Current intensities altered the performance and microbial community structure of a bio-electrochemical system

Contaminant removal performance and lipid productivity of a cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium containing exogenous phytohormones during the treatment of antibiotic-polluted wastewater

In this study, a cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium containing native wastewater bacteria and immobilized Synechococcus sp. was constructed. The cyanobacterial cellular responses (including growth, biomass and lipid productivity) and contaminant removal ability (for TN, TP, COD and antibiotics) in the consortium were evaluated during the advanced treatment of wastewater containing 10-50 μg/L of mixed antibiotics (amoxicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin) with the addition of a certain phytohormone (indole-3-acetic acid, gibberellin A3 or 6-benzylaminopurine) at trace level within a period of four days. Each phytohormone promoted the growth of Synechococcus sp. and increased the tolerance of Synechococcus sp. to mixed antibiotics. Indole-3-acetic acid coupled to moderate antibiotic stress could elevate lipid productivity and lipid content of Synechococcus sp. to 33.50 mg/L/day and 43.75%, respectively. Phytohormones increased the pollutant removal performance of the cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium through the stimulation of cyanobacterial growth and the regulation of cyanobacteria-bacteria interaction, which increased the abundances of microalgae-associated bacteria including Flavobacterium, Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Bosea, Sphingomonas and Emticicia. Up to 80.83%, 98.06%, 83.26%, 99.84%, 99.50%, 89.41%, 65.61% and 60.65% of TN, TP, COD, amoxicillin, tetracycline, erythromycin, sulfadiazine and ciprofloxacin were removed by the consortium with the addition of phytohormones. In general, indole-3-acetic acid was the optimal phytohormone for enhancing lipid production and contaminant removal performance of the cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium.

Environmentally responsive changes in mucus indicators and microbiota of Chinese sturgeon Acipensersinensis

The impact of environmental factors on the health of the endangered Chinese sturgeon (Acipenser sinensis) and the potential hazards associated with sample collection for health monitoring pose urgent need to its conservation. In this study, Chinese sturgeons were selected from indoor and outdoor environments to evaluate metabolic and tissue damage indicators, along with a non-specific immune enzyme in fish mucus. Additionally, the microbiota of both water bodies and fish mucus were determined using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The correlation between the indicators and the microbiota was investigated, along with the measurement of multiple environmental factors. The results revealed significantly higher levels of two metabolic indicators, total protein (TP) and cortisol (COR) in indoor fish mucus compared to outdoor fish mucus (p < 0.05). The activities of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), creatine kinase (CK), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were significantly higher in indoor fish, serving as indicators of tissue damage (p < 0.05). The activity of lysozyme (LZM) was significantly lower in indoor fish (p < 0.01). Biomarker analysis at the phylum and genus levels in outdoor samples revealed that microorganisms were primarily related to the catabolism of organic nutrients. In indoor environments, microorganisms displayed a broader spectrum of functions, including ecological niche establishment, host colonization, potential pathogenicity, and antagonism of pathogens. KEGG functional enrichment corroborated these findings. Dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), turbidity (TU), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) exerted effects on outdoor microbiota. Temperature (TEMP), nitrate (NO3-), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) influenced indoor microbiota. Changes in mucus indicators, microbial structure, and function in both environments were highly correlated with these factors. Our study provides novel insights into the health impacts of different environments on Chinese sturgeon using a non-invasive method.

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter for treating cyclohexanone-containing wastewater: Degradation, mechanism and optimization

Electrocatalytic coupled biofilter (EBF) technology organically integrates the characteristics of electrochemistry and microbial redox, providing ideas for effectively improving biological treatment performance. In this study, an EBF system was developed for enhanced degradation of cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Experimental results show that the system can effectively remove cyclohexanone in contaminated water. Under the optimal parameters, the removal rates of cyclohexanone, TP, NH4+-N and TN were 97.61 ± 1.31%, 76.31 ± 1.67%, 94.14 ± 2.13% and 95.87 ± 1.01% respectively. Degradation kinetics studies found that electrolysis, adsorption, and biodegradation pathways play a major role in the degradation of cyclohexanone. Microbial community analysis indicates that voltage can affect the structure of the microbial community, with the dominant genera shifting from Acidovorax (0 V) to Brevundimonas (0.7 V). Additionally, Acidovorax, Cupriavidus, Ralstonia, and Hydrogenophaga have high abundance in the biofilm and can effectively metabolize cyclohexanone and its intermediates, facilitating the removal of cyclohexanone. In summary, this research can guide the development and construction of highly stable EBF systems and is expected to be used for advanced treatment of industrial wastewater containing cyclohexanone.

Electrochemical-coupled sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification for nitrogen removal from raw landfill leachate: Evaluation of performance and mechanisms

The cost-effective and environment-friendly sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SdAD) process has drawn significant attention for advanced nitrogen removal from low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio wastewater in recent years. However, achieving efficient nitrogen removal and maintaining system stability of SdAD process in treating low C/N landfill leachate treatment have been a major challenge. In this study, a novel electrochemical-coupled sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (ESdAD) system was developed and compared with SdAD system through a long-term continuous study. Superior nitrogen removal performance (removal efficiency of 89.1 ± 2.5 %) was achieved in ESdAD system compared to SdAD process when treating raw landfill leachate (influent total nitrogen (TN) concentration of 241.7 ± 36.3 mg-N/L), and the effluent TN concentration of ESdAD bioreactor was as low as 24.8 ± 5.1 mg-N/L, which meets the discharge standard of China (< 40 mg N/L). Moreover, less sulfate production rate (1.3 ± 0.2 mg SO42--S/mgNOx--N vs 1.7 ± 0.2 mg SO42--S/mgNOx--N) and excellent pH modulation (pH of 6.9 ± 0.2 vs 5.8 ± 0.4) were also achieved in the ESdAD system compared to SdAD system. The improvement of ESdAD system performance was contributed to coexistence and interaction of heterotrophic bacteria (e.g., Rhodanobacter, Thermomonas, etc.), sulfur autotrophic bacteria (e.g., Thiobacillus, Sulfurimonas, Ignavibacterium etc.) and hydrogen autotrophic bacteria (e.g., Thauera, Comamonas, etc.) under current stimulation. In addition, microbial nitrogen metabolic activity, including functional enzyme (e.g., Nar and Nir) activities and electron transfer capacity of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and cytochrome c (Cyt-C), were also enhanced during current stimulation, which facilitated the nitrogen removal and maintained system stability. These findings suggested that ESdAD is an effective and eco-friendly process for advanced nitrogen removal for low C/N wastewater.

Enhanced aerobic granular sludge with micro-electric field for sulfamethoxazole degradation: Efficiency, mechanism, and microbial community

In this study, an aerobic granular sludge electrochemical system (AGES) was established by applying the micro-electric field to an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactor for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMZ). Under the stimulation of the micro-electric field, the granulation of sludge was improved and the degradation rate of SMZ was enhanced. The features of granular sludge were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The optimal degradation rate of SMZ (88%) was obtained at the voltage of 3 V and the effective electrode area of 800 mm2. The results of kinetics analyses revealed that the degradation of SMZ by AGES can be fitted with the second-order kinetic equation, showing a degradation rate constant (k) of 0.001 L mol-1·min-1. The degradation products of SMZ in the AGES system were detected by LC-MS and their possible degradation routes were elucidated. The micro-electric field in the AGES system played a selective role in microbes' enrichment and growth, changing the diversity of the microbial community. Pseudomonas, Tolumonas, and Acidovorax were the dominant bacteria in the AGES system, which is accountable for the abatement of SMZ and nutrients. This work provides a green means for improving AGS and paves the way for applying the AGS process to real-world wastewater treatment.

Advanced treatment of antibiotic-polluted wastewater by a consortium composed of bacteria and mixed cyanobacteria

This study constructed a cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium using a mixture of non-toxic cyanobacteria (Synechococcus sp. and Chroococcus sp.) immobilized in calcium alginate and native bacteria in wastewater. The consortium was used for the advanced treatment of sulfamethoxazole-polluted wastewater and the production of cyanobacterial lipid. Mixed cyanobacteria increased the abundances of denitrifying bacteria and phosphorus-accumulating bacteria as well as stimulated various functional enzymes in the wastewater bacterial community, which efficiently removed 70.01-71.86% of TN, 91.45-97.04% of TP and 70.72-76.85% of COD from the wastewater. The removal efficiency of 55.29-69.90% for sulfamethoxazole was mainly attributed to the upregulation of genes encoding oxidases, reductases, oxidoreductases and transferases in two cyanobacterial species as well as the increased abundances of Stenotrophomonas, Sediminibacterium, Arenimonas, Novosphingobium, Flavobacterium and Hydrogenophaga in wastewater bacterial community. Transcriptomic responses proved that mixed cyanobacteria presented an elevated lipid productivity of 33.90 mg/L/day as an adaptive stress response to sulfamethoxazole. Sediminibacterium, Flavobacterium and Exiguobacterium in the wastewater bacterial community may also promote cyanobacterial lipid synthesis through symbiosis. Results of this study proved that the mixed cyanobacteria-bacteria consortium was a promising approach for advanced wastewater treatment coupled to cyanobacterial lipid production.

Advanced degradation of refractory organic compounds in electroplating wastewater by an in-situ electro-catalytic biological coupling reactor: Removal performance, microbial community and possible mechanism

A high-efficiency treatment system for advanced degradation of refractory organic compounds such as saccharin sodium (SS) and polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) in electroplating wastewater was proposed, which coupled ion exchange, electrocatalysis, and microbial interactions through ion exchange particle electrode (IEPE) in a reactor, named in-situ electro-catalytic biological coupling reactor (i-SECBCR). A small-scale experimental test system was established and a feasibility investigation was conducted under the condition of 1.248 L/h continuous flow. The results revealed that (1) the i-SECBCR showed higher average removal rates of SS, PEG 6000, COD and NH4+-N, i.e. 88.48 %, 41.26 %, 66.81 % and 51.61 %,which meant an increase by 5.04 %, 12.05 %, 0.46 %, and 34.50 %, respectively, compared with BAF; (2) the optimal current intensity (CI) of i-SECBCR for simultaneous removal of SS, PEG 6000, COD and NH4+-N was 0.40 mA cm-2; (3) Rhodobacter, Defluviimonas, unclassified_f__Microscillaceae, Pseudoxanthomonas, Novosphingobium, and unclassified_f__Xanthobacteraccae accounted for the main bacterial community in i-SECBCR; (4) the possible degradation mechanism was attributed mainly to the synergistic effect of ion exchange, electrocatalytic oxidation and biology. Therefore, the i-SECBCR was suitable to simultaneously advanced remove SS, PEG 6000, COD and NH4+-N in electroplating wastewater.

Enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal by a novel ecological floating bed integrated with three-dimensional biofilm electrode system

The ecological floating bed (EFB) has been used extensively for the purification of eutrophication water. However, the traditional EFB (T-EFB) often exhibits a decline in nitrogen and phosphorus removal because of the limited adsorption capacity of fillers and inadequate electron donors. In the present study, a series of electrolysis-ecological floating beds (EC-EFBs) were constructed to investigate the decontamination performance of conventional pollutants. EC-EFB outperformed T-EFB in terms of nitrogen and phosphorus removal. Its removal efficiency of total nitrogen and total phosphorus was 20.51-32.95% and 45.06-96.20%, which were higher than that in T-EFB.. Moreover, the plants in EC-EFB demonstrated higher metabolic activity than those in T-EFB. Under the electrolysis condition of 0.51 mA/cm2 for 24 h, the malondialdehyde content and superoxide dismutase activity in EC-EFB were 6.08 nmol/g and 22.61 U/g, which were significantly lower compared to T-EFB (38.65 nmol/g and 26.13 U/g). And the soluble protein content of plant leaves increased from 3.31 mg/g to 5.72 mg/g in EC-EFB. Microbial analysis revealed that electrolysis could significantly change the microbial community and facilitate the proliferation of nitrogen-functional microbes, such as Thermomonas, Hydrogenophaga, Deinococcus, and Zoogloea. It is important to highlight that the hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode area facilitated phosphorus removal in EC-EFB, thereby inhibiting phosphorus leaching. This study provides a promising and innovative technology for the purification of eutrophic water.

Effect of different inocula on the granulation process, reactor performance and biodiesel production of algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) under low aeration conditions

The algal-bacterial granular sludge (ABGS) system is a prospective wastewater treatment technology, but few studies focused on the effects of different inoculum types on the establishment of the ABGS system under low aeration conditions (step-decrease superficial gas velocity from 1.4 to 0.5 cm/s). Results from this study indicated that compared with other inocula, the ABGS formed by co-inoculating aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and targeted algae (Chlorella) exhibited a shorter granulation period (shortened by 15 days), higher total nitrogen (89.4%) and PO43--P (95.0%) removal efficiencies, and a greater yield of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) (9.04 mg/g MLSS). This was possibly attributed to that the functional bacteria (e.g. Thauera, Gemmobacter and Rhodobacter) in the inoculated AGS facilitated the ABGS granulation. The inoculated algae promoted their effective enrichment under illumination conditions and enhanced the production of extracellular polymeric substances, thus improving the stability of ABGS. The enriched algae were attached to the outer layer of the granules, which could provide sufficient oxygen for bacterial metabolism, revealing the inherent mechanisms for the good stability of ABGS under low aeration intensity. Overall, the rapid granulation of ABGS can be achieved by inoculating optimal inocula under low aeration conditions, which is convenient and economically feasible, and motivates the application of algal-bacterial consortia.

The aggregated biofilm dominated by Delftia tsuruhatensis enhances the removal efficiency of 2,4-dichlorophenol in a bioelectrochemical system

Bioelectrochemical system is a prospective strategy in organic-contaminated groundwater treatment, while few studies clearly distinguish the mechanisms of adsorption or biodegradation in this process, especially when dense biofilm is formed. This study employed a single chamber microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) with two three-dimensional electrodes for removing a typical organic contaminant, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) from groundwater, which inoculated with anaerobic bacteria derived from sewage treatment plant. Compared with the single biodegradation system without electrodes, the three-dimensional electrodes with a high surface enabled an increase of alpha diversity of the microbial community (increased by 52.6% in Shannon index), and provided adaptive ecological niche for more bacteria. The application of weak voltage (0.6 V) furtherly optimized the microbial community structure, and promoted the aggregation of microorganisms with the formation of dense biofilm. Desorption experiment proved that the contaminants were removed from the groundwater mainly via adsorption by the biofilm rather than biodegradation, and compared with the reactor without electricity, the bioelectrochemical system increased the adsorption capacity from 50.0% to 74.5%. The aggregated bacteria on the surface of electrodes were mainly dominated by Delftia tsuruhatensis (85.0%), which could secrete extracellular polymers and has a high adsorption capacity (0.30 mg/g electrode material) for the contaminants. We found that a bioelectrochemical system with a three-dimensional electrode could stimulate the formation of dense biofilm and remove the organic contaminants as well as their possible more toxic degradation intermediates via adsorption. This study provides important guidance for applying bioelectrochemical system in groundwater or wastewater treatment.

Bioelectrochemical systems for enhanced nitrogen removal with minimal greenhouse gas emission from carbon-deficient wastewater: A review

Nitrogen pollution and the rising amount of wastewater generation are calling for advanced wastewater treatments, which is particularly necessary for carbon-deficient wastewater that contains multi-species inorganic nitrogen, since conventional heterotrophic denitrification processes cannot remove nitrogen completely when carbon sources are insufficient. For that, bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have been recently developed because they can simultaneously produce electricity and remove resistant nitrogen from the carbon-deficient wastewater. However, the simultaneous removal of multi-species inorganic nitrogen cannot be achieved by electroautotrophic denitrification using BES alone. Moreover, the efficiency of nitrogen removal and power generation has been thwarted by the low energy output, high internal resistance of the device, and electron competition in non-denitrification pathways. This review article discusses the latest developments for nitrogen removal through BES-enhanced denitrification and elucidates multiple coupled BES-based denitrification pathways to remove multi-species inorganic nitrogen simultaneously. Focus points of the research area include coupling BES technologies with emerged methods, electron transfer enhancement, and avoiding electron competition that improves performance with less cost. The prospect of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases is also critically reviewed, in the hope of reducing potential intermediate products of denitrification, such as nitrous oxide (a potent greenhouse gas), through multi-factor regulation. We imply that BES is a good choice for future scale-up applications of MFC coupled with MEC to treat carbon-deficient wastewater. Overall, this review will provide useful information for the development of advanced technologies to treat carbon-deficient wastewater with less emission of greenhouse gases.

Effect of electric current intensity on performance of polycaprolactone/FeS2-based mixotrophic biofilm-electrode reactor

In this study, a bioelectrochemical system consisting of pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) was established to polish nitrate wastewater. The loading of electric current (EC) could stimulate the dissolution of pyrite. Appropriate EC (I ≤ 30 mA) was conducive to nitrate removal, too high EC (I = 40 mA) would inhibit nitrate removal and lead to an obvious accumulation of NO₂^--N and NH₄⁺-N. Microbial analysis revealed that the increase of EC could inhibit the diversity of heterotrophic microbes, but appropriate EC (I = 10 mA) could increase the diversity of autotrophic microbes. The EC loading was conducive to the enrichment of iron autotrophic denitrifiers (Ferritrophicum), pyrite-oxidizing bacteria (Thiobacillus, Sulfurimonas), and sulfur autotrophic denitrifiers (Dechloromonas, Thiobacillus, and Arenimonas). The EC loading enlarged the contribution of PAD, making PAD a dominant pathway in denitrification.

Enhanced CO2 reduction and acetate synthesis in autotrophic biocathode by N-Hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6HSL)-based quorum-sensing regulation

The aim of this study was to investigate the ecological role of quorum-sensing signaling molecule on the autotrophic biocathode for CO₂ reduction and acetate synthesis. As a typical quorum-sensing signaling molecule, N-Hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6HSL) was used to regulate the construction of cathode biofilm. Results showed that the maximum acetate production from CO₂ reduction improved by 94.8%, and the maximum Faraday efficiency of the microbial electrosynthesis system enhanced by 71.7%, with the regulation of C6HSL. Electrochemical analyses indicated that higher electrochemical activity and lower charge resistance of biocathode were obtained with C6HSL than without C6HSL. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron inhibitor experiment suggested that exogenous C6HSL increased living biomass in the biofilm and facilitated the electron transfer pathway related to NADH dehydrogenase-CoQ and proton motive force. With the C6HSL regulation, the relative abundance of hydrogen producers (e.g., Desulfovibrio and Desulfomicrobium) increased, contributing to the improved performance of autotrophic biocathode.

Biofilm phenotypes and internal community succession determines distinct growth of anammox bacteria in functional anammox biofilms

In this study, time-series anammox functional biofilms were obtained in a lab-scale simultaneous partial nitritation/anammox process for treating high-strength ammonium. The variations in the biofilm phenotypes, community succession, and anammox bacteria abundance over time were evaluated using optical microscopy, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and qPCR. The result revealed that biofilm has three distinct stages of the community development trajectory across a 182-day temporal scale. Anammox bacteria growth rates were 0.035 d^-1, 0.0015 d^-1, and 0.011 d^-1, respectively. The diversity and network analysis suggested that the positive priority effect of ammonia oxidizing bacteria was the primary factor for the rapid proliferation of anammox bacteria, and the species replacement triggering priority effect forfeiture and substituted functional recruitment were reasons for the slow proliferation and stable proliferation of anammox bacteria, respectively. Taken together, the higher microbial diversity and stable community composite were key prerequisites for the proliferation of the anammox bacteria.

Efficient degradation of naproxen in a three dimensional biofilm electrode magnetism reactor (3DBEMR): Removal performance and microbial community

A three-dimensional biofilm electrode magnetism reactor (3DBEMR) was constructed to removal naproxen (NPX). This study evaluated 3DBEMR performance in removal of refractory NPX, while also discussing the effect of the electro-magnetic superposition on microbial community by high throughput sequencing. Results indicated that 3DBEMR's average removal rate for NPX stood at 88.36%, representing an increase by 75.24%, 65.03% and 12.36%, respectively, compared to 3DBR (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Reactor), 3DBMR (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Magnetism Reactor) and 3DBER (Three-Dimensional Biofilm Electrode Reactor). This was attributed to the influence of electro-magnetic adsorption, electro-oxidaton/catalysis, and electro-magnetic biodegradation. Another major contributing factor to NPX removal was the presence in 3DBEMR of high-abundance genera such as Rhodobacter, Porphyrobacter, Methyloversatilis, Sphingopyxis,Bosea, Singulisphaera, Sphingomonas. Therefore, the 3DBEMR was successfully demonstrated to be a flexible and effective technique in NPX degradation, which would help to better understand the effect of superposition of electric and magnetic fields on microbial community.

A critical review of existing mechanisms and strategies to enhance N2 selectivity in groundwater nitrate reduction

The pollution of nitrate (NO3-) in groundwater has become an environmental problem of general concern and requires immediate remediation because of adverse human and ecological impacts. NO3- removal from groundwater is conducted mainly by chemical, biological, and coupled methods, with the removal efficiency of NO3- considered the sole performance indicator. However, in addition to the harmless form of N2, the reduced NO3- could be transformed into other intermediates, such as nitrite (NO2-), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ammonia (NH4+), which may have direct or indirect negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, increasing N2 selectivity is a significant challenge in reducing NO3- in groundwater, which seriously impedes the large-scale implementation of available remediation technologies. In this work, we comprehensively overview the most recent advances in N2 selectivity regarding the understanding of emerging groundwater NO3- removal technologies. Mechanisms of by-product production and strategies to enhance the selective reduction of NO3- to N2 are discussed in detail. Furthermore, we proposed topics for further research and hope that the total environmental impacts of remediation schemes should be evaluated comprehensively by quantifying all potential intermediate products, and promising strategies should be further developed to enhance N2 selectivity, to improve the feasibility of related technologies in actual remediation.

Microbial explanation to performance stratification along up-flow solid-phase denitrification column packed with polycaprolactone

In this study, the fluctuating profiles of physicochemical and microbial characterizations along different filling heights of continuously up-flow solid-phase denitrification (SPD) columns packed with polycaprolactone (PCL) were investigated. It was found both the PCL filling area and non-filling area made significant contributions to treatment performance and denitrification mainly occurred near the bottom of the filling column. Nitrate displayed a high proportional removal (≥98.7%) among all the cases except the one with the lowest filling ratio (FR30) and highest NLR (3.99 ± 0.12 gN/(L·d)), while nitrite and ammonium displayed a weak accumulation in final effluents (nitrite ≤ 0.40 mg/L; ammonium ≤ 0.98 mg/L). The intensity of PCL hydrolysis in the top substrate was stronger than those in the middle or bottom. Both dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and microbial lysis contributed to ammonium accumulation, and nitrate was mainly removed via traditional denitrification and DNRA. JGI_0000069-P22_unclassified and Gracilibacteria_unclassified might contribute to denitrification.

Three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3D-BERs) for wastewater treatment

Three-dimensional biofilm electrode reactors (3D-BERs) are highly efficient in refractory wastewater treatment. In comparison to conventional bio-electrochemical systems, the filled particle electrodes act as both electrodes and microbial carriers in 3D-BERs. This article reviews the conception and basic mechanisms of 3D-BERs, as well as their current development. The advantages of 3D-BERs are illustrated with an emphasis on the synergy of electricity and microorganisms. Electrode materials utilized in 3D-BERs are systematically summarized, especially the critical particle electrodes. The configurations of 3D-BERs and their integration with wastewater treatment reactors are introduced. Operational parameters and the adaptation of 3D-BERs to varieties of wastewater are discussed. The prospects and challenges of 3D-BERs for wastewater treatment are then presented, and the future research directions are proposed. We believe that this timely review will help to attract more attentions on 3D-BERs investigation, thus promoting the potential application of 3D-BERs in wastewater treatment.

Changes of microbial community structure during the initial stage of biological clogging in horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands

The clogging is a universal problem in constructed wetlands, where microorganisms play an essential role. However, the implication of micro-organism variation due to the clogging is not clear. Four horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HFCWs) were designed and operated to simulate the process of clogging. The wetland treatment performance and microbial community variation were investigated by regularly monitoring. Results showed the substrate filtration rate and the total phosphorous (TP) removal efficiency consistently decreased and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency were at the range of 50%-85% and 10-20%, respectively. The sequencing results indicated that the clogging could affect the richness of bacterial community. The bacterial variation could be attributed to the dissolved oxygen decreasing and organic matter accumulation in the initial clogging period. These findings are expected to provide some theoretical reference for developing the biological methods to indicate the initial clogging in constructed wetlands.

Microbial fuel cells for remediation of environmental pollutants and value addition: Special focus on coupling diatom microbial fuel cells with photocatalytic and photoelectric fuel cells

With the advent of global industrialisation and adaptation of smart life there is rise in anthropogenic pollution especially in water. Remediation of the pollutants (such as metals, and dyes) present in industrial effluents is possible via microbes and algae present in the environment. Microbes are used in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) for remediation of various organic and inorganic pollutants. However, for industrial scale application coupling the MFCs with photocatalytic and photoelectric fuel cell has a potential in improving the output of power. It can also be used for remediation of pollutants more expeditiously, conserving fossil fuels, cleaning environment, hence making the coupled hybrid fuel cell to run economically. Furthermore, such MFC inbuilt with algae in living or powder form give additional value addition products like biofuel, polysaccharides, biopolymers, and polyhydroxy alkanoates etc. This review provides bird's eye view on the removal of environmental pollutants by different biological sources like bacteria and algae. The article is focussed on diatoms as potential algae since they are rich source of crude oil and high value added products in a hybrid photocatalytic MFC. It also covers bottle necks, challenges and future in this field of research.
