Preliminary study on the effects of ageing cold oxygen plasma treated PET/PP with respect to protein adsorption

Hydrophobic Recovery of Plasma-Hydrophilized Polyethylene Terephthalate Polymers

Oxygen plasma is widely used for enhancing the wettability of numerous polymers, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The treatment with plasma containing oxygen will cause surface functionalization with polar functional groups, which will, in turn, improve the wettability. However, the exact mechanisms leading to the hydrophilic or even super-hydrophilic surface finish are still insufficiently explored. The wettability obtained by plasma treatment is not permanent, since the hydrophobic recovery is usually reported. The mechanisms of hydrophobic recovery are reviewed and explained. Methods for suppressing this effect are disclosed and explained. The recommended treatment which assures stable hydrophilicity of PET samples is the treatment with energetic ions and/or vacuum ultraviolet radiation (VUV). The influence of various plasma species on the formation of the highly hydrophilic surface finish and stability of adequate wettability of PET materials is discussed.

Evaluation of surface properties of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films tailored by atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma (APNTP) assisted co-polymerization and immobilization of chitosan for improvement of antifouling properties

This work describes the development of antifouling functional coatings on the surface of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films by means of atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma (APNTP) assisted copolymerization using a mixture of acrylic acid and poly (ethylene glycol). The aim of the study was to investigate the antifouling properties of the plasma copolymerized LDPE films and the same was carried out as a function of deposition time with fixed applied potential of 14 kV. In a second stage, the plasma copolymerized LDPE films were functionalized with chitosan (CHT) to further enhance its antifouling properties. The surface hydrophilicity, structural, topographical and chemistry of the plasma copolymerized LDPE films were examined by contact angle (CA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Coating stability was also studied in detail over a storage time of 15 days by storing in water and air. The antifouling properties of the plasma copolymerized LDPE films were examined via protein adsorption and platelet adhesion studies. CA study showed significant changes in surface wettability after the coating process. XPS and FTIR analysis proved the presence of a dense multifunctional coating and an efficient immobilization of CHT. Substantial amendments in surface topography were observed, positively enhancing the overall surface hydrophilicity. Finally, in-vitro analysis showed excellent antifouling behavior of the surface modified LDPE films.

Modification of Physico-Chemical Properties of Acryl-Coated Polypropylene Foils for Food Packaging by Reactive Particles from Oxygen Plasma

This investigation was focused on the influence of long-living neutral reactive oxygen species on the physico-chemical properties of acryl-coated polypropylene foils for food packaging. Reactive species were formed by passing molecular oxygen through a microwave discharge and leaking it to a processing chamber of a volume of 30 L, which was pumped by a rotary pump. The density of neutral O-atoms in the chamber was tuned by adjustment of both the effective pumping speed and the oxygen leak rate. The O-atom density was measured with a catalytic probe and was between 3 × 10¹⁸ and 5 × 10¹⁹ m⁻³. Commercial foils of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) coated with acrylic/ poly(vinylidene chloride) (AcPVDC) were mounted in the chamber and treated at room temperature by O atoms at various conditions, with the fluence between 1 × 10²¹ and 3 × 10²⁴ m⁻². The evolution of the surface wettability versus the fluence was determined by water contact angle (WCA) measurements, the formation of functional groups by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the morphology by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The WCA dropped from the initial 75° to approximately 40° after the fluence of a few 10²² m⁻² and remained unchanged thereafter, except for fluences above 10²⁴ m⁻², where the WCA dropped to approximately 30°. XPS and AFM results allowed for drawing correlations between the wettability, surface composition, and morphology.

In Vitro Response of Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMC) to Collagen Films Treated with Cold Plasma

The implantation of biomedical devices, including collagen-based implants, evokes an inflammatory response. Despite inflammation playing an important role in the early stages of wound healing, excessive and non-resolving inflammation may lead to the poor performance of biomaterial implants in some patients. Therefore, steps should be taken to control the level and duration of an inflammatory response. In this study, oxygen and nitrogen gas plasmas were employed to modify the surface of collagen film, with a view to modifying the surface properties of a substrate in order to induce changes to the inflammatory response, whilst maintaining the mechanical integrity of the underlying collagen film. The effects of cold plasma treatment and resultant changes to surface properties on the non-specific inflammatory response of the immune system was investigated in vitro in direct contact cell culture by the measurement of protein expression and cytokine production after one and four days of human peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) culture. The results indicated that compared to oxygen plasma, nitrogen plasma treatment produced an anti-inflammatory effect on the collagen film by reducing the initial activation of monocytes and macrophages, which led to a lower production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNFα, and higher production of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. This was attributed to the combination of the amino chemical group and the significant reduction in roughness associated with the introduction of the nitrogen plasma treatment, which had an effect on the levels of activation of the adherent cell population.

Plasma treatment switches the regime of wetting and floating of pepper seeds

Cold radiofrequency plasma treatment modified wetting and floating regimes of pepper seeds. The wetting regime of plasma-treated seeds was switched from the Wenzel-like partial wetting to the complete wetting. No hydrophobic recovery following the plasma treatment was registered. Environmental scanning electron microscopy of the fine structure of the (three-phase) triple line observed with virgin and plasma-treated seeds is reported. Plasma treatment promoted rapid sinking of pepper seeds placed on the water/air interface. Plasma treatment did not influence the surface topography of pepper seeds, while charged them electrically. Electrostatic repulsion of floating plasma-treated seeds was observed. The surface charge density was estimated from the data extracted from floating of charged seeds and independently with the electrostatic pendulum as σ≈1-2μC/m².

Quantitative assay for the colonization ability of heterogeneous bacteria on controlled nanopillar structures

The colonization ability of bacteria on biomaterial surfaces is influenced by the morphology of the bacteria and the nanotopography of the biomaterial. However, interactions between the bacterial morphology and nanotopography of biomaterials have not yet been completely elucidated. In this article, we quantitatively characterized the bacterial morphology to illuminate the integrated effects of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanopillar arrays on the colonization of bacteria cells with different shapes. Our results demonstrated that the interaction between interpillar spacing and the diameter of the bacterial cells impacted the number of bacterial cells that adhered to different PET substrates. The interpillar spacing of nanopillar arrays promotes bacterial adhesion in a definite range (<50 nm). However, further increasing the interpillar spacing inhibited the adhesion of bacteria to the nanopillar arrays. Moreover, the interpillar spacing also influenced the morphologies of adherent bacterial cells on the PET nanopillar arrays, which consequently facilitated bacterial adhesion to the nanopillar arrays. Our findings enhance the understanding of interactions between controlled nanotopography and bacterial colonization and provide an appropriate parameter for the design of antibacterial materials with nanotopography.
