Synthesis and characterisation of bonded mercaptopropyl silica intermediate stationary phases prepared using multifunctional alkoxysilanes in supercritical carbon dioxide as a reaction solvent

Amphiphilic Janus Particles for Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation in Oil Foams

Amphiphilic Janus silica particles, tunable with oleophobic-oleophilic properties and low fluorine content (8 wt % F), exhibited prominent foamability for a variety of aromatic alcohols at low particle concentrations (<1 wt %) compared to randomly functionalized silica particles. When selectively loaded with Pd nanoparticles on the oleophilic hemisphere, the particles displayed more than a 2-fold increase in catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol compared to nonfoam bulk catalysis under ambient O2 pressure. The particles were conveniently recycled with high foamability and catalytic activity maintained for at least five consecutive runs.

Pickering Interfacial Catalysis for Aerobic Alcohol Oxidation in Oil Foams

Oil foams stabilized by surface-active catalytic particles bearing fluorinated chains and Pd nanoparticles allowed fast and efficient aerobic oxidation of a variety of aromatic and aliphatic alcohols compared to bulk catalytic systems at ambient O₂ pressure. High foam stability was achieved at low particle concentration (<1 wt %) provided that the contact angle locates in the range 41°-73°. The catalytic performance was strongly affected by the foaming properties, with 7-10 times activity increase in pure O₂ compared to nonfoam systems. Intermediate foam stability was required to achieve good catalytic activity, combining large interfacial area and high gas exchange rate. Particles were conveniently recycled with high foamability and catalytic efficiency maintained for at least seven consecutive runs.

Surface Properties of Alkoxysilane Layers Grafted in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Silicon oxide surface properties can be easily modified by grafting alkoxysilane molecules. Here, we studied the structure and the morphology of ultrathin layers prepared by the grafting of alkoxysilanes having different head groups (thiol, amine, and iodo) in supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) on model plane silicon oxide surfaces. Several characterization techniques (X-ray reflectivity, water contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) were used to determine the physicochemical properties of the layers prepared at different temperatures. Moreover, for the first time, AFM peak force measurements were used to delve deeper into the determination of the structure of these ultrathin alkoxysilane layers. The results show that the grafting temperature and the nature of the head group strongly affect the morphology and structure of the grafted layers. Dense monolayers are obtained with 3-(mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane at 60 °C, polycondensed layers are always prepared with [3-(aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane, and a dense bilayer is synthesized with 3-(iodopropyl)triethoxysilane at 120 °C.

¹³C SPE MAS measurement of ligand concentration in compressible chromatographic beads

A method for measuring the ligand concentration in heterogeneous materials like chromatography media is described. In this method, (13)C single pulse excitation magic angle spinning NMR experiment with broadband (1)H decoupling is used to determine the peak integrals for a butyl ligand in the spectrum of a dried chromatography medium. Within a carefully controlled protocol, those integrals compared with that of the internal reference compound dimethyl sulfone provide the required volume concentration with an accuracy of ca 2%. The effects of temperature, degree of hydration, and other experimental parameters are discussed.
