Abstract
Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders, affecting 10-15% of the global population. Because classical remedies used to treat insomnia have various side effects, new therapeutics for insomnia are attracting attention. In the present study, we found that N2-Ethyl-N4-(furan-2-ylmethyl) quinazoline-2,4-diamine (AR-001) has adenosine A1 receptor agonistic activity and exhibits hypnotic efficacy by decreasing sleep onset latency and increasing total sleep time in a pentobarbital-induced sleep model. This hypnotic effect of AR-001 was significantly inhibited by the adenosine A1 receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX). As a result of immunohistochemistry, AR-001 was shown to increase neural activity in the sleep-promoting region, ventrolateral preoptic nucleus (VLPO), and decrease neural activity in the wake-promoting region, basal forebrain (BF), and lateral hypothalamus (LH), and that these effects of AR-001 were significantly inhibited by DPCPX treatment. In addition, AR-001 increased adenosine A1 receptor mRNA levels in the hypothalamus. In conclusion, this study suggests that AR-001 has a hypnotic effect, at least partially, through adenosine A1 receptor and may have therapeutic potential for insomnia.

Abstract
Previous research has shown that sleep deprivation, low quality sleep or inconvenient sleeping times are associated with lower quality of life. However, research of the longitudinal effects of sleep on quality of life is scarce. Hence, we know very little about the long-term effect of changes in sleep duration, sleep quality and the time when individuals sleep on quality of life. Using longitudinal data from three waves of the Czech Household Panel Study (2018-2020) containing responses from up to 4,523 respondents in up to 2,155 households, the study examines the effect of changes in sleep duration, sleep quality and social jetlag on satisfaction with life, happiness, work stress, subjective health and wellbeing. Although sleep duration and timing are important, panel analyses reveal that sleep quality is the strongest predictor of all sleep variables in explaining both within-person and between-person differences in quality of life indicators.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subjective well-being plays a key role in health. The objectives of this study are to analyse the longitudinal associations between subjective well-being dimensions and healthy behaviours, and to examine gender differences. METHOD A representative sample of 1,190 Spanish non-institutionalised adults aged 50+ were interviewed over a 6-year follow-up period. The Cantril scale was used to measure evaluative well-being. The Day Reconstruction Method measured experienced well-being. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was used, whereas fruit and vegetables, tobacco and alcohol consumption, and sleep quality were self-reported. The Generalised Estimating Equation was calculated. RESULTS Women show significantly worse subjective well-being than men longitudinally. Higher scores in life satisfaction and positive affect were significantly related to a higher level of physical activity and better-quality sleep for both women and men. Associations between a higher life satisfaction and an adequate intake of fruits and vegetables and being a non-smoker was only found in women (OR = 1.05; 95% IC = 1.00, 1.10 and OR = 1.16; 95% IC = 1.09, 1.23, respectively). CONCLUSION Subjective well-being levels and frequencies in healthy behaviours are different in women and men. Subjective well-being interventions should take into account these differences in the frequency of healthy-unhealthy behaviours.

Abstract
Sleep is the most important factor reflecting the level of psychophysical well-being of a person and influencing him/her to the same extent. The greater susceptibility to sleep disturbances in patients with disabilities is associated with numerous factors. In the existing literature, there are few studies of insomnia in people with neurological disabilities. This article presents a current view on sleep disorders in disabled people and methods for their treatment.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that Internet game disorder (IGD) is a significant risk factor of subjective well-being among adolescents. However, there are few studies about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship. This study examined the mediating role of sleep quality in the relationship between IGD and adolescent subjective well-being, and the moderating role of self-control in this mediational process. We collected data from 2,767 Chinese adolescents (mean age = 14.42 years, SD = 1.55) to test our theoretical model. Those adolescents completed self-reported questionnaires on IGD, subjective well-being, sleep quality, and self-control, respectively. After controlling for demographic variables, IGD was negatively associated with adolescent subjective well-being. Mediation analysis indicates that sleep quality partially mediates the association between IGD and adolescent subjective well-being. Tests of moderated mediation further reveal that the mediated path was also moderated by self-control. Specifically, these effects are stronger in adolescents with higher self-control, manifesting as cognitive dissonance. These findings advance our knowledge of how and when IGD relates to subjective well-being among adolescents. We discussed implications and limitations of this study.

Abstract
Introduction Valeriana officinalis is known to be one of the most famous herbal supplements for the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. Despite its widespread use in most countries all around the world, there is little scientific information and research on how this medication affects sleep patterns, and there are almost no studies on its effects on the characteristics of sleep spindles. Material and Methods The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of Valerian extract (VAL) on sleep spindles and induced anxiety in chronic neuropathic pain model in rats. 24 male rats were divided into three groups: neuropathic group (n=9) in which the rats underwent chronic constriction injury (CCI), sham group (n=7) in which the sciatic nerves of the animals were exposed without any constriction and also fed with the vehicle, and the third group was under CCI condition and treated with Valerian (n=8). All the rats underwent electrode implant surgery so that we could record electroencephalogram and electromyography waves. In all the three groups, EEG and EMG recordings were recorded three times (150min each time). The initial recording was just prior to the CCI surgery and the rest were 3 and 6 days following CCI surgery. Moreover, cold allodynia and elevated plus maze tests were performed 3 and 6 days following the CCI surgery. Results Valerian treatment could repair the allodynia induced by neuropathy. On the other hand, by Valerian treatment (400mg/kg) during neuropathy, the REM sleep, decreased and the non-REM sleep increased. Moreover, there was an increment in sleep spindle density and spindle frequency even in neuropathic condition. Discussion This herbal supplement improves the quality of sleep in neuropathy conditions.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Lactobacillus brevis-fermented γ-aminobutyric acid (LB-GABA) on sleep behaviors in invertebrate and vertebrate models. In Drosophila melanogaster, LB-GABA-treated group showed an 8-9%-longer sleep duration than normal group did. LB-GABA-treated group also showed a 46.7% lower level of nighttime activity with a longer (11%) sleep duration under caffeine-induced arousal conditions. The LB-GABA-mediated inhibition of activity was confirmed as a reduction of total movement of flies using a video tracking system. In the pentobarbital-induced sleep test in mice, LB-GABA (100 mg/kg) shortened the time of onset of sleep by 32.2% and extended sleeping time by 59%. In addition, mRNA and protein level of GABAergic/Serotonergic neurotransmitters were upregulated following treatment with LB-GABA (2.0%). In particular, intestine- and brain-derived GABAA protein levels were increased by sevenfold and fivefold, respectively. The electroencephalography (EEG) analysis in rats showed that LB-GABA significantly increased non-rapid eye movement (NREM) (53%) with the increase in theta (θ, 59%) and delta (δ, 63%) waves, leading to longer sleep time (35%), under caffeine-induced insomnia conditions. LB-GABA showed a dose-dependent agonist activity on human GABAA receptor with a half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of 3.44 µg/mL in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK293) cells.

Abstract
The SN/S and LBP risk was higher in the PL than in the GL group. Four positive predictors (life satisfaction, hours of sleep, exercise habits, physical fitness) are important factors. Health staff should advise on workers’ individual lifestyle.
This longitudinal study was conducted from 2002 to 2018 and aimed to investigate predictive lifestyle factors for the occurrence of subjective musculoskeletal symptoms. The participants came from several employers in Japan. Setting 2002 as the baseline, we performed logistic regression analyses using lifestyle questionnaire items as explanatory variables and Stiff neck/shoulders (SN/S) and Lower back pain (LBP) as objective variables (n = 16,748). Workers who responded positively to good lifestyle items with an odds ratio < 1.0 and those who did not were classified in the Good (GL) and Poor lifestyle groups (PL), respectively. The survival period between the groups was compared using the log-rank test and Cox hazard regression analysis with propensity score matching (n = 3,593). Based on the Cox hazard regression analysis results, the risk of SN/S was about 2.54 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.80–3.59) times higher for PL than for GL (p < 0.001). Similarly, after propensity score matching, the risk was about 2.33 (95% CI: 1.07–5.10) times higher for PL than for GL (p < 0.05). Further, LBP risk was about 2.45 (95% CI: 1.67–3.58) times higher for PL than for GL (p < 0.001). Similarly, after propensity score matching, the risk was about 3.50 (95% CI: 1.60–7.68) times higher for PL than for GL (p < 0.01). This study highlighted that workers with four good lifestyle factors (life satisfaction, hours of sleep, exercise habits, and physical fitness) presented reduced risk of subjective musculoskeletal symptom occurrence. To prevent musculoskeletal symptoms, physicians and occupational health staff should advise on workers’ individual lifestyle.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the beneficial effect of Valerian/Cascade mixture on sleeping in mammal models. In pentobarbital-induced sleep model, Valerian, Cascade, and Valerian/Cascade mixture significantly reduced the latency time for sleeping, and total sleeping time effectively increased in these sample groups compared with the control. Valerian/Cascade mixture increased sleep duration by 37%. The mixture significantly increased the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep time by 53% compared with the control, while REM sleeping time was decreased by 33% with Valerian/Cascade mixture, in Electroencephalography (EEG) analysis, resulting in the increase of total sleep time and the decrease of awakening. This sleep-promoting effect was obvious in caffeine-induced awakening model; Valerian, Cascade, and the mixture significantly enhanced NREM and total sleep time, which were reduced by caffeine. Caffeine-induced increase of awakening was effectively deceased to the normal level by these three samples. In particular, delta wave responsible for deep sleep in NREM was greatly increased by the mixture in both normal and caffeine-induced awake models. This sleep-promoting effect of Valerian/Cascade mixture was shown to be due to the upregulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor (GABAAR). Valerian/Cascade mixture showed 91% binding capacity to GABAA-BZD receptor. Two compounds, Valerenic acid and Xanthohumol, were shown to significantly contribute to the binding activity of Valerian/Cascade mixture on the GABA receptor.
