Treatment of polluted river sediment by electrochemical oxidation: Changes of hydrophilicity and acute cytotoxicity of dissolved organic matter

The effects of electrochemical pretreatment and curing environment on strength and leaching of stabilized/solidified contaminated sediment

Stabilization and solidification (S/S) is known to improve the structural properties of sediment and reduce contaminant mobility, enabling the utilization of dredged contaminated sediment. Further reduction of contaminants (e.g., tributyltin (TBT) and metals) can be done using electrochemical treatment prior to S/S and could potentially minimize contaminant leaching. This is the first study on how electrochemical pretreatment affects the strength and leaching properties of stabilized sediments. It also investigates how salinity and organic carbon in the curing liquid affect the stabilized sediment.The results showed that the electrolysis reduced the content of TBT by 22% and zinc by 44% in the sediment. The electrolyzed stabilized samples met the requirements for compression strength and had a reduced surface leaching of zinc. Curing in saline water was beneficial for strength development and reduced the leaching of TBT compared to curing in fresh water. The results indicate that pretreatment prior to stabilization could be beneficial in reducing contaminant leaching and recovering metals from the sediment. The conclusion is that a better understanding of the changes in the sediment caused by electrochemical treatment and how these changes interact with stabilization reactions is needed. In addition, it is recommended to investigate the strength and leaching behavior in environments similar to the intended in situ conditions.

Fenton oxidation treatment of oxytetracycline fermentation residues: Harmless performance and bioresource properties

The pharmaceutical factories of oxytetracycline (OTC) massively produce OTC fermentation residues (OFRs). The high content of residual OTC and antibiotic resistance genes in OFRs must to be considered and controlled at an acceptable level. This study therefore investigated the applicability of Fenton oxidation in OTC degradation and resistant gene inactivation of OFRs. The results revealed that Fe²⁺ as catalyzer could very rapidly activate H₂O₂ to produce HO^•, leading to instantaneous degradation of OTC. The optimum conditions for OTC removal were 60 mM H₂O₂ and 140 mg/L Fe²⁺ under pH 7. After Fenton oxidation treatment, the release of water-soluble polysaccharides, NO₃-N, and PO₄-P was enhanced, whereas for proteins and NH₃-N were reduced. Three soluble fluorescence components (humic, tryptophan-like, and humic acid-like substances) were identified through fluorescence spectra with parallel factor analysis, and their reduction exceeded 50% after Fenton oxidation. There were twelve intermediates and three degradation pathways of OTC in OFRs during Fenton process. According to toxicity prediction, the comprehensive toxicity of OTC in OFRs was alleviated via Fenton oxidation treatment. In addition, Fenton oxidation showed the ability to reduce antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements, and even tetO, tetG, intI1, and intI2 were eliminated completely. These results suggested that Fenton oxidation treatment could be an efficient strategy for removing OTC and resistance genes in OFRs.

Nanomixture of 0-D ternary metal oxides (TiO2- SnO2-Al2O3) cooperating with 1-D hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanorods for RhB removal from synthetic wastewater and hydrogen evolution via water splitting

This work was carried out to devise a feasible alternative to remove cationic dyes from industrial wastewater. A nanomixture of (TiO₂-SnO₂-Al₂O₃) cooperating with Hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanorods was synthesized in this regard as a catalyst to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from aqueous medium. The physicochemical properties of the hydrothermally prepared Hydroxyapatite Nano Mixture (HNM) were revealed through XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, BET-BHJ, UV-Vis, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. The synthesized material which was found to be nanorods of average crystallite size 12.53 nm and BET Specific Surface area 60.81 m² g^-1 proved to be very effective for the removal of RhB at various pH conditions (acid, basic, and neutral). Maximum removal of 97% was achieved within 30 min of UV irradiation using 5 ppm RhB in acidic medium while at a higher concentration (20 ppm), it takes just 90 min to achieve 98% degradation of RhB under the same reaction conditions. A further catalytic potential of the prepared nanomixture for hydrogen (H₂) evolution via water splitting was explored where 129.45 μmol g^-1 of H₂ was evolved within 60 min. Our findings suggest that the prepared nanomixture could be used as an efficient catalyst for removing spent dyes used in industrial processes and also as a catalyst for hydrogen gas production.

Granular activated carbon-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles as an amendment for amending copper-contaminated sediments: Effect on the pH in sediments and enzymatic activities

The problem of heavy metal pollution in sediments attracts increasing attention with the process of industrialization. In this study, a novel sediments amendment granular activated carbon (GAC)-supported titanium dioxide nanoparticles (GATN) was synthesized to amend copper (Cu)-contaminated sediments. The effect of the amendments on the potential mobility and bioavailability of Cu was evaluated by the concentration of Cu in the overlying water and the chemical speciations of Cu in sediments. After 35 days of incubation, GATN and GAC were separated from the GATN-amended sediments and the GAC-amended sediments. The European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequence extraction procedure was performed on the separated sediments. Compared with the control group, the addition of 20% GATN amended sediments for 35 days, the Cu concentration in the overlying water decreased by 90.75%. Compared with original sediments, the exchangeable fraction and reducible fraction of Cu decreased from 42.30% to 17.36%-3.63% and 6.57%, respectively, and the oxidizable fraction and residual fraction of Cu increased from 13.57% to 26.77%-33.21% and 56.58%, respectively. The potential mobility and bioavailability of Cu were significantly reduced. According to the BCR sequence extraction results of the remaining sediments after the separation of the GATN, the Cu adsorbed on the GATN surface is mainly an oxidizable fraction, which is generated by the complexation reaction of hydroxyl (-OH) and Cu²⁺. Meanwhile, the present of GATN also can enhance the remediation capacity of sediments, which plays an important role during the amendment process. The pH was measured after GATN-amended sediments adding. Results showed that GATN improved their remediation capacity of sediments by optimizing the pH in sediments. The enzyme activity-experiment indicated that GATN effectively reduces the biological toxicity of Cu in Cu-contaminated sediments. Results verified that GATN, as a sediments amendment, has good application potential.

Using ESI FT-ICR MS to Characterize Dissolved Organic Matter in Salt Lakes with Different Salinity

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition in salt lakes is critical for water quality and aquatic ecology, and the salinization of salt lakes affects the DOM composition. To the best of our knowledge, no study has explored the effects of salinity on salt lake DOM composition at the molecular level. In this work, we selected Qinghai Lake (QHL) and Daihai Lake (DHL) as typical saline lakes. The two lakes have similar geographical and climatic conditions, and the salinity of QHL is higher than that of DHL. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry coupled with electrospray ionization was applied to compare the DOM molecular composition in the two lakes. At higher salinity, the DOM showed larger average molecular weight, higher oxidation degree, and lower aromaticity. Moreover, the proportion of DOM that is vulnerable to microbial degradation (e.g., lipids), photo-degradation (e.g., aromatic structures), or both processes (e.g., carbohydrates and unsaturated hydrocarbons) reduced at higher salinity. On the contrary, compounds that are refractory to microbial degradation (e.g., lignins/CRAM-like structures and tannins) or photo-degradation (e.g., aliphatic compounds) accumulated. Our study provides a useful and unique method to study DOM molecular composition in salt lakes with different salinity and is helpful to understand DOM transformation during the salinization of salt lakes.
