Demulsification of oily wastewater using a nano carbon black modified with polyethyleneimine

Facile Synthesis of Novel Magnetic Janus Graphene Oxide for Efficient and Recyclable Demulsification of Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Nanoparticles have been widely applied to treat emulsion-containing wastewater in the form of chemical demulsifiers, such as SiO2, Fe3O4, and graphene oxide (GO). Owing to their asymmetric structures and selective adsorption, Janus nanoparticles show greater application potential in many fields. In the present work, the novel magnetic Janus graphene oxide (MJGO) nanoparticle was successfully prepared by grafting magnetic Fe3O4 to the surface of the JGO, and its demulsifying ability to treat a crude oil-in-water emulsion was evaluated. The MJGO structure and its magnetic intensity were verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and magnetization saturation (MS) tests. Compared with GO and JGO, MJGO displayed the superior efficiency (>96%) to demulsify the crude oil-in-water emulsion, which can be attributed to the reduced electrostatic repulsion between MJGO and the emulsion droplets. Furthermore, the effects of pH and temperature on the demulsification performance of MJGO were also studied. Lastly, the recyclability of MJGO largely reduced the cost of demulsifiers in separating crude oil and water. The current research presents an efficient and recyclable demulsifier, which provides a new perspective for the structural design of nanomaterials and their application in the field of demulsification.

Enhanced management and antifouling performance of a novel NiFe-LDH@MnO2/PVDF hybrid membrane for efficient oily wastewater treatment

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have gained significant recognition for their facile synthesis and super-hydrophilic two-dimensional (2D) structure to fabricate antifouling membranes for oily wastewater separation. However, conventional PVDF membranes, due to their hydrophobic nature and inert matrix, often exhibit insufficient permeance and compatibility. In this study, a novel NiFe-LDH@MnO2/PVDF membrane was synthesized using ultrasonic, redox, and microwave-hydrothermal processes. This innovative approach cultivated grass-like NiFe-LDH@MnO2 nanoparticles within an inert PVDF matrix, promoting the growth of highly hydrophilic composites. The presence of NiFe-LDH@MnO2 resulted in pronounced enhancements in surface morphology, interfacial wettability, and oil rejection for the fabricated membrane. The optimal NiFe-LDH@MnO2/PVDF-2 membrane exhibited an extremely high pure water flux (1364 L m-2•h-1), and increased oil rejection (from 81.2% to 93.5%) without sacrificing water permeation compared to the original PVDF membrane. Additionally, the NiFe-LDH@MnO2/PVDF membrane demonstrated remarkable antifouling properties, evident by an exceptional fouling resistance ratio of 96.8% following slight water rinsing. Mechanistic insights into the enhanced antifouling performance were elucidated through a comparative "semi-immersion" investigation. The facile synthesis method, coupled with the improved membrane performance, highlights the potential application prospects of this hybrid membrane in emulsified oily wastewater treatment and environmental remediation.

Amine-functionalized cotton for the treatment of oily wastewater

Common commercial demulsifiers are typically made from ethylene oxide and propylene oxide. The production process is dangerous and complex, with poor adaptability and high cost. In this work, cotton modified with polyethylene polyamine was utilized as a demulsifier for the treatment of oily wastewater. The chemical structure and morphology of the as-prepared sample (CPN) were characterized by IR spectrum and SEM. The effect of CPN dosage, pH value, and salinity on the demulsification performance of oily wastewater was explored through the bottle tests. The results showed that the light transmittance of separated water was 81.7% and the corresponding deoiling rate was 98.5% when a CPN dosage of 25 mg/L was used at room temperature for 30 min. The interfacial properties were also systematically investigated, and the results indicated that CPN had better interfacial activity and a stronger reduction capability of interfacial tension compared to asphaltenes. The finding initiated and accelerated the demulsification process of oily wastewater. Based on the outstanding performance of this biomass-derived demulsifier, it shows promising potential for application in the treatment of oily wastewater.

A Novel Demulsifier with Strong Hydrogen Bonding for Effective Breaking of Water-in-Heavy Oil Emulsions

In the heavy petroleum industry, the development of efficient demulsifiers for the effective breaking of interfacially active asphaltenes (IAA)-stabilized water-in-heavy oil (W/HO) emulsions is a highly attractive but challenging goal. Herein, a novel nitrogen and oxygen containing demulsifier (JXGZ) with strong hydrogen bonding has been successfully synthesized through combining esterification, polymerization and amidation. Bottle tests indicated that JXGZ is effectual in quickly demulsifying the IAA-stabilized W/HO emulsions; complete dehydration (100%) to the emulsions could be achieved in 4 min at 55 °C using 400 ppm of JXGZ. In addition, the effects of demulsifier concentration, temperature and time on the demulsification performance of JXGZ are systematically analyzed. Demulsification mechanisms reveal that the excellent demulsification performance of JXGZ is attributed to the strong hydrogen bonding between JXGZ and water molecules (dual swords synergistic effect under hydrogen bond reconstruction). The interaction of the "dual swords synergistic effect" generated by two types of hydrogen bonds can quickly break the non-covalent interaction force (π-π stacking, Van der Waals force, hydrogen bonds) of IAA at the heavy oil-water interface, quickly promote the aggregation and coalescence of water molecules and finally achieve the demulsification of W/HO emulsions. These findings indicate that the JXGZ demulsifier shows engineering application prospects in the demulsification of heavy oil-water emulsions, and this work provides the key information for developing more efficient chemical demulsifiers suitable for large-scale industrial applications.

One-step synthesis of Enteromorpha graphene aerogel modified by hydrophilic polyethylene glycol achieving high evaporation efficiency and pollutant tolerance

Photothermal evaporation using solar energy is a sustainable way to produce fresh water from seawater. Aiming to explore functional materials as a solar-energized evaporator with enhanced evaporation rate and pollutant tolerance, this study was to synthesize a self-floating composite graphene aerogel (GA) doped with Enteromorpha and modified polyethylene glycol (PEG), named as PEGA using solar energy for desalination. Physio-chemical properties and evaporative mechanism of PEGA were experimentally investigated and analyzed with respect to molecular weight, PEG dosage, and ratio of Enteromorpha and graphene oxide. Experimental data revealed that the modification of PEG improved hydrophilic functional ability of PEGA, resulting in increasing the evaporation rate and photothermal conversion efficiency up to 2.55 kg/(m²·h) and 105.71 %, respectively. The ion removal rate of seawater exceeds 99.99 % via the PEGA conducted solar evaporation. Furthermore, PEGA possessed an excellent property of salinity emulsion pollution tolerance. Particularly, the evaporation rate of the PEG-modified biomass-based aerogel was 2.84 kg/(m²·h) in a 15 wt% NaCl solution (1 sun, 6 h) and 2.50 kg/(m²·h) at 1 h. The formation of hydrogen bonds between -OH of PEG and water molecules assist to conduct water along the graphene matrix to improve water evaporation. The cost of the graphene aerogel modified by Enteromorpha was reduced by 38.88 % less than the original graphene aerogel. The results from this study will greatly promote the application of graphene aerogel for desalination via solar evaporation.

Special wettable Azadirachta indica leaves like microarchitecture mesh filtration membrane produced by galvanic replacement reaction for layered oil/water separation

The oil/water separation has received significant attention due to its critical environmental impact. The special wettable surfaces are highly desired to deal with the oil/water mixtures. This work demonstrates a simple two-step method to develop a superhydrophobic Azadirachta indica leaves like Ag-decorated electrochemically copper-coated stainless-steel mesh (SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh) for efficient separation of oil/water mixtures. In the first step, the electrodeposition of the copper took place on the mesh surface at a suitable applied potential. In the second step, the galvanic replacement reaction between the Ag⁺ and electrodeposited Cu produced the fascinating superhydrophobic Ag leaves on the mesh surface. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh was thoroughly characterized by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), elemental mapping, surface wettability analysis, and the contact analyzer. The morphological analysis has shown the unique leafy structures of the reduced Ag on the surface of the mesh. The XPS analysis has confirmed that most of the Ag present on the surface is in zerovalent form. The combination of the electrodeposition and the displacement reaction between the copper and the silver turned the surface superhydrophobic, and the water contact angle was significantly improved from 115° to 158°. The designed SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent selectivity for oil in oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.1% with an exceptionally high flux of 8963 L m^-2h^-1. The SH-AIL-Ag-EC-Cu-Mesh has shown excellent reusability, and after 15 cycles of separation, no significant decrease in the oil/water separation efficiency was observed.

Treating mechanical washing wastewater with iron-in-oil characteristics by changing the fate of iron

The mechanical washing wastewater contained a large amount of oil, and the iron wrapped in the oil was slowly released into water. This caused the effluent quality to fluctuate, causing common polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) to ineffectively remove the water-in-oil. The method uses Ca²⁺ to demulsify and ClO_x^- to destroy the water-in-oil structure, which releases Fe from the oil droplets. The active oxygen produced by NaClO_x further converts Fe²⁺ into Fe³⁺ and then combines with NaOH to form Fe(OH)₃-flocs core, which improves the flocculation efficiency of PAC. The optimal ratio was approximately 400 μL of NaClO_x, 200 μL of 1 mol L^-1 CaO, and 12 mL of 12.8 g L^-1 PAC. The oil removal rate reached 99.88% and the residue density was 178.42 mg L^-1. The maximum Fe and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rates were close to 49.2 and 99.89%, respectively. In field applications, wastewater should be acidified first, and acidification oxidation is more effective than direct oxidation. In short, a novel way for treating mechanically washed wastewater with iron-in-oil characteristics by changing the environmental fate of iron is provided.

Nano-modification of carboxylated polyether for enhanced room temperature demulsification of oil-water emulsions: Synthesis, performance and mechanisms

Oil-water emulsions separation is frequently required considering the production and environmental issues. Herein, a nano-modification strategy has been proposed for carboxylated poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) block polyether (mANP) using epoxy-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂-GPTMS), achieving the construction of a highly efficient demulsifier (M-mANP). Bottle tests showed that M-mANP could separate over 98.5% of water from the asphaltene-stabilized water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion at mANP concentration of 150 ppm within 2 min at room temperature. The demulsification efficiency for crude oil-in-water emulsion was nearly 100%. According to interfacial tension and wettability tests, the nano-modification endows M-mANP with good amphiphilicity and high interfacial activity, which enables M-mANP to rapidly adsorb at the oil-water interface. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that abundant oxygen-containing groups (hydroxyl, ether bond, ester and carboxyl groups, Fe-O and Si-O bond) in M-mANP could strengthen the interaction with water, facilitating the replacement of asphaltene molecules at interfacial film. Observation of demulsification process by microscope reveals that the nano-size promotes M-mANP to bridge small dispersed droplets, enhancing the flocculation and coalescence of droplets. The nano-modified carboxylated polyether with outstanding demulsification ability shows a promising application for the treatment of different oil-water emulsions.

Fe3O4@PDA@PEI Core-Shell Microspheres as a Novel Magnetic Sorbent for the Rapid and Broad-Spectrum Separation of Bacteria in Liquid Phase

Bacterial infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality to humans worldwide. Thus, a method for nonspecific, sensitive, and rapid enrichment of such bacteria is essential for bacteria detection and treatment. This study demonstrates a self-made core-shell Fe3O4@Polydopamine@Polyethyleneimine magnetic beads (Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs) with a high density positive charge-based magnetic separation scheme for the broad-spectrum rapid enrichment of microorganisms in the liquid phase. MBs with a high-density positive charge have a strong electrostatic attraction to most microorganisms in nature. Our scheme is as follows: (1) wrapping dopamine (DA) on the iron oxide through self-polymerization and wrapping PEI on the outermost shell layer in a mode of crosslinking with the PDA; (2) subsequently, the Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs were used to concentrate microorganisms from the sample solution; (3) performing magnetic separation and calculating the adsorption efficiency. The as-prepared Fe3O4@PDA@PEI MBs composite was carefully characterized by zeta potential analysis, Value stream-mapping (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transforms infrared spectrometry (FT-IR). In this study, both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria could be captured in three minutes through electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, the adsorption efficiency on gram-negative (>98%) is higher than that on gram-positive (>95%), allowing for a simple, rapid assay to enrich organisms in resource-limited settings.
