Language-like efficiency and structure in house finch song

Communication needs to be complex enough to be functional while minimizing learning and production costs. Recent work suggests that the vocalizations and gestures of some songbirds, cetaceans and great apes may conform to linguistic laws that reflect this trade-off between efficiency and complexity. In studies of non-human communication, though, clustering signals into types cannot be done a priori, and decisions about the appropriate grain of analysis may affect statistical signals in the data. The aim of this study was to assess the evidence for language-like efficiency and structure in house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) song across three levels of granularity in syllable clustering. The results show strong evidence for Zipf's rank-frequency law, Zipf's law of abbreviation and Menzerath's law. Additional analyses show that house finch songs have small-world structure, thought to reflect systematic structure in syntax, and the mutual information decay of sequences is consistent with a combination of Markovian and hierarchical processes. These statistical patterns are robust across three levels of granularity in syllable clustering, pointing to a limited form of scale invariance. In sum, it appears that house finch song has been shaped by pressure for efficiency, possibly to offset the costs of female preferences for complexity.

BDNF enhances electrophysiological activity and excitatory synaptic transmission of RA projection neurons in adult male zebra finches

The singing of songbirds is a complex vocal behavior. It was reported that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key neurotrophic factor involved in neuronal survival and activity, plays an important role in regulation of songbirds' song behavior. In all song-related nuclei, the electrophysiological activity of robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA) in the forebrain of songbirds is directly related to birdsong output. Whether BDNF regulates the electrophysiological activity and synaptic transmission of RA causing the change of song behavior need be further explored. In this study, the effects of BDNF on the electrophysiological activity and excitatory synaptic transmission of RA projection neurons (PNs) in adult male zebra finches were investigated using whole-cell patch clamp recordings in vitro. Our results showed that BDNF increased the firing of evoked action potentials in RA PNs and decreased the membrane input resistance and membrane time constant of RA PNs, indicating that BDNF can promote RA PNs excitability by reducing membrane input resistance and membrane time constant. Meanwhile, BDNF increased the frequency rather than amplitude of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs) in RA PNs. Moreover, the effects of BDNF on the excitability, intrinsic membrane properties and mEPSCs of RA PNs were blocked by its receptor TrkB antagonist K252a. These results indicate that BDNF via TrkB enhances the excitability and excitatory synaptic transmission of RA PNs in adult male songbirds through presynaptic mechanisms, suggesting a possible cellular mechanism by which BDNF regulates song behavior.

Efficiency fosters cumulative culture across species

Recent studies in several taxa have demonstrated that animal culture can evolve to become more efficient in various contexts ranging from tool use to route learning and migration. Under recent definitions, such increases in efficiency might satisfy the core criteria of cumulative cultural evolution (CCE). However, there is not yet a satisfying consensus on the precise definition of efficiency, CCE or the link between efficiency and more complex, extended forms of CCE considered uniquely human. To bring clarity to this wider discussion of CCE, we develop the concept of efficiency by (i) reviewing recent potential evidence for CCE in animals, and (ii) clarifying a useful definition of efficiency by synthesizing perspectives found within the literature, including animal studies and the wider iterated learning literature. Finally, (iii) we discuss what factors might impinge on the informational bottleneck of social transmission, and argue that this provides pressure for learnable behaviours across species. We conclude that framing CCE in terms of efficiency casts complexity in a new light, as learnable behaviours are a requirement for the evolution of complexity. Understanding how efficiency greases the ratchet of cumulative culture provides a better appreciation of how similar cultural evolution can be between taxonomically diverse species-a case for continuity across the animal kingdom. Linguistic laws in biology

Linguistic laws, the common statistical patterns of human language, have been investigated by quantitative linguists for nearly a century. Recently, biologists from a range of disciplines have started to explore the prevalence of these laws beyond language, finding patterns consistent with linguistic laws across multiple levels of biological organisation, from molecular (genomes, genes, and proteins) to organismal (animal behaviour) to ecological (populations and ecosystems). We propose a new conceptual framework for the study of linguistic laws in biology, comprising and integrating distinct levels of analysis, from description to prediction to theory building. Adopting this framework will provide critical new insights into the fundamental rules of organisation underpinning natural systems, unifying linguistic laws and core theory in biology.
