Magnetic mesoporous carbon nanosheets derived from two-dimensional bimetallic metal-organic frameworks for magnetic solid-phase extraction of nitroimidazole antibiotics

Self-assembled flower-like carbon nanosheets for magnetic solid-phase extraction of microcystins from aquatic organism

Adsorbents with good dispersibility and high efficiency are crucial for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). In this study, flower-like magnetic nanomaterials (F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C) were successfully prepared by calcination of metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors that was stacked by two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet. The synthesized F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C has a flower-like layered structure with a large amount of pore space, promoting the rapid diffusion of targets. In addition, Zn2+ doped in MOF precursors was still retained that further produced strong metal chelation with targets. The unique structure of F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C was used as MSPE adsorbent, and combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) for extraction of three microcystins (MCs) detection, including microcystin-LR (MC-LR), microcystin-RR (MC-RR), microcystin-YR (MC-YR). The resulting method has a detection limit of 0.2-1.0 pg mL-1, a linear dynamic range of 0.6-500.0 pg mL-1 and has good linearity (R ≥ 0.9996). Finally, the established method was applied to the highly selective enrichment of MCs in biological samples, successfully detecting trace amounts of MCs (8.4-15.0 pg mL-1) with satisfactory recovery rates (83.7-103.1 %). The results indicated that flower-like magnetic F-Ni@NiO@ZnO2-C was a promising adsorbent, providing great potential for the determination of trace amounts of MCs in biological samples.

Detection methods for antibiotics in wastewater: a review

Antibiotics are widely used as fungicides because of their antibacterial and bactericidal effects. However, it is necessary to control their dosage. If the amount of antbiotics is too much, it cannot be completely metabolized and absorbed, will pollute the environment, and have a great impact on human health. Many antibiotics usually left in factory or aquaculture wastewater pollute the environment, so it is vital to detect the content of antibiotics in wastewater. This article summarizes several common methods of antibiotic detection and pretreatment steps. The detection methods of antibiotics in wastewater mainly include immunoassay, instrumental analysis method, and sensor. Studies have shown that immunoassay can detect deficient concentrations of antibiotics, but it is affected by external factors leading to errors. The detection speed of the instrumental analysis method is fast, but the repeatability is poor, the price is high, and the operation is complicated. The sensor is a method that is currently increasingly studied, including electrochemical sensors, optical sensors, biosensors, photoelectrochemical sensors, and surface plasmon resonance sensors. It has the advantages of fast detection speed, high accuracy, and strong sensitivity. However, the reproducibility and stability of the sensor are poor. At present, there is no method that can comprehensively integrate the advantages. This paper aims to review the enrichment and detection methods of antibiotics in wastewater from 2020 to the present. It also aims to provide some ideas for future research directions in this field.

ε-Poly-l-lysine: A Naturally Occurring Biodegradable Polypeptide for Selective Detection of 5-Nitroimidazole Antibiotics in Animal Products and Living Cells via Fluorescence

The 5-nitroimidazole (5-NI) class of antibiotics, such as metronidazole, ornidazole, secnidazole, and tinidazole, are widely used to prevent bacterial infection in humans and livestock industries. However, their overuse contaminates the farmed animal products and water bodies. Hence, a selective, sensitive, and cost-effective method to detect 5-NI antibiotics is the need of the hour. Herein, we report a rapid, inexpensive, and efficient sensing system to detect 5-NI drugs using an as-prepared solution of ε-poly-l-lysine (ε-PL), a naturally occurring and biodegradable homopolypeptide that has an intrinsic fluorescence via clustering-triggered emission. The low nanomolar detection limit (3.25-3.97 nM) for the aforementioned representative 5-NI drugs highlights the sensitivity of the system, outperforming most of the reported sensors alike. The resulting fluorescence quenching was found to be static in nature. Importantly, excellent recovery (100.26-104.41%) was obtained for all real samples and animal products tested. Visual detection was demonstrated by using paper strips and silica gel for practical applications. Furthermore, ε-PL could detect 5-NI antibiotics in living 3T3-L1 mouse fibroblast cells via cellular imaging. Taken together, the present work demonstrates the detection of 5-NI antibiotics using a biocompatible natural polypeptide, ε-PL, and represents a simple and inexpensive analytical tool for practical application.

Marine toxins in seafood: Recent updates on sample pretreatment and determination techniques

Marine toxins can lead to varying degrees of human poisoning, often resulting in fatal symptoms and causing significant economic losses in seafood-producing regions. To gain a deeper comprehension of the role of marine toxins in seafood and their impact on the environment, it is imperative to develop rapid, cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient methods for sample pretreatment and determination to mitigate adverse impacts of marine toxins. This review presents a comprehensive overview of advancements made in sample pretreatment and determination techniques for marine toxins since 2017. The advantages and disadvantages of various technologies were critically examined. Additionally, the current challenges and future development strategies for the analysis of marine toxins are provided.

In situ growth of ZIF-67 to construct core-shell mosaic structural composites for efficient extraction of benzoylurea insecticides

A novel mosaic structure Silica@C/Co@ZIF-67 composite was synthesized by successfully embedding Co nanoparticles on the surface of silica spheres with the help of thermoplastic polyethyleneimine by carbon-reduction. The ZIF-67 half-shell layer structure was synthesized by the in-situ growth of ZIF-67 on the surface of silica spheres through the coordination of 2-methylimidazole with Co metal nodes. The composite was used as a magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent combined with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV) for the extraction and determination of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in vegetables and tea. Based on the presence of π-π, hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions between Silica@C/Co@ZIF-67 and BUs, the BUs were rapidly captured by the composites resulting in high adsorption performance. Under the optimal extraction parameters, the linear ranges were 0.3-200 µg L-1 for diflubenzuron, 0.6-200 µg L-1 for chlorbenzuron, and 1.0-200 µg L-1 for triflumuron, teflubenzuron, and flufenoxuron, with correlation coefficients (R2) greater than 0.9991. The limits of detection (LODs) of the method were 0.1-0.3 μg L-1, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.2-3.0% for intra-day and 2.6-4.6% for inter-day. In the spiked recovery experiments of vegetables and tea, the recoveries of the five kinds of BUs ranged from 75.8 to 112.9%. In addition, after 10 repetitions using Silica@C/Co@ZIF-67, the recoveries of the five kinds of BUs were still as high as 78.4 to 83.9%.

Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 based on magnetic solid phase extraction for determination of organic UV filters in environmental water samples

In this work, a nanocomposite structured magnetic metal-organic framework named as Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 was prepared via a simple hydrothermal approach. The as-mentioned nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. Using the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 as a nanosorbent, an easy and highly effective approach was developed to preconcentrate nine organic UV filters before gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Different conditions influencing the extraction efficiency encompassing the sorbent amount, nature and volume of desorption solvent, desorption time, pH of the sample, and extraction time, were examined. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2-based magnetic solid phase extraction and GC-MS (MSPE-GC-MS) demonstrated linearity in the range of 0.03-1500 ng/L (R2 ≥ 0.9974) and the reproducibility, expressed as RSD, was ≤7.5%. The limits of detection ranged between 0.01 and 0.07 ng/L and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.03-0.4 ng/L. Finally, the suggested approach was satisfactorily utilized to determine nine organic UV filters in different water samples (analytical recoveries between 86.5% and 104.2%).

Biochar/sodium alginate mixed matrix membrane as adsorbent for in-syringe solid-phase extraction towards trace nitroimidazoles in water samples prior to ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis

In the present work, the herb (Poria cocos (Schw.) Wolf) residue, as an environmentally friendly and renewable biomass source, was converted into novel biochar. Biochar/sodium alginate mixed matrix membrane was fabricated. On this basis, a biochar/sodium alginate mixed matrix membrane-based in-syringe solid-phase extraction was developed combined with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to determine nitroimidazoles in water samples. The factors including times of exaction, type, and volume of elution solvent, and sample solution pH were thoroughly optimized. Then the correlation coefficient was 0.9995-0.9997. The limit of detection of four analytes was between 0.006 and 0.014 ng/mL, and the recovery was between 79.02% and 99.1%. Consequently, the established method would provide a new perspective on monitoring nitroimidazoles in water samples.

Functional MOF-Based Materials for Environmental and Biomedical Applications: A Critical Review

Over the last ten years, there has been a growing interest in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are a unique category of porous materials that combine organic and inorganic components. MOFs have garnered significant attention due to their highly favorable characteristics, such as environmentally friendly nature, enhanced surface area and pore volume, hierarchical arrangements, and adjustable properties, as well as their versatile applications in fields such as chemical engineering, materials science, and the environmental and biomedical sectors. This article centers on examining the advancements in using MOFs for environmental remediation purposes. Additionally, it discusses the latest developments in employing MOFs as potential tools for disease diagnosis and drug delivery across various ailments, including cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, and ocular diseases. Firstly, a concise overview of MOF evolution and the synthetic techniques employed for creating MOFs are provided, presenting their advantages and limitations. Subsequently, the challenges, potential avenues, and perspectives for future advancements in the utilization of MOFs in the respective application domains are addressed. Lastly, a comprehensive comparison of the materials presently employed in these applications is conducted.

A new approach of magnetic field application in miniaturized pipette-tip extraction for trace analysis of four synthetic hormones in breast milk samples

Herein, a novel homemade electrical device was designed, including two pieces of external neodymium magnets, providing a reciprocating magnetic field to introduce a magnetic-assisted dispersive pipette-tip micro solid-phase extraction. To evaluate the performance efficiency of the proposed method, a novel magnetic calcined GO/SiO₂@Co-Fe nanocube sorbent was synthesized, filled into the pipette-tip, exposed to the reciprocating magnetic field, and applied for the preconcentration of some hormone therapy drugs in human biological matrices. The effective adsorption and desorption parameters were optimized using a rotatable central composite design and one-variable-at-a-time approaches. Under the optimized conditions, the target analytes' detection limits were found to be below 0.02 ng mL^-1. Moreover, the calibration curves were linear in the range of 0.03-500.00 ng mL^-1 (R² > 0.9966), with RSDs% less than 7.8 %. Eventually, the established method was applied to extract the analytes from breast milk samples, followed by LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis.

Porphyrin-based hypercrosslinked polymers as sorbents for efficient extraction of nitroimidazoles from water, honey and chicken breast

In this work, a series of 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP)-based hyper crosslinked polymers were prepared by Friedel-Crafts reaction. Among them, the HCP-TPP-BCMBP, which was prepared by using TPP as the monomer and with 4,4'-Bis(chloromethyl)-1,1'-biphenyl (BCMBP) as the cross-linking agent, had the best adsorption capability for the enrichment of the nitroimidazoles of dimetridazole, ronidazole, secnidazole, metronidazole, and ornidazole. Then, a solid-phase extraction (SPE) method with the HCP-TPP-BCMBP as adsorbent coupled with HPLC-UV detection for the determination of nitroimidazole residues in honey, environmental water, and chicken breast samples was established. The influence of the main factors that affect the SPE, i.e., sample solution volume, sample loading rate, sample pH, and eluent and its volume, were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection (S/N = 3) for the nitroimidazoles were measured to be in the range of 0.02-0.04 ng mL^-1, 0.4-1.0 ng g^-1 and 0.5-0.7 ng g^-1 for environmental water, honey, and chicken breast samples, with the determination coefficients being in the range of 0.9933-0.9998. The analytes recoveries by the method in fortified samples fell in the range from 91.1% to 102.7% for environmental water, from 83.2% to 105.0% for honey, and from 85.9% to 103.0% for chicken breast samples, and the relative standard deviations for the determination were less than 10%. It shows that the HCP-TPP-BCMBP has a strong adsorption capability for some polar compounds.

Monolithic and compressible MIL-101(Cr)/cellulose aerogel/melamine sponge based microextraction in packed syringe towards trace nitroimidazoles in water samples prior to UPLC-MS/MS analysis

In this study, MIL-101(Cr)/cellulose aerogel/melamine sponge composite was fabricated through a simple soaking method. The composite was packed in the syringe barrel and used as the sorbent for microextraction in packed syringe. Coupled to UPLC-MS/MS, the proposed method was employed for the analysis of trace nitroimidazoles in water samples. The parameters affecting the extraction efficiency, including sorbent type, pH value of sample solution, sample solution volume and elution solvent were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, good linearity (r > 0.99 for five analytes), high sensitivity (limit of detection: 8.250-16.33 ng L^-1), ideal precision (intra-day precision: 1.1%-5.3%, inter-day precision: 1.8%-6.7%) and satisfactory accuracy (recovery: 70.4%-96.7%) were achieved. The proposed method was proved to be efficient, easily operative and environmentally friendly.

Highly sensitive detection of okadaic acid in seawater by magnetic solid-phase extraction based on low-cost metal/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes

Algae toxins pose a severe threat to human health all over the world. In this study, magnetic metal/nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (M-NCNTs) were facilely synthesized based on one-step carbonization and applied for magnetic solid-phase extraction of okadaic acid (OA) from seawater followed by high performance liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) analyses. Differences in the physicochemical properties of the three prepared materials (Fe/Co/Ni-NCNTs) were investigated to confirm the best extraction material. Among them, Ni-NCNTs demonstrated a faster extraction rate (10 min) and higher adsorption capacity (223.5 mg g^-1), mainly due to the higher specific surface area, suitable pore structure and more abundant pyridine nitrogen ring. Under the optimal conditions, the calibration curve was linear over the range (1.0-800.0 pg mL^-1) with good determination coefficients (R) of 0.9992. The limit of detection (LOD) obtained in multiple replicates was 0.4 pg mL^-1. Three seawater samples were measured by the developed method, 12.3 pg mL^-1 of OA was detected with a satisfying recovery (88.6%-106.7%) and acceptable repeatability (RSD ≤ 4.8%, n = 6). The results demonstrate that M-NCNTs materials are a promising candidate for magnetic solid-phase extraction. Benefiting from its high extraction and interference resistance, the established analytical method is expected to be extended to detect other marine environmental pollutions.

Facile synthesis of hypercrosslinked polymer as high-efficiency adsorbent for the enrichment of nitroimidazoles from water, honey and chicken meat

Design and fabrication of functionalized hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) for enhancing their performance by using green renewable monomers has attracted considerable research interest. In this study, hydroxyl‑functional HCP (labeled as OHHCP) was prepared via the knitting method by applying natural naringenin as a monomer for the first time. Due to the good hydrophilicity and strong H-bonding ability, the OHHCP showed high extraction capacity for nitroimidazoles. Thus, it was successfully applied as a potent adsorbent for solid phase extraction of five nitroimidazoles in water, honey and chicken meat, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector analysis. At the optimized conditions, the limit of detections (S/N = 3) of the proposed method for water, honey and chicken samples were 0.02 - 0.06 ng mL^-1, 0.5 - 1.0 ng g^-1 and 0.8 - 1.0 ng g^-1, respectively. The recoveries were 80.0 - 110%, and the relative standard deviations were below 10.0%. The OHHCP also displayed good application prospects for other organic compounds with H-bonding capability. This study highlights the facile preparation of OH-functionalized HCPs from renewable and natural resources as potent adsorbents for polar compounds.

Determination of free fatty acids in Antarctic krill meals based on matrix solid phase dispersion

Amino-modified mesoporous silicawas prepared by modifying mesoporous silica with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and used as adsorbents in matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) to analyze free fatty acids (FFAs) in krill meals for the first time. The adsorption-desorption experiments and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed amino-modified mesoporous silica with ordered mesoporous structure was successfully synthesized. The adsorption experiments including static and dynamic adsorption showed thatabsorption capacity of amino-modified mesoporous silica towards FFAs was better than that of aminated silicon microspheres at all concentrations. Under optimal extraction conditions, outstanding linearity (0.1-12000 nmol g^-1), low LODs (0.05-1.25 nmol g^-1), satisfactory recoveries (82.17-96.43%) and precisions (0.19-5.26%) were obtained. Moreover, the application of MSPD for FFAs analysis avoided complicated lipid extraction procedures and accomplished the homogenization, crushing, extraction and cleaning of the samples in one step. Consequently, this approach provides an alternative choice to the existing approach for analyzing FFAs in solid and semi-solid samples.

Nanomaterials-assisted metabolic analysis toward in vitro diagnostics

In vitro diagnostics (IVD) has played an indispensable role in healthcare system by providing necessary information to indicate disease condition and guide therapeutic decision. Metabolic analysis can be the primary choice to facilitate the IVD since it characterizes the downstream metabolites and offers real-time feedback of the human body. Nanomaterials with well-designed composition and nanostructure have been developed for the construction of high-performance detection platforms toward metabolic analysis. Herein, we summarize the recent progress of nanomaterials-assisted metabolic analysis and the related applications in IVD. We first introduce the important role that nanomaterials play in metabolic analysis when coupled with different detection platforms, including electrochemical sensors, optical spectrometry, and mass spectrometry. We further highlight the nanomaterials-assisted metabolic analysis toward IVD applications, from the perspectives of both the targeted biomarker quantitation and untargeted fingerprint extraction. This review provides fundamental insights into the function of nanomaterials in metabolic analysis, thus facilitating the design of next-generation diagnostic devices in clinical practice.

Three-dimensional acanthosphere-like hierarchical Co@graphitic carbon for dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction of nitroimidazole

Herein, a magnetic three-dimensional acanthosphere-like hierarchical Co@graphitic carbon (3D Co@GC) is introduced as an efficient adsorbent for extraction of three nitroimidazoles (NMZs: metronidazole (MNZ), ornidazole (ONZ) and tinidazole (TNZ)) from environmental water and food samples. The proposed 3D Co@GC was synthesized by a simple template-free method, which consisted of plentiful freely arranged one-dimensional nanowires. The adsorption properties of 3D Co@GC for three NMZs were investigated systematically by adsorption kinetic and isotherm studies. 3D Co@GC exhibits good adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics toward three NMZs by virtue of its unique hierarchical structure. In addition, it was also found that a bit of methanol can effectively elute the adsorbed NMZs, eliminating the need for other dangerous strong acid or base solutions. Thus, 3D Co@GC as adsorbent to extraction three trace NMZs followed by direct quantification detection of targets with high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet-visible detector (HPLC-UV) was developed. The parameters of dispersed magnetic solid-phase extraction (d-MSPE) were optimized by univariate and multivariate methods (Box-Behnken design). This established method revealed wide linear range and low limits of detection. Furthermore, the satisfactory recoveries of NMZs (86.7-106.7%) were acquired in spiked river water, honey, milk, and muscle samples. This study might provide a potential strategy for the efficient extraction and sensitive analysis of trace NMZs in river water, honey, milk, and muscle samples.

Construction of hydrophilic hypercrosslinked polymer based on natural kaempferol for highly effective extraction of 5-nitroimidazoles in environmental water, honey and fish samples

A series of novel hydroxyl-functional hypercrosslinked polymers (named as HCPs-Kae) were fabricated using natural and environmentally benign kaempferol as monomer via one-step Friedel-Crafts reaction. The prepared HCP-Kae1-24 h exhibited large surface area, good hydrophilicity and excellent adsorption performance to 5-nitroimidazoles (5-NDZs). Thus, by applying HCP-Kae1-24 h as a solid-phase extraction adsorbent, a sensitive method was developed for enrichment of 5-NDZs including metronidazole, ronidazole, secnidazole, dimetridazole and ornidazole prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Under the optimum conditions, good linearities were achieved in the range of 0.10-100.0 ng mL^-1 for water, 1.3-500.0 ng g^-1 for honey, and 1.7-100.0 ng g^-1 for fish meat. The detection limits of the method were 0.03-0.05 ng mL^-1, 0.4-1.0 ng g^-1, 0.5-1.0 ng g^-1 for water, honey and fish meat, respectively. High method recovery was obtained in the range of 84-118% with relative standard deviations lower than 8.9%. The established method was successfully applied to the detection of 5-NDZs in environmental water, honey and fish samples. This work provides a new strategy for constructing hydroxyl-functional HCPs by using natural resource as robust adsorbent for adsorption/extraction applications.

Antimicrobial Resistance in Rivers: A Review of the Genes Detected and New Challenges

River ecosystems are very important parts of the water cycle and an excellent habitat, food, and drinking water source for many organisms, including humans. Antibiotics are emerging contaminants which can enter rivers from various sources. Several antibiotics and their related antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been detected in these ecosystems by various research programs and could constitute a substantial problem. The presence of antibiotics and other resistance cofactors can boost the development of ARGs in the chromosomes or mobile genetic elements of natural bacteria in rivers. The ARGs in environmental bacteria can also be transferred to clinically important pathogens. However, antibiotics and their resistance genes are both not currently monitored by national or international authorities responsible for controlling the quality of water bodies. For example, they are not included in the contaminant list in the European Water Framework Directive or in the US list of Water-Quality Benchmarks for Contaminants. Although ARGs are naturally present in the environment, very few studies have focused on non-impacted rivers to assess the background ARG levels in rivers, which could provide some useful indications for future environmental regulation and legislation. The present study reviews the antibiotics and associated ARGs most commonly measured and detected in rivers, including the primary analysis tools used for their assessment. In addition, other factors that could enhance antibiotic resistance, such as the effects of chemical mixtures, the effects of climate change, and the potential effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, are discussed. Metal-Organic Framework-Based Composites for the Detection and Monitoring of Pharmaceutical Compounds in Biological and Environmental Matrices

The production of synthetic drugs is considered a huge milestone in the healthcare sector, transforming the overall health, aging, and lifestyle of the general population. Due to the surge in production and consumption, pharmaceutical drugs have emerged as potential environmental pollutants that are toxic with low biodegradability. Traditional chromatographic techniques in practice are time-consuming and expensive, despite good precision. Alternatively, electroanalytical techniques are recently identified to be selective, rapid, sensitive, and easier for drug detection. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are known for their intrinsic porous nature, high surface area, and diversity in structural design that provides credible drug-sensing capacities. Long-term reusability and maintaining chemo-structural integrity are major challenges that are countered by ligand-metal combinations, optimization of synthetic conditions, functionalization, and direct MOFs growth over the electrode surface. Moreover, chemical instability and lower conductivities limited the mass commercialization of MOF-based materials in the fields of biosensing, imaging, drug release, therapeutics, and clinical diagnostics. This review is dedicated to analyzing the various combinations of MOFs used for electrochemical detection of pharmaceutical drugs, comprising antibiotics, analgesics, anticancer, antituberculosis, and veterinary drugs. Furthermore, the relationship between the composition, morphology and structural properties of MOFs with their detection capabilities for each drug species is elucidated.
