Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate by magnetic hybrid CuFe2O4@N-rGO for excellent sulfamethoxazole degradation: Interaction of CuFe2O4 with N-rGO and synergistic catalytic mechanism

Peroxymonosulfate activation by CuMn-LDH for the degradation of bisphenol A: Effect, mechanism, and pathway

The remediation of water contaminated with bisphenol A (BPA) has gained significant attention. In this study, a hydrothermal composite activator of Cu3Mn-LDH containing coexisting phases of cupric nitrate (Cu(NO3)2) and manganous nitrate (Mn(NO3)2) was synthesized. Advanced oxidation processes were employed as an effective approach for BPA degradation, utilizing Cu3Mn-LDH as the catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The synthesis of the Cu3Mn-LDH material was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the characterization data and screening experiments, Cu3Mn-LDH was selected as the best experimental material. Cu3Mn-LDH exhibits remarkable catalytic ability with PMS, demonstrating good degradation efficiency of BPA under neutral and alkaline conditions. With a PMS dosage of 0.25 g·L-1 and Cu3Mn-LDH dosage of 0.10 g·L-1, 10 mg·L-1 BPA (approximately 17.5 μM) can be completely degraded within 40 min, of which the TOC removal reached 95%. The reactive oxygen species present in the reaction system were analyzed by quenching experiments and EPR. Results showed that sulfate free radicals (SO4•-), hydroxyl free radicals (•OH), superoxide free radicals (•O2-), and nonfree radical mono-oxygen were generated, while mono-oxygen played a key role in degrading BPA. Cu3Mn-LDH exhibits excellent reproducibility, as it can still completely degrade BPA even after four consecutive cycles. The degradation intermediates of BPA were detected by GCMS, and the possible degradation pathways were reasonably predicted. This experiment proposes a nonradical degradation mechanism for BPA and analyzes the degradation pathways. It provides a new perspective for the treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Iron/nitrogen co-doped biochar derived from salvaged cyanobacterial for efficient peroxymonosulfate activation and ofloxacin degradation: Synergistic effect of Fe/N in non-radical path

A green, low-cost, high-performance Fe/N co-doped biochar material (Fe-N@C) was synthesized using salvaged cyanobacteria without other extra precursors for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and ofloxacin (OFX) degradation. With the increased pyrolysis temperature, the graphitization degree, the specific surface area and the corresponding groups like OH, COO etc. for Fe-N@C tended to increase, resulting in a greater OFX adsorption. However, the total amount of Fe-NX and graphitic nitrogen groups in the Fe-N@C composites was firstly increased and then decreased, which reached the highest at 800 °C (Fe-N@C-800). All these changes of functional species ascribed to the strong interaction between Fe, N and C led to the highest defect degree of Fe-N@C-800, resulting the highest OFX removal efficiency of 95.0 %. OFX removal experiments indicated the adsorption process promoted the total OFX degradation for different functional groups on Fe-N@C composites separately dominated the process of OFX adsorption and PMS catalysis. Radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements proved free radical and non-free radical pathways participated in Fe-N@C/PMS system. The non-free radicals based on 1O2 and high-valent iron-oxo species played a more important role in OFX degradation, leading to the minimal effect of co-existing anions and the high universality for other antibiotic pollutants. Fe-NX was utilized as the main catalytic sites and graphitic nitrogen contributed more to the electron transfer for PMS activation, whose synergistic effect efficiently facilitated OFX degradation. Finally, the possible degradation route of OFX in the Fe-N@C-800/PMS system was proposed. All these results will provide the new insights into the intrinsic mechanism of Fe/N species in carbon-based materials for PMS activation.

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate by CoMg2Mn-LDO for the degradation of orange Ⅱ: The important synergy of Mg

Advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has aroused extensive discussion in the degradation of organic pollutants due to the strong oxidative ability of SO4•-. Great attention has been paid to developing transition metal catalysts for PMS activation. Still, few studies focused on the co-catalysis effect of non-redox metals. To study the co-catalysis of Mg and develop a more efficient metal catalyst, the CoMg2Mn-LDO was prepared by a co-precipitation method accompanied by calcination. The material showed an excellent ability for PMS activation. 97.1% of Orange Ⅱ was degraded within 15 min with the reaction rate constant (kobs) of 0.539 min-1 when pH equals 6.7, the dosages of CoMg2Mn-LDO and PMS were 90 mg L-1 and 100 mg L-1, respectively. By contrast, the value of kobs was 0.375 min-1 for the system of Co3Mn-LDO/PMS at the same experimental conditions. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments results proved the existence of O2•-, SO4•- and HO• in the CoMg2Mn-LDO/PMS system and the dominant role of SO4•- in Orange Ⅱ degradation. The synergistic effects among Co, Mn, and Mg were found to be responsible for the outstanding catalytic ability of CoMg2Mn-LDO. The presence of Mg could not only promote the formation of Mg-HSO5- and CoOH+ complexes but also reduce the leaching of Co and Mn, which accelerated the generation of free radicals and decreased secondary pollution risk. Based on the overall analysis, reasonable activation mechanisms of PMS and possible degradation pathways of Orange Ⅱ in this reaction system were proposed. This work proves that Mg could be applied as an effective co-catalytic element and provides new insight into developing transition metal catalysts for PMS-based AOPs.

ZnS/CuFe2O4/MXene ternary heterostructure photocatalyst for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of azo dyes under visible light: Synergistic effect, mechanism, and application

ZnS/CuFe2O4/MXene (ZSCFOM) composite with ternary heterostructures was prepared by solvothermal methods for the first time to effectively adsorb and photodegrade the azo dyes. ZSCFOM mainly adsorbed azo dyes through the hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, with saturated adsorption capacities of 377 mg g-1 for direct brown M and 390 mg g-1 for direct black RN. ZSCFOM exhibited both characteristics of Schott heterostructure and p-n heterostructure, but it is not a simple superposition of the two heterostructures, but rather achieves better photocatalytic property. ZSCFOM performed a higher separation efficiency of electrons and holes than pure CuFe2O4 and pure ZnS. Under visible light, ZSCFOM was more effective in removing the azo dyes than MXene, CuFe2O4, ZnS, CuFe2O4/MXene, ZnS/MXene, and ZnS/CuFe2O4. The migration pathways of photogenerated carriers in ZSCFOM were inferred as that the electrons were concentrated in MXene and conduction band of ZnS, and holes were gathered in valence band of CuFe2O4. MXene served as a cocatalyst to accelerate the separation of electrons and holes. ZSCFOM mainly degraded DBM and DBRN by catalyzing the generation of holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals. The 100% of 0.05 g L-1 azo dyes were removed by ZSCFOM within 30 min from the environmental water systems.

Magnetic CuFe2O4 nanoparticles anchored on N-doped carbon for activated peroxymonosulfate removal of oxytetracycline from water: Radical and non-radical pathways

In this work, magnetic CuFe₂O₄ was prepared for the removal of oxytetracycline (OTC) by a self-propagating combustion synthesis method. Almost complete degradation (99.65%) of OTC was achieved within 25 min at [OTC]₀ = 10 mg/L, [PMS]₀ = 0.05 mM, CuFe₂O₄ = 0.1 g/L under pH = 6.8 at 25 °C for deionized water. Specially, the addition CO₃^2- and HCO₃^- induced the CO₃•^- appearance enhancing the selective degradation to electron-rich OTC molecule. The prepared CuFe₂O₄ catalyst exhibited desirable OTC removal rate (87.91%) even in hospital wastewater. The reactive substances were analyzed by free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and the results demonstrated that ¹O₂ and •OH were the main active substances. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was used to analyze the intermediates produced during the degradation of OTC and thus to speculate on the possible degradation pathways. Ecotoxicological studies were conducted to unveil large-scale application prospect.

Efficiency and mechanism on photocatalytic degradation of fluoranthene in soil by Z-scheme g-C3N4/α-Fe2O3 photocatalyst under simulated sunlight

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil have potential harm on human health. However, remediation of PAH-contaminated soils through photocatalytic technology remains a challenge. Therefore, the photocatalyst g-C₃N₄/α-Fe₂O₃ was synthesized and applied to photocatalytic degradation of fluoranthene in soil. The physicochemical properties of g-C₃N₄/α-Fe₂O₃ and various degradation parameters, such as catalyst dosage, the ratio of water/soil, and initial pH, were investigated in detail. In soil slurry reaction system (water/soil=10:1, w/w), the optimal degradation efficiency on fluoranthene was 88.7% after simulated sunlight irradiation for 12 h (contaminated soil=2 g, initial fluoranthene concentration=36 mg/kg, catalyst dosage=5%, and pH=6.8), and the photocatalytic degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The degradation efficiency of g-C₃N₄/α-Fe₂O₃ was higher compared with P25. Degradation mechanism analysis showed that •O₂^- and h⁺ are the main active species in photocatalytic degradation process of fluoranthene by g-C₃N₄/α-Fe₂O₃. Coupling g-C₃N₄ and α-Fe₂O₃ enhances the interfacial charge transport capacity via Z-scheme charge transfer route and inhibits the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes of g-C₃N₄ and α-Fe₂O₃, then significantly improves the production of active species and photocatalytic activity. Results showed that photocatalytic treatment of soil by g-C₃N₄/α-Fe₂O₃ is an effective strategy for remediation of soils contaminated by PAHs.

Synergetic Photocatalytic Peroxymonosulfate Oxidation of Benzotriazole by Copper Ferrite Spinel: Factors and Mechanism Analysis

The development of oxidation processes with the efficient generation of powerful radicals is the most interesting and thought-provoking dimension of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. This study reports the successful preparation of a magnetic spinel of CuFe₂O₄ using a facile, non-toxic, and cost-efficient co-precipitation method. The prepared material exhibited a synergetic effect with photocatalytic PMS oxidation, which was effective in degrading the recalcitrant benzotriazole (BTA). Moreover, central composite design (CCD) analysis confirmed that the highest BTA degradation rate reached 81.4% after 70 min of irradiation time under the optimum operating conditions of CuFe₂O₄ = 0.4 g L^-1, PMS = 2 mM, and BTA = 20 mg L^-1. Furthermore, the active species capture experiments conducted in this study revealed the influence of various species, including ^•OH, SO₄^•-, O₂^•-, and h⁺ in the CuFe₂O₄/UV/PMS system. The results showed that SO₄^•- played a predominant role in BTA photodegradation. The combination of photocatalysis and PMS activation enhanced the consumption of metal ions in the redox cycle reactions, thus minimizing metal ion leaching. Additionally, this maintained the reusability of the catalyst with reasonable mineralization efficiency, which reached more than 40% total organic carbon removal after four batch experiments. The presence of common inorganic anions was found to have a retardant effect on BTA oxidation, with the order of retardation following: HCO₃^- > Cl^- > NO₃^- > SO₄^2-. Overall, this work demonstrated a simple and environmentally benign strategy to exploit the synergy between the photocatalytic activity of CuFe₂O₄ and PMS activation for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with widely used industrial chemicals such as BTA.
