The Evolution of Sonochemistry: From the Beginnings to Novel Applications

Sonochemistry is the use of ultrasonic waves in an aqueous medium, to generate acoustic cavitation. In this context, sonochemistry emerged as a focal point over the past few decades, starting as a manageable process such as a cleaning technique. Now, it is found in a wide range of applications across various chemical, physical, and biological processes, creating opportunities for analysis between these processes. Sonochemistry is a powerful and eco-friendly technique often called "green chemistry" for less energy use, toxic reagents, and residues generation. It is increasing the number of applications achieved through the ultrasonic irradiation (USI) method. Sonochemistry has been established as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative compared to traditional industrial methods. It promotes scientific and social well-being, offering non-destructive advantages, including rapid processes, improved process efficiency, enhanced product quality, and, in some cases, the retention of key product characteristics. This versatile technology has significantly contributed to the food industry, materials technology, environmental remediation, and biological research. This review is created with enthusiasm and focus on shedding light on the manifold applications of sonochemistry. It delves into this technique's evolution and current applications in cleaning, environmental remediation, microfluidic, biological, and medical fields. The purpose is to show the physicochemical effects and characteristics of acoustic cavitation in different processes across various fields and to demonstrate the extending application reach of sonochemistry. Also to provide insights into the prospects of this versatile technique and demonstrating that sonochemistry is an adapting system able to generate more efficient products or processes.

Catalytic degradation of crystal violet and methyl orange in heterogeneous Fenton-like processes

Metals-loaded (Fe3+, Cu2+ and Zn2+) activated carbons (M@AC) with different loading ratios (0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 5% and 10%) were prepared and employed for catalytic degradation of dye model compounds (crystal violet (CV) and methyl orange (MO)) in wastewater by heterogeneous Fenton-like technique. Compared with Cu@AC and Zn@AC, 0.5% Fe3+ loaded AC (0.5Fe@AC) had better catalytic activity for dyes degradation. The effects of dyes initial concentration, catalyst dosage, pH and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) volume on the catalytic degradation process were investigated. Cyclic performance, stability of 0.5Fe@AC and iron leaching were explored. Degradation kinetics were well fitted to the pseudo-second-order model (Langmuir-Hinshelwood). Almost complete decolorization (99.7%) of 400 mg L-1 CV was achieved after 30 min reaction under the conditions of CV volume (30 mL), catalyst dosage (0.05 g), H2O2 volume (1 mL) and pH (7.7). Decolorization of MO reached 98.2% under the same conditions. The abilities of pyrolysis char (PC) of dyeing sludge (DS) and metal loaded carbon to remove dye pollutants were compared. The intermediate products were analyzed and the possible degradation pathway was proposed. This study provided an insight into catalytic degradation of triphenylmethane- and aromatic azo-based substances, and utilization of sludge char.

Harnessing ultrasound in photocatalysis: Synthesis and piezo-enhanced effect: A review

The photocatalytic technique has drawn far-ranging interests in addressing the current issues; however, its property suffers from the limited visible light response and rapid recombination of carriers. To address these issues, two specific approaches have been proposed to enhance the photocatalytic activity: (1) ultrasound-assisted synthesis has been utilized to prepare photocatalysts, resulting in refined grain size, increased specific surface area, and reduced photogenerated carrier recombination; (2) sonophotocatalysis and piezoelectric enhanced photocatalysis have been developed to accelerate the reaction, which utilizes the synergism between ultrasound and light. On one side, sonophotocatalysis generates cavitation bubbles which induce more reactive radicals for redox reactions. On the other side, ultrasound induces deformation of the piezoelectric material structure, which changes the internal piezoelectric potential and improves the photocatalytic performance. Currently, intensive efforts have been devoted to related research and great progress has been reached with applications in pollutant degradation, new energy production, and other fields. This work starts by elucidating the fundamental concept of ultrasound-assisted photocatalyst synthesis and photocatalysis. Then, the synergistic behavior between ultrasonic and light in ultrasonic-assisted photocatalysis has been thoroughly discussed, including pollutant degradation, water splitting, and bacterial sterilization. Finally, the challenge and outlook are investigated and proposed.

Green Synthesis of Magnetic Supramolecules β-Cyclodextrin/Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Applications

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4NPs) are a fascinating field of study due to their wide range of practical applications in environmental and medical contexts. This study presents a straightforward, environmentally friendly method for producing Fe3O4NPs utilizing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a reducing and capping agent. This approach results in the rapid and effective eco-friendly synthesis of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs. The properties and characteristics of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs were investigated using various methods, including ultraviolet-visible (UV/vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM). The absorption of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs caused a distinct peak at 349 nm, as evidenced by the results of UV/vis studies. This peak was attributed to the absorption of surface plasmon resonance. The crystalline nature of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs was confirmed through XRD analysis. The SEM and TEM analyses have verified the geometry and structural characteristics of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs. The β-CD/Fe3O4NPs exhibited remarkable effectiveness in the decomposing efficiency (%) of methylene blue (MB) dye with 52.2, 94.1, and 100% for 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g β-CD/Fe3O4NPs, respectively. In addition, the highest efficiency in hunting radicals was observed (347.2 ± 8.2 mg/g) at 100 mg/mL β-CD/Fe3O4NPs; the combination of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs exhibited remarkable effectiveness in inhibiting the growth of some bacteria that cause infections. The capabilities of β-CD/Fe3O4NPs for various applications showed that these materials could be used in photocatalytic, antioxidants, and antibacterial. Additionally, the eco-friendly synthesis of these materials makes them a promising option for the remediation of harmful pollutants and microbes.

Treatment of textile industry wastewater by using high-performance forward osmosis membrane tailored with alpha-manganese dioxide nanoparticles for fertigation

Forward osmosis (FO) technology has been acknowledged as an energy-efficient cutting-edge water treatment innovation; however, the inefficient performance of polymer-based membranes remains a tailback in the practical utilization of FO. A significant issue in FO is membrane fouling, which negatively influences the flux efficiency, working expenses and membrane life expectancy. Membranes having high water flux and minimum reverse solute flux at low operating pressures are the ideal membranes for this process. This study reports a thin-film nanocomposite (TFNC) membrane for the treatment of textile industry wastewater utilizing fertilizer as draw solution fabricated via the phase inversion process. The chemical structure and morphology of the synthesized manganese oxide (MnO₂) incorporated membrane were studied by various characterization techniques like X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, contact angle and gravimetry. The outcomes demonstrated that the nanoparticles were bonded to cellulose acetate polymer via covalent bonds and showed very hydrophilic membrane surface, along with an increased osmotic water flux of 52.5 L.m².h^-1 and reverse salt flux of 10.9 g.m².h^-1, when deionized wastewater and potassium chloride were used as the feed solution and the draw solution, respectively. In this manner, incorporating manganese oxide into the FO membrane may introduce its extraordinary possible application for the production of diluted fertilizer solution with balanced nutrients.

Visible light-driven photocatalytic rapid degradation of organic contaminants engaging manganese dioxide-incorporated iron oxide three dimensional nanoflowers

Water pollution via hazardous organic pollutants poses a high threat to the environment and globally imperils aquatic life and human health. Therefore, the elimination of toxic organic waste from water sources is vital to ensure a healthy green environment. In the current work, we synthesized α-MnO₂-Fe₃O₄ 3D-flower like structure using a two-step hydrothermal method and explored the combination in a visible-light-assisted photocatalytic degrdation of dyes. The attained high specific surface area of 82 m²/g with mesoporous nature of α-MnO₂ and Fe₃O₄ together can generate more active sites after exposure to visible light, leading to remarkable photodegradation performance. Significantly, twofold higher dye (methylene blue, MB (94.8%/120 min; crystal violet, CV (93.7%/120 min)) and drug (LVO 91%/90 min) photodegradations were observed with α-MnO₂-Fe₃O₄ as catalyst than pure α-MnO₂ and Fe₃O₄ at pH 6, respectively. This is attributed to the higher surface area and synergistic effect between Mn and Fe. More than 85% stability was observed with optimized catalysts employing MB and CV dyes, demonstrating the excellent reusability of the α-MnO₂-Fe₃O₄. The underlying mechanism indicates that the formation of reactive oxygen species predominantly plays a role in the photodegradation of dyes under visible light. Consequently, these new insights will shed light on the practical applications of the α-MnO₂-Fe₃O₄ 3D-flower-like spherical structure for eco-friendly remediation via wastewater treatment.

An Enzymatic Multiplexed Impedimetric Sensor Based on α-MnO2/GQD Nano-Composite for the Detection of Diabetes and Diabetic Foot Ulcer Using Micro-Fluidic Platform

Diabetes is widely considered as a silent killer which affects the internal organs and ultimately has drastic impacts on our day-to-day activities. One of the fatal outcomes of diabetes is diabetic foot ulcer (DFU); which, when becomes chronic, may lead to amputation. The incorporation of nanotechnology in developing bio-sensors enables the detection of desired biomarkers, which in our study are glucose and L-tyrosine; which gets elevated in patients suffering from diabetes and DFUs, respectively. Herein, we report the development of an enzymatic impedimetric sensor for the multi-detection of these biomarkers using an electrochemical paper-based analytical device (µ-EPADs). The structure consists of two working electrodes and a counter electrode. One working electrode is modified with α-MnO2-GQD/tyrosinase hybrid to aid L-tyrosine detection, while the other electrode is coated with α-MnO2-GQD/glucose oxidase hybrid for glucose monitoring. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy has been employed for the quantification of glucose and L-tyrosine, within a concentration range of 50–800 mg/dL and 1–500 µmol/L, respectively, using a sample volume of approximately 200 µL. The impedance response exhibited a linear relationship over the analyte concentration range with detection limits of ~58 mg/dL and ~0.3 µmol/L for glucose and tyrosine respectively, with shelf life ~1 month. The sensing strategy was also translated to Arduino-based device applications by interfacing the µ-EPADs with miniaturized electronics.

Influence of nickel doping on MnO2 nanoflowers as electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Abstract

Doping is promising strategy for the alteration of nanomaterials to enhance their optical, electrical, and catalytic activities. The development of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR) with excellent activity, low cost and durability is essential for the large-scale utilization of energy storage devices such as batteries. In this study, MnO2 and Ni-doped MnO2 nanowires were prepared through a simple co-perception technique. The influence of nickel concentration on electrochemical performance was studied using linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. The morphological, thermal, structural, and optical properties  of MnO2 and Ni-doped MnO2 nanowires were examined by SEM, ICP-OES, FT-IR, XRD, UV–Vis, BET and TGA/DTA. Morphological analyses showed that pure MnO2 and Ni-doped MnO2 had flower-like and nanowire structures, respectively. The XRD study confirmed the phase transformation from ε to α and β phases of MnO2 due to the dopant. It was also noted from the XRD studies that the crystallite sizes of pure MnO2 and Ni-doped MnO2 were in the range of 2.25–6.6 nm. The band gaps of MnO2 and 0.125 M Ni-doped MnO2 nanoparticles were estimated to be 2.78 and 1.74 eV, correspondingly, which can be seen from UV–Vis. FTIR spectroscopy was used to determine the presence of functional groups and M–O bonds (M = Mn, Ni). The TGA/TDA examination showed that Ni-doping in MnO2 led to an improvement in its thermal properties. The cyclic voltammetry  results exhibited that Ni-doped MnO2 nanowires have remarkable catalytic performance for ORR in 0.1 M KOH alkaline conditions. This work contributes to the facile preparation of highly active and durable catalysts with improved catalytic performance mainly due to the predominance of nickel.
