Application of polydopamine functionalized magnetic graphene in triazole fungicides residue analysis

Spacer arm of ionic liquids facilitated laccase immobilization on magnetic graphene enhancing its stability and catalytic performance

To fulfill the requirements of environmental protection, a magnetically recoverable immobilized laccase has been developed for water pollutant treatment. In order to accomplish this objective, we propose a polydopamine-coated magnetic graphene material that addresses the challenges associated with accumulation caused by electrostatic interactions between graphene and enzyme molecules, which can lead to protein denaturation and inactivation. To achieve this, we present a polydopamine-coated magnetic graphene material that binds to the enzyme molecule through flexible spacer arms formed by ionic liquids. The immobilized laccase exhibited a good protective effect on laccase and showed a high stability and recycling ability. Laccase-ILs-PDA-MGO has a wider pH and temperature range and retains about 80% of its initial activity even after incubation at 50 °C for 2 h, which is 2.2 times more active than free laccase. Furthermore, the laccase-ILs-PDA-MGO exhibited a remarkable removal efficiency of 97.0% and 83.9% toward 2,4-DCP and BPA within 12 h at room temperature. More importantly, laccase-ILs-PDA-MGO can be recovered from the effluent and used multiple times for organic pollutant removal, while maintaining a relative removal efficiency of 80.6% for 2,4-DCP and 81.4% for BPA after undergoing seven cycles. In this study, a strategy for laccase immobilization by utilizing ILs spacer arms to modify GO aims to provide valuable insights into the advancement of efficient enzyme immobilization techniques and the practical application of immobilized enzymes in wastewater treatment.

Determination of Azole Fungicide Residues in Fresh Juice by Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction Based on Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al) Sorbent in Combination with High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph

In this work, a magnetic adsorption material based on metal-organic framework (Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al)) was synthesized and used as an adsorbent in the process of magnetic solid phase extraction. Then, a high-performance liquid chromatograph was used to quantitatively detect triazole fungicides in samples. In order to verify the successful preparation of the material, a series of characterization analyses were carried out. Besides, the key parameters that may affect the extraction efficiency have been optimized, and under optimal conditions the three triazole fungicides showed good linearity in the range of 10-1000 μg/L (R2 ≥ 0.9796); Limit of detections were ranged from 0.013 to 0.030 μg/mL. Finally, the established method was applied to the detection of triazole fungicides in four fresh juice samples. The results showed that the target analyte was not detected in all the test samples. By detecting the recoveries (73.3-104.3%) and coefficient variation (RSD ≤ 6.8%) of triazole fungicides in fortified samples, it proved that this established method meets the requirements of pesticide residue analysis and showed excellent application potential.

Recent progress in magnetic polydopamine composites for pollutant removal in wastewater treatment

Various water pollution issues pose a significant threat to human water safety. Magnetic polydopamine composites (MPCs), which can be separated by magnetic fields after the adsorption process, exhibit outstanding adsorption capacity and heterogeneous catalytic properties, making them promising materials for water treatment applications. In particular, by modifying the polydopamine (PDA) coating, MPCs can acquire enhanced high reactivity, antibacterial properties, and biocompatibility. This also provides an attractive platform for further fabrication of hybrid materials with specific adsorption, catalytic, antibacterial, and water-oil separation capabilities. To systematically provide the background knowledge and recent research advances in MPCs, this paper presents a critical review of MPCs for water treatment in terms of both structure and mechanisms of effect in applications. Firstly, the impact of different PDA positions within the composite structure is investigated to summarize the optimization of properties contributed by PDA when acting as the shell, core, or bridge. The roles of various secondary modifications of magnetic materials by PDA in addressing water pollution problems are explored. It is anticipated that this work will be a stimulus for further research and development of magnetic composite materials with real-world application potential.

Vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on the hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-based ferrofluid for extraction and detection of myclobutanil

A vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-DLLME) procedure using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent-based ferrofluid (HDES-FF) as an extractant was established. The developed sample preparation method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) was applied to the pretreatment and determination of myclobutanil (MYC) in fruit juice. Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent, synthesized by n-decanoic acid and DL-menthol, was as a carrier and combined with magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@OA) to form HDES-FF as an extractant with high extraction capacity. The synthesized materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Parameters affecting extraction efficiency were optimized using single-factor experiments and Box-Behnken design via response surface methodology (BBD-RSM). Parallel tests were performed three times under the optimal conditions predicted by the model, yielding an actual mean recovery of 94.77% with RSD of 2.7% (n = 3) and an enrichment factor of 41.8 ± 0.98 (mean value ± SD, n = 3). Under the optimal conditions, the linear range was 1.0-100.0 µg·mL-1; the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.25 and 0.80 µg·mL-1, respectively. The average spiked recoveries in the samples ranged from 98.2 to 100.5% with intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 1.2-3.5% (n = 3) and inter-day RSDs of 1.1-3.8% (n = 3). Finally, the method was successfully applied to the determination of MYC antimicrobial agent in different fruit juice samples. The proposed HDES-FF-VA-DLLME/HPLC-DAD method was verified to widely apply to the extraction of triazole fungicides.

Rapid and simple determination of organophosphorus pesticides in urine using polydopamine-modified monolithic spin column extraction combined with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry

The determination of organophosphorus pesticides in urine is useful for evaluating human exposure. In this study, a simple micro-solid-phase extraction method based on a polydopamine-modified monolithic spin column combined with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was developed for the determination of six organophosphorus pesticides (dimethoate, dichlorvos, carbofuran, methidathion, phosalone, and chlorpyrifos) in urine samples. A methacrylate polymer monolithic support was prepared in situ in the spin column, and dopamine solution was repeatedly passed through the monolith matrix via centrifugation to generate a polydopamine layer in the polymeric network. All extraction steps were performed via centrifugation. The monolith exhibited good permeability, which enabled high-flow-rate sample loading and significantly reduced the sample pre-treatment time. The addition of polydopamine significantly improved the extraction efficiency of the monolithic spin column owing to the catechol and amine groups in dopamine, which can enhance hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. Factors affecting the extraction, including the solution pH, centrifugation speed, and desorption solvent, were investigated to determine the optimal extraction conditions. Under the optimal conditions, the OPP detection limits were 0.02-1.32 µg/L. The relative standard deviations of the single column (n = 5) and column-to-column (n = 3) precision for the extraction method were <11%. The monolithic spin column exhibited high stability and could be used for more than 40 extraction cycles. The recoveries for spiked urine samples were 72.1-109.3% (RSDs: 1.6-7.9%). The developed method was successfully applied to the simple and rapid analysis of organophosphorus pesticides in urine samples.

Magnetic nanoparticles covalently immobilizing epidermal growth factor receptor by SNAP-Tag protein as a platform for drug discovery

Magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) cloaked with cell membranes expressing high levels of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have been used to screen for EGFR-targeting active compounds in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations. However, previous strategies involved physical immobilization of the biomaterials on the surface of the nanocarrier, resulting in highly unstable platforms since the biological materials could dislodge easily. Chemical bonding of biomaterials to the nanoparticles surface can improve the stability of the biomimetic platforms. In this study, membrane fragments from cells expressing SNAP-Tag-EGFR (ST-EGFR) were immobilized on the surface of magnetic NPs. The ST-EGFR magnetic cell membrane nanoparticles (ST-EGFR/MCMNs) showed greater stability, and higher binding capacity, selectivity adsorption of gefitinib after 7 days compared to the un-immobilized magnetic cell membrane nanoparticles (EGFR/MCMNs). The ST-EGFR/MCMNs were used to screen for the EGFR-targeting active compounds of Zanthoxyli Radix (ZR), and identified toddalolactone and nitidine chloride. The latter significantly inhibited the proliferation of EGFR-overexpressing cancer cells, and was more effective compared to gefitinib. This innovative technology can be used to rapidly screen for active compounds from complex extracts, and aid in drug discovery.

Hydrophilic arginine-functionalized mesoporous polydopamine-graphene oxide composites for glycopeptides analysis

Considering the importance of glycopeptides in the clinical diagnosis of cancer and some serious diseases, the identification of glycopeptides from complex biological samples has attracted considerable attention. Effective pre-enrichment before mass spectrometry analysis plays an important role. In this work, a kind of hydrophilic two-dimensional composites (denoted as GO@MPDA@Arg) based on mesoporous polydopamine-graphene oxide were used to selectively enrich glycopeptides in biological samples. The mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) layer self-assembled with template Pluronic F127 provided more binding sites to load arginine, and bound arginine enhanced the hydrophilicity of the material. As a result, GO@MPDA@Arg composites exhibited excellent enrichment performance for glycopeptides, containing good selectivity (IgG digests : BSA digests = 1:50, molar ratio), low detection limit for IgG digests (10 fmol μL^-1), high loading capacity for IgG digests (200 μg mg^-1), and good size exclusion (IgG digests : IgG : BSA = 1:100:100, mass ratio). In addition, mouse brain tissue was selected as the actual biological sample to further study the enrichment effect of GO@MPDA@Arg composites. In three parallel experiments, a total of 401 glycopeptides belonging to 233 glycoproteins were enriched from 200 μg digestion of mouse brain extract. The enrichment results demonstrate that GO@MPDA@Arg composites have application potential for glycopeptides enrichment in protein post-translational modification research.

Rapid magnetic enrichment and sensitive detection of Sudan pollutants with nanoscale zero valent iron-based nanomaterials in combination with liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector

In present work, we reported a new nanomaterial nano Fe⁰ decorated with SiO₂ and dopamine by self-assembly method (Fe@SiO₂@PDA). A sensitive method for determination of Sudan pollutants in aqueous samples was developed using Fe@SiO₂@PDA as magnetic solid phase extraction adsorbents prior to high-performance liquid chromatography with variable wavelength detector. The possible parameters which would affect the enrichment have been optimized. The best parameters were as follows: elutent, 4.5 mL methanol; adsorbent dosage, 30 mg; adsorption time, 20 min; elution time, 18 min; sample pH 7; sample volume, 40 mL. The experimental results demonstrated that Fe@SiO₂@PDA exhibited good adsorption properties to Sudan Red dyes. The established method provided excellent linear ranges over 0.01-50 μg L^-1 and detection limits ranged from 2.0 to 5.1 ng L^-1 for Sudan red I-IV. The developed method was also evaluated with real water samples and the results demonstrated that it was of applicative value owing to its merits including robustness, easy operation, fastness, cheapness and high enrichment efficiency, and had great prospect in environmental fields.

Facile Fabrication of a Functional Filter Tip for Highly Efficient Reduction of Nicotine Content in Mainstream Smoke

The nicotine addiction problem is of great concern, particularly in adolescents. Notably, nicotine addiction drives humans to continue smoking. Notably, several diseases and disorders are caused by smoking. To date, various adsorbents have been proposed to develop a functionalization filter tip for reducing nicotine content in mainstream smoke. However, the nicotine adsorption efficiencies of most of the reported functionalization filter tips were not satisfactory, and their preparation process was complex and time-consuming. Herein, we demonstrate a highly active and adsorbing filter tip for cigarettes, fabricated by decorating polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of a commercial filter tip in situ. The PDA coating on the filter tip was obtained by the self-polymerization of dopamine (DA) within 16 h, which was quicker and easier than the preparation processes of other reported functionalized filter tips. Significantly, the PDA-decorated filter tip had a nicotine adsorption efficiency as high as ∼95%, which was much higher than most of the commercial filter tips.

Defective Zr-based metal-organic frameworks as sorbent for the determination of fungicides in environmental water samples by rapid dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry

In this work, defective Zr-based metal-organic framework was successfully synthesized and evaluated as a dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction sorbent for efficient preconcentration and determination of fungicides in complex water samples. The defective Zr-based metal-organic framework crystal with increased adsorption capacity was successfully synthesized by employing formic acid as the modulator. The extraction conditions, including the pH, extraction time, desorption solvent and desorption time, were comprehensively investigated. Under optimum conditions, it was found that dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction method, coupled with liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, exhibited a good linear relationship with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9980. The relative standard deviations of inter-day and intra-day precisions ranged from 2.6 to 9.2% and the limits of detection ranged from 0.004 to 0.036 μg/L. These merits, combined with their satisfactory recoveries (>80%), suggested the great potential of defective Zr-based metal-organic framework as a new adsorbent for efficient extraction of trace fungicides. This method exhibits good application potential for the pretreatment of fungicides from environmental water samples.

Extraction and electrochemical sensing of pesticides in food and environmental samples by use of polydopamine-based materials

Polydopamine has high adsorption capacities for pollutants such as pesticides in food and environmental matrices. Consequently, it has found applications in some sorbent-based micro-extraction techniques such as solid phase micro-extraction and magnetic solid phase extraction. This paper gives a detailed review of the application of polydopamine-based adsorbents for the extraction of pesticides in food and environmental matrices using these techniques. The adhesive properties of polydopamine have made it to be a suitable material for the immobilisation of the components of electrochemical sensors used to detect pesticides in food and environmental matrices. This paper also gives a comprehensive review on the application of polydopamine in electrochemical sensors such as acetylcholinesterase sensors, molecularly imprinted sensors and aptasensors. The use of polydopamine-based adsorbents during the extraction and electrochemical sensing of pesticides in food and environmental matrices is not free of challenges. In this review, the challenges encountered during the use of polydopamine-based adsorbents are also discussed.

Greenness of magnetic nanomaterials in miniaturized extraction techniques: A review

Green analytical chemistry principles should be followed, as much as possible, and particularly during the development of analytical sample preparation methods. In the past few years, outstanding materials such as ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, carbonaceous materials, molecularly imprinted materials, and many others, have been introduced in a wide variety of miniaturized techniques in order to reduce the amount of solvents and sorbents required during the analytical sample preparation step while pursuing more efficient extraction methods. Among them, magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) have gained special attention due to their versatile properties. Mainly, their ability to be separated from the sample matrix using an external magnetic field (thus enormously simplifying the entire process) and their easy combination with other materials, which implies the inclusion of a countless number of different functionalities, highly specific in some cases. Therefore, MNMs can be used as sorbents or as magnetic support for other materials which do not have magnetic properties, the latter permiting their combination with novel materials. The greenness of these magnetic sorbents in miniaturized extractions techniques is generally demonstrated in terms of their ease of separation and amount of sorbent required, while the nature of the material itself is left unnoticed. However, the synthesis of MNMs is not always as green as their applications, and the resulting MNMs are not always as safe as desired. Is the analytical sample preparation field ready for using green magnetic nanomaterials? This review offers an overview, from a green analytical chemistry perspective, of the current state of the use of MNMs as sorbents in microextraction strategies, their preparation, and the analytical performance offered, together with a critical discussion on where efforts should go.

Hydroxyl-containing porous organic framework coated stir bar sorption extraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector for analysis of triazole fungicides in grape and cabbage samples

In this work, a hydroxyl-containing porous organic framework (HC-POF) was prepared by a simple solvothermal reaction with 1,4-phthalaldehyde and phloroglucinol as monomers. Sol-gel method was used to coat HC-POF on the glass stir bar. The prepared HC-POF coated stir bar shows better extraction performance for six triazole fungicides (TFs) compared to commercial polydimethylsiloxane and ethylene glycol-silicone coated stir bars. Fourier transform infrared Spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron Spectrometry were used to explore interactions between HC-POF coating and TFs. It is assumed that the coating mainly adsorbs TFs through π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Based on this fact, a new method of HC-POF coated stir bar sorptive extraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector was developed for the determination of six TFs in grape and cabbage samples. A series of extraction and desorption conditions were carefully optimized, including salt concentration, sample solution pH, stirring rate and desorption solvent. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the proposed method displayed limits of detection in the range of 0.022 -0.071 μg L^-1, which is the lowest among the reported SBSE methods for target TFs analysis. The linear range for six TFs was 0.1/0.2-500 μg L^-1 and the recoveries for the spiked grape and cabbage were 81.0-109% and 80.7-111%, respectively.

The Current Role of Graphene-Based Nanomaterials in the Sample Preparation Arena

Since its discovery in 2004 by Novoselov et al., graphene has attracted increasing attention in the scientific community due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, such as thermal/mechanical resistance, electronic stability, high Young's modulus, and fast mobility of charged atoms. In addition, other remarkable characteristics support its use in analytical chemistry, especially as sorbent. For these reasons, graphene-based materials (GBMs) have been used as a promising material in sample preparation. Graphene and graphene oxide, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties as a large surface area, good mechanical strength, thermal stability, and delocalized π-electrons, are ideal sorbents, especially for molecules containing aromatic rings. They have been used in several sample preparation techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), as well as in miniaturized modes as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in their different configurations. However, the reduced size and weight of graphene sheets can limit their use since they commonly aggregate to each other, causing clogging in high-pressure extractive devices. One way to overcome it and other drawbacks consists of covalently attaching the graphene sheets to support materials (e.g., silica, polymers, and magnetically modified supports). Also, graphene-based materials can be further chemically modified to favor some interactions with specific analytes, resulting in more efficient hybrid sorbents with higher selectivity for specific chemical classes. As a result of this wide variety of graphene-based sorbents, several studies have shown the current potential of applying GBMs in different fields such as food, biological, pharmaceutical, and environmental applications. Within such a context, this review will focus on the last five years of achievements in graphene-based materials for sample preparation techniques highlighting their synthesis, chemical structure, and potential application for the extraction of target analytes in different complex matrices.
