Abstract
Deficits in social cognition are seen in both people living with HIV (PWH) and people with a history of methamphetamine (METH) dependence. Dually affected individuals may experience additive negative effects on social cognition due to these conditions. We evaluated social cognition in 4 diagnostic groups (HIV-/METH-, HIV-/METH+, HIV+/METH-, HIV+/METH+). First, we used traditional social-emotional functioning assessments, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and the Faux Pas Task, to determine any significant effects of METH dependence and HIV on social cognition. Next, we quantified social cognition using the Human Behavioral Pattern Monitor by evaluating social behavior represented by interaction with novel objects. METH dependence significantly affected social-emotional functions and HIV significantly affected on object interactions, however no significant additive effects were observed using these methods. The nuanced relationship between HIV and METH dependence suggests that other factors (i.e., adaptive life skills) likely mediate social cognition-related behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The high rate of treatment failure is a common problem in the treatment of methamphetamine use. Therefore, the aim of this research is to identify the most common causes of relapse in methamphetamine users. METHOD This is a qualitative study and of content analysis type. Information was collected using purposeful sampling and through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The statistical population consisted of all people with the methamphetamine-use disorder in 2022 who were in the abstinence phase and participated in the meetings of the Narcotics Anonymous (NA) Center of Bojnord. Theoretical sampling continued until data saturation. A total of 10 one-on-one interviews were conducted, each lasting between 45 to 80 min. Additionally, two focus group interviews were conducted with six members in each group, lasting between 95 to 110 min and data saturation was achieved through these interviews. Data analysis was done using the content analysis method (Sterling). Recoding and Holsti's method were used to measure reliability; validity was then calculated through content validity assessment. FINDINGS The results of the thematic analysis showed that laps and relapse factors were identified and categorized into 5 organizing themes, including negative emotional states, positive emotional states, negative physical states, interpersonal factors, and environmental factors, consisting of 39 basic themes. RESULT Identifying the risk factors leading to laps and relapse in methamphetamine users and increasing the knowledge in this field can lay the groundwork for preventive therapeutic interventions in this community.

Abstract
The neurovascular units (NVU) are the minimal functional units of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), composed of endothelial cells, pericytes, astrocytes, microglia, neurons, and the basement membrane. The BBB serves as an important interface for immune communication between the brain and peripheral circulation. Disruption of the NVU by the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) induces dysfunction of the BBB and triggers inflammatory responses, which can lead to the development of neurocognitive impairments collectively known as HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Methamphetamine (METH) use disorder is a frequent comorbidity among individuals infected with HIV-1. METH use may be associated not only with rapid HIV-1 disease progression but also with accelerated onset and increased severity of HAND. However, the molecular mechanisms of METH-induced neuronal injury and cognitive impairment in the context of HIV-1 infection are poorly understood. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the signaling pathways mediating synergistic impairment of the BBB and neuronal injury induced by METH and HIV-1, potentially accelerating the onset or severity of HAND in HIV-1-positive METH abusers. We also discuss potential therapies to limit neuroinflammation and NVU damage in HIV-1-infected METH abusers.

Abstract
Methamphetamine (meth) use among men who have sex with men (MSM) has been documented to be associated with HIV transmission among those who are HIV-negative and worsening HIV outcomes among those who are HIV-positive. Recent media reports have suggested recent increases in meth use in New York City (NYC), particularly among Hispanic/Latino and Black MSM. Using serial cross-sectional data from 2004 to 2017, we aim to describe trends in meth use and describe racial/ethnic patterns among MSM in NYC. Overall, we observed a decrease in meth use among MSM from 2004 to 2011 and an increase from 2011 to 2017. When stratified by race/ethnicity, use among White MSM decreased. Beginning in 2008, use among both Hispanic/Latino and Black MSM increased over time. These data provide more evidence that meth use may be increasing in Hispanic/Latino and Black MSM. Culturally-tailored and status-neutral interventions should be explored.

Abstract
HIV infection and methamphetamine (METH) use are highly comorbid and represent a significant public health problem. Both conditions are known to negatively impact a variety of brain functions. One brain function that may be affected by HIV and METH use is sensorimotor gating, an automatic, pre-conscious filtering of sensory information that is thought to contribute to higher order cognitive processes. Sensorimotor gating is often measured using prepulse inhibition (PPI), a paradigm that can be conducted in both humans and animals, thereby enabling cross-species translational studies. While previous studies suggest HIV and METH may individually impair PPI, little research has been conducted on the effects of combined HIV and METH on PPI. The goal of this cross-species study was to determine the effects of METH on PPI in the inducible Tat (iTat) mouse model of HIV and in people with HIV. PPI was measured in the iTat mouse model before, during, and after chronic METH treatment and after Tat induction. Chronic METH treatment decreased PPI in male but not female mice. PPI normalized with cessation of METH. Inducing Tat expression decreased PPI in male but not in female mice. No interactions between chronic METH treatment and Tat expression were observed in mice. In humans, HIV was associated with decreased PPI in both men and women. Furthermore, PPI was lowest in people with HIV who also had a history of METH dependence. Overall, these results suggest HIV and METH may additively impair early information processing in humans, potentially affecting downstream cognitive function.

Used an apathy composite T-score approach validated in methamphetamine-dependence. Apathy, above other factors, associated with poorer drug abstinence self-efficacy. Methamphetamine use characteristics unrelated to drug abstinence self-efficacy. Social peer pressure was riskiest situation for potential methamphetamine relapse.
Background Confidence in one’s ability to achieve and maintain drug abstinence (i.e., abstinence self-efficacy) is a strong predictor of substance use treatment outcomes. Neurobehavioral factors that may interfere with abstinence self-efficacy are less well established, particularly in methamphetamine (METH). This study investigated whether apathy, which is highly prevalent during active METH use and periods of abstinence, influences abstinence self-efficacy among METH dependent individuals. Methods Sixty-six participants with lifetime METH dependence and METH abuse/METH dependence diagnoses within the last 18 months (mean age [SD] = 39.5 years [10.7]), and no severe psychiatric or neurological diseases, completed the Methamphetamine Self-Efficacy Scale (MSES), alongside a comprehensive neurobehavioral evaluation. The MSES presents six situations that may lead to relapse and collects self-report ratings for two subscales: “Confidence” (i.e., confidence in one’s ability to abstain from using METH, or METH abstinence self-efficacy) and “Temptation” (i.e., how tempted one is to use METH) with regard to each situation. Apathy was measured using a composite T-score comprised of items and scales from three well-validated, self-report assessments. Results Multivariable linear regression found that higher Apathy T-scores were significantly associated with lower Confidence ratings (i.e., poorer METH abstinence self-efficacy; p < .05), independent of potentially relevant factors (e.g., Temptation to use METH, comorbid HIV disease, and neurocognitive impairment). Conclusions Elevated apathy may adversely impact one’s confidence to abstain from METH use. Findings highlight the importance of addressing apathy in order to improve METH abstinence self-efficacy, which may subsequently increase the likelihood of successful METH treatment outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexualized drug use or "chemsex" in Taiwan commonly incorporates the use of methamphetamine. Our study aimed to assess the extent of severity of dependence of methamphetamine among MSM in Taiwan as well as motivations for engagement in chemsex. METHODS Direct messages were sent to users of a large MSM social networking application in Taiwan between November 2018 and January 2019. MSM who had at least one experience of using drugs during sex in the preceding 12 months were invited to complete an online survey that assessed their sexual behavior, substance use and motivations for engaging in chemsex. The Severity of Dependence Scale was used to assess methamphetamine dependency. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with methamphetamine dependency. RESULTS From a total of 1906 responses, 517 had used methamphetamine in their lifetime and were included in the analysis. The majority (87.2%) used more than one substance when engaging in chemsex in the past six months, while a quarter reported injection of methamphetamine within the last six months. The most commonly reported motivations for participants to engage in chemsex were to have fun, for relaxation, and to increase the intensity of the sexual experience. Nearly half (46.0%) exhibited signs of methamphetamine dependency. Lower monthly income, injection of methamphetamine, ever feeling lonely in the past 3 months and concerns about their substance use expressed by others were significantly associated with methamphetamine dependency. CONCLUSION A high proportion of MSM population who engaged in chemsex were at risk of developing methamphetamine dependency. While motivations for engaging in chemsex were diverse and suggest potential for enhanced sexual experience for some, community health organization for gay men's health and healthcare providers should be vigilant at identifying the risk of methamphetamine dependency and provide in-time, brief intervention or referrals when needed.

Abstract
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has transformed HIV into a chronic condition, lengthening and improving the lives of individuals living with this virus. Despite successful suppression of HIV replication, people living with HIV (PLWH) are susceptible to a growing number of comorbidities, including neuroHIV that results from infection of the central nervous system (CNS). Alterations in the dopaminergic system have long been associated with HIV infection of the CNS. Studies indicate that changes in dopamine concentrations not only alter neurotransmission, but also significantly impact the function of immune cells, contributing to neuroinflammation and neuronal dysfunction. Monocytes/macrophages, which are a major target for HIV in the CNS, are responsive to dopamine. Therefore, defining more precisely the mechanisms by which dopamine acts on these cells, and the changes in cellular function elicited by this neurotransmitter are necessary to develop therapeutic strategies to treat neuroHIV. This is especially important for vulnerable populations of PLWH with chemically altered dopamine concentrations, such as individuals with substance use disorder (SUD), or aging individuals using dopamine-altering medications. The specific neuropathologic and neurocognitive consequences of increased CNS dopamine remain unclear. This is due to the complex nature of HIV neuropathogenesis, and logistical and technical challenges that contribute to inconsistencies among cohort studies, animal models and in vitro studies, as well as lack of demographic data and access to human CNS samples and cells. This review summarizes current understanding of the impact of dopamine on HIV neuropathogenesis, and proposes new experimental approaches to examine the role of dopamine in CNS HIV infection. Both substance abuse disorders and the use of dopaminergic medications for age-related diseases are associated with changes in CNS dopamine concentrations and dopaminergic neurotransmission. These changes can lead to aberrant immune function, particularly in myeloid cells, which contributes to the neuroinflammation, neuropathology and dysfunctional neurotransmission observed in dopamine-rich regions in HIV+ individuals. These changes, which are seen despite the use antiretroviral therapy (ART), in turn lead to further dysregulation of the dopamine system. Thus, in individuals with elevated dopamine, the bi-directional interaction between aberrant dopaminergic neurotransmission and HIV infection creates a feedback loop contributing to HIV associated neurocognitive dysfunction and neuroHIV. However, the distinct contributions and interactions made by HIV infection, inflammatory mediators, ART, drugs of abuse, and age-related therapeutics are poorly understood. Defining more precisely the mechanisms by which these factors influence the development of neurological disease is critical to addressing the continued presence of neuroHIV in vulnerable populations, such as HIV-infected older adults or drug abusers. Due to the complexity of this system, understanding these effects will require a combination of novel experimental modalities in the context of ART. These will include more rigorous epidemiological studies, relevant animal models, and in vitro cellular and molecular mechanistic analysis.

Abstract
Performance based assessment instruments have been employed in functional capacity measurement of mental disorders. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the psychometric properties of the UCSD Performance-based Skill Assessment (UPSA). A search was conducted using the PRISMA protocol and 'UPSA' as key word term on electronic databases, with a date range for articles published from 2001-2017. Published studies involving community-dwelling adults were included. Pharmacological and/or clinical interventions involving clinical outcomes and/or institutionalized samples were excluded. Data related to construct validity, test-retest reliability and sensitivity/specificity were extracted, summarized and analyzed according to UPSA versions and psychiatric disorders. Fifty-eight studies including 8782 Community-dwelling adults met selection criteria. Data supporting the construct and known-groups validity were extracted from 41 studies involving Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders and 17 studies involving other metal illness. The UPSA was culturally adapted to 8 different languages and employed in 17 countries. Few studies reported sensitivity and specificity and the cut-off points could not be generalized. Moderate to strong evidence of construct validity and test-retest reliability was found. Few studies proposed cut-off points. The UPSA showed good psychometric properties in different versions including those culturally adapted.
