Abstract
The objectives of this study were to evaluate the ecophysiological state of the biota using a set of biomarkers in the upper-middle Luján River. To this aim, we collected adult Cnesterodon decemmaculatus fish, biofilm and water at three sampling sites in the upper-middle Luján River (S1: rural area, S2: Luján City and S3: urban area after passing Lujan City). For each site we determined physicochemical variables, heavy metal concentration in water, 19 biomarkers in fish (morphometric, histological, genotoxic, oxidative stress, metabolic and neurotoxic) and six biomarkers in biofilm (oxidative stress and extracellular enzyme). Additionally, we compared the responses of fish and biofilm with those of laboratory controls obtained from outdoor cultures. Our results indicated increased heavy metal concentration at all sites, mainly As and Cd, and decreased dissolved oxygen at S1 and S3. In fish, genotoxic biomarkers showed significant differences with respect to the control. The comet assay indicated damage in fish at the urbanized sites (S2 and S3) and an increased frequency of erythrocytes with nuclear aberrations at all sites. The CEA index (cellular energy allocation), calculated from the metabolic biomarkers and lipid concentration were significantly increased at S1. The gill damage evaluated histologically and with three indices indicated severe damage at all sites. Gills showed thickened primary and secondary lamellae and fusion of filaments at all sites, but a significant increase in mucous cells was only found at S1 and S3. Biofilm showed increased values of extracellular enzymes (β-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase, lipid peroxidation and oxidative stress enzymes (i.e., catalase) at S3. These results are novel in that they incorporated laboratory controls allowing for comparisons with fish and biofilm from the field. They provided information on the status of a fish population and biofilm community, indicating the negative effect of river water deterioration on the tested organisms. Moreover, results showed what biomarkers were most sensitive for each biological sample.

Abstract
The intensification of livestock farming can pose risks to the environment due to the increased use of veterinary products and the generation of waste in confined areas. The quality of water bodies near livestock establishments (Areco River (A) and Doblado stream (D), San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied by physicochemical parameters, metals, pesticides, emerging contaminants, and lethal and sublethal toxicity (neurotoxicity and oxidative stress) in larvae of the native amphibian Rhinella arenarum. Six sites were selected: upstream (S1A and S1D), at the level (S2A and S2D), and downstream (S3A and S3D) from the establishments. A low concentration of dissolved oxygen was observed in Doblado stream (< 2.34 mg/L). Cu, Mn, V, and Zn exceeded the limits for the protection of aquatic life at various sites. Between 24 and 34 pesticides were detected in all sites, with 2,4-D, atrazine, and metolachlor being the most recurrent. In water and sediment, the concentrations of ivermectin (S2A, 1.32 μg/L and 58.18 μg/kg; S2D, 0.8 μg/L and 85.22 μg/kg) and oxytetracycline (S2A, < 1 mg/L and < 1 mg/kg; S2D, 11.8 mg/L and 39 mg/kg) were higher at sites near the establishments. All sites caused between 30 and 38.3% of lethality and produced neurotoxicity and alterations in the reduced glutathione content. Moreover, larvae exposed to samples from all sites incorporated ivermectin. These results demonstrate the degradation of the studied sites in relation to the agricultural activities of the area, highlighting the need to take measures to protect and preserve aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract
Lethal and sublethal effects of imidacloprid (IMI) were assessed on Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Pisces: Poeciliidae) by acute exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the commercial formulation Punto 35® (Gleba S.A.) under laboratory conditions. Specimens were exposed for 96 h to 1, 10, 20, 25, 35, 75, 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg IMI L-1 from which an LC50 96 h value of 35.59 mg IMI L-1 was calculated. Moreover, sublethal concentrations 0.175, 0.35 and 1 mg IMI L-1 for 96 h were employed for the evaluation of the comet assay and the variation of activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione content (GSH). Result demonstrated an increased genetic damage index and activity of CAT was observed. Conversely, no significant variation was observed in GSH activity. Total protein content decreased in treated organisms. These results represent the first report of acute effects induced by IMI on C. decemmaculatus exposed under laboratory conditions.

Abstract
Industrial, agricultural, and urban areas can be sources of pollution and a cause of habitat fragmentation. The Conlara River located in the northeast of San Luis Province suffers different environmental pressures along its course from urban to agro-industrial areas. The present study aims to assess the water quality of the Conlara basin by evaluating how metals and pesticide contamination as well as physicochemical parameters relate to physiological stress in Jenynsia multidentata. Samplings were carried out in four sites characterized by a growing gradient of anthropic impact from the springs to the final sections of the river, starting with tourism passing through urban areas and ending with large agricultural areas (from S1 to S4) during both the dry and wet seasons. A total of 27 parameters were determined (11 physicochemical, 9 heavy metals, and 7 pesticides) in surface waters. Biomarkers (CAT, TBARS, ChE, and MN) showed significant physiological and cytological alterations in J. multidentata depending on the hydrology season. The combination of physicochemical parameters, metals, and pesticide levels allowed typification and differentiation of the sites. Some metal (Cr, Mn, Pb, and Zn) and pesticide (α-BHC, chlorpyrifos, permethrin and cypermethrin, and endosulfan α) levels recorded exceeded the recommended Argentinian legislation values. A principal component analysis (PCA) allowed detection of differences between both seasons and across sites. Furthermore, the differences in distances showed by PCA between the sites were due to differences in the presence of physicochemical parameters, metals, and pesticides correlated with several biomarkers' responses depending on type of environmental stressor. Water quality evaluation along the Conlara River shows deterioration and different types of environmental stressors, identifying zones, and specific sources of pollution. Furthermore, the biomarkers suggest that the native species could be sensitive to anthropogenic environmental pressures.

Abstract
The lower Salado River basin receive agricultural, industrial and domestic waste water. So, the aim was to evaluate the quality of three sampling sites that belong to the Salado River basin (S1: Cululú stream; S2: Salado River, at Esperanza City, S3: Salado River at Santo Tomé City) based on physicochemical parameters, metals and pesticides analyses and ecotoxicity on Rhinella arenarum larvae. R. arenarum larvae (Gosner Stage -GS- 25) were chronically exposed (504h) to complex matrixes of surface water and sediment samples of each site for the determination of the survival rate. Biomarkers of oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity were analyzed in R. arenarum larvae (GS. 25) after exposure (96h) to the complex matrix of water and sediment. The water quality index showed a marginal quality for all sites, influenced mainly by low dissolved oxygen, high total suspended solid, phosphate, nitrite, conductivity, Pb, Cr and Cu levels. Metal concentrations were higher in sediment than in water samples (˜34-35000 times). In total, thirty different pesticides were detected in all water and sediment samples, S1 presented the greatest variety (26). Glyphosate and AMPA were detected in sediments from all sites, being higher in S3. N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) and atrazine were detected in all water samples. Greatest mortality was observed in larvae exposed to samples from S1 from 288h (43.3%), reaching a maximum value of 50% at 408h. Oxidative stress and genotoxicity were observed in larvae exposed to S1 and S3 matrix samples. Neurotoxicity was observed in larvae exposed to all matrix samples. The integrated biomarker response index showed that larvae exposed to S1 and S3 were the most affected. According to the physicochemical data and the ecotoxicity assessment, this important river basin is significantly degraded and may represent a risk to aquatic biota, especially for R. arenarum larvae.

Abstract
Neotropical fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were exposed to different sublethal concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L) of sodium arsenite (As III) to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50; 96 h) and to evaluate the response of a set of biomarkers (genotoxic, behavioral, biochemical, and metabolic). At the end of the exposure (96 h), fish were video-recorded for behavior assessment. We used the micronucleus and nuclear abnormality tests and the comet assay in peripheral blood as genotoxicity biomarkers. In regard to biochemical and metabolic biomarkers, we dissected the brain for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity; the liver for glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activity and glutathione content (GSH); the gills for GSH content; and muscle for AChE, energy metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins, and the electron transport system activity of the mitochondrial chain. We calculated an index using metabolic biomarkers, to determine the cellular energy allocation. The LC50 value was 7.32 mg As/L. The As affected some swimming parameters in females. No significant differences in micronucleus were found compared with the control, whereas nuclear aberrations increased significantly at 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L. The genomic damage index and the percentage of cells with DNA damage (measured by the comet assay) showed a significant increase in the As-treated groups, and this technique was the most sensitive for detecting genotoxic damage. The As affected the antioxidant system (mainly GSH, CAT, and GST) and reduced the lipid content. A preliminary baseline was generated for the response of C. decemmaculatus exposed to sublethal concentrations of As, when it alters swimming behavior and the antioxidant system, has genotoxic effects, and reduces lipid content. Abstract
The mineralogical and geochemical characterization of sediments of the Reconquista River allows analyzing the geochemical partition of trace elements in one of the most polluted water courses of Argentina. The low dissolved oxygen and high ammonia contents, together with the high chemical oxygen demand, attest to the poor water quality. Ammonia, Cd and Cu content in surficial water exceeds the maximum guidelines for freshwater in Argentina. The recent sediments of the uppermost bed are enriched in organic matter (OM), sulfur, Zn, Cu and Pb. The enrichment factor is moderate, and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) for Cu and Pb indicates uncontaminated to moderately contaminated sediments. The positive and significant correlation between As, Cr, Pb and Zn with the iron content suggests that their retention is controlled by the amount of iron oxy (hydr)oxides in the sediments, probably combined with the silt + clay abundance. In comparison with its tributary, the Las Catonas Stream, the Reconquista River, has less OM and trace elements in the sediments and more dissolved trace elements in the interstitial water. We interpret that OM is the main sorbent of the trace element. In the absence of OM, the iron oxy (hydr)oxides and the silt + clay fraction are a less efficient substitute. Consequently, the interstitial waters of the Reconquista River are enriched in these elements. Therefore, minor changes in the environmental conditions may generate significant release of hazardous trace elements from the sediments to the interstitial water and, in turn, to the surficial water of the river. As most of the big cities and the agricultural activities of Argentina are developed on the loessic substrate, the understanding of its interaction with polluted waters is crucial.

Abstract
Water is impacted by a variety of increasing pressures, such as contaminants, including genotoxic pollutants. The proposed multi-biomarker approach at a sub-individual level gives a complementary indicator to the chemical and ecological parameters of the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000/60/EC). By integrating biomarkers of genotoxicity and erythrocyte necrosis in the sentinel fish species the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) through active biomonitoring of six stations of the Artois-Picardie watershed, north France, our work aimed to improve the already existing biomarker approach. Even if fish in all stations had high levels of DNA strand breaks, the multivariate analysis (PCA), followed by hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC), improved discrimination among stations by detecting an increase of nuclear DNA content variation (Etaing, St Rémy du Nord, Artres and Biache-St-Vaast) and erythrocyte necrosis (Etaing, St Rémy du Nord). The present work highlighted that the integration of these biomarkers of genotoxicity in a multi-biomarker approach is appropriate to expand physiological parameters which allow the targeting of new potential effects of contaminants.

Abstract
Traditionally, water quality was assessed by physicochemical parameters. However, a more comprehensive analysis is needed to study the effects of polluted water bodies on key species over time. So, the aim of this study was to monitor through physicochemical and ecotoxicological indicators the surface water quality of four study sites with different land uses from the lower Paraná river basin (Argentina) during spring and summer of two years: Morejón stream (S1), De la Cruz stream upstream (S2), downstream (S3) and Arrecifes river (S4). Physicochemical parameters were measured in situ and in laboratory, and a Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated. Chronic toxicity bioassays were performed with surface water samples using Rhinella arenarum embryos and larvae. Also, oxidative stress (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, reduced glutathione and lipid peroxidation), neurotoxicity (butyrylcholinesterase) and genotoxicity (micronuclei frequency) biomarkers were measured at acute exposure, and an Integrated Biomarkers Response (IBR) index was calculated. The water quality varied between excellent and bad in S1, good and bad in S2 and S3, and bad and marginal in S4. S1 presented the greatest variability of pesticides and S4 the highest number of metals exceeding the limits for the local protection of aquatic life. Mainly, S4 caused lethality in R. arenarum larvae, reaching a maximum mortality of 83.3% at 504 h of exposure. The lethal toxicity of S1 and S2 varied between periods. Water samples from all sites altered the oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity biomarkers, and the IBR was negatively correlated with the WQI. The IBR reflected the effects of the degraded water quality on the exposed organisms. So, the importance of evaluating both physicochemical and ecotoxicological parameters to analyze integrally the water quality of polluted areas is highlighted. A degradation of the studied water bodies and its negative impact to the native amphibian R. arenarum were observed.

Abstract
Acute toxicity assays in freshwater fishes are used in diverse local and regional regulations. Lethality is a complex biological process, depending on both extrinsic and intrinsic factors. The extrinsic parameters (pH, temperature, hardness and alkalinity, among others) have been widely studied and their influence on toxicity has been well characterized. In contrast, less attention has been given to intrinsic parameters (body size, sex, life habits) and their influence on toxicological sensitivity is poorly known. This work is focused on the effect of intrinsic parameters on lethality. For this purpose, we systematically reviewed experimental studies that reported data on acute lethality (LC50-96 h) of cadmium to freshwater fishes. We studied the allometric relationship between reported body weight and lethality, and the influence of the respiratory strategy and adaptation to extremely low-ionic strength environments on the sensitivity of fishes to cadmium. We observed a strong relationship between LC50-96 h and body weight. The fish group adapted to low-ionic strength water (OF) showed the highest sensitivity to cadmium, with the allometric constants being a = 0.0045 and b = -1.11, while the group of air-breathing fishes such as Channa marulius and Hepteroneustes fossillis exhibited the lowest sensitivity, with the allometric constants being a = 42.04 and b = -0.44.The effect of the intrinsic parameters can be easily combined with known toxicological models, thus contributing to the construction of models suitable for a wider range of species.

Abstract
In situ bioassays provide valuable information about the environment and offer more realistic results than usual laboratory experiments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of water bodies from the lower Paraná River basin, the second most important in South America, through analysis of physiochemical parameters, metals and pesticides and in situ exposure of Rhinella fernandezae larvae to assess oxidative stress biomarkers. The sites were: S1(Morejón stream, reference); S2, S3(De la Cruz stream upstream and downstream, respectively) and S4(Arrecifes River). In all sites, dissolved oxygen was low, atrazine was detected and Cu was higher than the limit for aquatic life protection. According to the water quality index, S2, S3 and S4 presented bad water quality, while S1 good water quality. Larvae were exposed in situ for 96h in order to analyze: lipid peroxidation(TBARS) as oxidative damage, antioxidant enzymatic (catalase-CAT-, superoxide dismutase-SOD- and glutathione s-transferase-GST-) and non-enzymatic defenses (reduced glutathione-GSH-). Larvae exposed in the most impacted sites (S2, S3 and S4) presented oxidative stress since the levels of TBARS were around 2 times higher than in S1. Also, the other oxidative stress biomarkers were altered in larvae exposed at S2, S3 and S4. These results highlight the importance of analyzing oxidative stress biomarkers during in situ exposures since they are useful tools for documenting the extent of exposure at sublethal levels. The complex pollution of the water bodies affected the exposed larvae, which may jeopardize the native populations.

Abstract
During embryogenesis, teleost females do not develop Müllerian ducts, which form the oviducts in all other vertebrates. Thus, when they reach sexual maturity they do not have oviducts. In viviparous teleosts, the lack of oviducts means that the development of the embryos occurs as an intraovarian gestation, unique among vertebrates. The ovary is an unpaired hollow organ whose cavity is continuous with the caudal portion, the gonoduct, characterized by the absence of germinal cells, which opens to the exterior at the gonopore. The gonoduct attains essential function as a barrier between the germinal region of the ovary and the exterior during all reproductive stages. This study describes the functional morphology of the gonoduct in the viviparous teleost Cnesterodon decemmaculatus during non-gestation (previtellogenesis and vitellogenesis) and gestation. The ovaries were processed using histological techniques and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, and periodic acid Schiff. The gonoduct has two regions: cephalic and caudal, and is formed by three histological layers, which are, from inside to the periphery: (a) tunica mucosa; (b) tunica muscularis; and (c) tunica serosa. In the cephalic region there are mucosal folds extending into the lumen and forming a structure similar to a cervix. The histology of the gonoduct indicates essential functions, that is, (a) the control of the luminal diameter in the limit to the germinal region of the ovary by the presence of a cervix; (b) during insemination the gonoduct receives the spermatozoa, may store and transport them to the germinal region; (c) the presence of melano-macrophage centers indicates support of immunological processes, especially during gestation when these centers increase in size; (d) production of exocrine secretions; and (e) it is the birth canal, internally lined by an ciliated epithelium and surrounded by smooth musclesboth tissues supposedly supporting the birth process.

Abstract
Cnesterodon decemmaculatus is a Neotropical teleost fish frequently used in ecotoxicological evaluations, whose biology has been thoroughly studied. Although there is considerable information on its response to different toxicants, no range of reference values has been so far established for the different biological parameters proposed as biomarkers of effect or exposure. Moreover, no study has yet examined the possible influence of the metabolic status of the exposed animals on their response to toxic stress. Therefore, the aim of this work was to provide a first baseline for a set of bioenergetic biomarkers in C. decemmaculatus adults exposed to a control medium under previously standardized conditions, and to assess their possible intrinsic seasonal variability. The responses of the biomarkers obtained from the controls were contrasted with those from the reference toxicant (Cadmio-Cd) and receiving waters (surface waters of the Reconquista River RR, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). We conducted four 12-day assays (one in each season) of exposure to control media, (reconstituted moderate hard water, MHW) and two assays of exposure to Cd in MHW and surface river water (RR) in both summer and autumn. The variables recorded were: Food intake (In), fecal production (F), specific assimilation (A) and cumulative mortality, oxygen extraction efficiency (OEE), specific metabolic rate (SMR), ammonia excretion (N), ammonia quotient (AQ) and scope for growth (SFG). The seasonal variation shown by some physiological parameters, points to the need for establishing a baseline obtained from standardized media, preferably on a seasonal basis. Moreover, SFG and A appeared as the most sensitive biomarkers, emphasizing the importance to consider the metabolic status of the test organisms for the appropriate interpretation of results from ecotoxicological studies performed under controlled experimental conditions. The obtained results provide useful information on C. decemmaculatus as model species in ecotoxicological bioassays involving biomarkers of early effect.

Abstract
Freshwater and marine water bodies receive chemical contaminants from industrial, agricultural, urban, and domestic wastes. Eco-genotoxicity assays are useful tools to assess the cumulative genotoxicity of these pollutants. Fish are suitable indicators for biomonitoring of mutagenic and carcinogenic pollution.In this review, we present a complete overview of the studies performed so far using the micronucleus test in peripheral erythrocytes of fish exposed to polluted water. We have listed all the species of fish used and the geographical distribution of the investigations. We have analyzed and discussed all technical aspects of using this test in fish, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the different experimental protocols. We have reported the results of all studies. This assay has become, for years, one of the simplest, fastest, and most cost-effective for assessing genotoxic risk in aquatic environments. However, there are still several factors influencing the variability of the results. Therefore, we have given indications and suggestions to achieve a standardization of experimental procedures and ensure uniformity of future investigations.

Abstract
Pesticide mixtures are frequent in freshwaters systems around the world, threatening the biota exposed to these conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the single and joint effect of two widely used pesticides in southern South America on a widely distributed fish species. In a 96-h assay, individuals of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were exposed to 0.84 nL/L and 8.4 nL/L of Clorfox and 0.2 mg/L and 2 mg/L of Roundup Max, commercial formulations of chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, respectively. Also, there were four mixture treatments with all the possible combinations of both pesticides. A multi-level approach was carried out to assess their effects covering the following relevant biomarkers: behavior (immobile time, line crossings and average speed), somatic conditions (Fulton condition factor and hepatosomatic index), serum parameters (cortisol levels, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and creatine phosphokinase activity (CPK)), brain and muscle acetylcholinesterase and cytological characteristics (micronuclei frequency and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes). Our results showed that Clorfox exposures affect behavioral parameters, serum cortisol, and nuclear characteristics of erythrocytes. Roundup Max affects only the cortisol levels whereas mixture treatments have an effect on behavioral parameters, cortisol levels, LDH and CPK activities, and nuclear characteristics of erythrocytes. Potentiation was the main interaction at the lowest concentrations of both pesticides whereas antagonism occurred at the highest concentrations of both pesticides. These results are highly significant since they arise from an integrated ecotoxicological assessment at several levels of biological organization but even more important is that the potentiated effects of the mixtures we registered are environmentally relevant concentrations.

Abstract
The Paraná River basin is one of the most important in South America and is affected by human activities that take place on its margins. In particular, the De la Cruz stream flows through an industrial pole and the Arrecifes River goes mainly through agricultural fields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the water quality of the De la Cruz stream (S1) and the Arrecifes River (S2) by means of physicochemical parameters, including metals and pesticides concentrations. Since amphibians are good indicators of environmental quality, bioassays with Rhinella arenarum were carried on. For lethal and sublethal parameters, embryos and larvae were exposed to a dilution gradient of water samples and AMPHITOX Solution (AS) as negative control for 504 h. For the determination of oxidative stress biomarkers (Catalase -CAT-, Glutathione S-Transferase -GST-, Reduced Glutathione -GSH-, and lipid peroxidation -TBARS-), embryos and larvae were exposed to undiluted water samples and AS. For the determination of micronuclei, larvae at hind limb bud stage (S.28) were exposed to undiluted water samples, simultaneously with negative and positive controls (AS and cyclophosphamide 40 mg/L, respectively). Dissolved oxygen was low in both sites and the copper levels exceeded the Argentine limit for the protection of aquatic life. In embryos exposure, water sample from S1 caused lethal effects (504h-LC50 = 49 (28-71.6)%), increased TBARS levels, and GST and CAT activities. In larvae exposure, water sample from this site decreased CAT activity, while the water sample from S2 caused important lethal effects (504h-LC50 = 98.72 (60.60-302.52)%), low GSH levels and increased GST activity. Water samples from both sites induced higher micronuclei frequency than the negative control. This study alerts about the degradation of water quality of the studied sites including lethal and sublethal effects in R. arenarum that can jeopardize the native populations of this species.

Abstract
Copper and nonylphenol are two commonly found chemicals in the aquatic environment, particularly in the distribution area of the amphibian Rhinella arenarum. The current work evaluated the lethal toxicity of equitoxic and non-equitoxic binary mixtures of copper and nonylphenol on embryos and larvae of the South America toad by means of the standardized test, AMPHITOX. Joint toxicity of mixtures was assessed in several proportions of these compounds at different exposure times and was analyzed at different level of mortality effect (LC10, LC50 and LC90). Considering the LC50, the equitoxic mixture was always antagonistic independently of the exposure time and the developmental stage. Joint toxicity showed mainly an antagonistic pattern; nonetheless, some time-dependent additive interactions were observed. Regarding the LC10, synergistic interactions were found in embryos and larvae exposed to two different mixture proportions at several exposure times. This highlights the possible synergism of these chemicals at environmentally relevant concentrations. These results point out the relevance of assessing joint toxicity of environmental pollutants for environmental risk assessment.

Abstract
Worldwide freshwater bodies that cross agricultural or urban areas are exposed to mixtures of xenobiotics. In particular, pesticides are usually part of these mixtures and could come into direct or indirect contact with biota and therefore, organisms have to cope with this altered scenario and the detrimental effects of these substances. Commercial formulations of chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, and their mixtures were evaluated using a set of biomarkers in the native fish C. decemmaculatus exposed to relevant environmentally pesticides concentrations. The biomarkers measured were: histopathological indices and tissue ultrastructure in liver and nuclear abnormalities and micronuclei in erythrocytes. During 42 days adult females were exposed to the following concentrations of Clorfox and Roundup Max (chlorpyrifos and glyphosate, respectively): 0.84 nl/l and 8.4 nl/l of Clorfox (CF), 0.2 and 2 mg/l of Roundup Max (RM) and all the combinations of these concentrations. Being the low concentrations of both pesticides environmentally relevant. Nuclear abnormalities of erythrocytes were registered under CF, RM and only one mixture. Histological inflammatory alterations increased in individuals exposed to CF and two mixtures. Finally, some pesticide combinations increased the circulatory alterations in liver. Ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes were registered at all the pesticide treatments. The different biomarker responses showed in the mixtures treatments reflected complex interactions, showing the mixture of the low concentrations of both pesticides (the environmentally relevant), potentiated effects. According to our results the presence of these substances in freshwaters could impose important risks for natural populations by causing deleterious effects on the native fish species C. decemmaculatus.

Abstract
Pesticides might increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Dicamba (DIC) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) are auxinic herbicides commonly applied in agroecosystems to control unwanted weeds. We analysed the oxidative damage exerted on the fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus by an acute exposure to DIC- and 2,4-D-based herbicides formulations Banvel® and DMA®, respectively. The Endo III- and Fpg-modified alkaline comet assay was employed for detecting DNA damage caused by oxidative stress, whereas enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers such as the activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and glutathione content (GSH) were used to assess antioxidant response to these two herbicides. At the DNA level, results demonstrate that both auxinic herbicides induce oxidative damage at purines level. An increase on CAT and GST activities were detected in 48 h- and 96 h-treated specimens with both auxinics. GSH content decreased in fish exposed to DIC during 48 h and to 2,4-D after 96 h of exposure. Additionally, a diminished AChE activity in specimens treated with DIC and 2,4-D was observed only after 96 h. Total protein content decreased in fish exposed to both auxinics during 96 h. These results represent the first evaluation of oxidative damage related to DIC and 2,4-D exposure on a fish species as the Neotropical freshwater teleost C. decemmaculatus.

Abstract
In the field of aquatic ecotoxicology, indexes obtained from a battery of biomarkers have proved to be a useful tool for assessing quantifiable and integrated health responses of organisms exposed to pollutants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of exposure to the Reconquista River water (RR) on adults of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus using different integrated indexes. We conducted a 12-d laboratory assay involving the exposure of fish to RR, a negative control (moderately hard water - MHW medium), and a positive control (for genotoxicity with MHW + Cyclophosphamide, CP). There were measured metabolic (food intake and specific assimilation, specific metabolic rate, oxygen extraction efficiency, ammonia excretion, and ammonia quotient), genotoxic (comet assay, micronucleus test, and nuclear abnormalities), morphological variables (total length, body and liver weight) and biochemical variables (Electron Transport System - ETS, Acetylcholinesterase activity - AChE, Catalase - CAT, Glutathione-S-transferase - GST, Glutathione content - GSH and tissue proteins). These variables were grouped into different indexes: morphological (Condition Factor - K and Liver Somatic Index-LSI), metabolic (Scope for Growth-SFG), genetic damage (GDI) and integrated biomarker response - IBR (AChE brain, CAT, GST and GSH liver, GSH gills, ETS muscle) indexes. Results indicated that RR water induced metabolic, biochemical and genetic damages. The SFG, GDI and IBR were suitable to assess the effects of exposure to an environmental sample in an integrated approach, reducing uncertainty due to inherent biomarker variability. These indexes have emerged as promising tools for environmental monitoring studies.

Histological, Genotoxic, and Biochemical Effects on Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Jenyns 1842) (Cyprinodontiformes, Poeciliidae): Early Response Bioassays to Assess the Impact of Receiving Waters. Abstract
In the present study, the toxicity of receiving waters from a highly polluted urban watercourse, the Reconquista River, Argentina, collected at a dam in the upstream part of the river was evaluated. Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, a widely distributed fish species in Pampasic rivers proposed for use in ecotoxicological evaluations, was used as a test organism. A 96-h acute toxicity bioassay with river water quality which has been characterized as moderately contaminated was performed. The treatment groups were (1) whole surface river water; (2) whole surface river water with 2 mg Cd/L added as a simulated metal contaminant pulse; (3) a negative control using reconstituted moderately hard water (MHW); (4) a metal positive control, MHW + 2 mg Cd/L; and (5) a positive genotoxicity control, MHW + 5 mg Cyclophosphamide/L (CP). The condition factor rate, micronuclei frequency, and comet assay from peripherical blood, structural changes of the gill arrangement by scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, histopathological changes in the liver and the glutathione-S-transferase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and protein content from the body midsection (viscera) were evaluated. According to our results, for short term exposure, SEM analyses of gills and liver histopathological analyses could be useful tools for the evaluation of target organ damage as well as comet assays for DNA damage. We propose that the 96-h laboratory bioassay protocol described is useful for monitoring the deterioration of water quality employing the teleost C. decemmaculatus and that the microscope analysis of gills and liver as well as the comet assay methodology could be sensitive endpoint indicators.

Abstract
The streams and rivers of the Upper Paraná River Basin have been seriously affected by impacts of high population density around the basin area. Fishes are widely used as models to assess the health of aquatic ecosystems, being considered as bioindicators of environmental pollution. In this context, our objective was to assess the potential genotoxic and mutagenic effects of the polluted water in three native fish species (Astyanax lacustris, Hypostomus ancistroides, and Rhamdia quelen) from Tarumã Microbasin, Upper Paraná River, Brazil. We also investigated the concentration of metals in water and in fish muscle to verify bioavailability and bioaccumulation of metals. For both less impacted sites (LI) and impacted sites (IMP) of the microbasin, the concentrations of metals were above the maximum limit allowed by Brazilian legislation (Resolution CONAMA 357/2005), except for Pb, total Cr, and Cu at LI sites and total Cr at IMP sites. A. lacustris showed a higher frequency of micronuclei (MN) at IMP sites compared with LI sites (p < 0.0001). We found no significant differences in MN frequency between site classes for H. ancistroides and R. quelen (p > 0.05). There were no significant differences between site classes regarding to nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes frequencies (p > 0.05). A. lacustris from IMP sites had higher concentrations of Pb, Cu, Fe, Zn, and Ni in muscle tissue (p < 0.05), whereas H. ancistroides from IMP sites had higher concentration of Cr, Cu, and Ni (p < 0.0001) and R. quelen showed higher concentration of Cd, Fe, and Ni at these sites (p < 0.0001). So, the chosen biomarkers are able to identify the environmental risk of the water pollution.

Abstract
The decline of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L., 1758) population throughout Europe has been partially attributed to pollution. As glass eel estuarine migration may represent a considerable threat, the impact of mercury (Hg) contamination at this stage was evaluated through an in situ experiment (7days). Total Hg (tHg) bioaccumulation was evaluated concomitantly with erythrocytic nuclear morphology alterations: erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities assay (ENA), frequency of immature erythrocytes (IE) and the erythrocytic maturity index (EMI). The ENA results suggested a genotoxic pressure at the most contaminated sites, in line with the tHg increase. The EMI data, together with IE frequency, showed that fish exposed to high levels of Hg exhibited alterations of haematological dynamics, translated into an erythropoiesis increment. Despite the presence of these compensatory mechanisms, the present findings suggest a harmful impact of Hg on genome integrity at this early development stage, potentially affecting eels' condition and ultimately the population sustainability.

Abstract
The Ilha River is one of the main tributaries of the Sinos River, southern Brazil, and it is located in an area characterized by low population density and presence of agricultural activities. Thus, this study aimed to assess the water quality of two sites of the Ilha River (source and mouth, S1 and S2 respectively) in five sampling periods using water physicochemical and microbiological analyses, biomarkers, such as condition factor, micronucleus test, gill histopathological analysis, and metal bioaccumulation in the native fish Bryconamericus iheringii. Mean values of BOD5, thermotolerant coliforms, aluminum, iron and lead exceeded the limits established by the Brazilian legislation for surface waters at both sampling sites. Significant higher micronucleus, nuclear abnormalities and mucous cells frequencies were found at S2 in, at least, one sampling period, whereas fish from S1 presented significant lower condition factor, higher frequencies of lamellar alterations and higher concentrations of chromium and nickel in muscle. Additionally, concentrations of cadmium, chromium and lead in fish muscle exceeded the limits considered safe for human consumption at both sites in at least one sampling period. Data from our study evidenced the mouth of the Ilha River suffers from point genotoxic effects, whereas the source is also contaminated by metals, despite being located in an area under minor anthropic activities.

Abstract
The increase of cultivated areas together with the intensive use of pesticides have greatly contributed to impair the quality of aquatic systems along different areas of South America. The main goal of the present study was to assess the effects of a commercial formulation of chlorpyrifos at environmentally relevant concentrations on two native fish species, Cheirodon interruptus and Cnesterodon decemmaculatus. Adult individuals were exposed during 48 h to the following concentrations: 0.084 nl/l (Ci-Cf 1) and 0.84 nl/l (Ci-CF 2) in C. interruptus (Ci) of Clorfox (CF), and 0.84 nl/l (Cd-CF 1) and 8.4 nl/l (Cd-CF 2) in C. decemmaculatus (Cd). Fish behavior was evaluated through locomotor activity and space usage variables. The activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in brain and muscle, catalase (CAT) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in brain, liver, muscle and gills, and aspartate amino-transferase (AST), alanine amino-transferase (ALT), AST/ALT ratio and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in liver, were measured. Both locomotor activity and space usage varied between the two species studied and between CF treatments. The enzyme activities showed significant variations in CAT for C. interruptus and in CAT, GST, AChE, AST, and AST/ALT for C. decemmaculatus under the exposure conditions. Given that both species responded to CF and the concentrations we tested are environmentally relevant, the presence of this pesticide in freshwater systems could impose a risk for populations of both native fish studied at field.

Abstract
This work is focused on the responses of some energy metabolism variables in Cnesterodon decemmaculatus adults exposed to cadmium under controlled laboratory conditions. This species has been used as bioindicator for evaluating the effects of different chemicals on diverse biological processes and is frequently used as test organism in ecotoxicity studies that include cadmium as reference toxicant. Animals were exposed for 12 days to the following concentrations: 0, 0.45, and 0.8 mg Cd/L. Food intake, fecal production, specific assimilation, condition factor, mortality percentage, oxygen consumption, oxygen extraction efficiency, specific metabolic rate, ammonia excretion, and ammonia quotient were measured. The overall balance was expressed as scope for growth (SFG). Cadmium-exposed groups showed a significant decrease in food assimilation and condition factor at the end of the exposure. There was an increase in specific metabolic rate and a decrease in SFG in the group exposed to 0.8 mg Cd/L. The condition factor and the SFG appeared as sensitive biomarkers of health status and growth of the animals, respectively. Cadmium-exposed fish reduced food intake, which was reflected in a decreased assimilation with concomitant decline in the external energy supply from feeding. Our results highlight the importance of considering the metabolic status of the test organisms when analyzing the responses of the biomarkers usually used as effect parameters in ecotoxicological evaluations under experimental conditions.
