Magnetic Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) Microspheres with Grafted Polypyrrole Chains for the High-Capacity Adsorption of Congo Red Dye from Aqueous Solutions. COATINGS 2022. Abstract
In this study, novel magnetic poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) microspheres with grafted polypyrrole chains (magnetic PGMA-g-PPy) were developed for the high-capacity adsorption of Congo red (CR) from aqueous solutions. The magnetic PGMA-g-PPy was synthesized by the typical dispersion polymerization method and the ring-opening reaction of epoxy groups, producing abundant hydroxyls for the grafting polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of FeCl3 as an oxidizing agent on the surface of the microspheres. The characterization results showed that magnetic PGMA-g-PPy was successfully fabricated. The adsorption equilibrium data of the adsorbents could be well fitted by the Langmuir isotherm model, showing a high maximum adsorption capacity of 502.5 mg/g for CR. The adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with a fast speed. The adsorbents had no leaching of Fe in the solution at pH 1.0–11.0 for 24 h. The adsorption process was strongly pH-dependent and weakly ionic-strength-dependent. Furthermore, the magnetic microspheres could be easily regenerated, rapidly separated from the solution, and reused for wastewater treatment. The results suggest that magnetic PGMA-g-PPy microspheres are a promising efficient adsorbent for the removal of CR from wastewater.

Abstract
Autonomously propelled micro/nanobots are one of the most advanced and integrated structures which have been fascinated researchers owing to its exceptional property that enables them to be carried out user-defined tasks more precisely even on an atomic scale. The unique architecture and engineering aspects of these manmade tiny devices make them viable options for widespread biomedical applications. Moreover, recent development in this line of interest demonstrated that micro/nanobots would be very promising for the water treatment as these can efficiently absorb or degrade the toxic chemicals from the polluted water based on their tunable surface chemistry. These auto propelled micro/nanobots catalytically degrade toxic pollutants into non-hazardous compounds more rapidly and effectively. Thus, for the last few decades, nanobots mediated water treatment gaining huge popularity due to its ease of operation and scope of guided motion that could be monitored by various external fields and stimuli. Also, these are economical, energy-saving, and suitable for large scale water treatment, particularly required for industrial effluents. However, the efficacy of these bots hugely relies on its design, characteristic of materials, properties of the medium, types of fuel, and surface functional groups. Minute variation for one of these things may lead to a change in its performance and hinders its dynamics of propulsion. It is deemed that nanobots might be a smart choice for using these as the new generation devices for treating industrial effluents before discharging it in the water bodies, which is a major concern for human health and the environment.

Abstract
Fe3O4 NPs are synthesized by the co-precipitation technique. Moreover, the pristine was coated by silica layer and then functionalized by 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTS). The sample possessed saturation magnetization with value equals 37 emu/g which made them to easily separate using external magnet. FT-IR, TGA, EDX, and VSM confirmed the aminosilane loading. The surface topography and composition were characterized using XRD, TEM, SEM, BJH, and BET methods. Where adsorption capacity of the surface toward the removal of four commercial reactive wool dyes (RD), Itowol black (IB), Itowol Red (IR), Sunzol black (SB), and Lanasol blue (LB) have been investigated. The influence variables such as pH, adsorbent dose, dye concentration, and temperature were calculated. Where experimental results fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with qmax equals 161.29, 151.51, 123.45, and 98.20 mg/g, for IR, LB, SB, and IB respectively. The results showed that the RD adsorption described by pseudo-second-order kinetics. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicated that RD adsorption onto Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The possible mechanisms monitoring RD adsorption on the surface included hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The reusability of adsorbent carried with four cycles without releasing of magnetite and thus excluding the potential hazardous of nanomaterial to the environment. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
The paper evaluates the adsorptive potential of thiourea-modified poly(acrylonitrile-co-acrylic acid), (TA-poly(AN-co-AA)) for the uptake of cationic methylene blue (MB) from aquatic environments via a batch system. TA-poly(AN-co-AA) polymer was synthesized through redox polymerization and modified with thiourea (TA) where thioamide groups were introduced to the surface. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), CHNS and Zetasizer were used to characterize the physico-chemical and morphological properties of prepared TA-poly(AN-co-AA). Afterwards, it was confirmed that incorporation of thioamide groups was successful. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium adsorption data were best described, respectively, by a pseudo-second-order model and Freundlich model. Thermodynamic analysis showed the exothermic and spontaneous nature of MB uptake by TA-poly(AN-co-AA). The developed TA-poly(AN-co-AA) polymer demonstrated efficient separation of MB dye from the aqueous solution and maintained maximum adsorption capacity after five regeneration cycles. The findings of this study suggested that synthesized TA-poly(AN-co-AA) can be applied successfully to remove cationic dyes from aquatic environments.

Abstract
This study was aimed at developing green histidine-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles (His-MNPs) for the adsorptive removal of Acid Black 1 (AB1) from aqueous solution. The His-MNPs were characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, infra-red spectra and thermogravimetry. These MNPs were spherical (average diameter 11–28 nm) with polydispersity index of 1.40 and about 13% mass coating of histidine. To optimize AB1 adsorption on His-MNPs and understand its mechanism, the influences of different operational variables (pH, adsorbent amount, temperature, initial AB1 concentration, contact time, ionic strength, etc.) on adsorption were examined with adsorption isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamic studies. The AB1 adsorption from water was fast with equilibrium time ≤ 45 min. The adsorption equilibrium was best fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (qmax = 166.7 mg g−1 at the adsorbent dose of 0.2 g L−1, temperature 30 °C and pH 4). The linearity order for other isotherms was as follows: Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) < Temkin < Freundlich. The kinetics of the AB1 adsorption demonstrated the best compliance with the pseudo-second-order model, predominantly controlled by film diffusion as compared to intraparticle diffusion. Thermodynamic parameters (ΔH° and ΔG°) reflected the exothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. The values of ΔG°, ΔH°, activation energy and D–R free adsorption energy were all consistent with the physisorptive removal of AB1. The spectral (electronic and IR) and pH studies further corroborated the mechanism of AB1 removal by His-MNPs. The His-MNPs showed efficient adsorption, easy regeneration and excellent reusability, assisted by their pH-responsive properties. The prepared adsorbent can provide a safe, effective and economical alternative strategy for removing azo dyes from wastewater. Effective and eco-friendly separation of Acid Black 1 dye from water by electrostatic adsorption onto reusable Histidine-Fe3O4 nanoparticles, credited to their pH-responsiveness.![]()

Abstract
A facile approach has been developed to construct a composite of magnetic Fe3O4 (MNPs) and regular hexagon Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (MNPs/MgAl-LDH) via a two-step hydrothermal method combined with the urea hydrolysis reaction for the removal of Orange II. The scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed MNPs and MgAl-LDH have been combined successfully, providing the combination of the superior properties of fast separation and high adsorption capacity. The pH values, contact time, initial dye concentration and temperature were investigated in detail. The kinetics and isotherm study showed the adsorption of Orange II on MNPs/MgAl-LDH obeyed the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model respectively and the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Also, some coexisting anions such as Cl-, NO3 -, CO3 - and SO4 2- had no significant effect on the removal of Orange II. The mechanism study revealed that the adsorption of Orange II on MNPs/MgAl-LDH mainly involves surface adsorption through electrostatic force and the layer anion exchange. Moreover, Orange II could be desorbed from MNPs/MgAl-LDH using 100 mg L-1 NaOH and used for four cycles without any adsorption performance loss, demonstrating MNPs/MgAl-LDH prepared in this work could be used as a cost-effective and efficient material for the removal of Orange II.
