HAs) were derived from original coal and its oxidizition samples. HAs were characterized by physical and chemical methods, between which was also comparison. Yield, ash, aromaticity, molecular weight and functional group of HAs showed variance between original coals. While, yield, molecular weight, and the quantity of oxygen-containing groups of HAs increased more from coals oxidized with H₂O₂. However, the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups depended on original coals. For Yimin lignite, the oxidation of H₂O₂ could obviously improve the carboxyl group content of HAs, thus promoting the adsorption of nitrogen. This study demonstrated that oxidation of coal by using H₂O₂ was one pretreatment way to obtain and modify HAs which could be used as prerequisite and functional material in agricultural field.

Solution-state NMR evaluation of molecular interaction between monoaromatic carboxylic acids and dissolved humic acid

Understanding the nature of interactions between the aromatic organic pollutants with dissolved humic acid (HA) is fundamental for the prediction of their environmental fate and subsequent development of efficient remediation methods. The present study employs solution-state ¹H/¹⁹F NMR methods to investigate the non-covalent interaction between aqueous peat humic acid (Aldrich HA) and monoaromatic carboxylic acids (CA), viz., 2, 6 diflourobenzoic acid (DFBA) and its non-fluorinated analog, benzoic acid (BA). NMR self-diffusion measurement of HA protons confirmed micellar nature indicating possibility of encapsulation of small molecules through host-guest interaction. ¹⁹F-¹H and ¹H-¹H saturation transfer difference (STD) experiments reveal the mode of insertion of CA into HA superstructure. The strength of interaction has been evaluated by analyzing T₁/T₂ relaxation times and self-diffusion coefficients of CA as a function of HA concentration. Association constants extracted for CA-HA complexes from NMR diffusion experiments reflected that the association between DFBA-HA (2.34 mM^-1) is significantly higher than that of BA-HA (0.97 mM^-1). The experimental outcome reiterated that substitution of -H with halogen atoms (-F in specific) to aromatic ring plays a dominant role in modulating the strength of association and mode of insertion of organic pollutants into HA superstructure. The present study emphasizes that AHA can be a potential remediating agent for organic contaminants due to its superior binding affinity compared to less humified extracted HA (EHA) from Karwar, Rajasthan, India.

An analysis of the versatility and effectiveness of composts for sequestering heavy metal ions, dyes and xenobiotics from soils and aqueous milieus

The persistence and bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants in water bodies, soils and living tissues remain alarmingly related to environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. Adsorption-based techniques appear highly competent in sequestering several environmental pollutants. In this review, the recent research findings reported on the assessments of composts and compost-amended soils as adsorbents of heavy metal ions, dye molecules and xenobiotics have been appraised. This review demonstrates clearly the high adsorption capacities of composts for umpteen environmental pollutants at the lab-scale. The main inferences from this review are that utilization of composts for the removal of heavy metal ions, dye molecules and xenobiotics from aqueous environments and soils is particularly worthwhile and efficient at the laboratory scale, and the adsorption behaviors and effectiveness of compost-type adsorbents for agrochemicals (e.g. herbicides and insecticides) vary considerably because of variabilities in structure, topology, bond connectivity, distribution of functional groups and interactions of xenobiotics with the active humic substances in composts. Compost-based field-scale remediation of environmental pollutants is still sparse and arguably much challenging to implement if, furthermore, real-world soil and water contamination issues are to be addressed effectively. Hence, significant research and process development efforts should be promptly geared and intensified in this direction by extrapolating the lab-scale findings in a cost-effective manner.

An efficient headspace gas chromatographic technique for determining humic acid content in fertilizer

A fast, convenient and commercially available approach for analyzing humic acid content in fertilizer using headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) is presented in this paper. Humic acid is converted into carbon dioxide based on the oxidation of humic acid in strong acidic medium and can be measured via automatic HS-GC. Conditions for the alkaline extraction and the humic acid oxidation process are also optimized. The new technique proved to be precise (RSD ≤ 3.59%) and accurate (relative errors≤9.46% as compared with the spectrophotometric approach). The newly established technique presents a practical tool to routinely analyze humic acid content in fertilizer during the fertilizer production.

A Fluorescence Quenching Analysis of the Binding of Fluoroquinolones to Humic Acid

Fluorescence quenching was used to investigate the interaction of six fluoroquinolones with humic acid. Static quenching was observed for the binding of ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, fleroxacin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, and ofloxacin to humic acid. The equilibrium binding constants were found from Stern-Volmer plots of the data. The quenching experiments were repeated over a temperature range of 25-45 ℃ and van't Hoff plots were generated. From these linear plots, thermodynamic values were calculated for Δ H, Δ G, and Δ S for each of the fluoroquinolones. The equilibrium binding constants were found to be <1 for all the antibiotics studied. The calculated ΔH values were all negative and ranged from -9.5 to -27.6 kJ/mol. The high water solubility of the antibiotics and low ΔH of binding suggests that the antibiotics will be transported easily through the environment. Finally, whether the fluoroquinolones are in a protonated, deprotonated, or partially protonated state is found to correlate to the strength of binding to humic acid.

Characterization of pH-fractionated humic acids derived from Chinese weathered coal

To reduce the compositional and structural heterogeneity of humic acids (HAs) and achieve better use of HA resources, in this study, we report a new sequential dissolution method for HAs derived from Chinese weathered coal. This method was used to separate HAs into seven fractions by adjusting the pH (3-10) of the extraction solution. The results showed that the HA fractions derived from Chinese weathered coal were concentrated up to 90.31% in the lower pH solutions (3-7). The compositional and structural characteristics of the HA fractions were determined by elemental analysis; ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and solid-state ¹³C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies; and other techniques. The results showed significant differences among the HA fractions. The concentrations of the total acidic groups and the carboxyl groups decreased with the increasing pH of the extraction solution. However, the HA fractions derived from extraction solutions with pH 3-4 had relatively lower aromaticity but a higher protonated carbon content. The HA fractions derived from extraction solutions with pH 6-7 had the highest aromaticity and the greatest abundance of COO/N-C=O. This study demonstrated that adjusting the pH of the extraction solution is one way to fractionate HAs from Chinese weathered coal and to obtain HA fractions with compositions and structures that could serve as useful material for study and utilization.
