Advanced applications of Zr-based MOFs in the removal of water pollutants

Bionanocomposite MIL-100(Fe)/Cellulose as a high-performance adsorbent for the adsorption of methylene blue

World production of dyes is estimated at more than 800,000 t·yr-1. The purpose of this research falls within the scope of the choice of an effective, local, and inexpensive adsorbent to remove dyes from wastewater. Adsorptive elimination of dyes by commonly accessible adsorbents is inefficient. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of porous materials offering exceptional properties as adsorbents by improving separation efficiency compared to existing commercial adsorbents. However, its powder form limits its applications. One way to overcome this problem is to trap them in a flexible matrix to form a hierarchical porous composite. Therefore, in this work, we prepared MIL-100 (Fe) embedded in a cellulose matrix named MIL-100(Fe)/Cell, and used it as an adsorbent of methylene blue (MB) dye. According to the BET analysis, the specific surface area of the synthesized MOF is 294 m2/g which is related to the presence of the cellulose as efficient and green support. The structure of this composite is approximately hexagonal. Adsorption was studied as a function of contact time, adsorbent mass and pollutant load (concentration), and pH, and the effect of each of them on absorption efficiency was optimized. The MIL-100(Fe)/Cell was capable of removing 98.94% of MB dye with an initial concentration of 150 mg/L within 10 min at pH = 6.5 and room temperature. The obtained maximum adsorption capacity was 384.615 mg/g. The adsorption isotherm is consistent with the Langmuir models. The mechanism of MB adsorption proceeds through п-п and electrostatic interactions.

A sulfonate ligand-defected Zr-based metal-organic framework for the enhanced selective removal of anionic dyes

In this work, we introduce a novel defective analogue of the representative 6-connected zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808), by employing 5-sulfoisophthalic acid monosodium salt (H2BTC-SO3Na) as a defect inducer via a mixed-linker approach. The structural integrity and different physicochemical properties were investigated by various characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen physisorption at 77 K. Additionally, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) were employed to confirm the presence of 6.9 mol% of the 5-sulfoisophthalate ligand within the highly crystalline MOF-808 structure. The defective material exhibited significant enhancements in the removal efficiency of various organic dyes, including approximately 64% and 77% for quinoline yellow and sunset yellow, and 56% and 13% for rhodamine B and malachite green, compared to its pristine counterpart. Importantly, the defective MOF-808 showed a remarkable selectivity toward anionic species in binary-component dyes comprising both anionic and cationic dyes.

The Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Water Treatment and Their Large-Scale Preparation: A Review

Over the last few decades, there has been a growing discourse surrounding environmental and health issues stemming from drinking water and the discharge of effluents into the environment. The rapid advancement of various sewage treatment methodologies has prompted a thorough exploration of promising materials to capitalize on their benefits. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as porous materials, have garnered considerable attention from researchers in recent years. These materials boast exceptional properties: unparalleled porosity, expansive specific surface areas, unique electronic characteristics including semi-conductivity, and a versatile affinity for organic molecules. These attributes have fueled a spike in research activity. This paper reviews the current MOF-based wastewater removal technologies, including separation, catalysis, and related pollutant monitoring methods, and briefly introduces the basic mechanism of some methods. The scale production problems faced by MOF in water treatment applications are evaluated, and two pioneering methods for MOF mass production are highlighted. In closing, we propose targeted recommendations and future perspectives to navigate the challenges of MOF implementation in water purification, enhancing the efficiency of material synthesis for environmental stewardship.

Comparative study of synthesis methods and pH-dependent adsorption of methylene blue dye on UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly promising adsorbents with notable properties such as elevated adsorption capacities and versatile surface design capabilities. This study introduces two distinct synthesis methods, one lasting 1 h and the other 24 h, for UiO-66 and NH2-UiO-66. While both methods yield structures with comparable crystallinity and morphology, the adsorption performance of the cationic methylene blue dye varies at different pH levels. Despite the 24 h synthesis time being optimal for maximum adsorption in both MOFs, the relative difference in NH2-UiO-66 adsorption percentage at different times suggests reduced dependency on synthesis time for this property. Notably, NH2-UiO-66 exhibits consistent and effective performance across three pH levels, warranting further investigation into its adsorption kinetics and isotherm. The achievement of high adsorption efficiency coupled with a significantly reduced synthesis time underscores the importance of developing simplified synthetic methods, essential for enhancing the practical applicability of MOFs in diverse applications.

Design and Advanced Manufacturing of NU-1000 Metal-Organic Frameworks with Future Perspectives for Environmental and Renewable Energy Applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a relatively new family of materials that attract lots of attention thanks to their unique features such as hierarchical porosity, active metal centers, versatility of linkers/metal nodes, and large surface area. Among the extended list of MOFs, Zr-based-MOFs demonstrate comparably superior chemical and thermal stabilities, making them ideal candidates for energy and environmental applications. As a Zr-MOF, NU-1000 is first synthesized at Northwestern University. A comprehensive review of various approaches to the synthesis of NU-1000 MOFs for obtaining unique surface properties (e.g., diverse surface morphologies, large surface area, and particular pore size distribution) and their applications in the catalysis (electro-, and photo-catalysis), CO2 reduction, batteries, hydrogen storage, gas storage/separation, and other environmental fields are presented. The review further outlines the current challenges in the development of NU-1000 MOFs and their derivatives in practical applications, revealing areas for future investigation.

Conversion of PET Bottle Waste into a Terephthalic Acid-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Removing Plastic Nanoparticles from Water

Micro- and nanoparticles of plastic waste are considered emerging pollutants with significant environmental and health impacts at high concentrations or prolonged exposure time. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a known metal-organic framework (MOF) using terephthalic acid (TPA) recovered from the hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle waste. This approach adds value to the existing large amounts of bottle waste in the environment. Fully characterized zinc-TPA MOF (MOF-5) was used for the extraction and removal of engineered polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanoparticles from water with a high efficiency of 97% and 95%, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm models for the adsorption of polymer nanoparticles (PNPs) on the MOF surface were investigated to understand the mechanism. The Qmax for PVC and PMMA NPs were recorded as 56.65 mg/g and 33.32 mg/g, respectively. MOF-5 was characterized before and after adsorption of PNPs on the surface of MOF-5 using a range of techniques. After adsorption, the MOF-5 was successfully regenerated and reused for the adsorption and removal of PNPs, showing consistent results for five adsorption cycles with a removal rate of 83-85%. MOF-5 was characterized before and after adsorption of PNPs on the surface using a range of techniques. The MOF-5 with PNPs on the surface was successfully regenerated and reused for the adsorption and removal of polymer nanoparticles, showing consistent results for five extraction cycles. As a proof of concept, MOF-5 was also used to remove plastic particles from commercially available body scrub gel solutions. Such methods and materials are needed to mitigate the health hazards caused by emerging micro- and nanoplastic pollutants in the environment.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

New Three-Dimensional Supramolecular Framework: Crystal Structure and Photocatalytic Property

In this work, benzimidazole (Hbim) and Cu(II) ions ligands were chosen as building blocks to produce a novel Cu(II) compound (CP) based on {Cu4O}cluster, namely, [Cu4OCl6(Hbim)4]n·n(H2O)·2n(EtOH) (1). The investigation of SCXRD reveals that the CP 1 is a separated 0D structure based on tetrahedral {Cu4O} clusters. Furthermore, this supramolecular frame displayed superior photocatalytic effect on the photodegradation of MB under UV light irradiation.

Effect of Linker Substituent Nature on Performance of Active Sites in UiO-66: Combined FT-IR and DFT Study

The nature of organic linker substituents plays an important role in gas sorption and separation as well as in catalytic applications of metal-organic frameworks. Zirconium-based UiO-66 is one of the most tunable members of this class of materials. However, the prediction of its properties is still not a fully solved problem. Here, the infrared spectroscopic measurements using highly sensitive CO probe molecules, combined with DFT calculations, are used in order to characterize the performance of different acidic sites caused by the presence of different organic linker substituents. The proposed model allowed differentiation between various active sites over the UiO-66 and clarification of their behavior. The experimental IR bands related to CO adsorption can be unambiguously assigned to one type of site or another. The previously undescribed highly red-shifted band is attributed to CO adsorbed on coordinatively unsaturated zirconium sites through an O atom. The results confirm the lower and higher Lewis's acidity of coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites on linker defects in the UiO-66 structure when electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups are, respectively, included in a terephthalate moiety, whilst the Brønsted acidity of zirconium oxo-cluster remains almost unchanged.

Sulfate Radical-Based Degradation of Organic Pollutants: A Review on Application of Metal-Organic Frameworks as Catalysts

The degradation of organic pollutants present in domestic and industrial effluents is a matter of concern because of their high persistence and ecotoxicity. Recently, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are being emphasized for organic pollutant removal from effluents, as they have shown higher degradation efficiencies when compared to conventional activated sludge processes. Sulfate radical-based methods are some of the AOPs, mainly carried out using persulfate (PS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which have gained attention due to the ease of sulfate radical generation and the effective degradation of organic molecules. PMS is gaining more popularity because of its high reactivity and ability to generate excess sulfate radicals. PMS has been the major focus; therefore, its mechanism has been explained, and limitations have been elaborated. The involvement of metal-organic frameworks for PMS/PS activation applied to organic pollutant removal and recent advances in the application of biochar and hydrogel-assisted metal-organic frameworks have been discussed.

A robust ultra-microporous cationic aluminum-based metal-organic framework with a flexible tetra-carboxylate linker

Al-based cationic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are uncommon. Here, we report a cationic Al-MOF, MIP-213(Al) ([Al₁₈(μ₂-OH)₂₄(OH₂)₁₂(mdip)₆]6Cl·6H₂O) constructed from flexible tetra-carboxylate ligand (5,5'-Methylenediisophthalic acid; H₄mdip). Its crystal structure was determined by the combination of three-dimensional electron diffraction (3DED) and high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction. The structure is built from infinite corner-sharing chains of AlO₄(OH)₂ and AlO₂(OH)₃(H₂O) octahedra forming an 18-membered rings honeycomb lattice, similar to that of MIL-96(Al), a scarce Al-polycarboxylate defective MOF. Despite sharing these structural similarities, MIP-213(Al), unlike MIL-96(Al), lacks the isolated μ₃-oxo-bridged Al-clusters. This leads to an ordered defective cationic framework whose charge is balanced by Cl^- sandwiched between two Al-trimers at the corner of the honeycomb, showing strong interaction with terminal H₂O coordinated to the Al-trimers. The overall structure is endowed by a narrow quasi-1D channel of dimension ~4.7 Å. The Cl^- in the framework restrains the accessibility of the channels, while the MOF selectively adsorbs CO₂ over N₂ and possesses high hydrolytic stability.

Sustainable functionalized smectitic clay-based nano hydrated zirconium oxides for enhanced levofloxacin sorption from aqueous medium

In this study, the functionalized smectitic clay (SC)-based nanoscale hydrated zirconium oxide (ZrO-SC) was successfully synthesized and utilized for the adsorptive removal of levofloxacin (LVN) from an aqueous medium. The synthesized ZrO-SC and its precursors (SC and hydrated zirconium oxide (ZrO(OH)₂)) were extensively characterized using various analytical methods to get insight into their physicochemical properties. The results of stability investigation confirmed that ZrO-SC composite is chemically stable in strongly acidic medium. The surface measurements revealed that ZrO impregnation to SC resulted in an increased surface area (six-fold higher than SC). The maximum sorption capacity of ZrO-SC for LVN was 356.98 and 68.87 mg g^-1 during batch and continuous flow mode studies, respectively. The mechanistic studies of LVN sorption onto ZrO-SC revealed that various sorption mechanisms, such as interlayer complexation, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction, and surface complexation were involved. The kinetic studies of ZrO-SC in the continuous-flow mode indicated the better applicability of Thomas model. However, the good fitting of Clark model suggested the multi-layer sorption of LVN. The cost estimation of the studied sorbents was also assessed. The obtained results indicate that ZrO-SC is capable of removing LVN and other emergent pollutants from water at a reasonable cost.

Phenylboronic acid-functionalized magnetic metal-organic framework nanoparticles for magnetic solid phase extraction of five benzoylurea insecticides

This research involves the construction of a phenylboronic acid-functionalized magnetic UiO-66 metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticle (CPBA@UiO-66@Fe₃O₄). Its design is primarily for the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of benzoylurea insecticides. An organic ligand, 2-amino terephthalic acid (2-ATPA), facilitated the introduction of amino groups while keeping the original crystal structure of UiO-66 intact. The constructed UiO-66 MOF showcases a porous structure and extensive surface area, thereby providing an optimal platform for further functionalization. The employment of 4-carboxylphenylboronic acid as a modifier notably amplified the extraction efficiency for benzoylureas. This improvement was due to the formation of B-N coordination and other secondary interactions. By integrating this with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), we established a quantitative analytical method for benzoylurea insecticides. This method achieved a wide linear range (2.5-500 μg L^-1 or 5-500 μg L^-1), satisfactory recoveries (83.3-95.1%), and acceptable limits of detection (LODs: 0.3-1.0 μg L^-1). The developed method proved successful when applied to six tea infusion samples, representing China's six major tea categories. Semi-fermented and light-fermented tea samples demonstrated relatively higher spiking recoveries.

Genetic algorithm-assisted artificial neural network modelling for remediation and recovery of Pb (II) and Cr(VI) by manganese and cobalt spinel ferrite super nanoadsorbent

MnFe₂O₄ and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were hydrothermally synthesized to examine their capability in adsorption of Pb (II) and Cr (VI). The adsorbents exhibited a high rate of adsorption, reaching 90% of their adsorption capacity in less than 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption capability of the Magnetic Nanoparticles (MNPs) was noticeably greater at initial pollutant concentrations smaller than 40 mg/L. Maximum adsorption capacity on MnFe₂O₄ and CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles were 40 and 25.38 mg/g for Cr (VI) and 523.32 and 476.19 mg/g for Pb (II), respectively. A data-driven model of Artificial Neural Network was used for prediction of adsorption capacity at both equilibrium and non-equilibrium condition. The model parameters including the numbers of neuron (n = 7) and data portioning for training (49.5%), validation (40.5%), and testing (10%) were obtained using Genetic Algorithm. The results indicated that the model could predict the data with high accuracy (R² = 0.998). The input parameters were initial concentration, time, pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and other parameters that is dependent to the physico-chemical properties of ions and adsorbents' surface (ε, α₁, α₂). The mechanism involved in Cr(VI) and Pb(II) adsorption are electrostatic physisorption and a combination of ion exchange chemisorption and electrostatic physisorption, respectively. Desorption capability and adsorbent reuse capability were also examined.

Comparative study for removal of cationic and anionic dyes using alginate-based hydrogels filled with citric acid-sawdust/UiO-66-NH2 hybrid

Nowadays, a big challenge is developing a sustainable and effective method for removing contaminants like dyes from aqueous solutions. In this regard, Zr-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂) and sawdust as the ideal adsorbents were used. Due to their low separation in adsorption processes, embedding into alginate and obtaining composite beads are suggested as a suitable strategy. The achieved Ca-alginate/citric acid (CA)-sawdust/UiO-66-NH₂ hydrogel beads were used to compare cationic and anionic dyes removal. This sorbent indicated an excellent selectivity for removing methylene blue versus methyl orange in a binary system. pH = 6, adsorbent amount = 80 mg, methylene blue concentration = 10 mg/L, and contact time = 420 min were achieved as optimal parameters on methylene blue adsorption with an adsorption capacity of about 26 mg/g. The removal process of methylene blue followed linear Freundlich isotherm and nonlinear pseudo-2nd-order kinetic models. The regeneration test demonstrated methylene blue removal efficiency higher than about 89 % after 9 cycles. According to the outcomes, methylene blue could be attached to the adsorbent surface through the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions of the aromatic rings. These results confirm the potential of Ca-alginate/CA-sawdust/UiO-66-NH₂ hydrogel beads as a selective bio-sorbent for cationic dye removal.

Perspectives of nanomaterials in microbial remediation of heavy metals and their environmental consequences: A review

Nanomaterials (NMs) have diverse applications in various sectors, such as decontaminating heavy metals from drinking water, wastewater, and soil. Their degradation efficiency can be enhanced through the application of microbes. As microbial strain releases enzymes, which leads to the degradation of HMs. Therefore, nanotechnology and microbial-assisted remediation-based methods help us develop a remediation process with practical utility, speed, and less environmental toxicity. This review focuses on the success achieved for the bioremediation of heavy metals by nanoparticles and microbial strains and in their integrated approach. Still, the use of NMs and heavy metals (HMs) can negatively affect the health of living organisms. This review describes various aspects of the bioremediation of heavy materials using microbial nanotechnology. Their safe and specific use supported by bio-based technology paves the way for their better remediation. We discuss the utility of nanomaterials for removing heavy metals from wastewater, toxicity studies and issues to the environment with their practical implications. Nanomaterial assisted heavy metal degradation coupled with microbial technology and disposal issues are described along with detection methods. Environmental impact of nanomaterials is also discussed based on the recent work conducted by the researchers. Therefore, this review opens new avenues for future research with an impact on the environment and toxicity issues. Also, applying new biotechnological tools will help us develop better heavy metal degradation routes.

In-situ construction of Zr-based metal-organic framework core-shell heterostructure for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Photocatalysis is an eco-friendly promising approach to the degradation of textile dyes. The majority of reported studies involved remediation of dyes with an initial concentration ≤50 mg/L, which was away from the existing values in textile wastewater. Herein, a simple solvothermal route was utilized to synthesize CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 core-shell heterojunction photocatalyst for the first time. The photocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized catalysts was assessed through the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) dyes at an initial concentration (100 mg/L). Under simulated solar irradiation, improved photocatalytic performance was accomplished by as-obtained CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 heterojunction compared to bare UiO-66 and CoFe₂O₄. The overall removal efficiency of dyes (100 mg/L) over CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66 (50 mg/L) reached >60% within 180 min. The optical and photoelectrochemical measurements showed an enhanced visible light absorption capacity as well as effective interfacial charge separation and transfer over CoFe₂O₄@UiO-66, emphasizing the successful construction of heterojunction. The degradation mechanism was further explored, which revealed the contribution of holes (h⁺), superoxide (•O₂ ^-), and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in the degradation process, however, h⁺ were the predominant reactive species. This work might open up new insights for designing MOF-based core-shell heterostructured photocatalysts for the remediation of industrial organic pollutants.

Versatile crosslinking synthesis of an EDTA-modified UiO-66-NH2/cotton fabric composite for simultaneous capture of heavy metals and dyes and efficient degradation of organophosphate

The metal-organic frameworks/cotton fabric composites (MOFs/CFCs) have emerged as a new type of prospective materials for environmental cleanup, due to their convenient recyclability and high removal efficiency towards hazardous pollutants. However, their practical applications are limited by complicated synthetic conditions, insufficient interface bonding and poor adsorption capacity. Herein, for the first time, a robust ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-functionalized MOFs/CFC is prepared based on UiO-66-NH₂ crystals by using EDTA dianhydride as the cross-linking agent, and applied for simultaneous removal of heavy metals and dyes, as well as degradation of chemical warfare agents. The as-prepared EDTA-UiO-66-NH₂/CFC shows extraordinary monocomponent adsorption performance with maximum adsorption capacity of 158.7, 126.2, 131.5, 117.4 and 104.5 mg/g for Cd(II), Cu(II), methylene blue, crystal violet and safranin O, respectively. Interestingly, in metal-dyes binary system, the uptake of Cu(II) by EDTA-UiO-66-NH₂/CFC increases significantly when co-existing high concentration of dyes. The results indicate that the synergistic and simultaneous removal of both dyes and metal from complex systems can be realized by EDTA-UiO-66-NH₂/CFC via multiple mechanisms. The EDTA-UiO-66-NH₂/CFC also exhibits an outstanding catalytic performance for degrading dimethyl 4-nitrophenylphosphate. Besides, it can be reused for several times without obvious decrease of its adsorption and catalysis efficiencies. More impressively, the cross-linking reaction approach can not only anchor UiO-66-NH₂ crystals firmly onto cotton fabric, but also facilitate in-situ formation of abundant adsorption sties on the adsorbent surface. Therefore, this work offers a simple and versatile synthetic strategy to develop high-performance environmental material for multiple pollutants remediation.

Metal-porphyrinic framework nanotechnologies in modern agricultural management

Metal-porphyrinic frameworks are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These porous materials exhibit a large number of applications for sustainable development and related environmental considerations. Their attractive features include (1) as a free base or metalated with zinc(II) or iron(II or III), they are environmentally benign, and (2) they absorb visible light and are emissive and semi-conducting, making them convenient tools for sensing agrochemicals. But the key feature that makes these nano-sized pristine materials or their composites in many ways superior to most MOFs is their ability to photo-generate reactive oxygen species with visible light, including singlet oxygen. This review describes important issues related to agriculture, including controlled delivery of pesticides and agrochemicals, detection of pesticides and pathogenic metals, elimination of pesticides and toxic metals, and photodynamic antimicrobial activity, and has an important implication for food safety. This comprehensive review presents the progress of the rather rapid developments of these functional and increasingly nano-sized materials and composites in the area of sustainable agriculture.

Determination of pyrethroids in water samples by dispersive solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography

A metal-organic framework UiO-66 was prepared and used as a sorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction combined with high-performance liquid chromatography (DSPE-HPLC) for extracting and determining four pyrethroids in water samples for the first time. The as-synthesized material was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis. In addition, several important parameters affecting DSPE efficiency, including sorbent dosage, extraction time, salt concentration, pH, elution solvent, elution volume, and elution time, were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the UiO-66 based on the DSPE-HPLC method displayed a wide linear range (10-1000 ng/ml), low limits of detection (2.8-3.5 ng/ml), and good precision (relative standard deviations [RSDs] < 3%) for the four pyrethroids. The recoveries at different spiked levels ranged from 89.3% to 107.7%. In addition, UiO-66 featured good reusability and reproducibility. The results demonstrated that π-π stacking interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and van der Waals forces between UiO-66 and the four pyrethroids played a crucial role in the adsorption process. Meanwhile, the maximum extraction capability could be obtained within 5 min. Thus, the DSPE coupled with the UiO-66 sorbent can be successfully used in the analysis of four pyrethroids in environmental water samples. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Simultaneous determination of four pyrethroids using the developed UiO-66-based DSPE-HPLC method in water samples. The developed method had a short enrichment time, broad linear ranges, a low detection limit, and high enrichment factor. It is showed that π-π stacking interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and van der Waals forces were the main mechanism.

Recent Progress in Aptamer-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Optical and Electrochemical Sensors for Detection of Mycotoxins

Mycotoxin contamination in foodstuffs and agricultural products has posed a serious hazard to human health and raised international concern. The progress of cost-effective, facile, rapid and reliable analytical tools for mycotoxin determination is in urgent need. In this regard, the potential utility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a class of crystalline porous materials has sparked immense attention due to their large specific surface area, adjustable pore size, nanoscale framework structure and good chemical stability. The amalgamation of MOFs with high-affinity aptamers has resulted in the progress of advanced aptasensing methods for clinical and food/water safety diagnosis. Aptamers have many advantages over classical approaches as exceptional molecular recognition constituents for versatile bioassays tools. The excellent sensitivity and selectivity of the MOF-aptamer biocomposite nominate them as efficient lab-on-chip tools for portable, label-free, cost-effective and real-time screening of mycotoxins. Current breakthroughs in the concept, progress and biosensing applications of aptamer functionalized MOFs-derived electrochemical and optical sensors for mycotoxins have been discussed in this study. We first highlighted an overview part, which provides some insights into the functionalization mechanisms of MOFs with aptamers, offering a foundation to create MOFs-based aptasensors. Then, we discuss various strategies to design high-performance MOFs-based aptamer scaffolds, which serve as either signal nanoprobe carriers or signal nanoprobes and their applications. We perceived that applications of optical aptamers are in their infancy in comparison with electrochemical MOFs-derived aptasensors. Finally, current challenges and prospective trends of MOFs-aptamer sensors are discussed.

Stable magnetic CoZn/N-doped polyhedron with self-generating carbon nanotubes for highly efficient removal of bisphenols from complex wastewaters

Bisphenols have extensively been found in various environmental matrices and caused public concerns due to their endocrine-disrupting potential. Herein, we developed a ZIF-67@ZIF-8-derived CoZn/nitrogen-doped carbon (CoZn/NC) as a robust adsorbent for bisphenols in wastewaters. The self-generating carbon nanotubes and the open metal sites provided sufficient adsorption sites. The Co component endowed the derivative with strong magnetism facilitating its separation from water. CoZn/NC exhibited exceeding water stability in pH 3 - 12 solution and withstood water up to 15 days. The great applicability of CoZn/NC was validated with 16 real wastewaters from different sources (recoveries exceeding 97.9%). Fast adsorption kinetics were observed with removal efficiencies above 96.5% within 1 min. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Langmuir model, with adsorption capacities of 222, 200, 193, and 321 mg g^-1 for bisphenol A, bisphenol F, bisphenol S, and bisphenol AF, respectively. Variations in external conditions, including pH 3 - 9, humic acid (50 mg L^-1), and NaCl (0.1 mol L^-1), had negligible impacts on the adsorption process. The characterizations and density functional theory computation demonstrated that electrostatic, hydrophobic, π - π, and cation- π interactions are the driving forces in this system. The as-prepared CoZn/NC exhibits great promise in real wastewater treatment.

Supramolecular Mn(III) Coordination Polymer with Treatment Activity on Diabetic Retinopathy

A new Mn(III) coordination polymer formulated as [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2]n (1, H2L is 2,2′-bipyridyl-6,6′-dicarboxylic acid; DMF is N,N′-dimethylformamide) was solvothermally prepared using Mn(ClO4)2 · 6H2O, H2L, and (CH3)4NCl as raw materials. The assay of SCXRD for 1 suggests that it features a 0D isolated dinuclear [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2] structure that exists in P-1 with triclinic system, and the cell parameters are a = 8.4593(2), b = 9.4675(5), c = 11.0147(6) Å, α = 86.023(3), β = 74.892(6), γ = 78.055(4)°, V = 833.11(7) Å3, and Z = 1. These isolated 0D dinuclear [Mn2(L)2Cl2(DMF)2] motifs were extended into a 1D supramolecular chain via the connection of intermolecular C–H…Cl together with the C–H…O H bond. Furthermore, the novel CP’s treatment activity against the diabetic retinopathy was investigated, and the associated mechanism of the new compound was discussed.

Progress in Hybridization of Covalent Organic Frameworks and Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hybrid materials are a class of porous crystalline materials that integrate MOFs and COFs with hierarchical pore structures. As an emerging porous frame material platform, MOF/COF hybrid materials have attracted tremendous attention, and the field is advancing rapidly and extending into more diverse fields. Extensive studies have shown that a broad variety of MOF/COF hybrid materials with different structures and specific properties can be synthesized from diverse building blocks via different chemical reactions, driving the rapid growth of the field. The allowed complementary utilization of π-conjugated skeletons and nanopores for functional exploration has endowed these hybrid materials with great potential in challenging energy and environmental issues. It is necessary to prepare a "family tree" to accurately trace the developments in the study of MOF/COF hybrid materials. This review comprehensively summarizes the latest achievements and advancements in the design and synthesis of MOF/COF hybrid materials, including COFs covalently bonded to the surface functional groups of MOFs (MOF@COF), MOFs grown on the surface of COFs (COF@MOF), bridge reaction between COF and MOF (MOF+COF), and their various applications in catalysis, energy storage, pollutant adsorption, gas separation, chemical sensing, and biomedicine. It concludes with remarks concerning the trend from the structural design to functional exploration and potential applications of MOF/COF hybrid materials.

Construction of a New 3D Cu(II) Compound with Photocatalytic Activity and Therapeutic Effect on Ventriculitis

A new Cu(II) compound, that is {[Cu(L)(ClO4)(H2O)(CH3CN)](ClO4)}n (1, L is 4-(furan-2-yl)-2,6-bis(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine), was solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. It features a 0D isolated unit, and these 0D isolated units are further hydrogen-bonded into a 3D supramolecular framework. The framework of 1 can be stable up to 284°C, and the optical band gap of 1 is 3.71 eV. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, complex 1 as a photocatalyst exhibits high activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation in the water solution. The above compound’s inhibitory activity on the inflammatory cytokines releasing was tested through exploiting ELISA detection. The real time RT-PCR was conducted to assess the compound’s suppression on the expression of bacterial survival gene.

Construction and evaluation of detachable bone-targeting MOF carriers for the delivery of proteasome inhibitors

Tumor bone metastasis is an important cause of tumor recurrence and death. Although bone-targeting nanoparticles decorated with targeting ligands have shown good affinity for bone tissues with the properties of adhesion to the bone matrix, it is not easy to detach from the surface of the bone matrix in the tumor-bone microenvironment, attributed to the robust coordination force between the targeting ligands, such as bisphosphates with bone-deposited calcium. This may hinder the transport of nanoparticles from bone tissue to bone metastatic tumors. In this research, we designed a bone-targeting nanocarrier with detachable bone-targeting character for the therapy of bone metastases. The nanoparticles were constructed by using ZIF-8 and bone-targeting and MMP enzyme sensitive polypeptide-modified hyaluronic acid as a carrier and proteasome inhibitor Bortezomib (BTZ) as cargo. The results show that the constructed D8-M3-HA-ZIF8@BTZ nanoparticles possessed several favorable properties such as good colloidal stability, acid-sensitive drug release, D8 peptide mediated bone targeting and MMP enzyme-responsive desorption. Besides, nanoparticle endocytosis and cytotoxicity were enhanced through HA-mediated targeting to CD44 over-expressing tumor cells. Altogether, this study provides a potential cascade targeting strategy for improving the delivery effects of bone targeted nanoparticles for the delivery of proteasome inhibitors.

New 3D Supramolecular Framework: Photocatalytic Property and Therapeutic Activity on Orbital Wall Fracture

Coordination compounds have undergone booming development in the past 20 years for their applications as multifunctional materials in the field of catalysis and biomedicine. To create compounds with both catalytic and bioactive properties, we selected Cu(II) ion and benzimidazole (Hbim) ligand as the building blocks to fabricate a new cluster-based Cu(II) compound [Cu4OCl6(Hbim)4]n·n(H2O)·2n(EtOH) (1). The exploration of single crystal X-ray diffraction exhibits that complex 1 is a 0D isolated structure on the basis of tetrahedral {Cu4O} clusters. Moreover, such supramolecular framework not only shows excellent photocatalytic effect for the MB photodegradation under the irradiation of ultraviolet light but also has the application values against orbital wall fracture. This work gives new insights on the creation of coordination polymers which might be potentially used as photocatalytic and bioactive reagents.

MIL series of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as novel adsorbents for heavy metals in water: A review

With large specific surface area, abundant adsorption sites, flexible pore structure, and good water stability, Materials of Institute Lavoisier frameworks (MILs) have attracted increasing attention as effective environmental adsorbents. This review systematically analyzes and recapitulates recent progress in the synthesis and application of MIL-based adsorbents for the removal of aqueous heavy metal ions. Commonly used solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical syntheses of MILs are first summarized and compared. Instead of focusing on adsorption process parameters, adsorption performances and governing mechanisms of virgin MILs, functional MILs, MIL-based composites, and carbonized MILs to representative metal(loid) ions (chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury) in water under various conditions are then systematically reviewed and discussed. In the end, this work also outlines prospects and future directions to promote the applications of MILs in treating heavy metal contaminated water.

Removal of Acidic Organic Ionic Dyes from Water by Electrospinning a Polyacrylonitrile Composite MIL101(Fe)-NH2 Nanofiber Membrane

A nanofiber metal–organic framework filter, a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber membrane composite with an iron/2-amino-terephthalic acid-based metal–organic framework (MIL101(Fe)-NH₂), was prepared by one-step electrospinning. MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ was combined into the polymer nanofibers in situ. PAN-MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ composite nanofiber membranes (NFMs) were prepared from a homogeneous spinning stock containing MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ prebody fluid and PAN. Crystallization of MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ and solidification of the polymer occurred simultaneously during electrospinning. The PAN-MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ composite NFM showed that MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ was uniformly distributed throughout the nanofiber and was used to adsorb and separate acidic organic ionic dyes from the aqueous solution. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ crystals were effectively bonded in the PAN nanofiber matrix, and the crystallinity of MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ crystals remained good, while the distribution was uniform. Owing to the synergistic effect of PAN and the MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ crystal, the PAN-MIL101(Fe)-NH₂ composite NFM showed a fast adsorption rate for acidic ionic dyes. This study provides a reference for the rapid separation and purification of organic ionic dyes from wastewater.

Bimetallic Cd/Zr-UiO-66 material as a turn-on/off probe for As5+/Fe3+ in organic media

In this work, a series of bimetallic Cd/Zr-UiO-66 materials were successfully synthesized for fluorescence sensing toward traces of As⁵⁺ and Fe³⁺ via a one-pot method. Interestingly, the obtained bimetallic Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) can be served as turn-on probe for As⁵⁺ as well as turn-off probe for Fe³⁺. The LODs of Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) toward As⁵⁺ and Fe³⁺ were calculated to be 5.4 μM and 4.3 μM, respectively, indicating its effective sensing properties for As⁵⁺ and Fe³⁺ in methanol media. Moreover, even in the presence of other potentially interfering toxic metal ions such as As³⁺, Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺, Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) still presented good anti-interference abilities. Additionally, the removal efficiency of Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) toward As⁵⁺ was higher than 70% when the initial As⁵⁺ was lower than 50 mg/L. The fluorescence quenching of Fe³⁺ were mainly due to the competitive absorption of excitation source and RET, while the ACE mechanism was mostly responsible for the enhancement of As⁵⁺. More importantly, this job might pave the way for future researches and applications on sensing As⁵⁺ and Fe³⁺.

The Carboxyl Functionalized UiO-66-(COOH)2 for Selective Adsorption of Sr2

Efficient and selective removal of 90Sr is an important process for the safe use of nuclear energy. Herein, we investigate and assess the Sr2+ adsorption properties of a metal-organic framework UiO-66-(COOH)2 functionalized by non-bonded carboxylic groups. This MOF is an exciting class of free carboxylic functionalized MOFs that combine chemical stability with gas sorption, dye elimination, and conductivity. Specifically, we show that uniformly distributed carboxyl and water stability make it accessible for loading Sr2+ without structural changes. The FTIR spectroscopy, PXRD analysis, XPS, and SEM-EDS studies show excellent stability as well as the strong affinity between -COOH active site and Sr2+. This strong coordination interaction guarantees a high adsorption capacity of 114 mg g-1 within 5 h (pH 5 and 298 K). Combined kinetic and thermodynamic studies show that the surface complexation is strong chemisorption and cost-effective spontaneous process (ΔG = -5.49 kJ mol-1~-2.16 kJ mol-1). The fact that UiO-66-(COOH)2 not only possesses a high adsorption capacity, but also enables selectivity to Sr2+ in the presence of similar radius ions Na+ and K+, prefigures its great potential for the practical treatment of radioactive Sr2+ in polluted water.

Cerium-doped MIL-101-NH2(Fe) as superior adsorbent for simultaneous capture of phosphate and As(V) from Yangzonghai coastal spring water

A series of novel cerium-doped MIL-101-NH₂ materials were synthesized using the solvothermal method for the simultaneous efficient removal of phosphate and As(V). According to the characterization results, cerium was successfully loaded onto MIL-101-NH₂ and that Ce-MOFs might be generated during the loading process, which modified the crystal structure of MIL-101-NH₂ and resulted in MOFs with different microstructures. In single-uptake systems containing only phosphate or As(V), isothermal adsorption experiments showed that 1Ce-MIL-101-NH₂ exhibited better adsorption properties of phosphate and As(V) than MIL-101-NH₂. Furthermore, the uptake amounts of phosphate and As(V) reached 341.5 mg/g and 249 mg/g, respectively. Superior uptake amounts for binary phosphate (167.36 mg/g) and As(V) (87.55 mg/g) were achieved with 1Ce-MIL-101-NH₂. Kinetic experiments revealed a higher uptake rate of phosphate than of As(V). FT-IR and XPS analyses showed that the main mechanism for the removal of phosphate and As(V) from water by 1Ce-MIL-101-NH₂ was the formation of an Fe/CeOP inner complex through ligand complexation and electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, 1Ce-MIL-101-NH₂ exhibited high selectivity and excellent efficiency in removing phosphate and As(V) in contaminated spring water in the presence of competing anions; this further confirms the application potential of the novel adsorbent.

Simple Design Concept for Dual-Channel Detection of Ochratoxin A Based on Bifunctional Metal-Organic Framework

A simple fluorescence and electrochemical dual-channel biosensor based on bifunctional Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF) was proposed to detect Ochratoxin A (OTA). The bifunctional Zr-MOF, with photoluminescence properties and enormous electroactive ligands, was exploited to load OTA-specific aptamers for designing signal probes, greatly simplifying the probe-fabrication process and improving sensing reliability. Upon specific recognition of aptamer toward OTA, the anchored probe was released from the sensing interface into the reaction solution. In this circumstance, the increased amount of the signal probe in reaction solution led to an enhanced fluorescence response, while the decreased amount of the signal probe on the sensing interface resulted in a diminished electrochemical response. According to the dual-channel signal change with increasing OTA concentration, the visual fluorescence strategy was established for intuitive OTA detection, and meanwhile, sensitive electrochemical assay with a detection limit of 0.024 pg/mL was also achieved with the help of one-step electrodeposition as a sensing platform. Moreover, the proposed dual-channel assay has been successfully applied to determine OTA levels in corn samples with rapid response, superior accuracy, and high anti-interference capability, providing a promising method for food safety monitoring.

NH2NH-MOF: a reaction matrix for the specific determination of small aldehydes by MALDI-MS

Efficient determination of aldehydes by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is hampered mainly by the low mass and unstable nature of analytes. In the present work, we propose a combined strategy of a reactive metal-organic framework (MOF) matrix for the derivatization and detection of aldehydes. A novel reactive MOF matrix (NH₂NH-MOF) was synthesized in two steps. First, NR₃⁺-MOF was synthesized via Cu²⁺ and the quaternary amine ligand 4,4'-bipyridinium, 1,1″-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis-, dibromide (PyEtBr). Then, -NHNH₂ was introduced to NR₃⁺-MOF through electrostatic adsorption between the -NR₃⁺ and -HSO₃^- of 4-hydrazinylbenzenesulfonic acid to synthesize NH₂NH-MOF. The acid-base chemistry of NH₂NH-MOF led to uniform cocrystallization of the aldehyde-matrix mixtures and helped to achieve the detection of low-weight aldehydes with good relative standard deviations (RSDs = 0.07-12.35%). It was confirmed that this strategy can accurately quantify formaldehyde, valeraldehyde, and benzaldehyde with good linearity (r > 0.97). Furthermore, this strategy was applied to quantitatively detect benzaldehyde in wastewater, thus showing potential applications in environmental pollutant detection.

Applications of water-stable metal-organic frameworks in the removal of water pollutants: A review

Because the pollutants produced by human activities have destroyed the ecological balance of natural water environment, and caused severe impact on human life safety and environmental security. Hence the task of water environment restoration is imminent. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), structured from organic ligands and inorganic metal ions, are notable for their outstanding crystallinity, diverse structures, large surface areas, adsorption performance, and excellent component tunability. The water stability of MOFs is a key requisite for their possible actual applications in separation, catalysis, adsorption, and other water environment remediation areas because it is necessary to safeguard the integrity of the material structure during utilization. In this article, we comprehensively review state-of-the-art research progress on the promising potential of MOFs as excellent nanomaterials to remove contaminants from the water environment. Firstly, the fundamental characteristics and preparation methods of several typical water-stable MOFs include UiO, MIL, and ZIF are introduced. Then, the removal property and mechanism of heavy metal ions, radionuclide contaminants, drugs, and organic dyes by different MOFs were compared. Finally, the application prospect of MOFs in pollutant remediation prospected. In this review, the synthesis methods and application in water pollutant removal are explored, which provide ways toward the effective use of water-stable MOFs in materials design and environmental remediation.

Organic Dyes versus Adsorption Processing

Even in the first quarter of the XXI century, the presence of organic dyes in wastewaters was a normal occurrence in a series of countries. As these compounds are toxic, their removal from these waters is a necessity. Among the separation technologies, adsorption processing appeared as one of the most widely used to reach this goal. The present work reviewed the most recent approaches (first half of the 2021 year) regarding the use of a variety of adsorbents in the removal of a variety of organic dyes of different natures.
