Advances in microalgae-based carbon sequestration: Current status and future perspectives

The advancement in carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration technology has received significant attention due to the adverse effects of CO2 on climate. The mitigation of the adverse effects of CO2 can be accomplished through its conversion into useful products or renewable fuels. In this regard, microalgae is a promising candidate due to its high photosynthesis efficiency, sustainability, and eco-friendly nature. Microalgae utilizes CO2 in the process of photosynthesis and generates biomass that can be utilized to produce various valuable products such as supplements, chemicals, cosmetics, biofuels, and other value-added products. However, at present microalgae cultivation is still restricted to producing value-added products due to high cultivation costs and lower CO2 sequestration efficiency of algal strains. Therefore, it is very crucial to develop novel techniques that can be cost-effective and enhance microalgal carbon sequestration efficiency. The main aim of the present manuscript is to explain how to optimize microalgal CO2 sequestration, integrate valuable product generation, and explore novel techniques like genetic manipulations, phytohormones, quantum dots, and AI tools to enhance the efficiency of CO2 sequestration. Additionally, this review provides an overview of the mass flow of different microalgae and their biorefinery, life cycle assessment (LCA) for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions, and the advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of current technologies. All of the reviewed approaches efficiently enhance microalgal CO2 sequestration and integrate value-added compound production, creating a green and economically profitable process.

Slightly acidic electrolyzed water significantly restrains the accumulation of the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in hydroponic systems

AIMS

This study explored the effects of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) on algae to exploit technologies that effectively suppress algal growth in hydroponic systems and improve crop yield.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The effects of SAEW on algal growth and the response mechanisms of algae to SAEW were investigated. Moreover, we studied whether the application of SAEW adversely affected tomato seedling growth. The results showed that SAEW significantly inhibited algal growth and destroyed the integrity of the algal cells. In addition, the intracellular oxidation-reduction system of algae was greatly influenced by SAEW. The H2O2, O2-, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) fluorescence signals were significantly induced by SAEW, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were greatly enhanced by a low SAEW concentration but significantly inhibited by SAEW with a high available chlorine concentration, which may contribute to heavy oxidative stress on algal growth and cell structure break down, eventually causing the death of algae and cell number decrease. We also found that regardless of the concentration of SAEW (from 10 to 40 mg L-1), there was no significant change in the germination index, length, or fresh weight of the hydroponic tomato seedlings.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings demonstrate that SAEW can be used in hydroponic systems to restrain algae with no negative impact on tomato plants.

An update on the biological effects of quantum dots: From environmental fate to risk assessment based on multiple biological models

Quantum dots (QDs) are zero-dimension nanomaterials with excellent physical and chemical properties, which have been widely used in environmental science and biomedicine. Therefore, QDs are potential to cause toxicity to the environment and enter organisms through migration and bioenrichment effects. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis on the adverse effects of QDs in different organisms based on recently available data. Following PRISMA guidelines, this study searched PubMed database according to the pre-set keywords, and included 206 studies according to the inclusion and elimination criteria. CiteSpace software was firstly used to analyze the keywords of included literatures, search for breaking points of former studies, and summarize the classification, characterization and dosage of QDs. The environment fate of QDs in the ecosystems were then analyzed, followed with comprehensively summarized toxicity outcomes at individual, system, cell, subcellular and molecular levels. After migration and degradation in the environment, aquatic plants, bacteria, fungi as well as invertebrates and vertebrates have been found to be suffered from toxic effects caused by QDs. Aside from systemic effects, toxicity of intrinsic QDs targeting to specific organs, including respiratory system, cardiovascular system, hepatorenal system, nervous system and immune system were confirmed in multiple animal models. Moreover, QDs could be taken up by cells and disturb the organelles, which resulted in cellular inflammation and cell death, including autophagy, apoptosis, necrosis, pyroptosis and ferroptosis. Recently, several innovative technologies, like organoids have been applied in the risk assessment of QDs to promote the surgical interventions of preventing QDs' toxicity. This review not only aimed at updating the research progress on the biological effects of QDs from environmental fate to risk assessment, but also overcame the limitations of available reviews on basic toxicity of nanomaterials by interdisciplinarity and provided new insights for better applications of QDs.

PBDEs disrupt homeostasis maintenance and regeneration of planarians due to DNA damage, proliferation and apoptosis anomaly

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as brominated flame retardants in the manufacturing industry, belonging to persistent organic pollutants in the environment. Planarians are the freshwater worms, with strong regenerative ability and extreme sensitivity to environmental toxicants. This study aimed to evaluate the potential acute comprehensive effects of PBDE-47/-209 on freshwater planarians. Methods to detect the effects include: detection of oxidative stress, observation of morphology and histology, detection of DNA fragmentation, and detection of cell proliferation and apoptosis. In the PBDE-47 treatment group, planarians showed increased oxidative stress intensity, severe tissue damage, increased DNA fragmentation level, and increased cell proliferation and apoptosis. In the PBDE-209 treatment group, planarians showed decreased oxidative stress intensity, slight tissue damage, almost unchanged DNA fragmentation level and apoptosis, proliferation increased only on the first day after treatment. In conclusion, both PBDE-47 and PBDE-209 are dangerous environmental hazardous material that can disrupt planarians homeostasis, while the toxicity of PBDE-47 is sever than PBDE-209 that PBDE-47 can lead to the death of planarians.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Induced by CdSe Nanorods and the Therapy with Modified Procyanidinere

The CdSe nanorod as a one-dimensional nanostructure has an excellent performance in many fields, such as healthcare, new energy, and environmental protection. Thus, it is crucial to investigate its potential adverse health effects prior to their wide exposure. The lung tissue would be the main target organ after CdSe nanorods enter living systems. Here, we showed that pulmonary instillation of CdSe nanorods could decrease the vitality of T-SOD and T-AOC in lung tissues of a rat, increase MDA and hydroxyproline levels and lipid peroxidation products, induce mitochondrial cristae breakage and vacuolization, cause inflammatory responses, and finally induce pulmonary fibrosis. The oral administration of modified procyanidinere could significantly increase the content of antioxidant enzymes, scavenge free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and have protective effects on CdSe nanorods-induced pulmonary fibrosis. The benefit is not only in the early inflammatory stage but also in the later stages of the CdSe nanorods-induced pulmonary fibrosis.

Altering natural photosynthesis through quantum dots: effect of quantum dots on viability, light harvesting capacity and growth of photosynthetic organisms

Quantum dots are versatile fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals with unique photophysical properties. They have been used in various research fields of biotechnology effectively for almost three decades including cell imaging, protein tracking, energy transfer, etc. With their great potential as energy donors or acceptors, quantum dots have also been used in many studies about altering growth rate and photosynthetic activity of photosynthetic organisms by manipulating their light harvesting capacity. In this review, effect of quantum dots on growth rate of photosynthetic organisms and light harvesting capacity of photosynthetic organisms were discussed in details together with toxic effects of cadmium-based and carbon-based quantum dots on photosynthetic organisms. In short, as one of the promising materials of nanotechnology, quantum dots have become one of the essential research topics in photosynthesis research area and will help researchers to manipulate natural photosynthesis in future.

Psychoactive drugs citalopram and mirtazapine caused oxidative stress and damage of feeding behavior in Daphnia magna

As the emerging contaminants, the environmental risks of drug-derived pollutants have attracted extensive attention. Citalopram (CTP) and mirtazapine (MTP) are commonly used as modern antidepressant drugs. Previous studies had proved that CTP and MTP entered the aquatic environment, but less reported the negative effects of the drugs on aquatic organisms. Herein, the effects on the feeding rate of Daphnia magna (D. magna) induced by psychotropic drugs CTP and MTP were investigated, which the possible mechanisms were analyzed with the oxidative stress and damage. Generally, the feeding rates of exposed D. magna under all concentrations of CTP and 1.03 mg/L of MTP were significantly decreased after exposure (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). The inhibitory effect of CTP on the feeding rate of D. magna was time- and dose-dependent. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were particularly increased in D. magna after CTP and MTP exposure (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). The level of antioxidant molecules glutathione S-transferase (GST) and the activity of scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) of D. magna were increased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01). In consequence, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl, and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were increased (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01), which indicated oxidative damage caused by MTP and CTP, due to the imbalance of antioxidative stress system. These findings indicated that psychoactive drugs posed a high toxic threat to the aquatic organisms, and the aquatic environmental risks caused by using psychoactive drugs deserve more attention.

Toxicity of quantum dots on target organs and immune system

Quantum dots (QDs), due to their superior luminous properties, have been proven to be a very promising biological probe, which can be used as a candidate material for clinical applications. The toxicity of QDs in the environment and biological systems has caused widespread concern in the nanosphere, but their immune toxicity and their impact on the immune system are still relatively unknown. At present, the research on the toxicity of QDs is mainly focused on in vitro models, but few have systematically evaluated their adverse effects on target organs. Animal studies have shown that QDs can be accumulated in various organs due to their main exposure routes, thereby posing a potential threat to major organs. This review briefly describes general characteristics and the wide medical applications of QDs and focuses on the adverse effects of QDs on major target organs, such as liver, lung, kidney, brain, and spleen, after acute and chronic exposure. QDs mainly cause changes in the corresponding indicators of target organs, such as oxidative damage, and in severe cases cause hyperemia, tissue necrosis, and even death. In addition to causing direct damage to target organs, QDs can also cause a large number of immune cells to accumulate and cause inflammatory reactions when causing damage to other major organs. Whether it is to avoid the risk of people contacting QDs in production and life, or to realize the clinical applications of QDs, is very essential to conduct systematic in vivo toxicity assessment of QDs.

Mitigating the toxic effects of CdSe quantum dots towards freshwater alga Scenedesmus obliquus: Role of eco-corona

The extensive use of semiconducting nanoparticles such as quantum dots in biomedical and industrial products can lead to their inadvertent release into the freshwater system. Natural exudates in the aquatic system comprising extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and protein-rich metabolites can eventually adsorb onto the quantum dots (QDs) surface and form an eco-corona. The alterations in the physio-chemical and toxicological behavior of CdSe/ZnS QDs under the influence of eco-corona in the freshwater system have not been explored yet. In the present study, lake water medium conditioned with exudate secreted by Scenedesmus obliquus was utilized as an eco-corona forming matrix. The time-based evolution of the eco-corona on the differently charged CdSe/ZnS QDs was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Aging of amine-QDs in algal exudate for 72 h showed enhanced aggregation (Mean Hydrodynamic Diameter- 1969 nm) as compared to carboxyl-QDs (1543 nm). Further, eco-coronation tends to impart an overall negative charge to the QDs. The fluorescence intensity of amine-QDs was quenched by 84% due to the accumulation of higher eco-corona. An integrative effect of surface charge and accumulated eco-corona layer influenced the Cd²⁺ ion leaching from the QDs. An enhancement in the algal cell viability treated with carboxyl - CdSe/ZnS (90%) and amine- CdSe/ZnS QDs (94%) aged for 72 h suggested that eco-corona can effectively mitigate the inherent toxicity of the QDs. The oxidative stress markers in the algal cells (LPO, SOD, and CAT) were in correlation with the cytotoxicity results. The algal photosynthetic efficiency depended on the deposition of eco-coronated QDs on the cell surface. Cellular uptake results indicated low Cd²⁺ concentration of nearly 13.9 and 11.5% for carboxyl- and amine- CdSe/ZnS QDs respectively. This suggests that eco-coronation directly influences the bioavailability of engineered nanoparticles.

Microalgal biosorption of heavy metals: A comprehensive bibliometric review

Heavy metals in the effluents released from industrial establishments pose risks to the environment and society. Prevalent organisms such as microalgae in industrial wastes can thrive in this harmful environment. The connection of the metal-binding proteins of the microalgal cell wall to the metal ions of the heavy metals enables microalgae as an ideal medium for biosorption. The current literature lacks the review of various microalgae used as biosorption of heavy metals from industrial effluents. This work aims to comprehensively review the literature on the use of microalgae as a biosorption for heavy metals. The study summarizes the application of different microalgae for heavy metals removal by identifying the various factors affecting the biosorption performance. Approaches to quantifying the heavy metals concentration are outlined. The methods of microalgae to generate biocompounds to enable biosorption of heavy metals are itemized. The study also aims to identify the materials produced by microalgae to facilitate biosorption. The industrial sectors with the potential benefit from the adoption of microalgal biosorption of heavy metals are recognized. Moreover, the current challenges and future perspectives of microalgal biosorption are discussed.

Cadmium sulfide quantum dots impact Arabidopsis thaliana physiology and morphology

The differential mechanisms of CdS QDs (Quantum Dots) and Cd ion toxicity to Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh were investigated. Plants were exposed to 40 and 60 mg L^-1 for CdS QDs and 76.9 and 115.2 mg L^-1 CdSO₄·7H₂O and toxicity was evaluated at 5, 20, 35 (T5, T20, T35) days after exposure. Oxidative stress upon exposure was evaluated by biochemical essays targeting non-enzymatic oxidative stress physiological parameters, including respiration efficiency, total chlorophylls, carotenoids, ABTS and DPPH radicals reduction, total phenolics, GSH redox state, lipid peroxidation. Total Cd in plants was measured with AAS. Root and leaf morphology and element content were assessed in vivo utilizing low-vacuum Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) with X-ray microanalysis (EDX). This integrated approach allowed identification of unique nanoscale CdS QDs toxicity to the plants that was distinct from CdSO₄ exposure. The analyses highlighted that CdS QDs and Cd ions effects are modulated by the developmental stage of the plant, starting from T20 till T35 the plant development was modulated by the treatments, in particular CdS QDs induced early flowering. Both treatments induced Fe accumulation in roots, but at different intensities, while CdS QDs was associated with Mn increase into plant leaf. CdSO₄ elicited higher levels of oxidative stress compared with QDs, especially the former treatment caused more intense respiration damages and reduction in chlorophyll and carotenoids than the latter. The two types of treatments impact differently on root and leaf morphology.

Two PBDEs exposure inducing feeding depression and disorder of digestive and antioxidative system of Daphnia magna

2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) and 2,2',4,4',5-pentabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-99) are two typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and studies have proven that these PBDs can disrupt the behaviors and physical function of aquatic organisms. However, little is known about the compositional impacts of BDE-47/BDE-99 compound pollution on the feeding behavior of Daphnia magna. In this study, a response surface methodology (RSM) was introduced into the combined toxicity assessment of BDE-47 and BDE-99 on the feeding depression of D. magna. Low concentrations of BDE-47 (9.2 μg/L) and BDE-99 (5.4 μg/L) had no effect on the feeding behavior of D. magna; nevertheless, the feeding depression was strengthened, and a concentration-dependent effect was observed with increasing concentrations of BDE-47 and BDE-99. The results of RSM indicated that the mixture of BDE-47 and BDE-99 can enhance their toxicity on the feeding behavior of D. magna. Moreover, real-time PCR (qPCR) analysis showed that the down-regulation of α-amylase (AMS) appeared in most of the exposed D. magna. However, there were significant different in the gene expression of trypsin, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) between the exposure and control groups. The change in the enzyme activity of AMS, trypsin, SOD and CAT implied that BDE-47 and BDE-99 cause damage to the digestive and antioxidative systems of D. magna. Correlation analysis indicated that a significant positive correlation existed between the gene expression and enzyme activity of SOD and CAT. Our results contribute to the understanding of toxicity caused by BDE-47/BDE-99 compound pollution in D. magna and help to improve traditional toxicity assessment methods for aquatic environments.
