S-scheme BiVO4/CQDs/β-FeOOH photocatalyst for efficient degradation of ofloxacin: Reactive oxygen species transformation mechanism insight

Research progress on composite material of bismuth vanadate catalyzing the decomposition of Quinolone antibiotics

Since quinolone is a kind of synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs, with the widespread use of this class of antibiotics, the risk and harm to human health have been attendant to the sewage containing quinolones which are discharged into the environment. Photocatalysis is considered as a promising technology for antibiotic degradation for its strong redox properties and reaction rate. As a metal oxidizing substance, Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is such a popular and hot material for the degradation of organic pollutants recently due to its good photocatalytic activity and chemical stability. Numerous studies have confirmed that BiVO4 composites can overcome the shortcomings of pure BiVO4 and cleave the main structure of quinolone under photocatalytic conditions. This paper mainly outlines the research progress on the preparation of BiVO4 composites and the degradation of quinolone antibiotics from the perspective of improving the catalysis and degrading the efficiency mechanism of BiVO4 composites.

TiO2 NPs-immobilized silica granules: New insight for nano catalyst fixation for hydrogen generation and sustained wastewater treatment

In heterogeneous catalytic processes, immobilization of the functional material over a proper support is a vital solution for reusing and/or avoiding a secondary pollution problem. The study introduces a novel approach for immobilizing R25 NPs on the surface of silica granules using hydrothermal treatment followed by calcination process. Due to the privileged characteristics of the subcritical water, during the hydrothermal treatment process, the utilized R25 NPs were partially dissolved and precipitated on the surface of the silica granules. Calcination at high temperature (700°C) resulted in improving the attachment forces. The structure of the newly proposed composite was approved by 2D and 3D optical microscope images, XRD and EDX analyses. The functionalized silica granules were used in the form of a packed bed for continuous removal of methylene blue dye. The results indicated that the TiO2:sand ratio has a considerable effect on the shape of the dye removal breakthrough curve as the exhaustion point, corresponding to ~ 95% removal, was 12.3, 17.4 and 21.3 min for 1:20, 1:10 and 1:5 metal oxides ratio, respectively. Furthermore, the modified silica granules could be exploited as a photocatalyst for hydrogen generation from sewage wastewaters under direct sunlight with a good rate; 75×10-3 mmol/s. Interestingly, after the ease separation of the used granules, the performance was not affected. Based on the obtained results, the 170°C is the optimum hydrothermal treatment temperature. Overall, the study opens a new avenue for immobilization of functional semiconductors on the surface of sand granules.

2D defect-engineered Ag-doped γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4: The effect of noble metal doping and oxygen vacancies on exciton-triggering photocatalysis production of singlet oxygen

The selectivity of singlet oxygen (1O2) holds promising applications in complex environmental systems due to its ability to preferentially oxidize target pollutants. Usually, 1O2 in photocatalytic systems is generated via the electron transfer pathway and •O2- plays an important role as an intermediate, while the exciton-based energy transfer pathway for 1O2 generation has been less studied. Here, a 2D Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 with oxygen vacancies was designed which was capable of generating 1O2 by an exciton-based energy transfer-dominated approach, as strongly demonstrated by the results of steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy and phosphorescence spectroscopy. In the Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst system, Ag acted as an electron mediator to promote not only the generation of free carriers but also the generation of singlet excitons, while the appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies further promotes the exciton-triggering photocatalysis production of 1O2. The Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 could degrade 99.4% of sulfadiazine within 90 min, and 1O2 played an important role in the degradation of sulfadiazine, as shown by EPR and active species capture experiments. Ecotoxicity predictions indicated that the main byproducts of sulfadiazine degradation by Ag-γ-Fe2O3/BiVO4 were low in toxicity. The prepared photocatalysts provide a new idea for obtaining 1O2 and designing photocatalysts with selectivity.

An optimization strategy for photo-Fenton-like catalysts: Based on crystal plane engineering of BiVO4 and electron transfer properties of 0D CQDs

Herein, we report a novel Cu₂(OH)₃ F/CQDs-BiVO₄ composite photo-Fenton-like system, which used BiVO₄ and Cu₂(OH)₃F as electron donor and acceptor, respectively, and achieved efficient electron transfer between them through the electron bridging effect of Carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The material exhibited excellent ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal efficiency in the photo-Fenton-like coupled system. Cu₂(OH)₃ F/CQDs-BiVO₄ had an incredibly fast response rate, eliminating 98.1% of CIP from the solution in just 1 h, according to the reaction kinetics. Exploratory tests proved that the catalyst kept up a sufficient level of activity across a wide pH range of 3-11 and in the presence of various anions. The activity, morphology, and crystal structure of the samples did not appreciably alter after five recycles. Finally, a possible reaction mechanism was also proposed based on the band structure, position and reaction species.

Embedding Cu3P quantum dots onto BiOCl nanosheets as a 0D/2D S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic antibiotic degradation

The development of highly efficient photocatalysts is vital for solvinge the problem of environmental pollution. In this study, a novel zero-/two-dimensional (0D/2D) S-scheme heterojunction was fabricated by integrating 0D copper phosphide (Cu₃P) quantum dots (QDs) with a size in the range of 3-8 nm onto 2D bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) nanosheets using a self-assembly tactic. The Cu₃P/BiOCl presented intimate interface contact and high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of antibiotics (tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), oxytetracycline, ofloxacin). The optimal sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic TC degradation, with a total removal rate of 86% after 6 min under full-spectrum irradiation, which was higher than that of compared to individual BiOCl. The improved activity of the Cu₃P/BiOCl heterojunction was attributed to the enhanced separation of the photogenerated carriers due to the S-scheme mode which can promote the recombination of useless photogenerated carriers and maintain photogenerated carriers with stronger redox potentials for photocatalytic reaction. In addition, employing Cu₃P QDs and BiOCl nanosheets to construct an S-scheme composite can offer abundant active sites for antibiotic degradation. In brief, this study demonstrates that Cu₃P QDs are an effective cocatalyst for degrading organic pollutants, which provides novel inspiration for the future design of green recycling photocatalysts for wastewater remediation.

Removal of ofloxacin from water by natural ilmenite-biochar composite: A study on the synergistic adsorption mechanism of multiple effects

The preparation cost is one of the major constraints for adsorbent applied to practical situations. Here, a novel, economical and eco-friendly ilmenite biochar composite (ILM-BC) was successfully prepared by co-cracking of natural ilmenite and corn stover for the removal ofloxacin from water. The adsorption experiments indicated that the removal ofloxacin by ILM-BC was chemisorption and belonged to a spontaneous and entropy-increasing heat absorption process. Among composites, ILM-BC5 had superior adsorption capacity and stability, with a removal rate 1.6 times higher than that of biochar, and it could remove more than 90% ofloxacin in the pH range of 2-10. Multiple characterization results indicated that the adsorption of ILM-BC was the result of the synergistic effect of pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. The introduction of ilmenite promoted hydrogen bonding formation and π-π interactions by enriching -OH and -COO on the surface of ILM-BC, which could enhance the adsorption capacity of ILM-BC.

Iron-doped g-C3N4 catalysts fabricated by forming Fe–N moieties with outstanding photo-Fenton activity toward tetracycline degradation

Porous Fe-doped g-C3N4 photo-Fenton catalysts are successfully prepared by a convenient one-step pyrolysis strategy and applied in the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride.
