Alginate composite films incorporated with Zn-based inorganic antimicrobials for food packaging: Effects of morphology

Biopolymers-based food packaging materials have drawn attention as potential candidates for substitution of petroleum-based materials. In this study, composite alginate films were developed by incorporating Zn-based antimicrobials to overcome the intrinsic disadvantages of alginates that hinder their wide applications. Antimicrobials with different morphologies (nanoplatelets, nanorods, and nanospheres) were employed to investigate the effects of antimicrobials' morphology on antibacterial, thermal, mechanical, and barrier performance of composite alginate films. Meanwhile, morphological and structural characterizations were carried out to explore the interactions between antimicrobials and alginate matrix. Results indicated that films with nanospheres exhibited superior antibacterial property, while those with one-dimensional nanorods possessed better mechanical and barrier performance. Besides, preliminary test on fresh-cut potatoes and chicken breasts indicated that the composite films showed potential in extending shelf life of foods. By incorporating antimicrobials with three different morphologies, this study provides particular insights into improving properties of composite packaging materials.

Surface modifications of short quartz fibers and their influence on the physicochemical properties and in vitro cell viability of dental composites

OBJECTIVE

Although glass fibers are more common, quartz fibers (QFs) are also considered as the ideal reinforcing material in dentistry, due to their superior mechanical strength, high purity, and good photoconductive properties. However, the relatively inert surfaces limit their further applications. Therefore, the aim of this study is to modify the fiber surface properties to improve the interfacial interactions with polymeric resins.

METHODS

In this study, we systematically introduced four different surface modification strategies onto short quartz fibers (SQFs) for the preparation of dental composites. Particularly, the acid etching was a facile way to create mechanical interlocking structures. In addition, the silanization process, the sol-gel treatment, and the polymer grafting were further proposed to increase the surface roughness and the reactive sites. The effect of surface modifications on the fiber surface morphological changes, mechanical properties, water stability, and in vitro cell viability of dental composites were investigated.

RESULTS

Among all surface-modified SQFs, SQFs-POSS (SQFs modified with methacrylate-POSS) exhibited the roughest surface morphology and highest grafting rates compared with other three materials. Furthermore, all these SQFs were applied as reinforcements to make dimethacrylate-based dental resin composites. Of all fillers, SQFs-POSS demonstrated the best reinforcing effect, providing significantly higher improvements of 55.7 %, 114.3 %, and 164.7 % for flexural strength, flexural modulus, and breaking energy, respectively, over those of SQFs-filled composite. The related reinforcing mechanism was further investigated. The SQFs-POSS-filled composite also exhibited the best water stability performance and in vitro cell viability.

SIGNIFICANCE

This work provided valuable insights into the optimization of filler-matrix interaction through fiber surface modifications. Specifically, SQFs-POSS markedly outperformed other formulations in terms of the physicochemical performance and in vitro cytotoxicity, which offers possibilities for developing high-performance dental composites for clinical applications in restorative dentistry.

A protocol for a comparative evaluation of the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth reinforced with Cention N, resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and short fiber reinforced flowable composite as an intraorifice barrier

Background

Endodontic treatment is the most common method for resolving pulpal and periapical pathology. However, various studies have reported that almost 11%-13% of all teeth that undergo extraction after endodontic treatment show the presence of cracks, craze lines, and vertical root fractures. Teeth with inadequate post endodontic restoration are more prone to fracture and coronal leakage, resulting in the diffusion of oral fluids, bacteria, bacterial products, and possibly root canal treatment failure. Furthermore, studies have advocated the use of endodontically treated teeth with restorative materials that have a similar or higher elastic modulus than the tooth for providing stiffness against forces that cause root fracture. Intraorifice barriers made of restorative materials that can bond to radicular dentin could thus be used to reinforce the radicular dentin while also preventing coronal microleakage. Although the sealing ability of intraorifice barriers has been widely compared in the literature, there have been few studies on the strengthening effect of the materials used in the study as intraorifice barriers when placed into the root canal. As a result, the current in vitro study aims to assess the effect of various materials as intraorifice barriers (Cention N, Resin modified glass ionomer cement, and short fiber reinforced flowable composite) on the force required fracture teeth after root canal treatment.

Methods

This in vitro study will be done on extracted human mandibular premolars with single root canal where after doing root canal treatment 2-3 mm obturating material would be replaced by intra orifice barriers (Cention N, resin modified glass ionomer cement [RMGIC], and short fiber reinforced flowable composite). The force required to fracture teeth will be calculated using universal testing machine.

Fracture Resistance and Failure Mode of Polyethylene Fiber-reinforced Resin-based Restorations in Structurally Compromised Premolars: an in Vitro Study

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of polyethylene fiber-reinforcement on the fracture resistance and fracture mode of extensive resin-based composite (RBC) restorations in structurally compromised maxillary premolars.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Maxillary premolars (54) with specific dimensions and extracted for orthodontic reasons were used. Following mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavity preparation and endodontic access, teeth were randomly assigned to one of three restorative protocols (n=18): RBC applied incrementally (I) or reinforced with woven polyethylene fibers (Ribbond) placed horizontally (H) or U-shaped (U). Restored teeth were stored for 45 days in distilled water at 37°C and then loaded monotonically until fracture. Half of the specimens in each group received axial loading (A) and the other half was loaded paraxially (PA). Fracture load data was assessed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test for multiple comparisons (α=0.05). The fracture initiation and propagation path were analyzed using stereomicroscopy and scanning-electron microscopy.

RESULTS

No significant differences were observed for the fracture strength among loading configurations, except for groups IA (825 N) and HA (553 N). Fracture initiated and propagated mainly at and through the RBC restoration in the I group, whereas a shift to the interface was observed in both polyethylene fiber-reinforced groups. Blocking and bridging of cracks were identified around the fibers, especially in specimens of group U.

CONCLUSIONS

Incorporation of woven polyethylene fibers to reinforce extensive MOD resin-based composite restorations on endodontically treated premolars reduced the occurrence of cohesive fractures in the restorative material but was unable to increase the fracture resistance of the affected teeth.

Effect of Long Glass Fiber Orientations or a Short-Fiber-Reinforced Composite on the Fracture Resistance of Endodontically Treated Premolars

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of direct restorations using unidirectional glass fiber orientations and a short-fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated premolars with mesio-occluso-distal cavities. Ninety double-rooted premolars were selected. Fifteen teeth were left intact/as a control group. The endodontic treatment and cavity preparations of seventy-five teeth were performed and divided into five experimental groups: Resin composite (RC), modified transfixed technique + RC, circumferential technique + RC, cavity floor technique + RC, and SFRC + RC. All teeth were fractured under oblique static loading at a 30° angle using a universal testing machine. The fracture patterns were observed and classified. Data were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, Pearson chi-square, and Tukey HSD post hoc tests (p = 0.05). The highest fracture strength values were obtained in intact teeth (599.336 N), followed by modified transfixed + RC treated teeth (496.58 N), SFRC + RC treated teeth (469.62 N), RC (443.51 N), circumferential + RC treated teeth (442.835 N), and cavity floor + RC treated teeth (404.623 N) (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the RC and the circumferential technique + RC (p > 0.05). Unrepairable fractures were observed at low rates (20%) in the modified transfixed + RC and SFRC + RC teeth, and at higher rates in RC (73.3%), cavity floor + RC (60%), and circumferential + RC (80%) teeth. The application of an SFRC or the modified transfixed technique yielded an improved fracture strength and the fracture pattern of ETPs being restored with a universal injectable composite.

Fiber-Reinforced Composites for Full-Arch Implant-Supported Rehabilitations: An In Vitro Study

Background: Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) have been proposed as an alternative to traditional metal alloys for the realization of frameworks in full-arch implant-supported prostheses. The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the deflection under load of seven prostheses endowed with frameworks made of different materials, including different types of fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs). Methods: A master cast with four implant analogues in correspondence with the two lateral incisors and the two first molars was used to create full-arch fixed prostheses with the same shape and different materials. Prostheses were made of the following different materials (framework+veneering material): gold alloy+resin (Au+R), titanium+resin (Ti+R), FRC with multidirectional carbon fibers+resin (ICFRC+AR), FRC with unidirectional carbon fibers+composite (UCFRC+C), FRC with glass fibers+resin (GFRC+AR), FRC with glass fibers+composite (GFRC+C), and resin (R, fully acrylic prosthesis). Flexural tests were conducted using a Zwick/Roell Z 0.5 machine, and the deflection of the lower surface of the prosthesis was measured in order to obtain load/deflection graphs. Results: Greater rigidity and less deflection were recorded for UCFRC+C and GFRC+C, followed by Ti+R and Au+R. The greatest deformations were observed for resin alone, ICFRC+R, and GFRC+R. The results were slightly different in the incisal region, probably due to the greater amount of veneering material in this area. Conclusions: When used to realize full-arch frameworks, Au and Ti allow for predictable mechanical behavior with gradual deformations with increasing load. UCFRC also demonstrated good outcomes and less deflection than ICFRCs when loaded. The GFRC full-arch framework may be a valid alternative, although it showed greater deflections. Further studies are needed in order to evaluate how different prosthesis designs and material thicknesses might affect the outcomes.

Effect of aging and fiber-reinforcement on color stability, translucency, and microhardness of single-shade resin composites versus multi-shade resin composite

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of aging and fiber-reinforcement on the color stability, translucency, and microhardness of single-shade resin composites versus multi-shade resin composite.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Four resin composites (Filtek Z250, Omnichroma, Vittra APS Unique, Zenchroma) were tested. Three subgroups of specimens were prepared for each of the composites: control, polyethylene fiber-reinforcement, and glass fiber-reinforcement- groups (n = 10/per group). The samples were subjected to aging for 10,000 thermal cycles. Color differences (ΔE00 ) were calculated after aging. Relative translucency parameter (RTP00 ) and microhardness values were calculated before and after aging. A two-way analysis of variance and the generalized linear model was used (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

The lowest and highest ΔE00 values were found for Filtek Z250 (0.6 ± 0.2) and Omnichroma resin composites (1.6 ± 0.4), respectively. The ΔE00 value of the polyethylene fiber-reinforcement group (1.2 ± 0.6) was significantly higher than the ΔE00 value of the glass fiber-reinforcement group (1.0 ± 0.4, p < 0.001). The RTP00 value of the glass fiber-reinforcement group (1.92 ± 0.78) was significantly higher than the RTP00 value of the polyethylene fiber-reinforcement group (1.72 ± 0.77, p < 0.001). The highest microhardness values were found in glass fiber-reinforcement group (76.48 ± 17.07, p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Single-shade resin composites were more translucent, had higher color change, and lower hardness than multi-shade resin composite. For relative translucency and microhardness, statistical significance was found in the material and fiber type interaction. The glass fiber-reinforcement provided higher translucency, lower color change and higher microhardness values than polyethylene fiber-reinforcement group after aging. Thermocycling had a significant impact on the color stability, translucency parameter, and microhardness of the tested resin composite materials.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Single-shade resin composite materials have greater color-changing potential. The glass fiber-reinforcement optimize resin material mechanical properties and color stability more than polyethylene fiber-reinforcement.

Shear Bond Strength to Enamel, Mechanical Properties and Cellular Studies of Fiber-Reinforced Composites Modified by Depositing SiO2 Nanofilms on Quartz Fibers via Atomic Layer Deposition

Introduction

Poor interfacial bonding between the fibers and resin matrix in fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) is a significant drawback of the composites. To enhance the mechanical properties of FRC, fibers were modified by depositing SiO2 nanofilms via the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. This study aims to evaluate the effect of ALD treatment of the fibers on the mechanical properties of the FRCs.

Methods

The quartz fibers were modified by depositing different cycles (50, 100, 200, and 400) of SiO2 nanofilms via the ALD technique and FRCs were proposed from the modified fibers. The morphologies, surface characterizations of nanofilms, mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility of FRCs were systematically investigated. Moreover, the shear bond strength (SBS) of FRCs to human enamel was also evaluated.

Results

The SEM and SE results showed that the ALD-deposited SiO2 nanofilms have good conformality and homogeneity. According to the results of FTIR and TGA, SiO2 nanofilms and quartz fiber surfaces had good chemical combinations. Three-point bending tests with FRCs showed that the deposited SiO2 nanofilms effectively improved FRCs' strength and Group D underwent 100 deposition cycles and had the highest flexural strength before and after aging. Furthermore, the strength of the FRCs demonstrated a crescendo-decrescendo tendency with SiO2 nanofilm thickness increasing. The SBS results also showed that Group D had outstanding performance. Moreover, the results of cytotoxicity experiments such as cck8, LDH and Elisa, etc., showed that the FRCs have good cytocompatibility.

Conclusion

Changing the number of ALD reaction cycles affects the mechanical properties of FRCs, which may be related to the stress relaxation and fracture between SiO2 nanofilm layers and the built-up internal stresses in the nanofilms. Eventually, the SiO2 nanofilms could enhance the FRCs' mechanical properties and performance to enamel by improving the interfacial bonding strength, and have good cytocompatibility.

Properties of model E-glass fiber composites with varying matrix monomer ratios

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate properties of fiber-reinforced-composites (FRC) containing Bis-EMA/UDMA monomers but identical dispersed phase (60% wt BaSi glass power +10% wt E-glass fibre).

METHODS

A control (Group A), monomer mixture comprising 60% Bis-GMA, 30% TEGDMA, and 10% PMMA (typical FRC monomers) was used. The following monomer mass fractions were mixed: 50% bis-GMA plus 50% of different ratios of Bis-EMA+UDMA to produce consistent formulations (Groups B-E) of workable viscosities was also studied. Flexural strength (FS), fracture toughness (KIC), water sorption (SP), solubility (SL) and hygroscopic expansion (HE) were measured. FS and KIC specimens were stored for 1, 7 d, and 30 d in water at 37 °C. SP/SL specimens were water-immersed for 168d, weighed at intervals, then dried for 84 d at 37 °C. To analyze differences in FS, and KIC, a two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.05) were conducted. For SP/SL, and HE, one-way ANOVA with subsequent Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.05) were utilized.

RESULTS

FS and KIC for groups A, D, E decreased progressively after 1 d. Groups B and C (highest amounts of Bis-EMA) did not decrease significantly. The modified matrix composites performed significantly better than the control group for SP and HE. The control group outperformed the experimental composites only for SL with up to 250% higher SL for group E (6.9 μg/mm) but still below the maximum permissible threshold of 7.5 μg/mm.

SIGNIFICANCE

EXPERIMENTAL: composites with highest amounts of Bis-EMA showed improved hydrolytic stability and overall enhancement in several clinically-relevant properties. This makes them potential candidates for alternative matrices to a semi-interpenetrating network in fiber-reinforced composites.

Electrospun nanofibers applications in caries lesions: prevention, treatment and regeneration

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease primarily mediated by biofilm formation, resulting in a net loss of mineral content and degradation of organic matrix in dental hard tissues. Caries lesions of varying depths can result in demineralization of the superficial enamel, the formation of deep cavities extending into the dentin, and even pulp infection. Electrospun nanofibers (ESNs) exhibit an expansive specific surface area and a porous structure, closely mimicking the unique architecture of the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). This unique topography caters to the transport of small molecules and facilitates localized therapeutic drug delivery, offering great potential in regulating cell behavior, and thereby attracting interest in ESNs' applications in the treatment of caries lesions and the reconditioning of the affected dental tissues. Thus, this review aims to consolidate the recent developments in ESNs' applications for caries lesions. This review begins with an introduction to the electrospinning technique and provides a comprehensive overview of the biological properties and modification methods of ESNs, followed by an introduction outlining the basic pathological processes, classification and treatment requirements of caries lesions. Finally, the review offers a detailed examination of the research progress on the ESNs' application in caries lesions and concludes by addressing the limitations.

Biomimetic approach to strengthen the incisal fracture composite build-up: an in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

Incisal composite build-up shows a high failure susceptibility. The incorporation of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) during composite restoration could improve its strength. Hence the study was planned to compare the effect of various positions of FRC on the strength of composite resin incisal build-ups.

METHODS

In maxillary incisors (n = 90), 3 mm of the incisal edge was cut and teeth were categorized into three groups based on the location and number of fibers used during incisal composite build-up - Group I: composite resin; Group II: composite resin and a single fiber palatally and Group III: composite resin along with two fibers palatally.

RESULTS

The data showed that group II had the maximum load-bearing values followed by group I and group III.

CONCLUSION

Within the confines of our study, it can be concluded that the addition of FRC to the conventional incisal composite build-up increased the overall strength restoration. Such composite restoration reinforced with a single fiber on the palatal side showed the highest load-bearing capacity compared to two fibers reinforced and unreinforced composites. The common mode of failure in group I was in composite resin, in two fibers reinforced at fibers-composite junction, and in one fiber reinforced composite was in the remaining part of the tooth.

Using Functionalized Micron-Sized Glass Fibres for the Synergistic Effect of Glass Ionomer on Luting Material

This laboratory experiment was conducted with the objective of augmenting the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement (GIC) via altering the composition of GIC luting powder through the introduction of micron-sized silanized glass fibres (GFs). Experimental GICs were prepared through the addition of two concentrations of GFs (0.5% and 1.0% by weight) to the powder of commercially available GIC luting materials. The effect of GF in set GIC was internally evaluated using micro-CT while the mechanical attributes such as nano hardness (nH), elastic modulus (EM), compressive strength (CS), and diametral tensile strength (DTS) were gauged. Additionally, the physical properties such as water solubility and sorption, contact angle (CA), and film thickness were evaluated. Reinforced Ketac Cem Radiopaque (KCR) GIC with 0.5 wt.% GF achieved improved nH, EM, CS, and DTS without affecting the film thickness, CA or internal porosity of the set GIC cement. In contrast, both GF-GIC formulations of Medicem (MC) GIC showed the detrimental effect of the GF incorporation. Reinforcing KCR GIC with 0.5 wt.% silanized GFs could improve the physical and mechanical attributes of luting material. Silanized GF, with optimal concentration within the GIC powder, can be used as a functional additive in KCR GIC with promising results.

Exploring the influence of placing bi-directional E-glass fibers as protective layer under a CAD-CAM resin composite on the fracture pattern

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the influence of the presence and position of bidirectional E-glass fibers under a CAD-CAM resin composite on the fracture pattern evaluated both after quasi-static mechanical loading and after fatigue.

METHODS

Rectangular specimens (10 mm-long, 5 mm-large and 4.2 mm-thick) were prepared and divided into four groups (n = 30/group). The control group (C-Group) consisted of a 4.2 mm-thick layer of monolithic CAD/CAM resin composite resin (Cerasmart, GC). In the 3 other groups including the placement of a fiber layer (F-Groups), the CAD/CAM resin composite layer was reduced to 3-, 2- and 1-mm thickness (F3-, F2- and F1-Groups, respectively). Two bonded layers of bidirectional E-glass FRC (Dentapreg, ADM A.S.) were bonded underneath and a light-curable resin composite base (Gaenial Posterior, GC) was then added to reach a total thickness of 4.2 mm for all samples. In each group, half of the specimens (n = 15) were submitted to quasi-static mechanical loading to failure in a universal testing machine. The other half (n = 15) was subjected to cyclic isometric stepwise loading until failure or completion of 105000 cycles (5000 cycles at 500 N, followed by five stages of 20000 cycles at 750 N, 1000 N, 1250 N, 1500 N, and 1750 N). The data were analyzed by Weibull statistics for quasi-static loading, and by the Kaplan-Meier product limit estimation procedure after fatigue. All fractured specimens were studied using light and electron microscopy techniques, and the types of fracture were determined.

RESULTS

For quasi-static mechanical loading, significant differences were observed for Weibull modulus and characteristic strength between groups, with values ranging from 10.8 to 22.4 for the former and from 2336.6 to 2974.7 for the latter. Also, survival after stepwise fatigue revealed statistically significant differences between groups (p < 0.05), the lowest values of cycles before failure being observed for F1-Group - Median = 61223 (50415; 65446) - as compared to the other groups - C-Group: Median = 89005 (86189; 98195); F3-Group: Median = 85198 (77279; 87860); F2-Group: Median = 89306 (87454; 97024). Both in quasi-static loading and after fatigue, the observation of fracture modes revealed major differences. While all fractures were vertical (split) in C-Group, the majority of the specimens in F-Groups presented some degree of horizontal deflection of the crack. In all deviated fractures, fractographic analysis confirmed a toughening effect of the fiber layer.

SIGNIFICANCE

The present in vitro work tends to show that the fracture pattern of CAD-CAM resin composites is favorably affected by the presence and position of an underlying bidirectional E-glass fiber layer. The placement of E-glass fibers under a CAD-CAM resin composite may therefore represent an interesting strategy to reduce the risk of catastrophic restoration failure, which could be integrated in the development of the new generation of indirect materials, possibly in 3D-printing approaches.

Fracture Resistance of Fiber-Reinforced Composite Restorations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Composite resin is universally used for posterior teeth restorations. Fibers have been suggested for the mechanical improvement of the restorations. This study assessed the fracture resistance of class II fiber-reinforced composite restorations and compared it with the fracture resistance of three control groups: (1) healthy teeth, (2) non-fiber-reinforced restorations and (3) unrestored cavities. A search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar from 15 May to 12 June 2023. Only in vitro studies from the last 10 years were included for this systematic analysis. This study was registered in the PROSPERO database, it followed PRISMA guidelines and the risk of bias was assessed using the QUIN tool. Fracture resistance median values, in Newtons (N), were calculated for the experimental and control groups (95% confidence interval). For pairwise comparison, nonparametric tests (p < 0.05) were applied. Twenty-four in vitro studies met the inclusion criteria. The fracture resistance of the experimental group was 976.0 N and differed (p < 0.05) from all controls. The experimental group showed lower values of fracture resistance than healthy teeth (1459.9 N; p = 0.048) but higher values than non-fiber-reinforced restorations (771.0 N; p = 0.008) and unrestored cavities (386.6 N; p < 0.001). In vitro systematic outcomes evidenced that glass and/or polyethylene fibers improved the fracture resistance of composite restorations.

Physical Properties and Clinical Performance of Short Fiber Reinforced Resin-based Composite in Posterior Dentition: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

This study compares the physical properties and clinical performance of short fiber reinforced composites (SFRC) to those of particulate-filled resin-based composites (PFRC) for class I and II direct restorations in permanent dentition.

METHODS

Systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using PubMed, Embase (Elsevier), and Dentistry and Oral Sciences Source (EBSCO) databases. The outcomes evaluated were physical properties including flexural strength, flexural modulus, elastic modulus, microhardness, shrinkage, fracture toughness, degree of conversion, and depth of cure. Clinical performance was evaluated with a systematic review.

RESULTS

The meta-analyses favored SFRC for flexural strength and fracture toughness compared to every PFRC subgroup, with a high quality of evidence. For all other properties, the meta-analyses favored SFRC to overall PFRC, with some non-significant differences with certain PFRC subgroups. The most recent clinical trial showed SFRC performed similarly to PFRC, however older studies suggest inferior surface texture and discoloration of SFRC compared to PFRC.

CONCLUSION

This study can aid dental professionals in clinical decision making, supporting that SFRC offers improved physical properties, especially fracture resistance and flexural strength, compared to PFRC.

Comparison of a Nanofiber-Reinforced Composite with Different Types of Composite Resins

The aim of this study was a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of the physical and mechanical properties of a newly developed nano-sized hydroxyapatite fiber-reinforced composite with other fiber-reinforced and particle-filled composites. Commercially available eight composite resins (3 fiber-reinforced and 5 particle-filled) were used: Fiber-reinforced composites: (1) NovaPro Fill (Nanova): newly developed nano-sized hydroxyapatite fiber-reinforced composite (nHAFC-NF); (2) Alert (Pentron): micrometer-scale glass fiber-reinforced composite (µmGFC-AL); (3) Ever X Posterior (GC Corp): millimeter-scale glass fiber-reinforced composite (mmGFC-EX); Particle-filled composites: (4) SDR Plus (Dentsply) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-SDR); (5) Estelite Bulk Fill (Tokuyama Corp.) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-EBF); (6) Filtek Bulk Fill Flow (3M ESPE) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-FBFF); (7) Filtek Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) high-viscosity bulk-fill (HVBF-FBF); and (8) Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE): microhybrid composite (µH-FZ). For Vickers microhardness, cylindrical-shaped specimens (diameter: 4 mm, height: 2 mm) were fabricated (n = 10). For the three-point bending test, bar-shaped (2 × 2 × 25 mm) specimens were fabricated (n = 10). Flexural strength and modulus elasticity were calculated. AcuVol, a video image device, was used for volumetric polymerization shrinkage (VPS) evaluations (n = 6). The polymerization degree of conversion (DC) was measured on the top and bottom surfaces with Fourier Transform Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR; n = 5). The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, Welsch ANOVA, and Games-Howell tests (p < 0.05). Pearson coefficient correlation was used to determine the linear correlation. Group µH-FZ displayed the highest microhardness, flexural strength, and modulus elasticity, while Group HVBF-FBF exhibited significantly lower VPS than other composites. When comparing the fiber-reinforced composites, Group mmGFC-EX showed significantly higher microhardness, flexural strength, modulus elasticity, and lower VPS than Group nHAFC-NF but similar DC. A strong correlation was determined between microhardness, VPS and inorganic filler by wt% and vol% (r = 0.572-0.877). Fiber type and length could affect the physical and mechanical properties of fibers containing composite resins.

Systematic review fracture resistance of endodontically treated posterior teeth restored with fiber reinforced composites- a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Large cavity designs and access cavities impair endodontically treated tooth fracture resistance. As the tooth's strength is known to reduce significantly after the root canal treatment, occlusal loading as a result of functions such as chewing, biting and certain parafunctional tendencies makes the endodontically treated tooth vulnerable to fracture. Hence, after endodontic treatment, it is vital to give adequate and appropriate restorative material to avoid tooth fractures. Accordingly, the choice of such restorative material should be dictated by the property of fracture resistance.

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study was to conduct a systematic review and critical analysis of available data from in vitro studies examining the fracture resistance of endodontically treated posterior teeth restored with fiber-reinforced composites.

METHODOLOGY

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRIS-MA) Statement was used to guide the reporting of this systematic review A comprehensive literature search was performed using MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and LILACS. A manual search of the reference lists of the articles was also performed. The databases provided a total of 796 studies from the electronic systematic search. The databases provided a total of 796 studies from the electronic systematic search. Two reviewers scrutinized the papers for eligibility based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and extracted data. The studies were assessed for their potential risk of bias. Based on modified JBI & CRIS (checklist for reporting in vitro studies) guidelines, along with the methodology and treatment objective, we have formulated 13 parameters specifically to assess the risk of bias. A total of 18 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included for qualitative analysis. Considering the high heterogeneity of the studies included, a meta-analysis could not be performed.

RESULTS

The majority of the included studies had a moderate or high risk of bias. When compared to traditional hybrid composites, fiber-reinforced composites showed increased fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth in the majority of investigations. On the other hand, limited evidence was found for the bulk fill composites. Moreover, moderate evidence was found for the fracture resistance of inlays and fiber posts with fiber-reinforced composites for core build-up in endodontically treated teeth. No evidence could be found comparing the fracture resistance of endo crowns and fiber-reinforced composites in endodontically treated teeth.

CONCLUSION

According to the research, using fiber-reinforced composites instead of conventional hybrid composites improves the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. However, there was a high risk of bias in the research considered. No judgments could be reached about the superiority of one material over another based-on comparisons between other core restorations.

Fiber-reinforced composite full-arch prosthetic reconstructions supported by three standard, short or extra-short implants: a two-center retrospective study

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the survival of implants and prostheses, and marginal bone level of fiber-reinforced composite implant supported fixed complete prostheses supported by 3 implants.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Patients with fiber-reinforced composite fixed prostheses supported by 3 standard-length, short or extra-short implants were included in this retrospective cohort study. Kaplan-Meier survival was computed for implants and prostheses. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regressions, clustered by patient, were used to analyze bone level differences as a function of different study covariates. Linear regressions were used to investigate the relationship between distal extension lengths and bone levels.

RESULTS

Forty-five patients with 138 implants were followed for up to 10 years after prosthesis insertion (mean 52.8; SD 20.5 months). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed overall survival rates of 96.5% for implants and of 97.8% for prostheses. The 10-year success rate for prostheses was 90.8%. Extra-short implants survived at similar rates to short and standard implants. Marginal bone levels surrounding implants remained stable over time, even showing slight bone gain on average (mean + 0.1 mm/year; SD ± 0.5 mm/year) Acrylic denture teeth, overdentures on the opposing arch, and implant placement in the posterior maxilla were correlated with bone gain. Screw retention, opposed to telescopic retention, was correlated with bone loss. Longer distal extensions were correlated with bone gain on the implants closest to the distal extensions.

CONCLUSIONS

Fiber-reinforced composite fixed prostheses supported by only 3 implants, most of which were extra-short, presented high survival rates with stable bone levels.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

An encouraging prognosis can be expected for restoration of atrophic maxillary and mandibular arches, when restored with fixed fiber-reinforced composite frameworks with long distal extensions and supported on only 3 short implants.

Fracture Resistance of Endodontically Treated Teeth Restored With Short Fiber Reinforced Composite and a Low Viscosity Bulk Fill Composite in Class II Mesial-Occlusal-Distal Access Cavities: An Ex-vivo Study

Background Teeth undergoing endodontic therapy are prone to structural weakening and increased risk of fractures. The absence of marginal ridges and pericervical dentin further compromises the fracture resistance. The choice of the post-endodontic coronal seal is crucial for the effectiveness of endodontic therapy. Aim and Objectives This study compared the fracture resistance and fracture modes of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) with mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavities restored with two different posterior composite resins: e-glass fiber reinforced composite (FRC) (everX Posterior) and flowable bulk fill composite (SDR Flow+).  Materials and Methods Sixty human maxillary first bicuspids were divided into four groups: Group PC- positive control (intact teeth), Group NC- negative control (unrestored endodontically treated teeth), Group EXP- samples restored with everX Posterior and nano-hybrid composite, and Group SDR- samples restored with SDR Flow+ and nano-hybrid composite. The NC, EXP, and Smart Dentin Replacement (SDR) samples underwent endodontic procedures and MOD cavity preparation. The samples from EXP and SDR groups were restored with composite resins as post-endodontic coronal seals. The fracture resistance was evaluated using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), and fracture modes were examined under a dental operating microscope (DOM) at 6x magnification. Statistical tests were performed using One-way ANOVA and Tukeys' post hoc tests. Results  The mean fracture resistance of the experimental groups was as follows: PC- 880.1 ± 209.3 N; NC- 238.1 ± 15.4 N; EXP- 766.1 ± 50.2 N; SDR- 540.8 ± 49.4 N. The highest fracture resistance values were observed in the PC group, whereas the NC group showed the least. The EXP group exhibited significantly higher fracture resistance than the SDR group. Adhesive failure was observed in most samples in the EXP group, whereas samples in the SDR group showed more cohesive failures. Favorable fractures were more prevalent in samples restored with EverX posterior. Conclusion The study findings suggest that everX Posterior can enhance the fracture resistance of structurally compromised ETT. Samples restored with everX Posterior showed a favorable mode of fracture, which can be restored. Applying FRCs can contribute to the longevity and success of endodontic treatment by reinforcing the weakened tooth structure and preventing fractures.

Micromechanical interlocking structure at the filler/resin interface for dental composites: a review

Dental resin composites (DRCs) are popular materials for repairing caries or dental defect, requiring excellent properties to cope with the complex oral environment. Filler/resin interface interaction has a significant impact on the physicochemical/biological properties and service life of DRCs. Various chemical and physical modification methods on filler/resin interface have been introduced and studied, and the physical micromechanical interlocking caused by the modification of fillers morphology and structure is a promising method. This paper firstly introduces the composition and development of DRCs, then reviews the chemical and physical modification methods of the filler/resin interface, mainly discusses the interface micromechanical interlocking structures and their enhancement mechanism for DRCs, finally give a summary on the existing problems and development potential.

Reinforcement of resin-modified glass-ionomer cement with glass fiber and graphene oxide

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effect of adding glass fiber and graphene oxide to a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC).

METHODS

Experimental RMGICs were prepared by adding separately and simultaneously glass fibers (5, 10, and 20 wt%) and graphene oxide (1, 3, and 5 wt%) to the powder of RMGIC with different ratios. The samples were examined under SEM and XRD. The surface roughness, flexural strength, Vickers microhardness, water sorption, and solubility were investigated. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey tests (p = 0.05).

RESULTS

Adding fiber and graphene oxide to RMCIS increased the surface roughness, flexural strength, and microhardness. The highest surface roughness value was obtained in the 20% fiber+5% graphene oxide adding group and the lowest in the control group (p < 0.05). The highest microhardness and flexural strength values were acquired in the 20% fiber-adding group and the lowest in the control group (p < 0.05). 10% and 20% fiber addition increased water sorption and solubility (p < 0.05). Adding 3%, 5% graphene oxide, and 20% fiber+5% graphene oxide reduced water sorption (p < 0.05). The highest water sorption was found in the 20% fiber-adding group and the lowest in the 5% graphene oxide and %20 fiber+5% graphene oxide-adding groups (p < 0.05). Graphene oxide alone and together with fiber did not affect the solubility (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The results show that reinforcement of RMGIC with glass fiber and graphene oxide may improve the mechanical properties. But the glass fibers may cause more water sorption and solubility. Graphene oxide may decrease water sorption of RMGIC and fiber-reinforced RMGIC.

Effect of short fiber-reinforced composite combined with polyethylene fibers on fracture resistance of endodontically treated premolars

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Whether direct coronal restorations of endodontically treated teeth with short fiber-reinforced composite combined with polyethylene fibers provide adequate mechanical strength is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the fracture strength of endodontically treated premolars with standardized mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) preparations restored with short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) combined with polyethylene Ribbond fibers (PRFs).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 40 premolars were selected and distributed into 4 groups (n=10) as follows: group restored with SFRC (EverX Posterior), group restored with PRF (Ribbond fibers), and group restored with the combination PRF+SFRC, all followed by a conventional composite resin (IPS Empress Direct). MOD preparations and endodontic treatments were prepared except in the control group (intact teeth). Specimens were loaded using a universal testing machine until fracture occurred at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min, and the failure type and fracture patterns was reported descriptively. The mean values of the groups were analyzed by using the Shapiro-Wilk test and 1-way ANOVA tests (α=.05).

RESULTS

Restoration with PRF+SFRC provided the highest mean ±standard deviation fracture resistance (288.2 ±73.5 N). Restoration with just PRF had the lowest values (192.4 ±25.4 N), which were statistically different from those of SFRC and PRF+SFRC (P<.05). The predominant mode of failure was mixed, and all fracture patterns were favorable.

CONCLUSIONS

Reinforcing endodontically treated premolars with MOD cavities with Ribbond fibers followed by a conventional composite resin enhanced fracture resistance and may be suitable for the direct coronal restoration of large posterior cavities in stress-bearing areas.

Effects of Fiber Loading on Mechanical Properties of Kenaf Nanocellulose Reinforced Nanohybrid Dental Composite Made of Rice Husk Silica

The innovation of nanocellulose as reinforcement filler in composites has been a topic of interest in the development of new biomaterials. The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of a nanohybrid dental composite made of rice husk silica and loaded with different percentages of kenaf nanocellulose. Kenaf cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were isolated and characterized using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) (Libra 120, Carl Zeiss, Germany). The experimental composite was fabricated with fiber loadings of 1 wt%, 2 wt%, 3 wt%, 4 wt%, and 6 wt% silane-treated kenaf CNC, and subjected to a flexural and compressive strength test (n = 7) using an Instron Universal Testing Machine (Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan), followed by a scanning electron microscopic assessment of the flexural specimen’s fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) (FEI Quanta FEG 450, Hillsborough, OR, USA). Commercial composites Filtek Z350XT (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA), Neofil (Kerr Corporation, Orange, CA, USA) and Ever-X Posterior (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) were used as a comparison. The average diameter of kenaf CNC under TEM was 6 nm. For flexural and compressive strength tests, one-way ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between all groups. Compared to the control group (0 wt%), the incorporation of kenaf CNC (1 wt%) into rice husk silica nanohybrid dental composite showed a slight improvement in mechanical properties and modes of reinforcement, which was reflected in SEM images of the fracture surface. The optimum dental composite reinforcement made of rice husk was 1 wt% kenaf CNC. Excessive fiber loading results in a decline in mechanical properties. CNC derived from natural sources may be a viable alternative as a reinforcement co-filler at low concentrations.

Effect of silane coupling agent and concentration on fracture toughness and water sorption behaviour of fibre-reinforced dental composites

OBJECTIVES

This paper presents the effect of silane treatment of S-2 Glass fibres on the fracture toughness and water sorption/solubility behaviour of fibre-reinforced flowable dental composites. The effect of epoxy- and methacrylate-based silane coupling agents (SCAs) on the mechanical strength and hydrolytic properties were investigated. The concentration of the selected SCAs on the mechanical and physical properties were investigated. The influence of molecular structure and concentration in the interfacial adhesion at the fibre-matrix interfaces was also studied.

METHODS

Short S-2 Glass fibres of 250 µm in length and 5 µm in diameter were etched with acid to remove any impurities and roughen the surface. The acid-etched fibres were silane treated with 3MPS, 3GPS, and 8MOTS at different concentrations by weight (%). The silane-treated fibres were incorporated at 5 % into the dental resin mixture. Untreated fibres were added at 5 % to the dental resin mixture and served as the control group. The physical properties such as water sorption, solubility, and desorption along with mechanical properties such as fracture toughness and total fracture work of the fibre-reinforced dental composites grafted with the above-mentioned SCAs were evaluated. The surface morphology of the fractured surface was studied and analysed.

RESULTS

The fracture toughness tests showed that the dental composites grafted with optimum weight per cent (wt. %) concentration of the SCA had a better stress intensity factor (K_IC) when compared to the 2.0 wt. % and 3.0 wt. % concentration. The K_IC value of dental composites grafted with untreated surface etched glass fibres was less than the K_IC values of dental composites grafted with optimum concentrations of 3MPS, 3GPS, and 8MOTS by 81.6 %, 38.6 %, and 110.5 %, respectively. A similar trend was found while investigating the total work of fracture of the dental composites, between optimum concentration, 2.0 wt. % and 3.0 wt. % concentration of respective SCA. The increase in silane concentration also led to an increase in the water sorption/solubility characteristics. The absorption of water was most severe in the fibre-reinforced dental composites without silane treatment (32.9 µg/mm³). The ANOVA results showed that the fibre-reinforced dental composites grafted with 8MOTS at optimum concentration showed an increase in fracture toughness when compared to optimum concentrations of 3GPS and 3MPS by 51.9 % and 15.9 %, respectively. The enhanced mechanical and physical characteristics are due to the increased adhesion between the fibre and silane achieved from the optimum wt. % concentration of 8MOTS. Similarly, dental composites grafted with 8MOTS at optimum concentration showed a decrease in water sorption characteristics when compared to optimum concentrations of 3GPS and 3MPS by 18.2 % and 0.6 %, respectively. The decreased water sorption characteristics at the optimum concentration of 8MOTS could be due to the reduced availability of reactive hydroxyl groups and the hydrophobic characteristics of 8MOTS.

SIGNIFICANCE

Silane coupling agents (SCAs) are important components of dental composites. The type and concentration of SCA have a significant effect on material properties. The current study focuses on understanding the effects of different SCAs and wt. % concentrations on the interfacial fracture behaviour and the influence of different SCAs on the water sorption and solubility behaviour of S-2 Glass fibre-reinforced flowable dental composites.

Fatigue Resistance of Dissected Lower First Molars Restored with Direct Fiber-Reinforced Bridges—An In Vitro Pilot Study

The aim of this research was to evaluate the mechanical impact of utilizing different fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) systems to reinforce inlay-retained bridges in dissected lower molars with different levels of periodontal support. A total of 24 lower first molars and 24 lower second premolars were included in this study. The distal canal of all molars received endodontic treatment. After root canal treatment, the teeth were dissected, and only the distal halves were kept. Standardized class II occluso-distal (OD) (premolars) and mesio-occlusal (MO) (dissected molars) cavities were prepared in all teeth, and premolar–molar units were created. The units were randomly distributed among four groups (n = six/group). With the aid of a transparent silicone index, direct inlay-retained composite bridges were fabricated. In Groups 1 and 2, both discontinuous (everX Flow) and continuous (everStick C&B) fibers were used for reinforcement, while in Groups 3 and 4, only discontinuous fibers (everX Flow) were used. The restored units were embedded in methacrylate resin, simulating either physiological periodontal conditions or furcation involvement. Subsequently, all units underwent fatigue survival testing in a cyclic loading machine until fracture, or a total of 40,000 cycles. Kaplan–Meyer survival analyses were conducted, followed by pairwise log-rank post hoc comparisons. Fracture patterns were evaluated visually and with scanning electron microscopy. In terms of survival, Group 2 performed significantly better than Groups 3 and 4 (p < 0.05), while there was no significant difference between the other groups. In the case of impaired periodontal support, a combination of both continuous and discontinuous short FRC systems increased the fatigue resistance of direct inlay-retained composite bridges compared to bridges that only contained short fibers. Such a difference was not found in the case of sound periodontal support between the two different bridges.

Fiber-reinforced composites in dentistry - An insight into adhesion aspects of the material and the restored tooth construct

OBJECTIVE

This review aimed to highlight the insight into adhesion aspects within the components of the glass FRC (i.e., fiber and matrix) and between resin luting material and the glass FRC construction.

METHODS

The fundamentals of semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) based FRCs and their advantages in forming a solid adhesive interface with indirect FRC restoration, dental adhesive, and luting cement are elaborated. The important resin matrix systems and glass fibers used in FRCs are discussed. This is principally based on a survey of the literature over Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases and a review of the relevant studies and publications in scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals for the specific topic of biomaterials science. The keywords used for the search approach were: adhesion, fiber-reinforced composite, glass fiber, and semi-interpenetrating polymer network.

RESULTS

The polymer matrix systems of semi-IPN-based FRCs and formation of secondary-IPN layer are pivotal for bonding of multiphasic indirect dental constructs and repair. Additionally, describing areas of indication for FRCs in dentistry, explaining the adhesion aspects of FRC for the cohesion of the material itself, and for obtaining durable adhesion when the FRC construct is luted to tooth and remaining dentition. Current progress in the field of FRC research and future directions are summarized and presented.

SIGNIFICANCE

By understanding the isotropic-anisotropic nature of fibers and the interfacial adhesion within the components of the FRC; between resin cement and the FRC construction, the clinically successful FRC-based multiphasic indirect tooth construct can be achieved. The interfacial adhesion within the components of the FRC and between resin luting material and the FRC construction play a key role in adhesion-based unibody dental restorations.

Discoloration of fiber-reinforced composite resin disc for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing after immersion in coffee and curry solutions

The purpose of this study was to clarify the discoloration of fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRC) disc materials. The color differences (ΔEs) of three CAD/CAM disc materials, FRC with different fiber orientations, composite resin, and polyether-ether-ketones were evaluated after month-long immersion in water, coffee, and curry. The ΔEs of all materials after coffee and curry immersion increased with increasing immersion periods, while those after water immersion barely increased. FRC exhibited a smaller color difference and water sorption value than composite resin and a greater color difference and water sorption value than polyether-ether-ketones. The ΔEs after coffee immersion were significantly correlated with the water sorption value. The ΔE of FRC with fiber orientations perpendicular to the surface was greater than that of FRC with fiber orientations parallel to the surface, likely due to greater exposure of the matrix-fiber interface. This result suggested that the fiber orientations of FRC affected the discoloration.

Transmission of radiant light energy through the sides of fiber posts

OBJECTIVES

Resin cements are light polymerized, but the light may not reach all areas of root canals. The purpose of this study was to determine the best predictor of transmitted light radiant exposure (TLRE) from posts' sides.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fiber posts were placed in a custom-made apparatus and advanced by 1-mm increments. The LED curing probe tip was activated for 40 s on the coronal end of the post. The TLRE was measured with an LED radiometer detector positioned on the side of the post exposed by an opening in the apparatus. Hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was performed.

RESULTS

Post system explained an additional 23.62% of the variation in TRLE. Adding actual post diameter explained an additional 62.64% of the variation in TRLE. While adding post length explained an additional 0.67%. Changing post system from FiberKleer to Postec Plus will decrease the mean value of TRLE by 4.90 units on average. Also, a one-unit increase of actual post diameter and length will decrease the value of TRLE by 44.96 and 0.44 units respectively. The TLRE ranged from 46 to 290 mJ/cm² , which was between 0.73% and 6.63% of the original emanating light.

CONCLUSIONS

The changes in post system, posts' diameter and length can be used to predict the unit changes in TLRE on the side of a translucent fiber post. Emanating radiant exposure from the side of the post was lower than 6.63% of the exposure entering the post.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Fiber post diameter and length and post system can influence light radiant exposure transmitted from posts' sides, transmitting minimal radiant exposure, which can be increased by increasing curing duration.

In Vitro Comparison of Fracture Resistance of Severely Damaged Primary Anterior Teeth Restored with Different Post and Core Systems

Objectives

This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance (FR) of severely damaged primary anterior teeth restored with five different post and core systems.

Materials and Methods

This in vitro, experimental study evaluated 60 extracted primary maxillary central incisors. The teeth were horizontally sectioned at 1 mm above their cementoenamel junction (CEJ), underwent pulpectomy, and their root canals were filled with Metapex paste. After post space preparation and sealing of root fillings with light-cure glass ionomer (1 mm thickness), the teeth were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 12) of (1) glass fiber post and everX composite (reinforced with short fibers), (2) glass fiber post and bulk-fill composite, (3) everX composite post and core, (4) bulk-fill composite post and core, and (5) Filtek conventional composite post and core. The teeth underwent 5,000 thermal cycles between 5°C and 55°C, and their FR was measured in a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min, 148°). The mode of failure was also determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test at 0.05 level of significance.

Results

The FR was the highest in fiber post and everX composite, and the lowest in Z250 conventional composite post and core group (P < 0.001). The FR of fiber post and everX composite group was significantly higher than that of everX composite post and core (P = 0.04), bulk-fill composite post and core (P = 0.001), and Z250 composite post and core (P < 0.001) groups. The frequency of repairable fractures was the highest in glass fiber post plus everX composite (91.66%) and the lowest in Filtek conventional post and core group (66.66%) (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

Within the limitations of this in vitro study, the results showed that restoration of severely damaged primary maxillary central incisors with glass fiber post and everX composite reinforced with short fibers enhanced their FR, and increased the chance of reparability in case of restoration fracture. This technique may be recommended for the restoration of primary anterior teeth since it is simple and saves time.

Fracture Resistance of Endodontically Treated Maxillary Premolar Teeth Restored with Wallpapering Technique: A Comparative In Vitro Study

Objectives

This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance and mode of failure of endodontically treated maxillary premolar teeth restored with different direct composite restorative techniques.

Materials and Methods

Forty freshly extracted maxillary premolar teeth with comparable sizes were used in this in vitro study. Each tooth received mesio-occluso-distal cavity preparation (3 mm width and 6 mm depth) followed by endodontic treatment. Canals were instrumented with RACE EVO rotary files (FKG, Dentaire, Switzerland) up to MAF 25/.06. Canals were obturated using a single cone technique, then the teeth were divided arbitrarily into five groups (n = 8): Group A: direct composite resin only using a centripetal technique, Group B: direct composite resin with glass fiber post, Group C: direct composite resin with short fiber-reinforced composite (everX Flow), Group D: direct composite resin with leno wave ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (LWUHMWPE) fibers placed on cavity floor, and Group E: direct composite resin with LWUHMWPE fibers placed circumferentially around the cavity walls (wallpapering technique). The teeth were then stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hr. The fracture resistance of each sample was measured using a universal testing machine in Newton (N). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Bonferroni test with a significance level of 0.05.

Results

Group E recorded the maximum mean of fracture load (2,139.375 N), while Group A recorded the minimum mean of fracture load (689.6250 N). The one-way ANOVA test revealed a significant difference between the groups. The Bonferroni test showed a significant difference between each two groups, with the exception of those between Groups B and C and between Groups D and E, where there were no statistically significant differences (p > 0.05).

Conclusion

Restoration of endodontically treated teeth using the wallpapering technique recorded the highest mean of fracture resistance with a repairable mode of fracture.

Quasi-static loading of glass fiber-reinforced composite cervical fusion cage

OBJECTIVES

Anterior decompression and fusion in cervical spine has become one of the most common procedures in neurosurgery. In the surgery, cervical cage implants made of different biomaterials are used. Our purpose was to create a cervical cage made of glass fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) filled with bioactive glass particles and to characterize its behavior in quasi-static compression/shear stress loading conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

FRC cages (n = 6) were manufactured with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 layers of glass fiber laminates and thermoset dimethacrylate resin matrix resulting in wall thickness from 0.70 to 2.1 mm. Control cage was a commercial PEEK cage (CeSpaceXP) implant with asymmetrical wall thickness of up 4.0 mm. Interior of the cage was filled with glass particles of the size 500-1250 μm simulating the bioactive glass which are used in FRC cranial implants. The FRC cages were quasi-statically loaded (compressive/shear stress) at a constant speed of 1 mm/min in the air.

RESULTS

The average yield strength force (YF) of the control PEEK cage was 3483.6 N (±134.3 N). The average YFs for tested FRC cage with 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 layers of FRC fabric varied from 1336.5 N (±403.8 N) to 7675.0 N (±670.0 N), respectively. The average ultimate forces (UF) for tested FRC cages varied from 1535.8 N (±406.2 N) to 9975.0 N (±1492.4 N). With six layers of FRC fabric, YF of the FRC cage was comparable to the PEEK implants.

CONCLUSIONS

In this study, it was demonstrated that it is possible to manufacture a cervical interbody fusion device made of FRC and filled with bioactive glass with proper load bearing capacities. Because of physical properties of FRC-bioactive glass, the FRC cage might have some advances compared to the state-of-the-art cages, like faster bony union and smaller rate of subsidence, which will be studied in the future.

Evaluation of Fracture Strength of Fiber-Reinforced Direct Composite Resin Restorations: An In Vitro Study

This in vitro study aimed to compare the fracture strength of direct non-reinforced class II composite resin restorations and polyethylene fiber-reinforced restorations, and also to investigate the influence of the locations of polyethylene fibers within the cavity on the fracture strength. Sixty freshly extracted human teeth were disinfected and prepared (class II cavity design). The teeth were assigned randomly into four groups (n = 13). Group I (control) was restored with nano-hybrid composite resin. The other three experimental groups were restored with the same composite resin material reinforced by polyethylene fibers (Ribbond) at different locations. Fibers were placed either on the axial wall (Group II), on the gingival floor (Group III), or on the axial wall and pulpal/gingival floor (Group IV) of the proximal cavity. All the teeth were subjected to thermocycling to simulate the oral environment. The fracture strength was measured using a universal testing machine. Group IV had the highest mean fracture strength at maximum load (148.74 MPa), followed by Group II (140.73 MPa), Group III (136.34 MPa), and Group I (130.08 MPa), with a statistically significant difference from the control group (p = 0.008) but not between groups II and III.

Effect of Reinforced Self-Cured Acrylic Resin on Flexural Strength

Introduction

The aim of this study was to determine the effect on the flexural strength of the self-cured acrylic resin by incorporating short E-glass fiber (SEGF) and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) filler in the acrylic resin.

Methods

Fifty-six rectangular (64 × 10 × 3.3 mm³) (ISO standard 20795–1:2013) self-cured acrylic resin specimens were fabricated and divided into seven groups per test, according to the percent by weight of SEGF and UHMW-PE filler (n = 8). Each testing group entails a control group and an addition of 1% and 2% SEGF, 1% and 2% UHMW-PE, 0.5% SEGF/UHMW-PE, and 1% SEGF/UHMW-PE. A three-point bending test was conducted to obtain the flexural strength of each specimen. The fractured surfaces of the specimens were evaluated, and a scanning electron microscope view was taken. Test results were statistically analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (p value<0.05).

Results

The flexural strength of self-cured acrylic resin with the addition of 1% SEGF and 1% SEGF/UHMW-PE (50.93, 46.13 MPa) was significantly higher than that of the control group (41.72 MPa) (p < 0.05). Nonetheless, the addition of 1% UHMW-PE (39.34 MPa) showed the lowest flexural strength, significantly lower than other experimental groups, except the control group.

Conclusion

The addition of 1% SEGF significantly improves the flexural strength of the self-cured acrylic resin denture base.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Coiled Carbon Nanotube Pull-Out from Matrix

The interaction between coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNT) and the polymer matrix is important in the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of the CCNT reinforced nanocomposite. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to study the interfacial characteristics of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). Furthermore, the influence of the geometries of the CCNTs on the load transfer mechanism is evaluated. Pullout simulations considering different geometries of CCNTs are carried out to examine the tensile force and the interfacial shear stress (ISS). The results reveal that the maximal tensile force is reduced by increasing CCNT inner diameters, increasing the helix angles, and decreasing nanotube diameters. The distance between CCNTs and the polymer matrix is varied, and the interfacial distance favors greater ISS. Decreasing the inner diameter of the CCNT, the helix angle, and the tube diameter increases the ISS. The enhancement mechanism of CCNT/polymer composites has also been illustrated. Due to a lack of experimental results, only numerical results are given. The present study helps to understand the interfacial adhesion behavior between the polymer matrix and CCNTs and is expected to contribute to the development of CCNT reinforced polymer composites.

Rheological and Mechanical Properties of Thermoplastic Crystallizable Polyimide-Based Nanocomposites Filled with Carbon Nanotubes: Computer Simulations and Experiments

Recently, a strong structural ordering of thermoplastic semi-crystalline polyimides near single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was found that can enhance their mechanical properties. In this study, a comparative analysis of the results of microsecond-scale all-atom computer simulations and experimental measurements of thermoplastic semi-crystalline polyimide R-BAPB synthesized on the basis of dianhydride R (1,3-bis-(3′,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) benzene) and diamine BAPB (4,4′-bis-(4″-aminophenoxy) biphenyl) near the SWCNTs on the rheological properties of nanocomposites was performed. We observe the viscosity increase in the SWCNT-filled R-BAPB in the melt state both in computer simulations and experiments. For the first time, it is proven by computer simulation that this viscosity change is related to the structural ordering of the R-BAPB in the vicinity of SWCNT but not to the formation of interchain linkage. Additionally, strong anisotropy of the rheological properties of the R-BAPB near the SWCNT surface was detected due to the polyimide chain orientation. The increase in the viscosity of the polymer in the viscous-flow state and an increase in the values of the mechanical characteristics (Young’s modulus and yield peak) of the SWCNT-R-BAPB nanocomposites in the glassy state are stronger in the directions along the ordering of polymer chains close to the carbon nanofiller surface. Thus, the new experimental data obtained on the R-BAPB-based nanocomposites filled with SWCNT, being extensively compared with simulation results, confirm the idea of the influence of macromolecular ordering near the carbon nanotube on the mechanical characteristics of the composite material.

Short fiber-reinforced resin-based composites (SFRCs); Current status and future perspectives

One technique for placing of resin-based composite for large posterior cavities is the use of short fiber-reinforced resin-based composite (SFRC) to replace dentin in a biomimetic approach. As endurance under mastication cycles is a significant consideration in the clinical success of resin-based composite posterior restorations, the use of SFRC as a base material may prevent restorative fracture due to the fibers' effectiveness in stopping cracks. This review article specifies the characteristics of SFRC and describes the major underlying mechanisms of short fiber reinforcement for resin-based composite. Insights are further taken from laboratory studies used to define the short fiber-related properties of resin-based composite and the performance of currently available materials, focusing on aspects that are relevant to the reinforcement of resin-based composite. Finally, future standpoints on the development of SFRCs with nano fibers and different resin monomers, and their role in digital dentistry, are discussed.

An Ultrasonic Motor Using a Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced/Poly-Phenylene-Sulfide-Based Vibrator with Bending/Longitudinal Modes

In this study, a linear ultrasonic motor (USM) with carbon-fiber-reinforced/poly-phenylene-sulfide (PPS/CF) was developed and the feasibility of using PPS/CF to achieve a lightweight USM was tested. Here, anisotropic Young’s moduli of PPS/CF possibly enhance the driving force when the slider’s moving direction is orthogonal to the carbon-fibers’ filling direction. Further, PPS/CF’s low density may help avoid excessive enhancement in weight. Initially, we measured anisotropic Young’s moduli of PPS/CF, and determined the vibration modes, configuration, and dimensions of the PPS/CF vibrating body through finite element analysis. Subsequently, we fabricated a 45.7-mm-long 30-mm-diameter vibrator to form a linear motor. Finally, we evaluated the load characteristics of the PPS/CF-based motor and made comparisons with isotropic-material-based USMs. At 30.2 kHz frequency, the PPS/CF-based vibrator worked in the 2nd bending and 2nd longitudinal modes as predicted. The PPS/CF-based motor yielded the maximal thrust, no-load speed, and maximal output power of 392 mN, 1103 mm/s, and 62 mW, respectively. Moreover, the thrust force density and power density reached 20.3 N/kg and 3.2 W/kg, respectively, which were relatively high compared to those of the PPS- and aluminum-based USMs with the same vibration modes and similar structures. This preliminary study implies PPS/CF’s feasibility for achieving lightweight USMs, and provides a candidate material for designing micro/meso USMs.

High-Performance Dental Composites Based on Hierarchical Reinforcements

Use of high-performance fibers such as poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) improves the mechanical properties of dental fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs). However, the surfaces of high-performance fibers are relatively inert, and the interface with the resin matrix is poor. This has become a limitation restricting the performance of PBO FRCs in dentistry. Nanomaterials were introduced onto PBO fibers to construct various hierarchical reinforcements to obtain a dental FRC with higher flexural performance and optimized interface bonding. Four hierarchical reinforcements were constructed: PBO-ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), PBO-ZnO nanowires (NWs), PBO-ZnO NPs–cage silsesquioxane (POSS), and PBO-ZnO NWs-POSS. Performance following this optimized method was evaluated at macroscale and microscale levels, including measurement of the interfacial properties and mechanical properties of FRCs. The physicochemical characteristics of PBO fibers before and after modification were measured to determine the interfacial bonding mechanisms and to verify the connection between the microinterface and macromechanical properties. The cytotoxicity of the preferred PBO FRC was evaluated using the CCK8 assay. In comparison to other designs, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of PBO-ZnO NWs-POSS was the highest (29.31 ± 2.40 MPa). The corresponding FRC had the highest flexural strength under a static load (925.0 ± 39.2 MPa), the flexural modulus (39.39 ± 1.41 GPa) was equivalent to that of human dentin, and in vitro cytotoxicity was acceptable. The interfacial bonding mechanisms of PBO-ZnO NWs-POSS resulted from mechanical interlocking, chemical bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals forces. In summary, the PBO-ZnO NWs-POSS hierarchical reinforcement was introduced in dental FRCs and showed remarkable enhancement of the IFSS and flexural properties. We verified that the PBO-ZnO NWs-POSS hierarchical reinforcement was successful. This PBO FRC may be applied in dentistry as a new option for endodontic posts. Our study provides an interface design strategy for developing high-performance FRCs reinforced with high-performance fibers for dental applications.

A Review on Synthesis Methods of Phyllosilicate- and Graphene-Filled Composite Hydrogels

This review discusses, in brief, the various synthetic methods of two widely-used nanofillers; phyllosilicate and graphene. Both are 2D fillers introduced into hydrogel matrices to achieve mechanical robustness and water uptake behavior. Both the fillers are inserted by physical and chemical gelation methods where most of the chemical gelation, i.e., covalent approaches, results in better physical properties compared to their physical gels. Physical gels occur due to supramolecular assembly, van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic associations, and H-bonding. For chemical gelation, in situ radical triggered gelation mostly occurs.

Mechanically Reinforced, Flexible, Hydrophobic and UV Impermeable Starch-Cellulose Nanofibers (CNF)-Lignin Composites with Good Barrier and Thermal Properties

Bio-based composite films have been widely studied as potential substitutes for conventional plastics in food packaging. The aim of this study was to develop multifunctional composite films by introducing cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and lignin into starch-based films. Instead of costly and complicated chemical modification or covalent coupling, this study optimized the performance of the composite films by simply tuning the formulation. We found that starch films were mechanically reinforced by CNF, with lignin dispersing as nanoparticles embedded in the matrix. The newly built-up hydrogen bonding between these three components improves the integration of the films, while the introduction of CNF and lignin improved the thermal stability of the starch-based films. Lignin, as a functional additive, improved hydrophobicity and blocked UV transmission. The inherent barrier property of CNF and the dense starch matrix provided the composite films with good gas barrier properties. The prepared flexible films were optically transparent, and exhibited UV blocking ability, good oxygen-barrier properties, high hydrophobicity, appreciable mechanical strength and good thermal stability. These characteristics indicate potential utilization as a green alternative to synthetic plastics especially for food packaging applications.

Evaluation of New Hollow Sleeve Composites for Direct Post-Core Construction

The preset shape and diameter of a prefabricated FRC post rarely follows the anatomy of the root canal. To solve this problem, a new hollow sleeve composite (HSC) system for post-core construction was developed and characterized. A woven fiber was impregnated with two types of resins: Bis-GMA or PMMA, and rolled into cylinders with outer diameter of 2 mm and two different inner diameters, namely 1.2 or 1.5 mm. The commercial i-TFC system was used as a control. Dual-cure resin composite was injected into these sleeves. Additionally, conventional solid fiber post was used as the inner part of the sleeve. The three-point bending test was used to measure the mechanical properties of the specimens and the fracture surface was examined using an electron microscope (SEM). The HSC (1.5 mm, Bis-GMA) revealed a statistically similar flexural modulus but higher flexural strength (437 MPa) compared to i-TFC (239 MPa; ANOVA, p < 0.05). When a fiber post was added inside, all values had a tendency to increase. After hydrothermal accelerated aging, the majority of specimens showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in flexural strength and modulus. SEM fracture analysis confirmed that the delamination occurred at the interface between the outer and inner materials. The HSC system provided flexibility but still high mechanical values compared to the commercial system. Thus, this system might offer an alternative practical option for direct post-core construction.

Effect of fibre-reinforced composite as a post-obturation restorative material on fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth: A systematic review

Background

Fracture resistance of endodontically treated tooth is affected due to large cavity designs and access cavities and an appropriate material capable to resist fracture plays an important role. This review aims to evaluate the effect of fibre-reinforced composite (FRC) as a post-obturation material on fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth.

Objectives

To systematically gather and evaluate the fracture resistance of fibre-reinforced composite as a post-obturation restorative material in endodontically treated teeth.

Data Sources

A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Ebsco Host, Scopus, Google Scholar, Hinari and manual search library resources from 1st Jan 2000 to 30th November 2019 to identify appropriate studies.

Result

A total of 157 articles were examined out of which 55 articles were selected after reading the title. After removing the duplicates, 27 articles were screened for abstract and 1 article was eliminated as it did not meet the eligibility criteria. A thorough reading of the full text of the remaining 26 selected articles was assessed for eligibility. Amongst these, 1 article was then excluded from the study as the full text was not accessible. Lastly, 25 articles were included in the study.

Conclusion

FRC as a core material increases fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth but they do not have the fracture resistance similar to the intact tooth. Both polyethylene and short fibre-reinforced composites showed greater fracture resistance when compared to glass FRC and restoration without reinforcement. Also, the fracture resistance increases if restored with FRC along with retention slots and are placed on the occlusal third surfaces of cavities. Also, favourable fractures were most commonly seen and it usually occurred at the level of enamel and dentin and adhesive fractures were seen.

The Importance of Interfaces in Multi-Material Biofabricated Tissue Structures

Biofabrication exploits additive manufacturing techniques for creating 3D structures with a precise geometry that aim to mimic a physiological cellular environment and to develop the growth of native tissues. The most recent approaches of 3D biofabrication integrate multiple technologies into a single biofabrication platform combining different materials within different length scales to achieve improved construct functionality. However, the importance of interfaces between the different material phases, has not been adequately explored. This is known to determine material's interaction and ultimately mechanical and biological performance of biofabricated parts. In this review, this gap is bridged by critically examining the interface between different material phases in (bio)fabricated structures, with a particular focus on how interfacial interactions can compromise or define the mechanical (and biological) properties of the engineered structures. It is believed that the importance of interfacial properties between the different constituents of a composite material, deserves particular attention in its role in modulating the final characteristics of 3D tissue-like structures.

Evaluation of depth-wise post-gel polymerisation shrinkage behaviour of flowable dental composites

Short fibre reinforced flowable dental composites are gaining acceptance over particulate filled composites due to their competence to impart improved physio-mechanical properties and capability to prevent crack propagation. However, limited research exists to assess their overall post-gel shrinkage behaviour, which is an important factor to determine marginal seal around restoration and hence its longevity. In this paper, depth-wise post-gel shrinkage strain and the resulting factors such as degree of conversion and rheological behaviour of flowable fibre reinforced composite (FRC) containing 5% weight fraction of 5 μm diameter, 350 μm length S-Glass fibres in UDMA/TEGDMA mixture along with 50% strontium filler particles were investigated. Post-gel shrinkage strain was measured using an array of optical fibre Bragg grating sensors (FBGs) of diameter 250 μm and length 1 mm each embedded at three different depths (depth 0 mm, depth 2.5 mm and depth 5 mm from curing light tip) within the flowable dental composite samples. The rheological behaviour during the polymerisation process was carried out using dynamic oscillatory tests. To evaluate the conversion of CC during polymerisation, degree of conversion tests were conducted by using FTIR spectroscopy. The results obtained for FRC samples were further compared with that of particulate filled composite (PFC) samples, with 55% strontium filler particles only within the same resin system. The relationship between post-gel shrinkage strain at different depths, rheological behaviour and degree of conversion was also explored. The experimental results from the sensor embedded materials suggested that the post-gel shrinkage strain was higher at the top surface (depth 0 mm) and was 50% more than at the bottom surface (depth of 5 mm) for dental FRC as well as PFC samples. Further, similar flow behaviour and not significant different (p<0.05) degree of conversion (DC), post-gel shrinkage strain for dental PFC and FRC composites was observed, establishing a convincing positive relationship between all the key factors and further implying that replacement of fibres with fillers did not affect the overall post-gel polymerisation shrinkage behaviour in dental composites. This investigation has also demonstrated that fibre optic sensors-based shrinkage measurements can be an ideal technique to evaluate post-gel shrinkage performance of dental resins with PFCs or FRCs.

The Development of Filler Morphology in Dental Resin Composites: A Review

Dental resin composites (DRCs) with diverse fillers added are widely-used restorative materials to repair tooth defects. The addition of fillers brings an improvement in the mechanical properties of DRCs. In the past decade, diverse fillers have emerged. However, the change of emerging fillers mainly focuses on the chemical composition, while the morphologic characteristics changes are often ignored. The fillers with new morphologies not only have the advantages of traditional fillers (particles, fibrous filler, etc.), but also endow some additional functional characteristics (stronger bonding ability to resin matrix, polymerization resistance, and wear resistance, drug release control ability, etc.). Moreover, some new morphologies are closely related to the improvement of traditional fillers, porous filler vs. glass particles, core-sheath fibrous vs. fibrous, etc. Some other new morphology fillers are combinations of traditional fillers, UHA vs. HA particles and fibrous, tetrapod-like whisker vs. whisker and fibrous filler, mesoporous silica vs. porous and silica particles. In this review, we give an overall description and a preliminary summary of the fillers, as well as our perspectives on the future direction of the development of novel fillers for next-generation DRCs.

Performance of crowns cemented on a fiber-reinforced composite framework 5-unit implant-supported prostheses: in silico and fatigue analyses

OBJECTIVE

To characterize the biomechanical performance of fiber-reinforced composite 5-unit implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) receiving individually milled crowns by insilico and fatigue analyses.

METHODS

Eighteen implant-supported five-unit fiber-reinforced composite frameworks with an individually prepared abutment design were fabricated, and ninety resin-matrix ceramic crowns were milled to fit each abutment. FDPs were subjected to step-stress accelerated-life testing with load delivered at the center of the pontic and at 2nd molar and 1st premolar until failure. The reliability of the prostheses combining all loaded data and of each loaded tooth was estimated for a mission of 50,000 cycles at 300, 600 and 900 N. Weibull parameters were calculated and plotted. Fractographic and finite element analysis were performed.

RESULTS

Fatigue analysis demonstrated high probability of survival at 300 N, with no significant differences when the set load was increased to 600 and 900 N. 1st and 2nd molar dataset showed high reliability at 300 N, which remained high for the higher load missions; whereas 1st premolar dataset showed a significant decrease when the reliability at 300 N was compared to higher load missions. The characteristic-strength of the combined dataset was 1252 N, with 1st molar dataset presenting higher values relative to 2nd molar and 1st premolar, both significantly different. Failure modes comprised chiefly cohesive fracture within the crown material originated from cracks at the occlusal area, matching the maximum principal strain location.

SIGNIFICANCE

Five-unit implant-supported FDP with crowns individually cemented in a fiber-reinforced composite framework presented a high survival probability. Crown fracture comprised the main failure mode.

Characterization of Experimental Short-Fiber-Reinforced Dual-Cure Core Build-Up Resin Composites

As a core build-up material, dual-cured (DC) resin-based composites are becoming popular. The aim of this research was to investigate specific physical and handling properties of new experimental short-fiber-reinforced DC resin composites (SFRCs) in comparison to different commercial, conventional DC materials (e.g., Gradia Core, Rebilda DC, LuxaCore Z, and Visalys^® CemCore). Degree of monomer conversion (DC%) was determined by FTIR-spectrometry using either self- or light-curing mode. The flexural strength, modulus, and fracture toughness were calculated through a three-point bending setup. Viscosity was analyzed at room (22 °C) and mouth (35 °C) temperatures with a rotating disk rheometer. The surface microstructure of each resin composite was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance ANOVA (p = 0.05). The curing mode showed significant (p < 0.05) effect on the DC% and flexural properties of tested DC resin composites and differences were material dependent. SFRC exhibited the highest fracture toughness (2.3 MPa m^1/2) values and LuxaCore showed the lowest values (1 MPa m^1/2) among the tested materials (p < 0.05). After light curing, Gradia Core and SFRCs showed the highest flexural properties (p < 0.05), while the other resin composites had comparable values. The novel DC short-fiber-reinforced core build-up resin composite demonstrated super fracture toughness compared to the tested DC conventional resin composites.

Effect of cervical lesion centered access cavity restored with short glass fibre reinforced resin composites on fracture resistance in human mandibular premolars- an in vitro study

AIM

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of cervical lesion centered access cavity restored with short glass fibre reinforced resin materials in human mandibular premolars.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Sixty freshly extracted human mandibular premolars were collected and assigned to positive control group (G1- Intact teeth) and other experimental groups (G2, G3. G4, G5, G6), Traditional Access Cavity(TAC) and Cervical Lesion Centered Access Cavity(CLCAC). Following endodontic therapy, samples were grouped accordingly, G2-CLCAC without restoration (Negative Control), G3-CLCAC restored with conventional nano-hybrid composite (Tetric-N-Ceram), G4-TAC restored with short glass fibre reinforced resin composite (Ever-X Posterior), G5-CLCAC restored with short glass fibre reinforced resin composite (Ever-X Posterior), G6- CLCAC restored with individually formed unidirectional fibre-reinforced post (Everstick post) and short glass fibre-reinforced resin composite (Ever-X Posterior). The samples were thermocycled (35 °C/28s, 15 °C/2s, 35 °C/28s, 45 °C/2s/10,000 cycles) and cyclically fatigued(2,50,000 cycles/15-30N/2 Hz) and then subsequently loaded to failure. The mean load to fracture (Newtons) were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post HOC test and failure mode analysis was also done.

RESULTS

The mean fracture resistance of the CLCAC design restored with fibre reinforced materials was higher when compared to the TAC design but the difference was not statistically significant. The negative control group (CLCAC without restoration) showed significantly the least fracture resistance (P < 0.05) when compared to all the other groups except for group 3 (CLCAC restored with conventional composites).

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limitations of the study, it can be concluded that short glass fibre reinforced resin composites improved the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars irrespective of the type of access cavity designs. Favourable fractures were seen more in cervical lesion centered access cavity restored with short glass fibre reinforced composite materials. Nevertheless, the applicability of this design in multirooted teeth, canal cleanliness efficacy, and long term clinical performance are yet to be explored to complement this new access design.

Microtensile Bond Strength of Fiber-Reinforced and Particulate Filler Composite to Coronal and Pulp Chamber Floor Dentin

This ex vivo study aimed to compare the microtensile bond strength of fiber-reinforced and particulate filler composite to coronal and pulp chamber floor dentin using a self-etching adhesive system. Coronal dentin of 40 human molar teeth was exposed by cutting occlusal enamel with a low-speed saw. Teeth were then randomly divided into two groups (n = 20). The first group was left as is, while in the second group, pulp chamber floor dentin was exposed by trepanation. After placement of a self-etching adhesive system (G-aenial Bond, GC, Tokyo, Japan), groups were further divided into two sub-groups (n = 10) according to the type of composite: fiber-reinforced composite (EP, everX Posterior, GC, Tokyo, Japan) and particulate filler composite (GP, G-aenial Posterior, GC, Tokyo, Japan). Then, composite blocks were built up. Sticks (1.0 × 1.0 mm2) were obtained from each specimen by sectioning, then microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test was performed. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA test and Student's t-test (p < 0.05). μTBS values were 22.91 ± 14.66 and 24.44 ± 13.72 MPa on coronal dentin, 14.00 ± 5.83 and 12.10 ± 8.89 MPa on pulp chamber floor dentin for EP and GP, respectively. Coronal dentin yielded significantly higher μTBS than pulp chamber floor dentin (p < 0.05), independently from the tested composites.
