Abstract
Newly formed playas, such as those resulting from the desiccation of Lake Urmia (LU) in northwest Iran, are significant global dust sources with implications for human health and the environment. Stabilizing these surfaces affordably can be achieved using locally sourced magnesium-enriched brine. To evaluate this approach, for LU playa, we examined the accumulation of ions, minerals deposition, and salt crust (Cr) formation in LU brine under both natural and laboratory conditions. We then assessed the effect of brines with varying Mg2+ concentrations (B0 ≈1.97, B5 ≈2.72, and B15 ≈ 3.62 mol/L) on the stabilization of two highly erodible soils (sand sheets and sandy salt crust), comparing them with commercial stabilizers: sodium alginate (Na-A) and sodium silicate (Na-S). The crusts were evaluated based on thickness, compressive strength, and soil loss in wind tunnel experiments. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) was employed to analyze crust morphology and elemental composition. The results indicated that in the pure crusts, halite was the dominant mineral in salt crusts, while bischofite (MgCl₂∙6H₂O) and epsomite (MgSO₄∙7H₂O) formed during different stages of brine evaporation. Bischofite appeared at the pond margins, indicating deposition from less concentrated brines (B0 and B5), while epsomite dominated the center during the final evaporation stages. Brine treatments significantly reduced soil loss to 1.2%, outperforming Na-A (4.88%), Na-S (30.35%), and the control (34.18%). SEM analysis confirmed aggregate formation due to NaCl and MgCl₂ precipitation. In conclusion, Mg-enriched LU brine demonstrated effectiveness comparable to commercial stabilizers in enhancing the resilience of highly erodible playa surfaces.

Abstract
Porous β-tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2; β-TCP) was prepared via freeze-drying and the effects of this process on pore shapes and sizes were investigated. Various samples were prepared by freezing β-TCP slurries above a liquid nitrogen surface at -180 °C with subsequent immersion in liquid nitrogen at -196 °C. These materials were then dried under reduced pressure in a freeze-dryer, after which they were sintered with heating. Compared with conventional heat-based drying, the resulting pores were more spherical, which increased both the mechanical strength and porosity of the β-TCP. These materials had a wide range of pore sizes from 50 to 200 µm, with the mean and median values both approximately 100 µm regardless of the freeze-drying conditions. Mercury porosimetry data showed that the samples contained small, interconnected pores with sizes of 1.24 ± 0.25 µm and macroscopic, interconnected pores of 25.8 ± 4.7 µm in size. The effects of nonionic surfactants having different hydrophilic/lipophilic balance (HLB) values on foaming and pore size were also investigated. Materials made with surfactants having lower HLB values exhibited smaller pores and lower porosity, whereas higher HLB surfactants gave higher porosity and slightly larger macropores. Even so, the pore diameter could not be readily controlled solely by adjusting the HLB value. The findings of this work indicated that high porosity (>75%) and good compressive strength (>2 MPa) can both be obtained in the same porous material and that foaming agents with HLB values between 12.0 and 13.5 were optimal.

Abstract
The dynamic wetting behavior of droplets impacting the coal surface directly affects the efficient application of water-based dust suppression materials in coal-related industrial production. In this paper, ultrapure water, Tween-80, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose are taken as the research objects. Using high-speed photography technology, the spreading, oscillation process, and splash morphology of many kinds of droplets during impacting the coal surface are captured. The effects of viscosity, surface tension, and impact velocity on dynamic wetting characteristics were studied. The results show that with the decrease of surface tension, the retraction and oscillation of droplets are significantly reduced. For the same kind of droplets, the greater the impact velocity, the faster the droplet spread, and the dimensionless maximum spreading coefficient (βmax) and dimensionless steady-state spreading coefficient (βe) of droplets are bigger. With the increase of velocity, the time for different kinds of droplets to reach the βmax increases. At the same impact velocity, βmax and βe of droplets (0.2% Tween-80 + 0.1% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) are the largest, indicating that adding a small amount of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can promote droplet spreading. With the increase of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose content, βmax and βe decreased gradually. The results have a great significance to the research, development, and scientific utilization of water-soluble polymer dust inhibitors.

Abstract
The water-based foam stabilized by the natural surfactant applied in the fabrication of porous materials has attracted extensive attention, as the advantages of cleanness, convenience and low cost. Particularly, the development of a green preparation method has became the main research focus and frontier. In this work, a green liquid foam with high stability was prepared by synergistic stabilization of natural plant astragalus membranaceus (AMS) and attapulgite (APT), and then a novel porous material with sufficient hierarchical pore structure was templated from the foam via a simple free radical polymerization of acrylamide (AM). The characterization results revealed that the amphiphilic molecules from AMS adsorbed onto the water-air interface and formed a protective shell to prevent the bubble breakup, and APT gathered in the plateau border and formed a three-dimensional network structure, which greatly slowed down the drainage rate. The porous material polyacrylamide/astragalus membranaceus/attapulgite (PAM/AMS/APT) showed the excellent adsorption performance for cationic dyes of Methyl Violet (MV) and Methylene Blue (MB) in water, and the maximum adsorption capacity could reach to 709.13 and 703.30 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the polymer material enabled to regenerate and cycle via a convenient calcination process, and the adsorption capacity was still higher than 200 mg/g after five cycles. In short, this research provided a new idea for the green preparation of porous materials and the treatment of water pollution.

Abstract
Dust pollution control is the basic guarantee of mine safety production, which has been widely concerned by scholars. Based on a total of 1786 publications collected by the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) from 2001 to 2021, this paper analyzes the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics, hot topics, and frontier trends of the international mine dust field during the past 20 years by using Citespace and VOSviewer knowledge graph technology. The research shows that the study of mine dust can be divided into three stages: initial period (2001 ~ 2008), stable transition period (2009 ~ 2016), and boom period (2017 ~ 2021). The journals and disciplines which belong to mine dust research mainly focus on environmental science and engineering technology. A stable core group of authors and institutions have been preliminarily formed in the dust research field. The main themes of the study contained the whole process of mine dust generation, transport, prevention, and control, as well as the consequences of disaster. At present, the hot research fields mainly focus on mine dust particle pollution, multi-stage dust prevention, and emission reduction technologies, and mine occupational protection, monitoring, and early warning. In the future, the research should focus on the mechanism of dust production and transportation, the theory of efficient prevention and control, the technology and equipment of precise prevention and control of dust, and the high-precision monitoring and early warning of dust concentration. Future research should be concerned with dust control in underground mines and deep concave open-pit mines with complicated and treacherous environments, and strengthen research institutions, interdisciplinary cooperation, and interaction so as to promote the integration and application of mine dust and automation, information, and intelligent technology.

Abstract
In order to solve the problem of environmental pollution caused by the escape of coal dust in open-pit coal mines, a composite dust suppressant was prepared from Enteromorpha, and the preparation factors (water-soluble polymer, temperature, solid content and surfactant) were optimized. The mechanism of dust suppression and the possibility of large-scale field application were discussed. The research results on the related properties of dust suppressants showed that the performance of Enteromorpha-based dust suppressants prepared by this method was excellent compared with similar studies. Among them, polyacrylamide (PAM) Enteromorpha-based dust suppressant had the best performance, with viscosity of 25.1 mPa s and surface tension of 27.05 mN/m. Moreover, PAM Enteromorpha-based dust suppressant had the best effect, with the mass loss of 2.94% under the wind speed of 10 m/s and the coal dust loss rate of 4.6% after rain erosion, and it had strong water retention performance. Through the discussion of dust suppression mechanism, it was found that the mechanical entangled network structure with hydrogen bonds as nodes was formed after the graft copolymerization of PAM and Enteromorpha. It had high permeability and good adhesion. After quickly wetting coal dust, it formed a dense package for coal dust. The field experiment also showed that the use of Enteromorpha-based dust suppressant can effectively inhibit the escape of coal dust. From the point of view of economy and efficiency, Enteromorpha can save 30% of the material cost and the dust suppression efficiency can reach 89-94%. Therefore, the Enteromorpha-based dust suppressant may stably suppress coal dust on the basis of reducing the cost.

Abstract
Dust pollution in open-pit coal mines severely restricts the green development of mines. Therefore, dust control has become an important requirement for the sustainable development of the mining industry. With the goal of dust pollution prevention and control in open-pit coal mines, this paper puts forward the concept of a non-disturbance area of an open-pit coal mine. It clarifies the characteristics of dust generation, the coverage area, and the dust particle size distribution characteristics of the non-disturbance area. Taking the dust control at the dump site as an example, the study comprehensively utilizes indoor tests and field tests to develop a dust suppressant for the dump site and determine its dust suppression efficiency and effective service cycle. The results show that the D10, D50, and D90 particle sizes of dust in the non-disturbance area are smaller than those in the disturbance area, and the difference in particle size of D90 is the most obvious. Gelatinized starch and non-ionic polyacrylamide, as the main components of the dust suppressant, can effectively reduce dust pollution in the dump; the optimal concentration is 1.0%, and the dust suppression service cycle is more than one month. The developed dust suppressant does not contain corrosive, toxic, or heavy metal elements. Although the application of a dust suppressant will cause plant growth to lag, it does not affect plant health. The research findings serve as a reference for the zoning treatment of dust in open-pit mines.

Abstract
The impact airflow generated by ore unloading in the chute raises the dust carried by the ore itself and the floating dust, and then, the dust raised enters the roadway with the airflow and pollutes the environment. In order to minimize the amount of dust entering the roadway and reduce the pollution of unloading dust, we conducted an experimental study of selection of best foam formula and pre-injection foam dust dedusting technology in ore bin. It was found that the optimal foaming formula was 1.0% sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) + 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) + (0.2 ~ 0.4%) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose CMC-Na and coconut oil monoethanolamide (CMEA) by the compound experiment using two evaluation criteria of initial foaming amount and foam defoaming rate. When the air pressure is 0.7 MPa, the foaming rate of the foam generator is proportional to the gas and liquid flow rate and the best foaming gas and liquid flow ratio is 27.8. Under this circumstance, the foaming rate of the foaming formula is 500 l/min. When the height of foam is controlled at 15 cm, the effect of foam dust removal is the best. The dust emission rate from the foam to the fourth level can reach 60%, and the dust fall rate of the third level is 28%, which effectively reduces the dust production and relieves the pressure of the spray hole dust fall at the wellhead.

Abstract
Liquid foams are multi-scale structures whose structural characterization requires the combination of very different techniques. This inherently complex task is made more difficult by the fact that foams are also intrinsically unstable systems and that their properties are highly dependent on the production protocol and sample container. To tackle these issues, a new device has been developed that enables the simultaneous time-resolved investigation of foams by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), electrical conductivity, and bubbles imaging. This device allows the characterization of the foam and its aging from nanometer up to centimeter scale in a single experiment. A specific SANS model was developed to quantitatively adjust the scattering intensity from the dry foam. Structural features such as the liquid fraction, specific surface area of the Plateau borders and inter-bubble films, and thin film thickness were deduced from this analysis, and some of these values were compared with values extracted from the other applied techniques. This approach has been applied to a surfactant-stabilized liquid foam under free drainage and the underlying foam destabilization mechanisms were discussed with unprecedented detail. For example, the information extracted from the image analysis and SANS data allows for the first time to determine the disjoining pressure vs. thickness isotherm in a real, draining foam.

Abstract
To better understand the effects of nonionic silicones and polymers on the wetting and foaming properties of anionic and nonionic hydrocarbon surfactants and different forces between molecules, nonionic silicone surfactant (GT-248), polymer (HPMC), anionic surfactant (AES), and nonionic surfactants (APG0810) were selected. The CMC ratio is used as a reference to determine the concentration ratio of the APG0810/GT-248 and AES/GT-248 compound solutions, after which HPMC was added to form a compound solution to test the wetting and foaming properties of the compound solution. The results showed that GT-248 obtained a high density of methyl groups on the surface of the solution due to its excellent spreadability and good flexibility of the siloxane chain, effectively reduces the surface tension and wetting time of AES and APG0810 solutions. But in terms of foam performance, after adding GT-248 to solution, the foam stability of AES solution is enhanced, the foam height of AES solution was reduced by 33.7%, the foam stability of APG0810 solution is weakened a lot, and the foam height of APG0810 solution was reduced by 85.4%. Mainly because of the difference in electronegativity between the AES and APG0810 head groups, the strong electronegativity between the AES head groups resulted in a smaller number of GT-248 insertions in the liquid film, which weakened the defoaming effect of GT-248. The weak interaction between the head groups of APG0810 resulted in a higher amount of GT-248 in the liquid film, and thus, the foam performance was greatly reduced. After the AES/GT-248 compound solution was preferred, by comparing the viscosity, surface tension, and the half-life of the foam, it was found that the addition of low concentration of polymer effectively improved the half-life of the foam without affecting the foaming properties, and the final choice of 4:1(AES/GT-248) + 1mgHPMC and 2:1(AES/GT-248) + 1mgHPMC composite solutions can be used as a superior dust suppression material.

Abstract
The unsteady foaming-agent mixing ratio in traditional foam-dust-suppression technology limited the dust suppression efficiency. Recent studies proved that the steady mixing ratio could be guaranteed by keeping the jet pumps or Venturis working under cavitation conditions, but the pressure loss of the current devices was over 50%. To decrease the pressure loss under cavitation conditions, we proposed a new mixing device by introducing a spoiler in the Venturi structure. Through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the spoiler structure influence on the downstream flow field and the cavitation cloud structure, which affected the total pressure loss of the device, were revealed. For structure optimization, the effect of the other geometric parameters, including the throat length and divergent angle, on the pressure loss was also studied. The proposed device enhanced the cavitation on the suction tube side of the throat; meanwhile, the cavitation in other parts of the device was avoided. Therefore, the cavitation zone in the proposed device was much smaller than that in current devices, and the pressure loss was reduced significantly. When the flow ratio was 0.5-1%, the critical pressure ratio of the proposed mixing device was 0.71-0.68, which indicated that the pressure loss was only 29%-32%. The laboratory experiment verified that when the proposed device worked under cavitation conditions, the accurate and steady mixing ratio was guaranteed. The field experiment indicated that due to the reduced pressure loss of the proposed device, the required water inlet pressure decreased to 0.29 MPa, and the dust suppression rate increased dramatically. This study was of important value in manipulating cavitation cloud structure using a spoiler, clarifying the influence of the cavitation cloud structure on the liquid mixing performance and expanding the application field of the cavitating mixing method.

Abstract
The water wettability of coal dust was very important for dust control when using water-based dust suppressant materials. The coal dust wettability strengthened by surface active ionic liquid was studied in this paper. The surface activity of ten ionic liquids with different anions Cl-, Br-, [BF4]-, [NTf2]- and cations [HOEtMIm]+, [Cnmim]+ (n = 4, 12, 14, 16) was studied by surface tension test. The water wettability of raw coal dust can be improved individually by adding ionic liquid to water or pre-treating coal dust by ionic liquids. The wettability of lignite was improved little, but that of bituminous coal and anthracite were improved much. The dual strengthened effects of ionic liquids on coal dust wettability were studied by the wetting results between ionic liquids solutions and ionic liquid-treated coal samples. The wettability of lignite can be strengthened under the combined action of [HOEtMIm][NTf2] and [C12MIm]Br, while other dual effects were not satisfactory. All ionic liquids combination had strengthened effects on the wettability of bituminous coal and anthracite, especially the [C12MIm]Br treatment and [C12MIm]Br solutions together had the best dual effects. The functional groups results indicated that the hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups in treated coal samples increased, the hydrophobic aliphatic hydrocarbon functional groups decreased and part of ionic liquids were adsorbed on the coal surface. These changes together enhanced the wettability of coal with high coalification degrees.

Abstract
In this paper, the atmospheric flow field characteristics in a deep open-pit mine are investigated numerically and theoretically. A theoretical model on the recirculation length based on the energy equation is used, and a total variation diminishing (TVD) difference scheme with second-order accuracy is used to solve the NS equations with a standard two-equation k-ε turbulence model. The effects of elevated inner dump on the flow field characteristics of the open-pit mine are analyzed detailedly with the same inflow parameters. The results show that a recirculation zone exists in the open-pit mine due to the reflux from the high-pressure zone to the low-pressure zone. As the height of the inner dump increases, the flow becomes more complicated, and the low-pressure zone and the recirculation zone become bigger. The elevated inner dump makes it difficult for the internal fluid to flow to the outside, which results in the increase of the dust concentration. At last, the influences of key parameters on flow filed are conducted by normalizing the depth of the lowest direct current flow on the windward slope. The sensitivity analysis is done by study each influencing factor. This paper offers an effective way to study the flow field characteristics in an open-pit coal mine, which is essential to the dust pollution control of open-pit mine.

Pickering foams and parameters influencing their characteristics. Adv Colloid Interface Sci 2022; 301:102606. Abstract
Pickering foams are available in many applications and have been continually gaining interest in the last two decades. Pickering foams are multifaceted, and their characteristics are highly dependent on many factors, such as particle size, charge, hydrophobicity and concentration as well as the charge and concentration of surfactants and salts available in the system. A literature review of these individual studies at first might seem confusing and somewhat contradictory, particularly in multi-component systems with particles and surfactants with different charges in the presence of salts. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of particle-stabilized foams, also known as Pickering foams and froths. Underlying mechanisms of foam stabilization by particles with different morphology, surface chemistry, size and type are reviewed and clarified. This paper also outlines the role of salts and different factors such as pH, temperature and gas type on Pickering foams. Further, we highlight recent developments in Pickering foams in different applications such as food, mining, oil and gas, and wastewater treatment industries, where Pickering foams are abundant. We conclude this overview by presenting important research avenues based on the gaps identified here. The focus of this review is limited to Pickering foams of surfactants with added salts and does not include studies on polymers, proteins, or other macromolecules.

Abstract
To mitigate environmental pollution caused by the escape of dust during coal storage and transportation, humic acid (HA) and grafted acrylamide (AM) were used as raw materials to prepare a composite dust suppressant suitable for coal storage and transportation. Single-factor experiments were used to explore the optimal synthesis conditions of the dust suppressant, and the microstructure of the product was studied using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and other methods. The wetting effect of the dust suppressant on coal was also investigated by way of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The experimental results showed that the dust suppressant had good wind erosion resistance (wind erosion rate 10.2%), shock resistance (loss rate 3.63%), and anti-evaporation performance, while the MD simulation and permeability analysis results showed that the dust suppressant had an excellent wetting effect on the coal surface. SEM images revealed that the dust suppressant can fill the gaps between coal dust particles and bond them together to form a consolidated layer, thereby effectively inhibiting the escape of dust sources during coal storage and transportation.

Abstract
As a new type of atomizing nozzle with superior atomizing performance, the liquid-medium ultrasonic atomization nozzle has been widely applied in the field of spray dust reduction. In this study, in order to establish a mathematical model for predicting the Sauter mean diameter (SMD) of such nozzles, the interaction between the SMD of the nozzle and the three influencing factors, i.e., air pressure, water pressure, and outlet diameter were investigated based on the custom-designed spraying experiment platform and orthogonal design methods. Through range analysis, it was obtained that the three parameters affecting the SMD of the nozzle are in the order of air pressure > water pressure > outlet diameter. On this basis, using the multivariate nonlinear regression method, the mathematical model for predicting the SMD of the nozzle was constructed. Comparison of the experimental results with the predicted values of the SMD of the nozzle by the multivariate nonlinear regression mathematical model, showed strong similarity with an average relative error of only about 5%. Therefore, the established mathematical model in this paper can be used to predict and calculate the droplet size for liquid-medium ultrasonic atomizing nozzles.

Abstract
Aqueous foam is widely used in fire extinguishing and dust suppression technologies. Improving the foaming ability is the key to reducing the added concentration of foaming agents as well as the economic cost. In this work, the effect of a water-soluble polymer (polyvinyl alcohol, PVA) on the foaming ability of anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl ether sulfate, SDES) was studied by an experiment and molecular dynamics simulation. The experimental results showed that PVA greatly improves the foaming ability of SDES solutions when the surfactant concentration is less than 0.1%, which is attributed to the fact that the polymer can enhance the stability of bubble films and reduce the bubble rupture rate during the foam generation process. The simulation results indicate that PVA can enhance the hydration of surfactant head groups and contribute to the formation of a three-dimensional hydrogen bond network between surfactants, polymers, and water molecules, thus greatly improving the stability of bubble liquid films. The above results suggest that water-soluble polymers can be used to improve the foaming ability of surfactant solutions by enhancing the bubble film stability, which is beneficial as it reduces the added concentration of foaming agents in aqueous foam applications.

Abstract
Safe mining is the premise and guarantee of sustainable development of coal energy. Due to the combination of excellent properties of polymers and traditional soft matters, polymer-containing soft matters are playing an increasingly important role in mine disaster and hazard control. To summarize the valuable work in recent years and provide reference and inspiration for researchers in this field, this paper reviewed the recent research progress in polymer-containing soft matters with respect to mine dust control, mine fire control, mine gas control and mine roadway support. From the perspective role of polymers in a material system, we classify mine polymer-containing soft matters into two categories. The first is polymer additive materials, in which polymers are used as additives to modify fluid-like soft matters, such as dust-reducing agents (surfactant solution) and dust-suppressing foams. The second is polymer-based materials, in which polymers are used as a main component to form high performance solid-like soft matters, such as fire prevention gels, foam gels, gas hole sealing material and resin anchorage agent. The preparation principle, properties and application of these soft matters are comprehensively reviewed. Furthermore, future research directions are also suggested.

Abstract
Understanding the interaction of particles with foams is important in antifoaming applications and dust suppression. In the former, the aim is for the particles to break the foam, whereas in the latter it is desirable that the stability of the foam is maintained or enhanced. The interaction of particles of different wettabilities with thin surfactant films is investigated with a Sheludko cell, enabling the thinning and rupture of the films to be studied in the presence and absence of a particle, using white-light interferometry. The films were prepared from the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and a commercial dust suppression foaming agent. The film lifetimes are extended upon the addition of hydrophilic particles and reduced upon the addition of hydrophobic particles with advancing contact angles >90°. The Laplace pressure in the film surrounding a particle is calculated as a function of the contact angle and particle size, revealing that the meniscus surrounding hydrophilic particles has a positive Laplace pressure, which increases the lifetime of the film.
