Use of aminoprophyl silica-immobilized humic acid for Cu(II) ions removal from aqueous solution by using a continuously monitored solid phase extraction technique in a column arrangement

Preparation of entrapment-based microcolumns for analysis of drug-humic acid interactions by high-performance affinity chromatography

Reversible interactions between drugs and humic acid in water can be an important factor in determining the bioavailability and effects of these pharmaceuticals as micropollutants in the environment. In this study, microcolumns containing entrapped humic acid were used in high-performance affinity chromatography (HPAC) to examine the binding of this agent with the drugs tetracycline, carbamazepine, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin. Parameters that were varied to optimize the entrapment of humic acid within HPLC-grade porous silica included the starting concentration of humic acid, the mass ratio of humic acid vs silica, and the method of mixing the reagents with the support for the entrapment process. The highest retention for the tested drugs was obtained when using supports that were prepared using an initial humic acid concentration of 80 mg mL^-1 and a humic acid vs silica mass ratio of 600 mg per g silica, along with preincubation of the humic acid with hydrazide-activated silica before the addition of a capping agent (i.e., oxidized glycogen). Characterization of the humic acid support was also carried out by means of TGA, FTIR, SEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The binding constants measured by HPAC for the given drugs with entrapped Aldrich humic acid gave good agreement with values reported in the literature under similar pH and temperature conditions for this and other forms of humic acid. Besides providing valuable data on the binding strength of various drugs with humic acid, this work illustrates how HPAC may be used as an analytical tool for screening and characterizing the interactions of drugs and man-made contaminants with humic acid or related binding agents in water and the environment.

Extractive and oxidative removal of copper bound to humic acid in soil

Copper (Cu) is often found strongly bound to natural organic matter (NOM) in soil through the formation of strong Cu-NOM complexes. Therefore, in order to successfully remediate Cu-contaminated soils, effective removal of Cu bound to soil organic matter should be considered. In this study, we investigated soil washing methods for Cu removal from a synthetic Cu-contaminated model silica soil coated with humic acid (HA) and from field contaminated soil. Various reagents were studied to extract Cu bound to NOM, which included oxidant (H2O2), base (NaOH), and chelating agents (citric acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)). Among the wash reagents, EDTA extracted Cu most effectively since EDTA formed very strong complexes with Cu, and Cu-HA complexes were transformed into Cu-EDTA complexes. NaOH extracted slightly less Cu compared to EDTA. HA was effectively extracted from the model soil under strongly alkaline conditions with NaOH, which seemed to concurrently release Cu bound to HA. However, chemical oxidation with H2O2 was not effective at destroying Cu-HA complexes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis revealed that chelating agents such as citrate and EDTA were adsorbed onto the model soil via possible complexation between HA and extraction agents. The extraction of Cu from a field contaminated soil sample was effective with chelating agents, while oxidative removal with H2O2 and extractive removal with NaOH separated negligible amounts of Cu from the soil. Based on these results, Cu bound to organic matter in soil could be effectively removed by chelating agents, although remnant agents may remain in the soil.

Compost and crude humic substances produced from selected wastes and their effects on Zea mays L. nutrient uptake and growth

Production of agriculture and timber commodities leads generation of enormous quantity of wastes. Improper disposal of these agroindustrial wastes pollutes the environment. This problem could be reduced by adding value to them. Therefore, a study was carried out to analyse and compare the nutrients content of RS, RH, SD, and EFB of composts and crude humic substances; furthermore, their effect on growth, dry matter production, and nutrient uptake for Zea mays L., and selected soil chemical properties were evaluated. Standard procedures were used to analyze humic acids (HA), crude fulvic acids (CFA), crude humin (CH), soil, dry matter production and nutrient uptake. Sawdust and RS compost matured at 42 and 47 days, respectively, while RH and EFB composts were less matured at 49th day of composting. Rice straw compost had higher ash, N, P, CEC, HA, K, and Fe contents with lower organic matter, total organic carbon, and C/N and C/P ratios. The HA of sawdust compost showed higher carbon, carboxylic, K, and Ca contents compared to those of RS, RH, and EFB. Crude FA of RS compost showed highest pH, total K, Ca, Mg, and Na contents. Crude humin from RS compost had higher contents of ash, N, P, and CEC. Rice straw was superior in compost, CFA, and CH, while sawdust compost was superior in HA. Application of sawdust compost significantly increased maize plants' diameter, height, dry matter production, N, P, and cations uptake. It also reduced N, P, and K based chemical fertilizer use by 90%. Application of CH and the composts evaluated in this study could be used as an alternative for chemical fertilizers in maize cultivation.

Solid phase extraction and preconcentration of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) in environmental samples on chemically modified Amberlite XAD-4 with a proper Schiff base

A new chelating resin, Amberlite XAD-4 loaded with N,N-bis(salicylidene)cyclohexanediamine (SCHD), was synthesized and characterized. The resin Amberlite XAD-4-SCHD was used for selective separation, preconcentration, and determination of Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II) ions in water samples by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Effects of pH, concentration, and volume of elution solution; flow rate of elution; and sample solution, sample volume, and interfering ions for the recovery of the analytes were investigated. These metal ions can be desorbed with 0.5-M HNO3 (recovery, 98%-101%). The sorption capacity was found between 1.38×10(-1) and 3.58×10(-1) mmol/g. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed procedure, the certified reference materials, BCR-032 (Moroccan phosphate rock) and BCR-715 (industrial effluent wastewater), were analyzed. The detection limits of the method were found to be 0.11, 1.91, and 0.43 μg/L for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Ni(II), respectively. The method was applied to the extraction and the recovery of copper, lead, and nickel in wastewater and other water samples.
