Abstract
Developing effective adsorbents for uranium extraction from natural seawater is strategically significant for the sustainable fuel supply of nuclear energy. Herein, stable and low-cost supramolecular complexes (PA-bPEI complexes) were facilely constructed through the assembly of phytic acid and hyperbranched polyethyleneimine based on the multiple modes of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The PA-bPEI complexes exhibited not only high uptake (841.7 mg g-1) and selectivity (uranium/vanadium selectivity = 84.1) toward uranium but also good antibacterial ability against biofouling. Mechanism analysis revealed that phosphate chelating groups and amine assistant groups coordinated the uranyl ions together with a high affinity. To be more suitable for practical applications, powdery PA-bPEI complexes were compounded with sodium alginate to fabricate various macroscopic adsorbents with engineered forms, which achieved an extraction capacity of 9.0 mg g-1 in natural seawater after 50 days of testing. Impressively, the estimated economic cost of the macroscopic adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater ($96.5 ∼ 138.1 kg-1 uranium) was lower than that of all currently available uranium adsorbents. Due to their good uranium extraction performance and low economic cost, supramolecular complex-based adsorbents show great potential for industrial uranium extraction from seawater.

Abstract
Films with high barrier, flame-retardant, and antibacterial properties are beneficial in terms of food and logistics safety. Herein, a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) of N-(2-hydroxyl)-propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC, chitosan derivative) and phytic acid (PA) was successfully prepared and then incorporated into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to fabricate a composite film with satisfactory barrier, fire-retardant, and antibacterial properties. The influence of HTCC/PA (HTPA) on the structural, physical and functional properties of the PVA matrix was investigated. Compared with the PVA film, PVA-HTPA6 film exhibited 3.38 times of flexibility and 83.33 % and 80.64 % of water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability, respectively. Benefiting from HTPA, the PVA-HTPA6 film exhibited outstanding flame-retardant capacity, with a high LOI value (33.30 %) and immediate self-extinguishing behaviour. Furthermore, the HTPA endowed the films with excellent antibacterial properties. Compared with other films, the PVA-HTPA6 film effectively maintained the quality of pork during storage at 4 °C for 9 days. Our findings indicate that the films are promising for packaging and logistics safety with oil-containing foods.

Abstract
One of the most dangerous types of pollution to the environment is oily wastewater, which is produced from a number of industrial sources and can cause damage to the environment, people, and creatures. To overcome this issue, membrane technology as an advanced method has been considered for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, high removal efficiency, and simplicity in scaling up. Membrane fouling, or the accumulation of oil droplets at or within the membrane pores, compromises the efficiency of membrane separation and water flux. In the last decade, the fabrication of membranes with specific wettability to reduce fouling has received much consideration. The purpose of this article is to offer a literature overview of all fabricated anti-fouling super(wetting and anti-wetting) membranes for applicable membrane processes for the separation of immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. In this review, we first explain membrane fouling and discuss methods for preventing it. Afterwards, in all membrane separation processes, including pressure-driven, gravity-driven, and thermal-driven, membranes based on the form and density of oil are categorized as oil-removing or water-removing with special wettability, and then their wettability modification with different materials is particularly discussed. Finally, the prospect of anti-fouling membrane fabrication in the future is presented.

Abstract
A facile and eco-friendly strategy is presented for synthesizing novel nanocomposites, with MoP quantum dots (QDs) as cores and graphitic carbon as shells, these nanoparticles are dispersed in a nitrogen and phosphorus-doped porous carbon and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) substrates (MoP@NPC/CNT). The synthesis involves self-assembling reactions to form single-source precursors (SSPs), followed by pyrolysis at 900 °C in an inert atmosphere to obtain MoP@NPC/CNT-900. The presence of carbon layers on the MoP QDs effectively prevents particle aggregation, enhancing the utilization of active MoP species. The optimized sample, MoP@NPC/CNT-900, exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). It demonstrates a low overpotential of 155 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , a small Tafel slope of 76 mV dec-1 , and sustained performance over 20 hours in 0.5 M H2 SO4 . Furthermore, the catalyst shows excellent activity in 1 M KOH, with a relatively low overpotential of 131 mV and long-term durability under constant current input. The exceptional HER activity can be attributed to several factors: the superior performance of MoP QDs, the large surface area and good conductivity of the carbon substrates, and the synergistic effect between MoP and carbon species.

Abstract
Due to their distinctive physical and chemical properties, emulsions are widely used in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food, energy, and oil. Emulsion preparation differs from one application to another due to the effect of multiple parameters that can control droplet size and stability. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of the effect of emulsion preparation on its stability and performance. The emulsion preparation protocols can directly affect dehydration efficiency and stability. Herein, we report the influence of preparation conditions on the properties of the formed emulsions; we investigated the effect of mixing time, speed, and mixer type on the synthetic crude oil emulsion's droplet size and dehydration efficiency.

Abstract
Oil/water mixtures from industrial and domestic wastewater adversely affect the environment and human beings. In this context, the development of a facile and improved separation method is crucial. Herein, dopamine was used as a bioadhesive to bind tea polyphenol (TP) onto the surface of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to form the first hydrophilic polymer network. Sodium periodate (NaIO4) is considered an oxidising agent for triggering self-polymerisation and can be used to introduce hydrophilic groups via surface manipulation to form the second hydrophilic network. In contrast to the individual polydopamine (PDA) and TP/NaIO4 composite coatings for a hydrophobic PVDF microfiltration membrane, a combination of PDA, TP, and NaIO4 has achieved the most facile treatment process for transforming the hydrophobic membrane into the hydrophilic state. The hierarchical superhydrophilic network structure with a simultaneous underwater superoleophobic membrane exhibited excellent performance in separating various oil-in-water emulsions, with a high water flux (1530 L.m-2 h-1.bar) and improved rejection (98%). The water contact angle of the modified membrane was 0° in 1 s. Moreover, the steady polyphenol coating was applied onto the surface, which endowed the membrane with an adequate antifouling and recovery capability and a robust durability against immersion in an acid, alkali, or salt solution. This facile scale-up method depends on in situ plant-inspired chemistry and has remarkable potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Petrochemical wastewater (PWW) is a huge industrial contaminant that generates a wide range of resistive and poisonous organic pollutants that harm animals and plants in natural water bodies when discharged untreated or partially treated. Therefore, it is vital to develop technologies that are simple, efficient, and profitable for the treatment of oily wastewater. Although much study has been undertaken on the treatment of PWW, there has not been any recent work on bibliometric analysis of global research trends on this issue. A bibliometric analysis will help current and future researchers figure out where the gaps are and how to fill them. The present study's focus is to examine the characteristics and trends of research on oily wastewater treatment with an emphasis on the treatment of PWW. This research was performed on five important aspects, including characterization of research publications, countries' performances and collaborations, an analysis of the best papers with the most citations, keyword analysis (including frequency distribution of the keyword analysis, the transformation of the keyword combination across time, and exploration of changes in rank over time), and journal analysis, according to the 2457 papers in the Science Citation Index Expanded using the Web of Science (WoS) database from 2000 to 2021. For further analysis, the contingency matrix, bump diagram, and inter-temporal network stream were employed.

Abstract
The separation of the emulsified oil/water is one of the critical environmental challenges. The PVDF membranes have been found helpful for separation, but rapid fouling makes them less attractive in treating oil-in-water emulsions. The design of antifouling membranes has become an area of deep interest. Herein, developing a novel modified PVDF ultrafiltration membrane was reported by doping the pyrrole and solidifying it in a ferric-containing coagulation bath, resulting in a unique nanotextured PVDF membrane (CCB-Fe/PPnp-PVDF) to separate the oil/water emulsions. The resultant CCB-Fe/PPnp-PVDF membrane was thoroughly characterized using the FTIR, FE-SEM, EDX, mapping, AFM, and contact analyzer. The hydrophilicity of the CCB-Fe/PPnp-PVDF was substantially improved, and the water contact angle was reduced from 81֯ ± 0.9֯ to 44֯ ± 1.7֯. The CCB-Fe/PPnp-PVDF membrane flux increased by 121% compared to the pristine PVDF membrane, with high separation efficiency of 99%. The hydrophilic nanotextured surface of the CCB-Fe/PPnp-PVDF membrane showed good antifouling behavior, with a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of more than 96%. Irreversible flux was just less than 4%. The high flux recovery ratio indicated that the nanotextured surface produced by the Fe/PPnp had prevented the blockage of the membrane pores and compact cake layer formation, which makes it an excellent membrane for oil/water emulsion separation. This strategy can be adopted for designing advanced membranes for separation applications.

Abstract
Developing an emulsion separation material with one-step in-situ purifying capability and improved security in applications, especially for subsequent scale-up, is valuable but remains a challenge. Herein, the amphiphilic sponge (PA@RGO@MS) was prepared via impregnation and in-situ growth of the negatively charged hydrophilic phytic acid (PA) and the hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on the surface of the melamine sponge (MS) and applied in emulsion purification. The mechanics, wettability, absorption performance of the PA@RGO@MS were analyzed to identify its potential for stable demulsification. Results show that the PA@RGO@MS could purify emulsions (turbidity removal rate = 99.7%; TOC removal rate = 94.14%) in-situ in one step by simple shock absorption, profited from the hydrophilic and demulsification capability of PA, oil absorption of RGO, and wide reaction and storage space of MS. Targeting the emulsion with distinct properties (density, viscosity, and concentration) of the oil phase, the PA@RGO@MS could efficiently enable the purification. Meanwhile, the powerful flame-retardant granted from PA ensures the safe shipment and storage of sponges. The favorable cyclability (turbidity removal rate > 98.5% and TOC removal rate > 89.5% after 10 cycles) and diversified operating modes enhance the practical value of the PA@RGO@MS.

Abstract
Design of charged materials for demulsification of ionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions is emerging in recent years. Herein, a superwetting stainless steel mesh with Janus surface charges (Janus SSM) was prepared by respectively brush-coating polyethyleneimine/aminated carbon nanotubes (PEI/CNTs-NH2) coating and polyacrylic acid (PAA) coating on its two sides. Two demulsification mechanisms, i.e., electrostatic attraction-repulsion and electrostatic repulsion-attraction based on the synergism of two oppositely charged sides were proposed. Combined with the superwettability and optimized pore size, the Janus SSM can successfully be used to demulsify, coalesce and separate emulsions. In detail, the Janus SSM exhibited separation efficiencies of up to 99.29%, 97.12% for SDS- and DTAC-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions respectively under the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism, and up to 97.10%, 98.57% under the electrostatic repulsion-attraction mechanism. The results indicated that the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism proposed in this study is conductive to achieving higher efficiency in emulsion separation. Furthermore, excellent durability extend the operation life of Janus SSM. This Janus SSM, which combines opposite charges on its two sides, may advance the development of charged materials for emulsion separation.

Abstract
Superwettable Janus membranes with unique interfacial characteristics have versatile applications in oil/water separation, microfluid transportation, and membrane distillation. However, it remains a significant challenge to simply fabricate three-dimensional (3D) metallic foams with Janus superwettability using a facile and environment-friendly method. In this study, a novel method is present to construct a Janus copper foam (CF) by combining superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity into CF. Based on gravity, the water in the light oil (LO)/water mixture can be transported from the superhydrophilic (SHL) side to the superhydrophobic (SHB) side, while the heavy oil (HO) in the HO/water/mixture can be transported from the SHB side to the SHL side. Therefore, cylindrical Janus oil/water separation devices with superior separation efficiency and excellent repeatability can achieve on-demand oil/water separation effortlessly. This design and fabrication method offers a novel avenue for the preparation of Janus interface materials for practical applications in liquid transportation, sensor devices, energy materials, and oil spills.

Abstract
Oily wastewater has become one of the leading causes of environmental pollution. A massive quantity of oily wastewater is released from industries, oil spills, and routine activities, endangering the ecosystem's sustainability. Due to the enormous negative impact, researchers put strenuous efforts into developing a sustainable solution to treat oily wastewater. Microfiltration/ultrafiltration membranes are considered an efficient solution to treat oily wastewater due to their low cost, small footprint, facile operation, and high separation efficiencies. However, membranes severely fouled during the separation process due to oil's adsorption and cake layer formation, which shortens the membranes' life. This review has critically discussed the microfiltration/ultrafiltration membrane synthesizing methods and their emulsion's separation performance. In the end, key challenges and their possible solutions are highlighted to provide future direction to synthesize next-generation membranes.

Abstract
A novel Janus sponge with the ability to remove complex contaminants from water is reported. Firstly, a superhydrophilic sponge (PA@PEI-sponge) is prepared via synthesizing negatively charged phytic acid@polyethyleneimine (PA@PEI) nanoparticles and assembling them on the surface of polydopamine (PDA) and PEI-modified polyurethane (PU) sponge through electrostatic adsorption. The Janus sponge is generated by modifying one side of the PA@PEI-sponge with PDMS, which exhibits superior separation efficiency and high filtration flux toward both water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions due to its multiplex selective wettability and the interconnected and tortuous 3D porous channels. The numerous negatively charged active sites of PA@PEI nanoparticles and PDA layer impart the superhydrophilic PA@PEI-sponge with the removal efficiency of 39.95 ± 0.27% for malachite green (MG) via simple flow-through filtration, which can be improved to 99.92 ± 0.07% by Janus modification. More importantly, the Janus sponge exhibits an excellent treatment capacity for complex mixtures containing emulsified oil and dye, with the separation efficiency above 99.59%. The Janus sponge also demonstrates the effective separation of real industrial wastewater collected from an acrylic dyeing plant. Together with a facile and green preparation strategy, this Janus sponge shows excellent application potential for simultaneous dye removal and oil/water emulsion separation.

Abstract
With regard to the treatment of multicomponent wastewaters, to construct multifunctional super-wetting membranes is highly attractive in current decade. In this work, a low-cost and novel NiFe2O4/TA/PVDF composite membrane was fabricated via a facile in-situ deposition method under vacuum system. In which, photo-response NiFe2O4 nanoparticles were immobilized on the surface of flexible PVDF base membrane via hydrophilic tannic acid (TA) as the binder. The resulting composite membrane exhibited a special superwettability of superamphilicity in air and underwater superoleophobicity with a nanoscale rough surface structure. One the one hand, NiFe2O4/TA/PVDF membrane can be used a reusable catalyst in Photo-Fenton degradation of organic dyes with high efficiency. On the other hand, the composite membrane can effectively separate emulsified oils from representative oil-in-water emulsions with excellent separation efficiency all above 99 % and relatively high flux (880-1525 Lm-2h-1 bar-1). More importantly, NiFe2O4/TA/PVDF composite membrane showed satisfactory processing efficiency, anti-fouling property and excellent reusability in deal with the mixed organic pollutants (water-insoluble emulsified oils and water-soluble organic dyes) existed in one aqueous system, which followed the procedure of initially photo-Fenton degradation of organic dyes emulsion and successively separation the remaining emulsion over the recovered membrane. This successful development of high-performance NiFe2O4/TA/PVDF composite membrane will provide a new candidate for both oil/water separation and organic wastewater treatment, as well as promote the utilization of spinel ferrites in the construction of multifunctional membrane for environmental purification.

Abstract
This research study investigated the synthesis of environmentally benign green emulsion liquid membrane (GELM) employing waste cooking oil (WCO) as diluent. The emulsion was prepared using D2EHPA as the carrier, Span 80 as surfactant, and sulphuric acid as internal/stripping agent. The influence of nine operating variables namely, Span 80 concentration, D2EHPA concentration, shaking time, shaking speed, pH of the feed, treat ratio (TR), H2SO4 concentration, lead concentration in feed, and volume ratio of organic phase to aqueous phase (O/A) on the performance of lead extraction was studied. Plackett Burman design (PBD), was employed for the screening of variables. The Pareto analysis shows that six variables were the most significant variables at the confidence level of 95%. The selected variables were then screened applying Box-Behnken design (BBD). The optimum values of the variables were: D2EHPA concentration - 4.6 (v/v%), Span 80 concentration - 2.14 (v/v%), pH of the feed - 4.4, internal phase (H2SO4) concentration - 2 M, initial lead concentration - 173 ppm, phase ratio (O/A) - 1.3. At these optimum conditions, a maximum lead extraction of 97.39% was obtained. The mechanism for the extraction of lead was analyzed. Reuse and recycling of membrane phase show that the GELM can be recycled for 7 cycles without reduction in lead extraction efficiency. Kinetic analysis of lead extraction was performed using zero, first, and second-order model at optimum condition. The experimental data fitted well with first-order (R2 - 0.9653). Thermodynamic studies indicated that the extraction procedure is endothermic, spontaneous in nature.

Abstract
This work reports on the production of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes by non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent and water as non-solvent. The influence of the processing conditions in the morphology, surface characteristics, structure, thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated for polymer dissolution temperatures between 25 and 150 °C and conditioning time between 0 and 10 min. Finger-like pore morphology was obtained for all membranes and increasing the polymer dissolution temperature led to an increase in the average pore size (≈0.9 and 2.1 µm), porosity (≈50 to 90%) and water contact angle (up to 80°), in turn decreasing the β PVDF content (≈67 to 20%) with the degree of crystallinity remaining approximately constant (≈56%). The conditioning time did not significantly affect the polymer properties studied. Thus, the control of NIPS parameters proved to be suitable for tailoring PVDF membrane properties.

A dual-functional layer modified GO@SiO 2 membrane with excellent anti-fouling performance for continuous separation of oil-in-water emulsion. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2021; 420:126681. Abstract
As the most significant target of membrane separation, the inadequacy of permeability and anti-fouling frequently constrain the application of the membrane in actual oily wastewater. Herein, a novel concept of membrane surface construction was proposed to mitigate this intractable problem, using SiO2 as the support layer and graphene oxide (GO) as the isolation layer. The best co-localization proportion of the support layer (56 mg/L) and isolation layer (3.5 mg/L) was determined by the separation performance of the modified membranes for the simulated emulsion. The thin GO layer could effectively prevent contaminants from entering the membrane pores without affecting its roughness. Based on the synergistic action of the isolation layer and support layer, the GO@SiO2 membrane could well implement emulsion purification with a stable permeability (654.11 LMHB) and high separation efficiency (99.41%). The superior anti-fouling performance of the membrane ensures its long-term cycling stability, with the permeability recovery rate of 89.75% (low-density oil) and 90.41% (high-density oil) after 10 repeated cycles. The storage stability also indirectly increases its value in practical applications. More importantly, the GO@SiO2 membrane also shows great potential for industrial emulsion treatment with excellent purification and cycling stability (permeability recovery rate of 84.01%).

Janus sand filter with excellent demulsification ability in separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions: An experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2021; 418:126346. [PMID: 34329000 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2021.126346] [Citation(s) in RCA: 6] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/20/2021] [Revised: 05/15/2021] [Accepted: 06/04/2021] [Indexed: 06/13/2023]
Abstract
Developing efficient separation materials for surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions is of great importance while significantly challenging. In this work, a sand filter with Janus channels was prepared by simply mixing superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic quartz sand in a mass ratio of 1:1. Due to the imbalanced force of droplets in those Janus channels, better separation performance under gravity was achieved for both surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions than the superhydrophilic or superhydrophobic sand filter alone. It also received high flux (1080.13 L m-2 h-1 for dichloroethane-in-water emulsion and 1378.07 L m-2 h-1 for water-in-dichloroethane emulsion) and high separation efficiency (99.80% for dichloroethane-in-water emulsion and 99.98% for water-in-dichloroethane emulsion). Molecular dynamics based computational work and experimental studies revealed that the Janus channels of mixed sand layer exhibited greater interaction energy with emulsion droplets for more efficient adsorption, resulting in better demulsification capability and separation performance. The as-prepared Janus sand filters retained excellent separation performance after 50 cycles of the stability test. Together with the needs on only cheap and easily accessible raw materials and its environmentally friendly preparation method, this Janus sand filtration process exhibits its great potential for the separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions.

Hydrogen peroxide treated g-C 3N 4 as an effective hydrophilic nanosheet for modification of polyethersulfone membranes with enhanced permeability and antifouling characteristics. CHEMOSPHERE 2021; 279:130616. Abstract
In this study, first, graphitic carbon nitride was treated with hydrogen peroxide (abbreviated as H2O2-g-C3N4), then was used as a new hydrophilic nanomaterial in the fabrication of polyethersulfone (PES) mixed matrix membrane (MMM) for improving flux, protein and dye separation efficiency and antifouling properties. The H2O2-g-C3N4 nanosheet was inserted into the doping solution to fabricate PES/H2O2-g-C3N4 nanocomposite membrane with the non-solvent induced phase inversion procedure. The results of the SEM and AFM images and also porosity and contact angle analysis were indicated that the modified membranes with H2O2-g-C3N4 had more porosity, smoother surface and more hydrophilic. Also, the influence of various weight percentage of H2O2-g-C3N4 was investigated systematically on the membrane performance. By blending of H2O2-g-C3N4 nanosheet in the membrane matrix, the permeability was raised from 4.1 (for bare membrane) to 30.1 L m-2 h-1 bar-1. Additionally, the effect of the H2O2-g-C3N4 material on the antifouling features indicated that the flux recover ratio of the H2O2-g-C3N4 MMMs was improved and the resistance parameters were reduced. Also, the effect of the H2O2-g-C3N4 material on the antifouling features indicated that the flux recover ratio of the H2O2-g-C3N4 MMMs was improved and the resistance parameters were reduced. Finally, the dye rejection efficiency of the nanocomposite membranes for Orange II and Reactive Yellow 168 was improved. As a result, it could be mentioned that the mixing low amount of H2O2-g-C3N4 in the membrane structure could significantly improve the membrane flux and antifouling properties without reduction in membrane rejection efficiency.
