Abstract
A highly sensitive and selective HPLC method for the determination of vitamin K vitamers including phylloquinone (PK) and menaquinones (MK-4) in infant formulas is described. The K vitamers were quantified with a fluorescence detector after online post-column electrochemical reduction occurring in a laboratory-made electrochemical reactor (ECR) equipped with platinum plated porous titanium (Pt/Ti) electrodes. The morphology of the electrode showed that the grain size of Pt was homogeneous and well plated on the porous Ti substrate, resulting in largely improved electrochemical reduction efficiency due to the large specific surface area. In addition, the operation parameters such as mobile phase/supporting electrolyte and working potential were optimized. The detection limits of PK and MK-4 were 0.81 and 0.78 ng g-1. Infant formula varying in stages were detected, showing PK ranged from 26.4 to 71.2 µg/100 g, while MK-4 was not detected.

Abstract
Landomycins are angucyclines with promising antineoplastic activity produced by Streptomyces bacteria. The aglycone landomycinone is the distinctive core, while the oligosaccharide chain differs within derivatives. Herein, we report that landomycins spontaneously form Michael adducts with biothiols, including reduced cysteine and glutathione, both cell-free or intracellularly involving the benz[a]anthraquinone moiety of landomycinone. While landomycins generally do not display emissive properties, the respective Michael adducts exerted intense blue fluorescence in a glycosidic chain-dependent manner. This allowed label-free tracking of the short-lived nature of the mono-SH-adduct followed by oxygen-dependent evolution with addition of another SH-group. Accordingly, hypoxia distinctly stabilized the fluorescent mono-adduct. While extracellular adduct formation completely blocked the cytotoxic activity of landomycins, intracellularly it led to massively decreased reduced glutathione levels. Accordingly, landomycin E strongly synergized with glutathione-depleting agents like menadione but exerted reduced activity under hypoxia. Summarizing, landomycins represent natural glutathione-depleting agents and fluorescence probes for intracellular anthraquinone-based angucycline metabolism.

Abstract
Abstract
Microemulsion eluents have been found to have excellent potential uses in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Here, a novel, environmentally benign and simple method using concentration/flow-rate double-gradient elution using a microemulsion eluent was used to separate water- and fat-soluble vitamins simultaneously and rapidly. Preliminary screening experiments were performed to determine the optimum column type, surfactant concentration, co-surfactant to surfactant ratio, oil, mobile phase pH and microemulsion concentration. The resolution and analysis time were simultaneously optimized using concentration/flow-rate double-gradient elution. The optimized method simultaneously separated water- and fat-soluble vitamins using a Venusil ASB C8 column and a combination of isocratic and linear gradient elution modes using a microemulsion mobile phase (solvent A) consisting of 3.5% (w/w) sodium dodecyl sulfate, 10.5% (w/w) n-butanol, 0.8% (w/w) n-octanol and 85.2% (w/w) water and water (solvent B) at pH 2.50. The optimum detection wavelength was 283 nm. The method was validated and used to analyze a solid pharmaceutical sample.

Abstract
Liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) with a triple quadrupole (QqQ) is proposed for determining the vitamin K homologues, phylloquinone (PK), menaquinone-4 (MK) and menadione (MD), in vegetables. The analytes were isolated from the samples (1-1.5 g) by ultrasound assisted extraction using acetonitrile (2 mL), and the liquids were submitted to microwave assisted cloud point extraction with Triton X-45. The enrichment factors were between 20 and 50, depending on the vitamin homologue in question. The analytes were determined by LC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, providing unequivocal identification and quantification, with limits of detection of 0.8, 1.0, and 16 ng/g for MK, PK, and MD, respectively. Recovery assays for samples spiked at two concentration levels, between 40 and 600 ng/g depending on the compound, provided recoveries in the 90-114% range. Only PK was detected in the samples analyzed, at concentrations in the 90-2350 ng/g range.

Abstract
This paper describes a mathematical model of fluorescent biological particles composed of bacteria, viruses, or proteins. The fluorescent and/or light absorbing molecules included in the model are amino acids (tryptophan, etc.); nucleic acids (DNA, RNA, etc.); coenzymes (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotides, flavins, and vitamins B₆ and K and variants of these); and dipicolinates. The concentrations, absorptivities, and fluorescence quantum yields are estimated from the literature, often with large uncertainties. The bioparticles in the model are spherical and homogeneous. Calculated fluorescence cross sections for particles excited at 266, 280, and 355 nm are compared with measured values from the literature for several bacteria, bacterial spores and albumins. The calculated 266- and 280-nm excited fluorescence is within a factor of 3.2 of the measurements for the vegetative cells and proteins, but overestimates the fluorescence of spores by a factor of 10 or more. This is the first reported modeling of the fluorescence of bioaerosols in which the primary fluorophores and absorbing molecules are included.

Abstract
We evaluated menaquinone contents in a large set of 62 fermented dairy products samples by using a new liquid chromatography method for accurate quantification of lipo-soluble vitamin K(2), including distribution of individual menaquinones. The method used a simple and rapid purification step to remove matrix components in various fermented dairy products 3 times faster than a reference preparation step. Moreover, the chromatography elution time was significantly shortened and resolution and efficiency were optimized. We observed wide diversity of vitamin K(2) contents in the set of fermented dairy products, from undetectable to 1,100 ng/g of product, and a remarkable diversity of menaquinone forms among products. These observations relate to the main microorganism species currently in the different fermented product technologies. The major form in this large set of fermented dairy products was menaquinone (MK)-9, and contents of MK-9 and MK-8 forms were correlated, that of MK-9 being around 4 times that of MK-8, suggesting that microorganisms able to produce MK-9 also produce MK-8. This was not the case for the other menaquinones, which were produced independently of each other. Finally, no obvious link was established between MK-9 content and fat content or pH of the fermented dairy products.

Abstract
Although members of the genus Shewanella have common features (e.g., the presence of decaheme c-type cytochromes [c-cyts]), they are widely variable in genetic and physiological features. The present study compared the current-generating ability of S. loihica PV-4 in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) with that of well-characterized S. oneidensis MR-1 and examined the roles of c-cyts in extracellular electron transfer. We found that strains PV-4 and MR-1 exhibited notable differences in current-generating mechanisms. While the MR-1 MFCs maintained a constant current density over time, the PV-4 MFCs continued to increase in current density and finally surpassed the MR-1 MFCs. Coulombic efficiencies reached 26% in the PV-4 MFC but 16% in the MR-1 MFCs. Although both organisms produced quinone-like compounds, anode exchange experiments showed that anode-attached cells of PV-4 produced sevenfold more current than planktonic cells in the same chamber, while planktonic cells of MR-1 produced twice the current of the anode-attached cells. Examination of the genome sequence indicated that PV-4 has more c-cyt genes in the metal reductase-containing locus than MR-1. Mutational analysis revealed that PV-4 relied predominantly on a homologue of the decaheme c-cyt MtrC in MR-1 for current generation, even though it also possesses two homologues of the decaheme c-cyt OmcA in MR-1. These results suggest that current generation in a PV-4 MFC is in large part accomplished by anode-attached cells, in which the MtrC homologue constitutes the main path of electrons toward the anode.

Abstract
A method is described to enhance the sensitivity of fluorescence detection of cis-combretastatins using a short post-column photolysis coil with a mercury lamp, by inducing the rapid conversion to the trans isomer. Although all the compounds studied showed enhanced fluorescence after photolysis, there were large differences in the absolute level, with the inherent response of the catechol CA1 being much lower than the corresponding phenolic CA4. Brief exposure to the deuterium lamp in a photodiode array detector also resulted in significant enhancement.
