Metal extraction in water/micelle systems: Complex formation, stripping and recovery of Cd(II)

Advances in micro interfacial phenomena of adsorptive micellar flocculation: Principles and application for water treatment

Among various aqua remediation technologies, separation aims at cleaning pollutants by isolating them despite their destruction; solutes can also be recovered after the process. Adsorptive micellar flocculation (AMF) has been known as an important surfactant-based technique to separate poorly water-soluble hazardous pollutants from aqua media as an efficient and energy-intensive replacement for other surfactant-based techniques, as such AMF should be known. AMF is based on the partitioning of solutes gradient from bulk solution into the nanosized smart anionic surfactant micelle followed by flocculation. However, unlike coagulation/flocculation or adsorption, AMF is not viable for the production of drinking water in water utilities due to the loss of surfactant monomers. Unfortunately, it can be used as a reservoir or for the recycling/recovery of organic pollutants (intermediates) (ions, organics/bioactive, dyes, etc.), even at high concentrations. The performance of AMF depends on various parameters, and this review briefly summarizes the existing researches on different pollutants removal by AMF and material recovery/recycling. This includes operating condition factors (surfactants, flocculants, surfactant-flocculant or surfactant-pollutant concentration ratio, and water conditions chemistry). Because varieties of micro interfacial phenomena other than physical interactions occur in a versatile micellar environment in the AMF process, emphases are given to adsorptive oxidation, micellar catalysis, selectivity. Furthermore, for the first time, this review gives an overview of understanding the state-of-the-art multifunctional nano amphiphile-based AMF that behaves mimetic to aquatic organisms in the process of pollutant removal. The efficiency of AMF, including recycling concentrated solution without noticeable deterioration, as an auxiliary resource/income for the next cycle, signifies economic viability, versatility, and manifold applications in aqua remediation. Significance, ways to achieve enhanced process efficiency, as well as challenges and future opportunities in wastewater treatment, are also highlighted.

Removal of heavy metals from aluminum anodic oxidation wastewaters by membrane filtration

Aluminum manufacturing has been reported as one of the largest industries and wastewater produced from the aluminum industry may cause significant environmental problems due to variable pH, high heavy metal concentration, conductivity, and organic load. The management of this wastewater with a high pollution load is of great importance for practitioners in the aluminum sector. There are hardly any studies available on membrane treatment of wastewater originated from anodic oxidation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the best treatment and reuse alternative for aluminum industry wastewater using membrane filtration. Additionally, the performance of chemical precipitation, which is the existing treatment used in the aluminum facility, was also compared with membrane filtration. Wastewater originated from anodic oxidation coating process of an aluminum profile manufacturing facility in Kayseri (Turkey) was used in the experiments. The characterization of raw wastewater was in very low pH (e.g., 3) with high aluminum concentration and conductivity values. Membrane experiments were carried out with ultrafiltration (PTUF), nanofiltration (NF270), and reverse osmosis (SW30) membranes with MWCO 5000, 200-400, and 100 Da, respectively. For the chemical precipitation experiments, FeCl₃ and FeSO₄ chemicals presented lower removal performances for aluminum and chromium, which were below 35% at ambient wastewater pH ~ 3. The membrane filtration experimental results show that, both NF and RO membranes tested could effectively remove aluminum, total chromium and nickel (>90%) from the aluminum production wastewater. The RO (SW30) membrane showed a slightly higher performance at 20 bar operating pressure in terms of conductivity removal values (90%) than the NF 270 membrane (87%). Although similar removal performances were observed for heavy metals and conductivity by NF270 and SW30, significantly higher fluxes were obtained in NF270 membrane filtration at any pressure that there were more than three times the flux values in SW30 membrane filtration. Due to the lower heavy metal (<65%) and conductivity (<30%) removal performances of UF membrane, it could be evaluated as pretreatment followed by NF filtration to protect and extend NF membrane life. The water treated by both NF and RO could be recycled back into the process to be reused with economic and environmental benefits.

Adsorption of surfactant micelles and Cd2+/Zn2+ in micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration

Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) is a powerful treatment developed to remove heavy metals from wastewater. Efficient removal of Cd(2+)/Zn(2+) from wastewater was performed by MEUF using a polysulfone hollow ultrafiltration membrane, with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as the surfactant. The adsorption of surfactant micelles and Cd(2+)/Zn(2+) in MEUF was studied by changing the surfactant dosage and the Cd(2+)/Zn(2+) concentration in the feed. In addition, kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamic rules were analyzed, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was conducted. It was found that when the Cd(2+)/Zn(2+) feed concentration was 50 mg/L, and the SDS dosage reached 2.15 g/L, the concentration of heavy metal ions in the permeate stabilized at around 1-4 mg/L, and the adsorption of Cd(2+)/Zn(2+) on SDS micelles followed second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm laws. Adsorption is a spontaneous endothermic process in which the adsorption force is principally the attraction of opposite electrical charges.

Complexation of Cu(II) by original tartaric acid-based ligands in nonionic micellar media: thermodynamic study and applications

The complexation of Cu(II) with original alkylamidotartaric acids (C(x)T) is investigated in homogeneous aqueous medium and in the presence of nonionic micelles of Brij 58 (C16EO20), thanks to various analytical techniques such as NMR self-diffusion experiments, CD and UV-vis spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, pHmetry and micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF). First, a complete speciation study proves the formation of dimeric complexes in water and provides their formation constants. Second, a similar study is led in the presence of nonionic micelles. It underlines a modification of the apparent equilibrium constants in micellar medium and demonstrates that the structure of the complexes is slightly modified in the presence of micelles. This thermodynamic and structural study is applied to modelize the evolution of the extraction yields of Cu(II) by the micelles as a function of pH and to identify the complexes extracted in the micelles. The effects of the chain length of the ligand (C3T vs C8T) on the solubilization properties are put into relief and discussed. Anionic species are proved to be more incorporated in the nonionic micelles than the cationic species. The extracting system constituted of octylamidotartaric acid (CsT) solubilized in nonionic micelles of Brij 58 is demonstrated to be very efficient for the extraction of Cu(II) by MEUF, this technique being an interesting green alternative to traditional solvent extraction.
