Abstract
Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes containing a metal-polyphenol network (MPN)-based selective layer were fabricated on a porous polyacrylonitrile support. The MPN layer was formed through coordination-based self-assembly between plant-based tannic acid (TA) and an Fe3+ ion. For the first time, we demonstrate that TFC membranes containing TA-Fe3+ selective layers can separate small organic solutes in aqueous media from equimolar mixtures of solutes. The effect of the assembly time on the characteristics and performance of the fabricated selective layer was investigated. An increase in the assembly time led to the formation of selective layers with smaller effective pore sizes. The tannic acid-Fe3+ selective layer exhibited a low rejection towards neutral solutes riboflavin and poly(ethylene glycol) while high rejections were observed for anionic dyes of orange II and naphthol green B. Permeation selectivities in the range of 2-27 were achieved between neutral and charged dyes in both single- and mixed-solute experiments, indicating the significant role of Donnan exclusion and the charge-selective nature of the membranes. The rejection efficiency improved with an increasing assembly time. Overall, this study demonstrates that the assembly time is a vital casting parameter for controlling the permeance, rejection and selectivity of thin-film composite membranes with a tannic acid-Fe3+ selective layer.

Abstract
Membrane distillation technology could utilize low-grade heat to desalinate brine, but the membrane material often suffers from disadvantages of low permeation flux and weak robustness to contaminants. To address these issues, the commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane was modified by cost-effective chemicals of tannic acid and (3-Aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) to construct hydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic nano-rough structures on the surface to enhance its flux and oil-fouling resistance in direct contact membrane distillation. The results show that a high underwater oil contact angle of 180° is observed to the membrane surface due to the rough nanostructures functionalized by abundant hydroxyl groups. Despite the additional mass transfer resistance provided by the rough nanostructures, the flux was increased noticeably. This is mainly attributed to the strong interactions between the abundant hydroxyl groups of hydrophilic layer surface and water molecules, leading to a part of free water staying at intermediate transition state (IW). The mass transfer resistance of the hydrophilic layer itself is reduced as a consequence of decreased evaporation enthalpy of water, thereby increasing the flux. Moreover, while the flux of the pristine membrane is reduced by 84.18%, the flux of Janus membrane remains the same when treating mineral oil brine emulsions with oil concentration up to 1500 ppm in comparison with the result for 35 g l-1brine solution, indicating that the Janus membrane is safe from the oil contamination. Our work provides a fine guidance for membrane distillation to treat high oily brine.

Abstract
One of the most dangerous types of pollution to the environment is oily wastewater, which is produced from a number of industrial sources and can cause damage to the environment, people, and creatures. To overcome this issue, membrane technology as an advanced method has been considered for treating oily wastewater due to its stability, high removal efficiency, and simplicity in scaling up. Membrane fouling, or the accumulation of oil droplets at or within the membrane pores, compromises the efficiency of membrane separation and water flux. In the last decade, the fabrication of membranes with specific wettability to reduce fouling has received much consideration. The purpose of this article is to offer a literature overview of all fabricated anti-fouling super(wetting and anti-wetting) membranes for applicable membrane processes for the separation of immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. In this review, we first explain membrane fouling and discuss methods for preventing it. Afterwards, in all membrane separation processes, including pressure-driven, gravity-driven, and thermal-driven, membranes based on the form and density of oil are categorized as oil-removing or water-removing with special wettability, and then their wettability modification with different materials is particularly discussed. Finally, the prospect of anti-fouling membrane fabrication in the future is presented.

Abstract
Poly(caffeic acid) was synthesized and utilized for the extraction and determination of rare earth elements (REEs), thorium, and uranium. Oxidative polymerization of caffeic acid, a low-cost plant-based material, in the presence of ethylenediamine produced a granular, air-stable, and cross-linked polymer. The polymer is highly oxygenated and together with the amino group from ethylenediamine efficiently coordinates and preconcentrates these critical elements from aqueous media. Extraction was dependent on solution pH, amount of sorbent, and extraction time, while the concentration and flow rate of the desorption solution governed the recovery efficiency. Removal and recovery efficiencies greater than 98 and 90%, respectively, and low levels of detection ranging from 0.1 to 2.9 ng/L were achieved. Determination of these strategic elements in the presence of potentially interfering ions as well as in complex matrices such as well water and produced water samples also was demonstrated. The capacity of poly(caffeic acid) was determined with lanthanum as a representative REE to be 161.7 mg/g, establishing the promise of poly(caffeic acid) for larger-scale extractions in addition to the ability to screen sources for the presence of REEs.

Abstract
Metal-polyphenol networks (MPNs) are being used as versatile coatings for regulating membrane surface chemistry and for the formation of thin separation layers. The intrinsic nature of plant polyphenols and their coordination with transition metal ions provide a green synthesis procedure of thin films, which enhance membrane hydrophilicity and fouling resistance. MPNs have been used to fabricate tailorable coating layers for high-performance membranes desirable for a wide range of applications. Here, we present the recent progress of the use of MPNs in membrane materials and processes with a special focus on the important roles of tannic acid-metal ion (TA-Mn+) coordination for thin film formation. This review introduces the most recent advances in the fabrication techniques and the application areas of TA-Mn+ containing membranes. In addition, this paper outlines the latest research progress of the TA-metal ion containing membranes and summarizes the role of MPNs in membrane performance. The impact of fabrication parameters, as well as the stability of the synthesized films, is discussed. Finally, the remaining challenges that the field still faces and potential future opportunities are illustrated.

Abstract
Oil/water mixtures from industrial and domestic wastewater adversely affect the environment and human beings. In this context, the development of a facile and improved separation method is crucial. Herein, dopamine was used as a bioadhesive to bind tea polyphenol (TP) onto the surface of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to form the first hydrophilic polymer network. Sodium periodate (NaIO4) is considered an oxidising agent for triggering self-polymerisation and can be used to introduce hydrophilic groups via surface manipulation to form the second hydrophilic network. In contrast to the individual polydopamine (PDA) and TP/NaIO4 composite coatings for a hydrophobic PVDF microfiltration membrane, a combination of PDA, TP, and NaIO4 has achieved the most facile treatment process for transforming the hydrophobic membrane into the hydrophilic state. The hierarchical superhydrophilic network structure with a simultaneous underwater superoleophobic membrane exhibited excellent performance in separating various oil-in-water emulsions, with a high water flux (1530 L.m-2 h-1.bar) and improved rejection (98%). The water contact angle of the modified membrane was 0° in 1 s. Moreover, the steady polyphenol coating was applied onto the surface, which endowed the membrane with an adequate antifouling and recovery capability and a robust durability against immersion in an acid, alkali, or salt solution. This facile scale-up method depends on in situ plant-inspired chemistry and has remarkable potential for practical applications.

Abstract
Continuous increasing discharge of industrial oily wastewater and frequent occurrence of oil spill accidents have taken heavy tolls on global environment and human health. Organic-inorganic modifications can fabricate superhydrophilic/submerged superoleophobic membranes for efficient oil-water separation/treatment though they still suffer from complex operation, non-environmental friendliness, expensive cost or uneven distribution. Herein, a new strategy regarding tannic acid (TA)-Ti(IV) coating and CaCO3-based biomineralization through simple inkjet printing processes was proposed to modify polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane, endowing the membrane with high hydrophilicity (water contact angle (WCA) decreased from 86.01° to 14.94°) and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater contact angle (UOCA) > 155°). The optimized TA-Ti(IV)-CaCO3 modified membrane possessed perfect water permeation to various oil/water emulsions (e.g., 355.7 L·m-2·h-1 for gasoline emulsion) under gravity with superior separation efficiency (>98.8 %), leading the way in oil/water emulsion separation performance of PVDF membranes modified with polyphenolic surfaces to our knowledge. Moreover, the modified membrane displayed rather high flux recovery after eight cycles of filtration while maintaining the original excellent separation efficiency. The modification process proposed in this study is almost independent of the nature of the substrate, and meets the demand for simple, inexpensive, rapid preparation of highly hydrophilic antifouling membranes, showing abroad application prospect for oil-water emulsion separation/treatment.

Abstract
Tannic acid (TA)-Fe3+ membranes have received recent attention due to their sustainable method of fabrication, high water flux and organic solutes rejection performance. In this paper, we present a description of the transport of aqueous solutions of dyes through these membranes using the transport parameters of the Spiegler-Kedem-Katchalsky (SKK) model. The reflection coefficient (σ) and solute permeability (PS) of the considered TA-Fe3+ membranes were estimated from the non-linear model equations to predict the retention of solutes. The coefficients σ and PS depended on the porous medium and dye molecular size as well as the charge. The simulated rejections were in good agreement with the experimental findings. The model was further validated at low permeate fluxes as well as at various feed concentrations. Discrepancies between the observed and simulated data were observed at low fluxes and diluted feed solutions due to limitations of the SKK model. This work provides insights into the mass transport mechanism of dye solutions and allows the prediction of dye rejection by the TFC membranes containing a TA-Fe3+ selective layer using an SKK model.

Abstract
Nanofiltration contributes to the development of advanced treatment of wastewater. An antifouling mixed matrix recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) membrane modified by the hydrophilic ZnO/y-FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs) was fabricated via the electrospinning method. The effect of ZnO/y-FeOOH NPS embedded in rPET as a modifier on the fabrication of nanocomposite membranes was investigated regarding water flux, membrane morphology, permeability, fouling resistance, and COD removal. The surface morphology of the rPET-ZnO/y-FeOOH membrane was evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), water contact angle (WCA), and porosity and pore structure.Due to the embedding of NPs, the resulting rPET-ZnO/y-FeOOH membrane, with a low WCA of 53.404° angle, conforms significantly improved hydrophilicity and water permeation flux. The FESEM image displayed the distribution of cuboidal and needle-like ZnO and FeOOH NPs on the rPET membrane. The performance of the nanofiltration system related to the removal efficiency of COD was studied. It was deduced that the rPET-ZnO/y-FeOOH membrane had a superior COD removal capability (95.7%) at a pressure of 2 bar. Protein rejection tests were performed on antifouling behavior. The nanocomposite membrane with a high antifouling capability was related to 0.5 wt·% ZnO/y-FeOOH NPs (flux recovery ratio [FRR] = 96.2%, Rr = 90.21%, and Rir = 3.001%). The modification procedure in this study (as a great improving technique) was proposed to fabricate the antifouling nanofiltration membrane.

Abstract
As industrial oily wastewater can seriously damage ecosystems, the use of filtration technology with functional filters has emerged as an effective approach for purifying oily wastewater and protecting the environment. Although several methods for preparing functional filters with specific wettability have been reported, most methods are complicated, expensive, and time-consuming. Furthermore, these methods are only applicable to specific substrates, which hinder their practical applications. Here, a simple and versatile method for the fabrication of a superhydrophilic filter on any substrate using a one-step dipping process is reported. The method is easily scaled-up to fabricate large-area superhydrophilic filters; moreover, mass production is possible using a roll-to-roll process. The resulting filter is durable, stable, and, due to its stable hydrophilic layer, shows no deterioration in wetting behavior; it also exhibits self-cleaning properties. Based on its selective wetting characteristics, oil/water mixtures and oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants can be purified in a highly efficient manner. Importantly, owing to its self-cleaning properties, the filter can be reused after simply immersing and washing in water. This easy, cost-effective, fast, and versatile method for fabricating superhydrophilic filters can be practically applied in industries that need to purify oily water.

Abstract
Today, membrane technologies play a big role in chemical industry, especially in separation engineering. Tannic acid, one of the most famous polyphenols, has attracted widespread interest in membrane society. In the past several years, researches on the applications of tannic acid in membrane technologies have grown rapidly. However, there has been lack of a comprehensive review for now. Here, we summarize the recent developments in this field for the first time. We comb the history of tannic acid and introduce the properties of tannic acid firstly, and then we turn our focus onto the applications of membrane surface modification, interlayers and selective layers construction and mixed matrix membrane development. In those previous works, tannic acid has been demonstrated to be capable of making a great contribution to the membrane science and technology. Especially in membrane surface/interface engineering (such as the construction of superhydrophilic and antifouling surfaces and polymer/nanoparticle interfaces with high compatibility) and development of thin film composite membranes with high permselectivity (such as developing thin film composite membranes with ultrahigh flux and high rejection), tannic acid can play a positive and great role. Despite this, there are still many critical challenges lying ahead. We believe that more exciting progress will be made in addressing these challenges in the future.

Abstract
While polyphenol-based coating has been regarded as a promising alternative to functionalize membrane surface, it usually suffers from problems of low-efficient procedure and low utilization rate of the polyphenolic compounds, hindering its large-scale implementations. To solve these problems, this study provided a first report on inkjet printing of polyphenols (catechol (CA) or tannic acid (TA)) and sodium periodate (SP) on a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane to improve membrane performance. A series of analyses showed the efficient formation of homogenous films on the PVDF membrane surface and the improvement of hydrophilicity by the inkjet printing technique. The PVDF membranes decorated with the optimized polyphenolic coating exhibited a promising oil/water separation efficiency (higher than 99%) with a high average water permeation flux of 5.2 times higher than that of the pristine membrane. Meanwhile, the modified membranes illustrated a good stability under acidic conditions (pH = 2-7). The novel method proposed in this study is facile, cost-saving and environment-friendly. The advantages of the proposed method and the modified membranes demonstrated the great significance of the proposed method in practical applications.

Abstract
Superwetting membranes with opposite wettability to oil and water have drawn intense attention in recent years for oil/water separation. Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes have shown unique advantages in the efficient treatment of oily wastewater containing oil-in-water emulsions. Facile interfacial engineering and microstructural design of the hierarchical architectures and the hydrophilic chemistry is of significance but still challenging. In this study, a hydrophilic hierarchical hybrid layer derived from metal-phenolic network (MPN)/metal-organic framework (MOF) synergy is constructed on the membrane surface via a proposed coordination-directed alternating assembly strategy. The assembly of MPN multilayers provides a hydrophilic chemical basis, and the assembly of MOF nanocrystals provides a hierarchical structural basis. Notably, the coordination interfacial interaction enables the formation of well-defined hydrophilic hierarchical architectures. The obtained membrane is thus endowed with robust superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and anti-oil-adhesion capability, which make it capable of highly efficient oil-water separation with high water permeance (above 6300 L/m2 h), high oil rejection (above 99.4%), and recyclable antifouling property. The high performance of the developed superwetting membrane makes it a competitive candidate for oil/water separation. Additionally, the demonstrated MPN/MOF assembly strategy may offer new prospects for the facile and versatile design of other superwetting materials.

Abstract
Herein, a new hydrophilic and antibacterial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) flat MF membrane was fabricated via a low-cost and simple preparation method in which chitosan (CS) was crosslinked with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) using epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a cross-linker followed by in situ chimeric SiO2 nanoparticle adhesion. The surface of the modified membrane had decreased C and F contents, and a large number of hydrophilic groups appeared. The treated membrane had good hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties. Moreover, the PTFE-modified membrane had high separation efficiency and antifouling property for oil-in-water emulsions. Finally, the hydrophilic stability of the PTFE membrane was studied by subjecting it to continuous water rinsing and soaking in solutions of different pH values. The present study demonstrates that this modified membrane has potential practical applications in industrial wastewater recovery. Herein, a new hydrophilic and antibacterial PTFE flat MF membrane was fabricated via a low-cost and simple preparation method in which CS was crosslinked with PVA using ECH as a cross-linker followed by in situ chimeric SiO2 nanoparticle adhesion.![]()

Abstract
The synthesis of hybrid functional materials using the coordination-driven assembly of metal-phenolic networks (MPNs) is of interest in diverse areas of materials science. To date, MPN assembly has been explored as monoligand systems (i.e., containing a single type of phenolic ligand) where the phenolic components are primarily obtained from natural sources via extraction, isolation, and purification processes. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of MPNs from a readily available, crude phenolic source-green tea (GT) infusions. We employ our recently introduced rust-mediated continuous assembly strategy to prepare these GT MPN systems. The resulting hollow MPN capsules contain multiple phenolic ligands and have a shell thickness that can be controlled through the reaction time. These multiligand MPN systems have different properties compared to the analogous MPN systems reported previously. For example, the Young's modulus (as determined using colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy) of the GT MPN system presented herein is less than half that of MPN systems prepared using tannic acid and iron salt solutions, and the disassembly kinetics are faster (∼50%) than other, comparable MPN systems under identical disassembly conditions. Additionally, the use of rust-mediated assembly enables the formation of stable capsules under conditions where the conventional approach (i.e., using iron salt solutions) results in colloidally unstable dispersions. These differences highlight how the choice of phenolic ligand and its source, as well as the assembly protocol (e.g., using solution-based or solid-state iron sources), can be used to tune the properties of MPNs. The strategy presented herein expands the toolbox of MPN assembly while also providing new insights into the nature and robustness of metal-phenolic interfacial assembly when using solution-based or solid-state metal sources.
