Abstract
The application of membrane technology for separating chiral compounds is hindered due to the restricted availability of chiral recognition sites on the membrane surface. In this study, we propose a novel approach for chiral separation through a selector (bovine serum albumin, BSA) mediated thermo-sensitive membrane system. A thermo-sensitive hydrogel-coated membrane (termed PDTAN) was developed by anchoring poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) onto a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane through an adhesive and hydrophilic dopamine hydrochloride (PDA)/tannic acid (TA)/chitosan (Chi) intermediate layer. The results demonstrate outstanding chiral separation efficiency, achieving αL/D = 3.30 for D-phenylalanine (D-Phe) rejection at 40 °C on a BSA-mediated PDTAN membrane system, with significant stability and minimal fouling, surpassing previous findings. Moreover, the PDTAN membrane altered the selective properties of recognition sites in BSA, transitioning from rejecting L-Phe to rejecting D-Phe. Analysis using fourth-order derivative UV-vis, circular dichroism (CD), and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques revealed a transition in the secondary structure of BSA from α-helix to β-sheet as the temperature increased. This transition, facilitated by hydrogen bonding between BSA and PNIPAm, enabled selective recognition of D-Phe, demonstrating a distinct shift in chiral recognition properties. Importantly, with D-Phe adsorbed onto β-sheet structures of BSA, hydrogen-bond interactions between BSA and the PDTAN membrane were significantly reduced, thereby minimizing membrane fouling and achieving the durability of membrane-based chiral separation.

Abstract
Enantioseparation by the electromigration-based method is well-established and widely discussed in the literature. Electrophoretic strategies have been used to baseline resolve complex enantiomeric mixtures, typically using a selector substance into the background electrolyte (BGE) from capillaries to microchips. Along with developing new materials/substances for enantioseparations, it is the concern about the green analytical chemistry (GAC) principles for method development and application. This review article brings a last decade's update on the publications involving enantioseparation by electrophoresis for capillary and microchip systems. It also brings a critical discussion on GAC principles and new green metrics in the context of developing an enantioseparation method. Chemical and green features of native and modified cyclodextrins are discussed. Still, given the employment of greener substances, ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents are highlighted, and some new selectors are proposed. For all the mentioned selectors, green features about their production, application, and disposal are considered. Sample preparation and BGE composition in GAC perspective, as well as greener derivatization possibilities, were also addressed. Therefore, one of the goals of this review is to aid the electrophoretic researchers to look where they have not.

Abstract
Numerous studies have been reported to improve the selectivity of uric acid (UA) by eliminating the interference from other electroactive species that coexist in biological fluids. However, two main challenges associated with the nonenzymatic electrochemical detection of UA need to be overcome to achieve practical applications in biological samples. Those are the chemical fouling of electrodes caused by the oxidation product of UA and biofouling due to the non-specific absorption of biological macromolecules. It was found that the residual oxo-functional groups and defects on graphene played a crucial part in both electrocatalysis and anti-biofouling. Here, graphene oxide (GO) was tuned by electro-oxidation and electro-reduction and was investigated in antifouling and electrocatalytic performances for the electrochemical sensing of UA by using pristine GO, BSA bound GO, electro-reduction-treated GO and electro-oxidation-treated GO. The electro-oxidation-treated GO was explored in electrochemical sensing for the first time and exhibited the highest sensitivity and low fouling properties. Holey GO might be formed on the electrode surface by the electrochemical oxidation method in a mild and green solution without the use of an acid. The different electrode interfaces as well as the interaction with BSA were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemistry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Abstract
The reported optical resolution method was designed to support high-throughput enantioseparation of molecular building blocks obtained by automated small-scale synthetic methods. Lipophilic esters of common resolving agents were prepared and used as liquid membranes on the indifferent polymer surface of a microtiter assay. Chiral model compounds were enriched in one of the enantiomers starting from the aqueous solutions of their racemic mixture. Enantiodiscrimination was provided by forming diastereomeric coordination complexes of lipophilic enantiopure esters with the enantiomers of the chiral building blocks inside the liquid membranes. This enantiomeric recognition resulted in a greater distribution ratio of the preferred isomer in the membrane phase, thus the process enables a simultaneous enantioenrichment of the solutions outside the membrane. This paper reports a novel microplate-integrated stereoselective membrane enrichment technique satisfying the need for automatable enantioseparation on a subpreparative scale.

Abstract
Owing to the satisfactory properties such as high specific surface area, finely tunable chemical composition, large yet adjustable pore sizes, and diverse architecture, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have the potential to be used as a stable, efficient, reusable and protective biomacromolecule immobilization carrier in capillary electrophoresis. Herein, a novel immobilized receptor open-tubular affinity capillary electrochromatography (OT-ACEC) strategy was developed for the first time to rapidly investigate the interactions between a set of drugs and bovine serum albumin (BSA). To further increase the amount of immobilized BSA and maintain the bioactivity of BSA, BSA was immobilized on the inner capillary surface by using polydopamine (PDA) as the adhesion layer and surface functionalization agent, a MOF namely dresden university of technology-5 (DUT-5) as supporting platform and biomacromolecule immobilization carrier, respectively. The amount of immobilized BSA on the capillary surface of the BSA@capillary and the PDA/MOFs/BSA@capillary column are separately calculated as 0.00756 nmol and 0.01812 nmol. Besides, the PDA/MOFs/BSA@capillary column was applied to investigate the interactions between BSA and flavonoids, fluoroquinolones. Under the optimal interaction conditions, three flavonoids and three fluoroquinolones are able to achieve baseline separation in the PDA/MOFs/BSA@capillary column (with resolution values of three flavonoids, 5.78 and 4.13; three fluoroquinolones, 1.72 and 1.68). The PDA/MOFs/BSA@capillary column shows good stability and reproducibility over 100 runs (relative standard deviation (RSD)<5%). In addition, the normalized capacity factor (KRCE) in this method replaced the binding constant and was used as an evaluation index to fast predict the activities of 20 drugs, some of which have not yet been reported for their interactions with BSA. Spectroscopy and molecular docking further illuminated the binding mechanism.

Abstract
Herein, a novel L-arginine (L-Arg)-modified polydopamine (PDA)-coated capillary (PDA/L-Arg@capillary) was firstly fabricated via the basic amino-acid-induced PDA co-deposition strategy and employed to constitute a new chiral ligand exchange capillary electrochromatography (CLE-CEC) method for the high-performance enantioseparation of D,L-amino acids (D,L-AAs) with L-Arg as the immobilized chiral ligand coordinating with the central metal ion Zn(II) as running buffer. Assisted by hydrothermal treatment, the robust immobilization of L-Arg on the capillary inner wall could be facilely achieved within 1 h, prominently improving the synthesis efficiency and simplifying the preparation procedure. The successful preparation of PDA/L-Arg coatings in the capillary was systematically characterized and confirmed using several methods. In comparison with bare and PDA-functionalized capillaries, the enantioseparation capability of the presented CLE-CEC system was significantly enhanced. Eight D,L-AAs were completely separated and three pairs were partially separated under the optimal conditions. The prepared PDA/L-Arg@capillary showed good repeatability and stability. The potential mechanism of the greatly enhanced enantioseparation performance obtained by PDA/L-Arg@capillary was also explored. Moreover, the proposed method was further utilized for studying the enzyme kinetics of L-glutamic dehydrogenase, exhibiting its promising prospects in enzyme assays and other related applications.

Abstract
Curdlan hydrogel obtained after thermal gelling exhibits elasticity and high water-absorbing capacity. However, its modifications leading to the increase of biofunctionality usually alter its solubility and reduce mechanical parameters. Therefore, curdlan hydrogel was modified by deposition of polydopamine to improve its capacity to bind biologically active molecules with free amino groups. It exhibited the unchanged structure, mechanical properties and increased soaking capacity. Aminoglycoside antibiotic (gentamicin) as a model molecule was effectively immobilized to such modified curdlan via quinone moiety (but not amino groups) of polydopamine. Approximately 50 % of the immobilized drug was released following Fickian diffusion and inhibited the bacterial growth in matrix-surrounding medium in prolonged manner. The remaining drug amount was stably attached and prevented the hydrogel against bacterial adhesion even when all the mobile drug has been released. Therefore, polydopamine-modified curdlan hydrogel shows the potential for fabrication of functional materials for different purposes, including drug-loaded biomaterials.

Abstract
In this work, a class of novel and eco-friendly open-tubular (OT) chiral column was presented for the first time by one step preparation with zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) and bovine serum album (BSA) based on electrostatic adsorption and adsorption affinity. This stationary phase materials combined the features of large surface areas and adsorption affinity of ZIF-8, and also the multiple chiral binding sites of BSA, which contributes to the π-interaction and hydrophobic interaction with the analytes. The separation performance of BSA@ZIF-8-OT chiral columns was evaluated with a miniaturized capillary electrochromatography and amperometric detection (mini-CEC-AD) system; in particular, nine groups of model molecules, including homologues, structural isomers, and chiral compounds, were baseline separated under the certain optimum conditions. The RSDs of run-to-run, day-to-day, column-to-column, and batch-to-batch reproducibility were less than 13.8 %. Furthermore, the prepared OT columns were successfully applied to fast analysis of ephedrine isomers in Chinese herb ephedra, and the LODs achieved 1.5-2.0 ng mL-1 (S/N=3) by an electrophoretic stacking technique of moving chemical reaction boundary. This mini-CEC-AD system with BSA@ZIF-8-OT chiral columns provides a promising potential in pharmaceutical analysis due to its fast, sensitive, enantioselective, and low-cost characteristics.

Abstract
RATIONALE Dopamine (Dp) is one of the neurotransmitters released by the brain, and it was recently observed to undergo "self-polymerization" to form polydopamine (polyDp) functional materials, with a poorly understood polymerization mechanism. In this study, we investigated the chemical structure of polyDp as well as the mechanism of its formation using a combination of mass spectrometric techniques for both liquid and solid-state samples. METHODS Using the classical combustion analyses in combination with liquid chromatography coupled with spectrophotometric and mass spectrometric (MS) techniques and a 'bottom up' approach, we identified the major monomer units and a spectrum of oligomeric aggregates in the reaction mixtures of self-assembling Dp. Furthermore, the effect of the reaction medium on the structure and composition of polyDp materials was also investigated using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis. RESULTS A study of the MS and MS/MS spectra revealed for the first time that polyDp is partially composed of non-covalent supramolecular aggregates with unmodified Dp (3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine) and oxidized Dp (dopaminechrome) as the main building blocks. This finding was further validated via a heavy isotope labelling method and a 'top-down' approach in which we detected Dp and dopaminechrome monomers in the synthesized polyDp material. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first direct evidence demonstrating the formation mechanism and chemical structure of polyDp. CONCLUSIONS It is anticipated that the knowledge generated from this study will provide insight into the structure-property relationship of polyDp and assist in developing polyDp-based material with better performance.

Abstract
The issue of quantifying trace metals in cells has drawn widespread attention but is threatened with insufficient sensitivity of the instruments, complex cellular matrix and limited cell consumption. In this study, microfluidic droplet-based liquid phase microextraction (LPME), as a miniaturized platform, was developed and combined with electrothermal vaporization (ETV)-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) for the analysis of trace Cd, Hg, Pb, and Bi in cells. A novel and facile design of phase separation region was proposed, which made the phase separation very easily for subsequent ETV-ICPMS detection. Mechanism of the phase separation was carefully discussed using the incompressible formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The developed microfluidic droplet-based LPME system exhibited much higher extraction efficiency to target metals than microfluidic stratified flow-based LPME. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection of the proposed microfluidic droplet-based LPME-ETV-ICPMS system were 2.5, 3.9, 5.5, and 3.4 ng L-1 for Cd, Hg, Pb, and Bi, respectively. The accuracy of the developed method was well validated by analyzing the target metals in Certified Reference Materials of GBW07601a human hair. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of target metals in HeLa and HepG2 cells with the recoveries for the spiked samples ranging from 83.5 to 112.3%. Overall, the proposed design is a simple and reliable solution for the phase separation on droplet-chip and the microfluidic droplet-based LPME-ETV-ICPMS combination strategy shows great promise for trace elements analysis in cells.

Abstract
Open tubular CEC (OT-CEC) separates analyte mixtures by a combination of electrophoretic, electro-osmotic, and/or chromatographic effects. OT-CEC research is an active and growing field, with studies encompassing a wide range of investigations related to new strategies for chemical modification of the inner surface of the capillary, leading to the introduction of novel stationary phase coatings. This review has examined the literature on OT-CEC from 2013 to August 2015 and highlights the developments in the fabrication of highly selective stationary phases, based on materials that include cyclodextrin chiral selectors, graphene and graphene oxide, metal-organic frameworks, molecularly imprinted polymers, nanoparticles, nanolatex particles, nanocomposites, in situ generated polymers, block polymers, tentacle-type polymers, polyelectrolyte multilayers, polysaccharides, phospholipids, and proteins. This review, while considering the development of novel OT-CEC coating materials, specifically examines different immobilization or coating methodologies and approaches and also discusses the separation mechanisms that occur with these new materials. These OT-CEC coatings are intended mainly to separate low molecular weight molecules relevant to the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and food industries as well as for use in environmental monitoring.

Abstract
This review highlights recent advances and applications in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) for enantioseparations during the last decade. Although extensive research has been conducted in the area of separations by use of CEC, and a big number of reviews have been published, there is not a review on exclusively the use of chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in OT-CEC for enantioseparations. Therefore, in this review, the design and synthesis of different CSPs are presented, and their potential applications in OT-CEC for enantioseparations are discussed. The different approaches to CSP development include chiral nanomaterials, porous layers, molecular imprinting, sol-gel technique, polyelectrolyte multilayer coating, polymeric coating and others.

Abstract
In this paper, using the self-polymerization of norepinephrine (NE) and its favorable film-forming property, a simple and green preparation approach was developed to modify a PDMS channel for enantioseparation of chiral compounds. After the PDMS microchip was filled with NE solution, poly(norepinephrine) (PNE) film was gradually formed and deposited on the inner wall of microchannel as permanent coating via the oxidation of NE by the oxygen dissolved in the solution. Due to possessing plentiful catechol and amine functional groups, the PNE-coated PDMS microchip exhibited much better wettability, more stable and suppressed EOF, and less nonspecific adsorption. The water contact angle and EOF of PNE-coated PDMS substrate were measured to be 13° and 1.68 × 10(-4) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) , compared to those of 108° and 2.24 × 10(-4) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) from the untreated one, respectively. Different kinds of chiral compounds, such as amino acid enantiomer, drug enantiomer, and peptide enantiomer were efficiently separated utilizing a separation length of 37 mm coupled with in-column amperometric detection on the PNE-coated PDMS microchips. This facile mussel-inspired PNE-based microchip system exhibited strong recognition ability, high-performance, admirable reproducibility, and stability, which may have potential use in the complex biological analysis.

Polydopamine-supported immobilization of covalent-organic framework-5 in capillary as stationary phase for electrochromatographic separation. J Chromatogr A 2016; 1445:140-8. Abstract
Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are attractive materials for their fascinating properties, such as rigid structures, exceptional thermal stabilities, low densities, and permanent porosity with specific surface areas, which indicate potential for application in chromatography similar to related metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the utilization of COFs in analytical chemistry is far behind as compared to that of the MOFs due to the challenging work of their immobilization. Here, we have successfully demonstrated the growth of the boron COF-5 on the inner wall of the fused silica capillary by a developed polydopamine-supported method. Combined with the layer-by-layer strategy, multilayer COF-5-coated capillary was obtained. The formation of COF-5 on polydopamine-coated substrate has been confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction. A novel stationary phase of COF-5 was developed on the basis of successful growth of COF-5 on polydopamine for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). Baseline separation of neutral, acidic and basic analytes was achieved on multilayer COF-5-coated capillary column. The fabricated capillary columns showed high column efficiency (154,060 plates/m for methylbenzene), excellent stability and repeatability. The precision (relative standard deviation (RSD), n=3) of retention time, peak height, and peak area for tested neutral compounds were in the range of 1.2-1.3%, 1.8-4.2%, and 0.9-2.4%, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it was the first demonstration that COF-5 was developed as a novel stationary phase.

Abstract
CE is known for being one of the most powerful analytical techniques when performing enantioseparations due to its numerous advantages such as excellent separation efficiency and extremely low solvents and reagents consumption, all of them derived from the capillary small dimensions. Moreover, it is worth highlighting that unlike in chromatographic techniques, in CE the chiral selector is generally within the separation medium instead of being attached to the separation column which makes the method optimization a more versatile task. Despite its numerous advantages, when using UV-Vis detection, CE lacks of sensitivity detection due to its short optical path length derived from the narrow separation capillary. This issue can be overcome by means of different approaches, either by sample treatment procedures or by in-capillary preconcentration techniques or even by employing detection systems more sensitive than UV-Vis, such as LIF or MS. The present review assembles the latest contributions regarding improvements of sensitivity in chiral CE published from June 2013 until May 2015, which follows the works included in a previous review reported by Sánchez-Hernández et al. [Electrophoresis 2014, 35, 12-27].

Abstract
Much attention has been paid to utilizing polydopamine (PDA) as the stationary phase in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) owing to its diverse properties, such as strong adhesion to various surfaces, latent reactivity toward amine and thiol groups and metal ion chelating/redox activities. In this study, a novel open-tubular capillary column coated with polydopamine/gold nanoparticles/thiols (PDA/Au NPs/thiols) has been fabricated based on the multiple properties of PDA for the first time. The capillary inner surface was firstly functionalized with a layer of PDA/Au NPs using the strong adhesive and metal ion redox properties of PDA. Thiols were then introduced and covalently reacted with the hybrid coating based on the Michael addition reaction of PDA and thiols and also Au-S bonds. Moreover, benefitting from the porosity of PDA, layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly was further applied to increase the amounts of stationary phase (Au NPs and thiols), which can significantly enhance the separation effectiveness and stability of the coated column. The formation of the PDA/Au NP/thiol coating in the capillary was confirmed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy). Then the separation effectiveness of the PDA/Au NP/thiol@capillary was verified by the separation of alkylbenzenes, which can achieve baseline separation easily with high column efficiency. In addition, the column showed long lifetime and good stability. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for intra-day and inter-day repeatability of the PDA/Au NP/thiol@capillary were lower than 5%. Therefore, the layer-by-layer self-assembly of PDA/Au NPs/thiols on the capillary inner-surface could be an effective capillary modification strategy.

Abstract
Microchip electrophoresis (MCE) was one of the earliest applications of the micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS) concept, whose aim is to reduce analysis time and reagent and sample consumption while increasing throughput and portability by miniaturizing analytical laboratory procedures onto a microfluidic chip. More than two decades on, electrophoresis remains the most common separation technique used in microfluidic applications. MCE-based instruments have had some commercial success and have found application in many disciplines. This review will consider the present state of MCE including recent advances in technology and both novel and routine applications in the laboratory. We will also attempt to assess the impact of MCE in the scientific community and its prospects for the future.

Simultaneous determination of phenylethanoid glycosides and aglycones by capillary zone electrophoresis with running buffer modifier. Anal Biochem 2013; 449:158-63. Abstract
Although the separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis (CE) is much higher than that of other chromatographic methods, it is sometimes difficult to adequately separate the complex ingredients in biological samples. This article describes how one effective and simple way to develop the separation efficiency in CE is to add some modifiers to the running buffer. The suitable running buffer modifier β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was explored to fast and completely separate four phenylethanoid glycosides and aglycones (homovanillyl alcohol, hydroxytyrosol, 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid, and caffeic acid) in Lamiophlomis rotata (Lr) and Cistanche by capillary zone electrophoresis with ultraviolet (UV) detection. It was found that when β-CD was used as running buffer modifier, a baseline separation of the four analytes could be accomplished in less than 20 min and the detection limits were as low as 10(-3) mg L(-1). Other factors affecting the CE separation, such as working potential, pH value and ionic strength of running buffer, separation voltage, and sample injection time, were investigated extensively. Under the optimal conditions, a successful practical application on the determination of Lr and Cistanche samples confirmed the validity and practicability of this method.
