Abstract
Polychlorinated Alkanes (PCAs) were analysed in 47 feed samples, 13 and 34 respectively of animal and plant origin, collected from the southern German market in 2023. The overall median concentration of ∑PCAs- was determined as 10ngg-1 ww, with plant-based feeds being considerably lower than feed of animal origin, with respective median values of 8.8 and 44ngg-1 ww. Highest levels of PCAs with respect to fresh weight were found in plant-based fats and oils, including the highest sample at more than 9000ngg-1 ww, followed by feed of animal origin, particularly fish meal. Seeds, press cakes, meals and soy based products were usually lower. The ratio of ∑PCAs- to ∑PCAs- was below 1 for almost all samples, potentially resulting from the European enforcement of the Stockholm Convention. Homologue response pattern revealed a small difference in the abundances of chain lengths - between feed of animal origin and plant-based feeds.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are widely produced chemicals. Short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) were listed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and candidate POPs under the Stockholm Convention, respectively. The present study explored the developmental toxicity and metabolic disruption caused by SCCPs and MCCPs in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae. CPs exposure at environmentally relevant levels caused no obvious phenotypic changes with zebrafish larvae except that the body length shortening was observed after exposure to CPs at 1-200 μg/L for 7 day post fertilization. A further metabolomic approach was conducted to explore the early biological responses of developmental toxicity induced by CPs at low dose (1, 5, and 10 μg/L). The results of metabolic disorder, pathway analysis and chronic values indicated that, compared with SCCPs, MCCPs exhibited more risks to zebrafish larvae at low doses. Lipid metabolism was markedly affected in SCCPs exposure group, whereas MCCPs primarily disturbed lipid metabolism, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolisms. Compare with SCCPs, the relatively higher lipid solubility, protein affinity and metabolic rate of MCCPs can probably explain why MCCP-mediated metabolic disruption was significantly higher than that of SCCP. Notably, SCCPs and MCCPs have the same potential to cause cancer, but no evidence indicates the mutagenicity. In summary, our study provides insight into the potential adverse outcome for SCCP and MCCP at low doses.

Abstract
The analysis of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) is today an analytical challenge. Indeed, it is still impractical to describe their real composition in terms of polychlorinated alkanes (PCAs) homologue groups, which dominate technical mixtures. The co-elution of PCA congeners generates interferences due to the competition phenomena which occur during the ionisation process as well as to the dependence of the ionisation sources on the PCA chemistry. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the influence of chromatographic separation, by LC-ESI-HRMS coupling, on the PCA homologue group pattern and, eventually, on their determination in food samples from interlaboratory studies. For this, three different mobile phases and six LC chromatographic columns were studied in order to optimise the analysis of CP mixtures. The first results showed that the use of a MeOH/H2O mobile phase reveals more appropriately the higher chlorinated PCAs. However, using ACN/H2O led to less ion species, with almost exclusively [M + Cl]- adducts, formed using post-column dichloromethane addition. Regarding the choice of the stationary phases, Hypercarb column provided a completely different homologue group pattern from the other chromatographic columns, in relation with the stronger retention of PCAs. Among the other columns, the C30 column better highlighted the short-chain PCAs compared to the C18 column conventionally used. Because the regulations now concern short-chain CPs, the quantification of food samples was then carried out on the C30 column. The optimised LC-ESI-HRMS conditions using C30 column and MeOH/H2O solvent mixture led to a quantification of PCAs in samples from interlaboratory studies with satisfactory accuracy (|Z-score| ≤ 2) and precision (<15%).

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are synthetic organic compounds of growing environmental and social concern. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) were listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in 2017. Further, in 2021, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) were proposed to be listed as POPs. We investigated SCCP and MCCP amounts and homolog profiles in four wild fish species from Bahía Blanca Estuary, a South Atlantic Ocean coastal habitat in Argentina. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in 41% and 36% of the samples, respectively. SCCP amounts ranged from <12 to 29 ng g-1 wet weight and <750-5887 ng g-1 lipid weight, whereas MCCP amounts ranged from <7 to 19 ng g-1 wet weight and <440-2848 ng g-1 lipid weight. Amounts were equivalent to those found in fish from the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans and from some North American and Tibetan Plateau lakes. We performed a human health risk assessment and found no direct risks to human health for SCCP or MCCP ingestion, according to present knowledge. Regarding their environmental behavior, no significant differences were observed among SCCP amounts, sampling locations, species, sizes, lipid content, and age of the specimens. However, there were significant differences in MCCP amounts across species, which could be attributed to fish size and feeding habits. Homolog profiles in all fish were dominated by the medium-chlorinated (Cl6 and Cl7) CPs and shorter chain length CPs were the most abundant, with C10Cl6 (12.8%) and C11Cl6 (10.1%) being the predominant SCCPs and C14Cl6 (19.2%) and C14Cl7 (12.4%) the predominant MCCPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the presence of CPs in the environment in Argentina and the South Atlantic Ocean. CP occurrence in the environment, particularly in the food chain, promotes the need for further research on their occurrence and behavior, and the impact of CPs in marine ecosystems in Argentina.

Abstract
Herein, we demonstrate the ability of a dual-purpose periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) probe to track the complex chlorinated paraffin (CP) composition in living animals by assembling it as an adsorbent-assisted atmospheric pressure chemical ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (APCI-FT-ICR-MS) platform and synchronously performing it as the in vivo sampling device. First, synchronous solvent-free ionization and in-source thermal desorption of CP homologues were achieved by the introduction of the PMO adsorbent-assisted APCI module, generating exclusive adduct ions ([M - H]-) of individual CP homologues (CnClm) with enhanced ionization efficiency. Improved detection limits of short- and medium-chain CPs (0.10-24 and 0.48-5.0 pg/μL) were achieved versus those of the chloride-anion attachment APCI-MS methods. Second, the dual-purpose PMO probe was applied to extract the complex CP compositions in living animals, following APCI-FT-ICR-MS analysis. A modified pattern-deconvolution algorithm coupled with the sampling-rate calibration method was used for the quantification of CPs in living fish. In vivo quantification of a tilapia exposed to technical CPs for 7 days was successfully achieved, with ∑SCCPs and ∑MCCPs of the sampled fish calculated to be 1108 ± 289 and 831 ± 266 μg/kg, respectively. Meanwhile, 58 potential CP metabolites were identified in living fish for the first time during in vivo sampling of CPs, a capacity that could provide an important tool for future study regarding its expected risks to humans and its environmental fate.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are released into natural environment during processes of production and utilization with diet being the most important exposure route of CPs for human beings. Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have lower molecular weights, higher vapor pressures, and higher water solubilities than medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs), making SCCPs more likely to be readily released into the environment. Thus, SCCPs were enlisted as persistent organic pollutants being included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. This review article summarized sample preparation and instrumental analysis methods of CPs for food types such as oil, meat, and aquatic foods. In addition, reported concentrations and profiles, dietary intake and risk assessment of CPs in food samples from various regions, such as China, Japan, and Germany are discussed for studies published between 2005 and 2022. This review is timely given the lack of a recent literature summary of the concentration and distribution of CPs in food. All these studies warranted the necessity to maintain continuous monitoring of CPs concentrations and their potential health risks given the concentrations of CPs in food are increasing worldwide.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), a class of persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulated compounds, have received increasing attention for their environmental occurrence and ecological and human health risks worldwide in the past decades. Understanding the environmental behavior and fate of CPs faces a huge challenge owing to the extremely complex CP congeners. Consequently, the aims of the present study are to summarize and integrate the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of CPs, including the occurrence of CPs in biota, tissue distribution, biomagnification, and trophic transfer, and biotransformation of CPs in plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates in detail. Biota samples collected in China showed higher CP concentrations than other regions, which is consistent with their huge production and usage. The lipid content is the major factor that determines the physical burden of CPs in tissues or organs. Regarding the bioaccumulation of CPs and their influence factors, inconsistent results were obtained. Biotransformation is an important reason for this variable. Some CP congeners are readily biodegradable in plants, animals, and microorganisms. Hydroxylation, dechlorination, chlorine rearrangement, and carbon chain decomposition are potential biotransformation pathways for the CP congeners. Knowledge of the influence of chain length, chlorination degree, constitution, and stereochemistry on the tissue distribution, bioaccumulation, and biotransformation is still scarce.

Abstract
This study reports on the occurrence and distribution of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in edible insects purchased from Asia and Europe. A total of 36 edible insect samples (n = 24 from Asia, n = 12 from Europe) authorized and prepared for human consumption were purchased and analyzed for SCCPs and MCCPs via gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. SCCPs were detected in 83% of all edible insect samples with an overall median ∑SCCP concentration of 8.7 ng/g dry weight (dw) and a range of <2.0 to 410 ng/g dw, while MCCPs were present in 92% of samples with a median ∑MCCP concentration of 51 ng/g dw and a range of <6.0 to 380 ng/g dw. Median ∑SCCP and ∑MCCP levels in edible insects purchased in Asia were approximately two- and four-times higher, respectively, than those from Europe, while the difference was statistically significant for ∑MCCPs (p < 0.001). Differences in homologue patterns were also observed between Asian and European samples to suggest diverse sources of CP contamination to insects which may include environmental accumulation, industrial processing equipment and food additives. Estimated daily intake of SCCPs and MCCPs via consumption of edible insects suggested that adverse health outcomes were very unlikely, but that continued monitoring of insect farming and processing practices are warranted.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals produced in large quantities. Short-chain CPs (SCCPs) were classified as persistent organic pollutants under the Stockholm Convention in 2017. Medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) became candidate persistent organic pollutants in 2021. CPs are now ubiquitously found in the environment. Honey bees can be exposed to CPs during foraging, and this exposure subsequently results in the contamination of honey and other bee products along with colony food production and storage. Here, SCCP and MCCP concentrations in honey collected from Chinese apiaries in 2015 and 2021 were determined. Total CP concentrations in honey from 2021 to 2015 were comparable, but the ratio of MCCPs/SCCPs was higher in 2021 than in 2015. SCCP and MCCP congener group profiles in all honey samples were similar and dominated by C10-11Cl6-7 and C14Cl6-7, respectively. MCCP concentrations were also higher than SCCP concentrations in bees, pollen, and wax but not in bee bread, which were all collected in 2021. The order of average CP concentrations was determined as wax > bee > pollen > bee bread > honey. Poor relationships were found between SCCP concentrations in honey and other samples, but a relationship between MCCP concentrations in honey and other samples was observed. Migration tests of CPs in plastic bottles showed essentially no migration into honey during storage. The risks to humans from CPs in honey are low.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are an emerging group of environmental pollutants associated with adverse effects on human health (such as endocrine disruption and possible carcinogenicity). CPs are classified into several groups: short- (SCCPs), medium- (MCCPs) and long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs). In this study, CPs were determined in fish oil-based omega-3 dietary supplements (DS) representing widely consumed products that might be contaminated with various lipophilic contaminants including CPs. The CPs were isolated from DS (n = 85) by solid phase extraction. The SCCPs and MCCPs were determined by gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry operated in a negative chemical ionisation mode. The LCCPs (up to C21) were screened using supercritical fluid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry with electrospray ionisation operated in negative mode. The CP concentrations varied from <0.01 to 56.48 μg/g fat for SCCPs (median 0.12 μg/g fat; limit of quantification, LOQ, for SCCPs was exceeded in 51 out of 85 samples) and from <0.03-89.08 μg/g fat for MCCPs (median 0.26 μg/g fat; LOQ for MCCPs was exceeded in 66 out of 85 samples), respectively. The LCCPs were not quantified in this study, nevertheless their limit of detection (0.5 μg/g fat) was exceeded in 7 out of 85 samples. Due to high levels of CPs, DS might pose as a significant source of CPs exposure to some population groups.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) have been found to occur ubiquitously in foodstuff of both animal and plant origin. However, limited information is available on the content of CPs in green tea, one of the most commonly consumed beverages worldwide. Herein, 107 commercial green tea samples originating from 11 provinces of China, were collected to study the occurrence of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively). The concentration of SCCPs in all green tea samples ranged from 4.99 to 717 ng/g (mean: 55.7 ng/g), while MCCPs ranged from 2.55 to 543 ng/g (mean: 33.5 ng/g). CP profiles in green tea samples from different provinces exhibited no regional differences. To identify the potential sources of CPs in green tea, 19 tea packaging samples were collected and analyzed, showing that SCCPs and MCCPs existed at much higher concentrations in the tea packaging material than in the teas. Migration tests indicated that CPs could migrate from packaging into teas during storage, with the migration velocity and efficiency of SCCPs being higher than MCCPs.

Abstract
Germany is one of several major European producers of chlorinated paraffins (CPs). This study showed that not only the legacy short-chain products (SCCPs, C10-13), but also the current-use medium- and long-chain products (MCCPs, C14-17; LCCPs, C>17) as well as the very-short-chain impurities (vSCCPs, C<10) are ubiquitous in the 72 samples collected from the coastal, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems across the country. The concentrations of LCCPs surpassed those of the other CPs in 40% of the biota samples. Archived bream samples collected downstream of a CP-manufacturing factory showed decreasing temporal trends of (v)SCCPs and relatively constant levels of MCCPs from 1995 to 2019; however, the overall levels of LCCPs have increased by 290%, reflecting the impact of chemical regulation policies on changes in CP production. A visualization algorithm was developed for integrating CP results from various matrices to illustrate spatial tendencies of CP pollution. Higher levels of (v)SCCPs were indicated in the former West Germany region, while MCCP and LCCP concentrations did not seem to differ between former East and West Germany, suggesting relatively equal production and use of these chemicals after the German Reunification. The results provide an early warning signal of environmental concerns from LCCPs on the eve of their booming global production and use.

Abstract
Because of their highly persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic properties, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have become emerging contaminants and have been included in Annex A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention since 2017. The contamination of SCCPs has been observed in the environment and biota worldwide but has not been detected in Taiwanese river ecosystems. Thus, this study aimed to determine the occurrence of SCCPs in sediments and fish from 30 major rivers in Taiwan and to evaluate the risk of SCCPs to river ecosystems and human health. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments and fish ranged from ND (not detected) to 12.6 mg/kg dw and ND to 2.07 mg/kg ww, respectively. The concentrations of SCCPs in sediments were significantly correlated with some indicators of the discharge sources and water quality variables, indicating that SCCPs were released via human activities and various discharges into rivers and accumulated in sediments. The bioaccumulation of SCCPs in fish exhibited species-specific profiles and was related to environmental contamination levels and the living pattern and trophic level of the fish. The SCCP levels in sediments from 20 major rivers in Taiwan might pose a potential ecological risk to river ecosystems according to the criteria of the Federal Environmental Quality Guidelines in Canada, the biota-sediment accumulation factor and the risk quotient. Consumption of SCCP-contaminated river fish by different gender and age groups showed no significant health risk to residents in Taiwan evaluated by the estimated daily intake and hazard quotient. However, there was a health concern for the 0- to 3-year-old group due to the consumption of contaminated river fish at a bioaccessibility of 100% for SCCPs by the margin of exposure. Routine monitoring of SCCPs in river ecosystems is needed to protect aquatic organisms and human health.

Abstract
Data on long-chain chlorinated paraffins (LCCPs) is extremely sparse, despite their use and emission are increasing with the phasing out of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs). In this study, we analyzed chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in foodstuff samples (551 pooled samples, 93 items) divided into eight categories collected from Jinan, Shandong Province of China, by atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (APCI-qToF-MS), to investigate the occurrence, contamination patterns and homologue patterns of LCCPs in foodstuff commonly consumed in traditional Chinese diet. LCCP intake through diet was estimated as well. LCCPs were detected in all pooled samples with geometric mean (GM) concentrations ranging from 1.8 to 21.9 ng/g wet weight (ng/g ww), contributing to 9-28% of the total CP mass in the studied foodstuff categories. The contamination patterns of LCCPs differed from SCCPs and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs), as reflected by the patterns of mass distribution, and by the lack of correlations between LCCP and S/MCCP concentrations in various foodstuff categories. The homologue profiles of LCCPs were extremely complex and diverse, with frequent detection of C30-36Cl2-15 very-long-chain chlorinated paraffin (vLCCP) congeners. The homologue profiles of eggs stood out for their high abundance of C18-22Cl9-13 LCCP congeners. LCCPs contributed 6.0-25.2% (8.9% for median estimation) to the estimated dietary intake (EDI) for total CPs through diet based on estimations using different percentiles of CP concentrations. The median estimate of dietary LCCP intake for adults in Jinan was 287.9 ng/kg_bw/day, reaching ~10- to 100-fold of that in Sweden and Canada. Considering the continuing production, use and emission of LCCPs, as well as the similar toxicity effects induced by LCCPs as SCCPs and MCCPs, attention should be paid to the health risk posed by LCCPs, or all CPs as a class of contaminants.

Abstract
This study reports on concentrations of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively) in a wide range of food samples (n = 211) purchased in Belgium during 2020. Samples were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and quantified using chlorine content calibration. ∑SCCPs were present above LOQ in 25% of samples with an overall range of <LOQ to 58 ng/g wet weight (ww), while ∑MCCPs were identified in 66% of samples ranging from <LOQ to 250 ng/g ww. ∑MCCP concentrations were greater than those of ∑SCCPs in all 48 samples in which both groups were detected with an average ∑MCCP/∑SCCP ratio of 5.8 (ranging from 1.3 to 81). In general, the greatest CP concentrations were observed in foods classified as animal and vegetable fats and oils and sugar and confectionary for both SCCPs and MCCPs. Significant correlations between lipid content in food samples and CP levels illustrated the role of lipids in accumulating CPs within foodstuffs, while industrial processing, food packaging and environmental conditions are each likely to contribute to overall CP loads. Selected samples (n = 20) were further analysed by liquid chromatography-high resolution MS (LC-HRMS) to investigate homologue profiles and the occurrence of long-chain CPs (LCCPs). LCCPs were detected in 35% of the 20 subset samples while the HRMS results for SCCPs and MCCPs matched closely with those obtained by GC-MS. This study reveals the widespread occurrence of SCCPs and MCCPs in Belgian food and indicates that LCCPs may represent a substantial contribution to overall CP levels in foodstuffs.

Abstract
As new persistent organic pollutants, short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have recently received particular attention. However, knowledge on their bioaccumulation and trophic magnification in marine organisms from East China Sea (ECS) is still scare. In this study, we investigated the concentrations of SCCPs in seawater (n = 15) and marine organisms (n = 88) collected from ECS. The total concentrations of SCCPs (∑SCCPs) ranged from 12.5 to 242 ng/L in seawater and from 12.8 to 1819 ng/g wet weight (ww) in organisms. C10-11 SCCPs and Cl5-7 SCCPs were the predominant homologues in all samples, with the mean proportions of 70 ± 6.5% and 80 ± 7.8% in seawater, as well as 52-77% and 61-84% in marine organisms, respectively. The logarithm bioaccumulation factor (log BAF) values of ∑SCCPs were in the range of 2.04-3.79 in zooplankton, fish, shrimp, crab, shellfish, snail, and cephalopod. The log BAF values of SCCP homologues (1.33-4.75) increased significantly with the increase of their logarithm octanol-water partition coefficients (log KOW) values, indicating that hydrophobicity is the major factor controlling the bioaccumulation of SCCPs. The trophic magnification factor (TMF) value of ∑SCCPs was calculated to be 3.98, indicating the potential trophic magnification of SCCPs in this marine food web from ECS. A slightly increasing trend was observed between the TMF values of SCCP homologues and their log KOW values. Overall, for the first time, this study systematically examined the bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of SCCPs in the marine food web from East China Sea.

Abstract
Structure, reactivity and physico-chemical properties of polyhalogenated compounds determine their up-take, transport, bio-accumulation, transformation and toxicity and their environmental fate. In technical mixtures of chlorinated paraffins (CPs), these properties are distributed due to the presence of thousands of homologues. We hypothesized that roles of CP dehalogenation reactions, catalyzed by the haloalkane dehalogenase LinB, depend on structural properties of the substrates, e.g. chlorination degree and carbon-chain length. We exposed mixtures of chlorinated undecanes, dodecanes and tridecanes in-vitro to LinB from Sphingobium Indicum bacteria. These single-chain CP-materials also contain small amounts of chlorinated olefins (COs), which can be distinct by mathematical deconvolution of respective mass-spectra. With this procedure, we obtained homologue-specific transformation kinetics of substrates differing in saturation degree, chlorination degree and carbon chain-length. For all homologues, two-stage first-order kinetic models were established, which described the faster conversion of reactive material and the slower transformation of more persistent material. Half-lifes of 0.5-3.2 h and 56-162 h were determined for more reactive and more persistent CP-material. Proportions of persistent material increased steadily from 18 to 67% for lower (Cl6) to higher (Cl11) chlorinated paraffins and olefins. Conversion efficiencies decreased with increasing chlorination degree from 97 to 70%. Carbon-chain length had only minor effects on transformation rates. Hence, the conversion was faster and more efficient for lower-chlorinated material, and slower for higher-chlorinated and longer-chained CPs and COs. Current legislation has banned short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and forced a transition to longer-chain CPs. This may be counterproductive with regard to enzymatic transformation with LinB.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) have been applied as additives in a wide range of consumer products, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, mining conveyor belts, paints, sealants, adhesives and as flame retardants. Consequently, CPs have been found in many matrices. Of all the CP groups, short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have raised an alarming concern globally due to their toxicity, persistence and long-range transportation in the environment. As a result, SCCPs were listed in the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in May 2017. Additionally, a limit for the presence of SCCPs in other CP mixtures was set at 1% by weight. CPs can be released into the environment throughout their life cycle; therefore, it becomes crucial to assess their effects in different matrices. Although about 199 studies on SCCP concentration in different matrices have been published in other continents; however, there are scarce/or limited studies on SCCP concentration in Africa, particularly on consumer products, landfill leachates and sediment samples. So far, published studies on SCCP concentration in the continent include SCCPs in egg samples, e-waste recycling area and indoor dust in Ghana and South Africa, despite absence of any production of SCCPs in Africa. However, there still remains a huge research gap in the continent of Africa on SCCPs. Consequently, there is a need to develop robust SCCP inventories in Africa since the Stockholm Convention has already developed guidance document in this respect. This review, therefore, examines the state of knowledge pertaining to the levels and trends of these contaminants in Africa and further provides research gaps that need to be considered in order to better understand the global scale of the contaminant.

Abstract
Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) have been listed as a new class of persistent organic pollutants by the Stockholm Convention. SCCPs exhibit carcinogenic-, endocrine-, and metabolism-disrupting effects. However, the knowledge of the immunomodulatory effects of SCCPs and their underlying mechanisms, especially in specific immune cells, remains limited. In addition to SCCPs, C9-13-CPs have also been detected in humans. In this study, murine RAW264.7 macrophages were exposed to C9-13-CPs at environmentally relevant concentrations to investigate whether or how C9-13-CPs exhibit immunomodulatory effects. The results showed that the exposure of RAW264.7 cells to C9-13-CPs increased cell viability, as assayed by MTT analysis at 490 nm, and also promoted cell proliferation, as indicated by EdU uptake assay, which was measured at excitation and emission wavelengths of 488 and 512 nm, respectively. In addition, exposure to C9-13-CPs not only led to elevated ATP level and intracellular Ca2+ level but also caused AMPK signaling activation and NF-κB signaling inhibition. Moreover, molecular docking showed that the β2-AR receptor could bind to C9-13-CPs. Taken together, these results suggest that the immune dysfunction of RAW264.7 cells caused by C9-13-CPs is closely related to the β2-AR/AMPK/NF-κB signaling axis.

Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with negative chemical ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-NCI-QTOF/MS) method, which allows for a precise chromatographic separation of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs). A new reversed-phase column setup was used, which allows for more accurate separation of MCCPs compared to known GC × GC methods. In a pilot study, 25 freshwater fish samples were analyzed with this method to characterize chlorinated paraffin (CP) compositions. The CP composition was similar in the samples, an observation that is important for the development of a suitable routine method. MCCP contamination was considerably higher than SCCP contamination, with concentrations of 1.3-410 ng/g of wet weight and 0.67-6.5 ng/g of wet weight, respectively. These results were compared to those obtained using a second method, direct injection-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI)-Orbitrap/mass spectrometry (MS). GC × GC separation was considered to be advantageous for accurate quantification of CP contamination.

Abstract
Aquatic foods are important sources of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) to humans. Farmed crabs are bottom-dwelling aquatic animals, and can accumulate CPs through food and aquatic environment. However, limited information is available on CPs concentrations in and sources to farmed crabs. In this study, short-chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium-chain CPs (MCCPs) concentrations in 59 samples from the farmed crab food web (crab, crab feed, and aquaculture environment) were determined. The samples were from 17 crab farms in Anhui Province, Jiangxi Province, and Shanghai, in China. The SCCPs and MCCPs concentrations in the crab samples were 82-1760 and not detected-680 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. The dominant SCCPs and MCCPs in the crab samples were C10Cl6-7 and C14Cl7-8, respectively. The SCCPs concentrations in the crab food web samples were higher than the MCCPs concentrations. SCCPs contamination of the crab food web samples was not directly related to CPs product use. The main factors affecting SCCPs concentrations in the crab samples were different for different crab farms. Crab feed and the aquaculture environment could be sources of SCCPs to farmed crabs. No marked health risks are posed to humans through consuming CPs in Chinese mitten crabs farmed in China.

Abstract
Swift degradation of the coral reef ecosystems urges the need to identify the reef decline drivers. Due to their widespread use, bioaccumulative and toxic characteristics, chlorinated organic compounds, such as chlorinated paraffins (CPs), are regarded as specific pollutants of concern. Yet little is known about the occurrence of CPs in the coral reef ecosystems. This study focuses on the short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs). Their distribution and congener pattern were investigated in the water-SPM-sediment system and in the corals of the Larak coral reef for the first time. Chlorinated paraffins were detected in all the coral species. Their total loadings ranged from 42.1 to 178 ng g-1 dw in coral tissue, from 6.0 to 144 ng g-1dw in the skeleton, and from 55.0 to 240 ng g-1dw in zooxanthellae. Soft corals were found to accumulate more CPs than Scleractinian corals. Zooxanthellae and mucus accumulated more CPs than tissue and skeleton. In most cases, congener group patterns were dominated by C13 (for SCCPs) and C17 (MCCPs) groups, respectively. The congener patterns of CPs altered to some extent between mucus and the remaining coral compartments. High loadings of CPs were detected in the skeleton of the bleached corals. Moreover, a significant negative correlation between the levels of CPs and the symbiodinium density was observed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop methods for the determination of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs; MCCPs) in vegetable oils and fish employing gas chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry because of a lack of information on the presence of chlorinated paraffins in food consumed in Europe. For isolation of CPs from fish, an ethyl acetate extraction followed by a clean-up of the extract by gel permeation chromatography was performed. The same purification step was used for the isolation of CPs from the vegetable oils. The concentration range for SCCPs was <10-389 ng/g lipid weight (lw, mean 36 ng/g lw for the oils and 28 ng/g lw for the fish) and that for MCCPs was <20-543 ng/g lw (mean 55 ng/g lw for the oils and 59 ng/g lw for the fish). There was found a high variability in concentrations of CPs influenced by area of origin.

Abstract
Our previous study revealed bioaccumulation and trophic magnification of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in marine organisms. However, little is known about the occurrence and distribution of CPs in coral reef ecosystems. In this study, the levels of short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) were determined in ten common coral species from the coastal regions of Hainan Island, South China Sea. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in all coral species in concentrations ranging from 184 to 7,410 and 305 to 14,800 ng g-1 lw, respectively. In most of the coral species, congener group patterns of the SCCPs and MCCPs were dominated by C10Cl6-8 and C14Cl7-8, respectively. The CP levels and congener group patterns changed slightly between the dry and wet seasons. Redundancy analyses indicated that the accumulation patterns of CPs in different corals were partly influenced by Symbiodinium densities and coral species. Significant negative correlations were found between Symbiodinium densities and CP levels. This is the first report of CP exposure in reef corals and highlights the need for CP toxicity data to evaluate the health of coral reef ecosystems.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate temporal trends of "old" and "new" persistent halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in Taihu Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China, and the associated health risks. Five fish species were consecutively collected from the lake every year during 2011-2018. HOPs including 37 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs and MCCPs), 19 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and 10 new brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), were measured. The results showed that all the HOPs were detected, with MCCPs and NBFRs showing the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. The levels of SCCPs and MCCPs were several orders of magnitude higher than those of the other HOPs. There were obvious increasing trends for SCCPs, MCCPs, and hexachlorobenzene, but a decreasing trend for PBDEs. No obvious increasing or decreasing trends were observed for the other HOPs. The present study indicated that the use of NBFRs to replace PBDEs was not yet clearly observed. Fish consumption did not result in non-carcinogenic risks, but posed low carcinogenic risks, with PCBs and DDTs being the highest-risk contaminants because of historical residues. This is the first study for the temporal variations of the HOPs in the lake.

Abstract
Trophic magnification factors (TMFs, i.e., the average change in the log-concentration of a pollutant per trophic level) have been extensively assessed for the so-called persistent organic pollutants, especially organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are biomagnified along the food web. In contrast, trophic dilution was documented for pollutants with a high metabolic conversion rate, such as phthalate plasticizers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, the fate of their metabolites across the food web has been rarely investigated. In this comparative study, the trophodynamics of 104 micropollutants and 25 of their metabolites were investigated in a freshwater food web from the urban Orge River, France. Trophic levels were determined using stable isotopes. Pyrethroid pesticides and their metabolites were not detected. As predicted, PCBs and OCPs biomagnified (TMF >1), while all chlorinated paraffins (CPs), PAHs, and phthalates underwent a trophic dilution (TMF <1). TMFs significantly decreased with a metabolic transformation rate and increased with hydrophobicity. The levels of PAH or phthalate metabolites were not significantly correlated with trophic levels or underwent a trophic dilution. This study highlighted that the relative contribution of metabolite levels in TMF values calculated for both parent compound and its metabolite(s) is weak compared to TMF values of the parent compound only in a riverine food web.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are globally pervasive contaminants that are toxic to humans and wildlife. Inconsistent biomagnification behaviors in different food chains have been reported, and very few studies have been conducted to investigate the maternal transfer of CPs in ovoviviparous species. This study investigated the biomagnification of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (S/MCCPs) in two aquatic food chains, as well as maternal transfer of S/MCCPs in watersnakes collected from an e-waste polluted pond in southern China. The concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs varied from 1.2 to 250 μg/g lipid weight (lw) and from 2.3 to 200 μg/g lw in the collected organisms. The SCCP homologue profiles in prey (fish and prawn) differed from those in predators (watersnake and waterbird egg), while MCCP homologue group patterns were homogeneous. All maternal transfer concentration ratios (egg to muscle) of S/MCCPs in the watersnakes were lower than 1 and negatively correlated with the octanol-water partition coefficients (log KOW), different from the maternal transfer of halogenated aromatic pollutants in the watersnake. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) of S/MCCPs for fish-watersnake muscle food chain were larger than 1, while BMFs for the fish-waterbird egg food chain were less than 1. However, when watersnake egg was used to calculate BMF, no biomagnification was found. BMFs in the two food chains showed significant positive linear correlations with chlorine atoms, but no significant correlation with carbon atom numbers, which suggested that a congener-group-specific elimination and excretion process for S/MCCPs exist.

Abstract
Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals that are produced in large quantities and used globally. Human exposure to CPs is primarily through dietary intake, especially from animal-derived food products. Even so, there is little information regarding CP concentrations in dairy products. In this study, raw samples of cow milk were collected from various regions in China within the Neimenggu (n = 10), Hebei (n = 9), Shandong (n = 10), Henan (n = 10) and Hubei (n = 9) provinces. The mean concentrations of short chain CPs (SCCPs) and medium chain CPs (MCCPs) in the milk samples from industrial areas (1670 and 190 ng/g lipid, respectively) were higher than those from non-industrial areas (490 and 72 ng/g lipid, respectively). In most samples, C10H16Cl6 and C14H23Cl7 were the primary SCCP and MCCP congener groups, respectively. The mean concentrations of SCCPs and MCCPs in dairy cow feed (silage) were determined to be 750 and 36 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The SCCP and MCCP congener group patterns in the milk were similar to those in the silage, indicating that animal feed intake might be an important pathway for the exposure of dairy cows to CPs. Thus, the ingestion of CPs by humans through dairy products should not be neglected and the contamination of animal feed by CPs should be considered.

Abstract
The European Commission asked EFSA for a scientific opinion on the risks for animal and human health related to the presence of chlorinated paraffins in feed and food. The data for experimental animals were reviewed and the CONTAM Panel identified the liver, kidney and thyroid as the target organs for the SCCP and MCCP mixtures tested in repeated dose toxicity studies. Decreased pup survival and subcutaneous haematoma/haemorrhage were also identified as critical effects for an MCCP mixture. For the LCCP mixtures tested, the liver was identified as the target organ. The Panel selected as reference points a BMDL 10 of 2.3 mg/kg bw per day for increased incidence of nephritis in male rats, and of 36 mg/kg bw per day for increased relative kidney weights in male and female rats for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively. For LCCPs, a reference point relevant for humans could not be identified. Due to the limitations in the toxicokinetic and toxicological database, the Panel concluded that derivation of a health-based guidance value was not appropriate. Only limited data on the occurrence of SCCPs and MCCPs in some fish species were submitted to EFSA. No data were submitted for LCCPs. Thus, a robust exposure assessment and consequently a complete risk characterisation could not be performed. A preliminary risk characterisation based only on the consumption of fish was performed, and the calculated margins of exposure suggested no health concern for this limited scenario. The Panel noted that dietary exposure will be higher due to the contribution of CPs from other foods. The Panel was not able to identify reference points for farm animals, horses and companion animals. No occurrence data for feed were submitted to EFSA. Therefore, no risk characterisation could be performed for any of these animal species.

Abstract
Short-chain chlorinated paraffin (SCCP) pollution has become a global threat. Much attention has been paid to their environmental occurrence and toxicity. In this review, we summarized the wide distribution of SCCPs in various environmental matrices and biota, including human beings. Toxicokinetics and the toxicities of SCCPs, including lethality, hepatotoxicity, developmental toxicity, carcinogenicity, endocrine- and metabolism-disrupting effects, and immunomodulatory effects have been considered. The mechanisms of SCCP toxicity are mainly related to oxidative stress, metabolic disturbance, endocrine disruption and binding to biomacromolecules. In the future, further studies of SCCPs should focus on searching for their novel toxicity targets, and uncovering their toxic effects using transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and mutigenerational toxicity.

Abstract
Short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCP) and medium-chained chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) are two of the main groups currently used to classify chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Since only SCCPs have been restricted by the Stockholm Convention, a robust but selective analysis with comparable results especially for SCCPs, but also for all other CPs is needed to ensure official controls to enforce future resulting food legislation. Failing that, expansion of the legislation towards total CP or to include MCCPs and other main groups needs to be considered. A survey taken amongst official and private laboratories in the EU and beyond revealed a large variety of methods currently in use or in planning stages for CP analysis. In June 2017, spiked samples of coconut fat were sent to 27 registered participants from 18 countries for an interlaboratory study. In July 2018, lard samples spiked with CPs, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were sent to 13 registered participants from 11 countries. In both cases, more than 55% of participants had a satisfactory overall performance (AZ2<3, σ = 25%). The greatest challenge seemed to be correct quantification of SCCP and MCCP mixtures, hinting at future problems with the through biodegradation much more complex food samples. Of the wide variety of methods being used, GC-MS based methods were favoured. Both HRMS and LRMS methods were able to perform satisfactorily. Identified influencing factors included choice of instrument, choice of standards and data processing strategy. These factors need to be further investigated in future interlaboratory studies.

Abstract
Very short-chain chlorinated paraffins (vSCCPs, C6-9) occurred in 94% of wildlife samples from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China, with CnClm comparable to that of a local CP product, CP-52. Therefore, we determined the content of vSCCPs in CP-52 using a mathematical deconvolution technique. Then with CP-52 and several other reference standards, vSCCPs together with short-, medium-, and long-chain CPs were quantified in 21 wildlife species from an artificial wetland ecosystem and a freshwater ecosystem in the YRD. Concentrations of vSCCPs ranged from 2.6 to 8400 ng/g lipid. These concentrations were 1.2-380 fold lower than SCCPs, but were significantly correlated with those of SCCPs. vSCCP concentrations were comparable to or higher than reported for brominated flame retardants in the same samples. Bioaccumulation tendency of vSCCPs was identified in two benthic species, indicating congener-specific accumulation of vSCCPs in the environment.

Abstract
Most emitters of short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) in China are located in eastern China, posing potential risks to the marine environment and food web. Here we employed a comprehensive atmospheric transport model combined with multiple environmental compartment exchange modules and a marine food web model to simulate levels and risks of SCCPs in the marine environment and fish in the Yellow Sea (YS), East China Sea (ECS), and South China Sea (SCS). Results unveiled a decreasing SCCP level in seawaters and sediments towards offshore. The modeled SCCP total (dry + wet) loadings to the three seawater bodies ranged from 0.0013 to 0.1635 mg/m2/season and gaseous diffusive deposition ranged from 43 to 4443 kg/month. The meteorological factors and secondary emission contributing to seasonal changes in SCCPs were also discussed. A tagging technique was used to trace origins of SCCPs, demonstrating that source proximity contributes most in SCCP contamination to these seawater bodies. Modeled SCCP levels in 5 marine fish in the YS, ECS, and SCS ranged from 23 to 111 ng/g. Our results showed the current SCCP levels in the marine environment and fish did not pose exposure risks to fish consumers for different age groups and genders. However, if consumed fish were harvested and imported from more seriously contaminated seawaters by SCCPs, the estimated dietary intake (EDI) would considerably increase.

Abstract
Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs, C10-13) were listed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention in 2017 and pose extensive exposure risks to humans. To our knowledge, there have been no studies reporting the immmunomodulatory effects of SCCPs until now. C9-CPs have also been shown to be present in the environment. In this study, adult male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 1, 10, or 100 mg/kg/d C9-13-CPs by gavage for 28 d. The results showed that compared to those of the controls, exposure to C9-13-CPs led to increased spleen weight, delimited germinal centers, enhanced energy metabolism, and elevated glutathione content, but no variation in the malonaldehyde level in the spleen was observed. Exposure to C9-13-CPs also increased the populations of splenic lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, NK cells, and the ratio of the CD3+/CD19+ subsets and CD4+/CD8+ subsets compared to those of the controls. RNA-seq revealed 424 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (fold change ≥ 1.5, FDR < 0.05) in the spleen between the control group and the 100 mg/kg/d C9-13-CPs-treated group. KEGG analysis demonstrated that folate biosynthesis, pathways in cancer and thyroid hormone signaling were the three most significantly enriched pathways, and despite not reaching statistical significance, some immune-related pathways were also enriched in the KEGG functional enrichment analysis, including the chemokine signaling pathway (FDR < 0.0584), the NF-κB signaling pathway (FDR < 0.0663), Th17 cell differentiation (FDR < 0.0839), and the Jak-STAT signaling pathway. Moreover, compared to those of the controls, exposure to C9-13-CPs enhanced the Concanavalin A (Con A)-stimulated cultured splenocyte proliferation, while the exposure showed no effect on the splenocyte proliferation that was stimulated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Taken together, these results demonstrated that subacute exposure to C9-13-CPs could have immunomodulatory effects in mice. The present study helps to provide an understanding of the comprehensive health risks posed by C9-13-CPs.
