Chitosan functionalized cellulose nanocrystals for stabilizing Pickering emulsion: Fabrication, characterization and stability evaluation

Cross-linked chitosan as biomacromolecular adsorbents for adsorption of precious metal-chloride complexes from aqueous media

Precious metal recovery from secondary sources has received significant attention due to the reduced availability of precious metals from conventional sources. Herein, chitosan (CHT) was modified via cross-linking with glutaraldehyde (glu) to yield CHT-glu adsorbents with improved physicochemical and adsorption properties with precious metal ions (Au(III) and Pd(II)). CHT-glu adsorbents were prepared at variable glu ratios and characterized via complementary spectral (IR, 13C solids NMR, XPS) and thermogravimetry methods. The adsorbents display remarkably enhanced properties relative to CHT upon incremental cross-linking, which includes structural stability in acidic media, greater porosity and surface area with unparalleled adsorption at pH 2. The highest metal-ion uptake capacity for the CHT-glu adsorbent system was 1322 mg/g (Au(III)) and 1337 mg/g (Pd(II)). Electrostatic and chelation interactions govern the adsorption mechanism of gold and palladium species by CHT-glu, as supported by XPS results. The CHT-glu systems display superior solid phase extraction properties for the recovery of precious metals from acidic leachate, which is relevant to sustainable metal recovery from tailings or industrial wastewater effluent.

Characterization, adsorption kinetic and in vitro release behavior of curcumin loaded with porous mannitol and porous lactose: Template agent method vs. Pore-forming agent method

Polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 was used as the templating agent, and ammonium bicarbonate was used as the pore-forming agent to make porous mannitol and porous lactose by the template and pore-forming agent method, respectively. Compared with the template method, the porous particles prepared by the pore-forming agent method have larger pore diameter (320.276 nm and 250.528 nm) and specific surface area (1.018 m2/g and 0.913 m2/g). The molecular docking results showed that mannitol/lactose interacted with curcumin and adhered to each other through hydrogen bonding. The adsorption kinetics process of porous mannitol and porous lactose prepared by template agent, pore-forming agent and curcumin were different. Among the curcumin-loaded porous particles prepared by the two methods, the curcumin-loaded porous lactose prepared by the pore-forming agent method had the fastest release rate and the highest cumulative release rate (95 %). Curcumin releases consistent with the Peppas release kinetics model and the diffusion mechanism.

Applications and Advantages of Cellulose-Chitosan Biocomposites: Sustainable Alternatives for Reducing Plastic Dependency

This review presents a comprehensive review of cellulose-chitosan-based biocomposites that have high potential as sustainable alternatives to synthetic polymers. These biocomposites, due to biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties, attract attention for wide application in various industries. This review includes modern methods for producing cellulose-chitosan composites aimed at improving their mechanical and chemical properties, such as strength, flexibility, and water resistance. Particular attention is paid to the use of composites in packaging materials, where they provide protection and durability of products, and help reduce the environmental footprint. In medicine, such composites are used for drug delivery and tissue engineering, providing controlled release of active substances and tissue regeneration. In addition, their advantages in wastewater treatment are discussed, where the composites effectively remove heavy metal ions and organic pollutants due to their high sorption capacity. This study focuses on the wide potential of cellulose-chitosan biocomposites and their role in solving environmental problems.

Spray-drying and rehydration on β-carotene encapsulated Pickering emulsion with chitosan and seaweed polyphenol

The spray-drying process to generate microcapsules from Pickering emulsions needs high temperatures, leading to instability of emulsions and degradation of encapsulated thermosensitive compounds (β-carotene). However, these effects may be attenuated by the introduction of seaweed polyphenols into the emulsion interfacial layers, although the effects underlying this protective mechanism have not been explored. This study evaluates the effects of spray-drying/rehydration on the morphology, encapsulation efficiency, redispersibility, and stability of β-carotene loaded Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitosan (PESC) and Pickering emulsions stabilized by chitosan/seaweed polyphenols (PESCSP). The encapsulation efficiency of β-carotene in PESCSP microcapsules (61.13 %) was higher than PESC (53.91 %). Rehydrated PESCSP exhibited more regular droplet size distribution, higher stability, stronger 3D network morphology, and lower redispersibility index (1.5) compared to rehydrated PESC. Analyses of interfacial layers of emulsions revealed that chitosan covalently bound fatty acids at their hydrophobic side. Polyphenols were linked to chitosan at the hydrophilic side of emulsions through hydrogen bonds, providing 3D network between droplets and antioxidant activities to inhibit the degradation of β-carotene. This study emphasized the role of polyphenols in the interfacial layers of Pickering emulsions for the development of efficient delivery systems and protection of β-carotene and other thermosensitive bioactive compounds during spray-drying and rehydration.

Properties of APTES-Modified CNC Films

Sulfated cellulose nanocrystals' (CNCs') facile aqueous dispersibility enables producing films, fibers, and other materials using only water as a solvent but prevents using sulfated CNCs in applications that require water immersion. We report that modifying CNCs with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) via a simple, single-pot reaction scheme dramatically improves the hydrolytic stability of CNC films. The effects of APTES modification on CNCs' properties were studied using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force and optical microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic light scattering, and ultimate analysis. Substituting a mere 12.6% of the CNCs' available hydroxyl groups with APTES dramatically increased the hydrolytic stability of shear cast films while only having minor impacts on their mechanical properties. In addition, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCMD) and multiparametric surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR) studies showed that the CNC-APTES films also had a greater irreversible binding with carbofuran, a pesticide and emerging contaminant. These results highlight that APTES modification is a promising method for increasing the utility of sulfated CNCs in sensors, adsorbents, and other applications requiring water immersion.

The Fabrication, Drug Loading, and Release Behavior of Porous Mannitol

Porous materials are widely used as an effective strategy for the solubilization of insoluble drugs. In order to improve the solubility and bioavailability of low water-solubility drugs, it is necessary to prepare porous materials. Mannitol is one of the most popular excipients in food and drug formulations. In this study, porous mannitol was investigated as a drug carrier for low water solubility drugs. Its fabrication, drug loading, and drug release mechanisms were investigated. Porous mannitol was fabricated using the co-spray-antisolvent process and utilizing polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30) as the template agent. Porous mannitol particles were prepared by changing the proportion of the template agent, spraying the particles with mannitol, and eluting with ethanol in order to regulate their pore structure. In subsequent studies, porous mannitol morphology and characteristics were determined systematically. Furthermore, curcumin and ibuprofen, two poorly water-soluble drugs, were loaded into porous mannitol, and their release profiles were analyzed. The results of the study indicated that porous mannitol can be prepared using PVP K30 as a template and that the amount of template agent can be adjusted in order to control the structure of the porous mannitol. When the template agent was added in amounts of 1%, 3%, and 5%, the mannitol pore size increased by 167.80%, 95.16%, and 163.98%, respectively, compared to raw mannitol. Molecular docking revealed that mannitol and drugs are adsorbents and adhere to each other by force interaction. The cumulative dissolution of curcumin and ibuprofen-loaded porous mannitol reached 69% and 70%, respectively. The release mechanism of curcumin and ibuprofen from drug-loaded mannitol was suitable for the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. In summary, the co-spray-antisolvent method proved effective in fabricating porous materials rapidly, and porous mannitol had a remarkable effect on drug solubilization. The results obtained are conducive to the development of porous materials.

Stability protection of lutein emulsions by utilizing a functional conjugate of collagen and Lycium barbarum L. leaf flavonoid

Lutein exhibits excellent functional activity making it useful in many fields. Nevertheless, its use is limited by its physical and chemical instability. Here, collagen and Lycium barbarum L. leaf flavonoids (LBLF) were used as emulsifiers, their structures were characterized, the properties of the complexes were evaluated, and their stabilizing effects on lutein emulsions were explored. According to the results, the encapsulation rate of the complex of collagen-LBLF was (68.67 ± 1.43) % and the drug loading was (6.92 ± 0.13) %. Collagen compounded LBLF with a changed structure and morphology, resulting in improved antioxidant capacity, better foaming and emulsification, and reduced hydrophobicity. In addition, the thiobarbituric acid value of collagen-LBLF stabilized lutein emulsion (0.0012 ± 0.00011) mg/kg was significantly lower than that of collagen stabilized lutein emulsion (0.0021 ± 0.00016)  mg/kg (P < 0.05), indicating that the composite stabilized lutein emulsion obtained higher stability. LBLF contributed a high free radical scavenging effect and inhibited lutein degradation during storage. During simulated digestion, collagen-LBLF effectively stabilized the emulsion and protected lutein from destruction, made it release more slowly, and benefited the bio-accessibility of lutein during the next utilization step. Based on the present study, improved storage and digestion stabilities of lutein wereachievedby the utilization of collagen-LBLF complex, which provides a new method for the preparation and application of composite functional emulsifiers.

Cellulose Nanocrystal Embedded Composite Foam and Its Carbonization for Energy Application

In this study, we fabricated a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-embedded aerogel-like chitosan foam and carbonized the 3D foam for electrical energy harvesting. The nanocrystal-supported cellulose foam can demonstrate a high surface area and porosity, homogeneous size ranging from various microscales, and a high quality of absorbing external additives. In order to prepare CNC, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was chemically treated with sulfuric acid. The CNC incorporates into chitosan, enhancing mechanical properties, crystallization, and generation of the aerogel-like porous structure. The weight percentage of the CNC was 2 wt% in the chitosan composite. The CNC/chitosan foam is produced using the freeze-drying method, and the CNC-embedded CNC/chitosan foam has been carbonized. We found that the degree of crystallization of carbon structure increased, including the CNCs. Both CNC and chitosan are degradable materials when CNC includes chitosan, which can form a high surface area with some typical surface-related morphology. The electrical cyclic voltammetric result shows that the vertical composite specimen had superior electrochemical properties compared to the horizontal composite specimen. In addition, the BET measurement indicated that the CNC/chitosan foam possessed a high porosity, especially mesopores with layer structures. At the same time, the carbonized CNC led to a significant increase in the portion of micropore.

Chitosan particles modulate the properties of cellulose nanocrystals through interparticle interactions: Effect of concentration

The physical and chemical properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were regulated by physical crosslinking with chitosan particles (CSp). At a fixed concentration (0.5 wt%) of CNC, varying CSp concentration (0.02-0.5 wt%) influenced the morphologies and chemical properties of the obtained complex particles (CNC-CSp). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and zeta potential confirmed the electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between CSp and CNC. At a low CSp concentration (0.02-0.05 wt%), the charge shielding effect induced the formation of particle aggregation networks, thus showing increased viscosity, turbidity and size (153.4-2605.7 nm). At a higher CSp concentration (0.1-0.5 wt%), the hydrogen bonding interaction promoted CSp adsorption onto the surface of CNC, thus facilitating the dispersion of CNC-CSp due to electrostatic repulsion caused by surface-adsorbed CSp. In addition, CSp improved the thermal stability, hydrophobicity (41.87-60.02°) and rheological properties of CNC. Compared with CNC, CNC-CSp displayed a better emulsifying ability and emulsion stability, in which CSp could play a dual role (i.e., charge regulator and stabilizer). This study suggests that introducing CSp can improve the properties and application potentials of CNC as food colloids.

Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Fish Myofibrillar Proteins Modified with Tannic Acid, as Influenced by Different Drying Methods

A novel food-grade, particles-based Pickering emulsion (PE) was prepared from a marine source. Yellow stripe trevally is an under-utilized species. The use of its muscle protein as solid food-grade particles for the preparation of a Pickering emulsion can be a potential means of obtaining the natural nutritive emulsifier/stabilizer. Fish myofibrillar proteins (FMP) were modified with tannic acid (TA) at varying concentrations (0.125, 0.25, and 0.5%) followed by freeze-drying (FD) or spray-drying (SD). Physicochemical characteristics and emulsifying properties of obtained FMP-TA complexed particles were assessed for structural changes and oil-in-water emulsion stabilization. The addition of TA caused a reduction in surface hydrophobicity and total sulfhydryl content values for either FD-FMP or SD-FMP. Conversely, disulfide bond content was significantly increased, particularly when TA at 0.5% was used (p < 0.05). FTIR, spectrofluorometer, and the protein pattern also confirmed the cross-linking between FMP and TA. SD-FMP modified with 0.5% TA (SD-FMP-0.5TA) rendered the highest emulsifying stability index but had a lowered emulsifying activity index (p < 0.05). Confocal microscopic images, droplet size, and rheological properties revealed that a SD-FMP-0.5TA-stabilized emulsion had higher stability after 45 days of storage than an FD-FMP-0.5TA-stabilized emulsion. Therefore, the SD-FMP-0.5TA complex could be used as a potential food-grade stabilizer/emulsifier for PE with enhanced emulsifying properties.

Fabrication and Characterization of β-Cyclodextrin/Mosla Chinensis Essential Oil Inclusion Complexes: Experimental Design and Molecular Modeling

Essential oils (EOs) are primarily isolated from medicinal plants and possess various biological properties. However, their low water solubility and volatility substantially limit their application potential. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to improve the solubility and stability of the Mosla Chinensis (M. Chinensis) EO by forming an inclusion complex (IC) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Furthermore, the IC formation process was investigated using experimental techniques and molecular modeling. The major components of M. Chinensis 'Jiangxiangru' EOs were carvacrol, thymol, o-cymene, and terpinene, and its IC with β-CD were prepared using the ultrasonication method. Multivariable optimization was studied using a Plackett-Burman design (step 1, identifying key parameters) followed by a central composite design for optimization of the parameters (step 2, optimizing the key parameters). SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and dissolution experiments were performed to analyze the physicochemical properties of the ICs. In addition, the interaction between EO and β-CD was further investigated using phase solubility, molecular docking, and molecular simulation studies. The results showed that the optimal encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of EO in the ICs were 86.17% and 8.92%, respectively. Results of physicochemical properties were different after being encapsulated, indicating that the ICs had been successfully fabricated. Additionally, molecular docking and dynamics simulation showed that β-CD could encapsulate the EO component (carvacrol) via noncovalent interactions. In conclusion, a comprehensive methodology was developed for determining key parameters under multivariate conditions by utilizing two-step optimization experiments to obtain ICs of EO with β-CD. Furthermore, molecular modeling was used to study the mechanisms involved in molecular inclusion complexation.

Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Chitosan/Natural Acacia Gum Biopolymers: Effects of pH and Salt Concentrations

In this study, chitosan (CT) and naturally occurring acacia gum (AG) blends were employed as emulsifiers to form a series of emulsions developed from diesel and water. Effects of pH level (3, 5, 10, and 12) and various NaCl salt concentrations (0.25-1%) on the stability, viscosity, and interfacial properties of CT-(1%)/AG-(4%) stabilized Pickering emulsions were evaluated. Bottle test experiment results showed that the stability indexes of the CT/AG emulsions were similar under acidic (3 and 5) and alkaline (10 and 12) pH media. On the other hand, the effects of various NaCl concentrations on the stability of CT-(1%)/AG-(4%) emulsion demonstrated analogous behavior throughout. From all the NaCl concentrations and pH levels examined, viscosities of this emulsion decreased drastically with the increasing shear rate, indicating pseudoplastic fluid with shear thinning characteristics of these emulsions. The viscosity of CT-(1%)/AG-(4%) emulsion increased at a low shear rate and decreased with an increasing shear rate. The presence of NaCl salt and pH change in CT/AG solutions induced a transformation in the interfacial tension (IFT) at the diesel/water interface. Accordingly, the IFT values of diesel/water in the absence of NaCl/CT/AG (without emulsifier and salt) remained fairly constant for a period of 500 s, and its average IFT value was 26.16 mN/m. In the absence of salt, the addition of an emulsifier (CT-(1%)/AG-(4%)) reduced the IFT to 16.69 mN/m. When the salt was added, the IFT values were further reduced to 12.04 mN/m. At low pH, the IFT was higher (17.1 mN/M) compared to the value of the IFT (10.8 mN/M) at high pH. The results obtained will help understand the preparation and performance of such emulsions under different conditions especially relevant to oil field applications.

Effect of the Interactions between Oppositely Charged Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNCs) and Chitin Nanocrystals (ChNCs) on the Enhanced Stability of Soybean Oil-in-Water Emulsions

Chitin nanocrystals (ChNCs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been recently used to stabilize emulsions; however, they generally require significant amounts of salt, limiting their applicability in food products. In this study, we developed nanoconjugates by mixing positively charged ChNCs and negatively charged CNCs at various ChNC:CNC mass ratios (2:1, 1:1, and 1:2), and utilized them in stabilizing soybean oil-water Pickering emulsions with minimal use of NaCl salt (20 mM) and nanoparticle (NP) concentrations below 1 wt%. The nanoconjugates stabilized the emulsions better than individual CNC or ChNC in terms of a reduced drop growth and less creaming. Oppositely charged CNC and ChNC neutralized each other when their mass ratio was 1:1, leading to significant flocculation in the absence of salt at pH 6. Raman spectroscopy provided evidence for electrostatic interactions between the ChNCs and CNCs, and generated maps suggesting an assembly of ChNC bundles of micron-scale lengths intercalated by similar-size areas predominantly composed of CNC. The previous measurements, in combination with contact angles on nanoparticle films, suggested that the conjugates preferentially exposed the hydrophobic crystalline planes of CNCs and ChNCs at a 1:1 mass ratio, which was also the best ratio at stabilizing soybean oil-water Pickering emulsions.

Chitosan/zein films incorporated with essential oil nanoparticles and nanoemulsions: Similarities and differences

The purpose of this study was to prepare chitosan/zein (CS/Zein) edible films reinforced with Mosla chinensis essential oils (EOs) nanoemulsions (NEs) and nanoparticles (NPs) in order to compare their properties. NEs and NPs containing EOs could be used to fabricate films with functional properties, and the films were prepared using a casting method. The influence of EO concentration and mixing methods on the physical, mechanical, and functional properties of the films was investigated. The results indicated that the films formulated with EO NEs generated favorable fundamental and functional characteristics with excellent mechanical properties, moisture barrier capacity, and significant antioxidant and antibacterial activity. In addition, the use of NEs-based films improved the release of bioactive compounds, and the mechanism of EO release was found to follow a first order model. In summary, EO NEs were more effective in preserving the fundamental and functional properties of CS/Zein nanocomposite edible films than NP-based films. These differences may reflect different forms and methods of dispersing EOs in NEs and NPs. This study demonstrated that NEs reinforced films could be used to enhance the effectiveness of EOs in food products and develop new strategies for their delivery and application.

Evaluation of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Silica Particles on the Release Kinetics of Essential Oil Pickering Emulsions

Colloidal particle-stabilized emulsions have recently gained increasing interest as delivery systems for essential oils. Despite the use of silica particles in food and pharmaceutical applications, the formation and release of hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica particle-stabilized emulsions are still not well studied. Thus, in this study, the structures of hydrophilic (A200, A380, 244FP, and 3150) and hydrophobic (R202 and R106) silica were deeply characterized using the solid state, contact angle, and other properties that could affect the formation of emulsions. Following that, Mosla chinensis essential oil emulsions were stabilized with different types of silica, and their characteristics, particularly their release behavior, were studied. Fick's second law was used to investigate the mechanism of release. Additionally, six mathematical models were employed to assess the experimental data of release: zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, Hixson-Crowell, Peppas, and Page models. The release mechanism of essential oils demonstrated that diffusion was the dominant mechanism, and the fitting results for the release kinetics confirmed that the release profiles were governed by the Higuchi model. The contact angle and specific surface area were the key properties that affect the release of essential oils from emulsions. Hydrophilic A200 was found to be capable of delivering essential oils more efficiently, and silica particles could be extended to achieve the controlled release of bioactives. This study showed that understanding the impact of silica particles on the release behavior provided the basis for modulating and mapping material properties to optimize the performance of emulsion products.

Nanocrystals based mucosal delivery system: Research Advances

Nanocrystal technology is a new way to increase the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. As an intermediate preparation technology, nanocrystals are widely used in drug delivery for oral, venous, percutneous and inhalation administration, which exhibits a broad application prospect. By referring to the domestic anforeign literatures, this paper mainly reviews the preparation methods of nanocrystals for poorly soluble natural products and its application in the mucosal delivery for skin, eye, oral cavity and nasal cavity. This can provide the reference for the research and development of nanocrystal technology in natural product preparations.
