Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the fracture strength of teeth restored using fiber-reinforced direct restorative materials after endodontic treatment with a conservative mesio-occlusal access cavity design. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 100 extracted intact mandibular first molars were selected and distributed into a positive control group where teeth left intact and the following four test groups comprised of teeth with conservative mesio-occlusal access cavities that had undergone root canal treatment (n = 20/group): access cavity without restoration (negative control), bulk-fill resin composite with horizontal glass fiber post reinforcement, fiber-reinforced composite with bulk-fill resin and bulk-fill resin composite. Following thermocycling (10,000 cycles), fracture resistance was measured using a universal testing machine. Statistical analyses (one-way analysis of variance and the Tamhane test) were performed, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS Groups with minimally invasive access cavities had lower fracture strength than intact teeth, regardless of the restoration material (p < 0.05). Fiber-reinforced composite groups demonstrated higher fracture strength than bulk-fill resin composite alone (p < 0.05). Fracture types varied among groups, with restorable fractures predominant in the fiber-reinforced composite groups. CONCLUSION This study suggests that using fiber-reinforced composite materials, especially in combination with bulk-fill resin composites, can effectively enhance the fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth with conservative access cavities. However, using only bulk-fill resin composite is not recommended based on the fracture strength results. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE When teeth that undergo endodontic treatment are restored using a conservative access cavity design and fiber-reinforced composite materials, especially in combination with bulk-fill resin composites, the fracture strength of the teeth can be effectively increased.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the fluorescence of nine esthetic resin composite materials using two methods: spectrophotometry and photography analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three specimens were made for each shade of resin composite (61 shades from 9 resin composites), for a total of 183 specimens. To obtain a control group, the crowns of three sound human incisors were prepared to obtain both enamel and dentin specimens. Fluorescence was measured using two methods: (1) a Spectroshade Micro fluorescence spectrophotometer (MHT Optic Research, Niederhasli, Switzerland) and (2) a photograph analysis using Adobe Photoshop CC software (version 2019.0.0, Adobe Systems, Inc.). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS The results were statistically analyzed with an analysis of variance (α = 0.05) and with the Tukey-Kramer adjustment. The correlation between two techniques was analyzed by Pearson correlation test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Fluorescence was highly influenced by the brand of the resin composite and less influenced by the shade (chroma), except for opaquer and incisal shades, and there was almost no difference in opacity, except for incisal shades. There was a weak (r = -0.105) and statistically not significant correlation (p = 0.145) between photography analysis and spectrophotometry techniques. CONCLUSION The fluorescence of esthetic resin composites is more dependent on the brand than on the shade or opacity.

Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the effect of thickness on the translucency parameter (TP) and whiteness index for dentistry (WID) of single-shade resin composites compared with a multi-shade resin composite after thermocycling. A total of 100 resin composite samples of five brands (Filtek Z250, Omnichroma, Vittra APS Unique, Zenchroma, and Charisma Diamond One) with thicknesses of 2 mm and 4 mm were prepared (n=10). CIE L*a*b* coordinates were obtained using a spectrophotometer. The resin composite samples were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles. Before and after thermocycling, TP values were calculated with the CIEDE2000 formula, and whiteness values were calculated using the WID. The influence of thickness, resin composite, and aging on these variables was analyzed using the generalized linear model (p<0.05). Omnichroma and Filtek Z250 exhibited, respectively, the highest and the lowest TP00 values compared with the other resin materials (p<0.001). The TP00 values of Zenchroma and Diamond One were similar (p>0.05). Vittra APS Unique had a lower TP than Zenchroma and Diamond One (p<0.001). Before thermocycling, the highest WID showed the combination of Vittra APS Unique with thicknesses of 2 mm (48.33±1.18). After thermocycling, the highest WID was shown in the combination of Vittra APS Unique with thicknesses of 2 mm (45.33±0.55) and 4 mm (46.23±0.94) (p<0.001). After thermocycling, the lowest WID was for the combination of Filtek Z250 with thicknesses 2 mm (21.16±0.93) and 4 mm (20.70±0.91) (p<0.001). The TP and WID values of the resin composites varied across different composites and thicknesses. Single-shade resin composites of different thicknesses demonstrated higher translucency and whiteness values than multi-shade resin composite, both before and after thermocycling.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Assessment of the effect of incorporation of graphene oxide nanoparticles (GONPs), different concentrations into resin composite with different thicknesses on its color modulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS GONPs were prepared using the chemical reduction method and characterized using a transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The minimum concentrations of GONPs that provided the most effective antibacterial action (0.05 wt% and 0.2 wt%.) were prepared to be the concentration added to the tested resin composite. Calculations were done to find the required volume of the GONPs solution needed according to the mass of the resin composite. 70 nano-filled resin composite discs were prepared with 10 mm diameter × 3 mm height. 10 resin composite discs were prepared without GONPs incorporation and served as a control (G0). The other 60 resin composite specimens were divided into 2 equal groups (G1& G2) according to the concentration of the loaded nanoparticles in the specimens. Each group was divided into 3 equal subgroups according to the thickness of the resin composite containing GONPs; [T1: GONPs dispersed in the bottom 1 mm of the disc, while the top 2 mm of the disc was of resin composite only. T2: GONPs dispersed only in the bottom 2 mm of the disc and T3: GONPs dispersed in the total thickness of the disc (3 mm)]. ∆E values were calculated using a Vita Easy shade Spectrophotometer. RESULTS Incorporation of GONPs into resin composite induced significant color change and among all the 6 experimental groups, G1T1 group (of 0.05 wt% concentration GONPs dispersed only in the bottom 1 mm of the disc) showed a non-significant color change. CONCLUSION Dispersion of GONPs has a detectable effect on the color change of resin composite. Meanwhile, dispersion in low concentration for only the bottom 1 mm thickness of resin composite has an undetectable effect on its color.

Abstract
This study aimed to (1) comparatively analyze properties of Sr- and Mg-substituted hydroxyapatite (HAP)-based dental inserts; (2) evaluate insert bonding to restorative materials, and (3) evaluate the effect of doped HAP inserts on fracture resistance (FR) of human molars with large occlusal restorations. By ion-doping with Sr or Mg, 3 insert types were obtained and characterized using XRD, SEM, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness. Shear bond strength (SBS) was determined between acid etched or unetched inserts and following materials: Maxcem cement (Kerr); Filtek Z250 (3M) bonded with Single Bond Universal (SBU; 3M) or Clearfil Universal (Cf; Kuraray). Modified Class I cavities were prepared in 16 intact molars and restored using insert + composite or composite only (control) (n = 8/group). FR of restored molars was determined by static load until fracture upon thermal cycling. Fracture toughness was similar between Sr/Mg-doped inserts (0.94-1.04 MPam-1/2 p = .429). Mg-doped inserts showed greater hardness (range 4.78-5.15 GPa) than Sr6 inserts (3.74 ± 0.31 GPa; p < .05). SBS for SBU and Cf adhesives (range 7.19-15.93 MPa) was higher than for Maxcem (range 3.07-5.95 MPa) (p < .05). There was no significant difference in FR between molars restored with insert-containing and control restorations (3.00 ± 0.30 kN and 3.22 ± 0.42 kN, respectively; p > .05). HAP-based inserts doped with Mg/Sr had different composition and mechanical properties. Adhesive bonding to inserts resulted in greater bond strength than cementation, which may be improved by insert acid-etching. Ion-doped HAP inserts did not affect FR of restored molars. In conclusion, HAP-based dental inserts may potentially replace dentin in large cavities, without affecting fracture resistance of restored teeth.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of dental adhesive color on the chromatic stability and fluorescence intensity of composite resin restorations of different thicknesses. Ninety bovine enamel samples were obtained and restored with resin composite varying thicknesses of restorative material and enamel (1.0 mm enamel and 1.0 mm composite; 1.5 mm enamel and 0.5 mm composite; 0.5 mm enamel and 1.5 mm composite). The restorations were made of composite resin (Opallis E-bleach H) using different types of dental adhesives: Ambar, Ambar APS, and Single Bond Universal (n=10). The samples were subjected to color measurement tests in a spectrophotometer using CIEDE2000 and fluorescence intensity measurements before and after aging in a red wine coloring solution. Data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). There were no statistically significant changes in color stability or fluorescence intensity for restorations made of different materials or thicknesses (p>0.05). Single Bond Universal showed greater color stability at 0.5 mm thickness (ΔE00 = 4.4 ± 1.6) compared to other thicknesses of the same material (p=0.003), as well as a greater difference in fluorescence intensity after aging at 1.5 mm thickness (-414.9 ± 103.8) compared to other materials (p=0.0002). Overall, it was concluded that the different adhesive systems did not influence the color stability and fluorescence of restorations of different thicknesses.

Abstract
(1) Background: A newer class of flowable bulk-fill resin-based composite (BF-RBC) materials requires no capping layer (Palfique Bulk flow, PaBF, Tokuyama Dental, Tokyo, Japan). The objective of this study was to assess the flexural strength, microhardness, surface roughness, and color stability of PaBF compared to two BF-RBCs with different consistencies. (2) Methods: PaBF, SDR Flow composite (SDRf: Charlotte, NC, USA) and One Bulk fill (OneBF: 3M, St. Paul, MN, USA) were evaluated for flexural strength with a universal testing machine, surface microhardness using a pyramidal Vickers indenter, and surface roughness using a high-resolution three-dimensional non-contact optical profiler, a and clinical spectrophotometer to measure the color stability of each BF-RBC material. (3) Results: OneBF presented statistically higher flexural strength and microhardness than PaBF or SDRf. Both PaBF and SDRf presented significantly less surface roughness compared with OneBF. Water storage significantly reduced the flexural strength and increased the surface roughness of all tested materials. Only SDRf showed significant color change after water storage. (4) Conclusions: The physico-mechanical properties of PaBF do not support its use without a capping layer in the stress bearing areas. PaBF showed less flexural strength compared with OneBF. Therefore, its use should be limited to a small restoration with minimal occlusal stresses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To map the existing evidence regarding the masking ability of resin composites. OVERVIEW The literature search was conducted electronically, based on the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews-online protocol at https://osf.io/m2h67/ with no language or time restrictions. Two independent reviewers conducted the screening, and a third reviewer was consulted in case of disagreement. Studies that evaluated resin composite masking ability regardless of background, application technique, thickness, or number of layers were selected. The search found 2995 potentially eligible studies. After removal of duplicates (657), irrelevant articles (2323), 15 citations met the eligibility criteria based on title and abstract, and eight studies were included based on full text analysis (seven in vitro, and one case report). Acceptable masking ability is obtained by one layer of opaque shade resin composite or by the layering technique. A black background is masked with 1.0- to 2.0 mm-thick layers of opaque shade resin composites. Masking of the C4 background is achieved with one layer of 0.5- to 1.5 mm-thick opaque shade resin composite or by the layering technique using different combinations of enamel body and dentin shades with a final thickness of 1.5 mm. CONCLUSIONS Acceptable masking of C4 shade background is achieved with one layer of opaque shade composite at least 0.5 mm-thick or by different combinations of the layering technique, with a final thickness of 1.5 mm. Acceptable masking of the black background of the oral cavity is achieved with a resin composite of at least 1.0 mm opaque shade. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The thickness of the resin composite layer required to achieve adequate masking is variable and depends on the translucency/opacity of the tested resin composites and the background shade.

Abstract
Few long-term studies assess the discoloration induced by hydraulic calcium silicate-based cement on dental structures. In addition, as far as we know, no long-term study has assessed the discoloration induced by these cement on composite resin. This in vitro study aimed to assess, during a period of two years, the discoloration potential of different hydraulic calcium silicate-based cements (hCSCs) on the enamel/dentin structure and composite resin restoration. A total of 40 enamel/dentin discs were obtained from bovine incisors, and 40 composite resin discs (10 mm in diameter × 2 mm thick) were fabricated. A 0.8 mm-deep cavity was made in the center of each disc and filled with the following hCSCs (n=10): Original MTA (Angelus); MTA Repair HP (Angelus); NeoMTA Plus (Avalon); and Biodentine (Septodont). An initial color measurement was performed (T0 - baseline). After 7, 15, 30, 45, 90, 300 days, and two years, new color measurements were performed to determine the color (ΔE00), lightness (ΔL'), chroma (ΔC'), hue differences (ΔH'), and whiteness index (WID). For enamel/dentin, the ΔE00 was significant among groups and periods (p<0.05). NeoMTA Plus had the greatest ΔE00. The NeoMTA Plus group had the greatest ΔE00 after two years for composite resin. Significant reduction in lightness was observed for all groups after two years (p<0.05). The most significant WID values were observed after 30 days for Biodentine (enamel/dentin) and MTA Repair HP groups (composite resin) (p<0.05). The hCSCs changed the colorimetric behavior of both substrates, leading to greater darkening over time. The Bi2O3 in the Original MTA seems relevant in the short periods of color change assessment.

Abstract
Background The structure of bulk-fill resin composites differs from that of their conventional counterparts, but how this difference affects the color stability of the former after staining and bleaching is unclear. Accordingly, this study was aimed at investigating color change in nine bulk-fill resin composites and one nanohybrid resin composite treated with hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide after staining with tea, coffee, and red wine. Methods Eighty specimens were prepared from each resins [Clearfil Majesty Posterior (CMP), SDR flow+ (SDR), FiltekTMBulk-Fill Flowable Restorative (FBF), Reveal HD Bulk (RHD), Beautifil-Bulk Restorative (BBR), Tetric EvoCeram® Bulk Fill (TEC), SonicFill™2 (SF2), everX Posterior™ (eXP), X-tra base (XB), and Venus® Bulk Fill (VBF)]. Following baseline color measurements, the specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups according to immersion solutions and distilled water as the control. At the end of a 30-day test period, color measurements were repeated, and color change values (∆E00) were calculated. Each resin group was then divided into 2 subgroups (with 10 specimens per group) on the basis of bleaching agent (Opalescence Boost 40%, Opalescence PF 16%). Following bleaching application, ∆E00 and changes of whiteness (∆WID1 = WIDbleaching-WIDbaseline, ΔWID2 = WIDbleaching-WIDstaining) values were recorded. Two- and three-way analyses of variance and Tukey’s post hoc test were performed, with a P < 0.05 regarded as indicative of significance. Results After immersion in distilled water, tea, and red wine, the highest ΔE00 values were observed in eXP (P < 0.05). Resin materials immersed in coffee and tea exhibited statistically higher ∆E00 values than those immersed in red wine except for eXP, TEC, and FBF (P < 0.05). For eXP, the highest ∆E00 values were recorded in distilled water. For TEC and FBF, there was no statistically significant difference among the immersion solutions and distilled water (P > 0.05). For all the resins and staining beverages, no statistically significant difference in ∆WID1 and ∆WID2 values were detected between bleaching agents (P > 0.05). All the ΔWID1 values were above the whiteness perceptibility threshold. Conclusion The bulk-fill materials were more resistant to discoloration and bleaching procedures than the conventional resin composites. Coffee and tea caused more staining than distilled water and red wine generally. The type of bleaching procedure had no effect on the whiteness of the tested materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluate the masking ability of bleach-shade resin composites applied by multilayering techniques over colored substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS Disc-shaped specimens were fabricated from bleach-shade resin composites using different multilayering techniques. Substrates were produced in opaque ceramic discs simulating colored substrates (A2, A3, A3.5, C2, C3, C4) and a bleached tooth (0M1). Color coordinates were obtained using a reflectance spectrophotometer. Color difference was calculated by CIEDE2000 using coordinates of 0 M1 ceramic as standard reference. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (p ≤ 0.05). Masking ability interpretation was based on perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. RESULTS All combinations presented ΔE00 above the acceptable threshold (ΔE00 >1.8), ranging from 2.49 to 7.42, regardless of the restorative system, multilayering strategy or substrate color. Multilayering combinations placed over A2, A3 and A3.5 were moderately (1.8<ΔE00 ≤3.6) and clearly unacceptable (3.6<ΔE00 ≤5.4), combinations associated with C2, C3 and C4 were clearly unacceptable and, extremely unacceptable (ΔE00 >5.4). Lower ΔE00 was observed for combinations with 0.5 mm extra white enamel layer (2.49), or 1.0 mm white dentin layer (2.69), over A2 and A3.5 substrates. Lightness difference showed the greatest contribution to ΔE00 . CONCLUSIONS Bleach-shade resin composite systems applied by the multilayering technique were not able to ensure effective masking ability. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Bleach-shade resin composites applied with different combinations of the multilayering technique were not effective in masking colored substrates. Alternative strategies, techniques and dental materials should be explored to obtain acceptable masking.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of a short fiber-reinforced resin composite: everX-Posterior and compare it with two bulk-fill composites, namely, Filtek Bulk-fill and Beautifil-Bulk, which are intended for large posterior restorations. METHODS Investigated properties were flexural strength, flexural modulus, surface roughness, volumetric shrinkage and depth of cure. Scanning electron microscopy images of each specimen after the flexural test were used for cross-sectional comparison. Results were analyzed using ANOVA following Tukey post-hoc test. RESULTS Flexural strength of everX-Posterior was comparable with two other resin composites, showing higher flexural modulus. EverX-Posterior showed the highest surface roughness after polishing and the lowest volumetric shrinkage (2.29%) among all composites used in this study. Data also showed that the everX-Posterior depth of cure was 4.24 mm, which was the highest among the three groups. CONCLUSION Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that everX-Posterior as a short fiber-reinforced composite showed improvements and satisfactory performance in mechanical and physical properties, which make it a reliable base material candidate for large posterior restorations.

Abstract
The application of sintered calcium phosphate dental inserts in the central part of tooth cavities can reduce amount of embedded dental composite and polymerization shrinkage of final dental fillings. The aim of this study was to analyze comparatively physico-chemical and mechanical properties of dental inserts and shear bond strength (SBS) between three dissimilar hydroxyapatite-based dental inserts and different restorative materials, after application of different clinical protocols. Starting from two different hydroxyapatite nano powders and nanostructured stabilized zirconia (YSZ), monophasic two-step sintered dense HAp inserts (TSSHAp), biphasic single-step sintered controlled porous inserts (HAp/TCp), and single-step sintered reinforced HAp/YSZ inserts were processed and characterized. Obvious differences in the microstructure of inserts surface were visualized after etching with 37% phosphoric acid. Fracture toughness of sintered inserts was ranged between 1.01 and 1.85 MPam1/2 (maximum value in the case of HAp/YSZ), while hardness values were in the range of 3.71-5.22 GPa (maximum value in the case of TSSHAp). Acid etching before application improved SBS between inserts and Maxcem compared to direct cement application. TSSHAp and HAP/TCp inserts showed comparable and relatively high SBS values, certainly higher compared to HAp/YSZ inserts. Slightly higher SBS values were measured in the case of TSSHAp insert group, and the highest mean SBS value of 18.51 MPa was determined between TSSHAp inserts and Filtek Z250_SBU following the "self-etch" protocol.

Abstract
To evaluate the influence of a different order of dentin and enamel layers on stratification appearance of different resin composites. 144 Dentin (D) and Enamel (E) composite samples (Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Premium, Brilliant EverGlow, Estelite Asteria), 1 mm thick, were divided into 12 configurations for each composite, with Enamel-Dentin-Dentin-Enamel (EDDE) assumed as target. The colour specification was conducted using a spectrophotometer, elaborating the results with the CIE L*a*b* colour coordinates and calculating the colour difference in terms of [Formula: see text] quantity. A value of this last major of 3.3 was considered not clinically acceptable. Moreover, data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc test (P < 0.05). For Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Premium and Brilliant EverGlow, six configurations showed [Formula: see text] > 3.3 compared to gold standard EDDE. [Formula: see text] was influenced especially by b* and L* coordinates (P < 0.05). EDED showed no visual difference (0 < [Formula: see text] < 1.1) for both composites. For Estelite Asteria, two configurations reported [Formula: see text] > 3.3 compared to EDDE. In particular, the L* coordinate influenced [Formula: see text] results (P < 0.05). EDDD was the best configuration (0 < [Formula: see text] < 1.1). Within the limits of a vitro study, Brilliant EG showed more dependence from order and thickness of stratification (resulting more similar to Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Premium); therefore, it could be indicated for more complex aesthetic restorations. Estelite Asteria seems to be able to balance small differences in thickness of dentin and enamel layers, and consequently, it is more indicated to different clinical situations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine color changes in bulk-fill composite and universal composite restorations with dissimilar dentin replacement materials in extracted teeth after staining in red wine. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cylindrical, 4 mm deep, class I cavities were prepared in 140 human molars. Bottom 2 mm was restored with Biodentine (Septodont), everX posterior (GC) or experimental HAP inserts. Each dentin replacement material was covered with a 2-mm layer of a universal composite Filtek Z250 or Z550 (3M ESPE) or Gradia Posterior (GC). Groups combining top composite layer and the underlying dentin replacement were designated as "composite_dentin replacement." Filtek Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill (Ivoclar Vivadent) were placed as a single 4-mm layer. Color measurements were performed using Vita Easyshade 4.0 (Vita Zahnfabrik) initially and after 48-hours storage in red wine at 37°C. RESULTS Color differences (ΔEoo ) ranged between 2.1 ± 0.7 (Z250_HAP) and 7.8 ± 1.1 (Z550_everX). EverX resulted in higher ΔEoo of the overlying composite than HAP (P < .001) and Biodentine (P = .006). Generally, ΔEoo was affected more by decreasing lightness (ΔL') than changes in chroma (ΔC'). CONCLUSIONS EverX resulted in higher ΔEoo of the restoration than Biodentine and experimental HAP after staining in red wine. No significant differences in ΔEoo may be expected in different composites with the same underlying dentin replacement material. The same was generally true for bulk-fill and universal composites. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Similar extent of color changes may be expected in bulk-fill and universal composites. Highly translucent everX might exhibit greater color differences irrespective of the capping composite than non-translucent materials. Clinicians have a wider choice of composite materials to cover a particular dentin replacement material, for example, everX or Biodentine, as similar color differences may be expected in various overlying composite brands.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the layering technique to mask a discolored background (C4) after one year of water aging. The technique was used with three resin composite restorative systems (IPS Empress Direct, Charisma Diamond, and Filtek Z350XT). Ninety 1.5-mm-thick specimens were divided into groups and subgroups according to the restorative system and resin composite shade combination used in the layering technique (enamel, body, and dentin). The color measurements were made by reflection spectrophotometer (SP60, EX-Rite) over the C4 substrate at two time points: after 24-hour water immersion (T0) and after one-year water aging (T1). The masking ability was evaluated by calculating the ΔE between an inherent color background and a C4 background at T0 and T1. CIELAB and CIEDE2000 formulas were used for comparative analysis between T0 and T1 color measurements. Analysis of variance and Turkey's post hoc test (a=0.05) were performed to analyze ΔEab and ΔE00 mean values. The Z350XT restorative system presented adequate masking ability in the combinations of 0.5 mm body + 1.0 mm dentin, 0.5 mm enamel + 1.0 mm dentin, and 1.5 mm dentin after 24-hour water immersion. The masking ability was affected negatively by water aging in most of the combinations. The IPS Empress Direct was the only system that remained stable after aging in the combinations of 0.5 mm enamel + 1.0 mm dentin and + 1.5 mm dentin (p=0.05 and p=0.47 for CIELAB; p=0.15 and p=0.51 for CIEDE2000), although it did not present adequate masking ability in both time points. None of the combinations of any system presented adequate masking ability after prolonged water aging.

Abstract
Current evidence indicates that the minimum light intensity of photo curing units required to polymerize in a reliable way a composite resin, in increments of 2mm, is 300mW/cm2. The recent introduction of new generations of composite resin materials for large volume increments, partially contrasts with ISO 4049 (2009), calling for the use of light intensity of 1,000mW/cm2. Therefore, it is considered relevant to carry out periodic measurements of the emission intensity of light-curing units of clinical use. The aim of this study was to test the intensity [mW/cm2] of a representative sample of tungsten-halogen and LED photopolymerization units used in private and public health service in different areas of the Valparaíso Region in Chile. This was achieved through the use of dental radiometers, without considering the variables of intensity modification over time (either spontaneously, by undesirable inherent characteristics of the device, or by programs of intensity modification in time), or the density of accumulated power needed. This in vitro diagnostic test, evaluated a sample of 507 units, 107 halogen and 400 LED, for a period of around one month, using two radiometers as measuring instruments. For LED units the Bluephase Meter® radiometer, from Ivoclar-VivadentTM was used, and for halogen units we used the Coltolux® from ColténeTM. As a result, 85% of the LED and halogen units achieved the minimum requirements of intensity needed for the polymerization of conventional dental biomaterials. However, only 25% from the tested units achieved a power density of 1,000mW/cm2.

Abstract
This study determined the reduction threshold in thickness of the dentin shade composite necessary to result in perceptible and acceptable color changes on simulated restorations. Three composite systems (Charisma Diamond, IPS Empress Direct, and Filtek Z350 XT) were evaluated using cylinder-shaped specimens built-up with dentin and enamel shades. The opacity of the composites was assessed using 1.0 mm thick specimens over black and white backgrounds. A baseline color was established for each system by combining 1.0 mm thick enamel shade with 3.0 mm of dentin shade cylinders over a dark background (n = 9). Then, the color changes (∆E00) caused by sequential 0.1 mm reductions on dentin shade cylinders were calculated. Opacity changes on dentin shade cylinders and combined enamel-dentin pair cylinders were also assessed after each thickness reduction. Polynomial regression was performed with averages of ∆E00 as a function of thickness of dentin shade cylinders; and acceptability (∆E = 1.77) and perceptibility (∆E = 0.81) thresholds were calculated. Linear regressions were also performed for ∆E00 as function of opacity of dentin shade cylinders and combined enamel-dentin pair of cylinders. Except for Charisma, enamel shades presented the lowest opacity than dentin one. Perceptible and acceptable color changes were observed for dentin shade cylinders thinner than 2.0-2.4 mm and 1.1-1.4 mm, respectively, were used. No difference among the composite systems was observed. In conclusion, reductions on dentin shade composite lower than 0.6-mm did not yield perceptible color changes, and clinically significant color changes only were observed within reductions higher than 1.6-mm.

Influence of Acid, Ethanol, and Anthocyanin Pigment on the Optical and Mechanical Properties of a Nanohybrid Dental Composite Resin. MATERIALS 2018; 11:ma11071234. Abstract
This study investigated the influences of acidity, ethanol, and pigment on the optical properties, microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) of a nanohybrid dental composite resin. A total of 108 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated using a nanohybrid dental composite and allocated into 36 different storage solutions according to the levels of pH (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.5), ethanol (0%, 20%, and 40%), and anthocyanin pigment (0%, 2.5%, and 12.5%). Measurements of the colorimetric parameter and the amount of color change (ΔE), translucency parameter (TP), microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) were performed at 24 h (baseline), 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-weeks. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey honestly significant difference test and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out (α = 0.05). Pigment of 12.5% or 40% ethanol significantly increased the ΔE (P < 0.001, P = 0.048, respectively). Pigment of 2.5% or 12.5% significantly decreased the TP (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Microhardness of composite resin stored in pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 solution was lower than that for pH 5.5 (P < 0.001). Pigment, ethanol, and pH did not influence the Ra. TP change and ΔE, and Ra and ΔE had a significant positive correlation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, pigment and ethanol levels influenced the optical properties and acidity affected the microhardness of composite resin.
