Almost a century of oblivion: Integrative taxonomy allows the resurrection of the longnose skate Zearaja brevicaudata (Marini, 1933) (Rajiformes; Rajidae)

Life-history traits of an exploited skate: The short-tail yellownose skate Zearaja brevicaudata (Chondrichthyes: Rajiformes)

The short-tail yellownose skate, Zearaja brevicaudata, occurs off southern Brazil and along the Argentine continental shelf, including waters surrounding the Islas Malvinas and the upper slope, and is very frequently caught by trawl fisheries throughout its range. The age, growth, and maturity of Z. brevicaudata were investigated using 204 individuals collected by commercial fishing vessels from northern Argentina, between March 2016 and September 2019. Age was determined on a sample comprising vertebrae from 151 individuals, 60 males, ranging in size from 391 to 956 mm total length (TL), and 91 females, ranging in size from 324 to 1060 mm TL. Maximum ages determined for males and females were 22 and 29 years, respectively. A Bayesian framework was employed with a set of three candidate models to estimate growth parameters (von Bertalanffy, Gompertz, and Logistic). The von Bertalanffy model had the best fit, and the sexes showed undistinguishable growth parameters. For sexes combined, derived growth mean parameters (± S.D.) were L∞ = 1081 mm ± 64.34 mm, k = 0.09 ± 0.01 years-1, and L0 = 248 mm ± 23.52 mm. The age at maturity was estimated at 13.15 and 14.66 years for males and females, respectively.

Tapeworms (Platyhelminthes, Cestoda) from marine chondrichthyans of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, and the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic islands: a checklist

A parasite-host list of cestodes parasitizing chondrichthyans in the Southwest Atlantic off Argentina and surrounding waters of Antarctica is compiled based on the available literature. The list is based on published descriptions and redescriptions of species, and newly collected worms during the current study. A total of 57 valid species belonging to 28 genera of the orders Cathetocephalidea, Diphyllidea, Gyrocotylidea, Lecanicephalidea, Onchoproteocephalidea, Phyllobothriidea, Rhinebothriidea, "Tetraphyllidea", and Trypanorhyncha is listed. Information on hosts, localities, specimens in collections and comments on tapeworms are also included. A host-parasite list including chimaeras (1 order, 1 genus), batoids (4 orders, 10 genera), and sharks (3 orders, 5 genera) is provided. Tapeworm diversity, distribution range, and host associations are discussed. The cestodes orders Phyllobothriidea and Rhinebothriidea exhibit the highest species richness, with 13 and 12 species, respectively. Onchoproteocephalideans and rhinebothriideans have the broadest geographic distribution in the study area. Regarding hosts, arhynchobatid skates are the group most frequently associated with cestodes. However, further collecting efforts are necessary to understand whether this data reflect the real diversity and host association of these parasites or is a result of a bias in sampling.

Morphology and glandular composition of the myzorhynchus and the remnant apical organ in adult cestodes of the order Rhinebothriidea from batoids off Argentina

The main objective of this study was to analyze the function of the myzorhynchus and remnant apical organ of adult cestodes in the order Rhinebothriidea. Several features of these structures were analyzed in 12 species belonging to six genera and two families. In particular, the glandular composition of the myzorhynchus of four species from Echeneibothriidae (i.e., Notomegarhynchus navonae and three species of Echeneibothrium) was studied using histochemical techniques and/or transmission electron microscopy. In addition, the presence of a remnant apical organ and its glandular composition were analized in six species of Rhinebothriidae and in two species of Semiorbiseptum, whose familial assignment is uncertain. We also evaluated the importance of these characters for diagnosis. The same type of gland cell was found in the myzorhynchus of Echeneibothrium species and in the remnant apical organ of Semiorbiseptum species. These gland cells were Coomassie brilliant blue-positive, periodic acid Schiff-positive and Alcian blue-negative, consistent with a glycoprotein secretion possibly involved in adhesion to the host mucosa and proteolysis. The type of gland cells found in the myzorhynchus of N. navonae were Coomassie brilliant blue-negative, periodic acid Schiff-positive and Alcian blue-positive, consistent with the production of adhesive and protective substances. The type of gland cells in the myzorhynchus and in the remnant apical organ could be a useful character for the generic diagnosis of Echeneibothrium and Semiorbiseptum, respectively. A remnant apical organ was only found in Semiorbiseptum, with its presence/absence being important as a diagnostic character at the generic level for Semiorbiseptum, Scalithrium, and Rhinebothroides. A secondary objective was to characterize the microthrix pattern of the myzorhynchus of N. navonae. An extended distribution of spinitriches was detected, which may allow a better adhesion of this large species to the host mucosa, as the main function of spinitriches is presumably that of adhesion.

Molecular Taxonomy and Diversification of Atlantic Skates (Chondrichthyes, Rajiformes): Adding More Pieces to the Puzzle of Their Evolutionary History

Conservation and long-term management plans of marine species need to be based upon the universally recognized key-feature of species identity. This important assignment is particularly challenging in skates (Rajiformes) in which the phenotypic similarity between some taxa and the individual variability in others, hampers accurate species identification. Here, 432 individual skate samples collected from four major ocean areas of the Atlantic were barcoded and taxonomically analysed. A BOLD project ELASMO ATL was implemented with the aim of establishing a new fully available and well curated barcode library containing both biological and molecular information. The evolutionary histories of the 38 skate taxa were estimated with two concatenated mitochondrial markers (COI and NADH2) through Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference. New evolutionary lineages within the genus Raja were discovered off Angola, where paleogeographic history coupled with oceanographic discontinuities could have contributed to the establishment of isolated refugia, playing a fundamental role among skates' speciation events. These data successfully resolved many taxonomic ambiguities, identified cryptic diversity within valid species and demonstrated a highly cohesive monophyletic clustering among the order, laying the background for further inference of evolutionary patterns suitable for addressing management and conservation issues.

Integrative taxonomy identifies a new stingray species of the genus Hypanus Rafinesque, 1818 (Dasyatidae, Myliobatiformes), from the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic

An integrative approach by the congruence of genetics, morphology and ecological niche modelling (ENM) was used to delimit a new species of Hypanus (Rafinesque, 1818), a recently resurrected genus of marine stingrays comprising eight species, five of which occur in the western Atlantic. The species with the widest distribution, Hypanus americanus (Hildebrand and Schroeder, 1928), from the northeastern coast of the United States to southeastern Brazil, was demonstrated to be paraphyletic based on protein-coding mitochondrial genome analyses. This data set also indicates that the genetic distance between the new species Hypanus berthalutzae sp. nov. and its three closely related species (H. americanus, H. longus and H. rudis) varies from 0.82% to 3.14%. In addition, Bayesian Analysis of Population Similarity using the mitochondrial gene mt-nd2 supports the separation of H. berthalutzae sp. nov. (southwestern Atlantic) from its sister species H. rudis (eastern Atlantic). Similarly, morphological and morphometric analyses corroborated four morphotypes within the H. americanus species group and indicated the ventral caudal fold height and length and interspiracular and interorbital lengths as useful measurements to distinguish among them. Claspers of adult males also exhibit morphological differences among species. The ENM agreed with molecular and morphological analyses and delimits the distribution of H. berthalutzae sp. nov. to shallow areas close to shore along the Brazilian coast, from the mouth of the Amazon River to São Paulo State, including the northeastern oceanic islands, suggesting that the great outflow of fresh water and sediments and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge might act as barriers. The integration of these data to describe a new species provides information relevant to their conservation status, because all species of the H. americanus species group are under the "data-deficient" status.

Two new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 (Cestoda: Onchoproteocephalidea) from rajiform batoids off Argentina

Two new species of Acanthobothrium Blanchard, 1848 were collected from rajiform batoids along the coast of Argentina. They are Acanthobothrium carolinae sp. n. from Bathyraja magellanica (Philippi) and Acanthobothrium domingae sp. n. from Dipturus brevicaudatus (Marini). Both belong to category 1 and 2 because their total length is lower than 15 mm, they have fewer than 50 proglottids, fewer than 80 testes and a symmetric or asymmetric ovary. Acanthobothrium carolinae sp. n. differs from all congeners by the following combination of features: proglottid apolysis, hook morphology, microthrix pattern on the cephalic peduncle and distribution of the vitelline follicles. Acanthobothrium domingae sp. n. is unique in the combination of proglottid apolysis, total length, number of proglottids, hook and septal morphology, microthrix pattern on the cephalic peduncle, number and distribution of testes, cirrus sac length, distribution of the vitelline follicles and genital pore position. The discovery of these species increases the number of species of Acanthobothrium parasitising rajiform batoids off Argentina from one to three. All three species have a unique pattern of distribution of the gladiate spinitriches along the length of the cephalic peduncle, i.e., gladiate spinitriches being interrupted in a medial line both dorsally and ventrally.
