Development of novel molecularly imprinted magnetic solid-phase extraction materials based on magnetic carbon nanotubes and their application for the determination of gatifloxacin in serum samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography

A facile approach for grafting ion imprinted polymer onto magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes for selective removal and preconcentration of cadmium in food and wastewater samples prior to atomic spectrometric determination

A 3D Fe₃O₄@MWCNT-CdIIP was synthesized by the oxidizing surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxylic acid end groups and its subsequent termination with an ion imprinted polymer. An artificial neural network manifests better predictability than the central composite design methodology for optimising the adsorption procedure. The adsorption capacity was 109 mg g^-1 (2.5 times more than non-imprinted polymer) under optimized conditions (pH; 5.6, time; 15 min, concentration; 800 μg mL^-1 temperature; 25 °C), which was in accord with Toth isotherm. Fractal-like pseudo-second-order kinetics was found reasonably fast, with 66 % adsorption in 5 min. Solid phase extraction coupled Flame atomic absorption spectrometry method provides selective recognition towards Cd(II), with limit of detection; 1.13 µg/L, limit of quantification; 3.21 µg/L after preconcentration (preconcentration factor; 50) and good robustness. The developed method was applied for Cd(II) determination in food (tea, coffee, bread, tobacco, radish, spinach), water and wastewater (>99 % removal as well). Cd(II) loaded IIP was further utilized to remove anionic dyes with >95 % removal.

Recent molecularly imprinted polymers applications in bioanalysis

Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) as extraordinary compounds with unique features have presented a wide range of applications and benefits to researchers. In particular when used as a sorbent in sample preparation methods for the analysis of biological samples and complex matrices. Its application in the extraction of medicinal species has attracted much attention and a growing interest. This review focus on articles and research that deals with the application of MIPs in the analysis of components such as biomarkers, drugs, hormones, blockers and inhibitors, especially in biological matrices. The studies based on MIP applications in bioanalysis and the deployment of MIPs in high-throughput settings and optimization of extraction methods are presented. A review of more than 200 articles and research works clearly shows that the superiority of MIP techniques lies in high accuracy, reproducibility, sensitivity, speed and cost effectiveness which make them suitable for clinical usage. Furthermore, this review present MIP-based extraction techniques and MIP-biosensors which are categorized on their classes based on common properties of target components. Extraction methods, studied sample matrices, target analytes, analytical techniques and their results for each study are described. Investigations indicate satisfactory results using MIP-based bioanalysis. According to the increasing number of studies on method development over the last decade, the use of MIPs in bioanalysis is growing and will further expand the scope of MIP applications for less studied samples and analytes.

[Analysis of parabens in environmental water samples by covalent organic framework-based magnetic solid-phase extraction-high performance liquid chromatography]

Parabens are a class of antimicrobial preservatives that are widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food products because of their ease of production, antimicrobial effect, and low price. The widespread use of these parabens, poses potential risks to human health. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a simple and rapid method for the detection of parabens. The large number of substrate interferences in complex samples is an important factor affecting the sensitivity of analytical methods. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has received much attention because of its advantages of easy operation, short extraction time, small sample amount, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high crystallinity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, regular porosity, as well as high chemical and thermal stability are now widely used in separation and analysis. Therefore, a sample pretreatment method combining MSPE and COF for the analysis of parabens in complex matrices is very promising. A magnetic covalent organic framework, Fe₃O₄@TbBd, was successfully synthesized by the Schiff base reaction of 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (Tb) and benzidine (Bd) at room temperature using Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as magnetic cores. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements, etc. revealed that the magnetic COF has high magnetic responsiveness, as well as good thermal and chemical stability, which make it an ideal adsorbent for the MSPE of parabens. Some factors related to the extraction efficiency, including the amount of adsorbent, extraction time, pH, desorption solvent, desorption time, and number of desorption were systematically investigated. A method involving MSPE and high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) based on the Fe₃O₄@TbBd was developed for the determination of four parabens (ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and benzylparaben) in environmental water samples. Under the optimal extraction conditions, the method showed good linearities. The limits of detection and limits of quantification were 0.2-0.4 μg/L and 0.7-1.4 μg/L for the four analytes, respectively. The recoveries at three spiked levels were in the range of 86.1%-110.8% with intra-day and inter-day RSDs of less than 5.5% and 4.9%, respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of parabens in East Lake water, Yangtze water, and domestic wastewater. Ethyl paraben and propyl paraben were detected in domestic wastewater at the levels of 1.8 μg/L and 0.4 μg/L, respectively. The recoveries of the parabens at different spiked levels ranged from 80.7% to 117.5%, with RSDs of 0.2%-8.8%. The method has good potential for the determination of parabens in environmental water samples because of its operational simplicity, short extraction time, high sensitivity, and environmental friendliness.

Facile synthesis of core–shell structured magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2@Au molecularly imprinted polymers for high effective extraction and determination of 4-methylmethcathinone in human urine samples

In this study, a novel material of core–shell structured magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (Fe3O4@SiO2@Au (FSA)-MIPs) was successfully prepared for the rapid and selective determination of 4-methylmethcathinone (mephedrone, 4-MMC). The adsorption capacity of FSA-MIPs is 34.7 mg·g−1 at 308 K, which is significantly higher than magnetic non-imprinted polymers profiting from the imprinting effect. The FSA-MIPs have a short equilibrium (20 min) and could be reused more than six times. Moreover, the selectivity coefficients of FSA-MIPs for 4-MMC, 3,4-dimethylmethcathinone, butylone, 4-ethylmethcathinone, acetylfentanyl, and methylene blue are 4.01, 5.65, 7.62, 12.30, and 20.87 respectively, further indicating the markedly enhanced binding selectivity of FSA-MIPs. As an adsorbent, the FSA-MIPs were successfully applied for effective extraction of 4-MMC in three human urine samples with the recovery rates ranging from 85.5–92.6%. The results confirmed that the FSA-MIPs have good prospects in the extraction and separation of synthetic cathinones, which is suitable for further application in the criminal sciences field.

Use of hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin hybrid monolithic material as adsorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones from environmental water samples

In this study, the hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin hybrid monolithic material was fabricated and firstly applied as adsorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to detect trace-level seven fluoroquinolones in water samples. The prepared hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin hybrid monolithic material was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and adsorption experiments, which showed excellent specific adsorption to the target fluoroquinolones. Under the optimized conditions, the extraction methodology showed satisfactory precision with relative standard deviations between 2.6 and 5.6%, good linearity (R² ≥0.9990) and satisfactory recoveries (82.5∼91.8%). The limits of detection and limits of quantification of the method were in the range of 0.4∼1.2 ng mL^-1 and 1.4∼4.0 ng mL^-1 respectively, which confirmed the possibility of quantifying trace levels. Furthermore, the material could be reused at least five times. These results demonstrated that the hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin hybrid monolithic material was a promising adsorbent for fluoroquinolones, and the established method combined dispersive solid-phase extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography was suitable for the determination of fluoroquinolones in aqueous samples. Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Dispersive (Micro)Solid Phase Extraction: A Review

The review describes the development of batch solid phase extraction procedures based on dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and magnetic MIPs (MMIPs). Advantages and disadvantages of the various MIPs for dispersive solid phase extraction and dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction are discussed. In addition, an effort has also been made to condense the information regarding MMIPs since there are a great variety of supports (magnetite and magnetite composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, or organic metal framework) and magnetite surface functionalization mechanisms for enhancing MIP synthesis, including reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Finally, drawbacks and future prospects for improving molecularly imprinted (micro)solid phase extraction (MIMSPE) are also appraised.

Simultaneous determination of five organophosphorus pesticide residues in different food samples by solid-phase microextraction fibers coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography

BACKGROUND

Excessive or improper use of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) may adversely affect human health through the food chain. In the present study, a simple, rapid and effective analytical method was successfully established and used for the determination of OPPs quinalphos and its analogs in different food samples.

RESULTS

Under the optimized experimental conditions, five OPPs (quinalphos, triazophos, parathion, fenthion and chlorpyrifos-methyl) exhibit a good linearity within a range of 0.02 to 2.0 μg mL^-1 . The detection limit range was 3.0 to 10.0 μg L^-1 (signal-to-noise ratio = 3). The method was successfully used to detect and quantify the residues of quinalphos and its analogs in tomato, cabbage, barley and water samples; all spiked samples gave satisfactory recovery rates for the target analytes of between 82% and 98%, with a relative SD of 3.6% to 7.8%.

CONCLUSION

The results obtained show that the proposed method is an accurate, rapid and reliable sample pre-treatment method with respect to giving a good enrichment factor and detection limit for determining quinalphos pesticide residues in different food samples. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Synthesis and Application of Novel Molecularly Imprinted Solid Phase Extraction Materials Based on Carbon Nanotubes for Determination of Carbofuran in Human Serum by High Performance Liquid Chromatography

Novel molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized using carbofuran as template, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate as cross-liking agent, respectively. Characterization results showed that the carbofuran MIPs have been successfully grafted onto the surface of MWNTs as a thin layer with high stability. The results of adsorption dynamics indicated that the synthesized MWNT-MIPs displayed a biphase adsorption profile and good selective recognition to carbofuran with equilibrium adsorption of 106.2 mg/g. The MWNTs-MIPs synthesized were further applied as the adsorbent material of solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the pretreatment of carbofuran in human serum, analyzed using high performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC). The recoveries obtained ranged from 89.0 ± 4.8 to 93.6 ± 3.2, showing that the MWNTs-MIPs-SPE system developed have specific recognition toward carbofuran. Results above indicated that the proposed system filled with synthesized MWNTs-MIPs provided a fast and selective extraction of carbofuran in serum.

Dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers for dispersive solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water samples coupled with high performance liquid chromatography

Green Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes-Reinforced Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Composites for Drug Delivery of Fenbufen

The facile fabrication of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)-doping molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) nanocomposite-based binary green porogen system, room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs), and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was developed for drug delivery system. With fenbufen (FB) as template molecule, 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) was used as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking monomer, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumtetrafluoroborate and choline chloride/ethylene glycol as binary green solvent, in the presence of SWCNTs. The imprinting effect of the SWCNT-MIP composites was optimized by regulation of the amount of SWCNTs, ratio of RTILs and DES, and the composition of DES. Blue shifts of UV bands strongly suggested that interaction between 4-VP and FB can be enhanced due to SWCNT doping in the process of self-assembly. The reinforced imprinted effect of CNT-doping MIP can provide superior controlled release characteristics. Compared with the control MIP prepared without SWCNTs, the imprinting factor of the SWCNT-MIP composites exhibited a twofold increase. In the analysis for the FB release kinetics from all samples, the SWCNT-reinforced MIP produced the lowest value of drug diffusivity. The relative bioavailability of the SWCNT-MIP composites (F %) displayed the highest value of 143.3% compared with the commercial FB tablet, whereas the control MIP and SWCNT-non-MIP composites was only 48.3% and 44.4%, respectively. The results indicated that the SWCNT-MIP nanocomposites developed here have potentials as the controlled-release device.

Solid-phase extraction of chlorophenols in seawater using a magnetic ionic liquid molecularly imprinted polymer with incorporated silicon dioxide as a sorbent

A type of magnetic ionic liquid based molecularly imprinted polymer coated on SiO₂ (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IL-MIPs) was prepared with 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazole ionic liquid as functional monomer, and 1,4-butane-3,3'-bis-1-ethylimidazole ionic liquid as cross linker, 4-Chlorophenol as template was successfully applied as a selective adsorbent for selective extraction of 5 chlorophenols in seawater samples by using the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method. 11 types of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IL-MIPs were synthesized and investigated for their different compositions of functional monomer (such as [C₂min][Br], [C₂min][BF₄], [C₂min][PF₆], acrylamide, methacrylic acid and 4-vinyl pyridine) and cross-linker (such as [C₄min₂][Br], [C₄min₂][BF₄], [C₄min₂][PF₆], divinylbenzene, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), respectively. The [C₂min][BF₄] and [C₄min₂][PF₆] based Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IL-MIP with the highest extraction efficiencies was applied to the optimization experiment of MSPE process (including extraction time, adsorbent mass and desorption solvents). Good linearity was obtained with correlation coefficients (R²) over 0.9990 and the relative standard deviations for the intra-day and inter-day determination were less than 3.10% with the extraction recoveries ranged from 85.0% to 98.4%. The results indicated that the proposed Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@IL-MIPs possesses great identification and adsorption properties, and could be used as a good sorbent for selective extraction of CPs in environment waters.

Synthesis and characterization of magnetic mesoporous Fe3O4@mSiO2–DODGA nanoparticles for adsorption of 16 rare earth elements

Novel molecularly imprinted polymer based on β-cyclodextrin@graphene oxide: Synthesis and application for selective diphenylamine determination

A sensitive and selective molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the determination of diphenylamine (DPA) was developed based on host-guest interactions of a cyclodextrin-based polymer which possesses an inherent affinity for the target. The proposed GO@MIP has been prepared using the graphene oxide (GO) sheets as surface of polymerization, DPA as target molecule, β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and acrylamide (AM) as functional monomers, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator and N, N methylene bisacrylamide (MBAm) as crosslinker which denoted as GO@MIP nanocomposite. The MIP sites were formed by the inclusion complex through interaction of DPA and β-CD, followed by extraction of target. The resulting GO@MIP nanocomposite possess a fast adsorption kinetics, highly improved imprinting effect, high adsorption capacity, and it can be applied to fast extraction of DPA. The resultant GO@MIP nanocomposite was characterized using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. On the other hand, the non-imprinted polymer (GO@NIP nanocomposite) has been synthesized and was used in the adsorption experiments. The MIP exhibited good affinity with a maximum adsorption capacity of 95.98mgg^-1 and excellent selectivity toward DPA than other structural analogues such as 2-amino benzophenone and dithizone.

Surface-Imprinted Magnetic Carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals for the Highly Selective Extraction of Six Fluoroquinolones from Egg Samples

We herein describe a novel adsorbent based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) on the surface of magnetic carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (Fe₃O₄@CCNs@MIPs) for the separation and purification of six fluoroquinolones (FQs) from egg samples. The obtained Fe₃O₄@CCNs@MIPs not only exhibited a large surface area and specific recognition toward FQs, but also were easily gathered and separated from the egg samples using an external magnetic field. The morphologies and surface groups of the Fe₃O₄@CCNs@MIPs were assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis. The Fe₃O₄@CCNs@MIPs exhibited high selectivity toward six structurally similar FQs. An enrichment approach was established for the measurement of six FQs from egg samples using Fe₃O₄@CCNs@MIPs coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography. The recovery of spiked FQs ranged from 75.2-104.9% and limit of detection was in the range of 3.6-18.4 ng g^-1 for the six FQs. Therefore, the proposed method is a promising technique for the enrichment, separation, and determination of FQs from biomatrices.

Rational design, preparation and adsorption study of a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer using a dummy template and a bifunctional monomer

In this study, a molecular docking method and solvation model in computer simulation were applied to simultaneously screen a dummy template and a bifunctional monomer in the rational design of a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer.

Plastic antibody based surface plasmon resonance nanosensors for selective atrazine detection

This study reports a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based affinity sensor system with the use of molecular imprinted nanoparticles (plastic antibodies) to enhance the pesticide detection. Molecular imprinting based affinity sensor is prepared by the attachment of atrazine (chosen as model pesticide) imprinted nanoparticles onto the gold surface of SPR chip. Recognition element of the affinity sensor is polymerizable form of aspartic acid. The imprinted nanoparticles were characterized via FTIR and zeta-sizer measurements. SPR sensors are characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. The imprinted nanoparticles showed more sensitivity to atrazine than the non-imprinted ones. Different concentrations of atrazine solutions are applied to SPR system to determine the adsorption kinetics. Langmuir adsorption model is found as the most suitable model for this affinity nanosensor system. In order to show the selectivity of the atrazine-imprinted nanoparticles, competitive adsorption of atrazine, simazine and amitrole is investigated. The results showed that the imprinted nanosensor has high selectivity and sensitivity for atrazine.

New techniques of on-line biological sample processing and their application in the field of biopharmaceutical analysis

Biological sample pretreatment is an important step in biological sample analysis. Due to the diversity of biological matrices, the analysis of target substances in these samples presents significant challenges to sample processing. To meet these emerging demands on biopharmaceutical analysis, this paper summarizes several new techniques of on-line biological sample processing: solid phase extraction, solid phase micro-extraction, column switching, limited intake filler, molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction, tubular column, and micro-dialysis. We describe new developments, principles, and characteristics of these techniques, and the application of liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) in biopharmaceutical analysis with these new techniques in on-line biological sample processing.

Determination of type A trichothecenes in coix seed by magnetic solid-phase extraction based on magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

Magnetic solid-phase extraction (m-SPE) is a promising sample preparation approach due to its convenience, speed, and simplicity. For the first time, a rapid and reliable m-SPE approach using magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (m-MWCNTs) as the adsorbent was proposed for purification of type A trichothecenes including T-2 toxins (T2), HT-2 toxins (HT-2), diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), and neosolaniol (NEO) in coix seed. The m-MWCNTs were synthesized by assembling the magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) with MWCNTs by sonication through an aggregation wrap mechanism, and characterized by transmission electron microscope. Several key parameters affecting the performance of the procedure were extensively investigated including extraction solutions, desorption solvents, and m-MWCNT amounts. Under the optimal sample preparation conditions followed by analysis with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), high sensitivity (limit of quantification in the range of 0.3-1.5 μg kg(-1)), good linearity (R (2) > 0.99), satisfactory recovery (73.6-90.6 %), and acceptable precision (≤2.5 %) were obtained. The analytical performance of the developed method has also been successfully evaluated in real coix seed samples. "Sign-on/off" sensing interface design and fabrication for propyl gallate recognition and sensitive detection

A new strategy based on sign-on and sign-off was proposed for propyl gallate (PG) determination by an electrochemical sensor. The successively modified poly(thionine) (PTH) and molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) showed an obvious electrocatalysis and a good recognition toward PG, respectively. Furthermore, the rebound PG molecules in imprinted cavities not only were oxidized but also blocked the electron transmission channels for PTH redox. Thus, a sign-on from PG current and a sign-off from PTH current were combined as a dual-sign for PG detection. Meanwhile, the modified MIP endowed the sensor with recognition capacity. The electrochemical experimental results demonstrated that the prepared sensor possessed good selectivity and high sensitivity. A linear ranging from 5.0×10(-8) to 1.0×10(-4)mol/L for PG detection was obtained with a limit of detection of 2.4×10(-8)mol/L. And the sensor has been applied to analyze PG in real samples with satisfactory results. The simple, low cost, and effective strategy reported here can be further used to prepare electrochemical sensors for other compounds selective recognition and sensitive detection.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for the Enrichment of Ofloxacin Enantiomers in Fish Samples

A new method for the isolation and enrichment of ofloxacin enantiomers from fish samples was developed using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs). These polymers can be easily collected and rapidly separated using an external magnetic field, and also exhibit a high specific recognition for ofloxacin enantiomers. The preparation of amino-functionalized MMIPs was carried out via suspension polymerization and a ring-opening reaction using rac-ofloxacin as a template, ethylenediamine as an active group, glycidyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate as functional monomers, divinylbenzene as a cross-linker, and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as magnetic cores. The characteristics of the MMIPs were assessed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements. Furthermore, the adsorption properties were determined using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The conditions for use of these MMIPs as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbents, including pH, adsorption time, desorption time, and eluent, were investigated in detail. An extraction method using MMIPs coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed for the determination of ofloxacin enantiomers in fish samples. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) for the developed method were 0.059 and 0.067 μg∙mL⁻¹ for levofloxacin and dextrofloxacin, respectively. The recovery of ofloxacin enantiomers ranged from 79.2% ± 5.6% to 84.4% ± 4.6% and ofloxacin enantiomers had good linear relationships within the concentration range of 0.25–5.0 μg∙mL⁻¹ (R² > 0.999). The obtained results demonstrate that MSPE-HPLC is a promising approach for preconcentration, purification, and simultaneous separation of ofloxacin enantiomers in biomatrix samples.
