Aldehydes gas ozonation monitoring: Interest of SIFT/MS versus GC/FID

Atmospheric ozonolysis of crotonaldehyde in the absence and presence of hydroxylated silica oligomer cluster adsorption

As one of the main components of combustion of tobacco products occurs (CARB), crotonaldehyde has an acute toxicity and widely exists in the atmosphere, which is harmful to human health. The removal efficiency of VOCs by ozonation can reach 80-90%. Based on the theory of quantum chemistry, the degradation mechanism, kinetics and toxicity of crotonaldehyde by ozonation in gas phase and heterogeneous phase were studied. Ozone was added to the olefins unsaturated double bond to form a five-membered ring primary ozonide, which was further fractured due to its unstable structure to form a Criegee intermediate and an aldehyde compound. The reaction rate constant of crotonaldehyde with ozone was 1.24 × 10^-17 cm³ molecule^-1 s^-1 at 298 K and 1 atm, which was an order of magnitude higher than the experimental value. From toxicity assessment, it was found that the ozonation of crotonaldehyde is beneficial to the removal of toxicity. Mineral dust aerosol exists in the atmosphere in large quantities, and SiO₂ is the most abundant component. VOCs are transformed into particle state on their surface through homogeneous nucleation and heterogeneous nucleation. Referring to the crystal structure of SiO₂, five hydroxylated silica oligomer cluster structures were simulated and the adsorption configurations of crotonaldehyde on their surface were simulated. The adsorption of crotonaldehyde on the surface of the clusters was achieved by forming hydrogen bonds and had good adsorption effects. The adsorption of hydroxylated silica oligomer clusters didn't change the ozonation mechanism of crotonldehyde, but had a certain effect on the reaction rate.

Prediction and detection of human epileptic seizures based on SIFT-MS chemometric data

Although epilepsy is considered a public health issue, the burden imposed by the unpredictability of seizures is mainly borne by the patients. Predicting seizures based on electroencephalography has had mixed success, and the idiosyncratic character of epilepsy makes a single method of detection or prediction for all patients almost impossible. To address this problem, we demonstrate herein that epileptic seizures can not only be detected by global chemometric analysis of data from selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry but also that a simple mathematical model makes it possible to predict these seizures (by up to 4 h 37 min in advance with 92% and 75% of samples correctly classified in training and leave-one-out-cross-validation, respectively). These findings should stimulate the development of non-invasive applications (e.g., electronic nose) for different types of epilepsy and thereby decrease of the unpredictability of epileptic seizures.

VOC and carbonyl compound emissions of a fiberboard resulting from a coriander biorefinery: comparison with two commercial wood-based building materials

Indoor air quality is a major public health issue. It is related to the choice of construction materials and associated with VOC emissions. Two wood-based commercial panels were tested: a medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and a chipboard (CH), and they were compared to a material produced from a coriander biorefinery (COR). Indicators chosen to compare the materials were physical properties (density, bending properties, surface hardness, thickness swelling, and water absorption) and VOC emissions. Emissions were evaluated in an environmental chamber at 23 °C, 31 °C, and 36 °C, and during 28 days. Carbonyl emissions on day 1 at 23 °C were 74, 146, and 35 μg m^-2 h^-1, respectively, for MDF, CH, and COR. Terpenic emissions were 12, 185, and 37 μg m^-2 h^-1, respectively. Higher temperature resulted in higher emissions which decreased over time, except for formaldehyde. VOC emissions depended largely on material and temperature. Formaldehyde emission was 300 to 600 times lower for coriander boards (< 0.2 μg m^-2 h^-1), making them significantly more environmentally friendly materials in comparison with MDF and chipboard. These results highlight the interest of coriander by-products as raw materials for producing fiberboards with low impact on indoor air quality.

Ozone Quantification by Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry: Influence of Humidity and Manufacturing Gas of Ozone Generator

The quantification of ozone by SIFT-MS was investigated in conditions suitable with an industrial emission context (high ozone demand, dry air/oxygen as the manufacturing gas of the ozone generator, and high humidity levels beyond saturation at room conditions). Ozone reacts with four negative precursor ions available in the SIFT-MS device (NO₂^-, O₂^-, HO^-, and O^-), each precursor ion having its specific domain of linearity. For a high ozone concentration range, only NO₂^- and O₂^- have resulted in a linear behavior (between 1 and 100 ppmv of O₃ for NO₂^-, between 1 and 50 ppmv of O₃ for O₂^-). No water interference was identified during ozone measurements by SIFT-MS using NO₂^- and O₂^- precursor ions, even with extreme humidity levels. The presence of nitrogen oxide contaminants (due to the use of dry air as the manufacturing gas of the ozone generator) affected the ozone quantification by SIFT-MS. It is critical for NO₂^- precursor ions, whose rate constant varied as a function of NO₂ concentrations. With O₂^- precursor ion, ozone was successfully measured in the presence of nitrogen oxides; however, the secondary chemistry must be taken into account.
