Helicene-based chiroptical switches

Capturing electron-driven chiral dynamics in UV-excited molecules

Chiral molecules, used in applications such as enantioselective photocatalysis1, circularly polarized light detection2 and emission3 and molecular switches4,5, exist in two geometrical configurations that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. These so-called (R) and (S) enantiomers exhibit different physical and chemical properties when interacting with other chiral entities. Attosecond technology might enable influence over such interactions, given that it can probe and even direct electron motion within molecules on the intrinsic electronic timescale6 and thereby control reactivity7-9. Electron currents in photoexcited chiral molecules have indeed been predicted to enable enantiosensitive molecular orientation10, but electron-driven chiral dynamics in neutral molecules have not yet been demonstrated owing to the lack of ultrashort, non-ionizing and perturbative light pulses. Here we use time-resolved photoelectron circular dichroism (TR-PECD)11-15 with an unprecedented temporal resolution of 2.9 fs to map the coherent electronic motion initiated by ultraviolet (UV) excitation of neutral chiral molecules. We find that electronic beatings between Rydberg states lead to periodic modulations of the chiroptical response on the few-femtosecond timescale, showing a sign inversion in less than 10 fs. Calculations validate this and also confirm that the combination of the photoinduced chiral current with a circularly polarized probe pulse realizes an enantioselective filter of molecular orientations following photoionization. We anticipate that our approach will enable further investigations of ultrafast electron dynamics in chiral systems and reveal a route towards enantiosensitive charge-directed reactivity.

Crystallization-Induced Chirality Transfer in Conformationally Flexible Azahelicene Au(I) Complexes with Circularly Polarized Luminescence Activation

Flexible and twisted annulated π-systems exhibit numerous unique and desirable features, owing to their ability to display chirality. However, preventing their racemization due to the dynamic nature of their chirality remains a challenge. One promising approach to stabilize homochirality in such systems is chirality transfer from a chiral auxiliary to a moiety displaying dynamic chirality. Herein, we introduce a new approach for dynamic chirality stabilization in conformationally flexible azahelicene species via crystallization-induced intermolecular chirality transfer in Au(I) complexes featuring azahelicene (dibenzo[c,g]carbazole and benzo[c]carbazole) and enantio-pure chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands with a complementary tailored shape. Crystallization of these azahelicene Au(I) complexes not only suppresses the dynamic chirality of the dibenzocarbazole species but also stabilizes their homochirality through the intermolecular conjunction between the chiral NHC and dibenzocarbazole ligands. In the Au(I) benzocarbazole complexes, the intermolecular conjunction and chirality transfer in the crystals induce chirality in the initially achiral benzocarbazole ligand. Furthermore, the crystallization of the studied complexes activates their circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, which were suppressed in solution. Importantly, chirality transfer leads to significant CPL enhancement; the complexes that feature chirality transfer within the crystal structure exhibit luminescence dissymmetry factors 5 to 10 times higher than those of the complexes without chirality transfer.

Enantiomerization of five-membered-heterocycle-embedded helicenes: A DFT study

In this work, DFT theoretical calculations were employed to investigate the enantiomerization of helicenes embedded with five-membered heterocycles. The original benzene rings in the helicene backbone were replaced by heterocycles such as furan, thiophene, pyrrole, or phosphole to create [n]helicenes with n ranging from 4 to 7. The impact of the type, position, and number of heterocycles on the enantiomerization barrier was systematically evaluated. Notably, the enantiomerization barrier was found to be significantly dependent on the rotatory angle and the position of the heterocycles, particularly for [4, 5]helicenes. With less rotatory angle of heterocycle, the enantiomerization barrier of helicenes was revealed to be lower, while when the heterocycle was close to the central part of the helicene chain, the barrier was also lower. Furthermore, the number of thiophene rings also had a marked effect on enantiomerization, showing a decrease of the barrier with more thiophene rings placed on the helicenes backbone. We expect this work would deliver new perspective on the relative studies for the helicene conformational conversion.

Helitwistacenes-Combining Lateral and Longitudinal Helicity Results in Solvent-Induced Inversion of Circularly Polarized Light

Helicity is expressed differently in ortho- and para-fused acenes-helicenes and twistacenes, respectively. While the extent of helicity is constant in helicenes, it can be tuned in twistacenes, and the handedness of flexible twistacenes is often determined by more rigid helicenes. Here, we combine helicenes with rigid twistacenes consisting of a tunable degree of twisting, forming helitwistacenes. While the X-ray structures reveal that the connection does not affect the helicity of each moiety, their electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra are strongly affected by the helicity of the twistacene unit, resulting in solvent-induced sign inversion. ROESY NMR and TD-DFT calculations support this observation, which is explained by differences in the relative orientation of the helicene and twistacene moieties.

Near-Infrared, Organic Chiroptic Switch with High Dissymmetry Factors

Here we unveil a chiral molecular redox switch derived from PDI-based twistacenes─chPDI[2] that has the remarkable attributes of high-intensity and a broadband chiral response. This material exhibits facile, stable, and reversible multistate chiroptical switching behavior over a broad active wavelength range close to 700 nm, encompassing ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared regions. Upon reduction, chPDI[2] exhibits a substantial increase in the amplitude of its circular dichroic response, with an outstanding |ΔΔε| > 300 M-1 cm-1 and a high dissymmetry factor of 3 × 10-2 at 960 nm. DFT calculations suggest that the long wavelength CD signal for doubly reduced chPDI[2] originates from excitation of the PDI backbone to the π* orbital of the bridging alkene. Importantly, the dimer's molecular contortion facilitates ionic diffusion, enabling chiral switching in solid state films. The high dissymmetry factors and near-infrared response establish chPDI[2] as a unique chiroptic switch.

Mechanochemical Scholl Reaction on Phenylated Cyclopentadiene Core: One-Step Synthesis of Fluoreno[5]helicenes

In this study, we explore feasibility of the mechanochemical approach in the synthesis of tetrabenzofluorenes (fluoreno[5]helicenes). For this, commercially available phenylated cyclopentadiene precursors are subjected to the Scholl reaction in the solid state using FeCl3 as an oxidant and sodium chloride as the solid reaction medium. This ball milling process gave access to the 5-membered ring containing-helicenes in one synthetic step in high (95-96 %) isolated yields. The solution-phase reactions, however, were found to be moderate to low yielding in this regard (10-40 %).

Acid/Base-Triggered Photophysical and Chiroptical Switching in a Series of Helicenoid Compounds

A series of molecules that possess two quinolines, benzoquinolines, or phenanthrolines connected in a chiral fashion by a biaryl junction along with their water-soluble derivatives was developed and characterized. The influence of the structure on the basicity of the nitrogen atoms in two heterocycles was examined and the photophysical and chiroptical switching activity of the compounds upon protonation was studied both experimentally and computationally. The results demonstrated that changes in the electronic structure of the protonated vs. neutral species, promoting a bathochromic shift of dominant electronic transitions and alternation of their character from π-to-π* to charge-transfer-type, when additionally accompanied by the high structural flexibility of a system, leading to changes in conformational preferences upon proton binding, produce particularly pronounced modifications of the spectral properties in acidic medium. The latter combined with reversibility of the read-out make some of the molecules in this series very promising multifunctional pH probes.

Chiroptical regulation of macrocyclic arenes with flipping-induced inversion of planar chirality

Studies on various macrocyclic arenes have received increasing attention due to their straightforward syntheses, convenient derivatization, and unique complexation properties. Represented by pillar[n]arenes, several distinctive macrocyclic arenes have recently emerged with the following characteristics: they possess a pair of enantiomeric planar chiral conformations, and interconversion between these enantiomeric conformations can be achieved through the flipping of ring units. Complexation of a chiral guest with these macrocyclic arenes will lead to a shift of the equilibrium between the Rp and Sp conformers, leading to intriguing possibilities for chiral induction and sensing. By the introduction of bulky substituents on the rims, employing rotaxanation or pseudocatenation, planar chirality could be locked, enabling the enantiomeric separation of the chiral structures. The induced or separated chiral conformers/compounds exhibit significant chiroptical properties. These macrocyclic arenes, with flipping-induced inversion of planar chirality, demonstrated intriguing chiral induction dynamics and kinetics. In this featured review, we systematically summarize the progress in chiroptical induction/regulation of these macrocyclic arenes, particularly in the fields of chiral sensing, molecular machines, molecular recognition, and assembly.

Impact of Truncation on Optoelectronic Properties of Azaborole Helicenes

Herein, we report configurationally stable singly-truncated (ST) and structurally flexible doubly-truncated (DT) helically chiral compounds derived from azabora[7]helicenes by a hypothetical removal of a single or two C=C double bonds. The singly-truncated constitutional isomers were synthesized from either benzoisoquinoline (BIQ) or phenantherene building blocks and the corresponding biaryls in excellent yields to give azabora[5]helicenes with a pendant phenyl ring at a sterically hindered position. These systems highlight the electronic impact of the nitrogen donor substitution position. The compounds with a disrupted BIQ moiety (STN) possess remarkable photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 0.53 in the solid state and a blue emission in solution with dissymmetry factors of up to ca. 3×10-3 . Upon cooling to 79 K all compounds exhibit phosphorescence with lifetimes of up to ca. 0.5 s. A methyl complex of azabora[7]helicene showing excellent configurational stability was used as a chiral inducer embedded in an emissive polymer (F8BT) to produce circularly polarized organic light emitting diodes with an electroluminescence dissymmetry factor gEL of up to 0.54.

Enantiopure cycloplatinated pentahelicenic N-heterocyclic carbenic complexes that display long-lived circularly polarized phosphorescence

The preparation of the first enantiopure cycloplatinated complexes bearing a bidentate, helicenic N-heterocyclic carbene and a diketonate ancillary ligand is presented, along with their structural and spectroscopic characterization based on both experimental and computational studies. The systems exhibit long-lived circularly polarized phosphorescence in solution and in doped films at room temperature, and also in a frozen glass at 77 K, with dissymmetry factor g_lum values ≥10^-3 in the former and around 10^-2 in the latter.

Infinitene as two fused helicoidal trails of fused rings: evaluation of the magnetic behavior of [12]infinitene and anionic species displaying global aromaticity and antiaromaticity

The unique formation of an infinity-shaped carbon backbone made exclusively from fused benzene rings has recently been achieved. The structure of [12]infinitene can be viewed as two fused [6]helicene structures with a central crossover section, depicting a global aromatic behavior along with the overall structure, with deshielding regions along both helicoidal axes. In addition, the ¹³C-NMR characteristics are discussed. The formation of a cumulative region involving the shielding regions from the aromatic rings is depicted along with the overall aesthetically pleasant structural backbone, which is enhanced at the crossover section. For the evaluated dianionic counterpart, the structure shows a deshielding region above the fused-ring trail and a helicoidal shielding region, ascribed to a global antiaromatic counterpart. The aromaticity is recovered and enhanced at the tetranionic state. Thus, the neutral and tetranionic states are able to build up a long-ranged shielding region, given by the global aromatic behavior, with an enhanced shielding region at the center of the crossover section displaying π-π stacked rings.

[5]-Helistatins: Tubulin-Binding Helicenes with Antimitotic Activity

Helicenes are high interest synthetic targets with unique conjugated helical structures that have found important technological applications. Despite this interest, helicenes have had limited impact in chemical biology. Herein, we disclose a first-in-class antimitotic helicene, helistatin 1 (HA-1), where the helicene scaffold acts as a structural mimic of colchicine, a known antimitotic drug. The synthesis proceeds via sequential Pd-catalyzed coupling reactions and a π-Lewis acid cycloisomerization mediated by PtCl₂. HA-1 was found to block microtubule polymerization in both cell-free and live cell assays. Not only does this demonstrate the feasibility of using helicenes as bioactive scaffolds against protein targets, but also suggests wider potential for the use of helicenes as isosteres of biaryls or cis-stilbenes-themselves common drug and natural product scaffolds. Overall, this study further supports future opportunities for helicenes for a range of chemical biological applications.

Electrochemically Switchable Circularly Polarized Photoluminescence within Self-Assembled Conducting Polymer Helical Microfibers

Achieving electrically and/or electrochemically controlled circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPL) is challenging due to the non-electroactive characteristics of most chiral materials and the non-electrosensitive feature of materials' chiroptical signals. Here we found that the CPL of self-assembled conducting polyaniline (PANI) helical microfibers could be reversibly switched by applying an alternating electrical bias. The conducting polymer is not the fluorophore but can transfer its chirality to the coassembled aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescent molecules. The electrochemically switchable CPL is derived from the reversible transformation of the chirality of the polyaniline microfibers, which is probably due to the change in the molecular interchain distance upon doping/dedoping. Subsequently, we have demonstrated double-layer information encryption based on the electrochemically reversible CPL and conductance.

Ruthenium-Locked Helical Chirality: A Barrier of Inversion and Formation of an Asymmetric Macrocycle

Upon coordination to metal centers, tetradentate ligands based on the 6,6′-bis(2″-aminopyridyl)-2,2′-bipyridine (bapbpy) structure form helical chiral complexes due to the steric clash between the terminal pyridines of the ligand. For octahedral ruthenium(II) complexes, the two additional axial ligands bound to the metal center, when different, generate diastereotopic aromatic protons that can be distinguished by NMR. Based on these geometrical features, the inversion barrier of helical [Ru^II(L)(RR′SO)Cl]⁺ complexes, where L is a sterically hindered bapbpy derivative and RR′SO is a chiral or achiral sulfoxide ligand, was studied by variable-temperature ¹H NMR. The coalescence energies for the inversion of the helical chirality of [Ru(bapbpy)(DMSO)(Cl)]Cl and [Ru(bapbpy)(MTSO)(Cl)]Cl (where MTSO is (R)-methyl p-tolylsulfoxide) were found to be 43 and 44 kJ/mol, respectively. By contrast, in [Ru(biqbpy)(DMSO)(Cl)]Cl (biqbpy = 6,6′-bis(aminoquinolyl)-2,2′-bipyridine), increased strain caused by the larger terminal quinoline groups resulted in a coalescence temperature higher than 376 K, which pointed to an absence of helical chirality inversion at room temperature. Further increasing the steric strain by introducing methoxy groups ortho to the nitrogen atoms of the terminal pyridyl groups in bapbpy resulted in the serendipitous discovery of a ring-closing reaction that took place upon trying to make [Ru(OMe-bapbpy)(DMSO)Cl]⁺ (OMe-bapbpy = 6,6′-bis(6-methoxy-aminopyridyl)-2,2′-bipyridine). This reaction generated, in excellent yields, a chiral complex [Ru(L″)(DMSO)Cl]Cl, where L″ is an asymmetric tetrapyridyl macrocycle. This unexpected transformation appears to be specific to ruthenium(II) as macrocyclization did not occur upon coordination of the same ligand to palladium(II) or rhodium(III).

Ruthenium complexes based on the bapbpy ligand form helical chiral complexes due to the steric clash between their terminal pyridyl groups. The coalescence energy for the inversion of this helical chirality was 43 kJ/mol according to variable temperature NMR. Increasing the steric strain by replacing terminal pyridyl groups with quinolyl groups blocked helical interconversion, while introducing ortho-methoxy groups resulted in an unexpected ring-closing reaction, forming a dissymmetric macrocycle bound to ruthenium in excellent yields.

Synthesis of Aza[n]helicenes (n = 4-7) via Photocyclodehydrochlorination of 1-Chloro-N-aryl-2-naphthamides

A series of aza[n]helicenes (n = 4-7) was synthesized using a photocyclodehydrochlorination of 1-chloro-N-aryl-2-naphthamides as a general synthetic procedure introducing the nitrogen atom to the third ring of the helicene framework. The effect of the nitrogen presence in the helicene skeleton on the physicochemical properties of the prepared aza[n]helicenes was studied and compared to those of the parent carbo-analogues. The insertion of a nitrogen atom into the outer edge of the helicene molecule has a severe impact on certain physicochemical properties such as optical rotation, electrostatic potentials, and intermolecular interactions. On the other hand, some other properties such as UV/vis, fluorescence, and phosphorescence spectra remained almost unaffected when compared to the parent carbohelicenes. A nitrogen atom can be also used for further derivatization, which can lead to further modification of helicene properties, as manifested here in the fluorescence changes induced by protonation.

Helicity Modulation in NIR-Absorbing Porphyrin-Ryleneimides

Peripheral substitution of a π‐extended porphyrin with bulky groups produces a curved chromophore with four helical stereogenic units. The curvature and stereochemistry of such porphyrins can be controlled by varying the substituents, coordinated metal ions, and apical ligands. In particular, when the achiral saddle‐shaped free bases are treated with large metal ions, i.e., Cd^II or Hg^II, the resulting complexes convert to chiral propeller‐like configurations. X‐ray diffraction analyses show that apical coordination of a water molecule is sufficient to induce a notable bowl‐like distortion of the cadmium complex, which however retains its chiral structure. For phenyl‐ and tolyl‐substituted derivatives, the conversion is thermodynamically controlled, whereas complexes bearing bulky 4‐(tert‐butyl)phenyl groups transform into their chiral forms upon heating. In the latter case, the chiral Hg porphyrin was converted into the corresponding free base and other metal complexes without any loss of configurational purity, ultimately providing access to stable, enantiopure porphyrin propellers.

The synthesis and crystal structure of pH-sensitive fluorescent pyrene-based double aza- and diaza[4]helicenes

Novel pyrene-based double aza- and diaza[4]helicenes have been prepared through a five-step synthetic sequence in overall good yields. Commercially available 2,3-dihaloazines (2,3-dibromopyridine, 2,3-dichloropyrazine and 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline) were used as starting materials. The synthesis employs electrophile-induced cyclizations of ortho-alkynyl bihetaryls as the key steps, leading to the formation of a helical skeleton. To discern the effect of merging azine and pyrene moieties within a helical skeleton, the X-ray structures, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of the helicenes were investigated and compared with those of the parent [4]helicene, aza- and diaza[4]helicenes. It was found that the emission properties of the synthesized helicenes can be modulated as a function of pH. The basicity of pyrene-based double aza[4]helicenes was estimated by the direct fluorimetric titration method; the pK_a value was found to be equal to 1.4.

Broad-band Chiral Absorbance of Visible Light

The amplification of chiral absorbance and emission is a primary figure of merit for the design of chiral chromophores. However, for dyes to be practically relevant in chiroptical applications, they must also absorb and/or emit chiral light over broad wavelength ranges. We investigate the interplay between molecular symmetry and broad-band chiral absorbance in a series of [6]helicenes. We find that an asymmetric [6]helicene containing two distinct chromophores absorbs chiral light across a much wider wavelength range than the symmetric [6]helicenes investigated here. Chemically reducing the helicenes shifts the absorption edge of the ECD spectra into the near-infrared wavelength range while preserving broad chiral absorption, producing a [6]helicene that absorbs a single handedness of light across the entire visible wavelength range.

Chemical redox-induced chiroptical switching of supramolecular assemblies of viologens

A chiral supramolecular assembly exhibiting redox-induced changes in its chiroptical properties was prepared using viologen-modified glutamide (G-V²⁺) derivatives. Achiral viologen moieties in the G-V²⁺ assembly were chirally orientated by glutamide groups, affording a unique orange-colored solution, with a visible absorption band at around 470 nm, having electronic circular dichroism (CD) signals (molar ellipticity [θ] = 0.58 × 10⁵ deg cm² dmol⁻¹: absorption dissymmetry factors (g) = 5.2 × 10⁻³ at 512 nm). The G-V²⁺ could be reduced to its cation radical (G-V⁺˙) but retains its chiral assembly. After chemical reduction, the color change from orange to blueish violet, indicating an absorption band at approximately 560 nm, and the sign change of the CD signal from positive to negative ([θ] = −0.36 × 10⁵ deg cm² dmol⁻¹; g = −2.9 × 10⁻³ at 580 nm) were observed in water. Subsequent oxidation re-introduces the G-V²⁺ chiroptical behavior before reduction.

Chiral assemblies of viologen-modified glutamide derivatives exhibit a unique orange-color and CD signals by CT complexes of viologen groups and electro-responsive chiroptical switching behaviors in the visible region in water.

Chiral Distorted Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes Bearing a Nonagon-Embedded Carbohelicene

A new family of chiral saddle-helix hybrid nanographenes is reported. The first hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) analogues bearing a nine-membered carbocycle are presented. Furthermore, for the first time, π-extended carbo[n]helicenes containing a nine-membered ring as part of the helical moiety have been synthesized. The combination of a [5]helicene moiety and a nonagon ring in a single chiral motif induces a tremendous distortion from planarity into the nanographenic structures compared to other saddle-helix hybrids such as heptagon- and octagon-containing π-extended carbo[5]helicenes. In fact, the interplanar angle of the two terminal rings reaches the largest angle (134.8°) of a carbohelicene reported to date, thus being by far the most twisted helicene yet prepared. Photophysical properties evaluation showed improved absorption dissymmetry factors (|gabs |=4.2×10-3 ) in the new family of nonagon-containing π-extended carbo[5]helicenes.

An Ortho-Tetraphenylene-Based "Geländer" Architecture Consisting Exclusively of 52 sp2 -Hybridized C Atoms

A new type of "Geländer" molecule based on a ortho-tetraphenylene core is presented. The central para-quaterphenyl backbone is wrapped by a 4,4'-di((Z)-styryl)-1,1'-biphenyl banister, with its aryl rings covalently attached to all four phenyl rings of the backbone. The resulting helical chiral bicyclic architecture consists exclusively of sp2 -hybridized carbon atoms. The target structure was assembled by expanding the central ortho-tetraphenylene subunit with the required additional phenyl rings followed by a twofold macrocyclization. The first macrocyclization attempts based on a twofold McMurry coupling were successful but low yielding; the second strategy, profiting from olefin metathesis, provided satisfying yields. Hydrogenation of the olefins resulted in a saturated derivative of similar topology, thereby allowing the interdependence between saturation and physico-chemical properties to be studied. The target structures, including their solid-state structures, were fully characterized. The helical chiral bicycle was synthesized as a racemate and separated into pure enantiomers by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase. Comparison of recorded and simulated chiroptical properties allowed the enantiomers to be assigned.

A Family of Superhelicenes: Easily Tunable, Chiral Nanographenes by Merging Helicity with Planar π Systems

We designed a straightforward synthetic route towards a full-fledged family of π-extended helicenes: superhelicenes. They have two hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronenes (HBCs) in common that are connected via a central five-membered ring. By means of structurally altering this 5-membered ring, we realized a versatile library of molecular building blocks. Not only the superhelicene structure, but also their features are tuned with ease. In-depth physico-chemical characterizations served as a proof of concept thereof. The superhelicene enantiomers were separated, their circular dichroism was measured in preliminary studies and concluded with an enantiomeric assignment. Our work was rounded-off by crystal structure analyses. Mixed stacks of M- and P-isomers led to twisted molecular wires. Using such stacks, charge-carrier mobilities were calculated, giving reason to expect outstanding hole transporting properties.

Heterohelicenes through 1,3-Dipolar Cycloaddition of Sydnones with Arynes: Synthesis, Origins of Selectivity, and Application to pH-Triggered Chiroptical Switch with CPL Sign Reversal

Regioselective access to heterohelicenes through the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of sydnones with arynes is described. Novel access to sydnones and poly(hetero)aromatic aryne precursors allowed the introduction of chemical diversity over multiple positions of the helical scaffolds. The origins of the unconventional regioselectivity during the cycloaddition steps was systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, unveiling the key features that control this reactivity, namely, face-to-face (π···π) or edge-to-face (C-H···π) interactions, primary orbital interactions and distortion from coplanarity in the transition structures (TSs) of the transformation. From the library of 24 derivatives synthesized, a pyridyl containing derivative displayed reversible, red-shifted, pH-triggered chiroptical switching properties, with CPL-sign reversal. It is found that protonation of the helicene causes a change of the angle between the electric and magnetic dipole moments related to the S₁ → S₀ transition, resulting in this rare case of reversible CPL sign inversion upon application of an external stimulus.

Synthesis and Properties of Spiro-double Sila[7]helicene: The LUMO Spiro-conjugation

A double helicene with a spiro-Si linker (4) was synthesized by four successive nucleophilic substitutions on SiCl₄ . Its (P,P), (M,M) and (P,M) isomers were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis. Due to the central spirosilabi[fluorene] moiety, the two helicene units in 4 are symmetrically and nearly perpendicularly arranged. (P,P)-4 and (M,M)-4 exhibit unique optical properties attributable to the LUMO spiro-conjugation between the two sila[7]helicene units.

Synthesis and Properties of Partially Saturated Fluorenyl-Derived [n]Helicenes Featuring an Overcrowded Alkene

The straightforward, multigram-scale synthesis of the partially saturated H₆ -fluoreno[n]helicenes (n=5 or 7) featuring a central, overcrowded alkene is described. The key cyclization step was based on an intramolecular McMurry reaction from the corresponding 1,5-diketones. Chiral stationary phase HPLC analysis and isomer separation indicate that each helicenic compound is constituted of three diastereoisomers at room temperature, i. e. the configurationally stable (R,R,P)/(S,S,M) pair of enantiomers and an apparently achiral compound resulting from the rapid interconversion between the (R,S,P) and (S,R,M) enantiomers. The partially saturated H₆ -fluoreno[n]helicenes are oxidatively aromatized to give an efficient access to the corresponding fluoreno[n]helicenes. The chiroptical properties (vibrational and electronic circular dichroism) of the chiral, enantiopure compounds have been measured and analyzed by quantum-chemical calculations, confirming their helicoidal nature.

Synthesis, Structure, and Chiroptical Properties of Indolo- and Pyridopyrrolo-Carbazole-Based C2 -Symmetric Azahelicenes

Treatment of 11,12-bis(1,1'-biphenyl-3-yl or 6-phenylpyridin-2-yl)-substituted 11,12-dihydro-indolo[2,3-a]carbazole with an oxidizing system of Pd(II)/Ag(I) induced effective double dehydrogenative cyclization to afford the corresponding π-extended azahelicenes. The optical resolutions were readily achieved by a preparative chiral HPLC. It was found that the pyridopyrrolo-carbazole-based azahelicene that contains four nitrogen atoms exhibits ca. 6 times larger dissymmetry factors both in circularly dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), |g_CD | and |g_CPL | values being 1.1×10^-2 and 4.4×10^-3 , respectively, as compared with the parent indolocarbazole-based azahelicene. Theoretical calculations at the RI-CC2 level were employed to rationalize the observed enhanced chiroptical responses. The (chir)optical properties of the former helicene was further tuned by a protonation leading to remarkable red-shift with a considerable enhancement of the |g_CPL | value.

Hybrids of cationic [4]helicene and N-heterocyclic carbene as ligands for complexes exhibiting (chir)optical properties in the far red spectral window

Synthesis, electronic and structural properties of a chiral NHC bearing a N-bonded cationic [4]helicene moiety are reported. This ligand is used to construct Au^I, Au^III and Rh^I complexes exhibiting far-red (chir)optical properties regardless of the metal.

Chiral Near-Infrared Fluorophores by Self-Promoted Oxidative Coupling of Cationic Helicenes with Amines/Enamines

In one pot, tertiary alkyl amines are oxidized to enamines by cationic dioxa[6]helicene, which further reacts as electrophile and oxidant to form mono or bis donor-π-acceptor coupling products. This original and convergent synthetic approach provides a strong extension of conjugation yielding chromophores that absorb intensively in far-red or NIR domains (λ_max up to 791 nm) and fluoresce in the NIR as well (λ_max up to 887 nm). Intense ECD properties around 790 nm with a |Δϵ| value up to 60 M^-1  cm^-1 are observed.

One-Step Simultaneous Synthesis of Circularly Polarized Luminescent Multiple Helicenes Using a Chrysene Framework

A series of multiple helicenes was simultaneously synthesized in one step by intramolecular cyclization of a single chrysene derivative containing two 2-[(4-alkoxyphenyl)ethynyl]phenyl units accompanied by rearrangements of the aryl pendants. The electrophile-induced double cyclization with or without aryl migrations proceeded efficiently under acidic conditions to afford annulative π-extension of the chrysene units and produced quadruple (QH-2), triple (TH-2), and double (DH-2) helicenes containing [4]- and/or [5]helicene frameworks with dynamic and/or static helicene chirality in one step. Three multiple helicenes' structures were determined by X-ray crystallography and/or density functional theory calculations. The multiple TH-2 and DH-2 helicenes were separated into enantiomers because of the stable one and two [5]helicene moieties, respectively, and showed intense circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Although QH-2, which comprises four [4]helicene subunits, was not resolved into enantiomers, the TH-2 enantiomers were further separated into a pair of diastereomers at low temperature resulting from their substituted [4]helicene chirality.

Octagon-Embedded Carbohelicene as a Chiral Motif for Circularly Polarized Luminescence Emission of Saddle-Helix Nanographenes

We report a new family of hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-based helical nanographenes incorporating π-extended carbo[5]helicenes bearing an octagonal carbocycle. This family represents a new kind of highly distorted saddle-helix hybrid nanographenes. For the first time, the eight-membered ring becomes a constituent of both a carbo[5]helicene and a HBC and thus, the negative curvature is responsible for twisting both units. This novel chiral motif, namely, oct-[5]helicene results in the largest torsion angle recorded so far for a carbo[5]helicene (θ=79.5°), as it has been suggested by DFT-calculations and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Consequently, the barriers of isomerization become exceptionally high for a [5]helicene unsubstituted in the fjord region since neither racemization nor decomposition were observed at 200 °C for 1 or 3 during 5 h. Therefore, racemic resolutions allowed subsequent chiroptical studies showing the ECD and CPL responses of this novel family of chiral nanographenes.

Synthesis, crystal structures and properties of carbazole-based [6]helicenes fused with an azine ring

Novel carbazole-based [6]helicenes fused with an azine ring (pyridine, pyrazine or quinoxaline) have been prepared through a five-step synthetic sequence in good overall yields. Commercially available 2,3-dihaloazines were used as starting materials. To discern the effect of merging an azine moiety within a helical skeleton, the X-ray structures, UV–vis absorption and fluorescence spectra of the helicenes were investigated and compared to that of the parent carbazole-based [6]helicene (7H-phenanthro[3,4-c]carbazole).

Light-mediated chiroptical switching of an achiral foldamer host in presence of a carbohydrate guest

A photoresponsive diarylethene was incorporated in an achiral helical foldamer container. A carbohydrate guest was found to induce opposite handedness upon binding to the open and closed forms of the diarylethene-containing foldamer, thus enabling chiroptical switching of an achiral host mediated by a chiral guest.
