Abstract
Resonance Enhanced MultiPhoton Ionization spectroscopic techniques coupled with laser desorption and supersonic cooling have been employed to elucidate the photoactive properties of resveratrol. The observed excitation spectra give evidence for an internal-energy dependent trans-cis isomerisation pathway in the electronically excited state, while pump-probe studies show dynamics that are in line with what is known for the parent compound, trans-stilbene. Similar studies have been performed on a derivative of resveratrol with methoxy instead of hydroxy groups, a compound aimed to reduce previously observed photodegradation pathways of resveratrol. Time-resolved studies of the latter compound under solution conditions have given further insight into its excited-state dynamics and support the isolated-molecule conclusions on the topology of the potential energy surface of the electronically excited state. Spectroscopic studies under prolonged irradiation conditions show that both compounds suffer from photodegradation, although in the alkylated compound other pathways appear to be involved than in resveratrol.

Abstract
Wine and grape juice are known to have hydroxylated stilbenes, a group of phytoalexins, health-promoting compounds. The determination of stilbene species in wine and grape juices remains a challenging task. Here, we propose an efficient strategy for the simultaneous determination of eleven hydroxylated stilbenes in grape wines and grape juice by a SALLE in conjunction with an HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. SALLE and HPLC-MS/MS conditions were optimized. The proposed method was validated and found to be a simple, sensitive, and reliable measure for the determination of the stilbene species in wine and grape juice. The SALLE was fast and efficient, taking only 10 min. The HPLC-MS/MS was able to quickly separate and quantitate the eleven stilbenes (9 min running). This method was successfully applied to determine the contents of stilbene species in commercial wine and grape juice in Korea. This method is advantageous in reduced sample preparation time, low labor, and cost efficiency.

Abstract
The treatment of oral mucosal infections is increasingly challenging owing to antibiotic resistance. Therefore, alternative antimicrobial strategies are urgently required. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has attracted attention for the treatment of oral mucosal infections because of its ability to effectively inactivate drug-resistant bacteria, completely heal clinical infectious lesions and usually offers only mild adverse reactions. This review briefly summarizes relevant scientific data and published papers and discusses the potential mechanism and application of PDT in the treatment of oral mucosal infections.

Abstract
trans-Resveratrol, a phytochemical compound with antioxidant power and various therapeutic effects, such as cardioprotective, chemopreventive, and neuroprotective, among others, has disadvantages of poor solubility and limited stability, creating difficulties for the development of new strategies for its quantification. This study developed and validated an analytical stability method for trans-resveratrol by high-pressure liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-PDA), which allowed its quantification in the presence of its degradation products. The quantification of trans-resveratrol occurred at a retention time of 2.6 min, with ammonium formate (10 mM, pH = 4)/acetonitrile, 70/30 v/v, as mobile phase. The validation met the ICH Q2 criteria of specificity, method linearity (2.8-4.2 μg/ml), precision and accuracy, robustness, quantification limit (0.176 μg/ml), and detection (0.058 μg/ml). As degradation products, cis-resveratrol was observed at 3.9 min, which could be resveratrone in 3.2 min and five unidentified products in 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, 1.8, and 5 min. Some solutions subjected to temperature stress of 40 and 60°C, UV light, and acidic and basic hydrolysis exhibited colour changes. An analytical method was obtained by HPLC-PDA, which allowed quantifying the stability of trans-resveratrol in a fast and specific manner in the presence of its degradation products.

Abstract
Grape stem is rich in phenolic compounds, especially stilbenes. These antioxidants can be degraded during the storage of grape stem extracts for long periods of time. The aim of this work was to analyze the stability of Mazuelo stem extracts during storage at 25 and 40 °C, in two different light conditions (amber and transparent vials). The stability of the antioxidants was studied after 2, 4 and 6 months of conservation. Gallic acid and the quercetin derivative concentration were stable throughout the storage period. In contrast, catechin disappeared from all the extracts in just two months of storage. Anthocyanins were significantly affected by temperature, and light enhanced their degradation when the extracts were kept at 40 °C. Resveratrol and viniferin showed a similar behavior. Their concentration decreased from the beginning of storage, and in both cases, they were significantly affected by both temperature and light.

Abstract
Bovine β-casein is an amphiphilic protein that exists as a monomer and self-organizes into micelles in aqueous solution. The protein has been used as natural vehicles for bioactives. Trans-resveratrol has received significant attention due to its vast health benefits and conversion to cis-isomer during processing and storage. However, cis-isomer has not yet gained as much attention as that of trans-isomer. In this study, the interaction of β-casein with trans- and cis-resveratrol was characterized. Trans-resveratrol exhibited a higher affinity for β-casein than cis-isomer, and β-casein could bind two isomers simultaneously to form protein-diligand complexes. Both trans- and cis-isomers could be encapsulated into β-casein micelles with encapsulation efficiencies of ~69% and ~57%, respectively. The β-casein micelles could delay photo-isomerization of trans-isomer to cis-isomer, while β-casein-ligand complex showed a better protective effect for both isomers during storage than β-casein micelles. These results might be useful for the development of protein-based carriers for the polyphenols.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main causative agent of infections acquired in both community and hospital environment. In this context, photodynamic therapy (PDT) consists in using a photosensitizer that, activated by light, evokes the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which lead to the death of microorganisms due to oxidative damage; it is useful tool since this action, harmful to pathogens, does not significantly injure human cells. In view of this, this work proposes a more in-depth study on the use of resveratrol (RSV) as a possible photosensitizer. It was observed, in the intradermal infection model in animals' ear dermis, that photoactivated resveratrol promotes an increase in myeloperoxidase expression with reduced bacterial load in the draining lymph node. Besides that, the draining lymph node of the animals treated with photoactivated RSV controls inflammation through IL-10 production. These are pioneers data and this work being a pilot study; then, other works must be conducted with the objective of elucidate the photoactivated resveratrol mechanism of action.

Abstract
The photochemical dimerisation of resveratrol analogues in the solid state to generate chiral phenyl substituted cyclobutanes is described. NMR spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic methods have confirmed that the dimerisation leads to the head to tail orientation of the phenyl group substituents in the cyclobutane derivative. Interestingly, the parent compound, resveratrol, in the solid state, did not form a cyclobutane dimer, but the O-acetyl analogues gave the corresponding cyclobutane dimers in high yield, suggesting that the close packing of molecules together with the electron density through the conjugated double bond of the resveratrol structure are important determinants for photodimerisation to occur in the solid state.

Abstract
This paper reports the degradation of 10 mg L-1 Ametryn solution with different advanced oxidation processes and by ultraviolet (UV254) irradiation alone with the main objective of reducing acute toxicity and increase biodegradability. The investigated factors included Fe2+ and H2O2 concentrations. The effectiveness of the UV254 and UV254/H2O2 processes were investigated using a low-pressure mercury UV lamp (254 nm). Photo-Fenton process was explored using a blacklight blue lamp (BLB, λ = 365 nm). The UV254 irradiation process achieved complete degradation of Ametryn solution after 60 min. The degradation time of Ametryn was greatly improved by the addition of H2O2. It is worth pointing out that a high rate of Ametryn removal was attained even at low concentrations of H2O2. The kinetic constant of the reaction between Ametryn and HO● for UV254/H2O2 was 3.53 × 108 L mol-1 s-1. The complete Ametryn degradation by the Fenton and photo-Fenton processes was observed following 10 min of reaction for various combinations of Fe2+ and H2O2 under investigation. Working with the highest concentration (150 mg L-1 H2O2 and 10 mg L-1 Fe2+), around 30 and 70% of TOC removal were reached within 120 min of treatment by Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, respectively. Although it did not obtain complete mineralization, the intermediates formed in the degradation processes were hydroxylated and did not promote acute toxicity of Vibrio fischeri. Furthermore, a substantial improvement of biodegradability was obtained for all studied processes.

Abstract
Dietary polyphenols, a natural component in many kinds of foods such as fruits and vegetables, play essential roles in a wide range of plant functions. Importantly, the discovery of the functions of polyphenols including anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory has been appealing to researchers' attentions. Dietary polyphenols have shown protective effects on chronic degenerative diseases (CDD) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and neurodegenerative diseases by regulating gene expression. Dietary polyphenols also affect the composition and activity of gut microbiota, in reverse, gut microbiota influences the bioavailability and physiological activity of dietary polyphenols. However, not all kinds of dietary polyphenols are beneficial for human health. The potential deleterious effects of several dietary polyphenols have been reported by inducing DNA damage and gene mutants. This review summarizes the potential therapeutic effects of dietary polyphenols on chronic degeneration diseases, the polyphenols-gut microbiota interactions, and the potential dangers of individual dietary polyphenols on human health.

Abstract
Stilbenoids, particularly resveratrol and its oligomer, are abundantly present in grapes, and their antioxidant activities have been widely reported. A quick and simple method based on UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS2 was established for the fragmentation pathways analysis of trans-ε-Viniferin, cis-ε-Viniferin, trans-δ-Viniferin and (-)-Hopeaphenol. MS/MS experiments on the [M-H]- ions provided abundant structural information, especially regarding the relative abundance of the key product ion at m/z 347. The product ion was used to further identify structures in isomers of resveratrol dimers and its analogues. Based on the fragmentation pathways, we tentatively determined two compounds from the crude extracts of Xinjiang winegrape stems as Gnetin C and cis-Scirpusin A. Results from these experiments contribute to a more complete understanding of the stilbene compounds found in grape stems. The UHPLC-QTOF-MS2 method can be used for the rapid analysis of stilbenes compounds in plant materials, foods and wine.

Abstract
Resveratrol, as one of the stilbenoids, is present in abundance in wine grapes and has been shown to selectively quench 1O2. DNA is oxidized by 1O2 causing irreparable functional damage, and of the nucleic acids, guanine is the most susceptible. An agarose gel electrophoresis assay demonstrated that DNA was damaged by 1O2 with less than 5 min of UVA irradiation, and also that 5 mM resveratrol dissolved in MeOH could relieve the observed oxidation stress. Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was performed to reveal the mechanism. Four guanine oxidation products at m/z 140.0334 [M-H]-(1), DGh, 8-oxoG, Sp and two conjugates at m/z 377.1104 [M-H]- and 391.0907 [M-H]- were identified and quantified. Thus, we propose the mechanism that the phenol ring of resveratrol links with the free amino groups (NH) of guanine at the beginning of 1O2 attack to form m/z 377.1104 [M-H]-, however, as 1O2 is able to attack the amino groups continuously, resveratrol can efficiently react with 1O2 prior to damage, and form m/z 391.0907 [M-H]- thereby protecting guanine.

Abstract
Similarities and differences among the phototransformation routes of four azolic fungicides (diniconazole, DIN, imazalil, IMA; penconazole, PEN; and propiconazole, PRO) in surface water aliquots are investigated. Selected compounds share a common chemical structure consisting on dichlorophenyl and azolic rings connected through an ethylene bridge, which is substituted with different functionalities. Liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS) was employed as analytical technique to follow the time-course of precursor fungicides and to detect and to identify their photo-transformation products (TPs). Under solar light, the substituents linked to the ethylene chain controlled the stability of the fungicides. Whilst PEN and PRO remained stable, DIN and IMA showed moderate reactivities, with half-lives (t1/2) of 5.1 and 33.5h, respectively. When exposed to UV (254nm) radiation, all compounds were effectively degraded with t1/2 in the range from seconds to a few minutes. Dechlorination followed by intramolecular cyclization, between phenyl and azolic rings, was identified as a common phototransformation route under UV irradiation. Depending on the length and the kind of the functionalities attached to the ethylene bridge, additional cyclization reactions are also possible. In-silico toxicity predictions pointed out to dechlorinated tricyclic TPs as the most concerning ones, with predicted lethal concentrations (LC50) in the same range as the precursor fungicides.

Expression of genes and proteins of multidrug resistance in gastric cancer cells treated with resveratrol. Oncol Lett 2018; 15:5825-5832. Abstract
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a notable problem in the use of chemotherapy. Therefore, studies aimed at identifying substances capable of overcoming resistance of cancer cells are required. Examples of these compounds are polyphenols, including resveratrol, that exert a range of various biological activities. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the effect of 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene (resveratrol) on the expression of ATP binding cassette subfamily B member 1, Annexin A1 (ANXA1) and thioredoxin (TXN) genes, and the proteins encoded by these genes, which are associated with MDR. The experiments were performed in human gastric cancer cell lines EPG85-257RDB (RDB) and EPG85-257RNOV (RNOV), which are resistant to daunorubicin and mitoxantrone, respectively, in addition to EPG85-257P (control), which is sensitive to cytostatic drugs. Cells were treated with 30 or 50 µM resveratrol for 72 h and changes in the expression levels of the genes were analysed with the use of a reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The cellular levels of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), ANXA1 and TXN were evaluated using immunofluorescence and western blot analysis. Resveratrol in both concentrations has been shown to have a statistically significant influence on expression of the mentioned genes, compared with untreated cells. In RDB cells, resveratrol reduced the expression level of all analyzed genes, compared with untreated cells. Similar results at the protein level were obtained for P-gp and TXN. In turn, in the RNOV cell line, resveratrol reduced TXN expression at mRNA and protein levels, compared with untreated cells. The results of the present study indicate that resveratrol may reduce the resistance of cancer cells by affecting the expression of a number of the genes and proteins associated with MDR.
