Abstract
Two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (2D-cMOFs) have been adopted in electrochemical sensing applications owing to their superior electrical conductivity and large surface area. Here, we performed a density functional theory (DFT) analysis to study the synergistic impact of introducing a secondary organic ligand to the 2D-cMOF system. In this study, cobalt-hexaiminobenzene (Co-HIB) and cobalt-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene (Co-HITP) were combined to form a mixed ligand MOF named, Co-HIB-HITP. A DFT-level comparative study was designed to access stability, synergistic gas adsorption capability, and gas adsorption mechanism, important factors in sensing material development. A potential energy surface calculation predicted the structural stability of Co-HIB-HITP at larger interlayer displacements around 3.6-4.2 Å regions along the ab-plane than its unmixed states, Co-HIB and Co-HITP, indicating the tunability of the stacking mode using the mixed ligand system. Furthermore, the adsorption capabilities toward toxic gases, NH3, H2S, NO, and NO2, were investigated, and Co-HIB-HITP revealed superiority over unmixed 2D-cMOFs in H2S and NH3 gas adsorption energies by showing 158 and 170% improvement, respectively. Finally, an electron charge density analysis revealed Co-HIB-HITP's unique stacking mode and Co-metal density as contributing factors to its gas-selective synergy effect. The AB stacked layers and an intermediate metal density (5.25%) significantly improved the electrostatic interactions with H2S and NH3 by inducing a change in the chemical environment of the gas binding sites. This work proposes the dual-ligand 2D-cMOF as the promising design strategy for the next-generation sensing material.

Abstract
The adsorption of formaldehyde on the original carbon material is limited. Determining the synergistic adsorption of formaldehyde by different defects on the carbon material is necessary for comprehensively understanding the mechanism of formaldehyde adsorption on the surface of the carbon material. The synergistic effect of intrinsic defects and oxygen-containing functional groups on formaldehyde adsorption on the surface of carbon materials was simulated and verified by experiments. Based on the density functional theory, the adsorption of formaldehyde on different carbon materials was simulated by quantum chemistry. The synergistic adsorption mechanism was studied by energy decomposition analysis, IGMH, QTAIM, and charge transfer, and the binding energy of hydrogen bonds was estimated. The results showed that the energy for the adsorption of formaldehyde adsorbed by the carboxyl group on the vacancy defect was the highest, at -11.86 kcal/mol, the hydrogen bond binding energy was -9.05 kcal/mol, and a larger charge transfer was recorded. The mechanism of synergy was studied comprehensively, and the simulation results were verified at multiple scales. This study provides valuable insights into the effect of carboxyl groups on the adsorption of formaldehyde by activated carbon.

Abstract
The modifications of the electronic properties on carbon-doped boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) as a response to the adsorption of different nitro species were investigated in the framework of the density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. Calculations were performed using the SIESTA code. We found that the main response involved tuning the original magnetic behavior to a non-magnetic system when the molecule was chemisorbed on the carbon-doped BNNR. It was also revealed that some species could be dissociated through the adsorption process. Furthermore, the nitro species preferred to interact over nanosurfaces where dopants substituted the B sublattice of the carbon-doped BNNRs. Most importantly, the switch on the magnetic behavior offers the opportunity to apply these systems to fit novel technological applications.

Abstract
Catechol is a toxic biomolecule due to its low degradability to the ecosystem and unpredictable impact on human health. In this work, we have investigated the catechol sensing properties of pristine and transition metal (Ag, Au, Pd, and Ti) decoratedγ-graphyne (GY) systems by employing the density functional theory and first-principles molecular dynamics approach. Simulation results revealed that Pd and Ti atom is more suitable than Ag and Au atom for the decoration of the GY structure with a large charge transfer of 0.29e and 1.54e from valence d-orbitals of the Pd/Ti atom to the carbon-2p orbitals of GY. The GY + Ti system offers excellent electrochemical sensing towards catechol with charge donation of 0.14e from catechol O-p orbitals to Ti-d orbitals, while the catechol molecule is physisorbed to pristine GY with only 0.04e of charge transfer. There exists an energy barrier of 5.19 eV for the diffusion of the Ti atom, which prevents the system from metal-metal clustering. To verify the thermal stability of the sensing material, we have conducted the molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K. We have reported feasible recovery times of 2.05 × 10-5s and 4.7 × 102s for sensing substrate GY + Pd and GY + Ti, respectively, at 500 K of UV light.

Abstract
V-series nerve agents are very lethal to health and cause the inactivation of acetylcholinesterase which leads to neuromuscular paralysis and, finally, death. Therefore, rapid detection and elimination of V-series nerve agents are very important. Herein, we have carried out a theoretical investigation of carbon nitride quantum dots (C2N) as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of V-series nerve agents, including VX, VS, VE, VG, and VM. Adsorption of V-series nerve agents on C2N quantum dots is explored at M05-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. The level of theory chosen is quite adequate in systems describing non-bonding interactions. The adsorption behavior of nerve agents is characterized by interaction energy, non-covalent interaction (NCI), Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), electron density difference (EDD), and charge transfer analysis. The computed adsorption energies of the studied complexes are in the range of -12.93 to -17.81 kcal/mol, which indicates the nerve agents are physiosorbed onto C2N surface through non-covalent interactions. The non-covalent interactions between V-series and C2N are confirmed through NCI and QTAIM analysis. EDD analysis is carried out to understand electron density shifting, which is further validated by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. FMO analysis is used to estimate the changes in energy gap of C2N on complexation through HOMO-LUMO energies. These findings suggest that C2N surface is highly selective toward VX, and it might be a promising candidate for the detection of V-series nerve agents.

Abstract
We are investigated substitution effects of titanium heteroatoms on band gap, charge and local reactivity of C20-nTin heterofullerenes (n = 1-5), at different levels and basis sets. The C18Ti2-2 nanocage is considered as the most kinetically stable species with the widest band gap of 2.86 eV, in which two carbon atoms are substituted by two Ti atoms in equatorial position, individually. The charges on carbon atoms of C20 are roughly zero, while high positive charge (1.256) on the surface of C19Ti1 prompts this heteofullerene for hydrogen storage. The positive atomic charge on Ti atoms and negative atomic charge on their adjacent C atoms implies that these sites can be influenced more readily by nucleophilic and electrophilic regents, respectively. We examined the usefulness of local reactivity descriptors to predict the reactivity of Ti-C atomic sites on the external surface of the heterofullerenes. The properties determined include Fukui function (F.F.); f (k) and local softness s (k) on the surfaces of the investigated hollow cages. Geometry optimization results reveal that titanium atoms can be comfortably incorporated into the CC network of fullerene. It is most likely associated with the triple-coordination characteristic of titanium atoms, which can well match with the sp2-hybridized carbon bonding structure. According to the values of f (k) and s (k) for the C15Ti5 heterofullerene; the carbon atoms in the cap regions exhibit a different reactivity pattern than those in the equatorial portion of the heterofullerene. The titanium impurity can significantly improve the fullerene's surface reactivity and it allows controlling their surface properties. The band gap of C20-nTin …..(H2)n structures is decreased with increasing n. Hence, C15Ti5 is found as the best hydrogen adsorbent.

Abstract
Recent trends in 2D materials like graphene are focused on heteroatom doping in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice to tailor the desired properties for various lightweight atomic thin-layer derived portable devices, particularly in the field of gas sensors. To design such gas sensors, it is important to either discover new materials with enhanced properties or tailor the properties of existing materials via doping. Herein, we exploit the concept of codoping of heteroatoms in graphene for more improvements in gas sensing properties and demonstrate a boron- and nitrogen-codoped bilayer graphene-derived gas sensor for enhanced nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing applications, which may possibly be another alternative for an efficient sensing device. A well-known method of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) is employed for synthesizing the boron- and nitrogen-codoped bilayer graphene (BNGr). To validate the successful synthesis of BNGr, the Raman, XPS, and FESEM characterization techniques were performed. The Raman spectroscopy results validate the synthesis of graphene nanosheets, and moreover, the FESEM and XPS characterization confirms the codoping of nitrogen and boron in the graphene matrix. The gas sensing device was fabricated on a Si/SiO2 substrate with prepatterned gold electrodes. The proposed BNGr sensor unveils an ultrasensitive nature for NO2 at room temperature. A plausible NO2 gas sensing mechanism is explored via a comparative study of the experimental results through the density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the adsorbed gas molecules on doped heteroatom sites. Henceforth, the obtained results of NO2 sensing with the BNGr gas sensor offer new prospects for designing next-generation lightweight and ultrasensitive gas sensing devices.

Abstract
A rapid and noninvasive way to monitor the spread of COVID-19 is the detection of SARS-CoV-2 biomarkers from exhaled breath. Heptanal was identified as a key biomarker which was significantly elevated in the breath of SARS-CoV-2 patients. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of heptanal on pristine and transition metal (Pd, Pt, and Ag) doped graphene were studied based on density functional theory. The results indicated that heptanal was weakly adsorbed on pristine graphene with an adsorption energy of -0.015 eV while it was strongly adsorbed on Pd-, Pt-, and Ag-doped graphene with adsorption energies of -0.404, - 0.356, and -0.755 eV, respectively. Also, the electronic properties of Pd-, Pt-, and Ag-doped graphene changed more dramatically after heptanal adsorption than pristine graphene. The recovery times were estimated to be 6.13 × 10-6, 9.57 × 10-7, and 4.83 s for Pd-, Pt-, and Ag-doped graphene, respectively, showing that Pd-, Pt-, and Ag-doped graphene are suitable as reversible sensors. Our results conclude that Pd-, Pt-, and Ag-doped graphene are potential candidates as gas sensors for heptanal detection, and Ag-doped graphene is the most promising one.

Abstract
In this paper, the substitution effects of titanium heteroatom(s) on aromaticity, the average isotropic polarizability (< α >), the atomic polar tensor (APT) charge, the electrostatic potential (ESP) map, and the atoms in molecule (AIM) analysis along with infrared (IR) spectroscopy of C20 fullerene and its C20-nTin derivatives (n = 1-5) are probed via density functional theory (DFT). The nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) specify that substitution effect causes more aromaticity character of the optimized heterofullerenes than benzene molecule and higher APT charge distribution upon surfaces of them than pure cage. The highest negative and positive APT charge distribution on carbons of C15Ti5 and titanium substitutions of C16Ti4-2 implies that these sites can be attacked more readily by electrophilic and nucleophilic regents, respectively. We are very pleased to state that isolating the Ti-Ti single bonds by intermediacy of one or two C atoms is an applicable strategy for attaining the highest APT charge distribution on Ti atoms of C16Ti4-2 as suitable hydrogen storage. AIM analysis of the studied C20-nAln derivatives signifies the highest electron density (ρ (r)) of 0.294 a.u. and the highest positive Laplacian of electron density (∇2ρ (r)) of 0.190 a.u., at bond critical points (BCPs) of C-Ti bond in the most stable C19Ti1 species. This heterofullerene shows the lowest < α > between the studied structures. IR spectroscopy shows that exclusive of C16Ti4-1 (as transition state), the other optimized hollow cages (as global minima) have no imaginary frequency.

Abstract
In this survey, effects of titanium heteroatom(s) on structural parameters and thermodynamic stability of C20 fullerene and its C20-nTin derivatives (n = 1-5) are compared and contrasted, at DFT levels of theory. The results show that in going from C19Ti1 to C15Ti5, binding energy increases while absolute value heat of atomization decreases. According to vibrational frequency analysis, excepting C16Ti4-1, the other optimized structures give no imaginary frequency as true minima. The calculated binding energy of 887.12 kcal mol-1/atom displays C15Ti5 as the most thermodynamically stable heterofullerene. It has Cs symmetry and contains five titanium atoms alternatively in equatorial position. The substitutional doping of C20 fullerene leads to high Mülliken charge distribution upon the surfaces of the resulted heterofullerenes especially C19Ti1 as suitable hydrogen storage. The contour plots indicate the most negative electrostatic potential by red color for C atoms, whereas the most positive electrostatic potential by yellow color for Ti heteroatoms. The contour plots and multiwfn analysis exhibit charge transfer from titanium heteroatoms to the neighboring carbon atoms. Furthermore, the resulted electron density maps from multiwfn qualitatively confirm the contour plot's findings. The hydrogen adsorption is an endothermic process for C20 fullerene and exothermic process for C20-nTin heterofullerenes. Major criteria examined for thermodynamic stability; from C19Ti1 to C15Ti5, binding energy and hydrogen adsorption increase while heat of atomization decreases.

Thermodynamic stability, structural and electronic properties for the C 20-nAl n heterofullerenes (n = 1-5): a DFT study. J Mol Model 2021; 27:124. Abstract
DFT calculations are utilized to compare and contrast the substituted aluminum-heterofullerenes, C20-nAln (with n = 1-5) from thermodynamically view point, at density functional theory (DFT). Vibrational frequency analysis confirms that apart from C15Al5, all studied species are true minima. Considering the optimized geometries shows that all heterofullerenes are isolated-pentagon cage and none collapse to open deformed as segregated structure. The highest binding energy (5.56 eV/atom) and absolute heat of atomization (3323.68 kcal mol-1) reveals open-shell C19Al1 as the most stable thermodynamic heterofullerene. The most NICS (0) (isotropic and anisotropic parameters, -49.58 and - 46.47 ppm, respectively) introduces closed-shell C18Al2-2 as the most aromatic structure. Also, closed-shell C16Al4-1 heterofullerene emerges with the most polarizability (307.71 a.u.) and hence activity to interact with the surrounding polar species. The lowest and the highest charge transfer on the surfaces of C20 and C16Al4-2 without weak Al-Al bond, as the worst and the best candidate, respectively, provokes further investigation on impossible and possible application for hydrogen storage, respectively. We wish that the present survey will stimulate new experiments.

Abstract
The adsorption of acrolein (AC) onto the surface of B36 borophene nanosheet was studied using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). The structural and electronic properties were scrutinized by several quantum chemical parameters such as HOMO-LUMO gap, condensed Fukui function, molecular electrostatic potential (ESP), and the density of states (DOS). The non-covalent interactions (NCI) were explored by combined reduced density gradient (RDG-NCI) and energy decomposition analysis (EDA) techniques. It was found that the adsorption of acrolein on both convex and concave surfaces of borophene is mainly governed by van der Waals interactions. Our calculations showed that the adsorption energy is strengthened and favored when multiple acrolein molecules adsorb on the edge sides of borophene through their terminal carbonyl oxygen atom. Furthermore, the calculated HOMO-LUMO energy gaps were significantly reduced upon adsorption affecting, therefore, the electrical conductance of borophene. These results should be useful in designing acrolein sensors.

Abstract
It is well-known that the catalytic oxidation of CO molecule into CO2 is one of the most important strategies for the removing of this toxic gas from the atmosphere. In the present study, we investigate the reaction pathways and energy barriers for the oxidation of CO by O2 molecule over the Si-doped C3N nanosheet. According to our results, doping of C3N nanosheet with a Si atom could greatly modify its surface reactivity and electronic structure. Due to the large positive charge on the Si, this atom acts as the most active site to adsorb CO and O2 molecules. Three possible reaction mechanisms are studied for the CO oxidation, namely the Eley-Rideal (ER), Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) and new Eley-Rideal (NER). Comparing the activation energies indicates that the CO oxidation reaction proceeds via the LH mechanism over the title surface. The energy barrier needed to remove the activated oxygen atom (O*) from the Si atom is only 0.22 eV, which is most likely to overcome at room temperature. The results of this study may be useful to fabricate noble-metal free catalysts to remove toxic CO molecules from the atmosphere.

Abstract
A great concern exists about the lifetime, cost, low-temperature performance, and safety of Li-ion batteries. Na-ion batteries (NIB) are an alternative to the Li-ion batteries due to the wide availability of sodium, its low cost, and nontoxicity. Here, we examined the Na and Na+ adsorption on nanosheets of carbon (graphene), AlN, BN, and SiC to explore their potential use as an anode in NIBs. The interaction of atomic Na was found to play the main role in producing different nanosheet cell voltages. Unlike the graphene and SiC nanosheets, the lone pairs on the surface of the AlN and BN nanosheets hinder the Na adsorption and significantly increase the cell voltage. The order of magnitude of the nanosheet cell voltage as an anode in NIBs is as follows: AlN (1.49 V) > BN (1.46 V) > > C (0.69 V) > SiC (0.61 V). The AlN and BN nanosheets may be appropriate compounds for NIBs and their cell voltages are comparable with carbon nanotubes.

Abstract
The electronic sensitivity and adsorption behavior toward cyanogen halides (X–CN; X = F, Cl, and Br) of a B12N12 nanocluster were investigated by means of density functional theory calculations. The X-head of these molecules was predicted to interact weakly with the BN cluster because of the positive σ-hole on the electronic potential surface of halogens. The X–CN molecules interact somewhat strongly with the boron atoms of the cluster via the N-head, which is accompanied by a large charge transfer from the X–CN to the cluster. The change in enthalpy upon the adsorption process (at room temperature and 1 atm) is about −19.2, −23.4, and −30.5 kJ mol−1 for X = F, Cl, and Br, respectively. The LUMO level of the BN cluster is largely stabilized after the adsorption process, and the HOMO–LUMO gap is significantly decreased. Thus, the electrical conductivity of the cluster is increased, and an electrical signal is generated that can help to detect these molecules. By increasing the atomic number of X, the signal will increase, which makes the sensor selective for cyanogen halides. Also, it was indicated that the B12N12 nanocluster benefits from a short recovery time as a sensor.

Abstract
It has been recently indicated that the Li-ion batteries may be replaced by Na-ion batteries because of their low safety, high cost, and low-temperature performance, and lack of the Li mineral reserves. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we studied the potential application of B12N12 nanoclusters as anode in Na-ion batteries. Our calculations indicate that the adsorption energy of Na+ and Na are about -23.4 and -1.4kcal/mol, respectively, and the pristine BN cage to improve suffers from a low cell voltage (∼0.92V) as an anode in Na-ion batteries. We presented a strategy to increase the cell voltage and performance of Na-ion batteries. We showed that encapsulation of different halides (X=F-, Cl-, or Br-) into BN cage significantly increases the cell voltage. By increasing the atomic number of X, the Gibbs free energy change of cell becomes more negative and the cell voltage is increased up to 3.93V. The results are discussed based on the structural, energetic, frontier molecular orbital, charge transfer and electronic properties and compared with the performance of other nanostructured anodes.
