Membranes in Water Reclamation: Treatment, Reuse and Concentrate Management

In this article, an extensive examination is provided on the possible uses of membranes and hybrid processes in wastewater treatment. While membrane technologies face certain constraints, such as membrane fouling and scaling, the incomplete elimination of emerging contaminants, elevated expenses, energy usage, and brine disposal, there are approaches that can address these challenges. Methods such as pretreating the feed water, utilizing hybrid membrane systems and hybrid dual-membrane systems, and employing other innovative membrane-based treatment techniques can enhance the efficacy of membrane processes and advance sustainability.

Visible light-driven photoelectrocatalysis for simultaneous removal of oxytetracycline and Cu (II) based on plasmonic Bi/Bi2O3/TiO2 nanotubes

A visible light-driven photoelectrocatalytic system was constructed based on Bi/Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ nanotubes (NTs) to treat wastewater containing oxytetracycline and Cu²⁺ mixed pollutants. The surface morphology, crystal phase, elemental composition, light absorption property and photoelectrochemical activity of the synthesized Bi/Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ NTs were investigated. The composite film, Bi/Bi₂O₃/TiO₂ NTs was used for the photoelectrochemical removal of oxytetracycline, and it had excellent visible light photoelectrocatalytic performance. Under optimal conditions, the composite film was simultaneously used to remove coexisting oxytetracycline-Cu²⁺. The study results show that the reduction of Cu²⁺ on cathode was promoted by oxytetracycline while the degradation of oxytetracycline on photoanode was slightly suppressed by Cu²⁺. Also, possible photoelectrocatalytic degradation pathways for oxytetracycline-Cu²⁺ were analyzed by HPLC-MS.

Multiple adsorption systems and electron-scale insights into the high efficiency coadsorption of a novel assembled cellulose via experiments and DFT calculations

In view of the characteristics of heavy metal and antibiotic compound pollution in the Pearl River Basin in Guangzhou. More scientifically modified cellulose, named HVUC, is characterized by multiple hydrophilic groups, long chains and large space and displays highly efficient adsorption of both Cd and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and good adaptability in a wide pH range and at high ion strength. Furthermore, the coadsorption mechanism was elaborated from multiple angles. Multiple adsorption experiments explained the competition and synergy effect in the adsorption process. The electrostatic potential maps indicated that HVUC had advantageous adsorption sites for both Cd and SMZ and that electrostatic interactions had the greatest impact on the adsorption of Cd and SMZ. The electron density and differential charge density images proved that Cd more easily overlapped electron clouds and transferred electrons with HVUC and that SMZ^- and could act as a bridge for SMZ^-. The equilibrium configuration indicated that the formation of Cd-SMZ^- complexes led to the bending and folding of SMZ^-, which was not conducive to overall adsorption when SMZ^- was close to HVUC and could lead to the release of SMZ^- when Cd was close to HVUC, which confirmed the proposed mechanism of complexation-decomplexation-complexation.

Pollution characteristics and source identification of soil metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic-containing mine, China

Mining activities can result in serious contamination of soil by heavy metal(loid)s. In this study, the sources and spatial distribution of metal(loid)s, and the risks to public health from these metal(loid)s at an abandoned arsenic mine site were explored. The mean concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), antimony (Sb), strontium (Sr), and thallium (Tl) in the soil in the mining area were higher than the mean background values. The main pollutants from the mining activities were As, Hg, and Sb. Five pollutant sources were identified using an approach that combined statistical methods, a positive matrix factorization model, and historical information analysis. As, Hg, Sb, and Tl were associated with the mining resources and related activities (37.29%); Mn (15.57%) and Sr (15.96%) were mainly from crustal origin and pedogenesis, respectively; Pb, Sb, and Tl were mainly from industrial sources (17.57%), and Cd was mainly from the production and application of phosphorous fertilizer (13.60%). Using incremental spatial autocorrelation crystallized that As, Hg, and Sb were mainly contained within 500 m of their source. There were formed existing non-carcinogenic hazards and carcinogenic risks from As, and potential carcinogenic risks from Cd, in the soil for those living locally.

Polar modified dendritic post-cross-linked polymer for Cu2+ adsorption

The polar modified dendritic post-cross-linked polymer, namely HCPD was synthesized and used for adsorptive removal of Cu²⁺ from aqueous solution. The results showed that 5.12 mmol/g of amino and 2.25 mmol/g of carbonyl groups were uploaded on the polymer and these groups were significantly beneficial for Cu²⁺ removal. The maximum capacity reached 157.8 mg/g at 313 K and increased as the temperature increased. The Langmuir model characterized the equilibrium data well and a chemical interaction was involved with the enthalpy change of 49.50 kJ/mol. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the kinetic data well and the intra-particle diffusion model was appropriate for characterizing the kinetic adsorption. HCPD could be easily regenerated and the regenerated polymers were effectively recycled for five times without significant loss of the equilibrium capacity. Moreover, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed that the chelating coordination of the amino and carbonyl groups with Cu²⁺ was the main driving force for the adsorption.

Magnetic mesoporous silica/ε-polylysine nanomotor-based removers of blood Pb2

The removal of excessive blood lead ions (Pb2+) is very important to human health, but current effective removal technology is still lacking because of the complex existence state of Pb2+ in blood, which can be attributed to the fact that most of the blood Pb2+ is combined with haemoglobin (Hb) located in red blood cells (RBCs). Here, a new type of magnetic mesoporous silica/ε-polylysine nanomotor-based remover (MMS/P NR) with abundant chelation sites was designed, synthesized and used to remove Pb2+ from blood. The magnetic core can make the nanocomposites become nanomotors with autonomous movement under an external variable magnetic field, which can effectively improve the contact probability between the MMS/P NRs and Pb2+-contaminated Hb in RBCs. The amino rich ε-polylysine (ε-PL) was used as the co-template of mesoporous silica. Mesoporous channels can provide a confinement effect for Pb2+-contaminated Hb to stabilize the captured blood Pb2+. The movement behavior of the MMS/P NRs in and out of RBCs and the capture mechanism of Pb2+ in the blood were studied. The results indicate that the MMS/P NRs we propose have good blood compatibility, low cytotoxicity, magnetic properties, autonomous movement ability and recyclability under the condition of an external magnetic field. Moreover, compared with the experimental conditions without an external variable magnetic field (0.01485 mg g-1), the MMS/P NRs show a higher blood Pb2+ removal ability under the condition of an external variable magnetic field (0.05525 mg g-1). The design strategy of this remover based on nanomotor technology has great potential in the future medical treatment of heavy metal poisoning.

New Bio-Based Furanic Materials Effectively Absorb Metals from Water and Exert Antimicrobial Activity

Development of sustainable bio-based materials for removal of toxic contaminants from water is a high priority goal. Novel bio-based binary and ternary copolymers with enhanced ion-exchange, adsorption and antibacterial properties were obtained by using plant biomass-derived diallyl esters of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) as crosslinking agents and easily available vinyl monomers. The synthesized copolymer materials showed higher sorption capacities for Ni^II , Co^II and Cu^II compared to the commercial ion-exchange resins, and they maintained their high metal adsorption capacities for over 10 cycles of regeneration. The synthesized copolymer gels containing 1-5 wt % of the crosslinker showed excellent water absorption capacities. The synthesized copolymers with 1 % crosslinker content showed swelling ratios high enough to also act as moisture absorbents. Synthesized copolymers with crosslinker content of 10 wt % performed as contact-active antibacterials by inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli, K. pneumonia) in suspension tests.

Solution pH affects single, sequential and binary systems of sulfamethoxazole and cadmium adsorption by self-assembled cellulose: Promotion or inhibition?

A new self-assembled cellulose (SACS) containing multi-functional amine, carboxyl and hydroxyl groups was successfully obtained through etherification, cross-linking and grafting processes. Then, the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and Cd(II) onto SACS at pH values of 3, 5.7 and 7.5 was systematically investigated by batch experiments of single, sequential and binary systems, characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The presence of Cd(II) decreased the adsorption of SMZ because of hydrophilic site competition, while SMZ inversely increased the adsorption of Cd(II), which was attributed to bridging and especially to electrostatic shielding effects; moreover, both the inhibitory and synergistic effects were more obvious in the binary system and at a pH of 7.5. There was a dynamic balance between the inhibitory and synergistic effects that depended on the system, pH value and concentration ratio. DFT results further indicated that SMZ^- more easily coordinated with Cd(II) at sulfonyl oxygen and nitrogen sites, and the cationic bridge of Cd(II) with SMZ^- mainly occurred in the sequential system. Moreover, a complexation-decomplexation-complexation balance of SMZ^- and Cd(II) probably occurred in the binary system.

The effect of incorporating inorganic materials into quaternized polyacrylic polymer on its mechanical strength and adsorption behaviour for ibuprofen removal

Quaternized polyacrylic polymer has many applications in water treatment because of its ion exchange effects, but its further industrial applications are largely restricted because of its poor mechanical strength. In this work, a magnetic anion exchange resin with a polyacrylic matrix (MAP) was prepared by incorporation of Fe₃O₄ and subsequent modification with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) to improve the mechanical strength and adsorption performance. The incorporation of Fe₃O₄ significantly enhanced the mechanical strength of the polymer and improved the sphericity rate after ball milling of the polyacrylic resin from 80.1% to 97.2% as a result of hydrogen bonding between the -OH groups on Fe₃O₄ and the -NH- groups on the resin matrix. Further TEOS modification could effectively prevent Fe₃O₄ particles from dislodging from the resins. The adsorption performance was evaluated by using ibuprofen as a model compound. The adsorption kinetics showed that adsorption equilibrium was reached in 150 min. XPS analysis indicated that hydrogen bonding greatly contributed to the adsorption of ibuprofen onto the MAP. Adsorption isotherm analysis indicated that the adsorption was endothermic.

Efficient co-removal of copper and tetracycline from aqueous solution by using permanent magnetic cation exchange resin

This work aimed to examine a permanent magnetic cation-exchange resin (MCER) for synergistic co-removal of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) from their mixed solutions. Batch adsorption experiments and characterizations were performed to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption of Cu(II) followed the Langmuir isotherm model in most cases, while Freundlich isotherm model was more suitable for fitting TC adsorption, which was due to the surface coordination between adsorbed Cu(II) and TC and the formation of multilayer MCER-Cu-TC complexes. The equilibrium TC adsorption amount in binary Cu/TC system was about 5.5-13.5 times of that in sole system, whereas Cu(II) uptake was nearly unchanged. Decomplexing-bridging was ascribed as the primary mechanism, which involved the [Cu-TC] decomplexing and [resin-Cu] bridging for TC uptake. Moreover, these MCER microbeads could be reused with negligible loss in adsorption capacity during five adsorption-desorption cycles, indicative of great potential in synergistic co-removal of organics-Cu complexes from aqueous solutions.

Efficient and synergistic removal of tetracycline and Cu(II) using novel magnetic multi-amine resins

A series of magnetic multi-amine resins (MMARs, named E1D9-E9D1) was proposed for the removal of tetracycline (TC) and Cu(II) in sole and binary solutions. Results showed that the N content of the resins increased sharply from 1.7% to 15.49%, and the BET surface areas decreased from 1433.4 m²/g to 8.9 m²/g with methyl acrylate ratio increasing from E1D9 to E9D1. Their adsorption capacities for TC and Cu(II) could reach 0.243 and 0.453 mmol/g, respectively. The adsorption isotherms of TC onto MMARs transformed from heterogeneous adsorption to monolayer-type adsorption with DVB monomer ratio in resin matrix decrease, suggesting the dominant physical adsorption between TC and benzene rings. TC adsorption capacity onto E9D1 was higher than that onto E7D3 when the equilibrium concentration of TC exceeded 0.043 mmol/L because the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged groups of TC and protonated amines of adsorbents could compensate for the capacity loss resulting from BET surface area decrease. In the binary system, the electrostatic interaction between negatively charged TC-Cu(II) complex and protonated amines of adsorbents was responsible for the synergistic adsorption onto E7D3 and E9D1. The XPS spectra of magnetic resins before and after adsorption were characterized to prove the probable adsorption mechanisms. This work provides alternative adsorbent for the efficient treatment of multiple pollution with different concentrations of organic micropollutants and heavy metal ions.

Preparation of Permanent Magnetic Resin Crosslinking by Diallyl Itaconate and Its Adsorptive and Anti-fouling Behaviors for Humic Acid Removal

In this research, a series of permanent magnetic anion exchange resins (MAERs) were prepared by polymerizing glycidyl methacrylate monomer and crosslinking diallyl itaconate (DAI) and divinylbenzene. The properties and performances of these novel MAERs were systematically characterized and evaluated for humic acid (HA) adsorption by batch experiments. With the increase of DAI content from 0 to 15%, the moisture of MAERs was elevated from 50.23% to 68.53%, along with the adsorption capacity increasing from 2.57 to 3.14 mmol g^-1. As the concentrations of co-existing cation (Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺) increased, the adsorption amounts of HA dropped drastically at first and increased a little at high cation concentrations. Although ion exchange was the primary mechanism for HA adsorption, other physical interactions and electrostatic attraction between HA molecules and newly formed oxonium group also played significant roles for HA adsorption. The MAERs could be efficiently regenerated by a mixture of NaCl/NaOH solution (10%/1%), and notably, the MAER-3 with the highest DAI content displayed unapparent loss of adsorption capacity during twenty-one successive adsorption-desorption cycles. These results suggested a novel resin adsorbent for its excellent performances on adsorption, regeneration, and sedimentation in water treatment for natural organic matter removal.
