Abstract
Self-injurious behavior is a debilitating characteristic that is highly prevalent in autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. In these populations, self-injury has typically been interpreted in relation to behavioral reinforcement and/or sensory stimulation. However, self-injury is also commonly exhibited by people with a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, where it is typically described in relation to emotional regulation and the presence or absence of suicidal ideation. Interestingly, self-injury has also been documented in many non-human animal species, especially when exposed to early environmental deprivation, isolation, and distress. Despite the propensity of animals to self-injure under adverse conditions, animal models of self-injury have not been the focus of much research, and translation of the data from these models has largely been limited to autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. This review summarizes evidence that common biological and environmental mechanisms may contribute to vulnerability for self-injury in neurodevelopmental disorders, psychiatric disorders, and distressed animals, and that investigations using animal models may be highly beneficial when considering self-injury as a behavioral phenotype that exists across diagnostic categories. Investigations using animal models have revealed that individual differences in stress responses and anxiety-related behavior contribute to vulnerability for self-injury. Animal models have implicated dysregulation of monoaminergic, glutamatergic, and other neurotransmitter systems in expression of self-injury, and these models have suggested neural targets for pharmacotherapy that have potential relevance for diverse clinical populations.

Abstract
For pet chinchillas, limited data are available on husbandry and the human-animal relationship despite their impact on health, behavior, and welfare. We conducted an online survey with pet chinchilla caretakers (n = 336), targeting husbandry practices, health, behavioral indicators of welfare, and human-chinchilla relationships. We further investigated associations between caretakers' perceptions of stress in their chinchillas and emotional closeness to their animals. Basic needs such as keeping with conspecifics, constant access to water and hay, or offering dust baths were mostly fulfilled. Potential welfare issues included individual keeping (14.3%), undersized cages/enclosures (reported by 27.6% of the Austrian respondents), and suffering from a disease (14.7%). Behavioral indicators of good welfare, such as playing and cuddling with conspecifics, were observed several times per day by 40.9% and 87.9% of the respondents, respectively. Repetitive and unwanted behaviors were less common (fur biting, for instance, occurred 'never' in 82.9%). Caretakers rated their animals as generally more stressed if the animal was ill and more often showed fearful behavior toward them. Caretakers feeling closer to their animals spent more time engaging with them. Correct identification of this kind of association could be used as guidance for recommendations to improve chinchilla welfare at home and in the veterinary setting.

Abstract
The discovery of epigenetics and the interaction between genes and the environment have moved our understanding of how animal behavior develops from gestation to adulthood, and even throughout generations, to a new level. Studying the natural biology of exotic pets is key to providing them with a rich social and physical environment that will encourage species-specific behaviors. Combining parent-raising with appropriately timed human handling is likely to result in individuals with more resilience to stress. Using operant conditioning techniques early in life to train the animals' basic behaviors gives them control over their environment, empowering them through their social interactions.

Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a type of behavioral pathology seen not only in a variety of clinical conditions but also among non-clinical populations, particularly adolescents and young adults. With the exception of rare genetic conditions that give rise to self-harming behaviors, the etiology of NSSI and the events that trigger specific episodes of this behavior remain poorly understood. This review presents the features of an important, extensively studied animal model of NSSI, namely spontaneously occurring self-injurious behavior (SIB) in rhesus macaque monkeys. We compare and contrast rhesus monkey SIB with NSSI with respect to form, prevalence rates, environmental and biological risk factors, behavioral correlates, proposed functions, and treatment modalities. Many parallels between rhesus monkey SIB and NSSI are demonstrated, which supports the validity of this animal model across several domains. Determining the etiology of spontaneously occurring SIB in monkeys, its underlying biological mechanisms, and which pharmacological agents are most effective for treating the disorder may aid in identifying potential risk factors for the occurrence of NSSI in humans and developing medications for severe cases that are resistant to conventional psychotherapeutic approaches.
