Application of gas chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-(APCI)MS/MS) in determination of PCBs (mono-to deca-) and PCDD/Fs in Chinese mitten crab food webs

Determination of 3-nitropropionic acid in sugarcane using dispersive solid-phase extraction and gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry

A method for accurately determining 3-nitropropionic acid in sugarcane was established for the first time using gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (GC - APCI-MS/MS). Under acidic conditions, 3-nitropropionic acid is methylated to obtain methyl 3-nitropropionate. The derivative product was purified using dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) method and analyzed using GC - APCI-MS/MS. The recovery experiments were conducted at three concentrations: low, medium, and high. The recovery rates ranged from 75.1% to 90.2%, the relative standard deviations were <8.2%, and the limit of quantification was 2.0 μg/kg. The method offers the advantage of being accurate, sensitive, and specific, meeting the requirements of the determination of 3-nitropropionic acid in sugarcane.

Ultrasensitive monitoring of PCB77 in environmental samples using a visible-driven photoelectrochemical sensing platform coupling with exonuclease I assisted in target recycling

Due to the urgent need for detecting trace amounts of 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) in the environment, we have developed an efficient and visible-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2 NRs), coupling with exonuclease I (Exo I) assisted in target recycling for significant signal amplification. CQDs/TiO2 NRs with high visible-light absorption ability and electron-hole separation efficiency is used as photoactive substrate for anchoring anti-PCB77 aptamer and its complementary DNA (cDNA). With the addition of PCB77, the specific interaction between PCB77 and its aptamer forces aptamer to separate from the electrode surface, resulting in an increase in photocurrent density. Adding Exo I in the test system, a self-catalytic target cycle was motivated, which significantly increased the PEC signal by more than twice, achieving signal amplification. The relationship between the photocurrent density changes and the concentrations of PCB77 are utilized to achieve quantitative detection of PCB77. The designed PEC sensing platform has good analytical performance with a detection limit as low as 0.33 pg L-1, high selectivity and stability. Moreover, the PEC sensor is successfully used to evaluate the content of PBC77 in the environment samples. The established sensing platform provides a simple and efficient method for detecting trace amounts of PCB77 in the environment.

Efficient enrichment and sensitive detection of polychlorinated biphenyls using nanoflower MIL-on-UiO as solid-phase microextraction fiber coating

The sensitive detection of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is crucial for protecting the environment and human health. Herein, we constructed a Materials Institute Lavoisier 88B (MIL-88B)-on-University of Oslo 66 (UiO-66) composite (MIL-on-UiO) with a unique nanoflower morphology, in which highly stable UiO-66 is the precursor, with MIL-88B grown on its surface. MIL-on-UiO was used as a fiber coating for headspace solid-phase microextraction to enrich PCBs. Experimental results demonstrated that MIL-on-UiO provided better enrichment performance for PCBs than single components due to multiple interactions, including π-π stacking, halogen bonding, pore-filling, and steric hindrance effects. The method established using the MIL-on-UiO-based SPME fiber coating provided a good linear relationship in the range of 0.001-50 ng·mL-1, with limits of detection ranging from 0.0002 to 0.002 ng·mL-1 and enrichment factors between 3530 and 7420. In addition, the method was used to detect trace PCBs in water and orange juice achieving satisfactory recoveries (81%-111%).

A review on recent advances in mass spectrometry analysis of harmful contaminants in food

Food safety is a widespread global concern with the emergence of foodborne diseases. Thus, establishing accurate and sensitive detection methods of harmful contaminants in different food matrices is essential to address and prevent the associated health risks. Among various analytical tools, mass spectrometry (MS) can quantify multiple impurities simultaneously due to high resolution and accuracy and can achieve non-target profiling of unknown pollutants in food. Therefore, MS has been widely used for determination of hazardous contaminants [e.g., mycotoxin, pesticide and veterinary drug residues, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, acrylamide, perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and p-Phenylenediamine compounds (PPDs) in food samples]. This work summarizes MS applications in detecting harmful contaminants in food matrices, discusses advantages of MS for food safety study, and provides a perspective on future directions of MS development in food research. With the persistent occurrence of novel contaminants, MS will play a more and more critical role in food analysis.

Burden levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls in typical edible meat animals

The concentrations and distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the whole blood and meat of eight typical edible animals (chicken, donkey, horse, cattle, rabbit, sheep, duck, and pig) were illustrated. Total concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and PCBs (on a basis of liquid volume) in animal bloods were 142-484 pg/L and 46-62 ng/L, respectively. Total concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs (on a basis of dry weight (dw) and lipid weight (lw)) in animal meat samples were 0.47-1090 pg/g dw (0.47-4513 pg/g lw) and 7.2-23 ng/g dw (10-776 ng/g lw), respectively. TEQs for both PCDD/Fs and PCBs in animal blood and meat samples were (67 ± 27) pg/L and (5.3 ± 14) pg/g dw (24 ± 56 pg/g lw), respectively. Besides, the dietary intakes of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were also estimated. Chicken and pig contributed more TEQs than other animals. Chicken contributed the most (95%) with high toxicity, followed by pig (3.4%) with high consumption. The dietary intake of chicken might pose risks to consumers who prefer to eat chicken products, who should comprehensively consider the essential nutrients and contaminants in food during dietary intake.

Design an efficient photoelectrochemical aptasensor for PCB72 based on CdTe@CdS core@shell quantum dots-decorated TiO2 nanotubes

In this work, an efficient and novel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for 2,3',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB72) was constructed based on CdTe@CdS core@shell quantum dots (CdTe@CdS QDs)-decorated TiO₂ nanotubes (TiO₂ NTs). CdTe@CdS QDs were prepared by the combination of CdTe and CdS with a proper lattice mismatch. Due to their large band offsets, core@shell QDs can reduce undesirable carrier recombination, significantly improving their charge separation efficiency. Then the synthesized CdTe@CdS QDs were modified on TiO₂ NTs (CdTe@CdS QDs/TiO₂ NTs) through electrostatic adsorption method. The as-prepared composites exhibit a wide visible light absorption range, good PEC activity and high photoelectric conversion efficiency. Also, the PEC aptasensor prepared via the immobilization of anti-PCB72 aptamer on the composites exhibits outstanding analytical performance with high sensitivity and specificity for PCB72 under visible-light irradiation, achieving a detection limit as low as 0.03 ng/L. It was also applied to detect PCB72 in four different real environmental samples with satisfactory results.

A simple and reliable method for separation of mineral oil/polychlorobiphenyl mixtures

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were broadly applied worldwide as electrical insulators in transformers and power capacitors, due to their high dielectric constant and non-flammability. They were often added to mineral oils (MOs) and used as dielectric fluids, which are nowadays classified as hazardous waste. Indeed, the Stockholm Convention aims to eliminate the use of equipment with PCB content greater than 0.005 wt-% (=50 ppm) by 2025. Accurate identification and quantification of small traces of PCBs contained in MO thus represent a great analytical challenge. To achieve this goal, a simple, cost-effective and fast chromatographic process was developed to separate PCBs from MO, allowing to obtain reliable data to determine the concentration of PCBs, reduced to 2-3 ppm. Experimental and analytical methods, such as thin layer chromatography, column chromatography as well as gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, were applied to acquire a high level of qualitative and quantitative determination of PCBs in transformer MOs.

New insights into the transfer and accumulation of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in the food web of farmed Chinese mitten crabs: A typical case from the Yangtze River area

Dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) transfer and accumulation behavior remains poorly understood in the farmed Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). In this study, dioxins and DL-PCBs concentration in 48 farming crabs in lower reaches of the Yangtze River was monitored and controlled field design was conducted in a typical farm to dissect the dioxins and DL-PCBs contamination in crab food web (crab, feeds, and environment). Results showed that dioxins and DL-PCBs were ubiquitous in farmed crabs with concentrations ranging from 0.390 to 37.2 pg toxic equivalents (TEQ) g^-1 ww and do not present a health risk to general consumers. Of the total dioxins TEQ found in crab in treated farms, 45.6% was attributed to direct transfer from the aquaculture environment and 46.5% to the consumption of snails. Consumption of feed material accounted for nearly all of the total DL-PCBs TEQ, divided as 58.2% from feed and 41.8% from snails. These results demonstrated that dominant routes of dioxins accumulation in crabs were transferred for the sediment-snail-crab and sediment-crab chains, whereas DL-PCBs is mainly transferred through consumption of feeds and snails. To our knowledge, this work is the first report of snails serving as a biomagnification medium that promotes accumulation of dioxins in mitten crabs. This observation provided crucial insight to prevent and reduce contamination of crab by dioxins and DL-PCBs.

Nontargeted Screening Using Gas Chromatography-Atmospheric Pressure Ionization Mass Spectrometry: Recent Trends and Emerging Potential

Gas chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC–HRMS) is a powerful nontargeted screening technique that promises to accelerate the identification of environmental pollutants. Currently, most GC–HRMS instruments are equipped with electron ionization (EI), but atmospheric pressure ionization (API) ion sources have attracted renewed interest because: (i) collisional cooling at atmospheric pressure minimizes fragmentation, resulting in an increased yield of molecular ions for elemental composition determination and improved detection limits; (ii) a wide range of sophisticated tandem (ion mobility) mass spectrometers can be easily adapted for operation with GC–API; and (iii) the conditions of an atmospheric pressure ion source can promote structure diagnostic ion–molecule reactions that are otherwise difficult to perform using conventional GC–MS instrumentation. This literature review addresses the merits of GC–API for nontargeted screening while summarizing recent applications using various GC–API techniques. One perceived drawback of GC–API is the paucity of spectral libraries that can be used to guide structure elucidation. Herein, novel data acquisition, deconvolution and spectral prediction tools will be reviewed. With continued development, it is anticipated that API may eventually supplant EI as the de facto GC–MS ion source used to identify unknowns.
