Phenolic metabolism and related heavy metal tolerance mechanism in Kandelia Obovata under Cd and Zn stress

Accumulation ability of trace metals by silver birch leaves in areas contaminated by Zn-Pb ore processing: Effects of excessive trace metal accumulation on specialized metabolism

The study was carried out in the most industrialised region of southern Poland. Four areas were selected for the study: the vicinity of the Miasteczko Śląskie Zn-Pb-works (ZW; with three transects selected: A, B, and C), and the metalliferous waste heaps (H1, H2, H3). Samples were taken from the surface soil layer, while only mature silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) trees (3-4 m high) growing spontaneously in the study area were selected for the collection of leaves. The analysis of metals including trace metals (TMs; Ag, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Tl, and Zn) in the soil and leaves, as well as the contents of specialized leaf compounds belonging to polyphenols were performed. In general, the B. pendula trees in transects A and B located within 500 m of the furnaces exhibited 3-9 times higher content of TMs in their leaves compared to the plants located further away from the Zn smelter. In contrast, the quantity of TM in trees from transect C was independent of distance. The accumulation of TMs in the leaves was significantly lower in the metalliferous waste heap sites compared to the ZW area. It was hypothesised that the accumulation of TMs in B. pendula leaves would depend on the location and distance from the polluting source. It was demonstrated that TMs content in soil affects the accumulation of phenolic acids and flavonoids.

Cadmium phytoremediation potential of Houttuynia cordata: Insights from growth, uptake, and rhizosphere mechanisms

Cadmium (Cd) pollutes 7.0 % of China's land area. This study examined the potential of Houttuynia cordata for Cd phytoremediation because of its ability to accumulate Cd in its growth matrix. H. cordata were planted in plastic pots filled with paddy field soils having low (LCd), medium (MCd), and high (HCd) Cd levels of 0.19, 0.69, and 2.91 mg/kg, respectively. After six months of growth, harvested plant parts were evaluated for Cd uptake and tolerance mechanisms. Metabolomics and metagenomics approaches were employed to investigate the soil rhizosphere mechanism. Results showed that the average plant biomass increased as soil Cd increased. The biomass Cd contents surpassed the allowable Cd limits for food (≤ 0.2 mg/kg) and medicinal uses (≤ 0.3 mg/kg). Cd contents were higher in H. cordata roots (30.59-86.27 mg/kg) than in other plant parts (0.63-2.90 mg/kg), with significantly increasing values as Cd soil level increased. Phenolic acids, lipids, amino acids and derivatives, organic acids, and alkaloids comprised the majority (69 in MCd vs HCd and 73 % in LCd vs HCd) of the shared upregulated metabolites. In addition, 13 metabolites specific to H. cordata root exudates were significantly increased. The top two principal metabolic pathways were arginine and proline metabolism, and beta-alanine metabolism. H. cordata increased the abundance of Firmicutes and Glomeromycota across all three Cd levels, and also stimulated the growth of Patescibacteria, Rozellomycota, and Claroideoglomus in HCd. Accordingly, H. cordata demonstrated potential for remediation of Cd-contaminated soils, and safety measures for its production and food use must be highly considered.

Pervasive influence of heavy metals on metabolic pathways is potentially relieved by hesperidin to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Bassia scoparia

Hesperidin (HSP), a flavonoid, is a potent antioxidant, metal chelator, mediator of signaling pathways, and regulator of metal uptake in plants. The study examined the ameliorative effects of HSP (100 μM) on Bassia scoparia grown under excessive levels of heavy metals (zinc (500 mg kg-1), copper (400 mg kg-1), cadmium (100 mg kg-1), and chromium (100 mg kg-1)). The study clarifies the underlying mechanisms by which HSP lessens metabolic mayhem to enhance metal stress tolerance and phytoremediation efficiency of Bassia scoparia. Plants manifested diminished growth because of a drop in chlorophyll content and nutrient acquisition, along with exacerbated deterioration of cellular membranes reflected in elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lipid peroxidation, and relative membrane permeability. Besides the colossal production of cytotoxic methylglyoxal, the activity of lipoxygenase was also higher in plants under metal toxicity. Conversely, hesperidin suppressed the production of cytotoxic ROS and methylglyoxal. Hesperidin improved oxidative defense that protected membrane integrity. Hesperidin caused a more significant accumulation of osmolytes, non-protein thiols, and phytochelatins, thereby rendering metal ions non-toxic. Hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide endogenous levels were intricately maintained higher in plants treated with HSP. Hesperidin increased metal accumulation in Bassia scoparia and thereby had the potential to promote the reclamation of metal-contaminated soils.

Supplementation of Jasmonic acid Mitigates the Damaging Effects of Arsenic Stress on Growth, Photosynthesis and Nitrogen Metabolism in Rice

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the role of exogenously applied jasmonic acid (JA; 0.1 and 0.5 µM) in alleviating the toxic effects of arsenic (As; 5 and 10 µM) stress in rice. Plants treated with As showed considerable decline in growth attributes like height, fresh and dry weight of plant. Arsenic stress reduced the content of δ-amino livulenic acid (δ-ALA), glutamate 1-semialdehyde (GSA), total chlorophylls and carotenoids, with more reduction evident at higher (10 µM) As concentrations, however exogenously supplied JA alleviated the decline to considerable extent. Arsenic stress mediated decline in photosynthetic gas exchange parameters, Fv/Fm (PSII activity) and Rubisco activity was alleviated by the exogenous treatment of JA. Arsenic stress caused oxidative damage which was evident as increased lipid peroxidation, lipoxygenase activity and hydrogen peroxide concentrations however, JA treatment declined these parameters. Treatment of JA improved the activity of nitrate reductase and glutamate synthase under unstressed conditions and also alleviated the decline triggered by As stress. Activity of antioxidant enzymes assayed increased due to As stress, and the supplementation of JA caused further increase in their activities. Moreover, the content of proline, free amino acids and total phenols increased significantly due to JA application under stressed and unstressed conditions. Treatment of JA increased the content of nitrogen and potassium while as reduced As accumulation significantly.

Analysis of multiple biomarkers revealed the size matters of Cu particles for barley response under foliar exposure

The impact of particle size of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on plant response has marginally been investigated under the foliar application so far. Concerning the significance of particle diameter for their properties and interaction with plants, the effect of size should be considered in the analysis of the effect of micronutrient-based ENPs on plants. It is of particular importance for ENPs containing Cu due to plants needing a relatively low amount of this element, thus there is a risk of overdosing during application as a fertilizer or pesticide. Here, we examined the biochemical and transcriptional response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to Cu nanoparticles (nano-Cu) with different diameters (25 nm, 50 nm, 70 nm), microparticles (micro-Cu), and chelated Cu (EDTA-Cu). The plants suffering from Cu deficiency were foliar sprayed with Cu compounds at 1000 mg/L during the tillering stage. 1- and 7-day plants were analyzed in terms of biomass, Cu content, the activity of enzymes involved with antioxidant response, the content of low molecular weight compounds, and the expression of genes regulated metal homeostasis, aquaporins, and defense. The results showed that the Cu leaf level was differentiated over time and after 7 days it was higher under exposure to the smallest nano-Cu than other particulate Cu. Regardless of the duration of exposure, the Cu content was highest in plants treated with Cu-EDTA. The cluster analysis of all markers revealed a clear distinct response to the smallest nano-Cu and other particulate and ionic treatments. The bigger nano-Cu, depending on the markers, caused the medium effects between the nano-Cu 25 nm and micro-Cu and Cu-EDTA. The found size thresholds at the nanoscale will be useful for the fabrication of safe-by-design agrochemicals to provide crop security and attenuate environmental impact.

Overexpression of NtGPX8a Improved Cadmium Accumulation and Tolerance in Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative stress detrimentally affects hyperaccumulator growth, thereby diminishing the efficacy of phytoremediation technology aimed at Cd pollution abatement. In the domain of plant antioxidant mechanisms, the role of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in conferring Cd tolerance to tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) remained unclear. Our investigation employed genome-wide analysis to identify 14 NtGPX genes in tobacco, revealing their organization into seven subgroups characterized by analogous conserved domain patterns. Notably, qPCR analysis highlighted NtGPX8a as markedly responsive to Cd2+ stress. Subsequent exploration through yeast two-hybridization unveiled NtGPX8a's utilization of thioredoxins AtTrxZ and AtTrxm2 as electron donors, and without interaction with AtTrx5. Introduction of NtGPX8a into Escherichia coli significantly ameliorated Cd-induced adverse effects on bacterial growth. Transgenic tobacco overexpressing NtGPX8a demonstrated significantly augmented activities of GPX, SOD, POD, and CAT under Cd2+ stress compared to the wild type (WT). Conversely, these transgenic plants exhibited markedly reduced levels of MDA, H2O2, and proline. Intriguingly, the expression of NtGPX8a in both E. coli and transgenic tobacco led to increased Cd accumulation, confirming its dual role in enhancing Cd tolerance and accumulation. Consequently, NtGPX8a emerges as a promising candidate gene for engineering transgenic hyperaccumulators endowed with robust tolerance for Cd-contaminated phytoremediation.

Plant hormones and secondary metabolites under environmental stresses: Enlightening defense molecules

The climatic changes have great threats to sustainable agriculture and require efforts to ensure global food and nutritional security. In this regard, the plant strategic responses, including the induction of plant hormones/plant growth regulators (PGRs), play a substantial role in boosting plant immunity against environmental stress-induced adversities. In addition, secondary metabolites (SMs) have emerged as potential 'stress alleviators' that help plants to adapt against environmental stressors imposing detrimental impacts on plant health and survival. The introduction of SMs in plant biology has shed light on their beneficial effects in mitigating environmental crises. This review explores SMs-mediated plant defense responses and highlights the crosstalk between PGRs and SMs under diverse environmental stressors. In addition, genetic engineering approaches are discussed as a potential revenue to enhance plant hormone-mediated SM production in response to environmental cues. Thus, the present review aims to emphasize the significance of SMs implications with PGRs association and genetic approachability, which could aid in shaping the future strategies that favor agro-ecosystem compatibility under unpredictable environmental conditions.

Exogenous Brassinosteroid Enhances Zinc tolerance by activating the Phenylpropanoid Biosynthesis pathway in Citrullus lanatus L

Zinc (Zn) is an important element in plants, but over-accumulation of Zn is harmful. The phytohormone brassinosteroids (BRs) play a key role in regulating plant growth, development, and response to stress. However, the role of BRs in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) under Zn stress, one of the most important horticultural crops, remains largely unknown. In this study, we revealed that 24-epibrassinolide (EBR), a bioactive BR enhanced Zn tolerance in watermelon plants, which was related to the EBR-induced increase in the fresh weight, chlorophyll content, and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and decrease in the content of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), malondialdehyde (MDA), and Zn in watermelon leaves. Through RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq), 350 different expressed genes (DEG) were found to be involved in the response to Zn stress after EBR treatment, including 175 up-regulated DEGs and 175 down-regulated DEGs. The up-regulated DEGs were significantly enriched in 'phenylpropanoid biosynthesis' pathway (map00940) using KEGG enrichment analysis. The gene expression levels of PAL, 4CL, CCR, and CCoAOMT, key genes involved in phenylpropanoid pathway, were significantly induced after EBR treatment. In addition, compared with Zn stress alone, EBR treatment significantly promoted the activities of PAL, 4CL, and POD by 30.90%, 20.69%, and 47.28%, respectively, and increased the content of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and lignin by 23.02%, 40.37%, and 29.26%, respectively. The present research indicates that EBR plays an active role in strengthening Zn tolerance, thus providing new insights into the mechanism of BRs enhancing heavy metal tolerance.

Phenylpropanoid Derivatives and Their Role in Plants' Health and as antimicrobials

Phenylpropanoids belong to a wide group of compounds commonly secreted by plants and involved in different roles related with plant growth and development and the defense against plant pathogens. Some key intermediates from shikimate pathway are used to synthesize these compounds. In this way, by the phenylpropanoid pathway several building blocks are achieved to obtain flavonoids, isoflavonoids, coumarins, monolignols, phenylpropenes, phenolic acids, stilbenes and stilbenoids, and lignin, suberin and sporopollenin for plant-microbe interactions, structural support and mechanical strength, organ pigmentation, UV protection and acting against pathogens. Some reviews have revised phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and regulation of the biosynthetic pathways. In this review, the most important chemical structures about phenylpropanoid derivatives are summarized grouping them in different sections according to their structure. We have put special attention on their different roles in plants especially in plant health, growth and development and plant-environment interactions. Their interaction with microorganisms is discussed including their role as antimicrobials. We summarize all new findings about new developed structures and their involvement in plants health.

Effect of mixing oak leaf biomass with soil on cadmium toxicity and translocation in tomato genotypes

The environmental non-element cadmium (Cd) is toxic to all forms of life, and it also has a negative impact on plant development and growth. In order to ascertain the effects of cadmium on tomato growth and the function of oak leaf biomass in the reduction of toxicity and translocation of cadmium in different parts of tomato genotypes, two tolerant and two sensitive tomato genotypes were exposed to cadmium stress through the availability or unavailability of oak leaf biomass. The experiment involved two factors. The first factor was the various treatment levels, including soil without Cd treatment and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) oak leaf biomass pretreatment (COC-control), soil with Cd treatment and without NaOH oak leaf biomass pretreatment (CdC), and soil with Cd treatment and NaOH oak leaf biomass pretreatment (CdOBC). The second element consists of four tomato genotypes. Comparing to control conditions, all tomato genotypes spotted significant reductions in all morphological traits under Cd stress in the presence or absence of NaOH oak leaf pretreatment. Related to CdC conditions, root length, shoot length, root fresh weight per plant, shoot fresh weight per plant, root dry weight per plant, shoot dry weight per plant, and total fruit weight per plant were significantly improved by 4.25%, 9.75%, 23.24%, 10.10%, 28.10%, 9.08%, and 4.61%, respectively, under the availability of pretreatment of oak leaf biomass. The tolerant genotypes (Karazi and Sirin) exhibited the greatest increase in all traits evaluated, with the exception of root length, under the CdOBC condition compared to the CdC statement. Significant increases in leaf biochemical parameters were seen with the availability or absence of NaOH pretreatment of oak leaf biomass in the soil. The maximum values of proline content, soluble sugar content, antioxidant activity, and guaiacol peroxidase were stated in the presence of oak biomass under Cd conditions (CdOBC), with mean values of 1772.46 μg g -1, 687.18 μg g -1, 1025.74 μg g -1-, and 0.43 units min -1 g -1, respectively. The in vitro-tolerant genotypes exhibited the maximum values of all biochemical parameters. The concentration of cadmium in the studied tomato genotypes revealed that cadmium accumulated more in the roots than other parts. According to these outcomes, NaOH pretreatment of oak leaf biomass can be employed to diminish the hazard of cadmium absorption by edible parts.

Effect of exogenous taurine on growth, oxidative defense, and nickel (Ni) uptake in canola (Brassica napus L.) under Ni stress

Nickel (Ni) contamination and its associated hazardous effects on human health and plant growth are ironclad. However, the potential remedial effects of taurine (TAU) on Ni-induced stress in plants remain obscure. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine the effect of TAU seed priming (100 and 150 mg L‒1) as an alleviative strategy to circumvent the phytotoxic effects of Ni (150 mg kg‒1) on two canola cultivars (Ni-tolerant cv. Shiralee and Ni-sensitive cv. Dunkeld). Our results manifested an apparent decline in growth, biomass, photosynthetic pigments, leaf relative water content, DPPH free radical scavenging activity, total soluble proteins, nitrate reductase activity, and nutrient acquisition (N, P, K, Ca) under Ni toxicity. Further, Ni toxicity led to a substantial increase in oxidative stress reflected as higher levels of superoxide radicals (O2•‒) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) alongside increased relative membrane permeability, lipoxygenase (LOX) activity, and Ni accumulation in leaves and roots. However, TAU protected canola plants from Ni-induced oxidative damage through the amplification of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production that intensified the antioxidant system to avert O2•‒, H2O2, and malondialdehyde (MDA) production. Further, TAU-mediated increase in H2S levels maintained membrane integrity that might have improved ionomics and bettered plant growth under Ni toxicity.

From Nature to Lab: A Review of Secondary Metabolite Biosynthetic Pathways, Environmental Influences, and In Vitro Approaches

Secondary metabolites are gaining an increasing importance in various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, and food, as is the need for reliable and efficient methods of procuring these compounds. To develop sustainable and cost-effective approaches, a comprehensive understanding of the biosynthetic pathways and the factors influencing secondary metabolite production is essential. These compounds are a unique type of natural product which recognizes the oxidative damage caused by stresses, thereby activating the defence mechanism in plants. Various methods have been developed to enhance the production of secondary metabolites in plants. The elicitor-induced in vitro culture technique is considered an efficient tool for studying and improving the production of secondary metabolites in plants. In the present review, we have documented various biosynthetic pathways and the role of secondary metabolites under diverse environmental stresses. Furthermore, a practical strategy for obtaining consistent and abundant secondary metabolite production via various elicitation agents used in culturing techniques is also mentioned. By elucidating the intricate interplay of regulatory factors, this review paves the way for future advancements in sustainable and efficient production methods for high-value secondary metabolites.

RNA-Seq Analysis of Aboveground and Underground Parts of Biomass Sorghum Was Performed to Evaluate Its Suitability for Environmental Remediation

"Alto2" is a new biomass sorghum variety, which has the characteristics of fast growth, high growth, and strong cadmium (Cd) resistance, so it has the application prospect of soil remediation plants. In order to reveal the Cd resistance mechanism of this plant and pave the way for genetic breeding and cultivation of efficient remediation plants in the future, in this research, through the determination of Cd content in various tissues of sorghum under Cd stress and the physicochemical response combined with RNA-Seq analysis, the mechanism of Cd resistance of "Alto2" was initially revealed. The results show biomass sorghum "Alto2" was mainly connected with aboveground and underground parts through the MAPK signaling pathway and plant hormone signaling pathway, and transmit stress signal in response to Cd stress. Chelase and metal-binding proteins may be the functional genes mainly responsible for Cd enrichment and transport and regulated by stress signals. However, the expression of aboveground transporters was not significant. This may be because Cd in biomass sorghum is mainly concentrated in the underground part and is enriched by the chelation of secondary metabolites from plant roots by the cell wall leading to inhibition of aboveground transporter expression. The results of this study indicate that the biomass sorghum "Alto2" on Cd has high resistance, but the lack of the aboveground enrichment of transportability requires further research to improve the Cd transportability of this plant.

Plant Growth Regulators with a Balanced Supply of Nutrients Enhance the Phytoextraction Efficiency of Parthenium hysterophorus for Cadmium in Contaminated Soil

Heavy metal contamination in soil, such as cadmium (Cd), poses a serious threat to global food security and human health. It must be managed using environmentally friendly and cost-effective technologies. Plants with high resistance to Cd stress and high biomass production could be potential candidates for the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils to improve Cd phytoextraction. In this regard, the present study was carried out to determine the effect of gibberellic acid (GA₃), indole acetic acid (IAA), and fertilizers (N, P, and K) on Parthenium hysterophorus growth and biomass production as well as Cd phytoextraction capabilities. A pot experiment was conducted with various combinations of PGRs and fertilizers, with treatments arranged in five replicates using a completely randomized design. After harvesting, each plant was divided into various parts such as stems, roots, and leaves, and different growth, physiological, and biochemical parameters were recorded. Results showed that under Cd stress, growth, physiological, and biochemical parameters were all significantly decreased. With the combined application of plant growth regulators (GA₃ and IAA) and nutrients, Cd stress was alleviated and all parameters significantly improved. In comparison to the control treatment, the combined application of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA resulted in the highest fresh and dry biomass production of the root (12.31 and 5.11 g pot^-1), shoot (19. 69 and 6.99 g pot^-1), leaves (16.56 and 7.09 g pot^-1), and entire plant (48.56 and 19.19 g pot^-1). Similarly, the same treatment resulted in higher chlorophyll a and b and total chlorophyll contents under Cd stress, which were 2.19, 2.03, and 3.21 times higher than the control, which was Cd stress without any treatment. The combination of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA also resulted in the highest proline and phenolic contents. In the case of different enzyme activities, the combined application of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA under Cd stress led to a high increase in catalase (2.5 times), superoxide (3.5 times), and peroxidase (3.7 times) compared to the control. With the combined application of N+ P+ K + GA₃ + IAA, the maximum values of BCF (8.25), BAC (2.6), and RF (5.14%) were measured for phytoextraction potential. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that P. hysterophorus has a high potential to grow, produce the most biomass, and act as a Cd hyperaccumulator in Cd-contaminated soil.

Synergistic effects of calcium and melatonin on physiological and phytochemical attributes of Dracocephalum kotschyi genotypes under salinity stress

Since regulatory roles of calcium (Ca) and melatonin (MT) in physiological responses of plants to salinity stress are lacking, various Dracocephalum kotschyi genotypes (Bojnord, Urmia, Fereydunshahr, and Semirom) were pretreated with exogenous Ca (5 mM), MT (100 μM), and Ca + MT in the presence of salt (75 mM NaCl). In addition measuring the concentration of phenolic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), histochemical evaluations of essential oils and phenolic compounds in glandular trichomes of leaf samples were performed by light microscope. Salt stress reduced shoot fresh (SFW) and dry weight (SDW), leaf area (LA), relative water content (RWC), and maximum efficiency of photosystem II (F_v /F_m ), but enhanced total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoids content (TFC), phenolic compounds concentrations, DPPH radical scavenging capacity, electrolyte leakage (EL), proline and hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) concentrations, and Na⁺ /K⁺ and essential oils and TPC of the glandular trichomes of leaves in all D. kotschyi genotypes. Foliar spraying of Ca, MT, and particularly Ca + MT on D. kotschyi seedlings improved SFW, SDW, RWC, TPC, TFC, proline and phenolic compounds concentrations, F_v /F_m , and DPPH radical scavenging capacity, but reduced H₂ O₂ , EL, and Na⁺ /K⁺ in the leaves and essential oils and TPC in the glandular trichomes of all genotypes under both non-stress and salt stress conditions. These findings indicate that the crosstalk between MT and Ca synergistically improves salt tolerance, TPC and TFC, phenolic compounds concentration, and essential oils accumulation in glandular trichomes of different D. kotschyi genotypes.

Diversity and expression analysis of ZIP transporters and associated metabolites under zinc and iron stress in Capsicum

The members of ZRT, IRT-like protein (ZIP) family are involved in the uptake and transportation of several metal ions. Here, we report a comprehensive identification of ZIP transporter genes from Capsicum annuum, C. chinense, and C. baccatum, and their expression analysis under Zn and Fe stress. Changes in root morphology and differential accumulation of several metabolites from sugars, amino acids, carboxylic acids, and fatty acids in root and leaf tissues of plants in the absence of Zn and Fe were observed. Further, metabolites such as L-aspartic acid, 2-ketoglutaric acids, β-L-fucopyranose, quininic acid, chlorogenic acid, and aucubin were significantly upregulated in root and leaf tissues under Zn/Fe deprived conditions. qRT-PCR analysis of 17 CaZIPs in different tissues revealed tissue-specific expression of CaZIP1-2, CaZIP4-8, CaZIP13, and CaZIP16-17 under normal conditions. However, the absence of Zn and Fe significantly induced the expression of CaZIP4-5, CaZIP7-9, and CaZIP14 genes in root and leaf tissues. Additionally, in the absence of Fe, upregulation of CaZIP4-5 and CaZIP8 and increased uptake of mineral elements Cu, Zn, Mg, P, and S were observed in roots, suggesting their potential role in metal-ion uptake in Capsicum. The identified genes provide the basis for future studies of mineral uptake and their biofortification to increase the nutritional values in Capsicum.

Unraveling the mutualistic interaction between endophytic Curvularia lunata CSL1 and tomato to mitigate cadmium (Cd) toxicity via transcriptomic insights

In this study, endophytic fungus Curvularia lunata strain SL1 was used to explore its bioremediation potential and growth restoration of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) under cadmium (Cd) stress. Our findings demonstrate that SL1 establishes a symbiotic relationship with tomato plants, which modulates the antioxidant system, secondary metabolites, and gene expression in tomato plants exposed to Cd stress. Under Cd stress, tomato seedling growth was significantly reduced by up to 42.8 %, although this reduction was mitigated by up to 25 % after SL1 inoculation. Similar to this, SLI inoculation inhibits Cd absorption and translocation to the upper parts of the plant. Additionally, during Cd stress, phytohormones related to stress, including jasmonic acid (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene (ET), were elevated; however, SL1 inoculation lowered their level. RNA-Seq data revealed that the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was detected in the comparison between control and 1 mM Cd, followed by 2 mM Cd stress. These DEGs were mostly related to oxidoreductase activity, catalytic activity, plant hormones transduction, and photosynthesis. The findings also suggested that SL1 could improve tomato tolerance to Cd stress by modulating Ca²⁺ signaling, phytohormone biosynthesis, MAPK signaling pathway, and some transcription factors.

Mechanism of Zn alleviates Cd toxicity in mangrove plants (Kandelia obovata)

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is very common and serious in mangrove ecosystems in China. Zinc (Zn) has been used to reduce Cd accumulation in plants, and phenolic acid metabolism plays an important role in plant response to stress. In present study, in order to clarify whether Zn alleviates Cd toxicity in mangrove plants through phenolic acid metabolism, the Cd-contaminated Kandelia obovata plants were treated with different concentrations of (0, 80,300, and 400 mg·kg^-1) ZnSO₄ in a set of pot experiments and the biomass, the contents of Cd, Zn, soluble sugar, chlorophyll and the activities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), shikimic acid dehydrogenase (SKDH), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in the leaves were analyzed. The results showed that Cd contents in the leaves of Kandelia obovata ranged from 0.077 to 0.197 mg·kg^-1 under different treatments, and Zn contents ranged from 90.260 to 114.447 mg·kg^-1. Low-dose ZnSO₄ treatment (80 mg·kg^-1) performed significant positive effects on the biomass, phenolic acid metabolism-related enzyme activities, antioxidant capacity, and chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents in the leaves of Cd-contaminated mangrove plants. At the meantime, the addition of low-dose ZnSO₄ promoted the biosynthesis of hydroxycinnamic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, and enhanced the plant antioxidant capacity, thus alleviated Cd toxicity in mangrove plants.

Confronting Secondary Metabolites with Water Uptake and Transport in Plants under Abiotic Stress

Phenolic compounds and glucosinolates are secondary plant metabolites that play fundamental roles in plant resistance to abiotic stress. These compounds have been found to increase in stress situations related to plant adaptive capacity. This review assesses the functions of phenolic compounds and glucosinolates in plant interactions involving abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, high temperature, metals toxicity, and mineral deficiency or excess. Furthermore, their relation with water uptake and transport mediated through aquaporins is reviewed. In this way, the increases of phenolic compounds and glucosinolate synthesis have been related to primary responses to abiotic stress and induction of resistance. Thus, their metabolic pathways, root exudation, and external application are related to internal cell and tissue movement, with a lack of information in this latter aspect.

Diverse responses of halophyte and glycophyte Lepidium species to the salt-mediated amelioration of nickel toxicity and accumulation

Tolerance mechanisms employed by plants under environmental stresses can protect them against other co-occurring stresses. In this study, the effect of pre-exposure and simultaneous salt treatment on nickel (Ni) toxicity tolerance in one halophyte (L. sativum) and one glycophyte (L. latifolium) Lepidium species in hydroponics was investigated. In order to compare the species independent from their salt and Ni tolerance level, the glycophyte was subjected to lower salt and Ni concentrations and for a shorter period of time than the halophyte. Salt (NaCl) was applied at 50 and 100 mM concentrations and Ni was provided at an equal free Ni²⁺ activity by adding 100 and 200 µM Ni as single stresses, but 130 and 300 µM Ni for the treatment of its combination with salt in the glycophyte and halophyte, respectively. Temporal analyses of signaling molecules revealed that the halophyte is characteristically different from the glycophyte in that it exhibits a higher constitutive level of nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide, a longer duration of response to Ni, and its augmentation by salt. In addition to higher biomass and less Ni accumulation in salt-treated plants, the concentrations of free thiol groups, leaf pigments, proline, free and cell wall-bound phenolics contents, and the activity of phenolic metabolizing enzymes were higher in L. latifolium under the combined salt and Ni treatments than under the single Ni stress. In contrast, the biomass and most biochemical parameters of Ni-stressed L. sativum plants were not enhanced by salt treatment but rather decreased. Our findings shed light on cross-tolerance mechanisms in halophytes and uncovered halophyte survival strategies under multiple stresses.

Physiological and metabolic dynamism in mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal Oryza sativa (var. Varsha) subjected to Zn and Cd toxicity: a comparative study

Arable lands getting contaminated with heavy metals have a very high negative impact on crop plants. The establishment of the mycorrhizal association with crop plants is a sustainable strategy to overcome metal toxicity. The major aim of this study was to analyze mycorrhizae-mediated alterations on the physiology and metabolism of Oryza sativa, as well as the impact of these alterations in the metal tolerance potential of the host on exposure to cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) stresses. For this, 45 d old O. sativa (var. Varsha) plants inoculated with Claroideoglomus claroideum were exposed to 1.95 g Zn kg^-1 soil and 0.45 g Cd kg^-1 soil. Mycorrhization significantly increased shoot weight, root weight, moisture content, and chlorophyll biosynthesis under Cd and Zn stresses. Mycorrhization mitigated the oxidative stress elicited in O. sativa by the elevated Cd and Zn content, and it aided in maintaining the metabolite's level and rate of photosynthesis as compared to non-mycorrhizal plants. The circular-shaped unique structures seen as opening on the leaf surface of non-mycorrhizal plants under Zn stress, possibly for the emission of volatile compounds synthesized as a result of Zn stress, have a great chance of leaf tissue destruction. This structural modification was characterized in the case of Zn stress and not in Cd stress and can lead to the reduction of photosynthesis in O. sativa exposed to Zn stress. The reduction in oxidative stress could be correlated to the reduced uptake and transport of Cd and Zn ions in mycorrhizal plants. The exudation of tributyl acetyl citrate, 3-beta-acetoxystigmasta-4,6,22-triene, and linoleic acid from the mycorrhizal roots of rice plants has a crucial role in the stabilization of metal ions. This study proposes mycorrhization as a strategy to strengthen the Cd and Zn stress tolerance level of rice plants by regulating the physiology and metabolomics of the host plant.

Zinc biofortification through seed nutri-priming using alternative zinc sources and concentration levels in pea and sunflower microgreens

Micronutrient deficiencies caused by malnutrition and hidden hunger are a growing concern worldwide, exacerbated by climate change, COVID-19, and conflicts. A potentially sustainable way to mitigate such challenges is the production of nutrient-dense crops through agronomic biofortification techniques. Among several potential target crops, microgreens are considered suitable for mineral biofortification because of their short growth cycle, high content of nutrients, and low level of anti-nutritional factors. A study was conducted to evaluate the potential of zinc (Zn) biofortification of pea and sunflower microgreens via seed nutri-priming, examining the effect of different Zn sources (Zn sulfate, Zn-EDTA, and Zn oxide nanoparticles) and concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 ppm) on microgreen yield components; mineral content; phytochemical constituents such as total chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids, anthocyanin, and total phenolic compounds; antioxidant activity; and antinutrient factors like phytic acid. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized factorial block design with three replications. Seed soaked in a 200 ppm ZnSO₄ solution resulted in higher Zn accumulation in both peas (126.1%) and sunflower microgreens (229.8%). However, an antagonistic effect on the accumulation of other micronutrients (Fe, Mn, and Cu) was seen only in pea microgreens. Even at high concentrations, seed soaking in Zn-EDTA did not effectively accumulate Zn in both microgreens' species. ZnO increased the chlorophyll, total phenols, and antioxidant activities compared to Zn-EDTA. Seed soaking in ZnSO₄ and ZnO solutions at higher concentrations resulted in a lower phytic acid/Zn molar ratio, suggesting the higher bioaccessibility of the biofortified Zn in both pea and sunflower microgreens. These results suggest that seed nutrient priming is feasible for enriching pea and sunflower microgreens with Zn. The most effective Zn source was ZnSO₄, followed by ZnO. The optimal concentration of Zn fertilizer solution should be selected based on fertilizer source, target species, and desired Zn-enrichment level.

Evaluation of plant elicitation with methyl-jasmonate, salicylic acid and benzo (1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid-S-methyl ester for the sustainable management of the pine wilt disease

Treatment with plant elicitors can be a promising method to induce Pinus pinaster tolerance against the pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, by promoting plant antioxidant system, micronutrient accumulation and by modulating plant-associated bacterial populations. To test this hypothesis, plants were sprayed with methyl jasmonate (MeJA), salicylic acid (SA) or benzo (1,2,3)-thiadiazole-7-carbothioic acid-S-methyl ester (BTH), and evaluated until 35 days after-inoculation (dai) for: i) extent of foliar symptoms; ii) nematode density inside stem tissues; iii) proxies for oxidative damage and antioxidant activity, iv) micronutrient concentration and v) bacterial diversity. Compared with non-elicited plants, plant elicitation, particularly with BTH, significantly decreased nematodes density inside stem tissues (by 0.63-fold). Concordantly, without elicitation plant mortality reached 12.5% while no mortality was observed in elicited plants. BTH-elicited plants had significantly higher concentrations of anthocyanins and carotenoids at the end of the assay than SA-elicited and MeJA-elicited plants, which possibly contributed to the lower PWN colonization and degree of foliar symptoms observed. Accordingly, MeJA and SA led to increased lipid peroxidation at 28 dai (by 2.64- and 2.52-fold, respectively) in comparison with BTH (by 1.10-fold), corroborating its higher potential in increasing plant antioxidative response during infection. Moreover, carotenoids showed a negative correlation with nematode migration, whereas polyphenols showed a positive correlation. Elicitors also induced changes in the bacterial community of infected P. pinaster plants, increasing the diversity of specific populations. Finally, elicitors induced significant changes in micronutrients accumulation in plant tissues, namely a decrease in the concentration of B, Mn and Ni in plants treated with BTH compared to those treated with the other elicitors. Altogether, results suggest that elicitation with MeJA, SA and, particularly, BTH, increases tolerance against B. xylophilus by promoting plant antioxidant system, changing the accumulation of essential micronutrients and modulating plant-associated bacterial diversity.

Phenolic root exudates enhance Avicennia marina tolerance to cadmium under the mediation of functional bacteria in mangrove sediments

This study was carried out to demonstrate the mechanism of phenolic root exudates affecting microbial-mediated cadmium (Cd) speciation transformation thus enhancing the Avicennia marina tolerance to Cd. A rhizo-box experiment was conducted including eight treatments with four Cd levels (0, 1, 2, and 4 mg Cd kg^-1) and two phenol levels (0, 15 mg kg^-1). The results showed that the addition of phenols increased the pH, reduced the number of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the rhizosphere sediments, meanwhile promoted the transformation of Cd to low activity speciation. Furthermore, the sulfate accumulation and synthesis of flavonoid phenols in plants were also enhanced. The results indicated that phenolic root exudates inhibit functional bacteria-mediated Fe and S cycles and promote the immobilization of Cd in the sediments. In conclusion, the mitigation of Cd phytotoxicity induced by phenolic root exudates enhanced the Cd tolerance of A. marina.

Evaluating the Accumulation of Antioxidant and Macro- and Trace Elements in Vaccinium myrtillus L

This study was conducted in order to characterise the accumulation ability of Vaccinium myrtillus L for trace elements such as Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn and selected macroelements Ca, K, Mg, Na and P. The accumulation of nutrient elements and trace elements (ANE and ATE) and changes in the ecophysiological responses in bilberry in differently polluted areas were compared. The accumulation of the elements in the roots, stems and leaves of bilberry from four sites (in the nearest vicinity of a zinc smelter, a Mining and Metallurgical Plant, a main road with a high traffic volume and an unprotected natural forest community) were measured using optical emission spectrometry with excitation using inductively coupled argon plasma after wet acid digestion. The highest Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn concentrations were found in the V. myrtillus samples that were growing under the influence of the emissions from the zinc smelter. Moreover, the level of the total accumulated trace metals (ATE-17.09 mmolc kg-1) was also highest for the bilberry at this site. However, in the same area, the sum of the accumulated macronutrients (ANE-296.92 mmolc kg-1) was lower than at the other sampling sites. An EF > 2 was found for Cd, Pb, Zn and Mn, which suggests that bilberries may be enriched in these metals. According to the translocation factor, V. myrtillus was an accumulator of Cd, Zn and Mn. An analysis of the ecophysiological responses showed that the greatest concentration of ascorbic acid was found in the leaves of V. myrtillus at the most contaminated site (3.32 mg g-1 fresh weight). There were no significant differences in the total phenols between the contaminated and non-contaminated sites. However, the lowest value of the total phenolic content (490.77 mg g-1 dry weight) was recorded at the site where the highest Fe concentration was detected in the leaves. A significantly positive correlation between the Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations and a strong negative correlation between the Mn concentration and ascorbic acid content in the leaves of bilberry was also observed. The results provide evidence that the ANE method, which is used to interpret the chemical composition of bilberry has made determining the impact of toxic trace metals on the mineral composition of V. myrtillus significantly easier and also that a non-enzymatic antioxidant such as ascorbic acid can be a good biomarker for determining the oxidative stress that is caused by toxic trace metals.

Investigation of phenolic compounds potential to reduce dust pollution of pomegranate trees

The present study was carried out in two seasons from two areas at different distances from the industrial zone of Gabes city which is classified as a Mediterranean host-spot pollution region. Pomegranate tree were highly exposed to various industrial air pollutants containing Zn and Cu. The relation between Zn, Cu, morphological, physiological and biochemical changes induced in pomegranate leaves was evaluated based to the measurement of leaf heavy metals, leaf changes, total phenolic content and quali-quantification of individual phenol profile by LC-ESI-MS.Results showed that the highest levels of metals were found in the closet site to the industrial area. This accumulation varied significantly between areas and seasons and cause significant increase of necrosis leaf area, decrease of leaf area, green leaf area and specific leaf area. LC-ESI-MS analysis showed a spatial and seasonal variation of total phenolic acids and flavonoids which indicate that phenolic compounds are rigorously depending to stressful conditions. A significant positive correlation was found among total Zn, Cu, necrosis, cirsiliol, caffeic and trans-ferulic acids. This accumulation can serve as protective defensive mechanism to minimize the air pollutants effects, chelate Zn and Cu and then to improve the resistance of pomegranate trees.

Salinity mediated cross-tolerance of arsenic toxicity in the halophyte Salvadora persica L. through metabolomic dynamics and regulation of stomatal movement and photosynthesis

Arsenic (As) is a highly toxic metalloid adversely affecting the environment, human health, and crop productivity. The present study assessed the synergistic effects of salinity and As on photosynthetic attributes, stomatal regulations, and metabolomics responses of the xero-halophyte Salvadora persica to decipher the As-salinity cross-tolerance mechanisms and to identify the potential metabolites/metabolic pathways involved in cross-tolerance of As with salinity. Salinity and As stress-induced significant stomatal closure in S. persica suggests an adaptive response to decrease water loss through transpiration. NaCl supplementation improved the net photosynthetic rate (by +39%), stomatal conductance (by +190%), water use efficiency (by +55%), photochemical quenching (by +37%), and electron transfer rate (54%) under As stress as compared to solitary As treatment. Our results imply that both stomatal and non-stomatal factors account for a reduction in photosynthesis under high salinity and As stress conditions. A total of 64 metabolites were identified in S. persica under salinity and/or As stress, and up-regulation of various metabolites support early As-salinity stress tolerance in S. persica by improving antioxidative defense and ROS detoxification. The primary metabolites such as polyphenols (caffeic acid, catechin, gallic acid, coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid, and cinnamic acid), amino acids (glutamic acid, cysteine, glycine, lysine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine), citrate cycle intermediates (malic acid, oxalic acid, and α-ketoglutaric acid), and most of the phytohormones accumulated at higher levels under combined treatment of As + NaCl compared to solitary treatment of As. Moreover, exogenous salinity increased glutamate, glycine, and cysteine, which may induce higher synthesis of GSH-PCs in S. persica. The metabolic pathways that were significantly affected in response to salinity and/or As include inositol phosphate metabolism, citrate cycle, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and glutathione metabolism. Our findings indicate that inflections of various metabolites and metabolic pathways facilitate S. persica to withstand and grow optimally even under high salinity and As conditions. Moreover, the addition of salt enhanced the arsenic tolerance proficiency of this halophyte.

Plant Ploidy Level and the Presence of Cadmium in the Growing Environment Changes the Content of the Main Components of the Phenolic Complex in Buckwheat Sprouts

For the first time, the composition and the content of the main components of the phenolic complex of aboveground organs of buckwheat plants (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) with different levels of ploidy (2n and 4n) at the initial stages of ontogenesis and their changes under the action of cadmium (Cd, 65 µM) were studied by the method of high-performance liquid chromatography. In all variants, phenolic compounds (PCs) were represented by chlorogenic acid (phenylpropanoid), rutin (flavonol), as well as orientin, isoorientin, vitexin, and isovitexin (flavones). The amount of PCs in the cotyledon leaves in most cases exceeded that in the hypocotyls. Buckwheat seedlings of the tetraploid genotype are characterized by a higher accumulation of PCs as compared to the diploid genotype. Under the effect of Cd, the content of their individual representatives changed: in the hypocotyls of the diploid genotype, it decreased in most cases, whereas in the hypocotyls of the tetraploid genotype it increased. In the cotyledon leaves, the tendency was opposite. It was found that seedlings of two F. esculentum genotypes with different ploidy levels differed in the content of the main PCs and in their response to Cd, which is important for breeding this culture for stress resistance.

Comparative assessment of chromate bioremediation potential of Pantoea conspicua and Aspergillus niger

The recent work aims at the use of Pantoea conspicua (MT5) and Aspergillus niger (CRS3) to assess their bioremediation potential and growth restoration of Helianthus annuus L. under chromate (Cr⁺⁶) stress. The growth of the P. conspicua and A. niger was tested in Cr⁺⁶ supplemented media. The strains can withstand up to 1200 and 900 ppm respectively in the media and effectively bio-transform it to nontoxic form. Supplemented metal's levels significantly decreased the growth attribute of H. annuus (p< 0.05). On the other hand, P. conspicua and A. niger rescued the host plant by establishing higher colonization frequency with the host roots. Moreover, MT5 bio-transformed the toxic Cr⁺⁶ to non-toxic Cr⁺³ form in the rhizosphere. It also enhanced the host plant growth by producing phytohormones and ceasing Cr uptake and accumulation. Contrarily, CRS3 tends to accumulate and bio-transform metal in their hyphae. Nonetheless, both of the microbes tend to modulate phytohormones production and strengthening antioxidant system of the host. Improvement in the antioxidant system enabled the host plant to produce higher phenolics and flavonoids, and lower peroxidase. The associated plant species also exhibited higher ROS scavenging and lower ROS accumulation. Besides, the strains were able to produce higher amounts of phytohormones, including IAA, GA, and SA. Such activities rendered them as excellent phytostimulants, that can be used as biofertilizers in chromium polluted soils.

Study of the Effect of Selective Media with High Doses of Zinc on Regeneration Ability and Rutin Accumulation in Common Buckwheat In Vitro

Biotechnological methods are widely used in modern common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) studies, constitute an effective tool to create the best agronomic traits of the crop, and can also be used to breed forms, resistant to heavy metal ion toxicity, which is important in the environment of constantly growing anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems. The studied high concentrations of zinc salts (808–1313 mg L⁻¹) in the nutrient medium in vitro had an inhibitory effect on buckwheat, which was manifested by a decrease in values of its morphological indicators. Ion stress had an adverse effect on 7–9% of plants from their total number, indicating high plasticity and resistance of F. esculentum to highly toxic doses of zinc. The stress state of F. esculentum significantly increases the production of flavonoid compounds, including rutin, in plant cells, which is used in biotechnology to assess and obtain buckwheat forms of high flavonoid induction capacity. The processes of rutin biosynthesis were most intense in test-tube plants of the Izumrud × Inzerskaya hybrid obtained after exposure to high doses of zinc 1010–1212 mg L⁻¹. F. esculentum genotypes obtained using selective backgrounds with high zinc concentrations are promising biosystems for synthesis of rutin, valuable for pharmacology and medicine.

Application of multivariate analysis to assess stress by Cd, Pb and Al in basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) using caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total dry mass in response

Basil is an edible, aromatic plant, which makes the study of the ecotoxicity of metals in plant metabolism relevant. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of metals, aluminum, lead, and cadmium, in the synthesis of phenolic compounds and in the dry mass of basil plants (O. basilicum L.) grown in a hydroponic system. The plants were subjected to four different concentrations of cadmium (0.2, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 mmol L-1), lead and aluminum (0.04, 0.08, 0.12, and 0.16 mmol L-1), and compared with the control. After desiccation of the plant material, the total dry mass was obtained and then, hydroethanolic extracts (43% distilled water and 57% ethanol) were made for biochemical analyzes, which consisted of the determination of caffeic acid (CA) and rosmarinic acid (RA) by high performance liquid chromatography analysis with a diode detector (HPLC-DAD); total phenolics (TP) and total flavonoids (TF) by spectrophotometry. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and multivariate analysis (principal component analysis-PCA and hierarchical cluster analysis-HCA) was applied for data association. The phenolic compounds showed a high positive correlation with each other, and the total dry mass showed low and negative correlations with the analyzed variables. The results showed that the metals aluminum, lead, and cadmium promoted a stress condition in basil plants, which resulted in the reduction of the dry matter mass and an increase in the synthesis of phenolic compounds, according to the type and concentration of the metal.

Study of the Physiological Dynamics of Cadmium Accumulation in Two Varieties of Rice with Different Cadmium-Accumulating Properties

This study focused on cadmium (Cd) uptake by two rice varieties, Yuzhenxiang (YZX) and Xiangwanxian 12 (XWX), which differ in their capacity to accumulate Cd, i.e., XWX > YZX. Treatments with three different gradients of soil Cd concentrations showed that with the increase in soil Cd concentration gradient, the Cd content in each rice plant organ also increased, i.e., Cd-3 > Cd-2 > Cd-1. The trend in the Cd content of each organ was such that the farther the organ from the root, the lower its Cd content, i.e., root > stem and sheath > leaf > grain. We observed that for all four growth stages, the booting stage is the key stage in terms of Cd absorption, where the highest levels of accumulation are observed, that is, booting stage > full heading stage > tillering stage > maturity stage. Of the two cultivars, XWX had higher SOD, POD, and CAT activities but lower MDA content. In contaminated soils, SOD, POD, and CAT activities increased gradually with the increase in Cd concentration, while MDA content decreased, which indicated that the low Cd variety XWX had an advantage over the high Cd variety YZX. Through the comparative analysis of photosynthetic physiology, it was found that the low-Cd-accumulating rice variety XWX appeared more tolerant to Cd, while the high-Cd-accumulating rice YZX was more sensitive. Therefore, the low Cd rice variety XWX was more suitable for planting safe rice in Cd-polluted paddy fields.

Biochemical and Metabolic Plant Responses toward Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals Present in Atmospheric Pollution

Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic components of atmospheric particles. These pollutants induce a wide variety of responses in plants, leading to tolerance or toxicity. Their effects on plants depend on many different environmental conditions, not only the type and concentration of contaminant, temperature or soil pH, but also on the physiological or genetic status of the plant. The main detoxification process in plants is the accumulation of the contaminant in vacuoles or cell walls. PAHs are normally transformed by enzymatic plant machinery prior to conjugation and immobilization; heavy metals are frequently chelated by some molecules, with glutathione, phytochelatins and metallothioneins being the main players in heavy metal detoxification. Besides these detoxification mechanisms, the presence of contaminants leads to the production of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the dynamic of ROS production and detoxification renders different outcomes in different scenarios, from cellular death to the induction of stress resistances. ROS responses have been extensively studied; the complexity of the ROS response and the subsequent cascade of effects on phytohormones and metabolic changes, which depend on local concentrations in different organelles and on the lifetime of each ROS species, allow the plant to modulate its responses to different environmental clues. Basic knowledge of plant responses toward pollutants is key to improving phytoremediation technologies.

Wheat Leaf Antioxidative Status—Variety-Specific Mechanisms of Zinc Tolerance during Biofortification

In this study, we evaluated the leaf antioxidative responses of three wheat varieties (Srpanjka, Divana, and Simonida) treated with two different forms of zinc (Zn), Zn-sulfate and Zn-EDTA, in concentrations commonly used in agronomic biofortification. Zn concentration was significantly higher in the flag leaves of all three wheat varieties treated with Zn-EDTA compared to control and leaves treated with Zn-sulfate. Both forms of Zn increased malondialdehyde level and total phenolics content in varieties Srpanjka and Divana. Total glutathione content was not affected after the Zn treatment. Zn-sulfate increased the activities of glutathione reductase (GR) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD) in both Srpanjka and Divana, while glutathione S-transferase (GST) was only induced in var. Srpanjka. Chelate form of Zn increased the activities of GST and GPOD in both Simonida and Divana. Catalase activity was shown to be less sensitive to Zn treatment and was only induced in var. Srpanjka treated with Zn-EDTA where GPOD activity was not induced. Concentrations of Zn used for agronomic biofortification can induce oxidative stress in wheat leaves. The antioxidative status of wheat leaves could be a good indicator of Zn tolerance, whereas wheat genotype and chemical form of Zn are the most critical factors influencing Zn toxicity.

Transcriptomics of different tissues of blueberry and diversity analysis of rhizosphere fungi under cadmium stress

Blueberry (Vaccinium ssp.) is a perennial shrub belonging to the family Ericaceae, which is highly tolerant of acid soils and heavy metal pollution. In the present study, blueberry was subjected to cadmium (Cd) stress in simulated pot culture. The transcriptomics and rhizosphere fungal diversity of blueberry were analyzed, and the iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) content of blueberry tissues, soil and DGT was determined. A correlation analysis was also performed. A total of 84 374 annotated genes were identified in the root, stem, leaf and fruit tissue of blueberry, of which 3370 were DEGs, and in stem tissue, of which 2521 were DEGs. The annotation data showed that these DEGs were mainly concentrated in a series of metabolic pathways related to signal transduction, defense and the plant-pathogen response. Blueberry transferred excess Cd from the root to the stem for storage, and the highest levels of Cd were found in stem tissue, consistent with the results of transcriptome analysis, while the lowest Cd concentration occurred in the fruit, Cd also inhibited the absorption of other metal elements by blueberry. A series of genes related to Cd regulation were screened by analyzing the correlation between heavy metal content and transcriptome results. The roots of blueberry rely on mycorrhiza to absorb nutrients from the soil. The presence of Cd has a significant effect on the microbial community composition of the blueberry rhizosphere. The fungal family Coniochaetaceae, which is extremely extremelytolerant, has gradually become the dominant population. The results of this study increase our understanding of the plant regulation mechanism for heavy metals, and suggest potential methods of soil remediation using blueberry.

Microcosm Study on Allelopathic Effects of Leaf Litter Leachates and Purified Condensed Tannins from Kandelia obovata on Germination and Growth of Aegiceras corniculatum

Kandelia obovata (Ko) and Aegiceras corniculatum (Ac) are common and dominant plant species in mangrove wetlands in South China, which are distributed in similar tidal zones along the coastline. The present study aimed to determine the allelopathic effects of leaf litter leachates (LLLs) from Ko and their purified condensed tannins (PCTs) on the germination and growth of Ac by mangrove microcosms. Replicate pots containing five different levels of LLLs and PCTs were separately prepared and propagules of Ac were placed in each treatment. Both LLLs and PCTs significantly inhibited the germination and growth of Ac, especially at high concentrations. The final germination rates of the roots and stems and the numbers of fine roots declined continuously, while other growth indicators, including the lengths of fine roots and nutritive roots and the biomasses of roots, stems, and leaves first increased and then decreased with increasing levels. These results indicate that LLLs from the leaf litter of Ko, in particular their PCTs, exerted an inhibition effect on propagule germination and seedling growth of Ac, and the inhibitory effects were concentration dependent. This study suggested that condensed tannins from leaf litter, acting as allelochemicals, could regulate the natural regeneration of a mangrove forest.

Cadmium toxicity in Salvia sclarea L.: An integrative response of element uptake, oxidative stress markers, leaf structure and photosynthesis

The herbal plant Salvia sclarea L. (clary sage) is classified to cadmium (Cd) accumulators and considered as a potential plant for phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soil. However, the effect of Cd only treatment on the function of the photosynthetic apparatus of S. sclarea, as well as the mechanisms involved in Cd tolerance have not yet been studied in detail. This study was conducted to examine the integrative responses of S. sclarea plants exposed to a high Cd supply (100 µM) for 3 and 8 days by investigating element nutrient uptake, oxidative stress markers, pigment composition, photosynthetic performance and leaf structure. Measurements of the functional activities of photosystem I (PSI, by P700 photooxidation), photosystem II (PSII, by chlorophyll fluorescence parameters), the oxygen-evolving complex (oxygen evolution by Joliot- and Clark-type electrodes), as well as the leaf pigment and phenolic contents, were used to evaluate the protective mechanisms of the photosynthetic apparatus under Cd stress. Data suggested that the molecular mechanisms included in the photosynthetic tolerance to Cd toxicity involve strongly increased phenolic and anthocyanin contents, as well as an increased non-photochemical quenching and accelerated cyclic electron transport around PSI up to 61%, which protect the function of the photosynthetic apparatus under stress. Furthermore, the tolerance of S. sclarea to Cd stress is also associated with increased accumulation of Fe in leaves by 25%. All the above, clearly suggest that S. sclarea plants employ several different mechanisms to protect the function of the photosynthetic apparatus against Cd stress, which are discussed here.

Tolerance Mechanisms of the Aromatic and Medicinal Plant Salvia sclarea L. to Excess Zinc

In recent years, due to the development of industrial and agricultural production, heavy metal contamination has attracted increasing attention. Aromatic and medicinal plant Salvia sclarea L. (clary sage) is classified to zinc (Zn) accumulators and considered as a potential plant for the phytoremediation of heavy metal polluted soils. In this study, an adaptation of clary sage to 900 µM (excess) Zn exposure for eight days in a hydroponic culture was investigated. The tolerance mechanisms under excess Zn exposure were assessed by evaluating changes in the nutrient uptake, leaf pigment and phenolic content, photosynthetic activity and leaf structural characteristics. The uptake and the distribution of Zn, as well as some essential elements such as: Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn and Cu, were examined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The results revealed that Salvia sclarea is a Zn-accumulator plant that tolerates significantly high toxic levels of Zn in the leaves by increasing the leaf contents of Fe, Ca and Mn ions to protect the photosynthetic function and to stimulate the photosystem I (PSI) and photosystem II (PSII) activities. The exposure of clary sage to excess Zn significantly increased the synthesis of total phenolics and anthocyanins in the leaves; these play an important role in Zn detoxification and protection against oxidative stress. The lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage in leaves, used as clear indicators for heavy metal damage, were slightly increased. All these data highlight that Salvia sclarea is an economically interesting plant for the phytoextraction and/or phytostabilization of Zn-contaminated soils.

Comprehensive proteomic analysis of arsenic induced toxicity reveals the mechanism of multilevel coordination of efficient defense and energy metabolism in two Brassica napus cultivars

Arsenic (As) a non-essential element is of particular concern with respect to harmful effects on plant metabolism. While extensive studies have been conducted on the physiological responses of plants to increase As concentrations, however, molecular differences elucidating species-specific changes remain largely unknown. In the present experiment, two oilseed Brassica napus (B. napus) cultivars, ZS758 and ZD622, were treated by elevated As concentration. Their responses to the As stress have been investigated through pulse amplitude modulated fluorometer and isobaric tags based proteomic (iTRAQ) analysis. The chlorophyll fluorescence attributes showed that As stress significantly decrease the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI) as well as the comparatively closed stomata observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this study, 65 proteins displayed increased abundance and 52 down-regulated were found in the control vs As comparison in cultivar ZS758, while 44 up and 67 down-regulated proteins were found in the control vs As comparison in ZD622. Metabolic pathways, followed by ribosome and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites were the dominant functional annotation categories among the differentially expressed protein (DEPs). Many genes involved in primary metabolism, stress and defense were found to be As-responsive DEPs and/or DEPs between these two cultivars. Based on these results, a schematic description of key processes involved in As tolerance in ZS758 and ZD622 is proposed, which suggests that higher tolerance in ZS758 depends on a multilevel coordination of efficient defense and energy metabolism. Real-time quantitative PCR supported the expression patterns of several genes encoding a protein similar to their corresponding DEPs. In addition, these findings could shed light in unraveling the molecular mechanisms of B. napus exposed to As stress and provide or improve essential understandings in the development of advanced B. napus cultivars against As resistance.

Effect of Lead and Copper on Photosynthetic Apparatus in Citrus (Citrus aurantium L.) Plants. The Role of Antioxidants in Oxidative Damage as a Response to Heavy Metal Stress

Photosynthetic changes and antioxidant activity to oxidative stress were evaluated in sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) leaves subjected to lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and also Pb + Cu toxicity treatments, in order to elucidate the mechanisms involved in heavy metal tolerance. The simultaneous effect of Pb^- and Cu on growth, concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), chlorophylls, flavonoids, carotenoids, phenolics, chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic parameters were examined in leaves of Citrus aurantium L. plants. Exogenous application of Pb and Cu resulted in an increase in leaf H₂O₂ and lipid peroxidation (MDA). Toxicity symptoms of both Pb and Cu treated plants were stunted growth and decreased pigments concentration. Furthermore, photosynthetic activity of treated plants exhibited a significant decline. The inhibition of growth in Pb and Cu-treated plants was accompanied by oxidative stress, as indicated by the enhanced lipid peroxidation and the high H₂O₂ concentration. Furthermore, antioxidants in citrus plants after exposure to high Pb and Cu concentrations were significantly increased compared to control and low Pb and Cu treatments. In conclusion, this study indicates that Pb and Cu promote lipid peroxidation, disrupt membrane integrity, reduces growth and photosynthesis and inhibit mineral nutrition. Considering the potential for adverse human health effects associated with high concentrations of Pb and Cu contained in edible parts of citrus plants the study signals that it is important to conduct further research into the accessibility and uptake of the tested heavy metals in the soil and whether they pose risks to humans.

Enhanced Cytotoxicity of Cadmium by a Sulfated Polysaccharide from Abalone

Consumption of seafood is a common route of cadmium ion (Cd²⁺) exposure to consumers. The seafood matrices may alter the toxicity profile of Cd²⁺ due to the interaction between Cd²⁺ and biomacromolecules in seafood. In this study, enhanced cytotoxicity of Cd²⁺ was found in the presence of an abalone gonad sulfated polysaccharide (AGSP) and the mechanism was investigated at a metabolic level. The formation of the AGSP-Cd²⁺ complex was demonstrated by isothermal titration calorimetry. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) increased and mitochondrial membrane potential reduced upon exposure to the AGSP-Cd²⁺ complex as compared with those of Cd²⁺ exposure. The decreased cell viability after incubation with the AGSP-Cd²⁺ complex also suggested enhanced Cd²⁺ toxicity induced by AGSP. The metabolomics and lipidomics analysis revealed that, compared with the Cd²⁺ group, the AGSP-Cd²⁺ downregulated the phospholipid metabolism and resulted in more serious damage in the cellular membrane. The lipid metabolism disorder, in turn, amplified the generation of ROS, leading to a decrease in cell viability. These results provided new evidence of the enhanced Cd²⁺ toxicity upon interaction with seafood polysaccharides, and much attention should be paid to the effect of food ingredients on heavy metal ion toxicity.

Toxic effects of heavy metal Cd and Zn on chlorophyll, carotenoid metabolism and photosynthetic function in tobacco leaves revealed by physiological and proteomics analysis

To explore the mechanisms underlying the action of the heavy metals Cd and Zn on the photosynthetic function of plant leaves, the effects of 100 μmol L-1 Cd and 200 μmol L-1 Zn stress (the exposure concentrations of Cd and Zn in the culture medium were 2.24 mg kg-1 and 5.36 mg kg-1) on the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents as well as the photosynthetic function of tobacco leaves (Long Jiang 911) were studied. The key proteins in these physiological processes were quantitatively analyzed using a TMT-based proteomics approach. Cd stress was found to inhibit the expression of key enzymes during chlorophyll synthesis in leaves, resulting in a decrease of the Chl content. However, Zn stress did not significantly influence the chlorophyll content. Leaves adapted to Zn stress by upregulating CAO expression and increase the Chl b content. Although the Car content in leaves did not significantly change under either Cd or Zn stress, the expressions of ZE and VDE during Car metabolism decreased significantly under Cd stress. This was accompanied by damages to the xanthophyll cycle and the NPQ-dependent energy dissipation mechanism. In contrast, under Zn stress, leaves adapted to Zn stress by increasing the expression of VDE, thus improving NPQ. Under Cd stress, the expressions of three sets of proteins were significantly down-regulated, including PSII donor-side proteins (PPD3, PPD6, OEE1, OEE2-1, OEE2-2, OEE2-3, and OEE3-2), receptor-side proteins (D1, D2, CP43, CP47, Cyt b559α, Cyt b559β, PsbL, PsbQ, PsbR, Psb27-H1, and Psb28), and core proteins of the PSI reaction center (psaA, psaB, psaC, psaD, psaE-A, PsaE-B, psaF, psaG, psaH-1, psaK, psaL, psaN, and psaOL). In comparison, only eight of the above proteins (PPD6, OEE3-2, PsbL, PsbQ, Psb27-H1, psaL, and psaOL) were significantly down-regulated by Zn stress. Under Cd stress, both the donor side and the receptor side of PSII were damaged, and PSII and PSI experienced severe photoinhibition. However, Zn stress did not decrease either PSII or PSI activities in tobacco leaves. In addition, the expression of electron transport-related proteins (cytb6/f complex, PC, Fd, and FNR), ATPase subunits, Rubisco subunits, and RCA decreased significantly in leaves under Cd stress. However, no significant changes were observed in any of these proteins under Zn stress. Although Cd stress was found to up-regulate the expressions of PGRL1A and PGRL1B and induce an increase of PGR5/PGRL1-CEF in tobacco leaves, NDH-CEF was significantly inhibited. Under Zn stress, the expressions of ndhH and PGRL1A in leaves were significantly up-regulated, but there were no significant changes in either NDH-CEF or PGR5/PGRL-CEF. Under Cd stress, the expressions of proteins related to Fd-dependent nitrogen metabolism and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging processes (e.g., FTR, Fd-NiR, and Fd-GOGAT) were significantly down-regulated in leaves. However, no significant changes of any of the above proteins were identified under Zn stress. In summary, Cd stress could inhibit the synthesis of chlorophyll in tobacco leaves, significantly down-regulate the expressions of photosynthesis-related proteins or subunits, and suppress both the xanthophyll cycle and NDH-CEF process. The expressions of proteins related to the Fd-dependent nitrogen metabolism and ROS scavenging were also significantly down-regulated, which blocked the photosynthetic electron transport, thus resulting in severe photoinhibition of both PSII and PSI. However, Zn stress had little effect on the photosynthetic function of tobacco leaves.

Responses of glutathione and phytochelatins biosysthesis in a cadmium accumulator of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. under cadmium contaminated conditions

Screening new accumulators of heavy metal and identifying their tolerance, enrichment capacity of heavy metals are currently hot issues in phytoremediation research. A series of hydroponic experiments were conducted to analyze the effects of glutathione and phytochelatins in roots, stems, and leaves of Perilla frutescens under cadmium stress. The results showed that the non-protein thiols in roots and stems mainly existed in the form of GSH, PC₂, PC₃, and PC₄ under Cd stress condition, while in leaves they existed in the form of GSH, PC₂, and PC₃. Furthermore, the contents of GSH and PCs positively correlated with Cd, but negatively correlated with root vigor and chlorophyll content under Cd stress conditions. After 21 days of treatments, the contents of Cd in different parts of the plant were 1465.2-3092.9 mg· kg^-1 in the roots, 199.6-478.4 mg·kg^-1 in the stems and 61.3-96.9 mg· kg^-1 in the leaves at 2, 5, 10 mg·L^-1 Cd levels respectively, and the amount of Cd uptakes were up to 3547.7-5701.7 μg·plant^-1. Therefore, P. frutescens performed high capacity in Cd accumulation, and PCs played a key role in Cd tolerance. The application prospect of the plant in phytoremediation Cd polluted soil was also discussed.

Distinct co-tolerance responses to combined salinity and cadmium exposure in metallicolous and non-metallicolous ecotypes of Silene vulgaris

This study compared co-tolerance to salinity and cadmium and investigated its mechanisms in a facultative metallophyte Silene vulgaris originating from distinct habitats. Shoots of calamine (Cal) and non-metallicolous (N-Cal) ecotypes grown in vitro were exposed to 10 and 100 mM NaCl, 5 μM CdCl₂ and their combinations. Stress effects were evaluated based on growth, oxidative stress parameters, and DNA content and damage. Tolerance mechanisms were assessed by analyzing non-enzymatic antioxidants, osmolytes and ion accumulation. Irrespective of the ecotype, Cd stimulated shoot proliferation (micropropagation coefficients MC = 15.2 and 12.1 for Cal and N-Cal, respectively, growth tolerance index GTI = 148.1 and 156.7%). In Cal ecotype this was attributed to an increase in glutathione content and reorganization of cell membrane structures under Cd exposure, whereas in N-Cal to enhanced synthesis of other non-enzymatic antioxidants, mainly carotenoids and ascorbate. Low salinity stimulated growth of Cal ecotype due to optimizing Cl^- content. High salinity inhibited growth, especially in Cal ecotype, where it enhanced DNA damage and disturbed ionic homeostasis. Species-specific reaction to combined salinity and Cd involved a mutual inhibition of Na⁺, Cl^- and Cd²⁺ uptake. N-Cal ecotype responded to combined stresses by enhancing its antioxidant defense, presumably induced by Cd, whereas the metallicolous ecotype triggered osmotic adjustment. The study revealed that in S. vulgaris Cd application ameliorated metabolic responses to simultaneous salinity exposure. It also shed a light on distinct strategies of coping with combined abiotic stresses in two ecotypes of the species showing high plasticity in environmental conditions.

Zn(II) Complex of Plant Phenolic Chlorogenic Acid: Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Structural Studies

The structure of the Zn(II) complex of 5-caffeoylquinic acid (chlorogenic acid, 5-CQA) and the type of interaction between the Zn(II) cation and the ligand were studied by means of various experimental and theoretical methods, i.e., electronic absorption spectroscopy UV/Vis, infrared spectroscopy FT-IR, elemental, thermogravimetric and density functional theory (DFT) calculations at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant power) and trolox oxidation assays were applied in study of the anti-/pro-oxidant properties of Zn(II) 5-CQA and 5-CQA. The antimicrobial activity of these compounds against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enteritidis and Candida albicans was tested. An effect of Zn(II) chelation by chlorogenic acid on the anti-/pro-oxidant and antimicrobial activities of the ligand was discussed. Moreover, the mechanism of the antioxidant properties of Zn(II) 5-CQA and 5-CQA were studied on the basis of the theoretical energy descriptors and thermochemical parameters. Zn(II) chlorogenate showed better antioxidant activity than chlorogenic acid and commonly applied natural (L-ascorbic acid) and synthetic antioxidants (butylated hydroxyanisol (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)). The pro-oxidant activity of Zn(II) 5-CQA was higher than the ligand and increased with the rise of the compound concentration The type of Zn(II) coordination by the chlorogenate ligand strongly affected the antioxidant activity of the complex.

Profile and concentration of the low molecular weight organic acids and phenolic compounds created by two-year-old Acer platanoides seedlings growing under different As forms

Two-year-old seedlings of Acer platanoides were cultivated during a three-month hydroponic experiment in modified Knop solution enriched with inorganic (As(III), As(V)) and organic (dimethylarsinic acid - DMA) arsenic forms at 0.06 mM, 0.6 mM and their combinations. The profile and content of low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) and phenolic compounds were also determined in the rhizosphere, roots and leaves. Arsenic (As) treatment caused an elevated creation of the above mentioned metabolites, which was higher in leaves than in the rhizosphere or roots, and their overall content was correlated with the concentration of As in A. platanoides organs. The addition of all As forms strongly induced the exudation of citric and oxalic acids into the rhizosphere, while malonic, acetic, citric and malic acids were formed in the roots. The most differential profile of roots was confirmed for As(V) 0.06 mM (4-hydroxybenzoic (4-HBA), syringic, 2,5 dihydroxybenzoic (2,5-DHBA), caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic, p-coumaric and sinapic acids and catechin). The obtained results indicate that the presence of particular As forms has a significant impact on the content and profile of exuded and created LMWOAs and phenolic compounds, and can also have a decisive influence on the activation of appropriate detoxification mechanisms.

Sex-specific responses of Populus deltoides to interaction of cadmium and salinity in root systems

More research about branch order-specific accumulation of toxic ions in root systems is needed to know root branch-related responses in growth and physiology. In this study, we used Populus deltoides females and males as a model to detect sex-specific differences in physiology, biochemistry, ultrastructure of absorbing roots and distribution of toxic ions in heterogeneous root systems under Cd, salinity and combined stress. Healthy annual male and female plants of P. deltoides were cultivated in soils including 5 mg kg^-1 of Cd, 0.2% (w/w) of NaCl and their combination for a growth season. Our results are mainly as follows: (1) females suffered more growth inhibition, root biomass decline, root viability depression, and damage to distal root cells, but lower ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) than the males under all stresses; (2) In both sexes, salinity adopted in the present study caused more significant negative effects on growth and organelles integrity than Cd stress, while interaction treatment did not induced a further depression in growth or more impairments in root cells of both sexes in comparison to salinity, indicating influence of combined stress was not equal simply to a superposition of the effects caused by single factors; (3) Cd and Na accumulation in root systems is highly heterogeneous and branch order-specific, with lower-order roots containing more Cd²⁺ but less Na⁺, and higher-order roots accumulating more Na⁺ but less Cd²⁺. Besides, it is noteworthy that females accumulated more Cd²⁺ in 1-2 order roots and more Na⁺ in 1-3 order roots than males under the interaction treatment. These results indicated that strategies in toxic ions accumulation in heterogeneous root systems of P. deltoides was highly branch order-specific, and may closely correlate with sex-specific root growth and physiological responses to the interaction of Cd and salinity.
