Abstract
Australian honey samples from four botanical genera (Lophostemon, Eucalyptus, Macadamia and Corymbia) were investigated for their phenolic content. An improved phenolic extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) analysis method allowed for the rapid and reliable identification of phenolic compounds. A concentrated liquid-liquid extraction method with an acidified aqueous solution and acetonitrile was optimised to isolate phenolic compounds from the honey matrix. The concentrated extraction method improved sensitivity and permitted the identification of phenolics present at low concentrations (LOD: 0.012-0.25 mg/kg and LOQ: 0.040-2.99 mg/kg). The optimised HPLC-DAD chromatographic conditions gave stable retention times, improved peak separation and allowed for the inexpensive detection of each of the 109 phenolic compounds at their maximum absorbance wavelength. Out of the 109 phenolic compounds included in this study, 49 were identified in the Australian honeys tested. Furthermore, 25 of the 49 compounds were determined to be markers specific to honey floral origin.

Abstract
Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) offer a promising, sustainable alternative for extracting polyphenols from food plants, known for their health benefits. Traditional extraction methods are often costly and involve toxic solvents. This review discusses the basic concepts, preparation techniques, and factors influencing the effective and safe use of DESs in polyphenol extraction. DESs' adaptability allows integration with other green extraction technologies, such as microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extractions, enhancing their efficiency. This adaptability demonstrates the potential of DESs in the sustainable extraction of bioactive compounds. Current research indicates that DESs could play a significant role in the sustainable procurement of these compounds, marking an important advancement in food science research and development. The review underscores DESs as a realistic, eco-friendly alternative in the realm of natural extraction technologies, offering a significant contribution to sustainable practices in food science.

Abstract
3D printing technology has attracted great attention in various fields of science and technology. Application of this technology in manufacturing analytical tools is developing fast. High precision in manufacturing designed objects, fast production and low cost also green production approach by using biodegradable materials like polylactic acid is promising bright future in scientific researches. The development of new approaches in improving the functional groups of the surface of 3D printed objects in order to make 3D printed parts more functional with conventional 3D printed materials, causes the entry of many advanced materials in this field. In this study, a novel solid phase microextraction fiber was prepared based on Co-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets in-situ growth on 3D-printed aluminum-polylactic acid (PLA) composite and its application for determination of phenolic acids (PAs) including vanillic acid (VA), ferulic acid (FA), p-coumaric acid (p-CA), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), protocatechuic acid (PCA) and caffeic acid (CA) in fruit juice samples was investigated. The proposed fiber was prepared via a robust one-step hydrothermal synthesis of Co-Al LDH on an anodized 3D-printed Al-PLA fiber. Factors crucial for the extraction, including pH, extraction and desorption time and ionic strength were explored in detail. Under the optimal experimental conditions, for all PAs except PCA, LOD, LOQ and LDR were obtained as 0.03, 0.1 and 0.1-100.0 µgL-1, respectively. For PCA, LOD, LOQ and LDR were obtained as 0.15, 0.50 and 0.5-100.0 µgL-1, respectively.

Abstract
Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) via gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) is a potent tool to elucidate the fate of (semi-)volatile organic contaminants in technical and environmental systems. Yet, due to the comparatively low sensitivity of IRMS, an enrichment step prior to analysis often is inevitable. A promising approach for fast as well as economic analyte extraction and preconcentration prior to CSIA is dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) - a well-established technique in concentration analysis of contaminants from aqueous samples. Here, we present and evaluate the first DLLME method for GC-IRMS exemplified by the analysis of chlorinated phenols (4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol) as model compounds. The analytes were simultaneously acetylated with acetic anhydride and extracted from the aqueous phase using a binary solvent mixture of acetone and tetrachloroethylene. With this method, reproducible δ13C values were achieved with errors ≤ 0.6‰ (n = 3) for aqueous concentrations down to 100 μg L-1. With preconcentration factors between 130 and 220, the method outperformed conventional liquid-liquid extraction in terms of sample preparation time and resource consumption with comparable reproducibility. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the suitability of the method (i) for the extraction of the analytes from a spiked river water sample and (ii) to quantify kinetic carbon isotope effect for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol during reduction with zero-valent zinc in a laboratory batch experiment. The presented work shows for the first time the potential of DLLME for analyte enrichment prior to CSIA and paves the way for further developments, such as the extraction of other compounds or scaling up to larger sample volumes.

Abstract
To accurately determine flavonoids (rutin, quercetin or kaempferol), it is necessary to extract them from complex matrices. The ultrasound-assisted magnetic dispersion microsolid phase extraction technique has been predominantly used for separation and enrichment of the target analytes. The combination of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles and a deep eutectic supramolecular solvent (DESP) is likely to enhance the efficiency of flavonoid extraction from food. In this study, adsorbents were prepared by modifying chitosan with magnetic nanoparticles, and the eluent was a DESP derived from β-cyclodextrin and an organic acid. The successful preparation of these materials was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM and 1H NMR. The extraction recovery rates exceeded 93 %, with limits of detection and quantitation ranging from 0.9 to 2.4 μg/L and 2.7 to 7.2 μg/L, respectively, and the flavonoid clearance rates for ABTS and DPPH radicals reached 100 %. Therefore, the integration of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles with the DESP provides a new and efficient method for the extraction of flavonoids while also presenting a potential application of the DESP in separations.

Abstract
To better understand the biochemistry of the organoleptic properties of honey influencing its commercial value, a predictive model for correlating amino acid profiles to aromatic compounds was built. Because the amino acid composition of different varieties of honey plays a key role as a precursor of specific aroma bouquets, it is necessary to relate the amino acid typesetting to aromatic molecules. A selection of unifloral honeys produced in Calabria, South Italy, were used, and a new methodology based on the use of HILIC-UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS and HS-SPME-GC-MS combined with multivariate processing has been developed. This study, carried out for the first time on honey, shows its excellent potential as a modern analytical tool for a rapid multicomponent analysis of food-quality indicators. Data obtained showed strong positive linear correlations between aldehydes and isoleucine, valine, leucine, and phenylalanine. Furans are correlated with isoleucine, leucine, and phenylalanine; hydrocarbons with serine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid; and ketones with serine, alanine, glutamine, histidine, asparagine, and lysine. Alcohols were more associated with tyrosine than esters with arginine. Proline, tryptophan, and threonine showed poor correlations with all the classes of aroma compounds.

Abstract
This research presents a novel, eco-friendly, vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VALLME) approach, integrating hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) with HPLC for the identification and quantification of nine specific flavonoids in Shanxi aged vinegar (SAV). The parameters of DES-VALLME, including the ratio of trioctylmethylammonium chloride to 1,4-butanediol (1:6), DES volume (150 μL), vortex duration (5 min), the concentration of NaCl (0.40 g), and centrifugation time (10 min), were optimized to achieve the maximum extraction efficiency of target substances. Under these optimal conditions, quantitative analyses performed via HPLC demonstrated a broad linear range of 0.20-50.00 μg/mL and correlation coefficients (r2) greater than 0.9944 for all nine calibration curves. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.09-0.18 μg/mL and 0.30-0.60 μg/mL, respectively, ensuring high sensitivity. The relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day variability were within the acceptable range, 2.34-3.77% and 3.04-4.96%, respectively, demonstrating the method's reliability. The recovery rates ranged from 85.97% to 108.11%, underscoring the method's precision. This technique exhibited a significant enrichment effect (enrichment factor: 43 to 296) on SAV flavonoids. Notably, the eco-friendliness of this procedure was evaluated using the Analytical Eco-Scale, Green Analytical Procedure Index, and Analytical Greenness Metric. The results suggested that this technique is a viable green alternative to traditional flavonoid determination methods in SAV. In summary, this novel method provides a theoretical basis for assessing flavonoid content in SAV samples and tracing SAV products. This contribution has significant implications for enhancing analytical techniques in food chemistry and environmental science and the sustainable development of the food industry.

Abstract
Honey has recently been rediscovered as an antibacterial and wound-healing natural product. The medicinal properties of honey originate from the floral source used by bees. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Sudanese crude acacia bee honey and its solvent extracts regarding its biological activity and chemical characterization. To verify the nature of the antibacterial agent(s) of honey, sample (A) Sudanese crude unprocessed acacia bee honey obtained from west of Sudan (Nyala) during October 2019 was tested in vitro for antibacterial activity against 10 standard microorganisms Enterobacter aerogenes: ATCC: 13048, Enterococcus faecalis: ATCC: 29212, Escherichia coli: ATCC: 25922, Klebsiella pneumoniae: ATCC: 700603, Pseudomonas aeruginosa: ATCC: 27853, Serratia marcescens: ATCC: 8100, Staphylococcus aureus: ATCC: 29213, Staphylococcus epidermidis: ATCC: 12228, Staphylococcus Methicillin Sensitive MSSA: ATCC: 29213, and Staphylococcus Methicillin-Resistant MRSA: ATCC: 23591. Extraction of honey sample was carried out by petroleum ether followed by ethyl acetate using liquid/liquid extraction technique, using separating funnels. All organic extracts in addition to their aqueous residue were tested in vitro for antibacterial activity against the10 standard microorganisms. Ethyl acetate extract was subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) for chemical characterization. Sudanese crude unprocessed acacia honey showed inhibitory effects against the 10 standard microorganisms. Petroleum ether extract showed no antibacterial activity against the tested organisms, while its water residue exhibited remarkable activity. The ethyl acetate extract exhibited strong antibacterial activity against the tested organisms, while its aqueous residue showed no activity. Ethyl acetate extract subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) showed twenty-one chemical constituents. The GC-MS showed twenty-one chemical compounds, and phenolic compound was the highest concentration. Ethyl acetate extract exhibited strong antibacterial activity which can be formulated as topical dressing for wounds and burns. The usage of honey in a professional context should be taken into consideration while treating burns and wounds.

Abstract
Honey is a highly consumed natural product produced by bees which is susceptible to fraudulent practices, some of them regarding its botanical origin. Two HPLC-UV non-targeted fingerprinting approaches were evaluated in this work to address honey characterization, classification, and authentication based on honey botanical variety. The first method used no sample treatment and a universal reversed-phase chromatographic separation. On the contrary, the second method was based on an off-line SPE preconcentration method, optimized for the isolation and extraction of polyphenolic compounds, and a reversed-phase chromatographic separation optimized for polyphenols as well. For the off-line SPE method, the use of HLB (3 mL, 60 mg) cartridges, and 6 mL of methanol as eluent, allowed to achieve acceptable recoveries for the selected polyphenols. The obtained HPLC-UV fingerprints were subjected to an exploratory principal component analysis (PCA) and a classificatory partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to evaluate their viability as sample chemical descriptors for authentication purposes. Both HPLC-UV fingerprints resulted to be appropriate to discriminate between blossom honeys and honeydew honeys. However, a superior performance was accomplished with off-line SPE HPLC-UV polyphenolic fingerprints, being able to differentiate among the different blossom honey samples under the study (orange/lemon blossom, rosemary, thyme, eucalyptus, and heather). In general, this work demonstrated the feasibility of HPLC-UV fingerprints, especially those obtained after off-line SPE polyphenolic isolation and extraction, to be employed as honey chemical descriptors to address the characterization and classification of honey samples according to their botanical origin.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of the large variety of phenolic compounds that have to date been identified in a wide range of monofloral honeys found globally. The collated information is structured along several themes, including the botanical family and genus of the monofloral honeys for which phenolic constituents have been reported, the chemical classes the phenolic compounds can be attributed to, and the analytical method employed in compound determination as well as countries with a particular research focus on phenolic honey constituents. This review covers 130 research papers that detail the phenolic constituents of a total of 556 monofloral honeys. Based on the findings of this review, it can be concluded that most of these honeys belong to the Myrtaceae and Fabaceae families and that Robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia, Fabaceae), Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium, Myrtaceae), and Chestnut (Castanea sp., Fagaceae) honeys are to date the most studied honeys for phenolic compound determination. China, Italy, and Turkey are the major honey phenolic research hubs. To date, 161 individual phenolic compounds belonging to five major compound groups have been reported, with caffeic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid and quercetin being the most widely reported among them. HPLC with photodiode array detection appears to be the most popular method for chemical structure identification.

Abstract
An environmentally friendly magnetic solid phase extraction method was developed based on magnetic chitosan-graphene oxide nanoparticles and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for the pre-concentration and isolation of flavonoids (apigenin, morin, naringenin, and quercetin) of natural orange juice, commercial apple juice, onion juice, green tea, and natural apple juice samples. DESs via hydrophilic and π-π interactions could increase the extraction performance. The immobilization of chitosan-graphene oxide on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles improved their chemical properties and mechanical stability. In addition, the prepared magnetic nanoparticles with the hydrophilic polymeric network and the high surface area of the graphene oxide increased the access of binding sites and extraction performance. The use of DESs as desorption of solvent and the individual properties of MANPs provided the ability for high extraction recovery and accelerates the time to reach equilibrium. The principal variables that influence microextraction efficiency, including the extraction time, type of DES, stirring rate, desorption time, type of eluent solvent, and pH of the sample solution, were screened via the Plackett-Burman design and then the variables were optimized by the Box-Behnken design. Under the optimum conditions obtained, the developed method showed a good working range (R2 ≥ 0.9962). The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.03 μg L-1 (morin) to 0.14 μg L-1 (naringenin) and from 0.09 μg L-1 (morin) to 0.46 μg L-1 (naringenin) variables, respectively. The intraday precision was in the range of 4.1-4.8. In order to experiment with the precision and applicability of the MSPE-DES method, spiking recovery studies were performed in beverages and vegetable samples (natural orange juice, onion juice, commercial apple juice, natural apple juice, and green tea). The recovery results for real samples were calculated as 90-102%.

Abstract
The aim of this study is determine the in vitro and in vivo antiradical properties and the cytoprotective activity of Allium nutans L. honey extract. The antiradical properties of the extracts were investigated in rabbit alveolar macrophages and human foreskin fibroblast (hFFs) cells in the presence of doxorubicin, a cytotoxic substance using DPPH and ABTS assays. The cytoprotective activities were determined using 18 Wistar rats divided into three different groups, a negative control, and two other groups with experimentally induced hepatotoxicity by a single intraperitoneal injection of 50% carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) oil solution. A positive control group, received drinking water only and an experimental group that was treated with Allium nutans L. honey extracts for 7 days. In vitro treatment with Allium nutans L. honey extracts resulted in 78% reduction in radical activity in DPPH and 91.6% inhibition using the ABTS. Also, honey extracts were able to preserve 100% of cell viability in the presence of the cytotoxic, doxorubicin. Furthermore, the treatment with honey extracts resulted in a significant reduction in damage to the structure of liver tissue, as well significant reduction in the levels of ALT and AST in the experimental group compared to the control group.

Abstract
There are a significant number of analytical methodologies employing different techniques to determine phenolic compounds in beverages. However, these methods employ long sample preparation processes and great time consumption. The aim of this paper was the development of a simple method for evaluating the phenolic compounds’ presence in Brazilian craft beers without a previous extraction step. Catechin, caffeic acid, epicatechin, p-coumaric acid, hydrated rutin, trans-ferulic acid, quercetin, kaempferol, and formononetin were analyzed in fifteen different craft beers. The method showed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9966). The limit of detection ranged from 0.08 to 0.83 mg L−1, and limits of quantification were between 0.27 and 2.78 mg L−1. The method showed a satisfactory precision (RSD ≤ 16.2%). A good accuracy was obtained by the proposed method for all phenolic compounds in craft beer (68.6% ˂ accuracy ˂ 112%). Catechin showed higher concentrations (up to 124.8 mg L−1) in the samples, followed by epicatechin (up to 51.1 mg L−1) and caffeic acid (up to 8.13 mg L−1). Rutin and formononetin were observed in all analyzed samples (0.52 mg L−1 to 2.40 mg L−1), and kaempferol was less present in the samples. The presence of plant origin products was determinant for the occurrence of the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds in Brazilian craft beers.

Abstract
Background: vegetative diversity is based on different climate and geographical origins. In terms of beekeeping, herbal diversity is strongly correlated to the production of a wide variety of honey. Therefore, based on the existing plant diversity in each country, multiple honey varieties are produced with different health characteristics. While beekeeping potential and consumption preferences are reflected in products’ variety, this leads to an increase in the region’s economy and extensive export. In the last years, monofloral honey has gained interest from consumers and especially in the medicinal field due to the presence of phytochemicals which are directly linked to health benefits, wound healing, antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Scope and approach: this review aims to highlight the physicochemical properties, mineral profiles and antioxidant activities of selected monofloral honeys based on their botanical and geographical origin. Moreover, this review focuses on the intercorrelation between monofloral honey’s antioxidant compounds and in vitro and in vivo activities, focusing on the apoptosis and cell proliferation inhibition in various cell lines, with a final usage of honey as a potential therapeutic product in the fight towards reducing tumor growth. Key findings and conclusions: multiple studies have demonstrated that monofloral honeys have different physicochemical structures and bioactive compounds. Useful chemical markers to distinguish between monofloral honeys were evidenced, such as: 2-methoxybenzoic acid and trimethoxybenzoic acid are distinctive to Manuka honey while 4-methoxyphenylacetic acid is characteristic to Kanuka honey. Furthermore, resveratrol, epigallocatechin and pinostrobin are markers distinct to Sage honey, whereas carvacrol and thymol are found in Ziziphus honey. Due to their polyphenolic profile, monofloral honeys have significant antioxidant activity, as well as antidiabetic, antimicrobial and anticancer activities. It was demonstrated that Pine honey decreased the MDA and TBARS levels in liver, kidney, heart and brain tissues, whereas Malicia honey reduced the low-density lipoprotein level. Consumption of Clover, Acacia and Gelam honeys reduced the weight and adiposity, as well as trygliceride levels. Furthermore, the antiproliferative effect of chrysin, a natural flavone in Acacia honey, was demonstrated in human (A375) and murine (B16-F1) melanoma cell lines, whereas caffeic acid, a phenolic compound found in Kelulut honey, proves to be significant candidate in the chemoprevention of colon cancer. Based on these features, the use of hiney in the medicinal field (apitherapy), and the widespread usage of natural product consumption, is gaining interest by each year.

Abstract
An efficient matrix cleanup method was developed for the rapid screening of 92 illegal adulterants (25 erectile dysfunction drugs, 15 steroids, seven anabolic steroids, 12 antihistamines, 12 nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), four diuretics, and 17 weight-loss drugs) in soft-gel-type supplements by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole/time of flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS). As representative green chemistry methods, three sample preparation methods (dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), “quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe” dispersive solid-phase extraction (QuEChERS-dSPE), and enhanced matrix removal-lipid (EMR-Lipid) dSPE) were evaluated for matrix removal efficiency, recovery rate, and matrix effect. In this study, EMR-Lipid dSPE was shown to effectively remove complicated matrix contents in soft-gels, compared to DLLME and QuEChERS-dSPE. For the rapid screening of a wide range of adulterants, extracted common ion chromatogram (ECIC) and neutral loss scan (NLS) based on specific common MS/MS fragments were applied to randomly collected soft-gel-type dietary supplement samples using UHPLC-Q/TOF-MS. Both ECICs and NLSs enabled rapid and simple screening of multi-class adulterants and could be an alternative to the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) method. The developed method was validated in terms of limit of detection (LOD), precision, accuracy, recovery, and matrix effects. The range of LODs was 0.1–16 ng/g. The overall precision values were within 0.09–14.65%. The accuracy ranged from 81.6% to 116.6%. The recoveries and matrix effects of 92 illegal adulterants ranged within 16.9–119.4% and 69.8–114.8%, respectively. The established method was successfully applied to screen and identify 92 illegal adulterants in soft-gels. This method can be a promising tool for the high-throughput screening of various adulterants in dietary supplements and could be used as a more environmentally friendly routine analytical method for screening dietary supplements illegally adulterated with multi-class drug substances.

Abstract
Honey consumption is attributed to potentially advantageous effects on human health due to its antioxidant capacity as well as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, which are mainly related to phenolic compound content. Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites of plants, and their content in honey is primarily affected by the botanical and geographical origin. In this study, a high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) method was applied to determine the phenolic profile of various honey matrices and investigate authenticity markers. A fruitful sample set was collected, including honey from 10 different botanical sources (n = 51) originating from Greece and Poland. Generic liquid-liquid extraction using ethyl acetate as the extractant was used to apply targeted and non-targeted workflows simultaneously. The method was fully validated according to the Eurachem guidelines, and it demonstrated high accuracy, precision, and sensitivity resulting in the detection of 11 target analytes in the samples. Suspect screening identified 16 bioactive compounds in at least one sample, with abscisic acid isomers being the most abundant in arbutus honey. Importantly, 10 markers related to honey geographical origin were revealed through non-targeted screening and the application of advanced chemometric tools. In conclusion, authenticity markers and discrimination patterns were emerged using targeted and non-targeted workflows, indicating the impact of this study on food authenticity and metabolomic fields.

Abstract
Honey has exerted a high impact in the field of alternative medicine over many centuries. In addition to its wound healing, anti-microbial and antioxidant properties, several lines of evidence have highlighted the efficiency of honey and associated bioactive constituents as anti-tumor agents against a range of cancer types. Mechanistically, honey was shown to inhibit cancer cell growth through its pro-apoptotic, anti-proliferative and anti-metastatic effects. However, the potential of honey to regulate anti-tumor immune responses is relatively unexplored. A small number of in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the ability of honey to modulate the immune system by inducing immunostimulatory as well as anti-inflammatory effects. In the present review, we summarize the findings from different studies that aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of honey and its flavonoid components in relation to cancer. While these studies provide promising data, additional research is needed to further elucidate the immunomodulatory properties of honey, and to enable its utilization as an adjuvant therapy in cancer.

Abstract
The recent emergence of COVID-19 represents one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. Despite the recent attempts to understand the epidemiological pattern and pathogenesis of the disease, detailed data about the physiology and pathology of the disease is still out of reach. Moreover, the lack of a widespread vaccine prompts an urgent call for developing a proper intervention strategy against the virus. Importantly, identification of novel molecules that target replication of the virus represents one of the promising strategies for the control this pandemic crisis. Among others, honey bee products contain numerous bioactive compounds such as propolis and several phenolic compounds that possess a wide range of therapeutic properties for combating various pathological disorders and infectious agents. The intention of the present review is to highlight the stages of SARS-CoV-2 lifecycle, the molecular mechanisms explaining the health benefits of honey bee products on COVID-19 physiology and pathology and the possible limitations. Further future research is suggested to explore more about bee natural bioactive compounds as potential candidates against SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
In the present study, an environmentally friendly magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction was developed based on magnetic agarose nanoparticles and deep eutectic solvents for the isolation and pre-concentration of three flavonoids (morin, quercetin, and kaempferol) from dark tea, chocolate, vegetable, and fruit juice samples. In this method, deep eutectic solvents were synthesized from less toxic and low-cost substances under feasible conditions and used as eluents in the desorption process. These solvents can be considered as a green alternative to traditional organic reagents to increase the adsorption capacity and reduce the matrix interferences, dangerous waste generation and environmental pollution. A Plackett-Burman design was employed for screening the experimental variables. The effective variables were then optimized by Box-Behnken design (BBD). Under the optimial conditions, the presented method demonstrated wide linear ranges of 1-500 μg. L-1 for morin and quercetin, and 5-500 μg. L-1 for kaempferol with satisfactory recoveries above 91%. Limit of detections (LODs) and quantifications (LOQs) of flavonoids varied in 0.2-1.1 μg. L-1 and 0.66-3.63 μg. L-1, respectively. The precision of the proposed method was the range of 2.6-5.7%.

Abstract
High-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC–PAD) combined with chemometric analysis was developed to describe, for the first time, the sugar profile of sixty-one honeys of different botanical origin produced in southern Italy (Calabria Region). The principal component and linear discriminant analysis used to describe the variability of sugar data were able to discriminate the honeys according to their botanical origin with a correlation index higher than 90%. For the purpose of the robustness of the conclusions of this study, the analytical advantages of the HPAEC–PAD method have been statistically demonstrated compared to the official Italian HPLC–RI method (Refractive Index detection). Finally, as the characterization of the floral and geographical origin of honey became an important issue due to high consumer demand, 13 acacia honeys originating from Europe and China were studied by using the same method. By chemometric method it was possible to discriminate the different geographical origin with an index of 100%. All results proved the possibility to identify the sugar profile obtained by HPAEC–PAD combined with a robust statistical analysis, as a tool of authentication.

Abstract
Honey is a natural food widely consumed due to its high content in nutrients and bioactive substances. In order to prevent hive infections, xenobiotics such as pesticides and antibiotics are commonly used. Chloramphenicol (CAP) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat honeybee larvae diseases. However, CAP has toxic and nondose-dependent effects in sensitive subjects; for this reason, its use has been prohibited in food-producing animals, such as the honeybee. In this study, we proposed a rapid, simple, and cheap analytical method, based on salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction coupled with UHPLC MS/MS detection for the accurate determination of CAP in honey to be used in routine analyses. The parameters that influence the extraction efficiency have been optimized using an experimental design in order to maximize the recovery of the analyte by reducing the matrix effects. Therefore, the developed method was internally validated according to the 2002/657/EC Decision guidelines and applied to the analysis of 96 honey samples.

Abstract
Calcium fluoride (CaF2) quantum dots have many applications in various fields. But there is no report on fluorescent characteristics of CaF2 quantum dots (CaF2 QDs). Here, a synthesis of multiple-color emission CaF2 QDs by changing the temperature, time and raw ratio is reported, by which the CaF2 QDs with purple, blue, green, and yellow emission can be obtained, respectively. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). On this basis, a novel molecular imprinting ratiometric fluorescence sensor (MIR sensor) had been constructed based on the prepared CaF2 QDs and CdTe QDs, in which the yellow emission CaF2 QDs was used as a responsive signal material and the red emission CdTe QDs was served as a reference signal material. And the β-CD and methylacrylic acid (MAA) as bifunctional monomers were used for constructing the specific molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in MIR sensor. This MIR sensor was applied for highly selective and excellent sensitive detection of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Under optimum conditions, it exhibited an excellent linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity ratio (I599/I625) and the concentration of HMF in the range of 0.1-6.0 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.043 μg/mL. Finally, the established HMF-MIR sensor was successfully utilized to detect HMF in honey with satisfactory results. This work provided a reference for the application of the CaF2 QDs and the detection of the furfural substances.

Abstract
Honey is a sweet, viscous syrup produced by the honey bee (Apis mellifera). It is probably the first natural sweetener ever discovered, and is currently used as a nutritious food supplement and medicinal agent. The aim of the present mini-review is to summarize and update the current knowledge regarding the role of honey in CVDs based on various experimental models. It also describes the role of its phenolic compounds in treating CVDs. Many such phenolic and flavonoid compounds, including quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin, and caffeic acid, have antioxidant and anti-platelet potential, and hence may ameliorate cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) through various mechanisms, such as by decreasing oxidative stress and inhibiting blood platelet activation. However, as the phenolic content of a particular type of honey is not always known, it can be difficult to determine whether any observed effects on the human cardiovascular system may be associated with the consumption of honey or its constituents. Therefore, further experiments in this area are needed.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical, the microbiological, and the antioxidant characteristics of unifloral honey, polyfloral honey, honeydew, and hay meadows honey. Hay meadow is type of semi-natural grassland with a great floral diversity, an important resource for pollinators. Grasslands are the source of the spring nectar honey obtained in May and June. Water content, sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, trehalose, melezitose, maltose, erlose, turanose, and raffinose), electrical conductivity, phenolic content (gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, 4-hydrxybenzoic acid, vanilic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid, myricetin, quercitin, luteolin, kaempferol), color, viscosity, and microbiological characteristics were performed for all samples of honey. The total polyphenols content was significant for grassland honey (21.50 mg/100 g) and honeydew (30.49 mg/100 g) and less significant for acacia (0.08 mg/100 g) and rape honey (0.14 mg/100 g). All samples were microbiologically safe, and standard plate count (SPC) values were <10 cfu/g for all the samples, but the grassland honey had the highest microbiological quality: 33.3% of samples without microorganisms, 50.0% with the presence of yeast under limit, and 16.7% with yeast and mold under limit, a situation that does not meet other types of honey. The results of statistical analysis obtained with principal component analysis (PCA) showed a major difference between the grassland honey and the other types of honey.

Abstract
The contamination of honey with hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) is an actual concern for food safety. This study reports the first application of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) in the determination of five relevant PAs, and the relative N-oxide derivatives (PANOs), in honey. The effects of different experimental parameters (pH, ionic strength, type and volume of DLLME solvents) affecting the extraction efficiency were carefully investigated and optimized. PAs were extracted from honey (diluted solution 10% w/v at pH 9.5) by injecting a mixture of chloroform and isopropyl alcohol. A reduction step (zinc powder in acidic aqueous solution) before DLLME was performed to convert PANOs in PAs and to obtain the total PA levels. Both sample preparation protocols (DLLME and Zn-DLLME) showed negligible matrix effects on PA signal intensity in honeys of different botanical origins. The overall recoveries of DLLME and Zn-DLLME ranged from 71 to 102% and from 63 to 103%, respectively, with a good precision (standard deviations in the range from 1 to 12%). The attained method quantification limits stayed between 0.03 and 0.06 μg kg-1, and the linear response range extended to 25 μg kg-1. Additionally, the proposed method provides results comparable to those of the SPE protocol in the analysis of real samples. An analysis of retail honeys revealed PA residues in all analyzed samples, with a maximum level of 17.5 μg kg-1 (total PAs). Globally, the proposed method provides a sensitive and accurate determination of analytes and offers numerous advantages, such as simplicity, low cost, and a high sample throughput, which make it suitable for screening and quality control programs in food chain and occurrence studies.

Abstract
Background:
Honey is generally evaluated by physicochemical analysis of its constituents.
The manipulation of honey and its possible adulteration is reflected in many of its physicochemical
properties.
Objective:
In this study, samples of Zygophyllum album L honey produced in El-Oued, Algeria, were
characterized based on their melissopalynology, physicochemical and antioxidant properties, also polyphenol
content.
Methods:
The physicochemical parameters of honey, such as density, moisture content, pH, free acidity,
electrical conductivity (EC), total sugar content, color intensity, water insoluble solids content, hydroxymethylfurfural
(HMF), ash, specific rotation, were measured. A number of antioxidant tests
were performed to determine the antioxidant properties of Zygophyllum album L honey samples. The
polyphenol in the Zygophyllum album L honey was measured by spectrometric determination based
on folin-ciocalteu’s method. The identification and quantification of phenolic compounds were carried
out by RP-HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography).
Results:
All honey samples contained monofloral (67.83-91.89%) pollen belonging to Zygophyllum
album L. The results of physicochemical parameters of analyzed honeys were: pH 4.33, moisture
17.2%, free acidity 41.96 meq/kg, electrical conductivity 0.408 mS/cm, HMF 11.89 mg/kg, Ash 0.246
(%), specific rotation -8.21. The Zygophyllum album L honey was extra white amber. The total sugar
content ranged from 81.5 to 83. Honey samples contain high levels of gallic acid (252.53±15.56
mg/kg honey), chlorogenic acid (124.71±10.09 mg/kg) and low amounts of total polyphenol
(467.82±46,98 mg GAE/kg).
Conclusion:
Physicochemical parameters (total acidity, pH, moisture, dry matter, ash, and qualitative
hydroxymethylfurfural) were within the approved limits established by International Honey Commission.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Honey has been considered to have therapeutic properties since ancient times and among the factors responsible for such activity are phenolic compounds including phenolic acids and flavonoids from different natural sources. OBJECTIVE This study investigated the phenolic compounds profile and bioactive properties of different honey types from Romanian flora in order to develop reliable tools for honey floral origin, thus contributing to the honey traceability in the European Union context. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-three honey samples were examined, including unifloral (acacia and rape), polyfloral, honeydew honeys and mixture honeys. Phenolic acids and flavonoids were isolated from the water soluble honey matrix using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) method and analysed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography diode array detector electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-ESI/MS). Honey bioactive properties were measured in honey dissolved in 80% ethanol using UV-visible spectrophotometric methods. Multivariate statistical tools (principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis) were used for honey classification. RESULTS The results of this study confirm that honey samples had similar, but quantitatively different, phenolic acids and flavonoids profiles and bioactive properties, related with honey floral source. Coloured honeys, such as honeydew honey, show high phenolic composition and bioactive properties and implicitly a high therapeutic potential compared with the other floral honeys. CONCLUSION Distinctive clusters obtained by principal component analysis enabled us to consider that honeydew and polyfloral honeys could be distinguished from acacia and rape honey with the analytical methods developed. Based on this study, the methods might be promising tools for honey traceability, which needs to be explored on a larger set of samples with different regional floral origins in future studies.

Abstract
Honeydew honey has differentiated chemical and physicochemical characteristics besides potential functional properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. In this sense, the interest and consumption of this honey as a functional product by the food industry and consumers have increased. Honeydew honeys usually present dark color, a lower content of monosaccharides and higher values of pH, acidity, electric conductivity, proteins, minerals, phenolic compounds, and oligosaccharides compared to blossom honeys, which contribute to its outstanding biological activities. Consequently, contaminations and adulterations of this honey can occur and compromise the quality, safety and authenticity of honeydew honey. Thus, detailed knowledge of the composition and properties of honeydew honeys is of great importance, especially considering that honeydew honeys are still few studied and therefore underestimated. Therefore, in this review, the physicochemical characteristics, chemical and bioactive composition, functional and health-promoting properties of honeydew honey as well as contamination, adulteration and authenticity of this honey are summarized.

Abstract
Honey is a natural substance appreciated for its therapeutic abilities since ancient times. Its content in flavonoids and phenolic acids plays a key role on human health, thanks to the high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that they exert. Honey possesses antimicrobial capacity and anticancer activity against different types of tumors, acting on different molecular pathways that are involved on cellular proliferation. In addition, an antidiabetic activity has also been highlighted, with the reduction of glucose, fructosamine, and glycosylated hemoglobin serum concentration. Honey exerts also a protective effect in the cardiovascular system, where it mainly prevents the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, in the nervous system, in the respiratory system against asthma and bacterial infections, and in the gastrointestinal system. A beneficial effect of honey can also be demonstrated in athletes. The purpose of this review is to summarize and update the current information regarding the role of honey in health and diseases.
