Abstract
The photoelectrocatalytic advanced oxidation process (PEAOP) necessitates high-performing and stable photoanodes for the effective oxidation of complex pollutants in industrial wastewater. This study presents the construction of 2D WO3/MXene heteronanostructures for the development of efficient and stable photoanode. The WO3/MXene heterostructure features well-ordered WO3 photoactive sites anchored on micron-sized MXene sheets, providing an increased visible light active catalytic surface area and enhanced electrocatalytic activities for pollutant oxidation. Phenol, a highly toxic compound, was completely oxidized at an applied potential of 0.8 V vs. RHE under visible light irradiation. Systematic optimization of operational conditions for the photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of phenol was conducted. The phenol oxidation mechanism was elucidated via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis and the identification of intermediate compounds. Additionally, a mixed model of phenol and arsenic (III) in polluted water demonstrated the capability of WO3/MXene photoanode for the simultaneous oxidation of both organic and inorganic pollutants, achieving complete conversion of phenol and As(III) to non-toxic As(V). The WO3/MXene photoanode facilitated water oxidation, generating a substantial amount of O2•- and •OH oxidative species, which are crucial for the concurrent oxidation of phenol and arsenic. Recyclability tests demonstrated a 99% retention of performance, confirming the WO3/MXene photoanode's suitability for long-term operation in PEAOPs. The findings suggest that integrating WO3/MXene photoanodes into water purification systems can enhance economic feasibility, reduce energy consumption, and improve efficiency. This PEAOP offers a viable solution to the critical issue of heavy metal and organic chemical pollution in various water bodies, given its scalability and ability to preserve ecosystems while conserving clean water resources.

Abstract
Current study covers the preparation and application of a commercial modified lead oxide battery electrode (LBE) in electrochemical oxidation (ECO) of metronidazole (MNZ) in an aqueous phase. Modified electrode is prepared by doping of bimetal-oxide (Fe and Zn) nanoparticles (NPs) & single metal-oxide (Fe/Zn) on bagasse-waste carbon (bwc) which is further coated on LBE. The modified LBE electrode surface was examined for metal-oxide NPs through X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Different electrodes are prepared by varying combinations of two metal-oxide based on molar ratio and tested for electrochemical characterization and MNZ removal test. Based on large oxygen evolution potential in a linear sweep volumetry (LSV) analysis and high MNZ removal rate, the best electrode has been represented as Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE which contains Fe & Co molar ratio of 1:2. Moreover, equilibrium attained at faster rate in degradation process of MNZ, where pseudo first order kinetics of 2.29 × 10-2 min-1 was obtained under optimized condition of (MNZ:100 mg/L, pH:7, CD: 30 mA/cm2 and electrolyte: 0.05 M Na2SO4). Maximum MNZ removal, total organic carbon removal (TOC), mineralization current efficiency (MCE) & energy consumption (EC) of 98.7%, 85.3%, 62.2% & 96.143 kW h/kg-TOC removed are found in 180 min of treatment time for Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE electrode. Accelerated service life test confirms that the stability of modified electrode is enhanced by 1.5 times compared to pristine LBE. Repeatability test confirms that modified LBE (Fe1:Co2-bwc/LBE) can be utilized up to 3 times.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are the class of materials which are purely ionic in nature and liquid at room temperature. Their remarkable properties like very low vapour pressure, non-inflammable and high heat resistance are responsible for their use as a very appealing solvent in a variety of industrial applications in place of regular organic solvents. Because ILs are water soluble to a certain extent, the industrial wastewater effluents are found to contaminate with their traces. The non-biodegradability of ILs attracts the attention of the researchers for their removal or degradation from wastewater. Numbers of methods are available for the treatment of wastewater. However, it is very crucial to use the most efficient method for the degradation of ILs. Advanced oxidation process (AOP) is one of the most important techniques for the treatment of ILs in wastewater which have been investigated during last decades. This review paper covers the cost-effective Fenton, photochemical and photocatalytic AOPs and their combination that could be applied for the degradation of ILs from the wastewater. Theoretical explanations of these AOPs along with experimental conditions and kinetics of degradation or removal of ILs from water and wastewater have been reported and compared. Finally, future perspectives of IL degradation are presented.

Abstract
The current research demonstrates the efficiency of a low-cost MIL-53(Fe)-metal-organic framework (MOF) derived Fe3O4@C (MIL-53(Fe)@Fe3O4@C) electrocatalyst in a batch-scale electro-Fenton (EF) process for the degradation of salicylic acid (SA) from wastewater. The electrocatalyst was prepared from the combination of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and iron scrap wastes. The result showed 91.68 ± 3.61% degradation of 50 mg L-1 of SA under optimum current density of 5.2 mA cm-2, and pH of 7.0 during 180 min of electrolysis time. The degradation of SA from waste catalyst was similar to the chemical-based MIL-53(Fe)-derived Fe3O4@C (cFe) cathode catalyst. The presence of chloride ions (Cl-) in the water matrix has shown a strong inhibitory effect on the elimination of SA, followed by nitrate (NO3-), and bicarbonate (HCO3-) ions. The multiple cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis and reusability test of waste cathode catalyst showed only 8.03% drop of current density at the end of the 20th cycle and 5% drop of degradation efficiency after 6th cycle with low leaching of iron. The radical scavenging experiment revealed that the HO• generated via electrochemical generation of H2O2 had a prominent contribution in the removal of SA compared to HO2•/O2•-. Besides, possible catalysis mechanism and degradation pathways were deduced. Furthermore, a satisfactory performance in the treatment of SA spiked in real water matrices was also observed by waste-derived Fe3O4@C cathode catalyst (wFe). Additionally, the total operating cost and toxicity analysis showed that the as-synthesized wFe cathode catalyst could be appropriate for removing organic pollutants from wastewater in the large-scale application.

Abstract
A double chamber electrochemical system is developed consisting of a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a graphite cathode, which not only degrades sulfamethoxazole (SMX) but also simultaneously generates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The degradation of SMX is carried out by (in)direct oxidation at the BDD anode and H2O2 is produced by two electron oxygen (O2) reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode. The effect of different parameters on the kinetics of both mechanisms was investigated. The performance of the system at the optimized conditions (pH 3, 0.05 M Na2SO4 as electrolyte, and 10 mA as applied current) showed that after 180 min of electrolysis, SMX was almost fully degraded (95% removal and ∼90% COD reduction) as well as about 535 μM H2O2 was accumulated. With the help of LC-MS, five intermediates formed during SMX electrolysis were properly identified and a degradation pathway was proposed. This study advocates methods for improving the effectiveness of energy use in advanced wastewater treatment.

Abstract
Electrochemically activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade organic pollutants is one of the most attractive advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to address environmental issues, but the high cost, poor stability, and low degradation efficiency of the anode materials hinder their application. Herein, an economic, self-supporting, robust, and durable LiFe5O8 on Fe substrate (Fe@LFO) anode is reported to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). When PDS is electrochemically activated by the Fe@LFO anode, the degradation rate of SMX is significantly improved. It is found that hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radical (O2•-), singlet oxygen (1O2), Fe(Ⅳ), activated PDS (PDS*), and direct electron transfer (DET) reactions synergistically contribute to the degradation of SMX, which can realize the degradation of SMX in four possible routes: cleavage of the isoxazole ring, hydroxylation of the benzene ring, oxidation of the aniline group, and cleavage of the S-N bond, as evidenced by a series of tests of radicals quenching, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer (LC-MS). Furthermore, Fe@LFO has good structural stability, excellent cyclability and low degradation cost, demonstrating its great potential for practical applications. This work contributes to a stable and effective anode material in the field of AOPs.

Abstract
Nitazoxanide (NTZ), a promising antiviral agent, is currently being tested in clinical trials as a potential treatment for novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID -19). This paper describes a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis to prepare molybdenum (Mo)-doped manganese tungstate nanocubes (Mo-MnWO4 NCs) for the electrochemical sensing of NTZ. The as-prepared Mo-MnWO4 NCs were characterized using various techniques such as XRD, Raman, FE-SEM, FE-TEM, and XPS to confirm the crystal structure, morphology, and elemental composition. The obtained results demonstrate that Mo doping on MnWO4 generates many vacancy sites, exhibiting remarkable electrochemical activity. The kinetic parameters of the electrode modified with Mo-MnWO4 NCs were calculated to be (Ks) 1.1 × 10-2 cm2 s-1 and (α) 0.97, respectively. Moreover, a novel electrochemical sensor using Mo-MnWO4 NCs was fabricated to detect NTZ, which is used as a primary antibiotic to control COVID-19. Under optimal conditions, the electrochemical reduction of NTZ was determined with a low detection limit of 3.7 nM for a linear range of 0.014-170.2 μM with a high sensitivity of 0.78 μA μM-1 cm-2 and negligible interference with other nitro group-containing drugs, cations, and anions. The electrochemical sensor was successfully used to detect NTZ in the blood serum and urine samples and achieved high recoveries in the range of 94-99.2% and 95.3-99.6%, respectively. This work opens a way to develop high-performance sensing materials by exploring the introduction of defect engineering on metal tungstates to detect drug molecules for practical applications.

Abstract
Lead dioxide-based electrodes have shown a great performance in the electrochemical treatment of organic wastewater. In the present study, modified PbO2 anodes supported on stainless steel (SS) with a titanium oxide interlayer such as SS/TiO2/PbO2 and SS/TiO2/PbO2-10% Boron (B) were prepared by the sol–gel spin-coating technique. The morphological and structural properties of the prepared electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the SS/TiO2/PbO2-10% B anode led to a rougher active surface, larger specific surface area, and therefore stronger ability to generate powerful oxidizing agents. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements showed that the modified PbO2 anodes displayed a lower charge transfer resistance Rct. The influence of the introduction of a TiO2 intermediate layer and the boron doping of a PbO2 active surface layer on the electrochemical degradation of ampicillin (AMP) antibiotic have been investigated by chemical oxygen demand measurements and HPLC analysis. Although HPLC analysis showed that the degradation process of AMP with SS/PbO2 was slightly faster than the modified PbO2 anodes, the results revealed that SS/TiO2/PbO2-10%B was the most efficient and economical anode toward the pollutant degradation due to its physico-chemical properties. At the end of the electrolysis, the chemical oxygen demand (COD), the average current efficiency (ACE) and the energy consumption (EC) reached, respectively, 69.23%, 60.30% and 0.056 kWh (g COD)−1, making SS/TiO2/PbO2-10%B a promising anode for the degradation of ampicillin antibiotic in aqueous solutions.

Abstract
This review discusses the fundamental principles and mechanism of antibiotic removal from water of some commonly applied treatment techniques including chlorination, ozonation, UV-irradiation, Fenton processes, photocatalysis, electrochemical-oxidation, plasma, biochar, anaerobicdigestion, activated carbon and nanomaterials. Some experimental shortfalls identified by researchers such as certain characteristics of degradation agent applied and the strategies explored to override the identified limitations are briefly discussed. Depending on interactions of a range of factors including the type of antibiotic compound, operational parameters applied such as pH, temperature and treatment time, among other factors, all reviewed techniques can eliminate or reduce the levels of antibiotic compounds in water to varying extents. Some of the reviewed techniques such as anaerobic digestion generally require longer treatment times (up to 360, 193 and 170 days, according to some studies), while others such as photocatalysis achieved degradation within short contact time (within a minimum of 30, but up to 60, 240, 300 and 1880 minutes, in some cases). For some treatment techniques such as ozonation and Fenton, it is apparent that subjecting compounds to longer treatment times may improve elimination efficiency, whereas for some other techniques such as nanotechnology, application of longer treatment time generally meant comparatively minimal elimination efficiency. Based on the findings of experimental studies summarized, it is apparent that operational parameters such as pH and treatment time, while critical, do not exert sole or primary influence on the elimination percentage(s) achieved. Elimination efficiency achieved rather seems to be due more to the force of a combination of several factors.

Abstract
A flow-through system was constructed for 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) degradation for the first time using efficient boron and cobalt co-doped TiO2 nanotubes (B, Co-TNT) as the anode and carbon black doped carbon felt (CB-CF) that had a high H2O2 yield as the cathode. Compared with dimensionally stable anode (DSA), whether in anodic oxidation (AO) or AO-electro-Fenton (EF) system, 2,4-D degradation in B, Co-TNT anode system was more efficient accompanying with a lower energy consumption (Ec). Different operating parameters including applied current density, initial pH and flow rate were explored, supporting that the optimal Fe2+ dosage was 0.5 mM while decreasing the initial pH and increasing the current intensity and flow rate were beneficial to 2,4-D removal. In this AO-EF system, the involved mechanisms for 2,4-D degradation were anodization and Fenton oxidation, possessing the comprehensive effect of •OH and SO4•- with their contribution of 92.7% and 4.8%, respectively. This flow-through AO-EF system performed a stable performance, and an efficient degradation performance with low Ec (5.8-29.5 kWh (kg TOC)-1) was obtained for different kinds of contaminants (methylene blue, phenol, p-nitrophenol and sulfamethazine). Therefore, B, Co-TNT anode coupled with CB-CF cathode in flow-through system was effective for contaminants degradation.

Abstract
A polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) doped PbO2 anode with a highly hydrophobicity was fabricated by electrodeposition method. In this process, vertically aligned TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2NTs) are formed by the anodic oxidation of Ti plates as an intermediate layer for PbO2 electrodeposition. The characterization of the electrodes indicated that PTFE was successfully introduced to the electrode surface, the TiO2NTs were completely covered with β-PbO2 particles and gave it a large surface area, which also limited the growth of its crystal particles. Compared with the conventional Ti/PbO2 and Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 electrode, the Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE electrode has enhanced surface hydrophobicity, higher oxygen evolution potential, lower electrochemical impedance, with more active sites, and generate more hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which were enhanced by the addition of PTFE nanoparticles. The electrocatalytic performance of the three electrodes were investigated using dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as the model pollutant. The efficiency of the DBP removal of the three electrodes was in the order: Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE > Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 > Ti/PbO2. The degradation process followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model well, with rate constants of 0.1326, 0.1266, and 0.1041 h-1 for the three electrodes, respectively. The lowest energy consumption (6.1 kWh g-1) was obtained after 8 h of DBP treatment using Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2-PTFE compared to Ti/TiO2NTs/PbO2 (6.7 kWh g-1) and Ti/PbO2 (7.4 kWh g-1) electrodes. Moreover, the effects of current density, initial pH and electrolyte concentration were investigated. Finally, the products of the DBP degradation process were verified based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, and possible degradation pathways were described.

Abstract
A simple multi electric resistance mode is used to regulate electroactive anode film, which improves the electricity generation, H2O2 production and pollutants removal. This external electron transport path (double cathode with different resistance) exhibits higher H2O2 production (571.9 ± 0.1 mg m-2 h-1), tetracycline removal (71.4 ± 0.4% to 50 mg L-1), and power (615.3 ± 9.9 mW m-2 plus 680.6 ± 10.3 mW m-2), which is 75.4%, 23.1% and 1.25 times higher than that of single cathode mode. The double cathode improves the relative abundance of Geobacter (exoelectrogens), which is 9.45 times higher than that of single cathode mode. The anodic capacitance of double cathode mode is more than 10 times higher than that of single cathode mode. Electrons (generate by exoelectrogens) participate in two- (cathodic chamber) and four- (anodic chamber) electron reaction at cathode surface, and facilitates electricity generation of bioelectro-Fenton. The removal rate of double cathode mode is 342.7 mg L-1 d-1 (50 mg L-1 tetracycline) and 170.1 mg L-1 d-1 (20 mg L-1 tetracycline), which is much higher than that of reported. These results indicate that external electron transport path enhances the electrochemical activity of anode film and performance of bioelectro-Fenton. This paper provides a new power supply method for the future practical application and field experiment of bioelectrio-Fenton.

Abstract
In this study, a magnetic nanocatalyst (Fe3 O4 @SiO2 @CeO2 ) was prepared and applied in the catalytic ozonation of methyldopa (MD). The effects of operational parameters on catalytic ozonation performance were investigated, including ozone dosage, catalyst dosage, initial MD concentration, and pH. The removal of MD was 45.2% in ozonation, whereas the efficiency was achieved to 83.0% with the addition of Fe3 O4 @SiO2 @CeO2 . The results showed that Fe3 O4 @SiO2 @CeO2 could significantly improve the catalytic ozonation performance. And the enhanced mechanism study showed that it was attributed to promotion of ozone decomposition to generate hydroxyl radical. The reaction model was explored, and the reaction rates were calculated for the MD degradation in catalytic ozonation. A higher degradation efficiency of MD in catalytic ozonation was attributed to the enhanced surface effect of the catalysts, which was confirmed by using TBA, PO4 3- , and p-BQ as scavengers of hydroxyl radical, surface reaction, and superoxide radical. The hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical played an important role in the degradation of MD. The mechanism of catalytic ozonation by Fe3 O4 @SiO2 @CeO2 was discussed via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) spectra and experimental data.
