The synthesis of Zr-metal-organic framework functionalized magnetic graphene nanocomposites as an adsorbent for fast determination of multi-pesticide residues in tobacco samples

Hollow multi-shelled MOF derivative adsorbent for efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction of several typical endocrine disrupting compounds from water

Bisphenols and benzophenones are two typical kinds of endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) that have been extensively detected in water environments, posing unanticipated risks to aquatic organisms and humans. It is urgent to develop efficient sample pretreatment methods for precise measurement of such EDCs. In this study, a magnetic and multi-shelled metal-organic framework derivative material has been prepared to extract and enrich trace bisphenols and benzophenones from water. Via a solvothermal reaction induced by sodium citrate followed by a carbonization treatment, a ZIF-67@ZIF-8 derived CoZn-magnetic hierarchical carbon (CoZn-MHC) material has been synthesized as a high-performance magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent. This adsorbent exhibited a good specific surface area (213.80 m2⋅g-1) and a saturation magnetization of 63.2 emu·g-1. After the optimization of several parameters (including adsorbent dosage, extraction time, pH, ionic strength, desorption solvent, and solvent volume), an efficient MSPE method for several EDCs (comprising bisphenols and benzophenones) was developed with a good linear range (R2 ≥ 0.990), a high sensitivity range (LODs: 0.793-5.37 ng⋅L-1), and good reusability (RSD ≤4.67 % in five consecutive tests). Furthermore, the material exhibited commendable resistance to matrix interference in natural water samples with the recovery rates of target compounds ranging from 74.8 % to 107 %. We envision that the preparation strategy of this functional metal-organic framework (MOF)-based adsorbent for EDCs may provide insights for relevant research in the future.

Cyclodextrin-based metal-organic framework nanoparticles as superior carriers for curcumin: Study of encapsulation mechanism, solubility, release kinetics, and antioxidative stability

In this paper, we propose a facile program of preparing nanoscale γ-cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks (Nano-CD-MOFs) for the encapsulation of curcumin. Such Nano-CD-MOFs not only possess excellent mono-dispersity and crystalline structure, but also perform superior loading capacity. The results of N₂ adsorption-desorption, XRD, DSC, and microtopography are utilized to confirm the presence status of encapsulated curcumin and further reveal the encapsulation mechanism of Nano-CD-MOFs. Curcumin-loaded Nano-CD-MOFs (Cur-Nano-CD-MOFs) dramatically increase curcumin solubility and a top-down uniform dispersion in the dissolution process. The perfect fitting of First-order and Korsmeyer-Peppas models suggests that the release performance of Nano-CD-MOFs is controlled by the loaded quantity of curcumin and related to Fickian diffusion. Moreover, the antioxidative stability of Cur-Nano-CD-MOFs is considerably enhanced even after 120 min of persistent ultraviolet irradiation. Therefore, we suggest that such Nano-CD-MOFs can be promoted as an advanced carrier for the delivery of curcumin or other nutraceuticals.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Agriculture

Agrochemicals, which are crucial to meet the world food qualitative and quantitative demand, are compounds used to kill pests (insects, fungi, rodents, or unwanted plants). Regrettably, there are some important issues associated with their widespread and extensive use (e.g., contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistance); thus, a reduced and more controlled use of agrochemicals and thorough detection in food, water, soil, and fields are necessary. In this regard, the development of new functional materials for the efficient application, detection, and removal of agrochemicals is a priority. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with exceptional sorptive, recognition capabilities, and catalytical properties have very recently shown their potential in agriculture. This Review emphasizes the recent advances in the use of MOFs in agriculture through three main views: environmental remediation, controlled agrochemical release, and detection of agrochemicals.

Simultaneous analysis of multiple pesticide residues in tobacco by magnetic carbon composite-based QuEChERS method and liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Magnetic carbon composite (Fe3O4@C) was synthesized and applied as a reversed-dispersive solid-phase extraction sorbent for the simultaneous analysis of 40 pesticide residues in tobacco by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-fight mass spectrometry. Compared to the traditional QuEChERS method, the optimized Fe3O4@C simplified clean-up process and exhibited better clean-up capability than conventional sorbents. The pesticides were qualitatively identified by accurate mass of protonated molecules, fragment ions, isotopic peak clusters, and retention time, and quantitatively determined by matrix-matched external standard method. Good linearity of the proposed method was obtained with R value greater than 0.997 for all target pesticides at concentration levels of 2-200 µg/L. The limit of detection ranged from 0.14 to 2.67 µg/kg. The recoveries and relative standard deviations of all target pesticides at three spiked concentrations of 20, 50 and 200 µg/kg were in the ranges of 80.8%-113.3% and 0.6%-16.3%, respectively. Compared with the reported methods for the analysis of multiple pesticide residues in tobacco, the proposed method has the advantages of simple to operate, high clean-up ability and less time-consuming in clean-up process.

Simultaneous detection of ten kinds of insecticide residues in honey and pollen using UPLC-MS/MS with graphene and carbon nanotubes as adsorption and purification materials

An analytical method of simultaneous detection of ten insecticide residues in honey and pollen was established. The samples were purified with QuEChERS approach using new adsorbents and analyzed with UPLC-MS/MS. The results showed that both of graphene and carbon nanotubes were highly efficient adsorbents for the dSPE clean up to eliminate coextractives in the samples, and graphene was superior to carbon nanotubes for the detection of pesticide residues in honey and pollen samples. The proposed method was used to detect pesticide residues in 25 honey samples and 30 pollen samples which were randomly collected from more than ten provinces in China. All honey samples contain 1-27 μg/kg of chlorpyrifos residues. Only 4% of the honey samples were detected containing acetamiprid and imidacloprid, while the other seven pesticides were not detected. Chlorpyrifos residues were found in all pollen samples (5-66 μg/kg), among which twenty percent exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs, 50 μg/kg, European Commission Regulation). Most of the pollen samples containing pesticide concentrations higher than MRLs were collected from rape, followed by lotus, camellia, and rose. Besides, 36.7% and 33.3% of the pollen samples had imidacloprid and flupyradifurone higher than 5 μg/kg. A total of 26.7% pollen samples were detected containing bifenthrin, while none of the other six pesticides were detected in pollen samples.

A Comprehensive Review on Metal Organic Framework Based Preconcentration Strategies for Chromatographic Analysis of Organic Pollutants

Organic pollutants (OPs) are of worldwide concern for being hazardous to human existence and natural flora and fauna in view of their contaminating nature, bio-aggregation properties and long range movement abilities in environment. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new kind of crystalline porous material, composed of metal ions and multi dentate organic ligands with well-defined co-ordination geometry exhibiting promising application respect to adsorptive evacuation of OPs for chromatographic analysis. Applications of MOFs as preconcentration material and column packing material are reviewed. Key analytical characteristics of MOF based preconcentration techniques and coupled chromatographic procedures are summarized in detail. MOF based preconcentration strategies are compared with conventional sorbent based extraction techniques for thorough evaluation of performance of MOF materials.

Risk assessment and the adsorptive removal of some pesticides from synthetic wastewater: a review

Background

The need for environmental protection and remediation processes has been an increasing global concern. Pesticides are used as biological agents, disinfectants, antimicrobials, and also in a mixture of some chemical substances. Their modes of application are through selective dispensing and attenuation processes which act upon any pest that compete with the production, processing, and storage of foods and also in agricultural commodes. The pests might comprise weeds, insects, birds, fish, and microbes.

Pesticides are commonly found in water surface, landfill leachate, ground water, and wastewater as pollutant. An overview of recently studied adsorption processes for the pesticide elimination from polluted water has been reported in this study utilizing activated carbon, clay materials, biomass materials, metal organic frame work, graphene, and carbon-based materials as well as agricultural wastes as adsorbents. The risk assessment and cost analysis of adsorbents were also provided.

Conclusion

Evidences from literature recommend modified adsorbent and composite materials to have a prospective use in pesticide removal from wastewater. The adsorption data obtained fitted into different isotherm and kinetic models and also the thermodynamic aspect have been discussed.

New frontiers and prospects of metal-organic frameworks for removal, determination, and sensing of pesticides

Pesticides have been widely used in agriculture to control, reduce, and kill insects. Humans are also being using pesticides to control insidious animals in daily life. By these practices, a huge volume of pesticides is introduced to the environment. Despite broad-spectrum applicability, pesticides also have hazardous effects on both humans and animals at high and low concentrations. Long-term exposure to pesticides can cause different diseases, like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testis, and ovaries. Reproductive disorders from pesticides include birth defects, stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, sterility, and infertility. Therefore, the application of determination and treatment methods for pre-concentration and removal of these toxic materials from the environment appears a vital concern. To date, different materials and approaches have been employed for these purposes. Among these approaches, multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-assisted adsorption and determination processes have always been in the spotlight. These facts are due to exclusive properties of MOFs in terms of the crystallinity, large surface area, high chemical, and physical stability, and controllable structure as well as unique features of adsorption and determination process in terms of simple, easy, cheap, available method and ability to use in large and industrial scales. In the present work, we illustrate the exceptional features of MOFs as well as the possible mechanism for the adsorption of pesticides by MOFs. The use of these fantastic materials for pre-concentration and removal of pesticides are extensively explored. In addition, the performance of MOFs was compared with other adsorbents. Finally, the new frontiers and prospects of MOFs for the determination, sensing, and removal of pesticides are presented.

Nanoparticles Based Extraction Strategies for Accurate and Sensitive Determination of Different Pesticides

Sample preparation methods have become indispensable steps in analytical measurements not only to lower the detection limit but also to eliminate the matrix effect although more sophisticated instruments are being commonly used in routine analyses. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is one of the main extraction/preconcentration methods used to extract and purify target analytes along with simple and rapid procedures but some limitations have led to seek for an easy, sensitive and fast extraction methods with analyte-selective sorbents. Nanoparticles with different modifications have been used as spotlight to enhance extraction efficiency of target pesticides from complicated matrices. Carbon-based, metal and metal oxides, silica and polymer-based nanoparticles have been explored as promising sorbents for pesticide extraction. In this review, different types of nanoparticles used in the preconcentration of pesticides in various samples are outlined and examined. Latest studies in the literature are discussed in terms of their instrumental detection, sample matrix and limit of detection values. Novel strategies and future directions of nanoparticles used in the extraction and preconcentration of pesticides are also discussed.
