An update on polyethylene and biodegradable plastic mulch films and their impact on the environment

The color of biodegradable mulch films is associated with differences in peanut yield and bacterial communities

Biodegradable mulch films (BDMs) are increasingly used in agricultural production as desirable alternatives to the current widespread use of polyethylene (PE) mulch films in China. However, potential effects of different colors of BDMs on field crop production and microbiomes remain unexplored. Here, the differences in bacterial communities of peanut rhizosphere soil (RS) and bulk soil (BS) under non-mulching (CK), PE, and three different colors of BDMs were studied. The results indicated that all treatments could increase the soil temperature, which positively affected the growth of the peanut plants. Moreover, mulching affected the bacterial community structure in RS and BS compared to CK. Furthermore, certain BDM treatments significantly enriched N-fixing bacteria (Bradyrhizobium and Mesorhizobium) and functional groups, increased the closeness of bacterial networks, and harbored more beneficial bacteria as keystone taxa in the RS. This in turn facilitated the growth and development of the peanut plants under field conditions. Our study provides new insights into the micro-ecological effects of mulch films, which can be affected by both the mulch type and color. The observed effects are likely caused by temperature and prevalence of specific microbial functions under the employed films and could guide the development of optimized mulching materials.

Film mulching counteracts the adverse effects of mild moisture deficiency, and improves the quality and yield of Cyperus esculentus. L grass and tuber in the oasis area of Tarim Basin

Introduction

Plastic film mulching (PFM) and deficit irrigation (DI) are vital water-saving approaches in arid agriculture. Cyperus esculentus is a significant crop in dry zones. However, scant data exists on the impacts of these water-saving methods on C. esculentus yield and quality.

Method

Using randomized block experiment design. Three irrigation strategies were tested: CK (standard irrigation), RW20 (20% water reduction), and RW40 (40% water reduction). Mulchin treatments included film mulching (FM) and no film mulching (NFM).

Results

Results revealed substantial effects of film mulching and drip irrigation on soil nutrients and physical properties, with minor influence on grass, root, and tuber stoichiometry. PF treatment, DI treatments, and their interaction significantly affected C. esculentus forage and tuber yields. Initially, grass and tuber yields increased and then decreased with reduced irrigation. The highest yields were under RW20 (3716.31 and 4758.19 kg/ha). FM increased grass and tuber yield by 17.99% and 8.46%, respectively, over NFM. The water reduction augmented the biomass distribuiton of the leaf and root, while reducing the tuber biomass in NFM. FM significantely impacted grass ether extract content, while reduced water influenced grass and tuber crude protein and tuber ether extract content. Mild water stress increased ether extract, crude protein, and soluble matter in grass and tubers, while excessive RW decreased them.

Conclusion

Integrating soil traits, nutrients, yield, and quality, findings indicate C. esculentus yield and quality primarily hinge on soil water content, pond hydrogenase, and electrical conductivity. Based on this results, the recommended strategy is to reduce irrigation by 20% for cultivating C. esculentus in this area.

Agroecological transition: towards a better understanding of the impact of ecology-based farming practices on soil microbial ecotoxicology

Alternative farming systems have developed since the beginning of industrial agriculture. Organic, biodynamic, conservation farming, agroecology and permaculture, all share a grounding in ecological concepts and a belief that farmers should work with nature rather than damage it. As ecology-based agricultures rely greatly on soil organisms to perform the functions necessary for agricultural production, it is thus important to evaluate the performance of these systems through the lens of soil organisms, especially soil microbes. They provide numerous services to plants, including growth promotion, nutrient supply, tolerance to environmental stresses and protection against pathogens. An overwhelming majority of studies confirm that ecology-based agricultures are beneficial for soil microorganisms. However, three practices were identified as posing potential ecotoxicological risks: the recycling of organic waste products, plastic mulching, and pest and disease management with biopesticides. The first two because they can be a source of contaminants; the third because of potential impacts on non-target microorganisms. Consequently, developing strategies to allow a safe recycling of the increasingly growing organic matter stocks produced in cities and factories, and the assessment of the ecotoxicological impact of biopesticides on non-target soil microorganisms, represent two challenges that ecology-based agricultural systems will have to face in the future.

Comparative evaluation of soil accumulation of light stabilizers from biodegradable mulching films versus conventional polyethylene ones

Light stabilizers are commonly used as additives in mulching films and have environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and ecotoxicity. However, their occurrence and distribution in mulching films and accumulation in mulched soils are seldom reported. This study firstly presents a comprehensive screening of 19 light stabilizers in 65 mulching films and 30 farmland soils collected in China, of which five and eight light stabilizers were 100% detected, respectively. The light stabilizer concentration in biodegradable mulching films was significantly higher than that in polyethylene ones, with median concentrations of 1.75 × 106 μg/kg and 4.86 × 103 μg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between the light stabilizer concentration in mulching films and in soils. This indicates that mulching films play a critical role in the accumulation of light stabilizers in farmland soils, and biodegradable mulching films significantly increase benzotriazole light stabilizers in soils. Although the light stabilizer concentration in farmland soil is relatively low, the sustainable quantities of mulching film input and the long-term accumulation will still pose a threat to the ecological environment and organism health. Consequently, our work reveals the occurrence and environmental risk of light stabilizers in mulching films and farmland soils and brings attention to light stabilizers in the soil environment.

Biodegradation of polyethylene in digestive gland homogenates of marine invertebrates

Вiotic factors may be the driving force of plastic fragmentation along with abiotic factors. Since understanding the processes of biodegradation and biological depolymerization of plastic is important, a new methodological approach was proposed in this study to investigate the role of marine invertebrate digestive enzymes in plastic biodegradation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of enzymatic biodegradation of polyethylene fragments in the digestive gland homogenate of marine invertebrates differing in their feeding type (Strongylocentrotus nudus, Patiria pectinifera, Mizuhopecten yessoensis). Significant changes are found in the functional groups of the polymer after 3 days of incubation in the digestive gland homogenates of the studied marine invertebrates. A significant increase in the calculated CI (carbonyl index) and COI (сarbon-oxygen index) indices compared to the control sample was observed. The results suggest that digestive enzymes of studied organisms may play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of plastic.

Zinc oxide nanoparticle-reinforced pectin/starch functionalized films: A sustainable solution for biodegradable packaging

Environmental pollution caused by non-biodegradable plastic pollutants adversely affects various ecosystems. This study proposes the development of novel functional and biodegradable films based on corn starch (CST) and pectin (PEC) containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) from the casting method. The films exhibited processability, transparency, low water vapor permeation, and desirable mechanical properties for food packaging and coating applications. The ZnONPs acted as a plasticizer, enhancing the film elongation at the break, increasing the pec25-1 (PEC 25 wt% and ZnONPs 1 wt%) elongation from 79.85 to 162.32 %. The improved film elasticity supported by ZnONPs reduced the material stiffness. However, the films still demonstrated an average tensile strength (0.69 MPa) 17-fold higher than the tensile strength (0.04 MPa) of the non-biodegradable commercial film based on poly(vinyl chloride). Furthermore, the ZnONPs enhanced the UV-blocking capabilities of the films, leading to wettable materials with water contact angles lower than 90°. The films showed high biodegradation rates under natural disposal conditions. The results indicated that the pec25-1/ZnONPs film is a promising eco-friendly coating in food preservation due to its biodegradability, suitable mechanical properties, low water vapor permeability, and UV-blocking properties.

Deep insights into biodegradability mechanism and growth cycle adaptability of polylactic acid/hyperbranched cellulose nanocrystal composite mulch

The widespread use of petroleum-based plastic mulch in agriculture has accelerated white and microplastic pollution while posing a severe agroecological challenge due to its difficulty in decomposing in the natural environment. However, endowing mulch film with degradability and growth cycle adaptation remains elusive due to the inherent non-degradability of petroleum-based plastics severely hindering its applications. This work reports polylactic acids hyperbranched composite mulch (PCP) and measured biodegradation behavior under burial soil, seawater, and ultraviolet (UV) aging to understand the biodegradation kinetics and to increase their sustainability in the agriculture field. Due to high interfacial interactions between polymer and nanofiler, the resultant PCP mulch significantly enhances crystallization ability, hydrophilicity, and mechanical properties. PCP mulch can be scalable-manufactured to exhibit modulated degradation performance under varying degradation conditions and periods while concurrently enhancing crop growth (wheat). Thus, such mulch with excellent performance can reduce labor costs and the environmental impact of waste mulch disposal to replace traditional mulch for sustainable agricultural production.

Microplastics in aquaculture systems: Occurrence, ecological threats and control strategies

With the intensification of microplastic pollution globally, aquaculture environments also face risks of microplastic contamination through various pathways such as plastic fishing gear. Compared to wild aquatic products, cultured aquatic products are more susceptible to microplastic exposure through fishing tackle, thus assessing the impacts of microplastics on farmed species and human health. However, current research on microplastic pollution and its ecological effects in aquaculture environments still remains insufficient. This article comprehensively summarizes the pollution characteristics and interrelationships of microplastics in aquaculture environments. We analyzed the influence of microplastics on the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry. Then, the potential hazards of microplastics on pond ecosystems and consumer health were elucidated. The strategies for removing microplastics in aquaculture environments are also discussed. Finally, an outlook on the current challenge and the promising opportunities in this area was proposed. This review aims to evaluate the value of assessing microplastic pollution in aquaculture environments and provide guidance for the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

Organic fertilizer facilitates the soil microplastic surface degradation and enriches the diversity of bacterial biofilm

The land-use of organic fertilizers is considered as an important sustainable method for resource utilization, which may have an impact on the microplastic behaviors in the soil. Here, a 240-d dark culture experiment was conducted to reveal the degradation and biofilm characteristics of degradable and refractory granule microplastics in soil and soil-fertilizer systems. The results indicated that microplastics generally exhibited a weak weight loss as well as a specific etiolation on the surface after the culture, especially polyvinyl-chloride and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). Increase in carbon-oxygen functional groups and the changes of oxygen/carbon ratios were noticed, which implied that oxidation and degradation occurred on the surface of microplastics during the cultural process. The changes were more intense on the degradable PHA, and the fertilized-soil treatment than those of the refractory microplastics and the pure soil. Moreover, the addition of organic fertilizers enriched the community diversity of bacterial biofilm on multiple microplastic surfaces. In this regard, the animal fertilizers provided a stronger effect than the plant fertilizers. Overall, the soil, fertilizer and microplastic types affected the community structure and diversity of bacterial biofilm. The outcomes of this study would provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of organic matters for agricultural soil applications.

Long-term mulching of biodegradable plastic film decreased fungal necromass C with potential consequences for soil C storage

The use of biodegradable plastic film mulching as a replacement for polyethylene plastic film has gained recognition due to its reduced environmental pollution. However, its impact on soil environment is not yet fully understood. Here, we compared the effects of different plastic film mulching on the accumulation of microbial necromass carbon (C) and its contribution to soil total C in 2020 and 2021. Results showed that biodegradable plastic film mulching decreased the accumulation of fungal necromass C compared to no plastic film mulching and polyethylene film mulching. However, the bacterial necromass C and soil total C were not affected by the plastic film mulching. Biodegradable plastic film mulching decreased the soil dissolved organic carbon content after maize harvest. Random forest models suggested that soil dissolved organic C, soil pH and the ratio of soil dissolved organic C to microbial biomass C were important factors in regulating the accumulation of fungal necromass C. The abundance of the fungal genus Mortierella was also found to have a significant positive contribution to the accumulation of fungal necromass C. These findings suggest that biodegradable plastic film mulching may decrease the accumulation of fungal necromass C by changing substrate availability, soil pH, and fungal community composition, with potential implications for soil C storage.

A Review of Biodegradable Plastics: Chemistry, Applications, Properties, and Future Research Needs

Environmental concerns over waste plastics' effect on the environment are leading to the creation of biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics may serve as a promising approach to manage the issue of environmental accumulation of plastic waste in the ocean and soil. Biodegradable plastics are the type of polymers that can be degraded by microorganisms into small molecules (e.g., H2O, CO2, and CH4). However, there are misconceptions surrounding biodegradable plastics. For example, the term "biodegradable" on product labeling can be misconstrued by the public to imply that the product will degrade under any environmental conditions. Such misleading information leads to consumer encouragement of excessive consumption of certain goods and increased littering of products labeled as "biodegradable". This review not only provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art biodegradable plastics but also clarifies the definitions and various terms associated with biodegradable plastics, including oxo-degradable plastics, enzyme-mediated plastics, and biodegradation agents. Analytical techniques and standard test methods to evaluate the biodegradability of polymeric materials in alignment with international standards are summarized. The review summarizes the properties and industrial applications of previously developed biodegradable plastics and then discusses how biomass-derived monomers can create new types of biodegradable polymers by utilizing their unique chemical properties from oxygen-containing functional groups. The terminology and methodologies covered in the paper provide a perspective on directions for the design of new biodegradable polymers that possess not only advanced performance for practical applications but also environmental benefits.

Effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on transport of non-degradable agricultural film microplastics

Mulch film microplastics (MPs) could act as a vector for agricultural chemicals due to their long-term presence in farmland environments. As a result, this study focuses on the adsorption mechanism of three neonicotinoids on two typical agricultural film MPs, polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), as well as the effects of neonicotinoids on the MPs transport in quartz sand saturated porous media. The findings revealed that the adsorption of neonicotinoids on PE and PP was a combination of physical and chemical processes, including hydrophobic, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding. Acidity and appropriate ionic strength (IS) were favorable conditions for neonicotinoid adsorption of on MPs. The results of column experiments showed that the presence of neonicotinoids, particularly at low concentrations (0.5 mmol L^-1), could promote the transport of PE and PP in the column by improving the electrostatic interaction and hydrophilic repulsion of particles. The neonicotinoids would be adsorbed on MPs through hydrophobic action preferentially, whereas excessive neonicotinoids could cover the hydrophilic functional groups on the surface of MPs. Neonicotinoids reduced the response of PE and PP transport behavior to pH changes. 0.005 mol L^-1 NaCl ameliorated the migration of MPs by increasing their stability. Because of its highest hydration ability and the bridging effect of Mg²⁺, Na⁺ had the most prominent transport promoting effect on PE and PP in MPs-neonicotinoid. This study shows that the increased environmental risk caused by the coexistence of microplastic particles and agricultural chemicals is unneglectable.

Microplastics in agricultural soils in China: Sources, impacts and solutions

The detection of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils has raised alarms on their potential impacts on agricultural production, particularly in China where agriculture has great importance for domestic consumption and export. This review aims to present the abundance, sources and impacts of MPs in the agricultural soils of China. It has the novelty of synthesizing sustainable agronomic practices to reduce MPs pollution of agricultural soils based on the sources identified. According to the extant study, the abundance of MPs in the agricultural soils in China ranged from 4.94 items/kg in the lower reaches of Yangtze River to 40,800 items/kg in Yunnan Province. The MPs were predominantly ≤1 mm and were mainly composed of fragments, films and fibers. Polyethylene and polypropylene MPs were most reported. Plastic mulching films were the most significant source of MPs in agricultural soils, followed by abandoned greenhouses and the use of organic fertilizers containing fugitive MPs or whose sources were often MPs-polluted. MPs were found to alter soil physicochemical properties for instance, water flow, water-stable aggregates, soil aggregation, soil pH, bulk density and nutrient contents. MPs also affect soil biota through changing the richness and diversity of soil microbial community while retarding growth and disrupting physiological functions of soil macrofauna. The effects of MPs on crops vary and range from alteration of biomass, metabolism and nutrient demands to impacted photosynthesis. Sustainable solutions include the use of grass clippings - straw mix as organic mulches, the use of compost as soil amendment in conjunction with grass-straw mix and incorporation of weed-suppressing biomass into compost, the use of jute and biodegradable plastics for greenhouses, proper decommissioning of abandoned greenhouses as well as setting standards for allowable MPs contents in organic fertilizers and irrigation water.

Biodegradability of polyethylene by efficient bacteria from the guts of plastic-eating waxworms and investigation of its degradation mechanism

Polyethylene (PE) has been regarded as non-biodegradable for decades, and the evidence for its degradation by bacteria remains unclear in the literature. Waxworms have recently gained attention for their ability to degrade natural long-chain polymers and synthetic plastic. This study aims to explore the potential of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)-degrading bacteria from the gut symbionts of lesser waxworm (Achroia grisella) larvae for the effective biodegradation of LEDP. Two bacterial isolates (LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2) exhibited the greatest reduction in tensile strength among all isolates (P < 0.0001), reaching 51.3% and 58.3%, respectively. The bacterial strains LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2 stand for molecularly identified species, Citrobacter freundii and Bacillus sp., respectively. After 5 days of incubation, the cell density of LDPE-DB1 and LDPE-DB2 reached 2.20 × 10⁸ and 1.8 × 10⁸ CFU/mL, respectively. However, after 30 days of incubation, the cell density reached 7.3 × 10⁸ and 5.9 × 10⁸, respectively. The formed cavities indicate the high activity of the isolated bacteria from Achroia grisella larvae where the cavities reach a depth of up to 1.2 µm. The findings of this study demonstrated the presence of LDPE-degrading bacteria in Achroia grisella and provide promising evidence for the biodegradation of plastic waste management in the environment.
