Binding of heavy metals by algal biosorbents. Theoretical models of kinetics, equilibria and thermodynamics

Physicochemical, structural and functional properties of low methoxyl pectin‑iron (III) complex and its effect on rats with iron deficiency anemia

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional disease worldwide. In this study, a low methoxyl pectin (LMP)‑iron(III) complex was prepared. The physicochemical and structural properties were characterized by HPSEC, HPIC, CV, FTIR, 1H NMR, XRD, SEM and CD. The results showed that iron increased the molecular weight of the LMP‑iron(III) from 11.50 ± 0.32 to 12.70 ± 0.45 kDa and improved its crystallinity. Moreover, the findings demonstrated that -OH and -COOH groups in LMP coordinate with Fe3+ to form β-FeOOH. The water-holding capacity, emulsion stability, and antioxidant activities of the LMP‑iron(III) were lower than those of LMP. Furthermore, the therapeutic effects of LMP‑iron(III) on IDA were investigated in rats. Following LMP‑iron(III) supplementation, compared with the model group, the administration of LMP‑iron(III) significantly increased the body weight, hemoglobin concentration, and serum iron concentration as well as decreased free erythrocyte protoporphyrin concentration. Therefore, the LMP‑iron(III) can potentially treat IDA in rats experiments, providing a theoretical basis for the development of a promising iron supplement.

Dynamic removal of Pb(II) by live Dunaliella salina: a competitive uptake and isotherm model study

The main aim of this study is modeling of a continuous biosorption system for the removal of Pb(II) ions in the aqueous conditions using live Dunaliella salina microalgae. The live microalgae can grow in saline water and opens new opportunities in varying the amount and properties of biosorbent. The effects of five parameters, including pH, optical density of algae as a factor indicating the adsorbent dosage, injection time, contact time, and initial concentration of Pb(II), were optimized by means of response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD). Dunaliella salina algae showed maximum Pb(II) biosorption with 96% efficiency. For the selective Pb(II) uptake in the presence of Cd(II) and Ni(II), binary and ternary systems of ions were chosen. The mutual effect of each heavy metal ion in all systems on the total uptake percentage was also examined. The ion selectivity was investigated in the presence of diverse heavy metal ions, and the Pb(II) uptake percentage was determined to be 80%. Both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were suitable for describing multicomponent binary and ternary systems depending on the presence of competitive ions in the mixture. Main functional groups and surface properties of the Dunaliella salina were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectrometry. Hence, effective heavy metal ion uptake, simple design, and cost-effective cultivation confirmed live Dunaliella salina as suitable microalgae for purifying contaminated water in an economic and safe manner.

Bioadsorption of Fe (II) ions from aqueous solution using Sargassum latifolium aqueous extract and its synthesized silver nanoparticles

Algal extracts are used in the environmentally safe and economically advantageous biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles, which does not require the use of hazardous chemicals, high temperatures, pressures, or energies. In the current study, we created silver nanoparticles from the extract of the marine brown alga Sargassum latifolium, analyzed them with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), FTIR, and UV-visible spectrophotometers, and used them to show how well they could remove Fe (II) ions from aqueous solutions. UV scan analyses of S. latifolium aqueous extract of silver nanoparticles showed a maximum peak at 450 nm. This peak is considered a characteristic peak for silver nanoparticles. Also, FTIR analysis of S. latifolium aqueous extract revealed various functional groups such as - OH, -NH, -CH, -COOH, CO, and C-C, which are responsible for bioadsorption of Fe (II). TEM also demonstrated that the synthesized nanoparticles were spherical, distinct, and regular, with particles size about 6.03-15.16 nm. S. latifolium aqueous extract silver nanoparticles were more effective than its aqueous extract in removing Fe (II) from an aqueous solution. The removal efficiency of Fe (II) by nanoparticles was 83%, while by the aqueous extract was 69%. The optimal conditions for bioadsorption of Fe (II) were pH 4, contact time 150, and adsorbent dose 0.01 g.

Eco-biochemical responses, phytoremediation potential and molecular genetic analysis of Alhagi maurorum grown in metal-contaminated soils

BACKGROUND

Alhagi maurorum Medik. (camelthorn) is a dominant desert plant indigenous in various habitats, including the Western Desert of Egypt. The plant is especially prevalent in and around economic iron ore deposits. Nutrient and heavy metal levels in A. maurorum tissues and soil samples were assessed to identify associations between heavy metal levels in plants and soil. The objective was to evaluate this species as an indicator of heavy metal pollution. Photosynthetic pigments, protein, proline, alkaloids, flavonoids, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazylscavenging, reduced glutathione, malondialdehyde, antioxidant enzymes, and stress-related gene expression were assessed to determine their functional roles in metal stress adaptation in ultra- and molecular structure. Additionally, the molecular genetic variation in A. maurorum samples was assessed using co-dominant sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and inter simple sequence repeats (ISSR).

RESULTS

A substantial difference in enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants of A. maurorum was observed in samples collected from three sites. A. maurorum is suited to the climate in mineralized regions. Morphologically, the stem shows spines, narrow leaves, and a reduced shoot system. Anatomically, modifications included a cuticle coating on leaves and stems, sunken stomata, a compact epidermis, and a thick cortex. Significant anatomical-physiological differences were observed with varying heavy metal soil content, antioxidative enzyme activities increased as a tolerance strategy, and glutathione levels decreased in response to heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metal accumulation also affected the expression of stress-related genes. The highest levels of expression of GST, G6PDH, 6PGD, nitrate reductase 1, and sulfate transporter genes were found in plants collected from site A1. However, auxin-induced protein exhibited its highest expression in plants collected from A2. Six SRAP combinations yielded 25 scoreable markers with a polymorphism rate of 64%, and 5 ISSR markers produced 11 bands with a polymorphism rate of 36.36% for three A. maurorum genotypes. The ME1xEM7 primer combinations provided the most polymorphic information content and resolving power, making it the most useful primer for differentiating A. maurorum genotypes. SRAP markers exhibited a higher diversity index (0.24) than ISSR markers (0.16).

CONCLUSIONS

A. maurorum displayed adaptive characteristics for heavy metal sequestration from mining site soils and is proposed as a strong candidate for phytoremediation.

Comparison of green bio-based cerium/alginate vs. copper/alginate beads: a study of vibrational and thermal properties using experimental and theoretical methods

Herein, bio-based alginates (Alg) containing metallic beads (Ce and Cu) were synthesized via an alginate cross-linking method, and their properties were studied using experimental techniques combined with theoretical simulations. Materials were characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, to determine the cross-linking structural features, thermal stability, and surface morphology of alginates. Besides, density functional theory (DFT) methods were employed to calculate global reactivity parameters such as HOMO-LUMO gap energies (ΔE_H-L), electronegativity (χ), hardness (η), and electrophilic and nucleophilic indicators, using both gas and aqueous media for the study of the complexation process. Among other features, characterization of the thermal properties showed that Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu alginate beads behave differently as a function of the temperature. This behavior was also predicted by the conformation energy differences between Alg@Ce and Alg@Cu, which were found out theoretically and explained with the combined study of the vibrational modes between the carboxylate group with either Ce or Cu. Overall, the reactivity of the Alg@Ce alginate bead was higher than that of the Alg@Cu counterpart, results could be used as a cornerstone to employed the materials here studied in a wide range of applications.

Kinetics of low radioactive wastewater imbibition and radionuclides sorption in partially saturated ternary-binder mortar

This study seeks to assess the imbibition kinetics of low radioactive wastewater (from the DayaBay nuclear power plant) into a partially saturated ternary-binder mortar, as well as the sorption kinetics of ⁶⁰Co and ¹³⁷Cs from the water. Mortar samples with the initial saturation degrees of 0, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 were prepared for the wastewater treatment. Pore structure of the mortar was characterized using water vapor sorption isotherm and mercury intrusion porosimetry tests interpreted by the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer isothermal equilibrium, and volume- and energy-based fractal models. Results show that the mortar has consistent fractal pore structure between the models, and the liquid imbibitions follow the fractal imbibition kinetics, in which the parameters are non-linearly impacted by the initial saturation degrees. The sorption rate and retention capacity of ¹³⁷Cs are much lower than those of ⁶⁰Co, and both follow the Brouers-Sotolongo fractional kinetics. The findings uncover the complex liquid imbibition and radionuclides sorption kinetics in cement-based porous materials, and the in-situ data would contribute to the material designs and sorption controls for large scale in-situ treatments of wastewater from nuclear power plant.

Mechanistic insights into soil heavy metals desorption by biodegradable polyelectrolyte under electric field

In this study, we firstly used alginate to enhance an electrokinetic technology to remediate soil contaminated with divalent heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺). The mechanisms of alginate-associated migration of metal ions in electric field were confirmed. Alginate resulted in a high electrical current during electrokinetic process, and soil conductivity also increased after remediation. Obvious changes in both electroosmotic flow and soil pH were observed. Moreover, these factors were affected by increasing alginate dosage. The highest Cu (95.82%) and Zn (97.33%) removal efficiencies were obtained by introducing 1 wt% alginate. Alginate can desorb Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions from soil by forming unstable gels, which could be dissociated through electrolysis. However, Pb²⁺ ions did not easily migrate out of the contaminated soil. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show Pb²⁺ ions could form a more stable coordination sphere in metal complexes than Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions. The metal removal efficiency was decreased by increasing alginate dosage at a high level. More alginate could provide more carboxyl ligands for divalent metal ions to stabilize gels, which were difficult to dissociate by electrolysis. In summary, the results indicate it is potential for introducing alginate into an electrokinetic system to remediate Cu- and Zn- contaminated soil.

Effect of Pyrolysis Temperature on Copper Aqueous Removal Capability of Biochar Derived from the Kelp Macrocystis pyrifera

Seaweed biochar is an efficient alternative bioadsorbent for Cu2+ removal due to its low cost and heavy metal removal capacity. Using the slow pyrolysis process, we produced biochars from Macrocystis pyrifera at 300 (BC300), 450 (BC450), and 600 °C (BC600). The physicochemical and structural properties of the biochar samples improved with increasing pyrolysis temperature from 300 to 450 °C, whereas no significant differences were observed with further increases in temperature to 600 °C. The yield ranged between 49% and 62% and had a high ash content (57.5–71.1%). BC450 and BC600 presented the highest surface areas and higher porosities. The FTIR spectra indicated that an increase of temperature decreased the acidic functional groups due to depolymerization and the dehydration processes, increasing the aromatic structures and the presence of calcium carbonate. The fittings of the kinetic models were different for the BCs: for the BC450 and BC600 samples, the Cu2+ adsorption was well-represented by a pseudo-first-order model; for BC300, a better fit was obtained with the pseudo-second-order model. The rate-limiting step of Cu2+ adsorption on BCs was represented by both models, liquid film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion, with surface diffusion being more important in BC300 and BC600, and intraparticle diffusion in BC450, in agreement with the pore size of the biochar samples. The adsorption isotherms of all BCs showed Langmuir behavior, representative of a chemisorption process, which was corroborated by the energy adsorption values determined by the D–R model. The maximum monolayer Cu2+ adsorption capacities were 93.55 and 58.0 mg g−1 for BC600 and BC450, respectively, whereas BC450 presented the highest affinity. Other mechanisms involved in controlling heavy metal removal from aqueous suspensions using these seaweed biochars remain to be explored. We conclude that BC450 and BC600 from M. pyrifera are the most efficient adsorbents for Cu2+ aqueous removal and are thus an appropriate alternative for bioremediation.

Spirulina platensis ameliorates arsenic-mediated uterine damage and ovarian steroidogenic disorder

Novel, non-invasive, painless oral therapeutic agents are needed to replace the painful conventional treatment of arsenic-associated health hazards with metal chelators. Our aim was to examine the effect of spirulina ( Spirulina platensis ( Geitler, 1925 )) on arsenic-mediated uterine toxicity. Female Wistar rats were divided equally into four experimental treatment groups: control group, sodium arsenite group (1.0 mg/100 g body mass), spirulina placebo group (20 mg/100 g body mass), and sodium arsenite + spirulina group. In contrast with the control group, spectrophotometric and electrozymographic evaluation revealed that rats that ingested arsenic for 8 d showed significant diminution of the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase ( p < 0.001). Mutagenic uterine DNA breakage and tissue damage were prominent following arsenic consumption by the rats. Oral delivery of spirulina resulted in a significant amelioration of arsenic-induced adverse oxidative stress and genotoxic state of rats. A significant low-signaling ( p < 0.001) of gonadotropins and estradiol was also noted in the arsenic-treated rats, which was terminated by spirulina; this arsenic-primed adverse effect was significant ( p < 0.05, p < 0.01). The spirulina treatment mechanism could be associated with augmentation of the antioxidant defense system that protects the arsenic-mediated pathological state of the uterus.

Solid-phase extraction using octadecyl-bonded silica modified with photosynthetic pigments from Spinacia oleracea L. for the preconcentration of lead(II) ions from aqueous samples

Spinacia oleracea L. extract was immobilized on an octadecyl-bonded silica surface to produce a new sorbent for the solid-phase extraction of trace amounts of metal ions from aqueous neutral samples. A measurement of the metal content has been performed by using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. The affinity of the investigated bivalent metal cations for the modified sorbent are in the order: Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Ni(II) > Zn(II) ≈ Cd(II) ≈ Co(II). The quantum-chemically calculated chlorophyll-a-metal ion binding energies were consistent with the measured affinities of the corresponding metal ions to the investigated sorbent. The maximum sorption capacity obtained for Pb(II) was equal to 1.44 μmol/g. The value of lead uptake was significantly higher in comparison to the one reported for other sorbents and biosorbents. Immobilized chlorophyll a is responsible for a chelation process with stoichiometry 1:1 owing to the porphyrin rings, which was confirmed by the quantitative analysis performed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The Toth adsorption isotherm model was applicable to the description of the adsorption process of either chlorophyll a or Pb(II). The structural analysis of sorbent was done using Fourier-transform Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive X-ray detector.

The removal of mercury ion pollution by using Fe3O4-nanocellulose: Synthesis, characterizations and DFT studies

In this study, we have attempted to extract cellulose from Cystoseria myricaas algae. Nanocellulose, Fe₃O₄ and Fe3O4-nanocellulose compounds are synthesized by acid hydrolysis and co-precipitation as well as sol-gel methods The synthesized compounds are characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, particle size distribution (PSD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The Hg (II) uptake on Fe3O4-nanocellulose is investigated by 14 isotherm models, 12 kinetic models, adsorption activation energy as well as thermodynamic of adsorption. The polymers of algae and the interactions between Hg (II) and cellulose are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) in various conditions. The results of both simulations show a good agreement with experimental data.

Ionic Strength Differentially Affects the Bioavailability of Neutral and Negatively Charged Inorganic Hg Complexes

Mercury (Hg) bioavailability to bacteria in marine systems is the first step toward its bioamplification in food webs. These systems exhibit high salinity and ionic strength that will both alter Hg speciation and properties of the bacteria cell walls. The role of Hg speciation on Hg bioavailability in marine systems has not been teased apart from that of ionic strength on cell wall properties, however. We developed and optimized a whole-cell Hg bioreporter capable of functioning under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and exhibiting no physiological limitations of signal production to changes in ionic strength. We show that ionic strength controls the bioavailability of Hg species, regardless of their charge, possibly by altering properties of the bacterial cell wall. The unexpected anaerobic bioavailability of negatively charged halocomplexes may help explain Hg methylation in marine systems such as the oxygen-deficient zone in the oceanic water column, sea ice or polar snow.

Players over the Surface: Unraveling the Role of Exopolysaccharides in Zinc Biosorption by Fluorescent Pseudomonas Strain Psd

Fluorescent Pseudomonas strain Psd is a soil isolate, possessing multiple plant growth promoting (PGP) properties and biocontrol potential. In addition, the strain also possesses high Zn²⁺ biosorption capability. In this study, we have investigated the role exopolysaccharides (EPS) play in Zn²⁺ biosorption. We have identified that alginates are the prime components contributing to Zn²⁺ biosorption. Deletion of the alg8 gene, which codes for a sub-unit of alginate polymerase, led to a significant reduction in EPS production by the organism. We have also demonstrated that the increased alginate production in response to Zn²⁺ exposure leads to improved biofilm formation by the strain. In the alg8 deletion mutant, however, biofilm formation was severely compromised. Further, we have studied the functional implications of Zn²⁺ biosorption by Pseudomonas strain Psd by demonstrating the effect on the PGP and biocontrol potential of the strain.

Pb(II) adsorption by a novel activated carbon - alginate composite material. A kinetic and equilibrium study

The adsorption capacity of an activated carbon - calcium alginate composite material (ACAA-Ca) has been tested with the aim of developing a new and more efficient adsorbent material to remove Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH=5, in NaCl medium and in the ionic strength range 0.1-0.75molL^-1. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP-ASV) technique was used to check the amount of Pb(II) ion removed during kinetic and equilibrium experiments. Different kinetic (pseudo first order, pseudo second order and Vermuelen) and equilibrium (Langmuir and Freundlich) models were used to fit experimental data, and were statistically compared. Calcium alginate (AA-Ca) improves the adsorption capacity (q_m) of active carbon (AC) in the ACAA-Ca adsorbent material (e.g., q_m=15.7 and 10.5mgg^-1 at I=0.25molL^-1, for ACAA-Ca and AC, respectively). SEM-EDX and thermogravimetric (TGA) measurements were carried out in order to characterize the composite material. The results of the speciation study on the Pb(II) solution and of the characterization of the ACAA-Ca and of the pristine AA-Ca and AC were evaluated in order to explain the specific contribution of AC and AA-Ca to the adsorption of the metal ion.

Antioxidant Potential of Spirulina platensis Mitigates Oxidative Stress and Reprotoxicity Induced by Sodium Arsenite in Male Rats

The present study aimed to examine the protective role of Spirulina platensis (S. platensis) against arsenic-induced testicular oxidative damage in rats. Arsenic (in the form of NaAsO₂ at a dose of 6.3 mg/kg body weight for 8 weeks) caused a significant accumulation of arsenic in testicular tissues as well as a decrease in the levels of testicular superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione, and zinc. Moreover, it significantly decreased plasma testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), triiodothyronine (T₃), and thyroxine (T₄) levels and reduced sperm motility and sperm count. Arsenic (AS) led to a significant increase in testicular malondialdehyde (MDA), tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), nitric oxide (NO), and sperm abnormalities. S. platensis at a dose of 300 mg/kg was found to attenuate As-induced oxidative stress, testicular damage, and sperm abnormalities by its potent antioxidant activity. S. platensis may represent a potential therapeutic option to protect the testicular tissue from arsenic intoxication.

Binding of bivalent metal cations by α-l-guluronate: insights from the DFT-MD simulations

Theoretically calculated free energy profiles give insight into the molecular aspects of metal ion binding by uronate biopolymers.

Porous geopolymeric spheres for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution: synthesis and evaluation

Porous geopolymeric spheres were synthetized by a suspension and solidification method, which were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solution. The influences of pH, geopolymeric spheres dosage, contact time, and initial Cu(II) concentration on adsorption capacity were investigated in detail. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms were fitted well by a pseudo-second-order model and a Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cu(II) by the spheres calculated from Langmuir isotherm model was 52.63 mg/g. The porous geopolymeric spheres showed higher adsorption capacity than the commercial spherical 4A molecular sieve and some other reported spherical materials. The continuous removal of Cu(II) from an effluent was also conducted in column mode. The results confirmed that porous geopolymeric spheres could be used for the cleanup of heavy metal ions from wastewater in a continuous column process.

Porphyrin-based electrostatically self-assembled multilayers as fluorescent probes for mercury(ii) ions: a study of the adsorption kinetics of metal ions on ultrathin films for sensing applications

ESAM as fluorescent probes for Hg(ii) ions were developed. The adsorption process involved in analyte-solid probe interaction was studied by monitoring fluorescence quenching.

The sequential application of macroalgal biosorbents for the bioremediation of a complex industrial effluent

Fe-treated biochar and raw biochar produced from macroalgae are effective biosorbents of metalloids and metals, respectively. However, the treatment of complex effluents that contain both metalloid and metal contaminants presents a challenging scenario. We test a multiple-biosorbent approach to bioremediation using Fe-biochar and biochar to remediate both metalloids and metals from the effluent from a coal-fired power station. First, a model was derived from published data for this effluent to predict the biosorption of 21 elements by Fe-biochar and biochar. The modelled outputs were then used to design biosorption experiments using Fe-biochar and biochar, both simultaneously and in sequence, to treat effluent containing multiple contaminants in excess of water quality criteria. The waste water was produced during ash disposal at an Australian coal-fired power station. The application of Fe-biochar and biochar, either simultaneously or sequentially, resulted in a more comprehensive remediation of metalloids and metals compared to either biosorbent used individually. The most effective treatment was the sequential use of Fe-biochar to remove metalloids from the waste water, followed by biochar to remove metals. Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn were reduced to the lowest concentration following the sequential application of the two biosorbents, and their final concentrations were predicted by the model. Overall, 17 of the 21 elements measured were remediated to, or below, the concentrations that were predicted by the model. Both metalloids and metals can be remediated from complex effluent using biosorbents with different characteristics but derived from a single feedstock. Furthermore, the extent of remediation can be predicted for similar effluents using additive models.

Biosorption of Nickel Ions by Modified Chitosan from Aqueous Solutions

Since commercial chitosan powder may dissolve in water to some degree and demands to be modified chemically to create its own exclusive pore canal we have synthetized two different modified chitosan beads in this investigation by using glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent, significantly, novel porogen silica sol and methanol, and analysis means SEM, FTIR and BET demonstrated that the surface area and pore size improved signally. Moreover, the adsorption conditions pH and ionic strength have been considered, and the maximum adsorption capacity of nickel ions was 32.40 mg/g at the optimum condition. Furthermore, the main model equations on isotherm and kinetics have been deliberated and the results clearly revealed that Freundlich, external mass transfer, intra particle diffusion and pseudo second order model fitted better to the experimental data (R2> 0.99, all). It is expected that this results would be serviceable to remove metals from wastewater using chitosan and its derivatives.
