Sleep and aberrant eating behaviors in metabolic/bariatric presurgical candidates

BACKGROUND

Metabolic/bariatric surgery (MBS) is the most effective treatment for obesity, yet many factors influence successful individual weight loss. Among those are a variety of health behaviors that are assessed in the process of presurgical psychological evaluations, including eating pathology and sleep disturbance (both of which are relatively common among surgical candidates).

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to examine the relationship between sleep, binge eating, and night eating behaviors among individuals seeking MBS.

SETTING

Medical center and private psychological practice in Mississippi.

METHODS

Patients (N = 311) seeking presurgical psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery completed self-report measures. Of these, 83.0% were females and 70.7% of those with ethnicity data identified as White. Average body mass index (BMI) in the sample was 46.5 (standard deviation [SD] = 8.02). Correlations between variables were calculated and examination of the indirect effect of sleep disturbance on night eating as mediated by binge eating was conducted.

RESULTS

Sleep disturbance, binge eating, and night eating were significantly associated (b = .22-.45). Mediation analysis yielded a significant indirect effect, indicating that binge eating propensity explains the relationship between impaired sleep and night eating symptoms (b = .09, standard error [SE] = .03, confidence interval [CI]: .04-.18).

CONCLUSIONS

The observed relationship between sleep disturbance, night eating, and binge eating among bariatric candidates provides implications for future research and treatment approaches. Specifically, additional attention to sleep disturbance in the presurgical assessment process and consideration of sleep hygiene as a potential target for intervention may facilitate improvements in overall health, adjustment, and sustained weight loss.

Sleep health among US Navy afloat versus ashore personnel in the Millennium Cohort Study

Despite emerging public concern regarding the sleep health of military personnel over the past two decades, there remains a dearth of research examining sleep health among naval personnel assigned to sea duty. This study examined sleep metrics (e.g. fatigue, short sleep duration) and mental (e.g. posttraumatic stress disorder, depression) and physical health (e.g. type 2 diabetes, bodily pain) outcomes among naval personnel with recent sea duty (i.e. afloat) compared with naval personnel with recent shore duty (i.e. ashore). Prevalence ratios and mean differences for all outcomes were estimated and adjusted for demographic and military variables, and subsequently stratified by obesity. Sleep metrics were similar between afloat and ashore sailors except for short sleep duration, while sailors with recent shore duty had poorer physical health compared with those with recent sea duty. Stratified analyses suggested naval personnel with obesity had a higher proportion of nearly all adverse sleep-related health outcomes than those without obesity. Among participants without obesity, afloat personnel were more likely to report very short sleep (≤ 5 hours) and fewer hours of average nightly sleep, but were less likely to report physical health outcomes compared with ashore personnel. These findings suggest potential differences in sleep metrics and sleep-related health outcomes between afloat and ashore naval personnel. Additional research examining sleep outcomes using more objective measures is required to further investigate these findings, which may inform strategies to foster consolidated sleep despite environmental and occupational challenges in order to maintain high-performing naval personnel.

High-fat diet-induced obesity causes intestinal Th17/Treg imbalance that impairs the intestinal barrier and aggravates anxiety-like behavior in mice

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has been steadily increasing, and growing evidence suggests a link between high-fat diet (HFD), obesity, and ASD; however, the mechanism underlying this association remains elusive. Herein, BTBR T + tf/J (BTBR) inbred mice (a mouse ASD model) and C57Bl/6J (C57) mice were fed an HFD and normal diet (ND) for 8 weeks (groups: C57 + ND, C57 + HFD, BTBR + ND, and BTBR + HFD). Subsequently, mice underwent behavioral assessments, followed by intestinal tissues harvesting to detect expression of intestinal barrier proteins and inflammatory factors and immune cell numbers, and a correlation analysis. HFD-fed BTBR mice developed obesity, elevated blood sugar, significantly aggravated anxiety-like behaviors, impaired intestinal barrier function, intestinal inflammation with elevated CD4+IL17+ T (Th17) cells and reduced CD4+Foxp3+ T (Treg) cells, exhibiting reduced expression of proteins related to AMPK regulatory pathway (AMPK, p-AMPK, SIRT1). Correlation analysis revealed that the degree of behavioral anxiety, the degree of intestinal barrier damage, the severity of intestinal inflammation, and the degree of immune cell imbalance positively correlated with each other. Accordingly, HFD-induced obesity may cause intestinal Th17/Treg imbalance via the AMPK-SIRT1 pathway, leading to an inflammatory environment in the intestine, impairing intestinal barrier function, and ultimately aggravating anxiety-like behaviors in mice.

Metabolic Adverse Effects of Psychotropic Drug Therapy: A Systematic Review

This review aimed to investigate the metabolic alterations associated with psychopharmacological treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders, which can significantly impact patients' physical health and overall quality of life. The study utilized the PRISMA methodology and included cross-sectional, retrospective studies, and randomized clinical trials from reputable databases like SCOPUS, CLARIVATE, SCIENCE DIRECT, and PUBMED. Out of the 64 selected studies, various psychotropic drug classes were analyzed, including antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and antipsychotics. Among the antidepressants, such as amitriptyline, Imipramine, and clomipramine, weight gain, constipation, and cardiovascular effects were the most commonly reported metabolic adverse effects. SSRI antidepressants like Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram, Escitalopram, and Paroxetine exhibited a high prevalence of gastrointestinal and cardiac alterations. Regarding anticonvulsants, valproic acid and Fosphenytoin were associated with adverse reactions such as weight gain and disturbances in appetite and sleep patterns. As for antipsychotics, drugs like Clozapine, Olanzapine, and Risperidone were linked to weight gain, diabetes, and deterioration of the lipid profile. The findings of this review emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring for adverse effects, particularly considering that the metabolic changes caused by psychopharmacological medications may vary depending on the age of the patients. Future research should focus on conducting field studies to further expand knowledge on the metabolic effects of other commonly prescribed psychotropic drugs. Overall, the study highlights the significance of understanding and managing metabolic alterations induced by psychopharmacological treatment to enhance patient care and well-being.

Depression, Insomnia, and Obesity Among Post-9/11 Veterans: Eating Pathology as a Distinct Health Risk Behavior

INTRODUCTION

Understanding the interrelationships between co-occurring chronic health conditions and health behaviors is critical to developing interventions to successfully change multiple health behaviors and related comorbidities. The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of depression, insomnia, and their co-occurrence on risk of obesity and to examine the role of health risk behaviors as potential confounders of these relationships with an emphasis on eating pathologies.

METHODS

Iraq and Afghanistan conflict era veterans (n = 1,094, 51.2% women) who participated in the Women Veterans Cohort Study between July 2014 and September 2019 were categorized as having depression, insomnia, both, or neither condition. Logistic regression models were used to examine group differences in the risk of obesity. Health risk behaviors (i.e., eating pathology, physical activity, smoking, and hazardous drinking) were then assessed as potential confounders of the effects of depression and insomnia on the likelihood of obesity.

RESULTS

Obesity was most prevalent in individuals with co-occurring insomnia and depression (53.2%), followed by depression only (44.6%), insomnia only (38.5%), and neither condition (30.1%). Importantly, maladaptive eating behaviors confounded the depression-obesity association but not the insomnia-obesity association. There was no evidence that insufficient physical activity, smoking, or hazardous drinking confounded the effects of insomnia or depression on obesity.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings exemplify the complex relationships between multiple health conditions and behaviors that contribute to obesity. Elucidating these associations can enhance the precision with which interventions are tailored to efficiently allocate resources and reduce the severe health impact of obesity among veterans.

Psychological Health and Drugs: Data-Driven Discovery of Causes, Treatments, Effects, and Abuses

Mental health issues can have significant impacts on individuals and communities and hence on social sustainability. There are several challenges facing mental health treatment; however, more important is to remove the root causes of mental illnesses because doing so can help prevent mental health problems from occurring or recurring. This requires a holistic approach to understanding mental health issues that are missing from the existing research. Mental health should be understood in the context of social and environmental factors. More research and awareness are needed, as well as interventions to address root causes. The effectiveness and risks of medications should also be studied. This paper proposes a big data and machine learning-based approach for the automatic discovery of parameters related to mental health from Twitter data. The parameters are discovered from three different perspectives: Drugs and Treatments, Causes and Effects, and Drug Abuse. We used Twitter to gather 1,048,575 tweets in Arabic about psychological health in Saudi Arabia. We built a big data machine learning software tool for this work. A total of 52 parameters were discovered for all three perspectives. We defined six macro-parameters (Diseases and Disorders, Individual Factors, Social and Economic Factors, Treatment Options, Treatment Limitations, and Drug Abuse) to aggregate related parameters. We provide a comprehensive account of mental health, causes, medicines and treatments, mental health and drug effects, and drug abuse, as seen on Twitter, discussed by the public and health professionals. Moreover, we identify their associations with different drugs. The work will open new directions for a social media-based identification of drug use and abuse for mental health, as well as other micro and macro factors related to mental health. The methodology can be extended to other diseases and provides a potential for discovering evidence for forensics toxicology from social and digital media.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SC06 attenuated high-fat diet induced anxiety-like behavior and social withdrawal of male mice by improving antioxidant capacity, intestinal barrier function and modulating intestinal dysbiosis

Anxiety-like behavior and social withdrawal induced by obesity and oxidative stress are significant health concerns in contemporary society. Our previously study found that Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SC06 (SC06) decreased the body weight of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed male mice and protected porcine intestinal epithelial cells against oxidative stress. The present study further investigated the effect of SC06 on HFD-induced obesity, anxiety-like behavior and social withdrawal of male mice and explored its mechanism. Results showed that SC06 significantly decreased HFD-induced obesity as evidenced by the decreased body weight, weight of liver and epididymal fat. Meanwhile, SC06 attenuated the anxiety-like behavior of HFD-fed male mice as illustrated by the more exploration time in both the open arms of elevated plus maze and the central area of open field and the reversed their social withdrawal tested in the three-chamber social choice task. SC06 also reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration and normalized the mitochondrial morphology in the hippocampus. SC06 reduced the systemic inflammation and increased the expression of intestinal tight junctions (ZO-1 and Claudin1). Furthermore, SC06 also altered the microbial diversity and composition, and decreased Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio of HFD-fed male mice. These findings suggest SC06 attenuate HFD-induced anxiety-like behavior and social withdrawal of male mice by attenuating hippocampal oxidation stress, systemic inflammation, dysbiosis and improving intestinal barrier function.

FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM OF PATIENTS WITH ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE WITH OBESITY

OBJECTIVE

The aim: To determine the features of the functional characteristics of the cardiovascular system of patients with ischemic heart disease with obesity.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Materials and methods: Examined 130 persons (mostly military personnel and persons who were in the zone of active hostilities): 65 patients (the main group, 62,67±8,93 years) with coronary heart disease and obesity and 45 people of the control group (virtually healthy people, randomized by age and sex, 58,76±14,6 years).

RESULTS

Results: Coronary heart disease and obesity compared to healthy individuals probably the exceed all values of the functional state of the cardiovascular system: systolic blood pressure (152.72±14.61 and 119.03±7.94 mmHg; p<0.001); diastolic blood pressure (90.74±7.36 and 80.36±6.74 mmHg; p<0.001); end-diastolic volume (103.17±40.84 and 52.48±8.58 mm3; р<0.001); end-systolic volume (47.98±29.92 and 31.47±8.42 mm3; р=0.001); end-diastolic size (4.74±0.81 and 4.12 ± 0.27 cm; р<0.001); end-systolic size (3.34±0.76 and 3.17±0.59 cm; р=0.014).

CONCLUSION

Conclusions: The identified functional disorders of the heart in the comorbid course of coronary heart disease and obesity can be used for early diagnosis of cardiovascular complications in such patients and for the development of adequate therapeutic schemes.

Psychological Profiles of Treatment-Seeking Adults with Overweight and Obesity: A Cluster Analysis Approach

BACKGROUND

Overweight and obesity are associated with depression and well-being. Some psychological characteristics play a role in explaining well-being and depression in obesity and in identifying specific patient profiles. However, subtyping individuals with overweight/obesity based on variables like self-esteem or stress has not often been done. Therefore, our objective was to explore the psychological profiles of treatment-seeking individuals overweight or with obesity and to compare their depression and well-being.

METHODS

Data regarding eating self-efficacy, well-being, depression, physical hunger, self-esteem, body satisfaction and perceived stress in individuals with overweight/obesity were collected from the ESTEAM cohort. Hierarchical cluster analysis and mean comparisons were performed on female (n = 1427) and male samples (n = 310).

RESULTS

Three psychological profiles were identified in both samples. The "High psychological concerns" profile and the "Low psychological concerns" profile were identical in both samples. The third profile, "Bodily concerns", differed by sex and was characterized by appearance dissatisfaction for women and by appearance and eating concerns for men. The "Low psychological concerns" profile presented the highest well-being and the lowest depression scores in both samples.

DISCUSSION

The findings support the hypothesis of the heterogeneity of individuals with overweight and obesity and suggest sex-related therapeutic approaches.

Sleep quality and duration are associated with greater trait emotional intelligence

OBJECTIVES

Prior work suggests that short sleep and total sleep deprivation are associated with reduced trait Emotional Intelligence (trait EI) but not reduced ability Emotional Intelligence (ability EI). To expand this knowledge base, we investigated the role of habitual sleep quality on trait and ability EI above and beyond the known effects of recent sleep duration.

METHODS

A large sample, comprising 477 healthy adults completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue; trait EI), and Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Scale (MSCEIT; ability EI).

RESULTS

Bivariate correlation and multiple linear regression showed that recent sleep duration and PSQI sleep quality each independently predicted higher trait EI scores, including Emotionality, Self-Control, Sociability, and Well-being, but were unrelated to ability EI scores.

CONCLUSIONS

In this large community sample, recent sleep duration and habitual sleep quality both independently associated with self-perceived dispositional aspects of EI (ie, trait EI). In contrast, recent sleep duration and PSQI score were unrelated to more crystalized aspects of EI performance, which encompass the general fund of emotional information and the ability to understand and reason about emotional concepts (ie, ability EI). In sum, greater self-perceived sleep duration and quality was associated with subjective perceptions of better emotional functioning, but was unrelated to performance-based metrics of emotional reasoning.

Relationship between sleep duration and quality and glycated hemoglobin, body mass index, and self-reported health in Marshallese adults

OBJECTIVE

To document sleep duration and sleep quality among a sample of Marshallese adults and to examine if sleep duration and quality are associated with type 2 diabetes, body mass index (BMI), and self-reported health in the Marshallese population.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional analysis of a staff-administered survey.

SETTING

Thirty Marshallese churches in Arkansas and Oklahoma.

PARTICIPANTS

The study includes 378 Marshallese participants, 56.6% female, with a mean age of 42.4 years (±11.6). Recruitment was limited to participants who were considered overweight, with a BMI >25 kg/m².

MEASURES

Staff-administered surveys were used to collect data on sleep duration, sleep quality, and self-reported health. Clinical measures were collected by trained research personnel using standard tools and protocols. Kruskal-Wallis tests, Spearman's correlations, and nonparametric tests of trends were used to evaluate differences in HbA1c, BMIc, and self-reported health by sleep duration and quality. Multivariable analyses were used to test the associations, controlling for sociodemographic factors.

RESULTS

Fifty-four percent of the participants reported something other than normal sleep duration and 52.4% reported at least 1 night of difficult or interrupted sleep in the previous 2-week period. Longer sleep duration was associated with lower HbA1c and poorer sleep quality was associated with higher HbA1c. Poor sleep quality was associated with lower self-reported health. However, neither sleep duration nor quality was associated with BMI. The associations were found independent of sociodemographic factors.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to document sleep duration and sleep quality, as well as the first study to examine the relationship between sleep and HbA1c, BMI, and self-reported health in Marshallese adults with a BMI >25 kg/m². This research will be used to help develop sleep interventions to address type 2 diabetes health disparities in the Marshallese community.

Physical and Psychosocial Burden of Psoriatic Arthritis: Longitudinal Data From a Population-Based Study in Norway

OBJECTIVE

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) can have a significant impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Data on the timing of changes in the HRQoL of patients with PsA are limited. The present study was undertaken to explore associations between sleep disturbance, fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression, general health status, and satisfaction with life before and after a diagnosis of PsA compared to the general population.

METHODS

Patients diagnosed with PsA between the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT2 [1995-1997] and HUNT3 [2006-2008]) surveys were compared to the general population. The adjusted odds ratio (OR_adj ) with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) was estimated at both time points.

RESULTS

Among 36,507 individuals participating in both the HUNT2 and HUNT3 surveys, 160 were diagnosed with PsA between the surveys. The prevalence of sleep disturbances and fatigue was higher in PsA patients after diagnosis compared to the general population (OR_adj 2.24 [95% CI 1.55-3.25] and OR_adj 1.94 [95% CI 1.27-2.98], respectively). The prevalence of pain and poor health status were higher in patients with PsA compared with the general population even before PsA was diagnosed (OR_adj 2.81 [95% CI 1.96-4.02] and OR_adj 3.08 [95% CI 2.19-4.35], respectively) and increased after diagnosis of PsA (OR_adj 12.87 [95% CI 6.27-26.40] and OR_adj 5.63 [95% CI 3.99-7.95], respectively). For anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction, patients who developed PsA were comparable to the general population both before and after the diagnosis of PsA.

CONCLUSION

Compared to the general population, PsA patients reported a higher prevalence of pain and poorer health status before diagnosis. Increased prevalence of sleep disturbances and fatigue in PsA patients was only found after the PsA diagnosis, and no differences between patients with PsA and the control group were found for anxiety and depression.

Early Intervention in Psychosis: Effectiveness and Implementation of a Combined Exercise and Health Behavior Intervention Within Routine Care

Aim

Young people with psychosis have higher rates of obesity, premature cardiovascular disease, and death compared to non-psychotic peers in the general population due to changes in metabolic regulation linked to antipsychotic medication and adverse health risk behaviors. The aim of this paper is to outline the development, implementation, and evaluation of a combined 12-week exercise and health behavior intervention delivered as part of an Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) routine service, within the UK.

Methods

Participants (n = 27) completed a 12-week combined intervention program, engaging in weekly, 90-min sessions comprising a healthy behavior education session (45 min), followed by a facilitated exercise session (45 min). Anthropometric data from participants (n = 26) were collected at baseline, 12 weeks, and 12 months post-intervention. Health behaviors and clinical measurements were assessed at baseline and 12 months.

Results

Mean baseline data suggests participants were at an increased health risk on entry to the program, with elevated values in mean body mass index (BMI; 70% overweight/obese), waist circumference, resting heart rate, and triglycerides. Fifty percent reported smoking daily, 64% ate < 5 fruits/vegetables per day, and 52% of participants were prescribed highly obesogenic antipsychotic medications (i.e., Olanzapine). At 12 weeks and 12 months, no changes were observed in mean BMI, waist circumference or any other clinical variable (p > 0.05). At 12 months, participants reported a positive impact on health behaviors including improved diet, increased physical activity levels, and cessation of substance use (n = 2), alcohol use (n = 2), and smoking (n = 4). Focus groups captured participant experiences, engagement with and satisfaction with the program, including challenges/barriers to program adherence.

Conclusions

The 12-week exercise and health behaviors program supported participants to attenuate their physical health risk which was sustained at 12-month follow-up. Self-reported positive health behavior changes are likely to have contributed to the prevention of excessive weight gain in this high-risk period. The evaluation was designed to have validity for a "real world EIP setting" and reflect the complexity of delivery to this participant group. Evaluation findings influenced subsequent commissioning of the physical health intervention as an ongoing element of routine EIP care within the participant site.

Relationship between sleep duration and sociodemographic characteristics, mental health and chronic diseases in individuals aged from 18 to 85 years old in Guangdong province in China: a population-based cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Sleep is vital for maintaining individual's physical and mental health. Prior studies have reported close relationships between sleep duration and chronic diseases. However, in China, the prevalence of aberrant sleep duration and the associations between sleep duration and chronic conditions still merit studying in Guangdong province. This study aimed at examining the relationship between sleep duration and multiple dimensions of sociodemographic characteristics, mental health and chronic diseases in Guangdong province in China, with a large population-based data of individuals aged from 18 to 85 years old.

METHODS

This study aimed at analyzing the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the population in Guangdong province. Multistage stratified cluster sampling was applied for this study. 13,768 participants from Guangdong province were interviewed with standardized assessment tools, including Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). Basic socio-demographic information, mental health and chronic diseases information were collected. Self-reported sleep duration was classified as three types: short (< 7 h), normative (7-9 h) and long (≥9 h).

RESULTS

The mean sleep duration was 6.75 ± 1.11 h. Short sleepers had a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, including anemia (6.2%, p = 0.024), gout (2.8%, p = 0.010), hyperlipidemia (3.9%, p = 0.003) and low back pain (5.6%, p = 0.020) than other types of sleeper. Multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that short sleepers were more likely to have low income level, have depressive symptoms, be ex- or current drinkers and be overweight. Anemia, hyperlipidemia and low back pain were all risk factors for short sleep, while malignant tumor was risky for long sleep.

CONCLUSIONS

Low income level, drinking status, being overweight, and chronic conditions may be associated with aberrant sleep duration in Guangdong province general population. Short sleepers have a higher risk of suffering from anemia, hyperlipidemia, and low back pain, while long sleepers are more likely to have malignant tumor. Health professionals should value the sleep patterns in general health care and attach importance to conduct further epidemiologic surveys to explore the relationship between sleep duration and health.

Adaptive Filtering Improved Apnea Detection Performance Using Tracheal Sounds in Noisy Environment: A Simulation Study

Objective

Tracheal sounds were used to detect apnea on various occasions. However, ambient noises can contaminate tracheal sounds which result in poor performance of apnea detection. The objective of this paper was to apply the adaptive filtering (AF) algorithm to improve the quality of tracheal sounds and examine the accuracy of the apnea detection algorithm using tracheal sounds after AF.

Method

Tracheal sounds were acquired using a primary microphone encased in a plastic bell, and the ambient noises were collected using a reference microphone resting outside the plastic bell in quiet and noisy environments, respectively. Simultaneously, the flow pressure signals and thoracic and abdominal movement were obtained as the standard signals to determine apnea events. Then, the normalized least mean square (NLMS) AF algorithm was applied to the tracheal sounds mixed with noises. Finally, the algorithm of apnea detection was used to the tracheal sounds with AF and the tracheal sounds without AF. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy, and Cohen's kappa coefficient of apnea detection were calculated.

Results

Forty-six healthy subjects, aged 18-35 years and with BMI < 21.4, were included in the study. The apnea detection performance using tracheal sounds was as follows: in the quiet environment, the tracheal sounds without AF detected apnea with 97.2% sensitivity, 99.9% specificity, 99.8% PPV, 99.4% NPV, 99.5% accuracy, and 0.982 kappa coefficient. The tracheal sounds with AF detected apnea with 98.2% sensitivity, 99.9% specificity, 99.4% PPV, 99.6% NPV, 99.6% accuracy, and 0.985 kappa coefficient. While in the noisy environment, the tracheal sounds without AF detected apnea with 81.1% sensitivity, 96.9% specificity, 85.1% PPV, 96% NPV, 94.2% accuracy, and 0.795 kappa coefficient and the tracheal sounds with AF detected apnea with 91.5% sensitivity, 97.4% specificity, 88.4% PPV, 98.2% NPV, 96.4% accuracy, and 0.877 kappa coefficient.

Conclusion

The performance of apnea detection using tracheal sounds with the NLMS AF algorithm in the noisy environment proved to be accurate and reliable. The AF technology could be applied to the respiratory monitoring using tracheal sounds.
