Preparation and evaluation of adipic acid dihydrazide cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan microspheres for copper ion adsorption

Adsorption properties of methylene blue and Cu(II) on magnetically oxidized tannic acid cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan gels

In this work, tannic acid was selected as a green cross-linking agent to cross-link carboxymethyl chitosan to prepare a magnetic adsorbent (CC-OTA@Fe3O4), which was used to remove methylene blue (MB) and Cu2+. CC-OTA@Fe3O4 was characterized by FTIR, 13C NMR, XRD, VSM, TGA, BET and SEM. The adsorption behavior was studied using various parameters such as pH value, contact time, initial concentration of MB and Cu2+, and temperature. The results showed that adsorption of MB and Cu2+ followed the pseudo-second-order model and the Sips model. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 560.92 and 104.25 mg/g MB and Cu2+ at 298 K, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. According to the results of FTIR and XPS analyses, the electrostatic interaction was accompanied by π-π interaction and hydrogen bonding for MB adsorption, while complexation and electrostatic interaction were the predominant mechanism for Cu2+ adsorption. Furthermore, CC-OTA@Fe3O4 displayed remarkable stability in 0.1 M HNO3, exhibited promising recyclability, and could be easily separated from aqueous solutions in the magnetic field. This study demonstrates the potential of CC-OTA@Fe3O4 as an adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes and heavy metals from wastewater.

Quantification and visual inspection of adipic dihydrazide in textile using a xanthylium-based ratiometric fluorescent probe

Residual adipic dihydrazide (ADH) in textiles may react with formaldehyde to form hydrazone, which is a source of the formaldehyde pollutant indoors. In this paper, a xanthylium-based ratiometric fluorescent probe SH-Py was developed for ADH detection. The emission of SH-Py at 680 nm decreased, whereas that at 463 nm increased upon the addition of ADH in pure DMSO. The LOD was as low as 24.5 nM, and the possible sensing mechanism is presented. Good recoveries were observed in the standard recovery experiments of SH-Py for ADH detection in textiles. Moreover, the visualization of ADH in textiles was successfully achieved by spraying the probe solution and then inspecting it under a UV lamp. Additionally, SH-Py has the potential to quantify other aliphatic hydrazides in various samples.

Development, characterization and functional properties of sodium alginate-based films incorporated with Schisandra chinensis extract-natamycin complex

Because of the impact of petroleum-based polymers on environmental deterioration and the need for safe, efficient, and functional packaging films, a sodium alginate (SA)-based film incorporating a Schisandra chinensis extract (SCE)-natamycin (NA) complex was developed for the desired physical and functional properties. The incorporation of SCE-NA into SA-based films decreased the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), moisture content (MC), and hydrophilicity of the films and improved their opacity, elongation at break (EAB), and thermal stability. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses showed that SA, SCE, and NA had positive interactions and compatibility. In addition, the antimicrobial activity analysis indicated that the SA-SCE-NA film-forming solutions had satisfactory antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Aspergillus niger. SA-based composite films have been used to coat cucumbers and blueberries to extend their shelf life. Compared to the neat SA film, the shelf life of cucumbers treated with the SA-SCE-NA film increased by 6 days compared to that in the untreated group at 28 °C, and the shelf life of blueberries increased by 5 days at 4 °C, revealing its potential utilization in food packaging.

Injectable multifunctional carboxymethyl chitosan/hyaluronic acid hydrogel for drug delivery systems

Injectable hydrogels with notable mechanical properties and self-healing ability are promising carriers for use as a drug delivery system. Here, adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) and calcium ions (Ca2+) were introduced into quaternary ammonium carboxymethyl chitosan and aldehyde-modified hyaluronic acid hydrogels (QCS + OHA). The hydrogels were synthesized through the interaction of the Schiff bases (imine bonds, acylhydrazone bonds) and coordination bonds via a facile one-step approach. The gelation time (∼54 s) ensured excellent injectability. The QCS + OHA + ADH + Ca2+ hydrogel had notable mechanical properties (compressive stress up to 896.30 KPa), good self-healing ability (up to 94 %), good pH responsiveness, and excellent antibacterial properties. In addition, the QCS + OHA + ADH + Ca2+ hydrogel had a high drug loading capacity (121.3 mg/g) and sustained drug release behaviour (≥120 h). The results of cytotoxicity tests showed a high cell proliferation rate (up to 98 %) and good cytocompatibility. In summary, this work presents an injectable and self-healing pH-responsive hydrogel that can be used as a carrier for drug delivery systems.

Adsorption of tetracycline by Nicandra physaloides (L.) Gaertn seed gum and Nicandra physaloides(L.) Gaertn seed gum/Carboxymethyl chitosan aerogel

In this study, novel aerogels of Nicandra physaloides (L.) Gaertn seed gum (NPG) and Nicandra physaloides (L.) Gaertn seed gum/Carboxymethyl chitosan (NPG/CMC) were prepared by freeze-drying method for removing tetracycline (TC) from water. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) were used to characterize structure and morphology of NPG and NPG/CMC aerogels. The average pore diameter of NPG and NPG/CMC were 3.04 and 1.2 nm, the specific surface areas were 2.67 and 0.73 m²/g, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of NPG and NPG/CMC aerogels for TC based on Langmuir isotherm was 266.7 and 332.23 mg/g respectively. Through thermodynamic and kinetic studies, it was found that the adsorption processes of the two adsorbents were spontaneous and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. And the process of NPG adsorption of TC was endothermic, while NPG/CMC was exothermic.

Hyaluronic Acid Derivative Molecular Weight-Dependent Synthesis and Antimicrobial Effect of Hybrid Silver Nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) appeared as promising antimicrobial candidates to face the development of antibiotic resistance. Although reported as toxic towards mammalian cells, their combination with biomolecules have shown reduced toxicity, while maintaining the antimicrobial function. Herein, hyaluronic acid (HA) with low (40 kDa), medium (200 and 600 kDa) and high (2 MDa) molecular weight (Mw) was modified with adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH) and used as reducing and capping agents to synthesise antimicrobial hybrid Ag NPs. The Mw of the polymer played a crucial role in the morphology, size and antibacterial activity of the Ag NPs. The 600 and 200 kDa HA-ADH-Ag NPs were able to reduce the Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus concentration by more than 3 logs, while the 40 kDa NPs reached ~2 logs reduction. The 2 MDa HA-ADH failed to form homogenous NPs with strong bactericidal activity. A mechanistic study of the interaction with a model bacterial membrane using Langmuir isotherms confirmed the greater interaction between bacteria and higher Mw polymers and the effect of the NP’s morphology. The nanocomposites low toxicity to human skin cells was demonstrated in vitro, showing more than 90% cell viability after incubation with the NPs.

Rapid detection of Salmonella in milk by a nuclear magnetic resonance biosensor based on the streptavidin-biotin system and O-carboxymethyl chitosan target gadolinium probe

Rapid and sensitive detection of foodborne pathogens is of great importance for food safety. Here, a set of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) biosensors based on a O-carboxymethyl chitosan target gadolinium (Gd) probe was developed to quickly detect Salmonella in milk by combining NMR technology and bioimmunotechnology with membrane filtration technology. First, O-carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) was biotinylated to prepare biotinylated O-carboxymethyl chitosan (biotin-O-CMC) through amide reaction, and biotinylated magnetic complexes (biotin-O-CMC-Gd) were obtained by using O-CMC, which has strong chelating adsorption on Gd. The target probe was obtained by combining biotin-O-CMC-Gd with the biotinylated antibody (biotin-antibody) via streptavidin (SA) by introducing the SA-biotin system. Then, Salmonella was captured by the target probe through antigen-antibody interaction. Finally, NMR was used to measure the longitudinal relaxation time (T₁) of the filtrate collected by membrane filtration. This NMR biosensor with good specificity and high efficiency can detect Salmonella with the sensitivity of 1.8 × 10³ cfu/mL within 2 h; in addition, it can realize the detection of complex samples because of its strong anti-interference capability and may open up a new method for rapid detection of Salmonella, which has a great application potential.

Simple ultrasonic-assisted approach to prepare polysaccharide-based aerogel for cell research and histocompatibility study

Salecan, a water-soluble microbial polysaccharide with attractive biocompatible characteristics, is very suitable for aerogel fabrication. However, the practical application of salecan-based aerogels for cell culture was limited by complicated preparation method, lack of cell anchorage signals, and the ability to modulate this properly. Here, a smart aerogel was designed by ultrasonic-assisted self-assembly of salecan and cationic starch (CAS) without any organic and toxic crosslinkers. The ultrasound waves generated a marked impact on self-assemble process by means of ultrasonic cavitation. Aerogel network was produced by strong electrostatic attractions between the polysaccharides. Especially, salecan/CAS ratio can be precisely modulated to tailor the hydrophilicity, mechanical stiffness, and morphologic property. The specific surface area of the aerogels gradually increased with the increase in salecan/CAS ratio. These aerogels were non-cytotoxic, and the incorporation of salecan into them promoted cell-matrix interactions by directionally supporting cell adhesion and proliferation. Most strikingly, in vivo experiment revealed that the histological features in the main organs of the mice were similar to those observed in the PBS-treated control group, and no sign of the histopathological abnormality or tissue destruction was observed, indicating the excellent histocompatibility of the aerogels. This study offered a new and powerful avenue to fabricate functional biomaterial.

Construction of Fe3O4/SiO2/chitosan-grafted-poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) magnetic nanocomposite and their application in simultaneous extraction of Trans-resveratrol and its metabolites from rat plasma

A novel magnetic nanocomposite of chitosan-grafted-poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (Fe₃O₄/SiO₂/CHT-g-PNVCL MNC) were synthesized. Chitosan was prepared from shrimp shells Penaeus monodon by a green deacetylation approach. N-vinylcaprolactam was first polymerized on the surface of Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization. Then, the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles modified with carboxyl-terminated- poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) was grafted onto chitosan. Various techniques were used to characterize of physicochemical properties of synthesized nanomaterials. The application of Fe₃O₄/SiO₂/CHT-g-PNVCL MNC was utilized as a novel adsorbent for the simultaneous extraction of trans-resveratrol and its major phase II metabolites from rat plasma. A qualitative analysis was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry. Response surface methodology based on central composite design was used to optimize the extraction procedure including pH, amount of adsorbent, extraction time, desorption time, and volume of elution solvent. The established quantitative method succeeded in satisfying FDA requirements regarding biological analysis methods. The results of the validation of the method indicated its acceptable accuracy (-4.4 to 6.9%), linearity (r > 0.995), precision (CV < 6.3%), and stability. The lower limits of quantification of the proposed method achieved were 1.23-1.68 ngmL^-1for target analytes. The information obtained from the method validation has been used to estimate the expanded uncertainty for the determination of trans-resveratrol in rat plasma samples following orally administered trans-resveratrol. The method was applied to study the pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and bioavailability of trans-resveratrol in healthy rats following a single oral or intravenous dose.

Removal of Sr(II) from water with highly-elastic carboxymethyl chitosan gel

A carboxymethyl chitosan (O-CMC) gel was prepared by crosslinking and functionalizing with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) using a one-pot reaction under mild conditions. Structural characterizations have revealed that the prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel has 3D porous structure with abundant carboxyl groups distributed in the pores. The prepared O-CMC/EDTA gel was used to adsorb Sr(II) ions in water while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to explore the adsorption mechanism. In order to analyze the adsorption process, we performed the adsorption kinetics and isotherms. The results show that the maximum adsorption capacity of O-CMC/EDTA for Sr (II) ions is about 105.81 mg/g at pH = 7. Notably, it exhibited fairly high compression elasticity due to multiple hydrogen bonds in the network. The showed no deformation after 30 continuous compression cycles. The ratio of O-CMC:EDTA significantly influences the adsorption property by affecting the crosslinking degree as well as the number of active sites. The high adsorption capacity, elasticity, and reusability have demonstrated that the prepared material is an effective and promising adsorbent for Sr(II) removal.

Fabrication of methyl acrylate and tetraethylenepentamine grafted magnetic chitosan microparticles for capture of Cd(II) from aqueous solutions

MCS-MA-TEPA microparticles, with 251.22 mg g^-1 of adsorption capacity for Cd(II), higher than most of the counterparts, were first fabricated by chemical coprecipitation, spray drying, and Michael addition reaction, without any cross-linker participation. These Fe₃O₄-nanoparticle-embedded microparticles of 5.95 μm in size, derived from modifications by methyl acrylate (MA) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on magnetic chitosan (MCS) microparticles, were of plum-pudding-like and wrinkle-like topography portrayed by TEM and SEM. Such features were beneficial to adsorbent recycling and Cd(II) capture. BET examinations illustrated 6.084 m² g^-1 of specific surface area, 0.015 mL g^-1 of pore volume, and 6.536 nm of pore diameter. FTIR, VSM, XRD, TEM-SAED, TG, and DTG characterizations were indicative of successful synthesis, satisfactory magnetism, well-defined architecture, and good thermostability. Optimal adsorption parameters for Cd(II) were determined via batch experiments. Thermodynamic parameters and adsorption data fitting implied an exothermic, spontaneous, monolayer, and chemisorption process. XPS analyses confirmed a potential adsorption mechanism that N and O atoms on microparticles chelated with Cd(II) ions in solutions. Additionally, MCS-MA-TEPA-Cd(II) microparticles were magnetically separated easily and had outstanding reusability even after five-time recycling, with a slight adsorption capability loss (< 12%). Altogether, MCS-MA-TEPA microparticles might serve as a promising adsorbent for contaminated water scavenging.

Highly Selective Removal of Pb(II) by a Pyridylpyrazole-β-ketoenol Receptor Covalently Bonded onto the Silica Surface

Efficient materials capable of capturing toxic metals from water are widely needed. Herein, a new pyridylpyrazole-β-ketoenol receptor, X-ray diffraction analyzed, was covalently incorporated into the silica surface to produce solid and recyclable adsorbent particles. The new material, fully characterized, revealed extremely efficient removal of toxic metals from water, with a selectivity order of Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II). The adsorption was exceptionally rapid at optimum pH and concentrations, showing Pb(II) removal of 93 mg g-1 within 5 min and maximum Pb(II) adsorption of 110 mg g-1 after only 20 min. Sorption isotherms agreed well with the Langmuir model suggesting a monolayer adsorption, whereas kinetics agreed with the pseudo-second-order model suggesting a chemisorption binding mechanism. Thermodynamics of adsorption were fitted with an endothermic and spontaneous process. The material, recyclable for at least five cycles, is therefore promising for the cleanup of water polluted by toxic metals, especially lead.

Cryogels of carboxyalkylchitosans as a universal platform for the fabrication of composite materials

Here we report a new simple method for fabrication of supermacroporous beads and monoliths via cross-linking of carboxyalkylated chitosan derivatives with hexamethylene diisocyanate in aqueous solution at subzero temperature. These materials provide high filtration rate and good mass-transfer that in combination with high binding capacity toward metal ions allows their application as a universal platform for fabrication of composite catalysts, sorbents, and metal-affine chromatography stationary phases. Using N-(2-carboxyethyl)chitosan (CEC), we have demonstrated that optimum chitosan carboxylation degree for cryogels synthesis is close to 1.0. Cu(II)-chelated CEC cryogels have shown high efficiency as metal-affinity sorbents for ciprofloxacin recovery. Co(II)-chelated CEC cryogels have been used for fabrication of Co(II) ferrocyanide-containing composite with the distribution coefficient for ¹³⁷Cs of 140,000 ml/g and the adsorption capacity of ˜1 mmol/g. Composite Pd-catalysts supported on CEC cryogel provided tenfold higher reaction rate in 4-nitrophenol reduction in comparison with Pd-catalyst supported on chitosan beads.

Fast removal of Co(ii) from aqueous solution using porous carboxymethyl chitosan beads and its adsorption mechanism

Porous carboxymethyl chitosan (PCMC) beads were synthesized via ionic coacervation/chemical crosslinking, using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a porogen and calcium chloride and glutaraldehyde as physical and chemical cross-linkers. The as-synthesized PCMC beads were characterized using SEM, EDS, BET, TGA, FTIR and XPS analysis and then tested for the removal of Co(ii) from aqueous solution. The effects of the initial pH, Co(ii) concentration and temperature were investigated. It was found that the adsorption equilibrium is reached within 6 h and the maximum adsorption capacity is 46.25 mg g-1. In addition, the kinetics and equilibrium data are well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the desorption and re-adsorption performance was also studied, and the results revealed that the prepared new adsorbent still showed good adsorption performance after five cycles of regeneration. Finally, the adsorption mechanism, including chemical and physical adsorption, was proposed on the basis of the microstructure analysis, adsorption kinetics and isotherm results, and chemical adsorption was found to be the main adsorption mechanism during the process of the removal of Co(ii).

Uptake of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on Chitosan Microsphere Surface Successively Grafted by Methyl Acrylate and Diethylenetriamine

A novel adsorbent, CS-MA-DETA microspheres, for uptake of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions was first fabricated via two-step grafting methyl acrylate (MA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) onto chitosan (CS) microsphere surface in the absence of cross-linkers. CS-MA-DETA microspheres of 3.04 μm in mean diameter were of uniformly wrinkle-like topography sketched out by SEM, whose surface after decoration by MA and DETA was stable and beneficial to metal ion capture. Its chemical composition, microstructure, and thermal property were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, XRD, BET, and TGA techniques, and the achieved quantitative results mainly included C/N ratio (4.76), crystallinity (31.20%, 19.75% of CS), specific surface area (27.806 m² g^-1), pore diameter (3.452 nm), and mass loss at the first stage (3%, around 10% of CS), which indicated a successful synthesis, well-defined structure, and good thermostability. Adsorption tests of CS-MA-DETA microspheres were performed in Pb(II) and/or Cd(II) solution(s) at various pH values, contact time, and initial concentrations, exhibiting an excellent adsorption capability. Its maximum adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir model was 239.2 mg Pb(II)/g, or 201.6 mg Cd(II)/g, which was higher than those of most available CS-based adsorbents. Furthermore, several adsorption kinetic and isotherm models were employed to investigate its uptake behavior, implying that it was mainly a monolayer adsorption and chemisorption process. Five-cycle reusability tests demonstrated CS-MA-DETA microspheres could be repeatedly used without significant capacity loss (<10%). Additionally, several potential bonding modes and adsorption sites for both metal ions were also proposed. Overall, CS-MA-DETA microspheres with outstanding adsorption performance toward Pb(II) and/or Cd(II) might serve as a new absorbent for wastewater purification.

The Adsorption Capacity of GONs/CMC/Fe₃O₄ Magnetic Composite Microspheres and Applications for Purifying Dye Wastewater

Graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/Fe₃O₄ magnetic composite microspheres (MCMs) were prepared by enclosing Fe₃O₄ particles with CMC and GONs in turn. The microstructures of GONs and GONs/CMC/Fe₃O₄ MCMs were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TEM, and SEM. The effects of GON content, pH value, and adsorption time on the adsorption capacity of the MCMs were investigated. The results show that the GONs/CMC/Fe₃O₄ MCMs have a greater specific surface area and a strong adsorption capacity for dye wastewater. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism was investigated, and the results accorded with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The search results indicate that GONs/CMC/Fe₃O₄ MCMs can be used to purify dye wastewater and has an important potential use in the practical purification of dye wastewater.

Comparison of Co(ii) adsorption by a crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel and resin: behaviour and mechanism

This article studies the possible chemical and physical adsorption mechanism for Co(ii) onto the crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan hydrogel and resin.
